[Music] hey there Gary Parish welcome back to the CBS Sports I on college basketball podcast where we sometimes discuss camell fighting dodo birds leaky Black Matt norlander is here with me if you’re you’re here let’s get into it first things first uh norlander you’re back here uh in the continental United States as I think most folks know you were out in Maui covering the Maui Invitational it was your first trip out to the Maui Invitational it’s a bucket list trip for uh for many did it meet your expectations it did it did I talked a little bit about a lot of it I guess on my uh Salt Lake City pot but it was uh it was a really good time um I would love to uh to cover it again actually having gone out there I did tell my tell my wife and kids when I got home uh I’m pretty determined to at one point go back out to Hawaii and just get to experience that um it was I did didn’t have nearly enough time to do what I do what I wanted to do and kind of taking the sights my brother and father went my brother got in around to golf uh so he had my Envy there but it was uh it was a really good time and I really enjoyed myself uh I got to shoot on those famed Maui rims uh it was I guess after Tuesday night everyone had kind of left I had filed my stories and there was like two people still cleaning up the gym and I was like tell me they didn’t lock the storage door and they didn’t so I got about 10 minutes worth of shots up there but it was it was a it was a really cool time and I’ll I’ll have a story I think that’s going to go up Saturday now on just um what the event meant to get it back and then what Maui’s future is can they continue to have strong Fields um the organizers are confident in that um you talked to some coaches and they’re less enthused to maybe continue to do Maui in the current format will it change I’m told it’s not going to change for at least the next at least the next two years and probably uh three seasons but we’ll see but it was it was awesome uh had Duke Arizona not played I would have loved to have gotten there one day earlier and just you know gotten to see like I didn’t do people have asked did you do the road to Hana that’s on the other side of the island didn’t get the chance to do to do any of that stuff but Maui was incredible the beaches absolutely live up to all the hype and uh for though I didn’t explain this on the uh the early early morning Thanksgiving show if you’re wondering where all the teams stay and GP knows this I actually stayed at at a really actually tremendous Airbnb that was just behind one of the properties and right next to the golf course it was it was the Vista was phenomenal um but they have GP they must have 10 hotel resorts all next to each other along this uh kopali Beach area and so some like Michigan State I want to say maybe Dayton I’m going to mix the schools up but anyway those those schools are in one hotel and then like all the way at the other end uh Yukon was at the same hotel as maybe color Iowa State and I can’t remember who else and um and so you can kind of Bounce from one to the other the other although if you were going to walk that that’s that’s definitely going to take you probably a good 40 minutes to walk it so the the the hotels and the resorts and everything on the beach there is really cool you got restaurants down there um yeah it was a it was a wonderful time yeah it’s funny you mention um wanting to go back um and you know talking to your wife and kid that that is my it’s not my main memory but I remember having this thought while I was there like I shouldn’t be here by myself like I shouldn’t be here and I know you were with your father and your brother but like I felt a little like this is too night amazing like my wife should be here my kids should be here um if I do go back I will take them with me because it it’s and I like you I got out there and I really just did basketball stuff I got out there and I went to press conferences and I did podcast and I wrote columns and I didn’t do any of the stuff you’re supposed to do when you go visit an incredible place like that so I would like to go back it it it lives up to expectations for me just walking in The Little Gym for the first time and seeing it it looks like it it looks like it’s like seeing somebody you’ve known your whole life but you but then you have to realize I’ve never actually seen this thing in real life before like like bumping into an bumping into an actor you’ve been watching in movies your entire life like oh I know this person because I’ve seen them every Thanksgiving week yeah but it’s just so it’s just all of that is it’s great it’s a wonder is actually do you remember I when I walked in it actually looks a don’t get me wrong it’s still small it actually felt a little bigger in person than it looks on TV in TV it really looks like a bandbox it’s a little bigger than that but don’t get me wrong it it is uh it is pretty small and it’s also it’s it’s darker in person is well lit don’t get but on the TV the natural the lighting that they they provided it actually makes it look like it’s uh it’s got a little more uh uh in-house lighting than it actually has it it was cool to finally see that perspective in person as all so Auburn wins it um beats Memphis in the title game 976 BP’s tigers are now seven and0 got wins over Houston Iowa State North Carolina Memphis that’s four wins over top 35 Kim pom teams including two victories over top 10 Kim pom teams um I know you are on record you think this is the best