well K State loses in as it was in many ways a comedy of errors very frustrating and as Iowa State celebrates into the nights K State picks up the pieces we’ll dissect where some changes may need to be made coming up next thanks for listening to KC Sports Network proudly presented by Emprise Bank if you’re thinking about starting a business or know someone who is check out Emprise bank’s SBA Loans it’s always good to know your options and they can be your partner imposs possible all right welcome in live post game John Curts Cole manbeck with you K State Falls 2921 in Ames um incredibly frustrating night there were plenty of missed opportunities defense probably played well enough to win but certainly not the offense or the Special Teams and uh it was just sort of Co the same story we’ve seen a lot of this season when K State has run into problems it has been uh in large part about just mistakes being sloppy not looking particularly well coached and not looking particularly physical I don’t I guess we can I saw some discourse on social media about whether or not it was an effort issue I I guess instead of challenging the effort I would more so just challenge the fact that Iowa state was a much tougher team and uh took advantage of the fact that K State had two turnovers uh one of them coming on the first play of the game even if it was a 50-50 call that did look like it was a ball moving forward on the pitch either way bad play Bad turnover you have a Keegan Johnson turnover as well Roco Beck tries to throw you about four different interceptions you don’t pick off a single one of those you’ve got the Avery Johnson safety where somebody comes in unblocked and Avery kind of compounds the issue uh by running into the end zone before trying to throw it out of there um and then your special teams man continue to just melt down you get a field goal blocked that came after a horrendous series of play calling in the uh in the Red Zone the point when you should have scored so um that’s really where I think you have to start like this game was very much there for the taking Roco Beck completed about 30% of his passes um so the defense did enough to win but uh too much vomiting all over yourself which we we’ve seen multiple times this year well it’s not really what you expect from a Chris climbing program uh they beat themselves and most of their losses this year you think about the Arizona State game multiple turnovers um that Arizona State capitalized you think about the BYU game and where that game turned was multiple turnovers that Kate made self-inflicted mistakes that this program this team has made all season and all of their losses I I believe they’ve lost every game where they lose the turnover battle like they don’t seem to they don’t seem to overcome johon adversity Well when things fly in the face and there’s adversity they don’t seem to manage it well and um first play of the game obviously massive mistake now it it looked like it was probably a forward pass but still well dialed up play that it should work and it’s a first play right out of the gate and you have an execution error there and and things go south now you come back and you eventually tie it up at seven um but just just too many mistakes I mean they they just contined to shoot themselves in the foot this season and as a result they lost three of their last four games uh you look at the Houston game where did things go wrong it was interception inside their own 15 yard line uh this team very easily could be you know 10- two 11 and one but uh they they made too many mistakes this year and as a result they’re eight and four and I’ll be honest eight and four and we can get into this later eight and four is a disappoint to me uh I don’t I don’t think that is an acceptable season for the talent that is potentially on this team and so I think Chris kimman and his staff needs to look in the mirror and figure some things out could also pretty easily be six and six you know if like two lane in in Kansas Go a different way which they very easily could have and that’s part of the the point and the frustration I think with this team this year is that yeah they they have not been good enough in basically all facets at at points this year man there are frustrations and and Bones to pick all across the board I think 8 and four probably is a pretty fair synopsis of where they’re at but the the frustrating thing Cole is that tonight like overall you were held up against the prism of what Matt Campbell’s Iowa State team and program is right now and let’s just be honest man I mean they are the more physical tough team in program um I guess maybe program is overstating it a bit I don’t know certainly this year uh they are the tougher team and this is now four the last five that they have won against you so you know we had that discussion on the the pregame show where you guys were giving me a little bit of push back there I mean now it’s four or five this was a program that two years ago was just left for dead and Matt Campbell has resurrected that and while Avery Johnson I think is wildly talented and Roco Beck did not have a particularly good day again toughness like he was he’s the tougher quarterback and their whole team seems to kind of feed off of that and uh just a couple thing even even the K State Defense which played well got really bully balled there at the end of the game they just ran it right down the field now they wind up missing a field goal but like it just it looked like Iowa state was the team that had more more grit better special teams like all these things that we used to think of were Hallmarks of the K State program kind of like a bill SNES thing that Matt Campbell has going on right now and uh they just did that more than K State did for sure yeah I mean look the the the frustration for me comes down to the fact that like you know we put a lot of criticism on Conor Riley and the offensive play calling this season and I think that’s certainly fair and I I I continue to have a lot of qualms with the way things were called tonight but where I I start to have even more frustration John is like this ultimately comes back to Chris kimman because look at the Special Teams I mean they’re a complete disaster and Chris kimman has repeatedly BR bragged about hiring an NFL special teams coach and Nate katzer and what do we have tonight a 21 yard damn field goal get blocked on an untouched guy coming up the middle which first of all kind of an inexplicable decision to even kick the field goal in itself and also inexplicable that you’re running a short side option for multiple times during the night in a situation when you’re inside the five yard line first and goal and Conor Riley has some baffling play calls aside from the fact once again your special teams are a complete debacle and how many times they didn’t catch fair catch a punt couple times s early in the game poor field position they ran into a kicker where they’re lucky that that wasn’t called as well they did run into a kicker where there was a personal foul called um on an extra point they ran into a punter as well and so Chris kimman the last couple of years special teams have been a disaster under his watch and he hired Conor riy then as the offensive coordinator and like we’re seeing just so many just infuriating mistakes and frustrating play