Sirius XM app under review Avalanche go tending sucks there’s no other way around it they have the worst team save percentage in the National Hockey League oh sure they can score goals but they can’t prevent them and this is why I don’t think the Avalanche seriously as a Stanley Cup Contender no matter how topheavy they are with future Hall of Famers their go tending is bad under review with Mick C 11 a.m. eastern on NHL Network radio Sirius XM 91 and the Sirius XM app the UEFA Champions League is back on Sirius xmfc and this year it’s bigger than ever absolutely ridiculous from Real Madrid the Champions League is on Sirius xmfc 157 and the allnew Sirius XM app the biggest names in the game trying to get behind wrist the line and tws in put it between his legs go NHL play might play on SiriusXM Le game night Jim taty former NH Anthony Stewart with you the Leafs in Detroit tonight against the Red Wings and Bobby McMahon is back in and is on setting expectations for his first game back sticking with what worked before and um kind of how you start start a season or start um anytime that’s you’ve been off for a little bit and that’s just sticking with what what your strengths are and trying to work through those things that speed for me physicalness um trying to get to the net um being hard on their guys and then being being strong defensively what you say is the biggest challenge you’ve had trying to adjust to Craig system which is quite a bit different than the way you guys were playing last year uh I think it’s just uh anticipation is a lot of it um you got to know that guys are moving pucks up quick and we want to go north fast and you got to be ready for those those plays and those pucks are maybe coming up the wall quicker than you you would have thought uh previous years why do you think the power play hasn’t quite clicked the way it did last year uh yeah Power Play It’s it’s a tough one cuz sometimes it’s just um it’s not necessarily like um the the the way the guys are jelling or the way that they’re they’re playing it’s more just um are they generating chances I think we’ve been doing that um for a while and sometimes the puck just doesn’t go in and you got to trust it if you’re if you’re sticking with it and and putting putting shots on net on power play you’re going to get the uh the odd man situations that and put that gives you faith that this team is going to still be able to to stay on track without Anthony for a few two games here yeah it’s a big hole um when he’s not back there knowing that uh he’s in the rotation so um it’s just focusing on playing well defensively kind of trying to keep shots to the outside and um giving our goalies uh the best chances to win games because they they’ve proven that they can they can win us games too um both the guys that we got now so um M’s been Stellar lately too and we trust him Bobby McMahon back in the lineup tonight so Stewie said um quick you know have they’re moving the puck quicker how quick is quick quick as quick as quick try saying that uh three times but uh uh I think especially just sort of in the dzone right and that’s sometimes where they’ve gone into issues and you know a lot of that is you know I think maybe dating back to a couple weeks ago when you had some of those younger guys that are coming up from the American Hockey League the game is processed a little bit slower at that level so I think for them that’s that that’s part of their problem but I think now that they have Jake McCay back uh and you know you have oel and tana those guys collectively move those pucks fairly quickly so I think it’s more so just getting it out of the dzone you don’t want to be stuck there for 30 40 50 seconds at a time and I think that’s sort of where they’ve run into trouble this year where they get stuck in that end but I think they’ve done a great job in the neutral zone in the ozone getting rid of that Puck and that’s why they’re on offense a lot more times than staying being stuck in their dzone uh McMahon obviously you can draw a video image of what he does uses the body he got great speed great hands boy he was missed wasn’t he absolutely and he had six goals in in 21 games and you know he was one of those guys that was a constant in the top six and he’s slotted now um on the third line uh with Minton and DOI but it’s a good problem to have now because he can really push the pace and it might you know turn that line into a constant threat and I think it struggled a little bit this year but he can be a really really big factor and game Cher with that speed all he needs is an inch and he takes a mile and it’s it’s great seeing him skate at full speed because it’s funny it’s you know sometimes he hides out there where you know the D’s trying to Gap up on them and they’re like oh crap this guy’s actually really really fast and by the time they f f it out he’s already in getting a scoring chance too so the game is built on speed uh he is a speed demon out there too and I don’t see him really missing a beat uh coming back from injury and it’s going to be a welcomed addition to add a little bit more five on five scoring uh for the Toronto M police group I I just look at this lineup and the tarz ne Lander and Patti line uh the Thursday night against Anaheim was just just a thrill to watch I don’t know why they would would have an off game I mean they mesh really well together don’t they they do and I think it’s just veteran guys and you know everyone’s shocked by pater edti but you know he’s been plagued by injuries uh you know the last two three season but this is the guy that’s you know scored close to you know I’m doing my math probably over 200 goals right he’s had 630 goal Seasons uh you know he was the captain of the Montreal Canadians uh but he’s coming in and he’s got a second lease on life because at that age you have to come in and stick to the system and figure out what this team needs and in that top six he’s coming in and adding that physicality role everything starts with him getting in on the four check separating the man from the puck he’s not afraid to make the big big hits uh so that’s a little bit surprising for me how um how physical he’s been but it’s just leading to him now getting time and space and he’s not afraid to go to the net and you know when you’re a constant 30 goal scorer you obviously have a great de scoring touch Around the Net and he’s proved that so far so he’s been a little bit of a surprise not too surprising to me but a welcomed addition uh in this Toronto M beliefs top six and you know he came in uh at trading camp and he’s stolen he stole a job he stole a job from a couple players right now and it’s a and this this group has been based on competition and uh so far he’s winning it six times he scored 30 goals I just looked him up he’s got 334 in his career I mean this guy knows where the puck is sometimes you you forget because he’s had so many injuries over the last three years that you you forget what he was but I mean even even if he gets close to what he was that that would be phenomenal I hope he doesn’t score anymore cuz I think in a couple weeks what’s his extension going to be looking like here can they afford to keep him and John tovarus but uh again it’s a feel-good story because you never want guys ending their careers going out uh in a blaze of you know injury problems or you know not you know really fizzling out and you know he’s showing that he still has some hockey left and you know he he’s got the great release uh but he’s not afraid to get to the net and tip pucks as he did on his second goal against the Anaheim Mighty Duck so it’s a Feelgood story as much as you want to cheer for him the player more importantly you want to cheer for him the person just based on on the adversity he’s gone through the last couple Seasons so uh it’s great chemistry it’s good to watch and Craig buuy I’m sure is very very pleased so far uh with uh mattch petetti but the one thing is too if I might add he wasn’t handed everything he was in and out of the lineup you know in training camp it’s like yeah he might sign he might not but he earned everything he’s gotten and so far through 29 games he’s been uh you know the unsung hero I would say of this top six not afraid to hit as he did to Hughes in New Jersey the other night let’s go to Matthew NIS now and and he’s going to talk about a strength for Detroit uh you’re going to see this pairing cider and Edinson 53 and 77 those are really the pillars of the defensive future for the Red Wings um and cider you know I guess they’re they’re both um Allstar bound cider is a lot more physical than than Edinson but they both have Superior Puck skill and here’s NIS and how to play against Mo cider yeah he’s a great defenseman obviously he’s uh you know bigger stronger um plays a physical game so um anytime we can kind of wear him down and and and just uh you know kind of make his make his life more difficult and and play around the net and um you know make it play 200 ft from our from our net it’s it’s it’s going to help us what gives you faith that you guys can keep stacking wins without Anthony sters I mean uh we have a lot of faith in in Joseph wall too you know I think he’s he’s done incredible this year um obviously it’s it’s uh you know we’re we’re not happy with with what soy had but um you know we need Jo to step up for us and um you know he’s been doing a great job so we have a lot of faith in him that he can you know help us win the games I remember last year talking with the challenge of adjusting to the the grind of the NHL all the travel the games how how are you finding it this year yeah it’s I mean it’s still a challenge it’s going to be a challenge every year I think it is for everyone um I think it’s just managing your your body and um taking care of yourself off the ice um but yeah I think it’s definitely getting a little bit easier I’m getting a little bit more used to it but it’s it’s always going to be a challenge you know this league is is a uh you know very demanding and um requires you to you know kind of take care of yourself um properly so you know kind of just taking taking care of myself is is going to help me a lot when schedule comes out are you able to kind of look oh because of the for naations all that stuff it’s going to be condensed so you can kind of game plan how you’re going to get a maximum rest for someone like yourself yeah yeah I mean uh you know I I felt like it was it was the same last year you know they allar break uh you only get a week and you just got to take full advantage of it and this year you know we have a little a little bit you know a little bit bigger of a window so um yeah I’m going to have to take full advantage of that time but you know that’s in a while so um you know you got to you got to play some good hockey now and and take care of business until we can you know kind of get that window of of a little rest Obby McMahon might come back what what stands out about him and what he’s been able to do in the game yeah strong fast plays physical um you know he’s contributed in very big games and and scored some very big goals for us so we’re excited to bring him back to the lineup and um I think he’s going to bring some juice for us for sure I’m sure he will you look at that left side n’s back in patch ready back in McMahon back in I mean those were considerable losses in terms of Manpower right yes and some quality NHL players uh you know missing back there too and um you know they did a fantastic job in just weathering the storm with those injuries and you know you saw Steve’s fill in you saw uh Alex neand to gankin was uh showing that he was you know knocking on the door as well too but again it’s going to be interesting to see now with Holberg on the fourth line I think that’s maybe somewhere where he might not fit I think he slotted more better for the middle six but um it’s it’s a good problem to have with all these forwards that are knocking on the door ready to go ready to compete and that are solid National Hockey League players too but uh I’m looking forward to watching McMahon’s line with Minton and doy I think they can have a big big game and be X factors and start building on having that third line be a constant threat and be a A Difference Maker for the slea group well said so uh the the Leafs com in off a couple of wins and and the Red Wings are are struggling we talked about their penalty kill Dreadful 31st in the league power play is eight though and for the Leafs power play sits number 20 and their penalty kill is seventh the Leafs do score more of course and and the other thing is the leaf go ending uh the goals against average is rated second best in the NHL so there’s a couple of factors there that on paper should provide for a maple victory tonight but you got to play the game so we’re going to step out and line up the opening face off for you in Greater detail next this is Leafs game night on TSN 1050 the iHeart Radio App and the Leafs radio [Music] network no two scoring stops being an issue however goaling gets the concern now with stolar out Hill to be recalled in walls starting tonight it’s been a stingy week so far for the leaves 21 in overtime in Jersey then 3-2 at home to Anaheim and with Detroit tonight and buffalo tomorrow we wonder if the lease offense will find its way so guy will the scoreboard reflect that tonight well let’s find out Molson Canadian Leafs hockey starts now it’s time for Molen Canadian Leafs hockey on TSN 1050 and the Leafs radio network the Leafs live here they sure do welcome to molon Canadian Leafs hockey on TS 10 1050 in the leas radio network Jim taty former NHL or Anthony Stewart with you Joe Bowen and Jimmy Ralph standing by the starting lineup is brought to you by Molson the official beer sponsor of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the lease will present this way Matthew centering Marner and N tar centering that great line with neander and pater ready Fraser mitton centering doy and Bobby McMahon Connor der centering Steven lorence and Holberg and on the blue line Riley oel mccab and tanith benois and Timmons are the pairings and Joseph W starts in goal and for the Red Wings one slight change uh Marco Casper not playing tonight he had been their number two Center so it’ll be JT confer between Kane and der brat and that means that Christen fiser is is back in but for the leaf stew I mean it’s great to see Bobby McMahon back in and you really see some some good depth in that left side is all repaired Now isn’t it yeah good to see him back and they’re going to be welcoming back his 20 uh six goals in 21 games before he got injured and I like the fact fact that they’re not just throwing him right into the top six right away let him find a way to get a feel for the game and you know what better you know line to do that with Minon and DOI minton’s been a driver I feel been playing great above the puck and having a great stick and making simple simplistic plays uh and I can see him dishing some uh neutral zone passes for McMahon to use his speed so I think it’ll be a battle of third lines uh tonight too and I can see this be a night where McMahon and eventually even Max doy breaking his slump throughout this year so uh but John tar his line has been playing great Austin Matthews they’ve been a constant threat so this top nine uh can compete with anybody in the league and they’re going to look to continue to do that against the Detroit Red Wings tonight coach’s comment is powered by your Ontario Honda dealers score $1,500 Honda bonus on the crvlx conditions apply visit Honda ontario.ca if he’s surprised with the team’s low power play ranking it is a little bit I mean I think we look at other metrics too you know we’ve had lots of opportunities you know I think you know I don’t know where we’re ranked right now but it wasn’t long ago we’re ranked pretty high in the league with um closest Pro um you know shooting Pucks in very good areas creating great a um you know we got to keep doing it they don’t go in all the time but we got to stay with it you know and find a way to uh produce a little bit more that way but it’s not from a lack of getting looks I think we are getting good looks and doing some real good things it’s just we haven’t scored it’s a lot like our five on five scoring too and you know a little bit like we get good looks and got to find a way to get some more goals for sure I mean like I said you know we we’re long as we’re getting the looks and yes we got to finish better but we’re getting looks how much does someone like Bobby McMahon kind of help your top nine just coming back in the pace he was on scoring wise well yeah for sure his size and speed right and a strength um that really helps a lot he brings a lot of speed to our team and uh you know he did a good job of finishing his plays too and scoring a little bit for us but uh we like the size and the the ability that he has to be physical and do good things around the net and uh so he’s he helps a lot he’s in for sure then he is how would you assess Morgan Riley season I think pretty solid I mean I think he’s kind of Taken um you know we wanted him to really focus on playing good D and and uh that side of things and not being so risky I think he’s taken to that and he’s done a pretty good job of it but on the other side like he he’s a point producer and we need him to um you know get up in the play I think he’s doing a better job of his reads of getting up in the play when he should and uh creating offense but uh you know um he look you know you look at as plus minus but a lot of those are empate goals I know you and two of them are on the on the Pittsburgh shorthanded the other night in pit there was two of them so you know I think before that I mean he’s a plus player 55 and Craig buuy getting set for the game in Detroit tonight so I want to go over do a couple things he said there first of all by getting looks um and I think we would agree that five on five they have had a lot of good looks and in the power play as well so even when they had the the five forward power play lots of good looks how frustrating is it to get looks and not score well it’s frustrating right but I I think the team sort of takes on the uh the temperament of the coach and the one thing I could say with Craig breu he didn’t sound panicking he didn’t sound frustrated he didn’t sound he’s like hey you know what they must have the greatest analytics department so he must be knowing something that we don’t that the goals are coming right so uh the one thing I think he wants them to do is maybe have a shoot first mentality but when you have that abundance of talent and so many guys that can make plays from the pl uh from the flanks and cross scam plays and back door tap-ins it’s really really difficult to do that so we’re going to see if they go back to uh the fiveman unit or revert to a four plus one uh which I think is probably best for this group too but they need to find a way just to simplify and I think eventually it’s too talented of a group for them to be struggling this long I could see them uh you know correcting this a lot sooner than later um the other and you said like he’s point blank with his answers which I like he doesn’t hedge or he doesn’t try not to say something he just says it so when he’s asked about Morgan Riley’s season I thought that answer was was just absolutely stupendous because it’s right there he gives you the assessment some coaches wouldn’t do that yeah who asked that question that must been one of the competitors asking a question like that trying to trying to get them to throw them under the bus but uh you know and I think that is sort of you know when a team is doing so well it’s like well we got to find something wrong or we got to shift the microscope somewhere but Craig buub is is a matter of fact and he tells you exactly how it is and Morgan Riley yes he’s not going to be on Pace for 60 points or 70 points but this is not about points about the team getting wins and he’s been a big part in the constant of this group uh having success and uh it’s not judged on points this year so I think it was a perfect answer uh he told the truth and for me I think Morgan Riley’s season is going just fine yeah absolutely nobody would have any complaints with anybody on that blue line really from the Blue Line in I don’t think there’s there’s any concern at all is there no no and uh you know they have some competition and some guys you know that are out right now and Connor Timmons has been amazing so far he’s got six points throughout the year and uh you saw oel with 10 points he’s back on the right side with Morgan Riley as well and Ben ju’s been adding a physical element so the the the