team in the country I’m not here to argue with you but make your case uh they have I mean well okay let’s let’s let me let me ping pong it right back to you here they they got to have the best resume in the country right now they have defeated Houston Iowa State North Carolina and Memphis the the latter three obviously being on neutrals and then Houston not technically a road game but in effect a road game in addition to that they’ve beaten fromont probably going to make the tournament albe it from a low Major League um took out Kent State in north Alabama uh they’re going to go against Duke next we’ll see if they get the win there or not I I don’t think anyone can fight Auburn on the claim that it has the best resume in the country so I would say having seen how they play what they look like having the the best player in the sport so far and statistically that’s not arguable at this point at least according to Ken palom um I actually am going to connect the fact that having seen them combined with what they’ve accomplished they’ve got to be the best team because I don’t think you can ARG against them having the best resume I agree you can’t argue with them having the best resume um they you know I just laid it out and as somebody who looks at this stuff every day you’re not going to find one better than that so I guess the next question from Auburn fans certainly would be then why don’t you have him ranked number one in the top 25 and one dummy and the reason is because I I genuinely don’t believe in the first three plus weeks four weeks of the Season you can strictly evaluate on body of work because people schedule differently people have scheduled um some have had more challenging schedules than others um some will have uh really challenging novembers light December others will have really light November challenging Decembers um the truth is I started with Kansas at number one Kansas is like Auburn also undefeated I don’t think Kansas can match Auburn win for win like I know they can’t right but they do have a win over Duke they’ve got a win over uh North Carolina they’ve got a win over Michigan State they’ve still got a zero in the Lost column so for now I’ll just keep Kansas with a strong resume even if it’s not as strong as Auburn’s but based on where I thought they should be in the preseason and they’ve done nothing to move me off of that Kansas W Auburn too but yes I if if this were if today were the day the selection committee unveils the first you know top 16 seeds I don’t think there’s any question Auburn would be the number one overall seed uh we’re going to talk about this again on Wednesday but what the hell I’m just going to put it on you right now um Auburn plays at Duke Wednesday yeah and K I think plays at kraton on Wednesday let me bring that up real quick here Kansas is at kraton Wednesday they both win those games would you be willing to then jump Auburn over Kansas I mean the kraton we gotta see we’re gonna talk kraton before we get out of here as well kraton’s a little bit in we’ll see I I think if that were to happen GP even if Kansas won uh I know that would mean what a third loss for Duke uh at that point I think you might have to break away from the preseason ranking others would um I wouldn’t okay fight him on it I don’t think that I would um because because right then Kansas would be coming off of a win at kraton I agree Auburn you know if if if Kansas loses at kraton then it’s you know we don’t have a decision to make but like Kansas would be coming off a win at kraton I know kraton has struggled we’ll get to them um in the final four and one but I I I don’t Envision Moving Kansas out of number one unless Kansas until Kansas loses it’s not like theyve played nobody you know they do have some big wins and they were my preseason number one I don’t want to say you know um I’d never do it under any circumstances because I believe I have um the the Duke year with Zion and RJ whoever I had preseason number one that year after Duke beat kuy’s brains in and looked like oh my God this is a monster I I do remember moving Duke to number one even though my preseason number one had not lost yet but I don’t Envision that doing that this season I don’t think so if Kansas long as Kansas got a zero in the Lost column I will probably keep them there of No um Kansas right now at Ken palom obviously still factoring in plenty of preseason projection uh KU is seven if you filter it out at torva KU is nine Auburn’s two Tennessee is actually one based on efficiency but results in who you play also has to matter uh in this discussion in my opinion and so I would bump Auburn ahead of Tennessee but torvi right now is Tennessee 1 Auburn 2 Houston 3 D Duke yeah you heard me right Duke even with two losses sitting there at four Gonzaga 5 Kentucky 6 hello to the Cincinnati Bearcats at seven again this is torvic not no preseason bias only efficiency numbers based on competition so far Illinois and then KU but um if you filter out and go winds above bubble right now it is it is it is Auburn uh Far and Away uh standup uh standup state of Alabama because it’s Auburn and Bama One Two in terms of quality of resume then Memphis and then Marquette I want to talk to about Yukon the Huskies went into the Maui Invitational as the favorite and ranked second in the AP poll they come out of their 0 and3 record they finished eighth in the event we’ll do that next but first let’s get a word from our [Music] [Applause] partners so Yukon enter the Mau Invitational