calls and again like there were some really good play calls tonight as well but um you know Chris kman has to make some changes when it comes to this football staff there’s been too much continuity probably um and they they need to they need to shake things up at this point because uh a really frustrating night really a frustrating November to this football season and yeah I mean Iowa state was tougher you could say they didn’t shoot themselves in the foot but what I would argue is that K State just didn’t capitalized when Iowa State tried to shoot themselves in the foot I mean you already mentioned it John I mean Roco Beck went 13 to 35 passing it was the worst game of his career he started two years at Iowa State it’s his worst completion percentage of his career he had 3.9 yards per pass attempt that’s a career worse for him as well Iowa state is a team averages 4.1 yards per play 79 plays 324 yards their worst of the season I believe Iowa State’s offense couldn’t do anything K State gave Iowa State the game and K State couldn’t capitalize on the mistakes that Iowa State made Roco Beck got away with multiple picks right into hands of Kate Defenders you got to step up and make a play this team just hasn’t done that all year when push comes to shove they fold uh it sounds like you could use some Ben holiday bottled in Bon bourbon brought to you by our friends at holiday Distillery by the way had plenty already of course are uh bringing you this show so we appreciate them great K Staters who support us so 360 Boda Ben holiday bottled and Bon bourbon go get it I tell you I will raise a glass to the Special Teams criticism you guys know that that is my baby it is one of the things that annoys the Jesus out of me more than anything with this team and you are right it was pathetic today if I hear Chris kimman boast about having a great NFL special teams coach at a press conference one more time I will vomit that will happen and I had zero B holiday bot and Bon bourbon tonight that is me totally sober saying those words I’m sick of it Chris like I love you I love what you’ve done for the program I get that you’re kind of a players coach sort of guy and you pump up your guys it gets a bit hyperbolic at times it is beyond hyperbolic with the special team [ __ ] cut it out special teams is brutal it sucks you’ve got Stanton Weber out there at Toledo man I don’t know go hire him I offered on Twitter to uh sell my house to to pay his salary next year which I might be able to get it done I don’t know I’d have to go see like what the average special teams coordinator is making but we even had a realtor on on Twitter respond to me and say that uh she would she would lower her commission toh help make it happen so we’ve already got that going if I need to go fund me whatever route it is that we have to do to get Stanton Weber back uh I will do it because I mean that’s like the thing like a game like this tonight could have been one if you had good special teams I mean the other thing Cole we just kept saying it over and over again they’re nowhere close to busting a big return I mean they can’t they’re impotent when it comes to the return game there’s just there’s nothing good that they do they have a great kicker who they routinely can’t put in the right opportunity to be successful because they can’t snap the ball I don’t even know if you mentioned Cole that they fled another they flubbed another snap hold on an extra point that damn near made him miss the extra point like they can’t I it so bad it is so bad like I don’t get it yeah well you keep talking so make sure this computer battery doesn’t die here John okay all right well that’s that’s great um I I don’t know what we make the top storyline here because I know we’re we’re going to have lots of thoughts on like the bigger picture of the program here and where things go I mean that in all honesty is probably the the top story uh top story line after this game Cole is now running upstairs guys I have no idea what’s going on here I had no idea that we were we had a charger situation going on here uh here you know what I see Matthew says can we talk about the shorts side option plays I mean that is I think Cole May briefly mentioned that once but rolling with those two or three times was very frustrating just seemed like that had no prayer of of being successful taking a page from the old Bill Snyder Playbook um and that is one of the key moments in the game you know I mean the the sequence that winds up in getting the field goal blocked you had first and goal at like the five yard line and couldn’t get it figured out and I don’t love a low percentage jump ball to trace 5y even if worked one time this year I don’t love obviously the short side option you know know Avery trying to run between the tackles just hasn’t really worked all that well this year just a myriad of issues man a myriad of issues I don’t know Cole I here’s my dilemma my dilemma is I think the the top storyline obviously is like big picture stuff with the program here but uh I don’t we got to be careful about what we’re using for teasers on that man I don’t know although it seems like everybody’s kind of put it out there you know Dy put it out there that that changes probably need to be made and need to happen uh I certainly co-signed that and um would put my name on that as well so I don’t know I just top storyline brought to you by our friends at a Linko uh your best friends in Home Improvement hopefully uh they could help out with some coach Improvement as well I don’t know if they got OC’s or special teams coaches or what but if you need anything done to your home you need new sighting you need uh color Luck Stone Shower systems you need better Windows they can do all that uh so go to Al Co home.com aleno home.com alome.com to get hooked up with our friends at aleno but yeah I mean that’s it Cole it’s been stale for a while right I mean we’ve been saying that for a while the the coaching staff has been stale kind of stagnant and it feels like that in a lot of ways and now you made a fairly risky move by promoting internally with the offensive coordinator even with Matt Wells here sort of a safety blanket it feels like it’s definitely left left something to be desired and the Special Teams is a complete and utter mess um I don’t know I’ll let you take it from there but so something needs to change like this feels to me kind of like the Texas game in 21 which led to the change in offensive coordinator from Courtney messingham to Colin Klein there’s just there’s too much on the field that looks like a poorly coached team for this to continue forward and and we’re certainly not like I this is not me saying like Chris kimman needs to go or anything like that at all I mean they were still eight and four like in some ways I think the Twitter meltdown is a little overstated but do they need some changes within the program like to evolve Beyond this like absolutely absolutely I still believe in the Floor of Chris kimman but if they want that ceiling to be anywhere back close to where it was in 2022 you’re gonna have to make some changes yeah I mean I I think everything’s gotten very stale in the program and when when you watch this team John I mean where’s the leadership like where’s the fire when you watch them like this team looks like they lack a lot of