the Jays desperately need something big to happen to them this off season and although they’re going after Juan stto it’s still the white whale that’s still the one that they’re chasing but the one that they may not get so what’s the backup plan who’s an option that can help take the Jays back to the playoffs we’ll break that down and much more on this episode of Jay’s digest welcome in everybody to Jay’s digest I’m your host Peter ronus alongside host Nick C and Nick the difference between this offseason and last year’s offseason is Monumental in my opinion and let me explain so last offseason it was Otani or bust that’s what we were told that’s what the fan base started to believe and then you had him and not so fast he’s a Los Angeles Dodger and then he’s lifting the World Series trophy above his head in his first year in Los Angeles with the Dodgers so ultimately it wasn’t meant to be but this year feels a a little bit different it’s the same narrative it still feels like it’s SoDo or it’s a colossal disappointment but I’m here to offer a rebuttal to that because this free agent class is so much deeper and so much better than the one that we saw a year ago that the Blue Jays even with their plan B their plan C maybe even their Plan D can help Vault themselves back into being a playoff team and uh this guy in particular is a very interesting name to keep keep an eye on yeah reports are obviously swirling for every player in the book but a new report from Bob Nill has revealed some interesting details and let’s dive run into it you mentioned it free agency their backup plans now which again stto still hasn’t signed anywhere so he still obviously of course could go to the Jays but if not or even if they do I just depending on what you think of them blue jay’s quote badly covet end quote free agent Slugger Anthony sender per report coming off a care year with the Orioles we had a big discussion a couple nights ago on our live stream basically according to all accounts Anthony sanir is a guy that Jays are actively going for we of course know the tronto Blue Jays are shooting for the Stars this winter and one a particular surface is a potential fit while rumors continue to swirl around the Jays injur in stto and Max freed USA today’s Bob Nill reported Monday that they badly covet Anthony santandar and Peter we’ll start by getting your thoughts on this a switch hitter he can play Outfield not very good defensively his primary would probably be you know he can play in the Outfield maybe play 80 games there also play a ton of d a switch hitting guy who is coming off a career year with the Orioles 30-year-old he hit 235 with 44 home runs we’ll get into his career stats here in a minute which might cause some hesitation he only put up a 2.9 War because of his defense but for a team that desperately needs power hitting I think that this um it is encouraging to see that they are desperately and badly they badly covet Anthony sender and it would also take him out of a AL East opponent in the Orioles yeah exactly and he’s a guy who is an absolute blue J killer and he has been for the past couple of years now so the Orioles ever since they got not good Anthony Santander has been a horn a thorn in the side of the Blue Jays every time they face them so yeah that’s that’s a plus in its own right even if he comes here and sucks you’re getting him out of Baltimore so there you go check mark number one in my book but like you mentioned Nick switch hitter a guy who has light Tower power to to put it lightly here uh this guy mashes yeah he doesn’t get on base at a ridiculously high clip he uh doesn’t hit for a high average average but he’s a switch hitter who mashes from both sides of the plate and doesn’t really play in a very pitcher friendly ballp part in a hitter friendly ballpark in Baltimore especially not on uh on the left field side of things so even though they’re moving it up a little bit here maybe we could see some uh home run totals creep up even more for Anthony santand there I don’t know what a contract for him looks like but I was doing a I was doing some research did a deep dive there and a lot of uh algor rhythms and predictions I see have them at around four years or 5 years 90 million or 4 years 80 million take your pick but I think that’s a very fair deal for a guy who is not even who is 30 who still has a lot of years left to give I think and is the number one need for the Toronto Blue Jays like you talk about the bullpen all you want talk about an extra arm in that rotation they need power because they were one of the worst teams in terms of power out output last year in Major League Baseball and this guy checks a lot of boxes he he has his deficiencies as a player which is why he’s not going to get $150 million contract which is why he’s probably in line for 80 or 90 million but that’s okay that can’t be your only addition of the off season which is something that we touched on in the live stream Nick yeah you can see the bottom before we get into the stats he did a lot of damage Dan Jays like you mentioned 21 home runs 15 doubles 52 RBI a 258 career batting average almost an 850 Ops like it’s great he hasn’t been great in the Rogers Center however but again I think when you looking at his you know his stats and everything like that and again they’re ining Corbin Burns Anthony Santander but looking at his stats here the reason he’s not going to get too much money is ultimately and where the risk comes in a little bit is obviously his lack of Defense but his on base percentage isn’t super high so if he’s not hitting for that power which he has the past three seasons putting up basically 30 or more home runs in each of those years besides last season uh 2023 you know basically 30 at 28 his on base percentage and some of the other stuff isn’t super useful but for a team like the Toronto Blue Jays who desperately have you desperately need power bestly in the need of power have a ton of contact hitters as is they have some guys who can you know not hit for a ton of power but can put the bat on the ball you think Ernie Clement even B bashed he still strikes out a good bit but he’s not necessarily a power hitter their only big power hitter is really at this juncture unless I’m missing somebody Vladimir Guerrero Jr