as the favorite they walk out of there 0 and three um and it wasn’t just like you know any 0 and3 in any event is bad unless you’re shamod maybe then it’s just like whatever but 0 and3 is bad almost regardless of the context it’s especially bad when it’s 0 and3 against three unranked teams now I know Memphis might be ranked come Monday in the AP poll but at the time these games were played it’s the back-to-back Champs 0 and three against three unranked schools um including one that was picked second in the AAC again these are just facts listen long season still early all that stuff do you believe yukon’s still a legitimate candidate to threee okay now there’s the question uh no one can say it look like that coming out of Maui uh no it’s hard to get there can they correct enough to you know be a big East Contender I do think that is the case yes but a lot of the Yukon preseason I didn’t talk about this on the on the Thursday show by the way if you’re dialed in live after Thanksgiving appreciate you if you want more like I don’t know nitty-gritty Maui stuff check out the Thursday one with me on less than an hour of plane sleep from the Salt Lake City airport that was that was one for the books uh but I appreciate everyone that checked it in uh but I did not talk about this in particular thing so I appreciate GP bringing it up and then I want to ask Parish about Hurley’s um we already know uh I I I do believe that they’ve got you can’t deny the quality and the IQ and everything on that coaching staff that’s been well established and proven at this point but they were given the benefit of the doubt in the preseason based on what they had done the previous two seasons and now we have seen what Yukon isn’t and what it isn’t is a good defensive team at least not yet so now in order to put them back into that Championship Contender category they’ve got a lot of do a lot of work to to build up for that now as I mentioned on Thursday’s show they do have plenty of opportunities man this can really work in its favor or we’ll see but uh I I gotta believe you agree with me GP they they don’t uh fit the bill and they wouldn’t and shouldn’t be considered even among the um 10 most likely or practical candidates to win a championship in 2025 yeah the early returns are not encouraging um you know I think Dan told you that they’re all a little stunned you know sort of shell shocked by this they didn’t anticipate this um that that seemed to come straight through the television as well like you know what is happening why are we losing again like you on that note real quick yeah because I’m watching it live I’m not watching the broadcast so I within the first three plays on Monday like I’m like what’s he doing like I’m just thinking and I’m like I’m like already like we’re doing this already because I had spent time here’s the thing I had spent time with Yukon Sunday Monday I went there last week and so like I got some good scenery and he was he was hurly Hurley was Hurley but um and I was with Hurley in the locker room literally as he was walking out to the floor like writing a Bible verse on his like some scenes that I just didn’t put in my story like writing a Bible verse on his wrist and doing different little rituals and taking on the bracelets and taking off the bracelets and giving him time but we talked a little bit before that and you know the pregame raw raw speech wasn’t you know it was it was you know it was a it was typical coach speak and then within three possessions I’m like okay we’ll see and then it gets within three minutes it gets even worse and then I start seeing people noticing that he’s on camera and so from your Vantage Point GP yeah I guess it it really did like it was on ESPN so the ESPN directors they they caught on to it that was that was surprising um he wasn’t I actually inquired about this I’m trying to give you some stuff that I didn’t give you on yesterday’s show I asked if like if anyone went to Yukon because there’s an on-site officiating coordinator I was like did anyone go to Yukon or Hurley and talk to him about this they didn’t and and they didn’t have to but I was just curious and I was wondering if Hurley went to the officiating coordinator and said anything he did not uh but uh but Bruce Pearl did so um Hurley had that uh Avenue available to him if he wanted to he decided not to take it he decided instead to voice his concerns to the media uh and to me really harshly on Monday and Tuesday um in addition to just in addition to the press conference and the press conference bit was a was a big one um I wanted to give Dan the the leeway to be like all right let’s continue talking about this but if you want to not make it about the officials and more about the team have at it and he decided to really not take that route he still wanted to to lean in on the officiating so I was I’m going along here GP I’m sorry but I was taken back by how it was just instant and it’s why I think he told me after the Colorado loss he was like I did think losing at that point was two games it wasn’t three at that point they hadn’t played Dayton he knew that losing at least to in Maui was a real possibility and he had not vocalized that yet um but his body language and response to the officials within you know the first 10 possessions on Monday indicated just how uh perhaps insecure the lack of confidence he had in his team yeah um you know the team stuff is I mean it doesn’t look good and and then you dive into the numbers and it’s not good you