you know what you’re getting 95% of the time with this blue line and as a coach that’s a that’s a pleasure and it’s a treat to watch uh having those guys on the back end wow it’s a nice departure too I mean who would think that that we’d be talking about secondary scoring as an issue and and five on five scoring and and also the subplot is the power play could be better that’s ridiculous I know as long as we’re not talking about contract statuses and uh goalie controversies and what’s going on next year looking forward again it’s it’s it’s good it’s great to do my job because we’re focusing on the hockey aspects and there’s been some great positive storylines and you know great plays to break down and games to break down which is exciting for myself yeah there there’s plenty to I guess be concerned about but they are still first in the division could you imagine if this team was in you know sixth place right now right but uh but with with Craig breu he’s done a great job of keeping this team on track keeping them focused and that’s why I think this year’s different there’s no real panic in their play there’s no real diversion where you’re like what what the heck was that period that’s happened maybe 10 of out of the you know the 200 periods that have been gone by so far this year sorry the 90 periods that have been played this year they’ve only had like three or four bad bad awful periods so they’ve been consistently performing competing and that’s what’s leading to the results and them sitting right now at top of the Atlantic division uh you got about a minute and a half left I’m going to circle something we’re going to see a lot of tonight so Edinson and cider that’s the number one pairing for Detroit and they play against all the tough units like they get the the the number one assignment I mean that that’s a young pairing for that isn’t it yes but you’ll see cider play tonight and he’s a big big body and 6 fo three and you know he’s physical as equally as he’s been uh talented as well too and Edmond said 6’6 so what you want to do is uh I think you want them turning tonight so if I’m uh the maple leaes I’m chipping Pucks in behind them having them turn having them absorb some paycheck uh some body checks because you want to slow them down but these are big bodies that can skate they can get across the line they have great chemistry and if you don’t take their time and space away they can really really hurt you so uh again they’re going to be playing 22 plus minutes tonight I’m sure uh so if I’m Toronto I’m going in early and often making them turn you know and making it a tough tough night because sometimes their age can show so again you want to make them look their Ag and just have them play more so in the defensive Zone than in the ozone and I mean really if the leag play the way they’re they’re capable of and and um overpower Detroit they they should I mean we’re talking about a win here aren’t we I think so too but I’m not a betting man so I if if I was betting I wouldn’t touch this game but uh um again they they had some off nights uh against Pittsburgh and the Washingtons but they’ve been they found a way to bounce back uh they they have no issue in putting three four game win streaks together and I could see them if they to the system they should be able to uh easily get this win tonight but even in those two losses the Pittsburgh and Washington games nobody was really upset about how they played nope nope but again if the power play was clicking a lot of those games I think would be a different result so I think that’s what they got to focus on it’s not saying hey this is a practice game but I think this is a game now where if they focus on getting penalties drawing penalties and scoring some goals can now that can make a lot of these games going forward a lot easier wow uh I mean there’s a lot at stake here and then of course tomorrow night at home to Buffalo so this could be a really good weekend or or not or I hope so I hope so we’ll be watching and that’s why you play the game but uh um again it’s it’s it’s it’s easy to overanalyze too but uh they’re they’re they’re cruising along right now but we know there’s going to be some dips coming up here too but they’re winning the games that they’re supposed to win uh three of the last five they’ve had a really great December for the most part and leading into the Christmas break that’s sometimes where you can you know dip a little bit lose focus and this is what I want to see can this group Focus for the next four or five games before the Christmas break okay so it’s to so and go for Detroit and wall for Toronto the opening face off with Joe bow and Jimmy Ralph is next this is mson Canadian Leafs hockey on TSN 1050 the iHeart Radio App in the Leafs radio network how about Josh Allen he’s amazing right now he’s the NFL MVP when it happens in the NFL we’re reacting to it on Sirius XM NFL radio Pittsburgh Steelers are for real with sucks there’s no other way around it they have the worst team save percentage in the National Hockey League oh sure they can score goals but they can’t prevent them and this is why I don’t think the Avalanche seriously as a Stanley Cup Contender no matter how topheavy they are with future Hall of Famers their goal tending is bad under review with Mick Kern 11:00 a.m. eastern on NHL Network radio Sirius XM 91 and the Sirius XM app the UEFA Champions League is back on Sirius xmfc and this year it’s bigger than ever absolutely ridiculous from Real Madrid Mery side Magic from most now with more the ice Sirius XM NHL Network radio Sirius XM 91 and the Sirius XM app the biggest names in the game trying to get behind wrist the line and walks in put it between his life NHL play like play on SiriusXM [Music] backto back games for the Toronto Mays and it starts out with a game against the Red Wings in Detroit this is the seventh of 14 sets of back-to-back games for the Toronto Maple leavs they are 24 and0 in the first of the backto backs and they have host the Buffalo Sabers they host the Buffalo Sabers on uh well tomorrow afternoon on a strange start time a 5:00 start Joe bow along with Jim Ralph here and we uh uh just witnessed a special ceremony for cam Talbot uh goenda by now we’re assuming that’s what it was for the 500 games played overall which I mean you’ve got to say that’s equivalent to a th000 games per player wouldn’t you well well not off your Glenn hall now now oh now when when they don’t play the whole okay what number what number would you say would be equivalent I would say 500 I would say 500 would be would be a real good equivalent to a thousand games for a player Absolut yeah now you don’t get many even Marty broer playing 65 70 games Jersey played what 79 I think one year with the St Louis Blues still have the rec I think it is I I I believe it is but uh we will have to look at that but we can tell you the starting goal tenders brought to you by Molson the official beer sponsor of the Toronto Maple Leafs and it will be vly huso for the Detroit Red Wings who is 04 and two this year with a 3.74 goals against average and an 870 save percentage he’s 21 and0 lifetime against the Leafs with a 3.23 goals against average in those games and Jack Campbell recently signed is the backup goenda wall gets the start he was excellent in relief the other night when Anthony stolar went down and he has an 83 and0 record thus far with a 2.16 goals against average and a robust 921 save percentage this will be his first ever uh game against the Detroit Red Wings Dennis Hilder has been brought up as the backup goenda Sabers at home at Scotia Bank Arena and I did look it up U Grant fur 79 games is the NHL record Marty broer at the seasons of 7877 twice and 76 how would you like to have been the backup goal tender for those I would have loved it me too but the only the only damage you could do to yourself was getting your thumb caught in the door while you were opening it yeah how would how would you prepare well well you well you often told me about stuffing money in your blocking gloves so you could buy a hot dog while you were sitting on the end of the bench in the American Hockey depends on where it was yeah oh yeah no no you couldn’t be right on the bench you had to be in the walkway kind of on the other side corner you know the in the NHL Montreal’s like that where in Montreal you don’t sit on the bench you sit in the corner Binghamton was like that yeah broom county Arena the broom County Memorial Arena yeah yes cuz when you’re not playing and you have the team meal at noon and it gets to about 9:00 you get hungry a little hunger go yeah how were the dogs at the Bro County didn’t matter I was in my I was in my 20s and I was hungry were were you able to get mustard and condiments and stuff like that yeah well had to be careful because if you got called in well no yeah if you had mustard on your shirt that wouldn’t look good either yeah you and I might hold the league record for that so so beer was completely out of the question well it was frown by I was round up Ralphie you have bustard on your shirt and you smell like a brewery I’m okay Coach I can come in cheers we’re ready to go the puck has dropped at Little Caesar’s Arena and we’re underway the Leafs in white to our left and the Red Wings in red to our right as it rolls down into Redwing territory now around the boards and tarus into the four check as the Wings play it around into the near Corner trying to chip it up with Petri to get it out and he does but it’s turned over and now leaves bring it right back in pater ready tried to go to a backand but had it knocked off his stick at the last second least keep it in Patcher into the slot getting a shot away and it was high and wide of the goal Oliver Ean Larson keeping it in it sounds like there are a lot of leaf fans in attendance and now one of the Red Wings has gone down in a heap Alex to Brink it and pachetti is being challenged here by sherro and I think what might have been a kneeon KNE collision and I think Patti was getting a penalty on this we will see if it’s evened up the brink it went down then got up on his own hob to the bench and appears to be walking okay but he’s headed towards their dressing [Applause] room and the Bret made an inside move and then Patcher ready got mauled by sherat which would have been a roughing penalty under normal circumstances but number 67 two minutes for kneeing at least you know what you can get away with mhm and Craig Brew is saying okay that’s fine if you’re going to call a knee but are you saying you can grab a guy around the head and throw him to the ice without penalty so the penalty kill has brought to you B icmc markets take your trading to the next level with Z Commission on stocks to break it down although he seems to be back at the bench and is testing the knee out so hopefully it’s not bad let’s see if he pops out for the power play here know that then you have a real issue with the roughing call right yeah Leafs win the face off and mccab was able to swing it around the boards but a good block on the far side to keep it in Raymond with a shot that deflects off a body in front of the net that body is a rather familiar spot for the Leafs and that was Chris tanov as the Leafs get it out into the Center Ice Area Red Wings organizing in their own end cider dropping the puck back brought on to the blue line to the line and in now by Dylan Lin Lin looks for the man in front it comes back into the corner mccab ties his man up so does tanov trying to pin it there as long as they can Puck is stolen played off to Marner he makes a little move to give him space and down the ice it goes power play for the Red Wings eighth overall in the National Hockey League but just 1 for 11 in their last five games coming in brought out the Center Ice Area Now by Kane dropped it back to the point trapped there now by gustofson gson gets a return pass but he can’t keep it in and comes back out into neutral ice with 54 seconds left in the penalty Red Wings organizing a neutral ice Patrick Kane to the line and in the former Blackhawk gives the puck away Leafs are able to chop it out at Center but didn’t get it all the way down the ice as Alex debrett who has made a miraculous recovery is on to the the ice he gets it back to the Blue Line near side for teraso into the slot area trying to work the boards is gustaffson left wing side a shot B handed off the goal post great Chance by Ras Muson but he blocked it off the post and it is cleared by the Leafs out and down the ice wall made the first save but the rebound was chipped over his shoulders but it seemed to be fluttering and off the iron it went Red Wings in on the left wing mck tries to Center broken up by Toronto and a good play by tanov he was in a lot of traffic thought about icing the puck and then thought very quickly I’m going to bank this off someon shinpad and we’re going to be down one nothing hey Joey why don’t you handle this and wall did just that yeah I’m sure from a leaf standpoint and maybe even from the officials Joe they’re going to feel like they were played a little bit by der Bret it was obviously Collision but to me it’s because du Brink tries to avoid the hit and jump past patch already shot from the point deflects wide of the goal penalty is over centering pass another Block in front of the net by Toronto thatman by emman Larson and the Leafs get it out now at Center and Riley will send it down into Detroit territory Red Wings organizing and starting out with it m got it up on the right wing looks for a drop pass and then a angle shot is steered wide easily by wall the puck comes free and Fraser mitton has it now backhanding it deep into the Zone DOI into the four check with a hit there on Justin Hall the puck comes free on the left wing and comes to Center Lin in over the line something going on behind the play that we’re not privy to as our screen is just showing the playby playay but something I’m not so sure that Max doy might have been involved in something behind the play but the crowd was uh very much into it although I guess we’re not going to find out GRE grub seems okay with everything 1633 to go here in the first period draw one cleanly by Detroit Edinson dropping it off into the slot Raymond got it off on the right wing and a shot smothered by wall and he will stop play with a face off coming in the gado zone the Leafs without a shot on goal in the first 3 and 1/2 minutes of this first period well there was a lot of traffic in front of Joseph wall is there get Austin Matthews and Chris tanov back both tied up with Detroit Redwing players Chris can of the king of the ice packs leads the league in Block shots boy we’ve seen him limp off after taking a particularly tough one and he doesn’t miss a shift at the point he keeps the puck in for Toronto a drop pass for Matthews left for tanam Tan’s going to ring the boards with it Marner can’t get to it nce was H bodied off the disc the puck is still in the corner though in the skates nce didn’t see it now he tries to force it back along for Marner and it goes behind the net and cider is going to lift it high into the center ice area for Larin pass deflected wide of the goal a centering feed comes back into the slot and the leaks are weak working out on a three on two Matthews the Wheelman in over the line and pass on the wing oh tanov is robbed there by huso as he got a centering feed from Mitch Marner okay what was tanov doing up there here the leaps again neander on the wing it goes and now it’s Timmons in over the line and a wrist shot by the leades goes high and wide kavaris keeping the puck in at the Blue Line got it into the slot nean ER circles with it still with it in the slot area Works to the left wing side shields comes in front of the net swinging in in front of the goal penalty coming for holding wellie neander had it on a ring as he took it around through the slot then cut from his left through the gold priest area and couldn’t come up with it boy that was after a great three-way passing play between Matthews Barner and Chris tanov but Willie Nan yeah was finally by the end of it the Redwing player Patrick Kane just said to hell with it I’m I’m not even going to try to disguise this as he latched on the nander who was driving out for the goal line so the Leafs on the power play and it is brought to you by your onario Subaru dealers enjoy fall to the fullest with symmetrical full-time all-wheel drive visit your local Subaru dealer to book a test drive today leads control the face off Neil Anders swinging it back to the Blue Line Riley is there with a shot that deflects a change in the power play format the Leafs have a defenseman on the ice and Morgan Riley he has the puck looks for for Marner but goes into the corner neander back to Riley Riley to Marner Marner with a slap pass to the side of the net that Matthews couldn’t handle cleared around the boards but Riley anticipates well to keep it in back it goes to Marner and a wrist shot is deflected wide this time it’s going to go off the corner boards and slide all the way back into Toronto territory personally just me I like having a defenseman on the marer in across the line and it’s going to be offside pretty sure Joseph wall does too I mean here here’s the bottom line you don’t have a shot from the point that’s regardless yeah regardless of having a forward an extra forward you don’t have drew Dy or Victor Hedman back there that’s going to blast a one timer and I’m talking forward or defense so why wouldn’t you keep somebody that can defend if you do turn the puck over and make your second unit maybe a little more potent as n is on the second unit now and the Red Wings rattl it around the boards and they’ll get it out at set ice emman Larson finding Max doy doy will drop it back for the defenseman he gets a return pass and doy is going to carry it in and flip it in on the left wing boards goes around back of the net tried to center it comes back to the point egman Larson holds down into the corner now for DOI back for egman Larsson pass was intercepted Redwings trying to get to it and they do and send it out and down the ice with a half minute to go in the power play the first of the game for the maple leags no score nicely underway in Detroit Red Wings have the 31st best penalty kill in the league so second second worst overall and at home Joe they’ve given up 17 goals on 38 times short wow here’s Matthews with 8 seconds left in the penalty to Marner and across the line clipped in by mcmah it goes around the boards it’ll be trapped over there and quickly set over for Timmons he tried to pass it into the slot to Matthews that didn’t work Matthews back of the goal though Matthews Shields the puck nicely and Carries back of the net coming out in front with a shot went for the top corner and it was there but he missed it comes back into the slot nicely cradle there and Matthews tripping it back here’s a chance for Marner Marner holds works it back to the blue line and a long shot is drilled wide of the goal and the puck will be played out at Center Ice Now by Detroit and this could be icing but no won’t have it enough to get over the goal line Simo benois starting back for torado did he get the center ice I didn’t think he did either it’ll be brought back for an icing call after the shoot in goes asay face off in the leaf zone is brought to you by Alpine credits you own your own home and need aone Alpine credits can help get approved at Alpine credits.com first time we’ve been able to see that sort of in a while although David Camp is still on the injured reserve list Philip Meyers Ryan Reeves and Nick Robertson off the roster not playing yeah healthy is not something we’ve heard a lot of this year oh you’re right about that played off the boards out at Center Ice leaes flip it high into the Detroit Zone into the near Corner played up on the left wing boards by Christian f Leaf’s trying to keep it in but it rolls out into neutral ice and Ekman Larson then trying to make a pass up the middle misfired and it’s cleared back down into the Toronto end Heckman Larson and Bergman after the puck in the near Corner goes around to The Far Side Loren gets in there with a hit on the boards against Justin Hall long shot hit the goal post again that was in a crowd and I don’t think wall ever saw it till he heard it you could hear the Clank couldn’t you back in over the line again with a shot blocker Away by wall Bar corner wings with pressure but can’t come up with it cleanly now and they do they turn it over but they restore it then a shot didn’t make through the crowd in front of the net back to the point shirat a shot that was blocked and knocked into the corner by wall back to the goal is Raymond Lucas Raymond