no one else right now stands out to me as a premier power hitter you think George Springer his time is pass dton Vero he hits four power and maybe you can make the argument he’s a power hitter but he’s not an elite hitter and threat he’s a and you have lero and left like no one else at this point so if you need somebody if there’s a team that can kind of afford a low on base percentage given them what they are high power guy I mean it is the Toronto Blue Jays and that’s why I think they badly covered him and I also think that’s why they’re probably going to end up being the team who maybe overpays a little bit for his Services because they’re the team that desperately needs what he has and needs it the most out of any other team in the MLB yeah so obviously plan a here is Juan stto and we’ve been on that train all offseason long and hopefully this whole thing gets resolved soon because one of us is going to go crazy and it it might be both of us Nick at this point the way that we’ve been hammering this point to death but we mentioned it in the live stream uh let’s say you have an off season of Max freed who is a prime target for the Toronto Blue Jays right now second is Anthony Santander who again they are U highly coveting him those are not my words those are badly covet they badly covet Anthony Santander so I’m not misconstruing anything they badly covet both of those guys Anthony Santander and Max freed but you feel like you need one more bat in there who’s available I take a look up and down the list I take a look at the affordable options I have two names it is uh it is Tyler O’Neal and it is Max Kepler maybe Cody Bellinger you could throw in there as well feels a need for the Toronto Blue Jays it can do a little bit of everything but those three guys I think alongside Max freed and Anthony santand there that’s a pretty damn good off season and then you make the subsequent moves in your Bullpen uh you hope for a bounceback season out of bashet you hope for uh just some consistency all across the board and I think you have a playoff team if you make the necessary moves in the bullpen alongside those three additions and I don’t think they’re as far-fetched as some people make it out to be here yeah I like that Kepler coming off of a horrible year but he does have some upside and I think you there’s a lot of people out there who’d rather him over a guy like George Springer even though he hit sub 700 Ops last year I love the Tyler O’Neal uh you know signing idea he is you know he’s Canadian everything would work out there he’s a good power hitter coming off of a great year like I think at this point if you’re looking at it from the perspective of the J Anthony santand there Max freed and Tyler O’Neal would be my three you fix the bullpen maybe you make a trade for some you know minor additions up and down depending on how you want to kind of fine-tune the edges and you know like the tip of the team but I like it I I like that offseason and leave down below if you made it this far Tyler O’Neal Max freed and Anthony sender you can replace Tyler O’Neal with whoever you prefer out of the bunch maybe some people prefer Cody Bellinger I think uh I think that would be an adequate offseason if they strike out on Juan sto if they get woto well we have a whole another video I’m sure for that if that uh hopefully if that ever happens but any final thoughts on this things are picking up we saw Blake Snell sign things are going down and um I think that the uh I have a sneaking suspicion Anthony santand there is going to be a blue J and I’m good with that I’m absolutely good with that as long as it’s not the only move and Nick I think we need to come to the fact to accept that George Springer is probably going to be in the lineup next year so so whoever whoever you’re getting as an outfielder is going to be replacing Joey L peredo by the looks of it right now depend On’s Health but but if you the more names you acquire and the more pieces that you add to this lineup the further down it pushes George Springer and maybe in a more secondary role as opposed to a featured role like he has been in the past couple of Seasons where he struggled maybe he could regain some of that form I think George Springer will see more fast balls he’ll see more pitches to hit if he’s hitting seventh or sixth sixth or seventh in your lineup as opposed to Leading off every day and expected to be the table setter at uh 34 years old or 35 years old whatever he is he’s not that player anymore he was grading his first couple of Seasons with Toronto he just doesn’t have it anymore he he’s not in his prime and that was to be expected when the Blue Jays sign him to that contract contct it’s unfortunate the way that uh he’s uh he’s going out here and he’s a shell of himself but I think he can still be effective in a secondary role which is why you need to make the subsequent moves and you need to bring in the pieces to address your lineup concerns because the bullpen to me is not the biggest concern we see how random that could be from year to year Tim MAA had a 1.5 ER one season then he goes to having a six and get DFA you just don’t know how to project Bullpen arms unless they are the top-of-the-line highest paid guys in the league which I don’t think is very smart for the Blue Jays to go after Tanner Scott is the number one free agent reliever he’s going to command close to $15 million a season I think that money is better allocated towards other holes that need to be filled and then maybe you could swing a trade for a cheaper option or you can have yiel Rodriguez in a more elevated role the number one thing for me right now Nick the offense fix that sucker up and then the rest of the team you just go from there yeah hopefully this bad badly cover and all these you know badly covered reports rumors transition to an actual signing and hopefully we’ll be talking about that soon because believe me we want to see an actual signing as much as you all do but that’ll wrap it up let us know down below what your thoughts are and hopefully the Jays hopefully this is the beginning of a very interesting offseason for the Jays an interesting in a good way not a bad way because either way I think it’s going to be interesting thank you guys for watching see you later and