mentioned you know if you remove preseason bias at torvic um you you you you got to scroll pretty far down to find UK I don’t know where they are 64th they are so you remove pre you remove preseason bias they’re 64th in the country with an offense that ranks 13th and a defense that ranks 29th in the country um there are a lot of issues but when you lose for NBA players four starters four NBA players you’ve got to make sure the guys you’re bringing in to replace them can play and Aiden mahey right now can’t play like he’s supposed to be an important player and he’s not he has gone from starting and playing 23 minutes in the season opener to coming off the bench and only getting six minutes in a span of seven games against Colorado zero points in six minutes against Dayton zero points in eight minutes and you know he didn’t I know you know he didn’t have a good season last season at he did not he did not I know he was like a freshman thing like oh boy St Mary has got a freshman man and he was a top 100 player he was really good and he came back last year and he wasn’t as good and now he doesn’t look like it it’s the wrong way you know college careers are supposed to go like this yeah like this I know he’s going the wrong way he’s also like he’s a slighter player he’s never I he’s not physically imposing he’s not gonna be elite Defender they had such good defensive presence on the perimeter last season even the season before and they had cling and they don’t have anymore but I think Johnson can be serviceable enough obviously in that realm but uh yeah they just they don’t they don’t have it right now and I did I did think that what Hurley said Wednesday I had left it was at the presser um where he was like I feel like the pressure of having to wear this uniform is too much on these guys I can relate that to what Luke Murray said during the Sunday night film session where he was basically like laid it out to him where he was like you know we’ve had easy opponents to this point and when you come to this school like there is an absolute standard that when you put on this uniform you are doing it based on the greatness that has achieved before you so that you can be in line with it like they were just laying it out for like we’re going to play Memphis tomorrow and you got to realize how ready that team is going to be to want to kick your ass and you chose to wear this uniform so you better be ready for it and then now having them seeing them lost three in a row and hurle admitting it he’s like yeah there’s there’s something wrong with the psyche and our defense is absolute ass at this point so we have to go back and fix it and to me Auburn’s the best team um but here we are two days from the end of November it can’t be anything else Yukon going 0 and3 in Maui to me is the biggest story in college basketball no question um and you know it’s easy to say we got to go fix it and obviously like if you need a coaching set to to fix something like that that’s that’s the one you’d probably pick to try to fix it right they’re excellent across the board they they’ve proven themselves but if you want to keep this as simple as you can keep it when we keep talking about the back-to-back Champs one thing the back-to-back Champs had that this team doesn’t is both teams had Donovan kingan in the middle Rim protecting yeah and and one team had Andre Jackson on the perimeter and the other one had Stefan Cass and both teams had Tristan Newton who has quietly just got the job done man yeah but I’m talking strictly on the defensive end you had a lock down perimeter Defender and Clingan Rim protecting both of those teams had that they were different teams but they both had that this team has neither and so far it’s a problem they’ll clearly get better I think but um you know they got a they got quite a ways to go to look like legitimate uh three Peak contenders as for Dan’s sideline Behavior I never want to make this out like this is a crisis in the world and whatever you’re going to say like I get to me I wrote it I get it if and he if he keeps it up listen we’ll probably slam him for it it is a good thing for college basketball that he acts like a maniac because people get interested they want to tweet about it they want to respond to it they want to criticize him they want to kill him for it I will take this over no offense to Dana Alman but I I will take it over that and yes can there be something in the middle yeah we have plenty of guys in the middle but it is a good thing for college basketball that the two time reigning National Championship coach can sometimes look like a lunatic and we get two and a half minute mashups posted to social media not a bad thing for the sport you cannot like it I get it but it is going to create interest it will create topics on shows and people although you may say you don’t like it you love to respond to it and so I have no issue with Hurley continuing to be his natural authentic self while also acknowledging this can become a genuine issue I I had people texting me in Maui being like this guy is he hurts himself so significantly by doing this stuff you can’t the tail is old as coaching time don’t ask your team to remain composed and then go and do that going after the rest for 40 minutes I completely get it go ahead there there’s a million different ways to be a successful coach in any sport um some men and women have done it this way others have done it much more quietly um you know I I I’m not here to say that one is clearly better