that like you know guys make a big play you know Curry said this before to us too like where’s where’s the you know everybody getting together celebrating together like there’s just a there’s a lack of passion there’s a lack of energy I really question the leadership in this program you know when you’re going to be a player-led program like Chris kman always brags about you need your players to lead and I question where the leadership is within this football team right now you know mistakes happen and I just see guys go sit on the bench and there’s lack of emotion there’s a lack of fire where’s the people that are pissed off about what transpired and you know there’s there’s a balance to being composed and not going over the top but you know you’re also paying Ben Newman to be a uh you know emotional speaker support guy whatever and you know looks like there’s not a lot of lot of fire on this team so yeah they need to make changes and you can’t run it back with this coaching staff once again you got guys on this staff that don’t try to recruit all right you need to upgrade the talent you need guys that have a willingness and a hunger to go out and recruit there are a few guys on this staff that don’t do that uh you have an offensive coordinator right now that I just don’t think you can run it back with and Conor Riley he’s a good offensive line coach but let’s be honest Sean part of the frustration with tonight again he is the offensive line coach and his offensive line played like [ __ ] okay let’s just call it like it is they were facing a run defense that was allowing 5.6 yards per carry this season excluding sacks which ranked 114th in the country out of 134 FBS teams they were the 120th graded run defense by Pro Football Focus coming into this SE or into this game today I will state that is and they have a ton of injuries at the linebacker position and apparently their best safety Gardner was out with an injury their best run Defender at the safety position who leads them with 75 tackles in case they couldn’t run the ball tonight you know case they couldn’t get more than three yards a carry with DJ giddens until the second half they busted a couple of bigger runs but they really just popped one run was a 30 36 yard run with DJ giddens Avery Johnson actually at one point had 12 carries for 86 yards uh now he lost 22 yards on the safety which was a mistake by Avery but again an issue where a linebacker just blitzes right up the a gap and nobody touches him and it was a dead giveaway that they were blitzing right up the a gap and nobody touched the guy you know that’s infuriating a simple Blitz assignment that Kate has no protection for and Avery ultimately it’s on him for scrambling back 22 yards and taking his safety and not being able to get the ball beyond the line of scare like he’s got to either go down around the 10 yard line or just throw it into the ground earlier before he’s in the end zone so that’s on him too but the offensive line play has been Dreadful in the last back half of the season and Conor Riley is the offensive line coach and that’s why I didn’t want to overreact to the Cincinnati game you know as a a small sample size because I didn’t think it looked all that much better the first couple of drives did and they ran Avery but really it uh it didn’t look all that much better I I see oron asking if we saw a climb in postgame quote about eight wins I have not seen it but I pray that it’s not him saying and trying to glorify eight wins you know I better not hear that well hey we’re still went eight and four I don’t want to hear that so that better not be what it was uh John I see you searching to try and find it but yeah well I’ve got some stuff here this is from Kell Kell says Chris kimman got defensive at times during his press conference he understands that fans want Kate to go undefeated but adds this is a hard business right now it’s a really hard business and we won eight games for the fourth year in a row uh Chris kman also refused to point the finger at anyone specific after this loss or this regular season not the time for him to be critical uh I’m not going to kill anybody everybody wants me to kill people in the program it’s a collective effort um then we got DJ gens missed the end of the game he was he was hurt I think we were aware of that uh Avery Johnson spoke with the media said he felt good physically after leaving the field following a hard hit for case’s final play okay yeah final play uh I mean look like I I mean I really don’t care what Chris kimman says in a press conference I don’t expect him to come out fiery and saying like that’s just not him I don’t think he really did that in 2021 after Texas before he made the move I will judge Chris kleinman’s actions as opposed to his words I think you know sometimes we maybe expect a little too much with all that and it’s kind of the same thing as like all of you guys on Twitter you know I saw some of it tonight like oh well if the media would ask harder questions like I guys that’s not gonna really do anything to to make any changes happen Chris kimman got to just make it happen with his actions but I I would hope that the actions reflect this offseason not an attitude of complacency with being eight and four I mean I don’t it’s got to stick in his craw man like I don’t like if he I’m I’m with him don’t come out and say Hey you know Nate katzer special teams units were terrible tonight in a postgame press conference but like we know they don’t like Iowa State they don’t like that coaching staff and they just got their ass kicked for the fourth time in five years by them like that can’t sit well and I would hope that behind closed doors the attitude is a little bit than what the public Persona is there I say that yeah I don’t know I’d like to see a little fire from the head coach um publicly at this point because it’s a new Big 12 there’s $250 million not my money invested into facilities over the last 11 12 years within this Kate football program there’s no reason that this team K State’s competitive in nil there’s no reason that Kate should be going eight and four they had everything in their hands John they were seven and one and they lost to Houston then they lose to Arizona State who I think is probably better than a lot of us thought at the time I mean they finished continued to finish strong but you looked completely lethargic in that game and like you hadn’t been coached and you come off a buy I can’t be happy with five and four in a big 12 and this big 12 I can’t accept that I’m not accepting eight and four I’m not accepting five- four in the Big 12 you know like that’s just never been my mindset like I get where K State was in the 80s and I get that there were other programs like Nebraska that fired Frank solich and they live to regret that I’m always going to take a shot at a higher ceiling than a safe floor and I want Chris Kleinman to take a chance and I want him to shoot for a higher ceiling at this point and right now running it back with this coaching staff seems like you’re satisfying for a seven and five eight and four type season next year again things can change obviously you can land guys in the portal but I’m just I’m kind of over the eight and four stuff like that doesn’t excite me anymore and I get that there’s a risk to having downfall like the Ron Prince