trying to get some help from Joe valeno it is wedged with a myriad of skates back of the net Puck comes up on the wing but not cleared McCade can’t come up with it wings with good pressure shot blocked rebound knocked wide of the net by wall puck in the corner Red Wing still with it long shot at traffic they score a high shot that was deflected downwards and the Red Wings have opened the scoring both their fourth attempt with traffic in front and this one gets through I think the Leaf’s looking quickly to see if there was any gender interference on the play or it was to stick High I thought it was up High boy did that go off Wall’s glove down and in maybe it did rasm was in front of the net it was fluttering no g off Ras M’s uh well politely to put it Fanny I believe and into the net I think that’s what is going to be called but it is one- nothing [Applause] Detroit he dodged the bullet just a little earlier when shot like that hit the post Patcher ready playing it into the corner and it’s knifed out at center with a high stick and now the Leafs quickly try to bring it back here’s tarus in over the line on the near board got a pass into the slot for neander neander is able to free it up on the right wing side closes got a backand away and he set it high and wide of the net rebound back of the net to Willie Again Neil Anders been the least best player so far into the slot area it comes for Timmons but it bounced over his stick Timmons trying to keep it in it’ll come to the line kept in with a long shot by neander not much on it and it was stopped easily there by Billy huso Red Wings leading one to nothing voleno and fiser are drawing the assists on the goal Matthews in over the line tried to work it down into the corner it goes back of the net played by nce to The Far Side back it comes to Marner a pass into the slot area n kicking it free trying to get his stick on it now does Works down into the rightwing corner dropping it back for marer Marner twisting and turning with it as the Lee Supply some pressure Matthews back to Marner in the slot rest shot coming that was stopped by huso there was a juicy rebound but unable to get his stick on it was nice and the Red Wings get it out and down into the leaf zone no they’re saying Petri shot from the Blue Line went the distance he his first of the year I’ll tell you this the leaps only have four shots on goer beat out shot 7 to four and Trail one to nothing I think they’ve come up out with some jump and some purpose here in this game Matthew n very nearly redirects one standing in front of Billy the Dozen go but I you know what I I’ve liked the Matthews line early going showing some jump certainly seen it from Willie nander the zarus line Petri from voleno and fiser is the scoring play and as you mentioned it is the first goal of the season for Jeff Petri and a nicing call here against the maple leaf will come back Detroit Red Wings have missed the playoffs eight straight Seasons only the Buffalo Sabers are on a worst streak and that’s who the leavs play tomorrow as they’ve gone 13 years without being in the postseason we know all about those droughts yes and we have a lot of empathy for them not a lot the the broadcasters we do broadcasters Red Wings get it back into the Zone a pass in front oh what a save made by wall holy m terce senko is robbed by Joseph wall brought in by bergren bergren with a centering pass again that went astray another shot from an angle goes high and wide Lea’s trying to get to the loose Puck McMahon will punch it out at Center and then a high stick clicks Minton in the face I think they’re going to say that it was a follow through of the shot was a follow through of an attempted slap at the puck really not a not an actual shot so would have thought you had to have control of your stick Leafs have it at their own blue line now kimmons a lead pass deflex in on a bounce that Uso had to be cautious with guson got it out and down the ice and the lights are going to get an icing call here to be brought back into Detroit Terr with 752 left to play in Period number one this is a pretty good weekend had some friends that are going down to Detroit this weekend they’ve got the leach tonight and then the Buffalo Bills tangle with the Red Hot D Detroit Lions in the stadium that is just literally across the street from the hockey arena in Detroit the whole area down there redeveloped by the illich family was always a lot of fun when we got to travel down to Detroit shot there rang off the goal post by the leaks another centering pass in front chipped by pachetti wide of the goal pater ready had a three-point night the other night Leaf sent the puck in but it is offside and so they’ll have to tag up Max pater ready very visible though isn’t he brought out at Cent ice and in on the line now by the Red Wings fake drop pass goes into the corner trying to come out with it is Raymond he gets it back to the point kept Alive by sherat now looking for sherat again sherat with a wrist shot coming that was deflected right on stopped by wall and neander breaks out of the lead Zone tried to play it ahead but it went off escate and sherat will send it back out into the Center Ice Area Lin couldn’t come up with it neander steals got it to Matthews little head fake and then he snapped it over top of the goal wide played out at Center Ice by the Red Wings been a good Tempo to this first period brought on by nce dropped off for Matthews Matthews dropping it back to Marner into the slatter a shot and that may have been stopped by huso in back into the corner it goes coming out with it Marner a shot scor Mitch Marner ties the [Applause] game Leafs have comeing waves here and the first period to be able to tie at Max Patcher had a great chance leaes hit a goal post before that Jake mcab jumped down and had a great chance that whoo got a Blocker on but finally Mitch Barner takes the pass in the corner for Matthew n has enough time and space to sift out towards the middle of the ice and let it go and it just squeezes under the blocking arm the right arm of vly huso [Music] 11th goal of the season for Marner 39th point to leave the Leafs in that department Marner had only had one points in one of his last four games that’s when he was now is Derek Lon what would the challenge be here Detroit is challenging the play for offside prior to the goal all right uh is this when the player Lo lost his dick Joe and Matthews thck handled over the line uh yes and it’s off it’s offside yep so the goal is going to be called back and I think the part for Matthews was the distraction of the stick that’s flying past him yeah and it’s it’s got be the legs his upper body Joe is actually over the Blue Line yeah his the two skates are over the Blue Line his rump is on the blue line but uh it’s going to be waved off and so video review Strikes Back at the Maple Leafs here again tonight I’m surprised this has taken that long you can see from the overhead view the overhead camera we’ve seen that he does not the body does not break the plane but the skates [Applause] do well they will now make the announcement I’m sure after reviewing the play please reset the clock to 648 the play was offside no goal well the game on November the 13th at Washington was full of these Washington had a goal called back then Steve Loren had a goal called back then Matthew n had a goal call back so the mayap Leafs are now on a streak of 0 for three on video review this one was a little more obvious and the tougher ones to call back is when the the official says it’s a good goal on a shot that might have been hit with a high stick because it is so hard to get those angles to have conclusive proof that the stick was in fact above the crossbar in a redirection but the waves have to reset barely one to nothing you’re listening to Molson Leaf hockey on TSN 1050 in last year but they have certainly gone about it quite differently they averaged 3.59 goals per game last year this year 2.93 but goals against two uh 3.24 a year ago and 2.55 this time around so here’s doy trying to get a shot away but it went off a skate in the slot and the Red Wings get it out at Center still one- nothing Detroit gersson got it to the leaf Blue Line taken away by Timmons forced back out then shot back in by Detroit Leafs will regroup but they make an errant pass and it turns into an icing and will be brought back into the Toronto Zone that’s a goal are only seven to five favoring the Red Wings but it feels like a much more wide openen game than that doesn’t it well the bells of St Mary’s have been going off at both ends of the Ring three or four posts I believe three three for sure two by the wings and one by the leaves and we got a goal called back dra to the right of Joseph wall way Billy whoo in goal for the Red Wings Phil does not have a win on the season Red Wings won in Buffalo but he was yanked after the first period did not get the decision cering pass to flex wide to the leaf goal DOI trying to knife it out had it blocked Leafs will reach gain and play it around the boards but now benois is in a foot race to try and get it out the battle ensues right at the Blue Line kept in by Detroit knocked with a high stick and then shot out off the helmet of sherat back into Detroit territory 534 to play first period one to nothing favor of the Detroit Red wi shot down into the Lea end walls scooping it along the boards to find pachetti pachetti gets out but tares was upended as he tried to get to a loose Puck played through Center but intercepted brought back now by the Le and over the line is mccab dropping it back in a centering pass for nander didn’t work grabbed off by pater ready tried to send it in front and then was knocked down on the play by sherat and three Wings bring it to Center Lin in on the left wing with a shot that was stopped the rebound came to the side of the goal ovms down there by wall doesn’t collect the puck kept in at the point with a long shot that deflected wide kavaris forces the puck out at Center ice and will start a change for Toronto quickly brought back by cider played in on the left wing around the boards Edinson got it around back of the net grabbed off by Matthews but stolen back by the Red Wings as they get it to the point Edinson keeping it in rink wide pass from fiser blocked by nce nce has it knocked off his stick chipped ahead to him though he’ll try to find an open wing and gets it to Matthews Matthews at Center played it in for Marner Marner Works into the slot area dropping it back Matthews trying to tow drag it and couldn’t get it around the last Defender gustofson sends it into the lead Zone Matthews quickly plays on and played by n in over the line Marner hustles after the puck tried to flip it in front of the net but it was deflected back of the goal and on the near boards they battle for it cleared in around back of the net and Justin Hall the former Leaf clears it out at Center only to have it blocked there by probably someone who took his job and Simone benoa Paul with it again got it out at Center Ice kicked up by Tyler Mt to his stick Mott works it on the right wing going wide missed a hit there by Timmons the puck has played High to Center Ice couple of collisions there least get it down into the Zone but doer got out of his reach and now here is cider playing it around the boards for the wings to get it to the line tanov attempted to pinch but couldn’t keep it in it comes back out at Center ice and can of now slapping it down into Detroit territory Puck stolen by the lease but unable to get a shot away there quickly was P his homber Edinson back of the goal to reorganized for Detroit with under three minutes to play in the first period Mar cider back of the goal Leafs being outshot nine to five defective Nets though because they must be a bit smaller as they’ve hit the post three times down into the corner it goes played off the boards and now here’s nander a pass up on the left wing and brought in over the line trying to return the favor was Taris but the putt comes free and Kane works it on the wing and he fired the shot off the glove of wall and wide of the goal Neil Ander back at Center to pater ready with a long shot that went wide Neil Ander playing it around back of the net Patcher ready with time now tries to work away from it dropped it off grabbed off there by Fraser mitton Minton tackled and taken down petti can’t get it in front neander was stationed there but the wings have gotten it out into neutral ice Conor Timmons off mitton and into the Zone it goes back to the je Petri along the boards for sherat he couldn’t get out here’s Minon pass on the left wing side doy in front and the shot went off a stick it comes back to the point kept in by Timmons along the boards now for doy to get it into the corner Bobby McMahon comes out with a shot and it’s into the chest and I think for the first time in the game Billy huso has stopped play and holds the puck for a Faceoff in the Detroit Zone well technically he stopped play on the uh goal that was reviewed a good point yeah no yeah I I stand corrected I stand correct I keep track of all right good well you know what you a lot of action to it even though the shots are just 9 to six there’s been some great flow Leafs win the face off and keep it in with a centering pass that went off a stick and the wings now get it out and down the ice wall has to handle that and then mccab got it up on the wing but aent pass and the Red Wings shoot it right back in again minute nine to go on the period Matthews starting away nicely handled off the skates by Marner Marner trying to return the favor Matthews gets it back to him Marner with a wrist shot blocked another pass goes around back of the net cut off by the Red Wings Marner got to it first couldn’t get it in back of the goal and the wings are going to play it to the line but not out kept alive there by emman Larson now a turnover in the corner Matthews tries to Center and it was fanned on as he spun around and never reached Marner who was out in front of the net Wings send it back into the Toronto Zone Morgan Riley circling the net Riley starts back at Center he’s going to send it in and around the boards into the near corner back of the net out of the reach of pachetti Red Wings bring it back fiser sending it down into the Zone round back of the net tripped up there was the leavs as it comes back to the point 12 seconds left to go in the period shot deflect wide of the Toronto gold punched ahead pater ready will just get it to the line and Oak and the final seconds will tick down without any more damage done at either end so just the one goal on a bit of a seeing eye shot by Jeff Petri who gets his first goal of the season from voleno and fiser at 9:07 and the red Wings own a one- nothing lead yeah Leafs did respond they did get a goal but it was called back because it was deemed offside but I think you would just say Joe wouldn’t you that stick with it because I thought the Leafs know the top two lines had a lot of jump and a lot of offensive zone time in the opening 20 minutes we will step aside for Jim taty and Anthony number there because every single one of you that have hit that subscribe button that have become an Insider you are part of this amazing community and you make this community what it is so let’s have some fun back in the chat tonight cheers to all of you insiders Go Leafs Go we’re beating the wings tonight I’m booking it now call It Go Leafs Go came up a little bit short but looking for them now to find a way to get a little bit more sustained pressure on the power play a couple more shots they had zero shots on that first power play but uh again you’re on the road uh it’s been a lot of hockey in the last uh you know week or so here too only down one you’re in pretty good shape by heading into the final 40 plus I would agree with all of that I I just want to go to the power plays cuz both teams had one I thought Detroit’s power play looked pretty good and and the Leaf’s power play should have been able to take advantage of of a really bad PK but but they couldn’t yeah I know I know but you know the numbers suggest that you know otherwise but uh you know for Detroit like they they got some solid players there you saw teras senko you know he’s pretty decent Patrick Kane had an opportunity as well so these are some solid guys and you know you’re looking on the back end with Evanson and cider these guys are huge big bodies take up a lot of space time and space so you know they’re going to have to adjust their game plan uh to try to get some more pucks through on some of these decent guys they’re young but they’re energetic they have size you saw rasmon on in the front on Petrie’s goal as well too like they’re the the stats don’t show up but they’re a pretty decent team uh the I think it’s the best well I’m not going to say it’s the best Detroit look because as I rhymed off at the start even though they’re losing games they’re one goal game so one goal losses so they’re in a lot of these games so I I guess not a surprise that it’s one- nothing Detroit after 20 minutes of play no they’re competing and I remember going into Joe Lewis Arena I think it’s a Little Caesar’s building now too I’m kind of hungry mentioning that but it’s a tough building to get into because uh when they’re competing and they’re winning it’s a pretty loud building uh the lighting’s a little bit dimmer than normal it’s a tough tough building to play in and everybody now gets up uh playing for the against the Toronto M believe so there’s no easy games but uh if I’m Craig Berube going into that first intermission hey guys let’s stick with it let’s you know try to get out of our Zone a little bit quicker here let’s be careful of the neutral zone stretch passes by Detroit and let’s get a couple more hits here let’s get a little bit more physical make it tough for their defense to get out of their end and sustain pressure and just on the marner’s uh goal that was called back this team will break down in the dzone so find a way to have them break down by just you know playing uh your positions a little bit more solid play a little bit harder in the corners get the pucks of the points get to the net and eventually you’ll get one or two througho Leafs down one nothing after 20 minutes of play this is mson Canadian Leafs hockey on TSN 1050 in the Leafs radio network the scrape of blades The Clash of sticks hockey’s more than a game it’s unrelenting never give up moments managed to uh come over the Ambassador Bridge and the tunnel and soon to be opened I understand was that not open Gordy how bridge I don’t think it is yet I now I I could be wrong on that but I don’t believe it’s open yet but very very close if it isn’t open yet now what would a Gordy how hatrick be on the Gordy how bridge probably two collisions two collisions one one real big one a side swipe a side swipe and a collision let somebody in yeah and then cut them off yeah and then hit him and then and then drill them drill them into the into into the guard rail now now if you drilled him hard enough and he went over the guard rail and into the Detroit River that’ be a penalty yeah that would be that would that wouldn’t be a yeah but only a two back only two two oh yeah we’re just underway as the Puck’s gone into the Detroit bench we should work in advertising shouldn’t we oh we could really make a lot of money there couldn’t we yes an advertisement for the Gord yes yes how many times did you get to meet gardy can you you know yeah I I mean many I was very fortunate yeah so was I and boy you couldn’t meet a nicer man he and Johnny Bower were absolute booom buddies uh from out west and the end of the year they were off fishing together most of the time as the Leafs get a shot at the net but it’s blocked grabbed off by neander on the rightwing boards dropped it back tovarus to the Blue Line Walking the line emman Larsson can’t get it to the net without having it go off a stick and go up into the screen and out of play and just to finish that there’s a great photo in the Press Box the Foster hu Press Box in at Scotia Bank Arena with Johnny being interviewed after winning the Stanley Cup and win over the Detroit Lines and big Gordy with his arm around his buddy from out west and uh that’s one of my absolute favorite hockey photos of all night and it’s not until the cup to be presented that they could be friends again absolutely at the point a shot deflected in front of the goal tipped off the toe of huso and went wide played around the boards the Leafs trying to pinch to keep it in mccab has done just that as it goes around back of the net Red Wings trying to get it out tipped there by Marner grabbed off by Matthews from the corner a shot right on stopped