as we pass the quarter pole of the season and Thanksgiving is in our rear view window trade rumors are starting to circulate about some Islanders players will break down the rumors and discuss how realistic they are we’ve got that and a whole lot more coming up on today’s locked on Islanders podcast you’re locked on Islanders your daily podcast on the New York Islanders part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day welcome everybody to the Friday edition of the locked on Islanders podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day I want to thank everyone who food family and football what could be bad but now time to get back to hockey and boy do we have a lot to talk about on today’s show we are past Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving is always that time in the NH schedule where you you know the old cliche is that if you’re not in a playoff spot by Thanksgiving American Thanksgiving uh you’re probably not going to make the playoffs and it’s not 100% true but it is true a lot more often than not and guess what unfortunately the Islanders are not in a playoff spot as of Thanksgiving and the good news is they’re not that far out so not in a playoff spot but not so far out that they’re incapable of catching up but here’s the thing when your team is struggling and make no mistake the Islanders are struggling at 8 10 and five that means that out of 23 games they’ve won eight and lost 15 even though they did get a point in five of those 15 losses so you know I know the injuries are a factor but when your team is struggling and the Islanders are all of a sudden rumors start to circulate and the rumors that circulate are if this team is still not in contention when we get to January February and then get up near the trade deadline who’s going to be available and who might be interested and you know I know a lot of this is speculation and that there is nothing imminent right now but there is still talk out there about some Islanders players possibly being available uh Mike Johnson Leafs Insider talked about the Toronto Maple Leafs being interested in possibly adding Brock Nelson because the Leafs are desperately looking for depth at Center and again nothing is imminent there’s nobody this report from tsn’s overdrive up in Toronto they’re not saying yeah Brock Nelson will you know or may be a Toronto Maple Leaf in the next couple of weeks but tono is looking for depth at center Austin Matthews has been dealing with injuries a few other players have been injured and you know again would Brock Nelson be interested in going up to Toronto a team that on paper certainly has a chance at winning a Stanley Cup this year even though they kind of haven’t won one since 1967 but all joking aside uh the the logic of Brock Nelson being available or the or the Maple Leafs being interested in Brock Nelson makes a lot of sense now right now Brock Nelson is having a really good season he just had a three-point night in the Islanders last game he has 10 goals he has 17 points in 23 games uh you know that that puts him near the top as far as the Islanders point you know Getters are concerned if you trade Brock Nelson if that is something that the Islanders organization led by L larell decides to do you are essentially saying unless you trade him for somebody who is ready to play as well as Brock Nelson and right now and it wouldn’t have to be in one trade you can make you know you could trade away Brock Nelson and bring in another quality second line pivot but if you trade away Brock Nelson realistically you are saying that this core has more or less run its course and that it is time to start a retool if not a rebuild now Brock Nelson is an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season and according to a number of reports there have not been serious discussions between Nelson’s agent and the Islanders about an extension so he has a cap hit of $6 million and Nelson is 33 years old will the Islanders I if the Islanders are not in contention come the trade deadline trading Brock Nelson makes sense if you are committing to a retool here’s the caveat we know l has always said he is not going to do that he doesn’t believe in a retool or a rebuild he wants to try to win every year well at 33 going on 34 you can’t sign Brock Nelson to a six five six sevene contract two three I don’t want to go past three if he takes a little less money per year I would maybe go to four years for Brock I love Brock Nelson I think he’s been a great Islander but he’s also the guy who you could get the most for in return if the Islanders opt to trade it may me take a new GM to do that or a complete Collapse by the Islanders between now and the trade deadline but I can guarantee you right now Brock Nelson could get the Islanders a very pretty return at or before the NHL trade deadline he would be a great like a contending team like the Maple Leafs would jump at the opportunity to add a brock Nelson he’s a leader he’s a consistent goal scorer he he plays you know decently on in all three zones of the ice the question is whether or not L larell would make that move and again it depends on how the Islanders are doing and where they are in the standings between now and the trade deadline the other factor is the other factor is the other player who has been mentioned possibly in some little bits of trade Buzz around the internet is Kyle palmary and like Nelson palmary is 33 he is in the final year of his deal he has a $5 million cap hit a little bit bit lower than Nelson’s $6 million cap hit again I wouldn’t mind resigning Pals but not for more than three years for if he takes less money he is still at this stage in