than the other I know which one I prefer I know which one I would rather be and this was discussed a lot when Dan was interviewing and off you know interviewing with the Lakers offered the Lakers job like how would this work in the NBA and many people said well you know he’ll just have to learn to be different and that is such a dismissive um idea about how this stuff actually works and I say this as somebody who struggles with my emotions as well sometimes you know not not as dramatically as Dan and certainly not on television um but imagine if you on the desk and sports no that would be zook zook zook zook might pop off like that it wouldn’t be me okay get a shot sheet out late see what happens all right but it wouldn’t be to be going I’m with Stover on the desk tonight so that’s that’s oh right okay my favorite my favorite thing ever is the time you you followed Stover on Instagram for like 45 seconds and then looked at it and said I can’t do this it was a bunch of pictures of himself I can’t do that do you know how many times I bring that up to him that was the funniest thing in the world because he cares so deeply about his Instagram like he cares a lot about it I didn’t know that either I and you and you were like you were like oh stu okay because he like probably tagged you in something like norlander in studio tonight and you’re like oh stove I’ll give you a follow and then you I swear to like and this didn’t happen we were all next to each other and you’re like follow and then you start scrolling through and you’re like is this just a bunch of pictures of you this like a of just Brin Stover selfies and then you go I can’t do this and unfollowed immediately and it was my favorite thing that happened in the year most people and stove is amazing obviously fellow guitar player most people think that but they never say it they’re just like I’ll just I’ll just I’ll hang around in quiet follow for four months and then try and sneak out the side door I just I just had to let the worst thing the worst thing in social media is when you you follow somebody with good intentions and then it’s like oh man what did I get into here I get myself into here man oh man I I got so many people muted like that like I followed them because I was trying to be nice to them and then it’s like man I don’t need to know what you know about everything all day long every day you have to be muted you’re muted now they could wish me a happy birthday and I will I’ll never know it’s just muted right so I can’t wait to see you in St Studio night uh uh wow um I struggle with my emotions as well sometimes and I only say this to to to hammer home this point there are times when like let’s say I’ve been out of town for a few days and I’m coming home and you just want like you ain’t seen your kids in a few days and you just want everything to be perfect when you get home right and I’m like listen I know I’ve been out of town they’ve been going running full speed like if the house is a wreck because I’m like I need everything to be organized or else it messes with me like if you could see my studio right now like everything is perfectly in place it has to be or else I get really uncomfortable and these are all conditions and um I could tell myself the way home from the airport I don’t care what this house looks like when I walk in I don’t care what’s going on when I walk in we’re having a good night I’m just happy to be home and I’m doing my best man but if I walk in and there’s like piles of clothes for whatever reason on the dining room table and and and three Target bags from two weeks ago I at some point I’m just gonna I I’ll I can’t help myself I go I go Jesus Christ why is all this just stacked up in here I can’t help it and I say all that to say Dan can all he say all he wants he trying and working but it’s like a real thing that you can’t just turn on and off at some point that’s who you are and you have to do real work to get it under control and again I don’t want to make this out like it’s a crisis because we we’re you know we live in a world where there are actually like real bad things happening Dan Hurley’s sideline behavior is real low on the list but if I were talking to as a friend and he is somebody that I both um en enjoy and admire his success and focus and work ethic like I like Dan Hurley if I were talking them as a friend I would I would just say like this is not how you want to be known and there is a there’s a list of people in this world who are excellent Elite at their chosen professions And yet when you mention those people their names out loud it’s not the first thing people think of is their Excellence when you mentioned bob Knight people the first thing people think of is not one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time they think of him being a crazy person and like on some level a guy who did some bad stuff you know if you want to take it to other Industries K I know he’s a very controversial person Kanye West is one of the greatest creators of music of his generation and perhaps of all time when you say his name out loud that is not the first thing people think of they think of other stuff that that distract and take away from all of the amazing stuff he’s actually done and I would hate for Dan to be known like that I would hate for there to be a Saturday Night Live skit one one one night and it’s about Dan Hurley but it’s not about him being the best basketball coach in the country it’s about him being a maniac on the sidelines