the puck goes back on the boards and now kept in by knce swept around by the Red Wings cider it’ll come to the blue line and now maybe another turnover no the Red Wings will get it out at Center they’ll work to the Lea blue line and in on the left wing off es skate it goes n is able to free it up and it’s brought out by Chris tanov tanov Works to his backhand on the near boards and flips it in and now Matthews being dragged to the bunch because the blade of his his skate came off shot from a sharp angle I think that went off the goal post on the near side of Joseph wall that was comical and how many times have we seen that Bobby Hasting has some repair work to do on the leaf Captain skate could at least be able to throw a rope or something out to exactly now here’s a breakdown for Bobby McMahon in and a good save by huso puck is kept in by the maple Lees in around back of the net goes Patrick Kane played High to Cent ice Leaf’s trying to chip it back in again but the wings get some momentum here and Justin Hall carries into the Toronto Zone taken to the boards by Holberg homberg trying to free it up Hall comes out with it Hall with a shot from an angle that went well wide Cider at the right Point goes back into the slot area and a shot taken by bergren went wide of the net bergren is crumpled up against the boards then doy gets spun around Wings keeping it into the slot trying to flip it in towards the net and it was deflected off the side of the goal k forcing it back up the boards and now starts out with it Conor Timmons getting to the red line and he’ll shoot it in the leasts in need of a change of players Red Wings going back into their own Zone Edmonson lays it up on the right wing side launched High to Setter ice Riley couldn’t knock it down Wings chasing after it flip it in front of the net and went off the top of the Stick of Tyler M and up into the screen and out of play and Matthews appears to have his skate restored and and it was just a pass that knocked the blade out of the skate boot Jake mape looked like he was using a curling rock is he trying to spin Matthews towards the house meaning the bench of course and he uh had a little extra weight on and was sliding past the door till they were a able to get a hold of them and pull him into the into the [Music] doorway Red Wings win the face off in the leaf Zone play it around back of the net comfor trying to get it back to the point they go D to D near side for pink Petri shot that deflected wide kept in again with a shot from the blue line that’s blocked bounces in front of the net High Puck goes into the corner back to the point Petri with another shot and that went wide the leaves hemmed in their own end here a little bit Red Wings getting it back to the Blue Line they’ve taken turns shot stopped there by wall Puck turned over Riley gets it ahead for pater ready back to Riley Morgan Riley in pass on the wing for neander and he couldn’t handle it on his backand Petri getting it back at the net Ben sherat taking his time as he gets it ahead Petri launching it high into the a in canv plays it on the back hand but doesn’t get it out Red Wings then turn the puck over and N glances it off the glass to get it into neutral I 1550 to play second period and it is still one- nothing Detroit on a goal by Jeff Petri in the first period Leafs in their own Zone mccab got it away from Rayman Pam trying to give it back to him and Matthews read it up long rink wide pass for knce didn’t connect cannibal send it in leavs are changing and so are the Red Wings cider a pass ahead and brought through neutral ice in on the right side partially deflects McMahon couldn’t come up with it and it is played back down into the Toronto Zone but it’s offside and play will be stopped with a faceof coming with 1512 to go in the second period and the Red Wings leading by a score of one to think we got of what the counted three goal post crossbars now for the Red Wings in this game though some of them from sharp angles total of four for both teams if I’m my mathematics is correct it’s 3 to one isn’t it yep Leafs W 3-1 November the 8th the first meeting between these two teams this season played out into the Center Ice Area Kane brings it to the line Tred to get a return pass he’s in a goal and the left pad of Joseph wall denies him at the short side played in around the boards and out of the corner is Kane again Kane dropping it off played into the corner by De brinkin backed along the wall for Justin Hall he loses the puck and it is quickly played ahead and Minton comes to Center doy chipping it in over the line but not far enough to get it to to mitt now he tries it again only to have it cut off and it is brought back by the Red Wings and sent back into the Toronto Zone another big time save by Joey wall as he got that left pad out there ptis Holberg got it free now he gets it in front of the net and it bounced over his stick and trickled harmlessly wide of the goal Riley in neutral ice for Ekman Larson shot back into Detroit territory Loren with a shot blocker away nicely by vly huso and cleared to Center Ice by Detroit played by the leaes back ahead for Loren in along the boards for Fraser mitton around the boards it’ll go to The Far Side egman Larson pinches derer into the four check now just missed his Red Wing player then mccab gets back in centering pass oh and it was deflected wide of the goal as der had a great setup there from neander Back to the blue line for tanov L side for mccab back along for Willie Neil Ander can’t get to it doers sends it around the boards it’ll be on to the Stick of tanov worked into the corner now stops it up Works back towards the point still with it sends it back in behind the net for pater ready pater ready looking in front for Taris and a went off escap and it’ll come all the way out into the center I area boy if he finds Taris a split second earlier dearis might have had an empty cage on the far side rightwing side leavs in across the line Patcher ready on his backand off the Blocker of Uso kept Alive by Willie back to the point and a shot at the from the left Point by benah was off a body and went harmlessly wide and benw will have to go all the way back into his own Zone to regain the puck a long lead pass at Setter missed Marner and a nicing call is coming as a result second period brought to you by molon whether it’s Canadian Ultra Sporter Excel there’s a molsen with your name on it first it was Patrick Kane at one end that Joseph wall was able to get the left hat on and then Connor Durer boy the puck just skipped didn’t it looked like he had the empty side as neander found him from the left wing Circle Wings win the draw and drill a shot in on goal stopped by Wall play out at Center Red Wings with a dozen shots on goal the lease with 10 puck in the Center Ice Area waiting for teammates to get onside Marner with a shot off the glove not caught cleanly but then covered by Billy huso and he will hold on Mitch Marner is like playing against the Detroit Red Wings he has scored 15 times against the wings in his career and the next highest Florida and Ottawa with 13 looked like he had his 16th but it was called back for an offside you’re listening to molsen Leaf hockey instruction ever been late now I will tell you it’s story about the Ambassador Bridge Mr Ralph after the winning goal by Paul Henderson in the 72 Canada Russia series we watched the replay with a lot of alcohol involved and then decided to March the Canadian flag across the Ambassador Bridge to show The Americans how you handle the Russians we got on the bridge but not very far before some people of authority thought it wasn’t nearly as impressed as we were and sent us back to her on haul our residents can’t believe you just turned back wellow we were scared incarceration was threatened I believe once that buzz wears in a big hurry yeah Red Wings bring it in on the right wing side Raymond tries to Center and it was intercepted and N will now work it out at Center and get to the red line and then feet completely fan on the shoot in and the puck now against the boards and n’s keeping it in momentarily but the Red Wings get it out and get it down into the leaf Zone wall scooping it around the boards to The Far Side and it will come out at Center the wings couldn’t touch the puck to keep it in because there would add too many men on the ice now McCade trying to take advantage of that misc works it down into the corner karus back of the net for neander in the near Corner neander getting it into the slot Patcher ready shot and a crowd just kind of deflected I don’t think youo saw that till he heard it now neander with a shot that was stopped I Believe by petti in front of the net it comes around the boards to the near side tavarus hustling after it got it to the line but couldn’t keep it in and sherat now battles with Patcher ready and the puck comes free and the Red Wings trying to get into the Zone just shoot it in as rasmon will head to the bench pater ready long rink wide pass neander along with Neil Ander trying to feather it back in there for Taris then had it blocked got it back into the slot a shot deflected wide from the Blue Line didn’t have an awful lot on it but I don’t know as huso even saw it but it went wide still one- nothing Detroit we are 20 seconds away from the midpoint in the game Bobby McMahon back into the lineup with a shot off of the chest of huso Puck comes around the boards and back out at center ice mitton frees it up and across the line a tow drag move by DOI and he couldn’t get by the last defenseman brought back now by the Red Wings de Brink de Bret gets it down into the corner given a bump on the boards the puck comes up on the fire Wing Leafs get it freed up and out comes Minon to Center Fraser Minton hits the line left wing side got a shot away but off a stick harmlessly wide gets it again in the corner though tries to center it’s come back to the point it will be trapped there by the Leafs emman Larson and played in as the Leafs are trying to get a change of players going and they do but the Red Wings take advantage and are able to get it out in Center to Brink it after it catch come up with it then had it knocked off his skates there by emman Larsson and it is ptis Holberg taking the puck to safety and now looking for an outlet and got it ahead off the Stick of Loren who now shoots it into Detroit territory a dozen shots each for the teams just the one goal shot from the point into the glove of huso and he’s going to cover up and wow there’s going to be a penalty for this well got cross checked across the neck as bergren is going to take the penalty I believe the arm of the F referee went up this was well after the whistle well Berman’s complaining about something with his mouth yeah I think he’s trying to claim that he got the stick in the face first oh wow I don’t think so I don’t know hopefully the Leafs will be going on the power play to try to tie things up yeah we’ll try and saying Hey to Brink it pulled you into one no hting so here we go face off to the right of huso kavaris I’m waiting for the puck to drop and when it is it’s controlled by Detroit and slapped around the boards and good block over there by Marner gets it over to Riley into the corner Den neander back to Riley over to Marner working to the right wing top of the circles and now the half boards drops it off for Matthews behind the net for Marner trying to Center had it blocked he gets it again Marner with it once more Works back to the left wing side to the half boards on the left wing side back to Riley cross ice to Matthews stepped around one but didn’t shoot it back to the point to Riley again Riley holds to Willie Neil Ander on the near half boards back to Morgan Riley now to Matthews and the one timer and that was weak and wide of the net kept Alive by neander back of the net now for Marner Marner curling out still with it Miner holes still in the slot off in the side they score one timer Austin Matthews ties the game and there won’t be an offside here this plower play works because of Mitch Marner Joe he was in constant motion with the puck and eventually things opened up Marner took the pass behind the net from Willie neander then worked his way out leftwing side middle of the ice and then throws it back against the grain Austin Matthews who’s one-time finds the net on vly huso but the the whole reason everything opens up is because Mitch Marner is moving it’s not Five Guys standing stary passing the puck around the outside and that all started Joe on that face off where Mitch Marner raced over to the rightwing board keep the Pu in and kept the puck in yes which if he was the Lone defenseman probably doesn’t happen right well maybe if it’s anybody else I mean Mitch is so good at anticipating you’re right all right I I I’ll give you that that they as soon as the draw went back to the corner Mitch Marner bolted to The Far Side Austin Matthews had 14 goals a year ago through 20 games that he played that is his 10th of the season now so some work to be done but no one really kind of expected that he was going to score 69 goals again as it comes to Cent I and now doy looking to make a pass to get it into the Zone finds mccab and mccab will drill it in Mitch Miner with another primary assist and the Red Wings are able to break it out at the center ice area neander draws the additional assist good Pat save made by wall and now he’s able to cover up on it and hold for a face up as we mentioned Dennis hild Toby is the backup goal tender and is expected to play tomorrow night when the Leafs host the Buffalo Sabers but arur akov has really been the star between the pipes for the Toronto Marley’s he is 80 and one with a 1.84 goals against average and a 929 save per percentage so I’m not sure whether it’s a contractual situation or whatever but hild Toby who is already under contract for sure is the goal tender who will come up and his record is 22 and two with the Marley thus far and a 2.13 goals against average so the least goal tending is very deep and it has been very very very good yeah Matt Murray left with an injury a couple of nights ago as well marer gets the puck ahead and now n back on the left wing for Matthews Matthews swinging it around the boards and it’ll be trapped over there by Conor Timmons who brings it to the net with a backand that stopped there’s a scramble and it’s cleared into the corner n getting it back to Marner who’s filling in at the point played into the corner now for Matthews who brings it out and drops Minner with it once more Marner being forced but he gets it off on the wing here’s Riley looking back looking for Marner still has it cross ice pass to find emman Larson Eckman Larson back in for or for Loren Loren in against the boards leavs in the middle of a change Loren playing it around the wall and it’s going to bounce past Timmons and come out into the Center Ice Area a one-1 tie pass up on the right side for homberg homberg a little stutter step Shields the puck nicely back hands behind the net for Len Loren tries to Center and it went off a couple of sticks but then the Lea keep it in momentarily only to have the Red Wings get it out at Center two on two rushing across the line from an angle the shot goes off the side of the goal harmlessly and it is derer trying to get it up on the wing but failing and voleno gets it now for Detroit back of the net near corner for M back to the point long shot by hall went wide of the goal rebound on the left wing side and wall got over there to block that side off leavs back at the net with mccab finding Riley Riley pounding it on the glass let’s hope it hit the glass but it’s gone into the stands but he’s not headed towards the Penalty Box so we are assuming there is no penalty but Austin Matthews has tied the game on the power play for the maple leags it’s 1-1 you’re listening to molsen Leaf hockey on TSN unfortunate that it would have been how great would it have been if he would have been able to score a goal and a Willie assist yeah absolutely by the way Fortin still a lot of season to go a lot of lot of more possible injuries no kidding Leafs get the puck up on the boards pater ready unable to get it out it comes into the slot and trying to get a one-time away there was Christian fiser and he lost his balance and it went nowhere Leafs get it out at C Ice steal it back now Taris with a couple of nice moves drops off for neander neander trying to drive the net and it was stopped on the short side you love Will’s determination to take it to the hoop though Bou brought by pachetti back to the point Cade can’t find an Avenue descendant tanov neither goes to tarus tarus dropping for tanov dropping for nander into the slot will he closes now goes around back of the goal neander trying to Center and it went off a stick grabbed off and a shot by McMan and that deflected wide of the goal tavarus was upended leaes Come Away with the loose Puck tarus has gone to get his stick now he’s got it in his hands and he gets the puck back took a shot wide rebound McMahon and Uso reached back and was able to take that away from Bobby McMahon as the leaf applied a lot of pressure now have the edge and shots at 1814 that was almost 45 seconds of Puck control in the red wi in and it started with neander taking it to the net Ben shro was there and then Bobby McMahon and John devaris both had a couple of opportunities after for that it would have been great if tovaris would have scored having the thick slash out of his hand he had to go get it off the boards and as soon as he picked it up neander dropped it back to him now a scrum in the faceof circle controlled by Detroit and the Red Wings will carry out its Center ice and clip it into the Toronto Zone Conor Timmons hustling back played around the boards for Marner Marner backand and got it ahead n gets to Center got it in over the line now Matthews follows up couldn’t get a shot it it came in front Matthews couldn’t get a stick on it Red Wings bringing it back played up on the wing Raymond into the slot area for Larin and a shot glove save made by wall and he’s going to hold on you know there’s lots of talk about the big five and the and all of the scoring and everything else you know what we haven’t talked a great deal about how steady Connor Timmons has been this year there’s a guy that literally had to make the team in training camp well and and we’ve talked about how good defensively as a whole they’ve been but let’s maybe throw a little sunshine on Connor Timmons yeah and you’ve got to remember as well he had the great training camp last year and then was injured before the start of the regular season and it took him a while to get back in that’s part of the reason shimone Beno is a regular now Paul off a Faceoff win got it around back of the net to Brink it got it in front front but it went off a stick and then slid very slowly to the front of the crease and Joseph wall decides he better stop play and bring a face off in the Toronto zone game tied 1-1 as Austin Matthews has scored in the second period on the power play after Jeff Petri opened the scoring for Detroit in the first period e Ro shooting the Red Wings 12 to6 here so far in the second period [Music] face off in the Toronto Zone Tavaris scrum the draw but it comes back to the points kept in by the Red Wings into the slot for Hall long shot deflected wide of the leaf goal goes into the corner tavarus had a pretty good handful of Jersey there for the Red Wings was kind of water scheme behind him no call now Tavaris flips it into the Detroit Zone but he hadn’t crossed Center ice and so an icing call coming as a result pretty easy call when you see half the Jersey still in the guy’s hand and he’s about 4 feet behind you it’s not easy to get a good RP with the glove on but those hockey gloves no the brink it out for the Red Wings by the way from the 2016 draft class the brink is third in scoring he was a second round pick but behind only Austin Matthews and Matthew could chook shot from the point block rebound shot on goal stopped by wall 317 to play in the period Leafs get the puck out at Center and it will be tanov trying to play it ahead and it goes off of sticking into Detroit territory Wings ring the boards with it Kane just chips it out at Center carried to the line and in by Andrew cop drop pass for de brinkin now on trying to drive the net and going in front with sherat then a shot by shot was deflected wide of the Lea goal played High to Center Ice sherro B a jump ball is able to settle it down but then an errant pass is intercepted by neander he comes to Center in on the left wing for Bobby McMahon thought about shooting it then back handed it to the net and Neil Ander got a rebound and he almost