era but I want and I’m not again I’m not saying Chris kle I was gonna say you need to be careful what you’re doing with that because I feel like people Chris kimman needs to make changes though to elevate the ceiling of this program is what I am saying we cannot be happy with the status quo of going eight and four can I be happy with losing to Iowa State four years out of five they kept talking about in the broadcast oh similar programs you can’t go one and four against Iowa State I don’t even I don’t even give a crap about Iowa State at this point but you almost lost a KU back-to-back years you know you took some fortunate breaks to get over that as well so um very frustrating uh disappointing night and disappointing November end the season and um you know we can nitpick things that happen in tonight’s game um but you know to me it’s about the bigger picture right now and and what happens over the next few weeks as the transfer portal opens up in what a week so we’ll see what happens yeah by the way Cole one and three according to your personal record book by the way K Deer doesn’t count of course so one and three oh sorry in the last four games against uh Iowa State uh our friends at HomeField apparel Will Never Let You Down they will always make the necessary changes they’ve got a great Black Friday Cyber Monday thing going on right now uh I under this Fiesta bow sweatshirt 1997 Fiesta you can get that hookup from our great friends at HomeField apparel go do it now guys go do it now at least look good if you’re going to be frustrated and meltdown look good while you’re melting down courtesy of HomeField apparel.com we’re back in just a moment looking for tickets for your next event tickets for Less is your number one source save big on every purchase when you use promo code kcsn at ticketsforless.com yeah as far as the big picture goes I do want to make this clear because I think like the Discord and if you want to join our Discord uh patreon.com threa to do that always Lively but I I got the reputation over the last like week or two of being um the guy that was perhaps being too soft on the football program I am not happy with eight and four either I I think this team definitely had the potential to do more the new Big 12 you definitely should be able to do more uh you know we know case States like nil situation is very good it sounds like it will be very good even as we head into this like Revenue sharing era um I my thing was it feels like a lot of them melting down and I I’ve even seen some of it in just the chat that we have going here you know that like this is going to plumet to the depths of being like a five and seven program or something like that’s where I’m pumping the brakes and saying that I mean climate is right in that he’s had a pretty high floor here I know we all want the ceiling to be higher he’s had a pretty high floor and as we look forward to the transfer portal it’s going to be a lot of roster movement uh because the way the roster structure is changing and walk G are in essence eliminated now there will be a lot of guys in and out of the program so you will see a lot of movement I’m sure they’re going to be guys that hurt we know about the Jace Brown tweet that was out there in the storyline leading up to the game that’s probably something else to talk about here um but the point is there probably are going to be losses that hurt where at least if you would have told a kstate fan midseason or before the season do hurt but I think they will do enough to figure it out because that’s typically what kimman has done to at least get you back to round this area as a baseline now that’s not what we want and if it just m if they keep going like status quo and make no real changes with that that will absolutely be infuriating because the potential is there like Chris kman is a very good coach he’s shown the ability to win a big 12 Championship um they have definitely done that before and they have the ability to do it again and when they did it the first time it came because Chris kimens sacked up and fired his best friend as the offensive coordinator and they got better offensively now some other things I mean they had guys like I think of like uh like Kade Warner I mean even will Howard say what you will about him especially today of all days but he he had some fire to him like some real juice to him like leadership on on the team and guys that were fired up you know Duce vau was really like ultimate leader they’re going to need to find some of that with the players too I mean I think those are it’s it’s two stale you need some better coaching but also you need to find guys within the program who can be real local leaders I mean much as I love Avery Johnson he’s just so I think in some ways it’s an asset to be so calm but I would like to see more fire from him as well and it feels like the team has kind of Taken on that personality too where they just there’s not enough emotion most of the time out there so that that’s kind of my short list like for big picture what I want to see get figured out moving into next year I would say well I mean Avery yeah Avery’s got to become a leader I mean I’m not saying he’s not necessarily a leader now but he’s got to become more of a vocal guy I mean you think about the best players on this off offense especially like DJ giddens who’s a hell of a player is a quiet guy he is a non-verbal guy jaay Brown who’s your best wide receiver is a non-verbal guy offensive line Hadley Panzer is probably your best leader but the offensive line hasn’t been good for the back half of the season and so you know it kind of rings Hollow when it comes from those guys and so yeah I mean they need more leadership I would say from an outside perspective looking in within this program um you know i’ just like to see more fire they got to execute better obviously on the field as well but um yeah I don’t I don’t know John uh just just very frustrating uh that this is what we’re staring at again and I don’t know like I don’t know what changes they’re necessarily going to make as we look ahead and forecast ahead like to me like things that are kind of baffling is they they had a bue week and Connor riy stayed up in the Box for the Arizona State game and then the week after that they they then moved Connor riy down to the field it was like that the changes have been too late and now we’re in a situation where it’s uncomfortable I’m sure for Chris kimman where he’s potentially having to ponder another change at offensive coordinator and where I become concerned is that Chris kimman hired three offensive coordinators in six years John and the only one that’s been you know up to I think the the level that we would hope has been Colin Klein which is a gim putt who was the guy that he inherited on this coaching staff and so as we talk about Chris kemman making an outside hire at offensive coordinator like who is that going to be because he hired Conor Riley and he hired Courtney messingham before and Colin Klein was kind of like who everybody just kind of wanted and so my concern is who is he gonna go out and hire if he run and again like we don’t know what he’s goingon to do with Conor riy like Conor riy could be back but Conor Riley’s offensive line was also a disaster the back half of the season and so you know I would love to keep Connor