I don’t I don’t I wouldn’t I don’t think he would want that to be attached to him and I I I hope he views it that way yeah uh I can guarantee you if he hasn’t already uh he will by the end of the weekend be talking to Billy Donovan who he’s close with and obviously won back-to-back championship and his Florida team followed that up by making the NIT the next season um Hurley would probably rather walk Barefoot to South Dakota and back than than experience uh going to the NIT ever again we’ll see if he can dodge that fate but uh the most recent example we have of this is that Duke W they went back toback wound up making the second round of the tournament and losing to Jason kids Cal team so we will uh we’ll see on that and we’ll see if Hurley can dial it down just a notch again he’s always going to be himself but the the Maui the the great ju toos of the Maui stuff is like you’re you’re out there you’re in this incredible place you’re there to win and compete and and and do all that that’s by far the the biggest objective but it was it was like he had teleported himself back to like his Wagner days when what you saw there was truly just about an every game experience when he was coaching at the low major level and just every single second was a battle to punch up and get up and get up and here he’s on top of the world and I think his Antics uh did acknowledge on a subconscious level just how much work he knew needed to be done with this Yukon team uh we’ll see where the huskys go uh from here but uh again the numbers right now 64th at torvic when you remov the preseason bias 219th and adjusted defensive efficiency they’ve got a a lot of stuff to to clean up a few other things I wanted to touch on before we get to the final four and one want to spend just a couple of uh minutes on some big 10 schools one good one bad let’s start with the good it was uh on CBS America’s most watched network network of stars final score Illinois 90 Arkansas 77 I moved the Ali into the top 25 and one all the way up to to number 17 they’re six and one now they’ve got double digit win over Arkansas the only losses are uh the only losses to Alabama in Alabama um do you know not really a trivia time but I just sort of this is unique Illinois there is something unique about Illinois’s team as it pertains to other top 25 and one teams they are the only top 25 and one team in the country that something attached to them kind of a weird vague one I um I don’t know the only T that uh I don’t even I don’t Yeah just they don’t have they don’t have a they don’t have four out of five returning starters back I don’t know well yeah I mean they well they they lost their top four scores and eight of their top nine I mean they had to totally reload if you wanted to know why I and most people didn’t have Illinois in the preseason rankings it’s because they lost eight of their top nine top scores I had them in mind okay well then you’re clearly the smartest ask Auburn fans they’ll refute that in a in a hurry so yeah you give up your Auburn to take your Illinois what there you go yeah we’ve all got those um everybody talks about Duke’s Youth and Duke’s top two scorers are freshman but not the top three everybody talks about Rucker youth Rucker top two scores were freshman but not the top three at Illinois the top three scores right now are all firste college players one of them is technically a sophomore because he lost a year of Eligibility that’s Thomas slav iich he lost a year of eligibility from the NCAA because he played three seasons in the Adriatic league but he’s in his first year of college basketball will Riley freshman and then uh kasparis yakon is also a freshman from Lithuania the best NBA Prospect of the group but Illinois right now is um ranked 17th in the top 25 on one their top three scores are all first year college players and they looked the part like you know when you lose as much as Brad Underwood lost it is not easy to reload um on the Fly and turn it into a competent basketball team particularly when you’re heavily relying on first your college players but he’s doing it and um that was an impressive showing against Arkansas they we’re up 17 in the first half um led by double digits at the break and then we never seriously threatened in the in the second half at all yeah act Shon us had 23 in that um if you enjoyed yourself some col troops especially with the just dog of a Cowboys Giants game uh running counter to it just a reminder now that we’re in here in uh on Thanksgiving weekend uh this is going to be or at least the plan is for this to be a thing moving forward we’ve had it the past year or two as well but um the plan is we’ll be multiple you know Big Time matchups on Thanksgiving on network television so uh this year we got Illinois coming out of the Bears game do not get me started please don’t get me started on my Bears I can’t believe how you still got how you still got a coach this morning but just sat there watching that on the plane man just it’s a joke uh anyway you got the bear I missed it I missed it in real time because was traveling and then I just because everybody was talking about it I just went to YouTube and I was like let me watch the last minute of this game and and I mean buddy I got a 10y old I got a 10-year-old who plays Madden who knows how to handle that situation better than your head coach Caleb Williams is getting noticeably better by the week which you want to see and ebra flus is giving these games away and the Bears are