flipped that past the shoulder of uh huso brought to set ice again by the Red Wings and shot in boy will he’s got a little jump to his step tonight too doesn’t he there a lot of players have have let the top two lines have looked outstanding brought to Center Ice Now by Connor der left wing side centering pass tried to get a shot away was Holberg then a wrist shot by Loren went off a body and wide ptis Holberg getting it back to the point Riley sends it purposely wi it comes in front of the goal oh and yo had to do a bit of a Irish two-step there to get out of the way or he was going to kick that back into his own goal Morgan Riley deliberately fired it wide now back of the net Tim’s wrap around attempt and a shot came in front of the net and Holberg deflected It Wide Holberg off a rebound gets it back to Connor derer least fourth line here doing a pretty good job and against the boards Loren got it back to the point here’s a shot by kimmons and it’s swallowed up by huso who is going to hold on and bring a face off in the Detroit Zone with a minute 28 left to play in the period Bo that was a perfect bang shot by Morgan Riley from the left Point traffic in front so instead of trying to get it on net he missed the net deliberately by about what 6 feet Y and it bounces off the backboards comes out off the side of the net and of course there’s that space between the post and Billy husso so he jumps so it doesn’t go off him an in but unfortunately leash didn’t have somebody else there that could have put the Pucket empty that no Riley is Irish I don’t believe Billy huso is so Irish twostep maybe well Morgan Riley could have been playing the instrument I suppose which he did oh never mind he just going nowhere I’m out I’m out you’re you’re done minute three to go in the period Matthews tried to set her and got it to Marner who couldn’t make a play now cider gets it up on the wing and nce couldn’t keep it in brought back the the other way now by Detroit n knocks the puck away now looks to play it up the boards ran into traffic Red Wings are keeping it in down into the corner it goes they battle along the near boards Matthews breed it up it goes around back of the net Marner just wants to find an outlet and can of will with a half minute to go in the period as the Leafs are changing their forward compliment comes to Center or I thought they were no they’re not brought back in now by the by the Red Wings a centering pass in the slot dropped it back and a shot scores in retrospect maybe they should have changed cider gets the goal after the Leafs get hemmed in their own end when Matthew n is unable to make a simple pass up the boards and that created the problem and the Red Wings score a late one to restore the lead it’s two to one and this was a pass middle of the ice that goes off on and Matthew skate and the Red Wings give them credit a great passing play that found Mor at cider wide open to the slot you had five Leafs between cider and the net but everybody was focused on the far side and the pass Came Back Against the Grain and the Red Wings will take their oneg goal lead again back to the dressing room after the second and that’s after an outstanding period for the lease ceriz turnover to them fourth goal of the season for cider and time will run out so a late goal by the Red Wings negates a good period by the Maple Leafs and the Leafs have work to do in the third as they Trail by a two to1 count it is uh we’ll step aside here for Jim taty and Andrew Stewart the second period intermission is next just listenting gsen Leaf hockey on TSN 1050 in the maps radio network the world one Insider at a time we’ll see you in the chat and holy movh go Lees be uh leading you know that you got to take that into the third period and stay positive and not let that one goal uh be a back breaker for your group well still 20 minutes to go so plenty of time but but I thought in that second period as the period progressed the leaves cleaned up a lot of stuff and actually took the game over yeah they did and uh you know Detroit was the team I think that had a lot of one and done plays off the rush or in the corner and uh you know they did have uh eight shots but I believe maybe two or three in the last 10 minutes of that period so Toronto was foot on the gas 15 shots that period uh all four lines were getting in on the offense the fourth line near the end almost had a goal uh near the end of the second period as well too so all systems are going but you need to find a way to keep that momentum and capitalize on that momentum so that’s you know if we have to find uh something to be pessimistic about yes they should maybe have been up 2-1 or 3-1 uh but the positive was the power play got them back into the game and that’s something that uh in in the last couple weeks wouldn’t have happened so uh yes you can have a couple gripes on just sort of the puck Management near the end but uh if I’m Craig brube yes you’re going to you know mention that last play in the end of the period there but you know keep going with the system and I think eventually Detroit’s going to break I I didn’t realize the road power play for the leas was that bad but but it is the St I think that’s their fifth power play goal on the road all season long but I in in in a weird sort of way Mitch Marner himself did what what you want to do on a power playe break down the box he had three guys chasing him and and it was a nice shot nice feed and a nice shot by Austin Matthews yes I’ve been talking about the volleyball laber where he’s all over the court and he started off behind the net and he he circled up to the top of the uh the circle towards the middle two three guys he drew in two of the penalty killers and what did that do him being being a shooting Ops and shooting in that first period Drew those coverages to him and opened up that lane and a beautiful finish from Austin Matthews from a near impossible uh angle so again I think that was uh a lot better power play where they’re more direct I’m not sure if you you saw Marner off the the beginning of the power play a lot of hustle he was direct he was skating he was moving his feet he was playing some good hockey uh and so you know you detailed that nicely about the fourth line the fourth line had a a really good shift just before the final 30 seconds the Top Line comes out and it looked like they ran out of gas or something and the turnover creates the goal but it’s unfortunate because um it doesn’t really tell you how well the least played yeah they played uh again it’s it’s it’s one thing to go by of the stats and the score sheet but uh the fourth line was getting involved they were playing some good hockey as well they were getting in on the for check sustained pressure they weren’t just killing time uh so it’s good to see them get involved McMahon has an extra hop in his step he’s playing great as well uh he had two or three opportunities to score uh so again eventually you just got to keep hammering it home and eventually it’ll you’ll bring it in and start scoring and I and I thought they were starting well I thought they won the majority of the one-on-one battles didn’t they they did win a lot of their one-on-one battles and that is the key and um it’s it’s easy to say hey well we have to find a way to put up more goals and sustain more offense but you just got to chip away slowly chip away and eventually it’ll come in bunches to sit there and say well you know you know the fourth line hasn’t scored they’re they’re noticeable uh they’re cre creating opportunities uh they’re getting involved and eventually the pucks are going to go through and you heard Craig breu talk about it when talking about the power eventually just keep tripping away eventually the results will come so another I guess another test for this how how the Leafs have to stay within the system even though it hasn’t rewarded them as it should you don’t give up on the system so they’re just going to have to do what they did in the third period you know or do what they did in the second period in the third period and and should be in pretty good shape yeah that’s a good game plan and you know the the the first period was wide open a bit of a track meet but I think Toronto you know cleaned it up a little bit in the neutral zone but that leaded that led to more offense right so they cleaned it up in the neutral zone I think they stuck to the system of advancing the puck below the dots simplifying their games uh they were much more direct you saw oel and mccave just firing pucks at will you know the one went off the back Dasher that almost was an opportunity so they’re almost just picking apart and keeping Detroit on their heels so the next go is is very very important you don’t want it to be a squeaker or off a bad turnover uh I think the first five seven minutes is very very key uh for the final result of this uh of this game just looking at my event summary and if I read this right Bobby McMahon has six shots on goal oh really let me see here I think I I I see the same thing and uh wow I had to look at that I thought they had nanders line missed up but uh but no it’s it’s McMahon with six shots on goal yeah and only eight and a half minutes of us are 8 minutes and 50 of ice time and he’s got three hits so if there’s any worries about him not hitting the ground running and coming back or any ill effect of that injury that’s not the case he’s been very very noticeable uh I noticed Minton as well too and and DOI a little bit so again that third line has been noticeable which is which is good I think it’s going to be a full uh four-line effort and the one thing I can say uh right now I think there’s only one leaf forward uh and that’s neander that’s trending above 20 minutes of ice time so the the ice time is balanced and that’s going to be key not just for the third period where you might have to give some extra ice to some of the guys but for tomorrow’s game versus the Buffalo Sabers good point so 2-1 Detroit after 40 minutes of Play Over the Leafs this is Molson Canadian Leafs hockey on TSN 1050 the iHeart Radio App and the Leafs radio down in Detroit City the Motor City as the Leafs uh had a late goal on a turnover and hemmed in and the Red Wings have restored the one- nothing lead that they had in the first period Austin Matthews scoring for Toronto Mitch Marner setting the goal up he has had the primary assist in 24.7% of the goals the Le leads have scored this year almost a quarter of the lead goals that have been scored he has the primary assist never mind the secondary assist and he has 307 now in his career and he’s fourth as far as the leaps are concerned and very much in a position to maybe supplant Matt sundine who has the most well what about the 10 goals too I mean that doesn’t figure into that no it doesn’t no he’s had a tremendous first part of this season he really has and we don’t know what the conversations are behind the scenes as he becomes a free agent July 1st as of now but you give them a lot of credit because a lot of guys can when you’re in that position it’s difficult to concentrate on what you’re doing right now but Mitch Barner has simply come out and just played Maybe just Excel ABS the best hockey he played in this career underway here in the third period leaves to the left and the Red Wings to the right pushed up on the boards and out on the right side it’s played by tovaris into neutral ice cider morid cider getting the goal they’re just announcing it now played down into the Toronto end round back of the net Ras mus got it into the slot a shot big save made by the glove of Joseph wall ecan Larson stands back at the Toronto goal waiting for teammates to change and now starts out with it long lead pass to Center Matthews spun around and knocked down but got the puck in deep Miner couldn’t track it and it’s set out and around the boards and down the ice and a nicing call coming here against the Red Wings will’ll bring the face off back into the Detroit Zone I many Bel this year when trailing after the second period pretty good record 47 and one when trailing after two their biggest comeback was when they were down late to the Washington Capitals it was 3-1 after the second 3-1 late LEF scored a couple before John tovaris won it in overtime Leaf win the draw Marner with a shot and traffic scores Mitch Marner let the shot go and I think it hits a red wing player because it took a bounce up into the net did it not Jimmy yeah it might have hit Matthew n was in with a couple of Red Wings around him I think he’s the first one to the bench for the high fives but you don’t think an icing call is going to come back to hurt you well it does here yeah is Matthew ni absolutely and it is deliberate it was hard to tell because he was being held up by Morris cider right in front of the red wi net and N was still able to knock the puck down and skip it past Billy hoo oh and guess who gets another I got to change all of my statistical information I don’t know what the percentage is now it was 24.7 before the game and now he’s got two oh oh I hate mathematics play outed Center and now the Red Wings and on the left wing with a shot that’s gloved by wall and stop what why don’t you spend the rest of the period figuring out the percentage sure I back to you Wednesday [Laughter] maybe yeah it’s uh a great play he comes back into the slot area between the defenseman and Matthews was there with Dylan Lin as well so there was a but n made a great play go to the front of the net make my stick available yeah he’s got his back to the red wi go center with a perfect deflection down played down into the Detroit Zone Wings chipping it out into the Center Ice Area down the right wing boards comes Tyler mck dropping it in stopped another there’s a big save and then they score on the rebound Jeff Petri to open the scoring for Detroit gets a lucky break after an enormous save made by wall no one there to help out and quickly the Red Wings have restored the 3-2 one goal lead that happens pucks bouncing at Center ice and Simon benoa got caught trying to one-and it and because of that he lost the step to M and the Leafs never do regain their composure Conor Timmons went sliding past the leaf net as the rebound bounced back out in front but it was just that little play Joe by Simone benoa who tried to make an interception had it get past him he lost his step and then the floodgates opened up so the Red Wings have regained another one goal lead and the Leafs have to try and battle back again knocked out of the air and kept into the Toronto Zone emman Larson ringing it around the boards to The Far Side McMahon didn’t get it out Riley didn’t get it out the first time does the second played back into the Toronto Ed wall leaving it for emman Larson played out at C ice but too far for McMahon to reach doy couldn’t block it Red Wings get it back in but Kane couldn’t get around the defense now McMahon sends it into the corner Leafs in the middle of a change is Conor der over the boards Red Wings bring it back it’s Center but unable to get in was voleno and now it’s back into the Detroit end hustling in there after it ctis Holberg Holberg got it to the side of the goal but couldn’t find dur who was station there and the Red Wings were able to get it back out at Cent ice good hit there by mccave as he stood up Jonathan bergren with a hit and the Red Wings can’t keep the puck in as it comes back at setar ice long shooting goes around back of the net Red Wings peeling to the bench brought by Beno and shot down into the Detroit Zone and the Red Wings have it again as they play it up on the wing Vladimir teraso gets it out at Center in over the line now for lin Lin around back of the Toronto goal one hands it back behind the net teras senko with it once more a centering pass just out of the reach of Lucas Raymond marer back the other way for Toronto going to launch it high and into the corner in the Detroit Zone Matthews into the four check Matthew n trying to help out Puck along the boards Marner back to the point shot went well wide of the net off emman Larson stick ni can’t come up with the loose Puck at the side of the goal teraso getting it out in Center leaves back back pedal into their own end to get some time and space 44 seconds apart the goals that have the Red Wings still leading by one mccab Chips the puck out into the center ice area in a race for but it’s going to be won by a Redwing Defender gustofson got it ahead played in over the the line trying to get a shot as cop it goes deflecting wide of the net Puck around back of the net cop with it again in the corner had it knocked off his stick tan of played it along the boards but doy couldn’t get it out initially and he does with a nice pass up on the left wing and it is Jake mccab getting to the red line and sending it into Detroit territory the Red Wings three the Leafs two first of back-to-back games for the Maple Leafs where back with you tomorrow afternoon at 5:00 when the Leafs will entertain the Buffalo [Applause] Sabers played into the center ice area and down into the leaf vent played for Timmons he got knocked off the disc back of the net it goes to rasm rasm centering and pass in front of the net and that was blocked before it reached the Tado cage tipped along the boards back to the point once more faking the shot then holding in long enough to get it in with Petri he has both or two goals of the three that the Red Wings have scored and hadn’t scored this season now he’s looking for the hattrick as he works it down into the corner and is upended and Timmons is going to get a penalty so Jeff Petri has had a pretty impressive game here and been all over the stat sheet because of it and drawing a penalty now to add a little salt to the wound of the Maple Leafs first one was a point shot C I shot from the right point that got past Joseph wall boy we’re looking at this again I think Petri steps on the buck Jo Puck was in his feet and I think Conor Timmons might have mentioned that to the official but this is not reviewable penalty kill brought to you by CMC Markets take your trading to the next level with Commission on stocks Red Wings keep the puck in off the faceoff win around the boards it’ll go to The Far Side second power play opportunity of the game for Detroit reliefs are one for two on the power play back to the point it comes to Raymond Raymond drops it back to the Blue Line cider back to Raymond top of the circle left wing side down low a centering pass off a stick Matthews trying to body his man but the puck comes back to the the Blue Line tier walks the line to the right wi side back it comes to R centering pass in front for lin and a one-time went off the Stick of Matthews up into the screen and out of play 125 to go here in this Redwing power play Austin Matthews and Mitch Barner doubling up getting both getting penalty kill time we’ certainly seen that with Marner over the years the bottom line is M you see Leon dry Sid out or Conor M David doesn’t kill a lot of penalties but you see Star players out killing penalties it makes you very aware when you’re throwing the puck across the Blue Line long shot from the point and deflex and goes up into the screen out of play another face off coming in the Toronto Zone as a result hey where Detroit’s been very good tonight and we saw it on the first goal by Petri is load up with somebody right in front of the net and take the eyes away from Joseph wall and just get the puck there more cider another simple wrist shot from the point with traffic in front I think that shot went off the mask of uh Joseph wall and up into the screen and the draw won by Toronto and benois will fire it off the boards and send it out and down the ice minute six to go in the power play 1305 to play in the in the third period Detroit three the leaves two Kane in across the line got it dropped off by De Brink it comes to the left wing side to tereno B over on the far side de Bret with it again looking down into the corner comes back to the point once more into the slot area to the left wing side a pass by tereno down a shot then tereno had it bounce away from him Lee just failed to tip it out as Connor dur just missed it kept Alive by Detroit side back to the point into the slot area again and a shot goes off a leg rebound is fired well wide of the goal the rebound is going to car him all the way out at Center Ice as one of the Red Wings took the wrong Avenue to the puck at the blue line or they would have kept it in puck back to the point now cider into the long cering pass and it bounced over a stick but tipped alive at the Blue Line Guston to the right wi side good block made by benois marer is going to get it to the line and out this should be a delayed off site