Riley on the staff I want him coaching the offensive line at this point because that clearly needs to be cleaned up as well yeah I mean I think that’s a great Point like that’s a whole part of the issue like half the season they could not run the ball consistently just like traditional ground game and that was a killer I mean that was something you needed to have tonight if they could have done that tonight the game was definitely there for the taking but they had no semblance of a running game and uh yeah but can you do that can you thread that needle you know can you can you put the toothpaste back in the tube after that it will it will be very awkward um I don’t know it’s hard to know I guess the other thing I would say Cole is like I mean he did hire Matt Wells which like I I think on the surface seemed to me like an okay higher still relatively safe but probably more upside than some of the others but it’s hard to know exactly how much of an impact that had or what level of responsibility he had versus what was going on with Connor also if he’s in charge of Avery you know I mean the results were definitely mixed this year um there’s obviously potential there but you would have hoped by by the end of the year he would be a little bit more consistent um it just still feels like something’s bit off there I actually really like the comment I maybe Nick can bring this up a couple guys up here who was it zde 34 that said Avery needs to get gritty uh BYU Iowa State Arizona State Colorado all have gritty guys and that’s that’s so true man you watch Sam levit like Sam levit was on the same field with Avery Johnson and that guy’s going balls out like he’s he’s a tough SOB uh Roco is obviously a pretty tough dude he was not not great at all tonight but like when they needed a touchdown run down by the goal line like he put his head down and just blasted his way in there he’s got a little more bulk to him I understand that but like just the whole personality too I mean even and you say Colorado like shador man shador is a pretty tough sob and he’s definitely a non-nonsense leader guy that’ll show a little bit more emotion um yeah I mean rlof too rlof is definitely grittier I mean I think Avery is world is more naturally talented than redoff but he is definitely grittier BYU’s had a better season so um I’m I’m with you on that I I don’t know how to assess Matt Well’s role and all of that is he the you know I guess Cole some of the worry people might have is if you do make a change is it just then elevating thatt Wells to your offensive coordinator that would seem to be much in line with like what Chris kman would typically do um I don’t know if you’re putting betting odds on it that would probably be what you would expect uh but yeah I I don’t know like the thing you and I talked about it during the game like can’t have it both ways everybody wants Avery to put his head down and they want him to run more right and they want him to be more gritty when it comes to running game and I get that there are time there’s a time in a place for that and tonight there were multiple times where you probably would have liked to have seen him stay in bounds fight for an extra yard or two get him into a fourth and manageable third and manageable or potentially even get the first down at the same time we have talked all off season heading into this season and over the past several seasons that Kansas state gets their quarterback hurt every single year and K State has to play a game or two down their starting quarterback because they run the heck out of them and so now we’re asking like for this Balancing Act where we’re like we want Avery to put his head down we want him to run we want him to you know get these extra yards but oh yeah we don’t want Avery to get hurt and so like what’s the in between there like we want our starting quarterback to be healthy for every game this season and I think probably for the first time John in maybe eight years Kansas State’s had a quarterback that I mean did Will Howard start every game last year will I guess didn’t miss a game did he that I’m missing I don’t think so I don’t think will missed a game um but you know for the most part you know over seven or eight years you had a starting quarterback that would miss at least one game due to injuries and Avery was able to play through some injuries the back half of the season after being having one suffered at Colorado and so yes I would have liked to have seen him you know you know run the ball with a little more Authority at times certainly uh I will also say that in the midp point of the third quarter tonight he had 12 carries for 86 yards he was leading the team and rushing he was running the ball effectively he also was 10 of 20 passing for 203 yards and over 10 yards per pass attempt at that point in the game the astonishing thing about this game is is that with 441 left in the third quarter so almost 20 minutes of game time left he said had 363 yards of offense they concluded with 364 yards of offense It’s the final number all right and 22 of those yards were lost on a safety obviously that Avery took but over their final three drives K State had negative four yards of offense uh just disappearing act DJ gens being out obviously hurt them as well but uh very frustrating and like if I’m looking and pinpointing a certain part of this game that just continues to eat away at me it’s I mean obviously had the mistakes early on the with the Keegan Johnson fumble and the errant pitch and the fumble but John the thing that gets me is they had ran a shorts side option earlier in the game didn’t have a chance and working and then they get down to the five yard line on second and goal and they run a short side option again and there’s no space to work with and that just goes back to I look at the Arizona State game and they tried to run the same exact play twice in three plays both times not working against a nine m box that just screams concern to me that that’s what you’re offensive coordinator is is drawing up in situations like that and then you eventually settle for a field goal and again we’ve already harped on the Special Teams disaster and also probably could harp on the fact that they decided to go for a kick but the way that the game was being called I’m not sure they would drawn up a play that worked yeah I mean I think the better option would have been just to try and run DJ giddens the play before if you’re gonna go four down territory you know I don’t know there are a million ways to dissect it there have clearly been plenty to be FR there has been plenty be frustrated about and and this is I try you know halfway through the season I was the guy standing up more for Conor riy because the numbers were so good and even though there were moments where people were frustrated I was like Hey guys like look that the numbers are saying that he’s doing a pretty good job but that fell off a cliff uh about halfway through the season and that’s coincided obviously with the late season slide that’s that’s happened here so yeah I mean I guess if you really pinned me down to it my optimism level that like changes will be made to a place where we’re all happy with them this offseason I mean I’m definitely not optimistic about that will changes be made that get partially to satisfying fans you know maybe