MLB Trade Rumors: Cubs, Reds Among Landing Spots for White Sox’s Garrett Crochet
Mike Chiari
The Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds are reportedly in the mix to acquire pitcher Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox in an offseason trade.
According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the Cubs and Reds are both “viable candidates” to land the 2024 All-Star.
After serving exclusively as a reliever over his first three MLB seasons, the 25-year-old Crochet had a breakout year as a starter in 2024, emerging as one of the few bright spots for a White Sox team that was one of the worst in league history with a 41-121 record.
Making 32 starts, Crochet went 6-12 with a 3.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 209 strikeouts over 146 innings pitched.
There was plenty of smoke regarding a Crochet trade leading up to last season’s deadline, but once the White Sox decided to hang onto him, they put him on a strict pitch count for the remainder of his starts.
Despite limiting his pitches and innings, Crochet’s 146 innings pitched last season were a career high by far. His previous career high at the Major League level was 54.1 innings, all of which came out of the bullpen.
The 2020 No. 11 overall draft pick missed the entire 2022 season due to Tommy John surgery before returning to appear in 13 MLB games in 2023.
After showing last season that he could handle a larger workloadโand now being another year removed from Tommy JohnโCrochet could be in line for a huge leap forward in 2025.
In 2024, the Cubs went 83-79 for a second consecutive season, and they have now gone four straight years without a playoff appearance.
Starting pitching was one of the Cubs’ greatest strengths last season, as Justin Steele, Shota Imanaga, Jameson Taillon and Javier Assad all posted a sub-4.00 ERA.
The Cubs already signed Matt Boyd to a two-year, $29 million contract in free agency this offseason, so while starting pitching is far from a major need, Crochet would give them arguably the deepest and best starting rotation in the league.
As for the Reds, they went 77-85 last season and have missed the playoffs four years in a row, much like the Cubs.
The Reds have some young, high-end starting pitching talent with Hunter Greene leading the way, followed by Nick Lodolo, Andrew Abbott, Rhett Lowder and others.
While Cincinnati lost veteran starter Frankie Montas in free agency, it re-signed Nick Martinez with the apparent intent of making him a full-time starter, and it also acquired starter Brady Singer in a trade that sent infielder Jonathan India to the Kansas City Royals.
Greene, Singer, Martinez, Lodolo, Abbott, Lowder and Graham Ashcraft give the Reds no shortage of solid starting pitching options, but Crochet could provide an upgrade, especially if at least one of those pitchers is part of a trade package going back to the White Sox.

so we spent time on the Reds yesterday because there were some rumors and reports circulating that the Reds and Jesse Winker could potentially reunite and we we shared our thoughts on on on that possibility we knew that the Reds were going to be looking to add uh you know an outfielder or you know an upgrade with you know with you know a hitter chesse Winker doesn’t necessarily give you all the warm fuzzy feelings inside of them elevating the roster to the next level uh but we figured hey you know you go get singer uh and then of course you obviously get the deal done with Nick Martinez thought maybe that they’re done tinkering with the pitching at this point we thought the next thing that we would hear from the Reds is any activity regarding going to add a bat and an outfielder well wake up I woke up earlier this morning and it sounds like there are two teams according to John marosi and again I know La you touched on this during headlines but the reds are one of two teams in the mix to get Garrett crochet from the from the white socks that’s a big name that that’s a huge uh addition to a rotation that already has obviously hunter green a Sai Young Contender right there a Nick ldo a singer a Nick Martinez you know obviously Andrew Abbott as of right now um you know and you you just look down the list they have a lot of depth when it comes to this rotation were you surprised after all the activity that we’ve seen from the Reds when it comes to upgrading this pitching staff or at least adding more depth are you surprised that they may not be done tinkering with this rotation Garrett crochet again that’s the news we woke up to this morning that the reds are one of two teams along with the Cubs that are in on the Starley I am a little shocked I didn’t think they would do this and they still might not but I also didn’t think they’d do the singer deal so good for the Cincinnati Reds if their goal is to build a rotation that’s Unstoppable I can get down with that if if if you look at next year and say maybe we we don’t hit on every offensive bat and they really don’t the Reds have been very very bad at signing free agent bats Nick casos being the one exception over 25 years if if you’re able to cocked and build an elite rotation that nobody’s going to touch that’s an equal that’s an equal playing field at least in my mind that’s where your offense doesn’t have to be superheroes every night and you can you don’t have to score five runs six runs a game