his career a a legitimate second line guy who can help on the power play who is a streaky player who when he is hot and streaking is more than capable of really carrying a team so you know if you’re the New York Islanders would you be willing to part with him in order to add prospects or picks or both and help this team get younger faster more skilled keep in mind this too if you really really want to do this and the players are amenable you could trade either one of them or both of them at the deadline and if they become free agents over the summer resign them so you can actually keep them for next year and still get picks Andor prospects in return if they go somewhere else whether it’s Toronto or some other team team as a rental so again it’s early it it’s way too soon to say where the Islanders will be come January and February when we get to the trade deadline but the rumors are out there I have to at least mention them and we’ll see what happens I could tell you right now unless the Islanders are way way out of the playoff Chase and the negotiations with these two players are not going well Lou larell will not want to trade either one of them but would it be the best move for the team possibly yes we have to see how it all plays out I love both players I think they’ve been great Islanders but the question is in the long term and in the short term maybe what’s best for this hockey team we’ll see how this all plays out we have got a lot more to get to on today’s show we will talk about the two games coming up to this afternoon 3:00 Eastern Time Islanders in Washington Saturday evening back home to play Buffalo we’ll preview both of those games we’ll talk a little bit about what the Islanders have to be thankful for and Islander fans have to be thankful for and oh yes our Islanders birthday of the day a Finnish Winger who was with the Islanders in in the mid to late 80s let’s see if you can guess who that is we’ve got all that and a lot more still to come on today’s locked on Islanders podcast today’s episode is we sent you join built.com lockon NHL to start earning points on your rent payments today two games coming up this weekend and because it is the 4day holiday weekend we get a afternoon tilt between the New York Islanders and the Washington Capitals down in Washington DC 3:00 Eastern Time start on Friday and uh the capitals have been a big surprise maybe one of the bigger surprises right now they are 156 and one coming off a 54 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning in Tampa so they remain hot and they’re doing all of this without Alex oetkin who is out of the lineup with an injury the capitals have scored the second most goals in the NHL and they’ve given up the seventh least so on both ends of the ice the Caps are getting the job done and uh the power play has struggled they’re only 21st in the league still much better than the Islanders 17 a. half% but the PK is excellent third in the league 85.5% of the penalties they kill off Dylan stro right now leading the team with 29 Points uh and that includes a plus 1777 plus minus which ties him with Rasmus sandine for the team lead oetkin has 15 goals but again he’s out of the line up Conor McMichael 13 goals right behind him Logan Thompson and Charlie lingren have been splitting the goal tending Thompson 91 and one a 244 goals against average and a 917 save percentage lingren five5 and0 a 264 goals against and a 901 save percentage if they are going to continue to alternate that means that the Islanders would almost certainly be facing Logan Thompson in this game the line combinations as of late for the Caps Dylan stro uh alexe protus and Tom Wilson are the top line Pierre Luke Dubois Conor McMichael and Taylor radish of the second line lar Zeller centers Hendrick laier and Andrew mananga pone uh on the third line and then on the fourth line from left to right Brandon duim Nick Dow and Ivan Miro shenko Martin far harvery and John Carlson of the top defense pair Rasmus sandine and Matt Matt Roy the second pair Jacob Chan and Trevor van ramdy of the third pair and as I mentioned the goalies Lindgren and Thompson Nicholas bam TJ Oshi Sunny Milano and Alexander oetkin are all on IR then we turn to Saturday and it’ll be a 7:30 Eastern Time start at UBS arena for the Buffalo Sabers the sabes like the Islanders will be playing Friday afternoon as well so they’re hosting the Vancouver Canucks then uh they just had their three-game losing streak ended by the Minnesota Wild Buffalo right now is 1110 and one heading into that game against Vancouver they are 12th in goals scored 17th and goals allowed power play 21st in the league the penalty kill is 12th ukap peka Lucan is the starting goalie uh and we’ll see you know who ends up playing on uh Saturday now Lucan played their last game so it really will be up to the coaching staff as to whether or not they want him to play Friday against Vancouver or Saturday against the Islanders Alex tuck Rasmus Dalene and Tage Thompson are the top three scorers in points for the Buffalo Sabers the line combinations Thompson JJ Patera and Alex tuck are the top line Dylan cousins Zack Benson and pton Krebs are the second line line Yuri kulich Jason zooker and Zach Jack Quinn are the third line and then the fourth line is Ryan McLoud centering Beck malinen and Sam laferty on defense Rasmus dalen and Bowen BR uh Byam are the top pair Owen power and HRI yokahu are the second pairing and then Jacob Bryson and Connor Clifton are the third pair the goalies uh uh ukah Pekka L Lucan and James Rhymer Tage Thompson dayto day right now we’ll see if he’s ready to come back by Saturday Matias samelson and Jordan Greenway are presently