news this morning Dan Graziano what can you tell us this just coming across the NFL suspending Houston’s Aziz al-shaer for three games without pay for repeated violations of the rules intended to protect the health and safety of players of course this comes following this illegal hit uh on Trevor Lawrence Sunday that got ALS shaer ejected from the game now we’ll miss the next three three- game suspension without pay I turn right to you Jeff Saturday was this the right decision by the league yeah it’s the right decision honestly honestly I think uh I I think it’s actually more than fair I thought it would be for the rest of the season so three games um I serve on a committee that with Ronnie lot and and Curtis Martin and the repeated offender needs to be the stress point on this conversation this is not about one hit to one player that just happened this is a repeated pattern of behavior that has continued to occur and at some point you have to do this and again there there they are right I mean you’re talking about this y this this is only in a couple years we can we can go back further this is it’s too much and at some point this thing escalated what happens if this happens to because everybody you know it’s a Jaguars game right so probably one of the least watched games of of the weekend but think about if if this happens to a Patrick Mahomes if this happens to a Josh Allen in the middle of the playoffs and and everybody starts these fights because this is what’s going to happen cuz you hit Payton Manning like that I’m going to let you know bro I’m getting tossed all of our linemen are getting toss you’re not going to have linemen you’re not going to have half your team cuz everybody’s going at it and then their guys got to protect these guys it gets way too much the league is doing a good job of saying hey we’re going to set a guy down for three games but don’t let just the one hit turn into that this is a repeated pattern of behavior and it’s what can happen in the escalation of events like this I think that’s that’s why they put that in the release announcing it that repeated violations one of the first things they say just to clean up a little bit it’s three games not three weeks Texans are off this week so he has Miss weeks 15 16 and 17 be eligible to return for the regular season finale that makes sense yeah okay I was just sent a letter that NFL VP of football operations John runan sent to um to Al shaer and in it I’m going to read you just part of it it’s a lengthy letter but he writes your lack of sportsmanship and respect for the game of football and all those who play coach and enjoy watching it is troubling and does not reflect to the core values of the NFL your continued disregard for NFL playing rules puts the health and safety of both you and your opponents in Jeopardy and will not be tolerated so I I will confess I don’t usually read the letters I don’t know if the wording is always quite that strong but that seems like extremely pointed language Dominique Foxworth from John ran it’s strong language and I I don’t want to get into the Asha here specifically but I do think that in these situations there are different types of players on defense and some players in order to play the position they play they have to play on an edge you have to be able to to turn it off at the right time and turn it on at the right time but it’s not the defensive player’s responsibility to protect the offensive player so in this particular case that as long as you’re playing within the rules this is not within the rules it’s very different so I understand for defensive players I know how difficult it is to turn it off when you’re in an intense moment and you mentioned like if this happens in a big game that everyone’s watching it’s even hard harder in those big games an important first down that the quarterback is running for and then he decides at the last minute and again this can be about this specific play or it cannot be or this player or it cannot be if he decides that he wants to slide and you see this on the sideline with guys like Mahomes does it Caleb does it where they go to the sideline and they stay in just long enough for you to touch them and then they fall down and us as defensive players we understand that we want this new version of football to be a safer version of football but one thing that we cannot take out of this game is part of what you’re trying to do and part part of what we do in this game is you try both can be true I I understand what you’re saying it is very difficult for defensive players I’m not trying to make a light of that situation this dude leads with his freaking elbow to the head of the quarterback bro and the brace on that he is literally launching into the head of a player I totally understand unintended consequences of players getting on the sideline and even on the slide and guys going over the top maybe hitting him I this was not that this situation dude he is head hunting you know it and I know it and the way that he went at that cat to hit his freaking head is different and we all let me ask you this if you if if you’re playing and they do that to your quarterback what is every defensive player going to say they’re gonna find that other quarterback and he’s got a Target on his back and now we’re going it’s no different than baseball right you hit my guy I’m going to hit your guy and I’m going tell you every player I see around the pile I’m going to get it just escalates we’re trying to protect with you all the way up until the end it’s it is different than baseball we don’t go after an opposing quarterback we would go after the dude who did it so like what happened in that situation is you’re going to go fight the guy who was in that situation we want that to stop the point I’m making is yeah we can go after one specific player but this is not the only time that we’ve seen guys get hurt on a slide and we don’t it’s not always so clear and obvious for us to say that I I I don’t mind that part I just think they’re two totally different conversations it’s fine but which I said is two different conversations I don’t think there’s anything else to ring out of this alsha here conversation he’s been suspended what he did was across the line but that line is very thin and we get close to that line and the expectation for us as defensive players is to administer some punishment it is to protect the first down line and when quarterbacks it’s something that we saw with picket in college where he was doing the slide like these are things that are we have to be aware of and if we want to eliminate and protect the quarterbacks there’s something that needs to be done I don’t know what the right answer is but the answer isn’t the quarterback waiting till the last second and slid and again that may not be what happened in this situation but we have seen situations where guys do that and get knocked out I’m not sure if everyone saw Rex Ryan on our show yesterday but he was extremely passionate about the part of this conversation that Dominique is addressing I agree with you Jeff we’re having two totally separate discussions this hit is not the one to to use right this is this is not the mountain to to die on if you will on that conversation what what what has happened is that quarterbacks are taking advantage of that little piece of the rule that gives them protection and they’re getting as much yardage as they can they’re trying to draw flags that that is happening in the NFL period full stop new paragraph This was a dirty play insanely Dirty by a player who now as you described and John ran described and we just showed you on a full screen has a history of that so A three- game suspension it seems to me is barding on the minimum if if if you’re going to try and send a significant message here that that’s bordering on the least they could have done if that happened to CJ Str and not everybody came off the S side and looked identical to what the Jacksonville Jaguars did he would be ripping his players and I’m telling you right now and listen I I get it I get how difficult the game is I understand all the I’ve played it 14 years don’t I’m not a soft guy you see me up here I I love the I love the the the nature of our game you know enforcing your will doing all those things this is a freaking dirty play and it’s a dirty shot from a guy who continually does it he needed to be suspended I don’t feel a bit bad and whatever deo’s saying is nonsense Sense on this point as well cuz the dude shouldn’t have hit it and Jacksonville responded exactly the way they should have yeah and again and we’re it’s hard to have the separate conversation because a play like that and a guy goes and F and Poe it gets emotional but what I will say is there are guys like that he’s not abnormal there’re plenty of guys like that that Survive by playing defense on the edge it has to at some point become the quarterback’s responsibility cuz quarterback is different than a guy going across the middle to catch a ball you’re running you see what’s happening it reminds me about like when people are crossing the street you it’s your responsibility it may be in the right way but at some point it’s your responsibility to protect yourself and of course we can penalize and find and throw guys out but like the sliding thing is some is a particularly difficult situation for me CU I know what it feels like to be running like we got to stop him but I don’t want a penalty again if Al here he does have this track record it’s different if this was some other player who does not have this track record I’m not sure we would we would respond the same way I don’t think it would be a three- game suspension no right and the the the leading with the bows for me too bothered me like I a I ain’t in for that stuff dude that’s that’s how I did all my tackles cuz I I was smaller like all all with a B 50 all the tackles that’s the breaking news again on on this morning in about the play that got probably the most attention of anything that happened in the NFL this