you can do the three-run thing and you can win three to one you can win ugly like the Milwaukee Brewers have been doing for seemingly 10 years now I love it I I I love it I’m shocked by it I don’t again I have I have doubts on whether this will actually come to fruition but it if it if it were to happen it would be legitimately a a division-winning move this would like I don’t I don’t know what my expectations are for the Reds and as we get closer to the season we’ll talk about it but my expectations as of right this very second or maybe maybe fight for the playoffs like that’s like that’s what it is if they do this move if you get crochet and you make a rotation that’s not hitable I’m going to say they that’s a division-winning move they they’re good enough to win the division because if you go one through five down the rotation it is stacked it really is and that’s not even knowing if Nick Martinez is a Bonafide starter if he’s a relief pitcher uh to start the season or the guy we took it two overall in the draft Yeah so I I I love it I mean if this were to happen I’d fall in love with this move I’d love the Cincinnati Reds and I’d be very very high on the Reds winning the division in 202 five trade is our best hope at getting a massive name like this we’ve talked about it the whole time especially yesterday with the Jesse Winker conversation there’s not a real world where the reds are in play for one of the big Jesus Christ Reed outside the window outside the studio making faces this time didn’t expect that one but yeah no you uh you don’t expect the Reds to ever be in the mix for players like this I mean we talked about teoscar Hernandez we talked about uh Anthony santand the chances that the Reds put 20 $30 million into a position player in free agency that’s near zero but to move some of the farm to move some of the young players and get these bigname players in a trade that’s our best chance to to Really bolster this team bolster this rotation and hopefully at some point bolster this lineup because as much as I would love the Reds to have an unhitable rotation and how great that would be to add Garett crochet and as happy as I would be going into the season with the rotation with him in it this kind of feels like if the Bengals end this season and just go all in on the offense yeah it’s like we we lost a bunch of games scoring 38 let’s try to score 50 and see what happens it’s like that doesn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense to me if that’s the only option but we also sit here and talk about how we should resign T Higgins and then put money into the defense so going to bolster the pitching staff does make sense to me it’s something the Reds absolutely needed to do but they can’t do this and go into the season and say hey look we made the pitching staff incredible and it’s the same lineup as last year I my thing is though if they’re going to make all these moves they’re going to make moves side I agree it’s just every big move they’ve been linked to and made so far it’s been pitching I think you I think if you and again this is just this is hypothetical but if you’re able to have this pitching staff and make it as good as humanly possible I don’t think the offense has to be the best in the league it’s it literally is the Bengals thing right it’s the exact same thing don’t have to be the best just can’t the worst were they the worst last year they were pretty damn near the bottom but I I I think that if you’re able to build this kind of rotation I I’m going to have confidence that you’re going to be able to win games because it’s not going to take as much you’re going to be able to squeak out one nothing wins and and that last year didn’t happen the Reds weren’t able to win those one-run games so making his pitching as good as humanly possible helps those one- Run games so and Jake I’m love the the Bengals comparison there because that’s what I I had in my notes because the the point I was going to make was similar to Cincinnati is when you look at the Reds they have a lot of holes that they need to address the Bengals have a lot of holes that they need to address and you could try to address as many of those holes as possible and improve gradually or you can look at where your strengths are and lean as heavily into that as possible because the Bengals will not fix all of their problems in one offseason coming up the reds are not going to fix all like we I I think we have this perception that man all right Terry frankone is here the reds are going to go all in and they’re just going to go get every big name that you could think of I think that there will be levels to this I think that you know the I I mean I was impressed with the singer deal I was surpris not surprised but I was happy that they pulled that deal pulled the trigger on that deal you get the thing done um and I I think that this could be the offseason of hey we might get Jesse Winker just uh improve slightly you know with the hitting outfielder but then we’re going to lean heavily into pitch and then I could see next off seon B where they lean heavily into the hitting because at the same time I do think there’s a lot of question marks like to say okay they were bad last year defensively remember still a very young roster very young roster and I think right now this was a team two years ago that was supposed to lose