out of the lineup and look these are two teams that if the Islanders want to make the playoffs they’re going to have to pass at least one of them if they can do that they will be in a much better position but you got to get I would say at least two points preferably three in these two games and that will be a challenge for the New York Islanders with all the injuries that they presently have we’re going to talk a little bit about some of the things Islander fans have to be thankful for and there are a bunch of them uh we’ll talk about that we’ll have our Islanders birthday of the day all that and more still to come on today’s locked on Islanders podcast today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel get ready to tackle the NFL podcast Network your team every day so what do Islander fans have to be thankful for and before you get sarcastic and I know you know you can be sarcastic but let’s talk a little bit about you know what what there is for Islander fans to be thankful for let’s start with the fact that the Islanders are still on Long Island that they did not move away that we have a beautiful new Arena uh near Belmont Park that guarantees that this team will be sticking around for a long time we also definitely can be thankful for some of the great people that are part of the Islanders organization guys like Anders Lee Brock Nelson Oliver walstrom uh you know I could go through Matt Martin I I I can go through almost the entire roster so many of these guys are just good people who are involved in the community who have given their heart and soul to the New York Islanders organization and that has been really great to see and you know whether they can win enough to make us happy in that respect or not I have to be happy with the way they’ve been involved and been a part of the Long Island community and the effort that they put out for years on the ice so I am thankful for that I am certainly also thankful for the fact that this team has a very rich tradition that the dynasty years and even to expand it let’s say the years between 1975 and 1987 where this team was one of the elite teams of all time 19 straight playoff series four straight Stanley Cups five straight Stanley Cup Final appearances these are records that in the salary cap era will likely never be burn broken that it would be almost impossible for a team in this day and age to match what the Islanders did and how many of those players stuck around whether it’s Bobby nrom who still lives in the area Clark Gillies who passed away a couple of years ago but again stayed in the area and was a part of the community how you know what what those players the tracher the Mike bossies the Billy Smiths the Dennis po bans what they meant and what they brought to Long Island we right now only have one major league team on Long Island and that’s the New York Islanders other places may represent New York City Queens Brooklyn in the case of the Nets heck the the two New York area NFL teams actually play in New Jersey so to have one team that specifically represents Long Island I think is a very very special thing and I have to be happy about that and the memories and the Legacy that those great teams of the past gave to us I’m thankful for the community that we have I’m thankful that I get to do this podcast and inter act with all of you I I am thankful for the fact that we have a great group of people who you know send in comments on YouTube and attend premieres and email me and ask me questions I really do love talking hockey with all of you and being able to do this show all year round five days a week uh has been a pure joy for me and I I I am enjoying every minute of it and I am very thankful for that uh I’m thankful for the fact that you know we’ve got still a lot of hockey left this season even if this team can be frustrating to watch at times but you know even when they’re struggling they are our team and uh I’m thankful that they’re still here and then we get to root them in every day all right time now for our Islanders birthday of of the day and well basically today is uh the 59th birthday of former Islanders Winger Ari haanpaa Haan paa a fourth round pick of the Islanders in 1984 joined the Isles in 8586 after playing in Finland he’s a native of noia Finland I hope I’m pronouncing that right 61 185 pounds played uh parts of three seasons on the island before heading back to Europe playing in Finland and then briefly in Austria and Germany his best season with the Isles 41 games six goals 10 points in 1986 87 he also played in six playoff games and had 10 penalty minutes in those games all of his NHL career was with the Islanders six goals 17 points in 60 games one of his better games as an Islander March 10th 1987 at the old igloo in Pittsburgh Islanders visiting the Penguins it’s Kelly Rudy against Jill malash in goal for Pittsburgh and in this game our Islanders birthday of the day ARA andaa sets up a goal by moo MAA in the second period that tied the game at 111 and then ends up scoring a goal in the third period that put the Islanders ahead four to one Mike bossy and Randy Boyd had the assist it was the fifth goal for hot and paa of the Year Islanders go on to win this game by a score of six to3 and Ari h and paa a goal and assist he was a plus one he scored the game winner and he had two shots on goal in this game by the way in this game Brian tracher four assists Richard crom a goal and two helpers for the Islanders and uh Kelly Rudy 20 saves Islanders out shoot Pittsburgh 24 to 23 so uh Ari Haan paa is our Islanders birthday of the day I want to thank everyone who makes lockdown Islanders your first listen every day we’ll be back