you’ve got a chance at getting some of that that happens but um I don’t know we’ll see I’m just saying with the the climing quotes I guess that we got tonight him you know kind of saying hey I’m not GNA come after anybody and killing but I that does not really move me one way or the other on what I think will happen this off season because I think if it happens you know climing stood up there at the press conference and said well I’m not going to make any major changes and then on Saturday Conor riy was down on the sideline so it’s just not his to go do it publicly I still think that I would not let that get you disheartened on that if you want to be mad that hey we should see fire and you know you should be really upset after this that’s one thing I think you also got it no one will want to hear this but you do have to keep in mind I mean Chris kman did just go through his difficult family situation and maybe his perspective right now was a little bit different than even it would be at other times and that probably did screw some things up during the bye and had they just hung on to win the Houston game nobody would be happy but it would at least have been more I mean they would have been nine and three like I predicted right so I’m just playing devil’s advocate here that’s not gonna make anybody very happy I understand that I don’t know okay no NOP all right no not gonna go there moving on on Avery Johnson I did want to say with Avery um I’m with you I think I think Avery it has it was not a bad season from Avery you know what I mean I saw someone in the chat saying like oh Avery’s a bust like okay guys we’ve done this you’ve done this many times throughout the year Cole hold up his numbers compared to the other quarterbacks in his class uh Stacks up pretty well it’s been a solid season for him it just has been solid with a lot of ups and downs and much of that you know you could attribute a lot of that to everything else going on with the team two and a receiver core that was a little bit disappointing and you know his top guy is Jace Brown who dominates the first half of this game after rumors were out there on social media that he was already in the portal like transferring and we’re talking about whether or not he’s going to play so there’s a lot going on right that could very much be affecting that too I just do think when you look at some other quarterbacks in the league that you would rank ahead of him right now one of the biggest differences is uh just just more gritty more gritty and it doesn’t always have to be putting your head down to to run you know it can be just a leadership emotion that sort of thing that we’re saying we’re not seeing from him I think that’s definitely a place where he can improve so I think we’re kind of in the same place on Avery I me we talked about it during the game I saw a lot of criticism flying in the way of Avery during the game on social and and texts that were coming in and look Avery has a lot of areas that he’s got to improve but I kept looking at Iowa State John and I kept looking at the numbers Avery Johnson significantly out outplayed Roco Beck tonight of Iowa State Roco Beck had 3.9 yards per pass Avery Johnson had 10 yards per pass going into the fourth quarter Roco best completed 37% of his passes Andy got away with what three to four interceptions tonight just massive mistakes so Avery I mean how how many interceptable balls that Avery throw tonight none did he have one that was even uh at risk throw of an interception I saw a lot of well there there was one that went I mean his guys were dropping passes which wasn’t helping there was one that went off of Keegan Johnson’s hands I think they got bed up in the air should have been caught jce jaay dropped the ball that should have been caught that was for about 15 yards as well um you know and again Avery made some mistakes but like Avery’s mistakes got highlighted more because the rest of his team couldn’t overcome it while Roco Beck Kansas State didn’t capitalize on defense when he tried to make mistakes to give Kansas a a break during the game and as a result everything gets thrown more on Avery because he’s the losing team there but if I’m an Iowa State fan and Rocko Beck two or three of those passes get picked off that are thrown right to the K State Defense he’s getting ripped to shreds for choking in their biggest game in IA State football program history tonight and so you know Roco Beck is a a quality quarterback but if you look at the final stat lines of the season I mean Avery and Rocco’s stat lines are not that far apart Avery’s going to finish with 21 touchdowns and what eight interceptions on the year Roco Beck was at 18 and8 coming into tonight as well and so yes again there are things that you want to see for Avery to improve at and he needed to be better at a lot of different moments and some of his mistakes were huge mistakes but you know I just there were other issues at play tonight that were not just Avery Johnson again it gets back to the fact that you’re going up against one of the wor and keep in mind like Avery Johnson’s passing numbers John 10 of 20 for 203 yards at about the first 40 minutes of game action this was an Iowa State Defense that was a top 10 defense in the P really good pass defense this this was a top 10 pass defense in the country they were allowing 154 yards per game through the air and I hate quoting per game stats but pass efficiency defense yards per pass attempt Etc they were top 10 in the country and yet Avery Johnson was averaging a 1.12 yards per pass against a a top quality pass D in Iowa State when you couldn’t run the ball and that’s when inexplicable to me is that you could not run the football John you and I looked at each other at one point we’re like it’s like a fiveman box like they got like five six guys in the Box you got six blockers execute your blocks run the football and they couldn’t and so that that’s that’s a frustrating Point that’s carried on for much of the Season much of the back half of the year yeah I mean and like I I’m just looking at some of the comments now we have a bottom 10 pass defense I mean they had their issues this year but they were pretty good today pass defense it was Roco Beck’s worst passing performance of his two-year career guys they were number nine in the country in explosive passing coming or I’m sorry number nine in offensive explosiveness coming into this game last year they were number one in the country John what do you think Iowa State’s longest completion was tonight God that’s a great question because there was not a huge one 21 yards yeah they did not hit a huge one their longest pass completion they were 13 of 35 and the longest completion in this game was 21 yards all right so they didn’t hit you for any explosives now part of that is because K State gave him a lot of short Fields but also keep in mind that that Iowa state in the second half offense they scored three points on five drives the other two came on a safety it was 24 to 14 at halftime K State lost 29 to 21 uh Kate’s defense while there are frustrating things like when Jack fabis gets lined up on Jaden Higgins and you rush three you got eight dropping and you give up just an easy touchdown pass or you allow a third and nine to be converted that’s certainly frustrating but at the end of the day 13 to 