and a lead pass brings Marner he’s it alone stopped by Billy huso what a chance that was and then the Leafs are going to get another penalty marer coming back got his stick Tangled Up in the feet of De Brink after missing the Breakaway that could have tied the game the Leafs will be a man short once more 32 in favor of Detroit and you’re we listening to molon Leaf hockey on TSN 1050 and the Maple Maple Leafs who have 38 points the same as the Florida Panthers with a game in hand are back to the Penalty kill and a big part of the game unfolding right here gustofson keeps the puck in on the right wing side it goes in a wrist shot is deflected the rebound came in front of the net and the Leafs get a hold of it and they quickly rifle it down the ice KN to the bench after icing the puck Marner in The Penalty Box for Toronto Kane coming through Center got it to the line broken up there and Loren will slide it out and down the ice for Toronto Patrick Kane of course who had his greatest Seasons as a Chicago Blackhawk has the puck now up on the right side brought in over the line by debrett played into the corner stolen by the leaves cleared to the line but not out on on the left wing side trapped there by teraso on the right wing it goes down into the corner Kane trying to get it back on the boards gets it back to the blue line for gustofson Guston into the slot that went astray topped at by benoa but not made contact with kept in by Detroit tereno back to the point gustofson over on the right wing side to Kane saucered back to gustofson back to Kane p holding on the far side trying to get it down low but unable to connect with Andrew cop and the Le get a hold of it now and send it out and down the ice 40 seconds left in the power play and this is an enormous kill here for the maps who Trail by a goal with 1023 left to play in the third Lin got it up on the right side and Raymond is Into The Zone and on the rightwing side broken up by the Maple Leafs but mccave can’t clear kept alive at the point in a shot and traffic is knocked down and then gathered up by the leaks and hammered out and down the ice for 15 seconds left to go in the power play Lin bringing it back at Center to the line and in Lin Works wide sented in front of the net and went off the heel of the Stick of its intended receiver Lucas Raymond back into the corner the penalty is over leaves are back at full and even strength and Marner comes through neutral ice he has been the game Star Marner works at the Blue Line tried to flip it into the slot area and it was knocked Away by the Red Wings sto Sten back by Marner and he looked for Matthews but Matthews hadn’t gotten into the Zone cleanly it comes back at Cent ice Matthews with it again lifting it high on a bounce just into the Zone played around the boards by cider Leafs are going to get there and Riley sends a shot to the net that is into the glove of huso and he will stop play and take us to a commercial break the leafes trail played out in Center break wide pass tavarus trying to reach it couldn’t get it into the zone and the Red Wings will bring it back Raymond sends it back down into the Toronto at Riley reversing the puck to find his defense partner and Oliver Ean Larson with it now I hate you brought on now by neander I’m over here Riley tries to chip it in front of the net and it’s played around the boards and to the line that’s a close play the Leafs have it in the zone though pater ready swinging it around to the Far Point Larson with a shot and he whistled It Wide that was very close at the Blue Line and would be looked at but it’s a moot point now as the Red Wings get it out and send it into the lead Zone up at Center it comes to nce kicked ahead for Matthews led into the left wing corner for the Lea Winger and knce gets it around back of the net cut off there by Lin Lin had it blocked it comes off nice stick in front of the net the shot by Matthews was blocked Away by huso ni put it on a te for Matthews now Marner gets it in front and it bounced over Matthew’s stick and it’s launched High to Center I boy this line has just been buzzing tonight yeah is there another one in them they’ve got the power play goal here’s the chance now Marner got it in over the line the Red Wings play it out at Center and it is tanov backing up in his own Zone 424 to go in the third period leaves Trail three to two into the corner it goes now McMahon trying to backhand it high to Center he has but it’s going to turn into an icing and so it’ll come back into the maple leaf Zone Leaf’s record against the Red Wings since January 1st 2017 mhm 20 wins four losses three overtime losses as you mentioned leaves handle the Red Wings 3-1 earlier in the season but the Red Wings are looking to put a dent into those numbers Matthews has had eight shots directed at the net four of them on goal and a goal on the power play gustofson gets it ahead to Kane Kane coming through neutral ice drops it off to Brink it play it off in the ring but a shot by cop deflect did wide pop gets it back to the point and unable to keep it in was Hall and now the leaves can’t get to it in time boy Willie NE in are very nearly cre a scoring chance there but the puck once he got it away from Hall skipped past him Paul after a loose Puck but it’s intercepted by the Le and brought in now by Loren a centering pass and it went right by pis Holberg back to the point Timmons with a shot good save made by the defenseman who had to almost uses uh arm like the blocking glove of a goal tender to knock that one away Puck intercepted in the neutral zone by Detroit brought into the leaf Zone Beren into the corner has it taken away trying to out muscle his man there was ptis Holberg as it goes to Timmons Timmons gets it back to him and it’s out at Center ice now and there’s derer sending it into the left wing Corner striding in there to get an angle on Petri as both players go to the ice Lees Come Away with the p can get it back to the point Timmons walks the line got a shot away but there wasn’t an awful lot of traffic in front of Uso who was able to glove that and hang on for a face off coming in the Detroit Zone pair of goals by Jeff Petri has got the Red Wings out in front 3 to2 with time ticking down in the third you’re listening to mol at Leaf hockey on TSN 1050 in the mays radio network hi it’s Jimmy for letting us know where you’re watching from and 550 to play in the third period but the face off in the in the Detroit Zone tarus scrummed the draw the puck into the corner tried to get it back to the point emman Larson kept it in momentarily but it was kicked out at Center and the Leafs Riley has to go back as the wings send it around back of the net Riley gets it up on the far boards but it comes out at Center ice and Detroit’s going to shoot it right back in or they tried that was broken up Leaf bring it back in with pater ready nice move to the front of the net and then he was stood up by Petri great move by Max patch already but Petri went right with him and uh couple of former Canadians probably that might have worked out in at a time on the on the ice in practice and now it’s sent down into the leaf end brought to the line and in and fed into the far Corner knocked down and interfered with there was Morgan Riley trying to go into the for check centering pass comes out and it’s back to the blue line and it’ll be out into the center ice area boy there’s been a couple of spots where the leaves could have gone to the power play here to even that statistic up and not called here in the last couple of rushes down into the corner Taris trying to get it free it comes back on the boards to tan tanov doesn’t get it in deep but then nce steals nce Works in front nce into the slot and Marner had his stick lifted at the last second shot goes wide and around the boards to The Far Side trying to pinch to keep it in but it’s played by Detroit outed Center Ice deflected back down into the Red Wing Zone leavs have 24 Shots on goal Red Wings have 25 Matthews being held there can’t get away from his check who’s got a pretty good glove on him that was Edinson but no [Applause] call Timmons off the boards on the right wing side for neander played out at Center uh DOI sent it back into the fence then got a pass up on his skates and comes to Center Max doy on the right side to Neil Ander closing doesn’t shoot it Willie hols now looks back to the Blue Line dropped off Timmons with a shot and traffic deflected wide neander with the rebound neander along the board sends it to the front of the net and doy deflected that wide of the goal kept in at the Blue Line though by Timmons along the boards McMahon back of the net doy couldn’t get to it now neander back of the goal for DOI doy trying to get away from the checking Petri doy kicking it free goes one hands it back towards the Blue Line Connor Timmons a nice spinning move and get it into the corner doy looking back into the slot again and a shot that was stopped and nander couldn’t find the rebound and the Red Wings have launched it high to the Tonto Zone Conor Timmons coming right back fan on a pass has to go back to retrieve the puck Lea in need of a change emman Larsson was going to go to the bench now finds Timmons who also needs to be exchanged as the pass comes ahead and it’s flipped into the Detroit Zone with 247 to play round on the boards to the near side and the wigs will get it out at Center ice tanov right back in across the line ptis Holberg couldn’t come up with it hit by der as the puck goes fre into the far Corner mccab couldn’t get to it pushed out at Center Ice Leaf will get it freed up and derer gives it off on the right wing for tanov tanov shoots it in with 224 to go McKay back of the net Tangles up with his man Puck is pushed around the wall but tanov is there to keep it in at the point Matthews into the far corner for Marner Marner with a centering feed that deflection is going high and out and down the ice gender wall still in the cage it’s not enough for icing two minutes to go I would think he’d be heading out very shortly Leafs with the puck in their own Zone neander coming down the left wing boards makes a move gains The Zone nicely works it into the corner and sends it back to the blue line mccab and N working in along the Boards N into the slot for Matthews extra attacker on the ice now as the net is empty Rings lose the puck in the near Corner Miner coming out on the backand stops it up back in for Matthews Matthews back to Marner Marner working with some ice back to the Blue Line Riley shot deflexed off a stick cleared out and down the ice but it won’t have enough to go or will it yes it does but it goes wide of the net Marner read that pretty well now drops the puck back and gets it returned on the rightwing side he’ll send a diagonal shoot Into The Far Side chopped High to the line but not out neander a good play to keep it in now into the corner is Matthews back it goes to Tois back to Matthews back of the goal to Riley at the point one timer on The Far Side by Willie was blocked Wings try to get it out it’s blocked again cleared out and down the ice but there’s a man back in Morgan Riley 45 seconds left Matthews shoots it in leaves down a goal Wings hanging on back of the net it goes into the corner pushed back to the blue line to nander nander off on the wing it goes to Riley back on the left wing side back it comes to Marner Marner holds still with it got a shot away it was blocked wings at an empty net wide iceing 21.1 seconds and they’ll have to look at that I’m sure Leafs really needed that about 40 seconds ago didn’t they because Matthews and Marner ended up they were out for over 2 minutes the recharge would have been nice marner’s wrist shot couldn’t get through the maze in front of vly Uso Billy huso as we said still looking for his first win of the season and he’s 21 .1 seconds away from getting it Leafs have called timeout Mark sard going over Pace off idea that they have in the offensive zone with 21.1 seconds remaining in the third period I believe the least the six uh what is it three shots on goal here in the third period they had a great second period I mean part of it was what took away from any kind of offense for the backto back penalties yeah 15 to8 were the shots favoring Toronto in the second period so here we go 21.1 seconds obviously the Leafs need the face off here Tavaris will try to Win It wings moving in the circle draw one by Toronto Neil Ander Works into the slot right wing side Matthews back to nander shot in front of the net deflected wide it comes back in with a shot that deflected wide of the goal 9 seconds left it comes in front again neander can’t get a shot the wings are going to get it out and a race to an empty net and they better hurry yep it will go in with one point 6 seconds to go boy Austin Matthews the puck came off the glass Matthews had turned around away from the net and the puck bounced right into his feet but the Red Wings will feel this one with the empty Nutter Mitch Marner shaking his head over on the leaf bench but Morgan Riley let the shot go and boy if Austin Matthews would have been able to pick that up Joe yeah he might have had an opportunity to try to jam it in Lucas Raymond gets the empty net goal and the Leafs have uh been victim IED by the empty net goals at a fairly uh substantial clip while the one game they gave up two and both of them were short-handed when they were on the power play so was in Pitts yeah they have not fared well with the goalie on the bench I think there were a lot of positives that came out of this game I thought they skated well moved the puck well Red Wings defended exceptionally well jamming up the front of the net if there is a downside they give up two goals off the rush and I would include the Jeff Petri the second goal because Red Wings entered the Zone off the rush and it was a rebound that eventually turned out to be the game winner well while the Buffalo Bills are in Detroit to play the Lions tomorrow the Buffalo sabes will be in Toronto to play the maple Lees tomorrow afternoon a rare and in my thought process first ever 5:00 afternoon start time for the Maple Leafs at home uh will be tomorrow and we will have that action for encouragement I love you babe you’re the best keep it up Go Leafs Go we’ll see you in the chat tomorrow big day enjoy the post game we’ll get the W tomorrow we’re going to beat the Sabers it’s happening and Jimmy Ralph kind up to hang around Ralphie you wouldn’t have to do a major edit job to come up with a leaf Victory there just couple things didn’t work out and it’s a loss yeah and you know it’s it’s funny because there was a lot of things that I liked about the game I thought they skated well I thought they moved the puck well um but the two things that bother you the the two goals you give up off the rush and uh you know the one was office skate from Matthews and the other one Simon benoa uh tried to play a bouncing Puck and it was just enough for him to lose a step and um Red Wings get the Zone on the outside and end up scoring on the rebound but um it I I know it sounds dumb to say but I think out of maybe the last five or six games they’ve played um I liked a lot about this one even though uh for whatever reason they uh they can’t seem to get that goalscoring magic back yeah Ralphie I think it was probably probably fatigue errors there but what about the cardinal sins of uh letting in a goal the last minute of a period or you know one when it’s the most important shift after you score a goal I’m sure Craig Brew’s not happy about those yeah and those were the two off the rush uh to Stewie and I think that’s uh that’s what bothers you I mean uh you think it’s a fairly I don’t want to say harmless pass but uh you know pass from your own end up the middle of the ice it goes off a skate and when that happens and you know you get a better better deflection it goes into the Red Wing Zone or it goes to the left wing but it hits Matthews perfectly and back the other way the the Red Wings come and um but yeah the uh what I can’t figure out is the offense where like I said I look up I thought you know naner had jump all night Matthews and Marner uh and n look great all night and yet um another two goal game four and uh it’s hard to figure out uh why they’re unable to finish I thought the key was the second period that uh you know once the Red Wings regained the uh the lead uh you thought uh you know what this this is going to be a tough night because leaks really could have been up by two or three I thought at the end of the second period I totally agree with that um and and those things you’re talking about those are things that they want to clean up those are you know playoff game uh no NOS you can’t do that um and and so it’s down to like fine-tuning and cleaning up little things I thought in the in the third period those two penalty kills uh you know sandwiched around the the Marner Breakaway that was just a you know th those were like I thought it was a good omen and nothing came out of it yeah and it’s uh and it’s such a momentum sapper as well um you know that uh uh it’s funny how I know I bring up this saying a lot uh but I think it it especially applies to the third period the old Ron Wilson line that we can’t control whether we win or lose only how well we play well if if Mitch Marner scores obviously then there’s no penalty then uh then you’ve got the momentum going back to the other way but um you know even for for Austin Matthews um you know it’s kind of a strange game where he finally scores in the power play only the second power play goal of the year then has the puck go off es skate for a turnover and a goal the other way way and you’re thinking you know the hockey gods don’t uh even though it’s Christmas uh they don’t hand out a lot of gifts without you paying for it uh Bobby McMahon seems like he hasn’t missed a beat uh five shots tonight three hits and it SE says only 1242 seems like he played a lot more than that but uh he made an impact on that third line tonight oh yeah he was very noticeable and and when we talk about the lead should have had the lead at the end of the second period McMahon had what three or four great chances in the second that were unable to go Chris tan of you remember in the first period on a pass from Mitch Marner um almost was able to tap it him but uh I agree with you Stewie I think uh Bobby McMahon had a lot of jump and uh it’s just funny you know you’re starting to get guys back now and now offense is a concern where you’re uh you’ve got your full compliment of forwards pretty much and uh for whatever reason it just has not clicked yet as far as finding the back of the net with Reg it I I think we have a six-game sample size here so the win over Nashville um the loss against Washington loss against Pittsburgh win over New Jersey win over Anaheim lost tonight in Detroit and I think that we all after each one of those games where we talked it would have been the same tone even in a victory um looks good but but you need more or you know you need more goals obviously uh there’s nothing egregiously wrong here but it’s not totally right either is it well and you know what and here comes the test where it’s you’ve got to stick to the plan uh you know what de you are sacrificing a little bit of offense but you’ve got to stick to the plan you don’t start thinking all right we got to leave the Zone early we got to make high-risk pinches in the second period but to try to create offense because it’s not coming that easily this is this is a pretty good test um you know as they try to find that perfect balance between last year’s offense and this year’s uh better defensive play game in less than 24 hours here do you go back with Joseph wall or do you put the beast in net tomorrow boy that’s and the only reason I would uh I would maybe stay away from the backto backs as Stewie is simply because uh the injury to stolar you know that uh you know you don’t want to maybe uh put wall in a position where even if he’s slightly V and and more vulnerable to an injury uh I believe Lena hmark played um tonight again Ottawa if I’m not mistaken and he played last night against Carolina so um it can be done and I know jimy you sent me that text on uh Grand fear one year playing 79 79 games yeah for the St Louis Blues uh you know I I don’t think it’s impossible I I just think that um not not that you’ve got a protect wall but I think maybe is um you know now that you’re down to one of your your top two um I I think maybe you protect him a little bit uh um by signning uh hild Toby back in and for hild Toby it would be his first home start as well and fur the next year played 73 so I mean he had the no time off yeah and and look and look at Marty