know today’s video is all about NHL playoff predictions we’re taking a look at the standings as of the holiday break looking at how the matchups would break down I’ll give you my thoughts and predictions on who would be winning the Stanley Cup as of today we’ll do that coming up next so welcome back to another video here at Top Shelf hockey as I mentioned today we’re doing an NHL playoff prediction video so we’re taking a look at the current standings as of the holiday break and we’re going to a look at how the matchups would be uh would be be played out if the playoffs started today and then I’m going to give you my thoughts and predictions and how these would go and Lead here to who I think would be the favorite as of right now to win the Stanley Cup so let’s get started first with our Eastern Conference standings we’ll take a look here first up we’ve got an the Atlantic division uh right now five teams scheduled to make a playoff appearance uh which is actually the way I had things predicted at the beginning of the year and it’s actually the five teams in there that I had the teams in the Metro are slightly different than what I had originally predicted but right now in the Atlantic we’ve got the Flor Panthers and first place with 46 points and a 639 win percentage the maple LEF sit second with 44 points and a 629 win percentage the lightning I put them in third if you look at the nhl.com standings they currently show the Bruins in third because they technically have more points but they have a way lower win percentage and have three games in hand so the lightning I technically are in thir third based on win percentage 40 points 625 the Bruins are 42 points and a 583 which would be currently based on win percentage would be wild card 1 and the Ottawa Senators are 38 points 559 win percentage which currently would sit them in Wild Card 2 so in the Metro division we have the New Jersey Devils of 49 points uh the Washington Capitals of 48 points but they have a better win percentage so technically we’re for this video and the purposes of it that we’re going to put the Capitals in first place since their win percentage is much higher they have several games in hand on the devil so 706 win percentage for Washington that puts the devils in second place uh with a 662 win percentage and the Carolina Hurricanes with 43 points and a 632 win percentage so right now um the penguins are knocking on the door they’re not far behind the P the Ottawa Senators for the last playoff spot Ottawa I do believe has a game in hand uh the team like the Rangers however are like Five Points back um and of course you know other teams like the Islanders and the Flyers they’re still kind of in the mix the Blue Jackets to some degree but I think for the most part um I really think the standings are going to be pretty much the way they are I think there could be a little bit of jockeying for position within those eight teams but like I said in the beginning of the year I had five teams making it from the Atlantic um I don’t know the I don’t think I have these in the exact order um but Florida Toronto Tampa Boston and Ottawa are the five teams I had predicted going in in the Metro I had the Devils hurricanes and the Rangers I didn’t think the Rangers would completely fall apart like they have and I did not think the capitals would be so dominant like they’ve had so they’ve for me have been the two biggest surprise teams both for the good and for the bad so in the Eastern Conference that would set up around one playoff matchups of the Washington Capitals being the first seed so they play wildcard 2 which is the Ottawa senator uh we have the Florida Panthers uh division leaders in the Atlantic would play wild card number one uh they would be the two seed so Florida versus Boston again that would leave us with Toronto versus Tampa and the two3 seed and the Devils against the hurricanes in that two3 seed uh so that’s some interesting matchups now um amongst the four um teams or four series I do see one upset and if they play the way they they have been lately I honestly think the Ottawa Senators would upset the Washington Capitals I’m not entirely convinced that Washington can playoff time will be as good as what we’ve seen here in a regular season uh I do think that you know if there’s a little bit of a if there’s one team that I think are most at risk to not follow through with playoff success that’s having a really good regular season I’m still not sold on the capitals and I think they would be the team so I would predict for their Auto to win a first round series against the capitals I also have the Florida Panthers beating the Boston Bruins uh in a round one series I don’t think the Bruins are really built for long-term playoff success right now I think the Panthers would beat them fairly fairly easy to be honest uh the defending C the Cup champions will definitely make another run here uh and at least go um you know through a few rounds here for sure Toronto versus Tampa I do think that the map Lees could beat the lightning it might be a preferable match up obviously we know the leaps beat the lightning in the playoffs two years back I think they’d be a better match than a team like Boston um obviously you know the one team Toronto wants to avoid here is the Panthers um so obviously playing the lightning I do think the Leafs would win that series you’d have New Jersey versus Carolina and as much as Carolina is looking for that you know that success I think New Jersey just might be the team to beat right now in the Eastern Conference so I have the devils and there their strong goal tending strong decor and strong forward group beating Carolina so that would mean Ottawa Florida Toronto and New Jersey would all Advance would set up round two of the Florida Panthers against the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New Jersey Devils against the Ottawa Senators now Florida versus Toronto I think would be very interesting I I don’t think though that the Leafs are quite built to beat the Panthers that’s uh going to be a tough challenge for them clearly you know the Panthers are a team that can score they can defend and they can beat the snot out you and I don’t know like the Leafs are probably going to be better than they have been in years P I think they put up a better fight I don’t know that they would get past the Panthers though I really think the Florida Panthers are still probably one of the best teams going here and the deepest teams with the most um you combination of skill and meanness um and just playoff battle test it um so to me I’m Florida to beat the Leafs I do think the Leafs can make it to at least round two uh the New Jersey Devils against the Ottawa Senators would be an interesting matchup as well I know ideally it would be great to see a battle of Ontario in a playoff series I think that would be great for both uh fan bases however you know especially Ottawa to be in the playoffs for the first time in seven years and face their uh biggest rival in Toronto would be a lot of fun I just don’t see it playing out the way things