35 137 yards through the air 3.9 yards per pass his worst passer rating of his two-year career probably GNA be his worst qbr of his career and Jaylen null John averages 6.2 yards per catch and his longest completion is nine yards to Jaylen null Jaylen null led the country guys with eight catches of 40 or more yards coming into this game these two wide receivers were two of the top 20 most explosive wide receivers uh in college football Jaden Higgins and Jaylen null uh Kate did a nice job shout out to Jacob Harish and BJ Payne I thought he played really well on the defensive side of the football Brendan Mt made some nice plays as well there were guys certainly to highlight uh but uh I I I can’t put it on the defense you know well that’s where I’m gonna I’m gonna step in here I’m just I’m seeing some of the comments man like guys I understand everyone’s really mad we’re really mad all right I think our curse per episode ratio went up because of this one today but just meltdown in the right spots the pass defense was more than okay today the defense was more than okay today the first three Iowa State scoring drives came on 28 yards 30 yards and 48 yards because of defense and special teams giving them short Fields so like just melt down in the correct ways and also if you are somebody in the comments that is going to in our opinion go way off the deep end way too far off the deep end and say that you want the head coach fired could you get his name right it’s Chris kimman that’s the head coach let’s get his name right if you’re going to melt down like that let’s just that’s what I would like to see from our our commenters here in the chat all right if you’re gonna melt down just melt down in a way that still makes it look like you kind of know ball that’s that’s what I’m gonna say we there are people asking about Jace Brown uh Jace Brown there’s the tweet that comes out uh before the game about him heading to the transfer portal it the noise got to a point where he had to send out his own tweet saying like hey I’m focused on one thing and that’s you know being with my guys and beating Iowa State he shows up and torches Iowa State early with 106 yards receiving and then drops a pass kind of Fades but he did I mean early on I gotta give him credit like he was playing hard yeah and he was playing with some energy playing some inspired football when it looked like maybe not everybody else was you told me he had the the best statistical season of any K State receiver since 2014 when our own Curry seon and Tyler Lockett both had a thousand plus yards receiving if he’s going to be gone I’ll you know and we have certainly heard some things that might have suggested that that would it didn’t shock us we’ll put it that way when we saw that I don’t think anything is for sure and there there may be some questions about you know we’re talking about guys with grit and fire and passion like does he fit that mold I think that is still up in the air you’re in kind of a tough spot though because he clearly is the most dynamic certainly receiver and one of the most dynamic skill players that you have on the team so yeah I mean he has three catches for 106 yards tonight 35 yards per catch 3 two touchdowns you know he came into the night with 657 yards receiving so that puts him through 12 games at uh what 763 yards um for Kansas State this season which I believe I haven’t double checked myself on this going off memory but I believe Malik nolles was the highest since Curry ston and Tyler locket in 2024 and that was at 725 yards I think Brian Byron Pringle had 724 uh and so you’re talking about Jay Brown producing the best statistical season from a overall receiving yard standpoint since Tyler Lockett and Curry seon a program that has struggled to you know get Elite wide receivers over the last decade plus and J Brown is a really good pass catcher like he is a big play threat we knew coming into this season there were the numbers out there I think he led the country among two freshman and yards per catch last season and this year he did nothing to be a detriment to that um as I get distracted here with BYU BYU is doing absolutely everything they can to try and hand this game to Houston which would keep Iowa State out of the Big 12 championship game and uh really for my purposes I would love the fact that it would put Colorado in the Big 12 championship game but I don’t know that Houston’s GNA have the offense to take this all the way home anyway continue yeah so uh you know Jace is probably a guy you need to find a way to keep now there there probably are some issues at play there he’s a Florida kid I’m sure there’s some suitors that will probably be coming for Jace Brown after seeing some of the big plays that he has made but he is a a big play threat probably your biggest play threat you’ve had in quite some time now I get there are also frustrations to Jason is game where he’s not really the complete wide receiver you know his blocking at times leaves something to be desired he makes some mistakes you know does he fight for the ball enough at times um but he’s a talented piece can you really afford to lose a guy like that when you need to be bringing in more talent for Avery Johnson in this passing game because my question would be then this John you know they were trying to sell Avery Johnson Dynamic passing attack coming into this season and they were in the portal working guys and they came out of it no offense but with Dante cus that’s who they got and Dante cus gave them what a 100 yards through the air always have that Arizona State game yeah and so and credit to him I mean he’s played hard in the the last three or four games of the season but you know you couldn’t go out and land that big piece this this last off season and now you’re talking about potentially losing a guy like Jace and then having more pieces to fill with DJ GID potentially going pro maybe your most talented offensive player as well you’re losing your left tackle in Easton kilty Hadley Panzer will be gone um they couldn’t figure out I guess maybe one of the biggest criticism I have for Conor Riley is he could never figure out how to use Dylan Edwards all year never figured it out couldn’t use him effectively in the passing game or the running game of course that goes to Nate cats or two on the Special Teams we thought that would be a big part of like Cas they would be a home run type special teams and never really had anything outside of that Arizona game when it came to getting return Cole you don’t see a lot of returns in the NFL so you know you bring it in that’s true but I mean just look at tonight John I mean how many they had what three kicks that were returnable that they returned and they never looked like they were close to busting one on any of them there were short punts tonight now that was Sterling Lockett back on those but again I don’t mean well one team did bring a return back past the 50 it was not case take yeah yeah not case so so you you have you know if you look at at the wide receiver room Trey spy is a guy we know they’d love to keep talented red shirt freshman he’s going to have some suitors that’s the unfortunate part of the way this all works is there are going to be teams trying to lure guys into the portal they’re going to be tampering Etc case they could very well be doing the