a 100 games then they got ahead of schedule and when you get ahead of schedule that also speeds up your decision-making process of what you have so you think you have something really good one year then you look at last year and you’re questioning a lot of things especially defensively and just how good is Christian and caros and strand can Matt mlan stay healthy I could see a scenario where Jesse Winker might be it and that every other big move is what they do on the pitching side see what you’re working with to start the season maybe make a big move at the treade deadline and then make bigger moves in the offseason next year I don’t know I I I just don’t think that they’re going to make so many big moves all at one time to fix the or improve pitching and improve defense and improve the lineup I think they’re going to do what you talked about potentially what this move signals to me is we’re going to lean heavily into our strength pitching was already something they were very solid at last year they don’t want to be solid at pitching they want to be great at pitching what’s the identity of the Reds not very good defensively they have La deight Cruz and they have a young core that’s exciting uh and goes on hot stretches but damn it we are going to be a team to reckon with when it comes to our pitching that’s going to be the identity of the Reds if they pull something like this off I already think they’re very good pitching wise as it is this would just move them up to that upper Eon um even without getting crochet guys where the Reds have a top what pitching staff in your eyes the red is it a top 10 where where they at with I think it’s definitely top I think it’s definitely top 10 in my in my eyes it’s 100% top 10 you get crochet what would that move you into with top five where we at with that I think I think I think you’re getting damn close to top five I don’t know if you’re in top five depending on how these two young W Force kids pan out you might be sitting at one I’d still I I have to see I have to see what happens this year I I I the preseason stuff I can sit here and say top five top 10 I got to see it a little bit what singers got no no cuz when you see it you might have to admit that they’re not the best yeah I guess you’re right maybe I should just say it um but yeah it certainly makes the red it makes the Reds a threat I mean crochet ldo abbit louder and then hope midseason take Abbot out you put it in freaking Chase Petty yeah I mean I would I would say a a trade oh I forgot Brady singer singer well to be fair a trade for crochet would probably be one of the a loss of I’d imagine abbit I’d imagine one of them would would leave uho throw in a certain outfielder I yeah I would do it the Jesse Winker thing is is utter nonsense I I’ve actually had time I I know I said yesterday I wouldn’t be mad I actually would be mad because it’s such it’s such a minimal upgrade that it’s not even worth the contract you have will Benson you have Jake fry I don’t need three of the same exact human beings no disrespect to any of them I really like Jake fry I think Jake fry had a down year last year I think he dealt with a lot of stuff this year I think he’s going to be better I think he’s going to be the player that we brought him here to be I think will Benson unfortunately his time with the Reds is is on thin ice he didn’t play good last year you gave him every opportunity in the world he won in that bats against lefties he got him he wanted to play more he got it every single opportunity he had last year he squandered and this season I have a hard time believing I can trust him I don’t know what Jesse Winker does to this at all I he’s a bad Defender um and he hits home runs every once in a while I I think he’s a fine offensive player but at the end of the day I I want a guy out there that plays consistently every day that’s who I want I don’t even care if it’s the world’s best outfielder I just need somebody who consistently is out there contributing to the team that’s what I want will Benson took away from the team last season he struck out 40% of the time so uh that’s that’s that’s where I would say about making an offensive move you still need to make an offensive upgrade but to kenner’s point the question marks are there to a point where if you didn’t add anybody and this is a hypothetical if you didn’t add anybody there are there’s still at least some level of a of an understanding that maybe those guys could get better because you have enough as of right now you have the spots all filled out it’s just are those spots going to be good enough is jamier candelario g to be good this year is CES going to be good this year can Matt mlan stay healthy this year TJ Fredo Spencer steer can all these guys what’s Noel V Marte doing is he off the juice I don’t know is he on the juice is he on the juice we don’t know I I want to see it this year and if and if we go with kenner’s method which I don’t think is terrible I don’t think it would be the worst thing in the world to build one of the most elite pitching staffs in the league and then see what you have offensively because this is a Make It or Break It year at least in my eyes with some of these prospects no question about it we’ll see what Matt mlan does we’ll see what CES does I think CES in my humble opinion if he’s unable to figure it out this year I would have