getting better draft picks because of it I I I’ll take it they didn’t they were never going to make the playoffs again don’t get me started on this but the point is this you had the Bears going into Illinois so you kept a good segment of that fan base there and that was a great one on CBS next year on Fox uh Michigan state will play against North Carolina that’ll come out of the Lions game and um I know of at least one more relatively notable Thanksgiving matchup that is basically agreed to but the stuff isn’t on there so we won’t spoil that just yet but if you like your colge troops and you know particularly on network television in addition to the stuff that we have on other stuff um it’s going to get even bigger and better real quick on Arkansas um the this was my biggest curiosity and concern if you want to call it that Janelle Davis DJ Wagner it’s just not working yet it’s not it’s not being uh uh utilized to whatever maximum ends might be there they’re not prospering I mean Wagner is averaging 8.7 points he’s a 42.7 uh percent shooter and he’s averaging 2.9 assists Davis is 8.4 points a game a 43% shooter uh 4.3 rebounds what you want to see from a guard of his size that’s nice and then two dimes per game so it goes beyond that and and big picture Kyle peris that we talked about in a recent episode and we’ll talk about again and again I’m sure but you had a nice moment on a big stage with the nation watching and you didn’t put up a good performance whatsoever and uh I did have Arkansas ranked in the preseason and that could wind up being a Miss as well we see they’ve got enough talent to get it together but you know same old story with caliper we’ll see I mean it really is it’s the same story I mean they they enroll all these players and you go my God the roster looks good and then you rank them and you know they play seven games and they’re down to 42nd at k p you wonder how long Arkansas is how long it’s gonna take Arkansas fans to get to where Kentucky fans were dude NADA is telling me e flu got fired in the past hour I didn’t even know okay hell yeah this is incredible he did a zoom call this morning which is like so why would the Bears do that bear never fired I’m almost I’m almost positive the Bears have never fired a coach in the middle of the Season thank god well maybe then maybe that’s the explanation that they don’t know how to do this but like let me going forward if you’re going to fire your coach the day after a loss do it before he jumps on Zoom I know thank God man and how that goes but before before this they lost to Louisville 89-61 they lost by 28 points I know and then and then I watched I watched yesterday and because that was also a plane watch and I mean you know there was just there was Bala was fine um but otherwise I don’t know Gonzaga was more Gonzaga if you want to call it that but yeah it’s it’s it’s Troublesome for Indiana um and this is the problem by the way we mentioned on the shootaround episode Indiana’s non-conference is atrocious and if you beat Providence sweet but Providence is 5 and three and not projected to be a tournament team now getting Bryce Hopkins back and healthy and maybe something changes there but this is going to be a quad two win at best I’m looking right now GP Indiana is going to not have a single quad one win and non-conference play yikes buddy yeah they have gone from 31st at kpom to 61st at kpom in less than a week um I had like I said on TV the other night tonight like this is going to be a you know when they lost by 28 the Louisville I was like yeah you know this is going to be one that they carry around with them all season like this is a this is a bad loss it’s gonna hurt him with the committee and some Louisville fan was like can you explain to me why it’d be a bad loss I’m like bro you’re you lost by 10 to Tennessee by 22 so that means Indiana just lost to a Louisville team just lost to a Louisville team by 28 the Louisville team lost to Tennessee by 22 and that Louisville team is uh obviously better and we should mention that congratulations Tois Louisville for like looking respectable and being Louisville again oh yeah man as a man who was raised on the Metro conference it broke my heart on some level to see the Louisville program go through what it’s been going through the past couple years but right now they’re uh five- one heading into the G today’s game against Oklahoma with that lone loss to Tennessee but Indiana if you’re in year four of Mike Woodson you ain’t supposed to be losing by 28 to Louisville and year won a pack Kelsey that was a bad that’s most basic way to put it bottom line you can’t lose like that in that spot can’t happen it did but it just puts that much pressure and that much attention and brings that much more angst to that fan base because Indiana’s roster and trajectory the the the situation in the Big 10 all indicates maybe it still will in in the league but it indicates that that needs to be a top three team in that conference and right now confidence in that is obviously wavering um couple quick more let’s get the final four one after break but first uh just a few results Arizona’s three and three loss is Wisconsin Duke in Oklahoma it plays West Virginia on Friday later today but that is definitely a uh Michigan is six and one beat Xavier in Virginia Tech uh in its mte Dusty May’s team is looking good that looks like one of the stronger offseason hires so far are just a I didn’t see a lot of this stuff I’m just giving you results I obviously Haven