[Music] it’s actually happening Bill bellich the legendary NFL head coach six-time Super Bowl champion at 72 years old is joining the college ranks to become the next North Carolina head football coach we’re going to break it all down I got lots of reactions lots of thoughts lots of Les here as bellich takes over for ma Brown in Chapel Hill I’m Harrison Graham you’re watching for verts battling through a throat voice issue because I got to bring you this news hit that subscribe button turn on notifications we recently crossed 5,000 subscribers I give my news opinions analysis on all things in the football World both NFL and college so go ahead and subscribe today this is pretty remarkable when you think about it about a week ago when this first leaked that there could be mutual interest here between belich and North Carolina I’ll be honest I I I didn’t believe it right I was like oh come on that’s that’s silly bill bellich is not coaching college football and he’s especially not doing it at a non-blue blood do I think North Carolina can be a very good program yes but this isn’t Alabama this isn’t Oklahoma this isn’t Texas this is a basketball first school I got to be honest I I’m sure shocked I’m shocked as inside Carolina is reporting this is being finalized as we speak um even when it got closer or it seemed more real I was like okay like I could see him at least showing some interest maybe he’s just desperate to coach maybe he’s using as a leverage point for NFL teams three current jobs open already for the Jets bear Saints to call him and show interest he’s not going to go to college is he it appears he is I I mean it really is I I don’t know if I’ve ever been shocked This Much by a highlevel coach going to a certain team program Etc in my entire life I I can’t even think of a comparable one of one that comes close you were talking about at least arguably if not clearly the best head coach in the history of the NFL at 72 years old going to coach I don’t know the 30th best program in college football I mean it it’s absolutely remarkable I I mean it really is and did he do this because he didn’t want to go through what every other NFL head coach candidate has to go through numerous interviews he did that last year and only the Falcons showed a little interest and even they didn’t bring him in maybe he was just like I’m not going through this process college football is more like the NFL than ever and I’ll say this for belich I think if he was going to be an NFL head coach again he would not have had full roster control he would have had to work hand with hand inand with the GM maybe someone he didn’t trust or even know and maybe he just didn’t want to do that maybe he wanted to run the entire show and at North Carolina he can pick the players he’s the head coach he can do it all if they give him the proper investment from an nil standpoint he’s probably like you know what this is something new I can try something uh I can be fully in charge of this program the question is as my voice is really struggling here can’t will this actually work can this work he has been a football coach since 1975 he was a assistant consultant can’t remember what team for some Baltimore Colts they’re not the Baltimore Colts anymore he’s never left the NFL he’s only coached at the NFL level for half a century and at his Advanced age he is going to jump in the college ranks with a lot of stuff changing overnight in college football and take on this challenge I do respect it it’s like hey man do something new at that age something you’re you’re not familiar with take a swing at it see if you can um take North Carolina uh to a level they haven’t been in in a long time which I’m also curious about can North Carolina get to the college football playoff under bich in a 12 te playoff system SMU just did it in their first year in the ACC you would think it’s at least possible for Bill bellich but there’s so many things at the college level that he’s going to deal with let me ask you this can you imagine Bill bich answering a question from a student newspaper 2019y old for the Tarheel daily whatever it’s called asking him a question and bich taking that seriously I I just have a hard time seeing it now obviously he’s going to have to do it in some capacity he can’t not do Media stuff but this is this is fascinating I I I did not think this would happen um here we are and um it’s across the finish line now there’s some other things obviously you look at belich che’s resume no one’s questioning that he can coach Super Bowls AFC Championship Games almost 30 years as a head coach almost 50 years at the NFL level it’s one of the smartest defensive minds of all time motivators all that stuff can he reach out to 18 to 22 year olds can he connect with those guys can he change his ways enough to be willing to do that because I don’t know if putting a 19-year-old on blast in film room in front of a hundred other players is GNA fly but uh I’m excited to to find out I’m curious to see how this does play out I I feel like this will go one of two ways one within two years everybody will realize this was a train wreck or two it works pretty well and maybe it ends up being like Dion at Colorado where it’s like yeah maybe they’re not a Powerhouse but they could flirt with the college football playoffs now the the other question is this couple questions one how long does he do this he’s 72 he’ll be 73 by the start of next season three to five years I would guess now as of filming this I don’t have the det s of if his son is going to be named the coach in Waiting that was a rumor that was out there that um part of him getting this job he wanted to name Steve bich the coach in Waiting who’s currently the defensive coordinator at Washington um we’ll see if North Carolina budges on that U maybe that’s already broken as we uh uh wrap up this filming we’ll have to wait and see uh but I know that was a big push he wanted to put his son in a good position who does he bring on staff is Josh McDaniels the OC is Matt Patricia on staff Matt Patricia coaching college football that seems like a tough sell I think he’s going to have to find some proven Collegiate recruiters like that’s going to be key for this to work belich isn’t hopping into living rooms now you don’t really have to do that anymore transfer portal nil you kind of just get these guys on Zoom you watch film yeah I like that player I like that player bring those guys in so if you have the right guys on your staff uh that can communicate that stuff to these players and their families then then then this can work so so I have no idea I’d be guessing if if I think it’s going to work at a high level or not maybe it’s somewhere in between of the two extremes that I presented of it working really well or it not working at all but man if you told any human being at any point in the last 30 years that at one point bill bich will be coaching college football regardless of the program they would say you’re insane yet at 72 years old he is going to North Carolina it is uh it’s quite a story it’s great for college football I’ll tell you that is a hell of a story and if you’re North Carolina you know what take the risk right you’re a basketball first school you want to bring some juice into your football program what better juice than bill bich I thought it was crazy when I first said I was like why would they do this go from 73 year old Matt Brown to 72y old Bill belic well if it doesn’t work you just go in a New Direction that’s that that’s kind of the whole thing so uh very very interesting and uh fascinated to see what ends up transpiring here Will Bill bellich work at North Carolina type why for yes