a hard time trusting him in 2026 that’s just my thought at this very second I know they’re all young I get the young thing I get the youth but you have to now capitalize on a pitching rotation that you’re paying a lot of money and is very very good so I would want one I want one offensive player I want one good offensive player not named Jesse Winker to help the pitching staff if you’re if you’re able to get this trade we then we’ll talk if the trade involves Luis Robert then we’ll talk but as of right now yeah that move makes the Reds pitching rotation in the top five you you mentioned the hypothetical that was going to be my next question is you know what if they do get this crochet deal done and then that’s it they don’t make one single move the rest of the off season I would still be very pleased I still think that they considering the limitations that we knew the limitations that could potentially exist of course when you look at the fact that they uh you know with the TV deal as we mentioned on yesterday show if they got this crochet deal done and didn’t add any depth you know with the lineup or defensively or anything like that I would still be very very pleased to go get the best manager that was available uh to to replace David Bell with the best manager available uh to go get two uh MLB ready pitchers and not have a an entire rotation of prospects that are you know in their first couple years in the league and still trying to learn the league I think it would be a great balance uh as far as that goes but I would like to see them get another player for the outf another outfielder of course but if they pulled this off that’d be great the last thing on this the message it sends like because that regardless of whether they pull it it off we are starting to learn what the front office is thinking to be fair this front office has always been very aggressive with pitching if you go back to I I know Nick Nick crawl’s been a part of this for quite some time Dick Williams was a part of this years ago but they’ve always been super aggressive when the castolin have been willing to Fork over money they go and get that trade done for sunny gray they were willing to get the trade done uh to to you know to go trade uh with the with the Indians at the time um why am I drawn to blank sa young winner for the Reds I do this every single show where I draw blank uh Power they go get Trevor Bower like they’ve been aggressive with pitching anytime that they’ve been ready to Fork over money and we’re seeing it right now that’s the message to me is the front office is saying okay we’re ready we got we got our manager we’re ready to make aggressive moves this would be aggressive and this would put them like Elliot just talked about into that top five conversation with rotations which should be good enough to contend and win that division we thought this team was good enough to win the division last year some people Mo a lot of uh you you know a lot of the the the national media guys out there really thought that this team was good enough to win the Division and that’s without these two pitchers that they could potentially be having so we’ll see what happens I’d be in I’d certainly be in and if the if the front office is able to give me some confidence the ability to think that they’re going to spend money and and try and work hard and and still have that saying that they made all those years ago work looking to build bring Championship baseball back to Cincinnati if you’re able to make me believe that again I will be very very happy and this is a big step uh to that I would say say I think they’re desperate I think for the first time in in quite some time the front office is is is a little bit desperate and we’ll see if that equates to making good moves if if it equates to to winning baseball games but I’m excited to see what it’s going to be and I didn’t think I’d have that feeling in December of this year when I was talking about the Reds and uh you know whatever that month was August I when we were talking about the Reds in August I thought truly the Reds had lost everything you know you don’t know what these prospects are anymore uh who do you really have on this team who’s the manager going to be yada y yada and now it does feel like there might be a an identity and I’m I’m excited to see what that is agree that this is a crossroad season and we’re going to have to make some decisions here about the future of this organization and the future of the team and see what happens now and and how to move forward because you’re going to have to capitalize on this group of young stars and Terry Fran cona as the manager you you absolutely have to get something out of this window because it’s the stars aligning as much as they really can for a small Market team so it’s nice to at least hear that they’re connected to to these deals with these big name players that can really help and the willingness to move Jonathan India for a Brady singer and stuff like that moves that we don’t necessarily expect from the Reds but but kind of changing the the mold of the franchise to go all in in a window that uh that you know you can at least have a chance to win in which is great and I love to see it I would like to see a little bit more than just connections though I’d like to see this one go through the net that’d be that’d be nice for sure