same thing though it it’s a two-way street um you know they they got to go land some pieces out of the portal you know you look at NE like what does DJ giddens decide to do and then you got Dylan Edwards and Joe Jackson at running back you know you got to go get some offensive line guys I mean are these are these freshman that red shirted this year they going to be ready next year talented pieces like Gus Hawkins uh Navaro shanki who came in from what South Dakota they red shirted this year they were true freshman can you rely on that you need veteran guys offensive lineman can be expensive in the portal uh you got to go land at least one wide receiver probably two uh at the receiver position if Jace is gone if Jace is back you probably just need to go get one uh now that also depends on what Keegan does well I was goingon to say zde asked about Keegan no ke Keegan Johnson is not done I think for us it’s more a reliability issue there you know through two years he just has not been healthy enough to be out there consistently producing like consistently productive it was a little better this year in terms of like him actually being on the field but from a production standpoint it it was not great just look at the wide receiver numbers tonight John I mean Jace had three for 106 Keegan had two for 19 and not another wide receiver caught a ball uh nothing from try tonight Garrett Oakley has four for 78 from the tight end Position will Swanson one for 12 Joe Jackson one for five Braden Lofton has a drop uh you know you got some talented tight ends probably coming back Braden Lofton will anio Garrett Oakley Hall eligibility remaining and those guys could all be back but you got to you got to offset that with some receiver talent and uh you watch other teams in the Big 12 play and we watch other teams play against K State and you know I often find myself you know gosh how do they have two guys better than anyone K State has I want to be that team now so K State needs to go find a way to sell sell something to get some talented pieces for this offense and uh get better uh outlook for the defense next year well uh and obviously we’ll probably be to better answer this and the portal opens in like a week and we’ll have a better sense of like who’s back who’s not over the next month heading into the bowl game but uh Austin Moore will be gone at linebacker Dez Pernell Austin Roma both could be back at linebacker Roma only being a sophomore Perell will be a senior next year seagull will be gone BJ Payne could be back uh obviously Jacob parish is the guy that I think is Priority One to to retain yeah uh you got to keep Jacob Parish in Manhattan he’s got one year left he is a lock down corner he is you know one of the better Corners in the Big 12 Conference got to find a way to keep him Keenan Garber is gone Justice James we probably expect to be back uh you know kind of a cheap option at corner gives you some depth there uh you look at safety Jordan Riley gone so really you’ve got Jack fabis BJ Payne back seagull gone uh you got Wesley Fair who was a red shirt freshman this year mainly played on special teams I don’t know I could go down the list defensive line you probably have quality depth that’s coming back Bren Brenan mod will be gone but that’s a big loss you’re GNA have all the you’ll have the guy that you was consistent this year but everybody else that we feel like is Young and talented is gonna need to step up man Eli Leo you know is a a good piece to have back a d tackle you hope that you get guys like Jordan Allen Toby OS insomni to come back um you know and cheaty Ryan Davis at defensive end Etc if you can get all those guys to come back you’ve got some things to work with on the defensive line but um they need more linebacker depth and they need to figure out the secondary because that was that was certainly a disappointment for much of this season you know they talked about this secondary like it was going to be one of the best in the Big 12 Phil steel blame Phil steel when we talked John the two-lane game you know that’s when we saw the first red flags right and I tried to dismiss it because I was like oh you know they’ll it’s early in the season they got a couple new guys they’re breaking in because this was a defense that was 15th in the country in pass efficiency defense last year and top 20 in completion percentage allowed so I just assumed they would figure it out Kobe Savage will Lee moved on but they had a lot of pieces back and it didn’t get much better um that wasn’t the problem tonight to be clear but for much of the season the secondary left something to be desired and a lot of third and Longs converted because of miscommunication or coverage errors yeah tonight there was a a third and 10 just because Keenan Garber gets a pi and they get a first down and I think ultimately got points on it and so mistakes like that shooting yourself in the foot not assignment sound got to get better at Corners aan Rich they really like it corner he was a true freshman this year Donovan Macintosh a bigger corner but um yeah Jake redoff slinging it right now man he’s some nice throws down the field yeah um yeah not looking good for a for a BYU loss right now so you’re probably looking at an Arizona State Iowa State big gag worthy I won’t watch so go go Arizona State though yeah I mean but Jordan Tyson you said got hurt tonight so yeah that does suck there receiver who had been torching everybody it wasn’t just K State man he continued to kill everybody uh he might not play Yeah that would that would suck that would suck for all involved you have anything else any other closing thoughts that you want to get to no no I think I said enough um hopefully I mean I guess like timing a changes right you think about after the Texas game in 2021 Chris kimman made the changes like a few days after that game was it see I can’t remember the timeline at all it was about a week after the Texas game I think it was a Thursday or Friday it was like a Friday news dump um that had occurred and messingham and Jason right Ray the wide receivers coach were relieved to their duties it happened well before the bowl game because you remember Colin was calling the plays right so it’ll be interesting from a timing perspective what they try to do there um I don’t know so we we’ll see yeah okay well thank you to uh all of our great sponsors holiday Distillery Al Linko HomeField apparel thank you to uh Nick for making it all happen behind the scenes we will be back in a couple of days with Dy to uh I mean I guess get back on a somewhat regular schedule with basketball now I don’t know little little depressing kind of to be like well let’s the end of football and we’ll find out about a bowl game too here coming up but I don’t think anyone I don’t think any of us have much enthusiasm for what the Bold destinations can be at this point yeah yeah I don’t really care to be honest so I I do not care at all let me go on the record and say that I I do not care at all um especially if it’s going to be Memphis uh ym Mark please get on some new bull tiin at least at least something that would have a little bit of novelty value being new be nice um all right but that’s it that’ll do it for us thanks for listening uh tough one tonight tough season in a lot of ways uh we will we will talk to you all soon take care