broder’s numbers I think he was next at at 78 and 77 um yeah like Joe asked me on the air he said would how would you like to be his pup I said I’d love it you know but what are you going to cut me the next year cuz I wasn’t any good you know well no bonus money but well maybe maybe if if you don’t play more than five games we’ll pay you a bonus a negative bonus I’d like to see the agent who could slip that one through uh so again tomorrow against Buffalo uh this game as we say was was winnable it just didn’t happen and and I guess uh you know they’re just going to keep playing the system which is fine I I think they’ just got to you know you’re talking about cleaning up like like two minor plays that you know really it’s a bounce oh yeah yeah and um and again you get another bounce at the other end maybe it goes in and um you know other than uh the Breakaway save off Marner and the um you know when tanov jumped him into the play in the the second period I I don’t know if you say there were that many difficult uh saves for vly huso those those are the only two that stand out so it’s um you know you like their control you like the fact they get traffic in front of the net uh I thought the power play was much better simply because Mitch Marner was in constant movement yeah you know like you know we always compare power plays to to what you see with u the eant Oilers and Conor McDavid makes it work because he’s not standing still waiting for a pass I mean he’s he’s in constant motion and obviously has the speed and skill to beat guys one-on-one but um yeah I think I think there was a lot to like about the game but uh yeah it’s just they haven’t found that balance yet um you know where they’re they’re able to finish in a more regular basis uh another two points for Mitch Marner he’s now got 40 in 30 Games he’s trending towards I think over 110 points like what’s his contract looking like I know probably is going to the numbers not going to change you know before the season started but what’s what’s it looking like now well I I mean there’s uh I I don’t think you can dispute he’s he’s one of the top what five players in the league and and you say that with a lot of respect when you start to to gather uh who you think would join him in that category um I know a lot is is going to be brought up I I think something might get done before July 1st um but you know what he could have 150 points everybody’s going to be saying wait and see you know let’s let’s wait yeah let’s wait to see what happens after the 100 Point Season um but and we’ve said all along I mean uh whether he walks or or if U he ended up moving him to get a draft pick between the end of the season and July 1st um you’re never going to get what you’re giving up uh you will never get back the kind of skilled player uh you’re going to lose so um I would say you know and and then I guess we got to figure in is the cap going to go up by how much yeah and and how much can you afford so um I think one of the um the things the Leafs have to their advantage is uh I don’t think there’s anywhere else Mitch marter wants to play uh that doesn’t mean that you’re going to get him at a huge discount but I I certainly think that plays into their favor well and I guess the ultimate question would be how close does he come to Austin Matthews money yeah there’s yeah there’s that internal cap and right um you know again you know you’re going to say what’s what’s Conor McDavid going to be worth uh what is funny though looking at the right before the salary cap came in which was after what the the 0405 yeah season I I believe the highest paid player in the league uh and correct me if I’m wrong I think it was Chris stronger at 11 million so to think sounds good 24 years later the top guys are making about 11 million so so you can say the camp certainly kept cost down for uh for salaries in the National Hockey League well and some people will say forget about the number it’s the percentage Yeah but uh yeah ask Juan stto about the percentage not the number just the going to want a box he’s going to want a box maybe more than one do the broadcast from there yeah that’s right yeah the the mar version of the Manning broadcast crazy um last one for me uh any uh concern now with you know some of these games got to be easy wins you know they they pulled the goalie and you had Matthews and Marner and all those guys are any concern now of them having fatigue going into tomorrows and would you judge tomorrow’s loss as them taking a step back uh well I mean Buffalo’s always been tough on them uh you know either either place I mean you go into Buffalo at uh you know Joe is is described it at times as The Little Shop of horse because there have been some disastrous nights in Buffalo uh the sabes for whatever reason give the Leafs a lot of trouble uh just like the Ottawa Senators it doesn’t matter where they are in the standings uh who’s missed the playoffs more U Buffalo’s a tough Team U on Toronto so I wouldn’t look at it as a step back but uh you you really would like to see those games where you know they win 5-1 or 62 and they just control it they’re sort of comfortable throughout the game and uh you know Jimmer you just rattled off you know the last five or six games yeah and um I I don’t think they scored more than three goals than any of them uh so even even the you know the wins and losses as Jimmer was saying seem to be about the same it’s it’s yeah one power play goal one way it’s one bad bounce the other seems to be the determining Factor but uh he would like to see them against the sabes uh be able to control it Buffalo played tonight as well so that takes away the excuse of the back-to-backs yeah Buffalo oddly enough lost 4-2 in Washington and an empty net goal by Tom Wilson decided it so there you go they have a similar similar story but Buffalo’s skiding badly they well I think that’s nine in a row isn’t it yeah and they they blew the lead to Detroit they chased phly whoo in the first period and uh uh ended up uh Red Wings came back back and want it in a shootout so Buffalo’s due for a win is what you’re saying oh yeah well so so yeah just like uh just like Billy whoo is do for one t night I I know when we were talking in the pregame I could hear feel your ears go up I thought well you know cuz he hasn’t won in a year and I went yeah he’s probably going to win tonight yeah Market correction game yep for sure Ralphie thanks very much appreciate it thanks boys okay Jim Ralph kind enough to hang around after the game four two Detroit wins over the lead and St just before we break I’m going to throw this at you the Leafs are now 5 six and two on the road um their power play is only hit for five goals on the road is there anything to that um they like their home cooking I know it’s just it seems like for for a team that’s that good yeah and it’s you know it’s up to us obviously to sort of dissect and analyze sort of some of the games and and the the the strengths and the weaknesses of the group but I think it was telling and hearing Craig Bru’s uh comments before the game and not really panicking or not really challenging or not really being you know negative on his thoughts of the power play he says there’s ups and downs of uh in an 82 Game season yes they want to be more consistent and the specialty teams I think um if they were a little bit more special especially on the power play I could see them having probably four five more points but I think it’s too talented of a group I believe those numbers are going to even out and you know based on their analytics crew and his comments he sees that happening uh before it’s all said and done this season see if you’ll agree with me on this because we did both games Anaheim and Detroit I I think the Leafs actually played better tonight than they did Thursday would you agree yeah they did they did and um you know I could say they played a solid you know 50 minutes but they had a couple breakdowns we saw the goal uh in the last minute of the second period and then a goal 40 seconds after ni uh scored to tie it up so um I think for them they just have to be able to keep their foot on the gas stay focused for a full 60 minutes and play the game the right way then um the one thing I can say is they have not been cheating the game they’ve they’ve usually you know stick to the basics they stick to the fundamentals um they they manage the clock really really well but you know in a long season you’re going to have one off so um we asked me before the game I said I was not a betting man but I would not touch this game because Detroit has the game Breakers and uh Patrick Kane had made some big big plays you saw him on the power play on the flank being a constant threat and uh Petri scored two goals you saw Raymond all over the ice cider was playing well as well so as you know bad as the team has been struggling with Detroit they have some guys that can make big plays and they did that tonight and that’s why they got the win one thing I will say about the Red Wings you know that young pairing of cider and Edinson against the best the Leafs could offer they played a lot of minutes tonight I’m just going to look them up um and and they held their own that they didn’t uh struggle that much cider played 2237 and where is Edinson he played uh just over 21 so they’re out they’re playing heavy minutes so kids yes and they know they’re big strong and you know they can make some plays and they play a heavy game and um I think for Toronto they could have done a better job maybe just getting in there and uh playing a little bit more physical on them right they’re still young uh and if you take sort of time and space and just make it difficult for them they’ll be more prone to make a little bit more turnovers but I’m not saying it was an easy night for them I just think Toronto could have made their night a little bit harder but they’re worldclass players and you know I heard some comparisons uh with Edinson and uh Hond so those are some big shoes to fill but to be saying that at a young age of 21 the future is Sprite for both of them on the back end for Detroit uh let’s hear some postgame sound before we break Mitch Marner and what the difference was tonight thought we created a lot offensively um they did a good job blocking a lot of shots we weren’t able to get a lot through um you know they uh they transitioned well on us and made some great plays and scored off it difficult to see a goal kind of taken away offside in certain terms of how how inch is yeah yeah I mean that’s uh that’s how the game goes sometimes so um you know we didn’t let it frustrate us as a line we uh we felt good about what we were doing tonight especially that first and then just carried it on so um we didn’t want to let it bring it down bring us down so we did a good job of not letting it bring us down um we just stuck with our with our game plan um you we had a lot of good looks we just weren’t able to capitalize take us how you saw Austin and for his there in that meet yeah um just saw you know kind of had time and tried to shrink the zone as much as I could tried the pump fake and [ __ ] enough got you guys bite on it and um saw Austin kind of flare out to the side there so uh I had had one timers on both sides I think the pass off was just a little easier than the one to Willie so lucky enough he was able to put it in and on the ni go I’m assuming your your shoot for the tip there yeah I mean him and him and tone do such a good job of getting around that net and and getting their stick open and free and um for me as a player up there I’m just trying to find a way to you know sift one in for those two to try to get a stick on it and I mean they’ve done a great job at it so um you know we practiced it quite a bit as well so it’s a great tip by n and you know they to tried to kind of like I said floated into him what makes maridos such a difficult opponent to go against um he brings some siid um obviously uses his body well um you know give him time and space he makes a great play good Outlets gets up the ice well um creates offense for their team and you know obviously helps him out defensively so um you know he’s came into his own what you make of how Joseph perform you guys going I thought he played great um a couple of those he really had no chance on so um you know it sucks when you see something like that go that way um especially when we make some big saves beforehand what’s the challenge you know 5:00 start tomorrow like less than 24 hours but as a player how do you how how do you deal with that back to Junior Hockey I guess I mean I don’t know just uh you know try to get as much recovery as you can here tonight uh with you know whatever you want to do however you want to do it um and then uh obviously try to get to sleep as quick as you can when we get home tonight you know kind of Do Your Own Thing throughout the day tomorrow and just ready for a game mitz partner after the 4-2 loss in Detroit this is Leaf’s game night on TSN 1050 the iHeart Radio App and the Leafs radio network lately times have been challenging with many people facing increased interest rates inflation and Rising credit card debt everyone the chat deals event is on now save big on holiday gifting Essentials like a cheers insiders thank you for hanging out with us tonight I got a great special friend of the show David Kaplan of the recap we’re going to send you guys over to his show that just wrapped up Dave say hi to hello everybody how are you by the way the Cubs with like Vladimir Guerrero dropped off here in Chicago how did I know you were going to say that pleasure man Le game night Detroit four Toronto 2 the final score in Detroit tonight Jim taddy and Anthony Stewart with you Austin Matthews on the power play his 10th goal of the season and in postgame here he sort of assesses his team’s performance I me I thought you know it’s a good effort for the N partk tonight L little breakdowns that uh just can’t really happen um you know on our side that they capitalized on and um you maybe not enough uh I feel like we had the puckle up T but maybe not enough um know stuff towards their that um so you know they blocked a lot of shots they got Lanes um but I mean I think we just got to do a better job of getting getting more pucks than that um you know the gos that we did score tonight I mean the second one obviously uh you know just getting guys in that tips um I thought we could have done a better job of that did you have any sense that you were offside on Mitch’s goal that got called back and real no what do you make of Mitch play there and what does it do for the confidence on the power play for you to get one but also for that that unit to get on yeah I mean it was a great play um you know I thought the first time around we weren’t you know very detailed and I thought the second time around I thought we had better looks um better execution obviously made a great play um hanging on with the puck I think um you know the PE K just kind of collaps inwards and I trying to find a spot for him to get me to Puck and and uh he did what goes through your mind when the blade comes out of your foot and you’re kind of creaming there towards the boards like what you it’s it’s never happened to me but obviously I mean you see it every once in a while and um yeah I don’t know it’s it’s definitely interesting I was a little bit mixed up um you know luckily K was there to get me back to the bench but um definitely uh definitely not something that I don’t think’s happened to me before but um yeah it is what it is just I don’t know three place did you know it was your blade that that was gone I knew it was my Blade the second uh he passed it off my skate cuz when I went to plan I mean I felt the come out then I went to plan I fell and went ring to the boards um so I knew I knew the blade came out um I just didn’t know what to do after that so um yeah good learning experience probably mirle like what is it like watching thing mean you talk L about the patterns that occur in the game and imagine that was yeah I was just trying to get open and like I said I mean the the PK kind of collapsed inwards and he had a lot of time um you know rolling up there in the slot so I just try to find an opening for him cuz he’s uh a guy that can get you the puck in in those areas Austin Matthews Le Captain postgame of so 4-2 Detroit wins stew I mean we’re talking about slim margins here aren’t we yeah and you hear the comments from Matthews and Marner is almost if there was no Panic in their voice echoing sort of the sentiments of the power play that Peru was talking about uh in the pregame there’s just no real Panic it’s it’s almost as if hey you know what it was an off uh night um uh results wise but not process right they said yes they’d like to get a couple more shots on net but I thought they did a good job um you know shooting the puck and you saw in the nce goal uh it’s not just n on the net front it’s Matthews adopting that mentality and getting to the front of the net he’s right on top of iluso as well so um just in their voice it’s it’s not uh it was pretty light they’re asking them about the blade they’re asking about hey the offsides so they’re thinking in their mind yeah you know what we’re going to stick and continue with the process and some nights you’re just going to be off or be short an inch short uh but they’re going to continue to win more games than not if think if they play this exact same way yeah you know that’s sticking to the process I think it’s really important for everybody to understand because look you’re going to play good playoff games and you’re not going to win them all so I mean you don’t go back to the drawing board and redo everything you realize that like tonight or or like some of the other losses we’ve talked about it just didn’t work out now there’s little things that that happen that that can’t be duplicated on a night basis like like bounces and and line changes and and things like that so that’s why it’s important to stick to the process isn’t it yes talking about that process right and you know I’ve been doing a lot of studying I am coaching as well too there’s mistakes and everyone’s going to make mistakes and there’s choices right and I think Toronto they made a lot of good choices and a lot of those goals didn’t necess what’s up basketball fans thanks for hanging out with us tonight for the Raptors against the Chicago Bulls tonight we have a special transition at at the end of this game we’re going to send everybody from this game over to David kaplan’s the recap Channel where he does all Chicago Sports covers everything the Bears the Bulls the Blackhawks the Cubs the white socks you name it Chicago Sports kaplan’s got it covered so we’re going to send you over to the Recaps lunch hour with Guff show that ran today thank you from going over there and hitting that like button hit that subscribe button over there as well and let’s help the Chicago fans out now you got a place to watch some more Sports thank you for checking it out David kaplan’s the recap take that we’ll see you guys back in the chat go Raptors Go Games yeah and when you look at the box score two things jump off the page The Cider goal late in the second period and the Petri goal the second one 44 seconds after the Leaf’s tied um so the only thing you can do when you’re on the team in that situation is is maybe guard a little more be a little more careful after because of the game situation and that’s all I could say about that it’s really not any analysis it’s just a sort of a game awareness isn’t it yes manage the clock manage the clock and you know I think it’s a completely different story you know before that cider goal Toronto had probably three4 opportunities to score in the four minutes before that right so you know they score there it’s a totally different game going into the third period and uh you know you saw Matthew ny’s goal and coaches harp on that I remember now I remember the importance as a player but but now they say the most important shift is the shift right after a goal is scored four against uh cuz if you do score you want to keep that momentum and you got to go out and sort of Take the Wheel away from an opponent but they score 30 40 seconds later the shift right after that just kills that momentum that it took you so long uh to build so um so if if I’m doing the video session which you’re probably not going to do tomorrow it’s just the the messaging for tomorrow manage the game manage the puck tomorrow and manage making good decisions do make good Cho es it’s going to be your second game in less than 24 hours you’re going to be tired you’re going to be fatigued manage the clock manage the puck