are today obviously if we see a little bit of change in the standings Maybe it happens as a round one matchup but right now with these matchups I don’t see it being preferable or favorable for round two I think the Devils would be a team that might be too tough for the SS to beat right now uh obviously getting into the playoffs and experiencing a little bit of success would be a huge win for them and something that they could certainly build off of but for right now I would say you’d have an Eastern Conference Final of the Panthers against the Devils I think that would be a very tight long hardfought series uh I think in Florida’s case to make it this far again after consecutive years in the final I’m picking New Jersey to win I just don’t know that Florida can go to a staning cup final a third time in a row like at what point is this team going to run out of gas that’s my concern with them I think they can start the playoff strong round two is going to be more of a challenge by the time we get to round three that’s what I’m thinking it might be a a team that’s more susceptible to being beat plus I think the devils are a really good team as well I think they’ve got all the tools to possibly be the team to beat in the Eastern Conference this year so I am predicting right now at least and this could change but right now I’m saying the Devils come out of the Eastern Conference now looking at the western conference let’s take a look at the Central Division we’ve got Winnipeg Minnesota and Colorado in the top three the Jets with 51 points and the 708 win percentage Minnesota with 46 points and a 657 win percentage the Avalanche with 42 points and a 583 of course in the Pacific we’ve got the Vegas golden knights with 49 points and a 721 win percentage the Oilers 44 points and a 647 win percentage and the Los Angeles Kings with 43 points and a 632 that would leave us with the top two wild card teams being the Dallas Stars who are technically one point behind Vancouver but do have a better win percentage so that would put Dallas’s wild card one with a 606 win percentage and wild guard 2 would be the canox at 41 points in a 603 win percentage so let’s sets up your first round matchups being Vegas being top seed with a 721 win percentage would play the Vancouver Canucks the Edington Oilers and the Los Angeles Kings would play for the fourth year in a row the Winnipeg Jets would do battle the Dallas Stars and the Minnesota Wild would play the colado avalanche now in Vegas and Vancouver uh Vancouver connects right now are definitely team that’s tough to predict going too far with all the drama they’re dealing with uh combined in the fact that Vegas is also a really really good team I think Vegas comes out on top I don’t know that Vancouver can overcome the struggles that they’ve been dealing with internally with all the drama I think it could be a major distraction if things are not settled and put to bed quickly it could be a Lost season for Vancouver but for right now Vegas is also you know clipping on a high rate they have got great goal tending arguably the best Blue Line in the l and a large you know very talented group of forwards as well so Vegas to me beats Vancouver Edmonton beats la for the fourth year in a row uh La is having a really good regular season but again won’t be any match for Edington uh the last three years not only has Evon won but they’ve done it in an easier fashion each time could it be a sweep this year that would be the only way to make it better for the fourth straight year I have Winnipeg over Dallas Dallas will be a great team I have concerns over some of their players and their health um but technically you know after last year’s early playoff exit I think the Jets are going to be more motivated than ever to have a longer playoff run and will’ll take out no matter who they play in the first round I think they’re going to be ready to go and will be a force to be Reon with so Dallas it’s an unfortunate matchup for them and then the Avalanche Against the Wild right now the wild are not the same team that they were early on uh they’ve had their struggles lately and I think by the end of the year the Avalanche are going to continue to get better all that speed and skill coming at you I don’t know that they can defend that and I think the Avalanche would take that Series without going too too deep so that makes Vancouver La Dallas and Minnesota eliminated that makes Vegas Edmonton Winnipeg and Colorado moving on to round number two that would set up a round two series being the Vegas golden kns against the Edmonton Oilers and the Winnipeg Jets against the Colorado Avalanche now Vegas versus Evington is going to be a tough series to be honest I really think Evington is on a mission this year uh I do think they’re going to be capable of winning the Western Conference I do think that they’re going to be capable of annihilating teams on a high offensive strike uh so in all honesty they’ve shown at times last year they can be good defensively on the PK and get good goal tending as long as that holds up I think they’ll get by then Winnipeg versus Colorado Winnipeg will be looking for some playoff um you know Revenge if you will from last year except last year they met in round one obviously they’re going to be coming back working harder than ever to take up those Avalanche so in all honesty they have the team they have the goal ending and they can get it done so I’m predicting Winnipeg over Colorado so that sets up an all Canadian Western final of Edon against the Jets and I do think that’s where the Jets run ends I think Evon will make it back to the Stanley Cup Final I just think that as good as Conor halach is is the Oilers are going to be just too difficult to stop so I think we’re going to have a Stanley Cup Final of New Jersey versus Edmonton right now and the Edington Oilers are my prediction for the Stanley Cup champions I honestly think the Devils will be uh a team that can benefit and learn from their experience here but clearly the Oilers made it last year they were within you know uh one game of winning the Stanley Cup and I think they’re going to get the job done as this year’s playoffs gets underway they’re going to be an absolute Juggernaut in my opinion so just like the preseason my prediction for the Stanley Cup has not changed I’m still picking Edmonton to win at all uh obviously the Canadian teams for um are fairing well here with my predictions we’ve got uh you know obviously Boston Boston obviously Toronto and Ottawa in the Eastern Conference we’ve got Edmonton and Winnipeg and Vancouver in the Western Conference I do think the Flames are going to fall short uh obviously you know a team like Montreal not expected to be in the playoffs right now either so getting you know five teams in the playoffs for the seven Canadian teams is impressive and obviously with uh you know two of them going uh into the later rounds and all in at least uh you know three out of five winning at least around here is U you know kind of an impressive thing so that’s great news for for Canada in that aspect of things