and have Buffalo beat themselves because they’ve done that the last uh the whole entire season Buffalo’s a team that if you just stick to the system they’re going to implode so we’ll see how that goes but uh um positive a lot more positive than negatives tonight for Toronto so uh just manage those things and you’ll have a better results uh more often than not tonight’s coach’s comment is powered by your Ontario Honda dealers score $1,500 Honda bonus in the crvlx conditions apply visit Honda ontario.ca his assessment of the game tonight made U two mistakes on two goals that were we don’t need to make them that’s you know uh got to be better on a couple of those plays you know I thought we competed hard you know had a lot of good things going on in the game got to finish better you know we can’t can’t come out of the game 24 Shots on net only like whether it’s missing that blocked you know whatever the case got to find a way to get those onto the net more um yeah defensively we could have been better tonight yeah on the defensive mistakes do you address that with the the players right away or you just assume they know well no we went we go over it um go over between periods too um that’s a good Rush team and they scored two goals off the rush tonight got to be better is that part of the message in that secondary Mission when the goal that gives them the lead is scor yeah and that’s just a situational play for me with a minute 28 left in the period and um you know we can’t give up a goal there that’s can’t do it can’t do it sorry that’s you know we got to be better that the way that ni going full I wonder is that kind of the recipe for baby Wars well you know and I with the goalie out I mean you know we have a clear Lane and before we took the time out and I just you know we have numbers at the net we don’t shoot the puck there and you know it’s it’s little things but um right now like we got to fix them you know we got to fix them is good a lift for the team to see Matthew good on the board and power play yeah no I thought the power play looked good and it was good to see him score one um you know and the other thing is like we take two penalties in the third period it’s stuff where’ you make Joseph walls game he was good he mean some he made a couple of them saves you know where I mean there’s nothing he can do on them you know he made a couple and then they get another whack at it so you know those are the mistakes I’m talking about just he was solid give us a chance to win can you try and rest a couple of guys that you have on well we got numbers here so uh we’re going to look at the lineup for tomorrow and we’ll make a couple decisions yeah what do you what do you do what do you do when there’s such a quick turn around do you start looking at Buffalo on the plane ride back or do you just go over this one still like how how do you manage your time I’m you know for me I focus on our team a lot um you know I look at the tape look at the chanes just look at situation stuff um you know Buffalo that’s all being taken care of too but uh I’m going to focus on our team coach Buu after the 4-2 loss in Detroit so um Anthony I want to go back over the U the Finish better I mean how do they do that how do when you look at these scores they’re they’re barely scoring three goals and a lot of times it’s two and two wasn’t enough so how do they fix that yeah and I I think not saying it was a shot at but maybe it’s a messaging towards you know some of the bottom six right and uh again you can’t really fault um McMahon he’s coming off an injury too but I saw DOI there I saw Holberg with two three opportunities as well der had a couple chances too so I think it’s an opportunity for some of those guys uh in bottom six to really score a goal and you know again I watch a lot of the games on social media too and reading some of the comments and they were saying this is the perfect time for someone in the bottom six to step up and have a goal and that’s what happens because a lot of teams they uh do a lot of research and they watch a lot of video on how to shut down the marners and the Kneeland Landers and it’s very very tough but you know they did a good job of of keeping them to the outside so uh you got to put more Pucks in I’m not sure if you realize Detroit was just firing everything they would get the puck to the point Quick Step fire it on net maybe it’s going to hit a leg hit something and you saw in the Petri goal just traffic right they had some big big bodies and in rasmuson getting to the front of the net and so I think for them it’s just that mentality and having that uh become a part of their ilk and how to score goals tremendously talented you you know you can see Marner he has the ability to thread the needle and draw two three guys in coverage and find the open guy but come playoff time you just got to get those nce type goals shot tips the patet going to the net uh and I think that’s something where the bottom six can thrive in scoring those types of goals so uh in and around the Nets and I remember and I always used to say the fourth line guys you know why they would always typically score on a breakaway in an NHL game because they’ve been waiting 26 games to get it and they’re fin it’s not coming till next year so you got to make sure you’re burying so uh those middle six and bottle six guys they got to find a way to to you know get these uh Leaf teams into games and over the top and uh if if they potted one in I could see them probably winning tonight well and that’s at secondary scoring so Detroit got three goals from defensemen they’re they’re they’re secondary scoring yeah yeah yeah and I and I use the term tertiary because you know the Big Fork and you know they provide the primary and secondary but you know it’s you know the the mintons and he’s been great right that’s a lot of pressure on him to step into a third line role but you know I’m looking at guys like DOI should have five six by now we know uh McMahon if he wasn’t hurt he’d probably you know good for another you know six seven goals to be at 13 on 10 or 11 12 13 on the year as well derer needs to add uh some uh lorence as well too you know Nick Robertson if he gets back into the lineup so those are guys that are counted uh to add some of that offense and Detroit’s struggling because they mentioned in the pregame they lost 75 goals you can’t just rely on four guys they’re not going to score 250 goals and you need other guys stepping up and and I can see that happening or or being stressed and emphasized uh you know as we get into the new year Leafs lose 42 in Detroit this is Leafs game night on TSN Detroit Jim Tad and Anthony Stewart with you nice ties the game on a nice deflection from Marner at 107 of the third period and you’re thinking hm maybe but you know 44 seconds later Petri gets his second of the game and it’s 3-2 Detroit and and it tips from there slightly the leaf just couldn’t even it after that here’s nice postgame on his team’s game tonight you know I think I think we got a lot of ozone time but I think we just didn’t get enough shots on net um didn’t create a lot of loose bucks Around the Net and kind of made his job easy um I think that was the difference there what’ you see on your goal yeah I think we we ran a good Faceoff play and Mitch you got in the middle and um he was looking for sticks on that shot and um just kind of you know got to get loose and and uh free up myself so I can tip that Puck and you know unfortunately went in that first go did you know think at the time you might have been offside when you were carrying the puck in and in the one that was taking away back no we we we honestly had no idea I we weren’t thinking about it at all so is that kind of the the mindset of the approach that could be critical for this team like J how that goal came about about getting points on top and through traffic yeah I mean you know we got some good D and we just want to get the pucks through and um the more we can create Havoc around the net the better you know I think uh you know we can dominate uh you know teams below the goal line and and Around the Net so um yeah the more we can get it there the better goes through your mind when you see lost and lose a blade there at at speed no less yeah I think we just had to control the puck you know it’s uh it’s tough when he’s down the ice and um I’m not sure who it was but we made a great play by by pushing him down to the bench and um yeah it was uh it’s kind of unfortunate and you know it’s uh it’s weird it was weird is that has that ever happened to you it has not unfortunately knock on what it hasn’t so what you make of how Joseph performed for you guys really good you know he made the stops that he need needed to and um I think we need to do a better job in front of them and um I think we took too much penalties and you know kind of gave up you know a lot of scam plays and you know a lot of a lot of um you know good scoring chances that uh make it difficult for him so we just had to be better in front of them what do you do to prepare like puck drops at at 5:00 p.m. like less than 24 hours between games here yeah I mean uh ice bath protein shake and get right back after it uh Matthew and I’s after the game uh assessing things and like everybody else they spent just as much time talking about the game tomorrow um Stu you know I think if you allow yourself to be frustrated uh last Saturday they go into Pittsburgh against a horrendous defensive record and and don’t exploit it and tonight against a just a just an awful penalty kill they’re one for two but but they didn’t really draw any penalties did they they didn’t exploit that what what’s your take on that yeah I think they could do a better job of of drawing some penalties too and again that just comes with playing a little bit heavier game and all that but um I think for them it’s just process oriented a lot more POS positives uh than negatives with this group and uh you know going into tomorrow they’re going against a you know helpless Buffalo Sabers te who lost again tonight 4-2 to the Washington Capitals so they’re now nine losses in a row and Washington was two for three on the power play and just looking at some of the stats there Owen power played 28 minutes a night uh and I believe Bowen Byrum 26 and a half minutes so those guys are going to need a double ice nap let alone a bat they’re going to have to take a nap in there and sleep the whole entire time cuz they’re going to be tired so I think tomorrow they got to come out and really have a good first period and I’m saying 15 20 shots in that first period to really Hammer home saying hey this was a one-off uh versus the uh you know versus Detroit tonight but again you go back and you know the pendulum swings both ways they had no business being in that New Jersey game they got two points out of them uh last week too so maybe that’s a little bit of hockey Karma uh coming back to bite them but uh no no Panic in everyone’s voices like even the media they’re asking some softball questions asking about blades falling out and you know sound like someone was mowing the lawn there it was tough to uh to hear in the with the audio there but uh uh again it there’s no Panic uh there’s no finger pointing there’s no blaming uh you know wall was quoted as they were telling kall that he played a good game as well too so it’s just you know hey less than 24 hours Let’s Get Back in the Saddle here and try to get two points against the Sabers who are ripe for the taking it just didn’t work out tonight that’s the bottom line Stu thanks very much always great working with the tap man TM yes well said this is Leafs game night on TSN 1050 in the Leafs radio network you’ve been listening to NHL play byplay on SiriusXM head over to SiriusXM NHL Network radio SiriusXM 91 for the best hockey [Music] talk had this they could be made fun of on social media they don’t even know it and they’re walking out of a classroom and people are laughing so it’s a different world all live in because we’re all criticized and compared to more and faster and with that you need to balance that with support and I think you know lots of coaches that have gone that I watch around the league in the NHL there’s a lot of great coaches and a lot of lot of good young coaches that are really good at that you know the X’s and O’s I say to people are easy now you know when the when the X’s and O’s are very simple part of hockey it’s connecting with people and getting people motivated and excited and that’s changed dramatically X’s and O’s became big when when video hit the computer you could watch a hundred or a thousand for checks over and over and over and say okay these are the key components on a for check and so you know you didn’t have to be in the NHL to become better at that so that’s the easy part I can’t I just can’t imagine doing this or or that I did it I called Brian Matthews one time and Austin’s you 17 year and and I said Brian I said do you have any idea how good your son is and his reply was no like what are you talking about why why are you what is this conversation and I and I had to explain to him and I said I think this is what’s going to happen Austin I said you you you honestly have to prepare for your life to become very chaotic and crazy and lo and behold he gets drafted in Toronto instead of you know some some different market and and we know how crazy it can be here oh yeah but and then the last thing I’ll say on it is is I remember leading up to the draft lots of people said can he handle Toronto and I thought absolutely no no problem and the biggest thing for me is when a when a young player comes into league and we talked about earlier if they’re minus two or three and they have a really tough night you get to know how they’re going to respond and some that breaks their confidence in and maybe they need a s in the AHL you got to get them out of the pressure but Austin was so good that if that happened and when it’s happened in his career it doesn’t hurt his confidence he knows that he’s in that category of player that I know I can redeem myself the next just get me to the next game now and they can do the best players can do that and and that’s a different Echelon of player at the NHL level that can do that so if you look at the top top players in the NHL their confidence is not going to break the guys right under that there’re you know they have a bad night they may not want that next game on the court and off your home for the Hockey Hall of Famer Mark Messier joined Scott Lain on SiriusXM NHL Network radio channel 91 to share what it was like to play in the 1994 finals with the New York Rangers as well as ending the 54e drought for the franchise and how that team represented what a hockey team is all about well look I’d be remissive didn’t ask you about 1994 as well you mentioned Mike Keenan we spoke with him in studio a couple of weeks ago he still speaks so highly of you and of that run so take us back to ending the 54-year drought in game seven you get a power play goal you shovel a puck underneath of Kirk mlan stands up as the gamewinner as it turns out so take us back to that hot steamy night what was it June 14th of 1994 at the Gard of New York just you know I I guess just starting going to the rink um trying to keep your same routine Brian leech and I would always drive together down through Time Square down Broadway 7th Avenue to take a right-hand turn on 33rd Street and uh it you could feel things were different even from the Upper West Side Just A vibe and the whole the energy of the whole city was just electrified getting down towards Madison Square Garden seeing the crowd already starting to build the police officers surrounding the garden it was a carnival likee atmosphere obviously we knew we were something on the cusp of doing something that hadn’t been done in 54 years the magnitude of it was palpable I mean the energy the just everything just seemed to be so electrified um you try to keep yourself in the moment um you know you try to stay with your routine obviously there’s a bun more at stake um and then you know we found ourselves much like we did in ‘ 87 up 3-1 in the series losing to fifth game where it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that we’re gonna New York Rangers were finally going to win a Stanley Cup after 54 years only to find ourselves that the party atmosphere got a little bit delayed and then had to go back to Vancouver which again we got troun in Vancouver like just like we did in ‘ 87 and now we’re coming home for game seven and and uh the same thing happened um you know it just you know we felt good about our chances uh we felt we were a better team than Vancouver we felt that we should have wrapped up the SE series earlier against Vancouver but that’s the greatest thing about sports you can think all you want but the reality is there’s they got a heartbeat over there too they got Pride over there too they’re there for a reason because they’re a great team and here we are in game seven and happen to go out and execute a great game plan to beat a very hungry very young very physical hard team to play against in Vancouver and and luckily for us we had a lot of experience we had a dynamic incredible amount of Talent with Brian leech and Sergey zubov U you know Alex kovalev Adam Graves and Mike RoR and net and then sprinkled in with some veterans some Harden veterans with mavich and tienan and and Steve ler and Nunan and matau and Jeff baboom and Jay Wells and all the amazing players that uh they banded together that year to to create maybe not the most skilled team that’s ever won a Stanley Cup but if you look up the word team they could put the 1994 Ranger team right there and and uh that that that year that team epitomizes what a team is all about follow every second of the action on NHL Network stopped by SiriusXM NHL Network radios the morning skate with Scott Lin to discuss what game seven means to him and what it’s like to also lose a game seven well when you think about the two greatest words in sports you think about game seven for many reasons um obviously to get to a game seven um both teams obviously very evenly matched from the literal sense uh the game seven um you know you don’t have to be a sport fan to understand that something’s big at stake and that uh you will go watch it even if you don’t know the teams you don’t know the players you know the backdrop because it’s the greatest form of reality TV in the world because there is going to be a winner and a loser uh the lot at stake obviously but uh for me personally it’s the it’s a lifetime Journey to acquire the skill set that’s required to be able to perform when the stakes are the highest under the most scrutinized pressure um when you’re expected to perform and you think about a game seven moment or game seven that’s when you have to perform uh there’s it’s a it’s a winner or go home situation and uh what are the skill sets uh that are required to do that obviously we’ve practiced our game and honed our skill set for years and years and year tens of thousands of hours of of uh honing our skills but emotionally mentally um what prepares you to play in those moments and perform when you’re expected to um that I think is what really defines a game seven moment for the players that have excelled in in in game seven moments and what are those life lessons that we can teach our young boys and girls and the skill threats required to do that uh the breathing it’s being able to slow your heart down and your blood pressure goes up and your decision- making is rash and concentration varies because of all of it uh what allows you to kind of really slow down and use your god-given talent and then obviously the repetitions through your whole life that you know you can do it uh you just got to be able to do it when when it matters most it’s like getting a home run and you know like Aaron Boon did or doing something special at the right moments um and I think we can the educational part of the docu series is really fascinating to me there to help our young boys and girls who who uh will be faced with big decisions in their life and you don’t have to be a sport fan to have a game s a moment in life uh everybody’s faced with decisions that they’re going to alter the trajectory of their lives in one way or another there and we’re trying to figure out what those skill sets are what does it feel like to lose a game seven fortunately for me I I never experienced what the Oilers did last year of going all the way to the end in a championship game and losing in a game seven any game anytime you get to a game seven um it’s a hard journey to get there two teams evenly matched it’s been a war