been able to check in on too much of the hoop here uh St Mary’s beat USC 71- 36 what um good job for Randy Bennett and his team they’re they’re prone to occasionally hold teams to a to a Bennett That’s 40 points or fewer obviously in a game uh but for USC to only manage 36 against St Mary’s team that sure it might make the tournament but we don’t think it’s top 25 good um Florida beat wake for 7558 Gators are 7-0 they play witch to State on Friday and then uh Butler beat Northwestern by a pair I think it was Brooks barnheiser tried to get off to see his son flourishing like this Jerry Parish takes Dylan Harper over Cooper flag O that’s tough because Cooper flag is like leading Duke in everything I think right now we’d be having a Cooper flag Dylan Harper argument and I that might be what we’re doing for the top of the NBA draft as well with Ace Bailey um Ace Bailey right there so Harper’s been great Bailey posting big numbers as well like um in the past three games Ruckers has taken a total of 196 shots and Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey have taken 106 of them that’s insane what it’s it’s they’re they’re in the past three games they’ve taken 54% of Rucker shots just I didn’t even know where to start to look this type of stuff up so I just started to think of like top two Duos in recent memory like so you immediately go to I know you would because you can’t even remember him but Zion Williamson and RJ Barrett Duke he’s from Toronto like that Master manipul uh master manipulator and habitual liar um colonizer RJ Barrett and Zion Williamson in that year at Duke they took 52% of of Duke’s shots they were both first team all-americans they took 52% of their shots Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey right now are taking 54% of Rucker shots in the past three games so um they getting their buck up but they have uh they’ve lost um you know a couple of games and this I think this is really a test for where we’re at in college basketball this Ruckers team not this game specifically but this Ruckers team because here’s the thing everybody knows Dylan Harper is awesome and everybody knows Ace Bailey is awesome and everybody knows Steve pel is a good basketball coach so we have given two top five piics who are awesome college basketball players to a great college basketball coach and we’re saying go Inn with it yeah you’re young go in with it though if if if Ruckers is not good this year that and I don’t want to speak in absolutes but that’s a real like next bit of evidence that that says the days of trying to go win when your best two players are freshman you just that’s you can’t do that anymore um tell you what Harper has 73 points at Players era if he goes for 35 Plus again and ruers beats A&M just give him a million dollars let’s just he should just get you just get paid all the money for that he’s been outstanding here um both teams are 5- two A&M lost to Oregon then be kraton I’m going to take A&M to win I’ll take Ruckers to cover you said it was six kmom yeah I’ll have Ruckers covering I’ll tell you what Buzz Williams team is really really good on the offensive glass like top five in the AVN Hall of Famer real goat goat goat stuff that’s the reason for the arena um she’s uh she’s from Las Vegas born and raised born and raised baby born and raised AVN Hall of Famer she’s in multiple hall of fames actually she’s in more hall of fames than you and Pete Rose I never claimed otherwise she’s in more hall of fames than you and Pete Rose I know that J Jameson never bet on baseball that’s what I’m trying to tell you all right kids uh Alabama six-1 lost at Purdue beat Houston and Ruckers by five a piece um Oregon is 7-0 it’s coming off winning at Oregon State and then beat A&M in San Diego State at Players era it’s got four averaging between 14 and 10 a game Jackson Shel had 10 four and four uh I would say statistically Oregon is not outstanding but this kind of win boy with that that’ be a drill I mean I if they were to win this game I think Oregon would be among the five or so more surprising teams in the country through the first month of the Season only because they would get out of November without a loss and they were expected to be decent but not necessarily like top 30 good and they got an opportunity to do that here Mark SE is finally getting back to normal he’s had 24 his past two games after being a little bit up and down he’s averaging 16.7 points 3.4 assists 3.1 rebounds shooting just 37 a half% from the field and 34% from three-point range we’ll see if he can uh if he can stay good but the sear shell stad matchup here is is pretty cool Nate BD’s the name to know for Oregon in terms of a guy who’s really producing that’s not a a household name and I’m going to go Bama to to win and cover in this one I think I think Nate O’s team is going to put on the type of performance in this spot that will reinforce its credibility as you know top five level uh they’ve only got the one loss as I mentioned here and I know the Houston game was a real battle um and then the ruter game was was pretty close but I like him to uh to flirt with if not hit 90 again uh and in in doing so do that for the fourth straight game because they also obviously have the win where they dropped 100 on Illinois Nate ble is interesting instate product fourth year at Oregon only played five games last season he played the first three broke his wrist came back in late January and then had long covid come play yeah and so he lost like 30 pounds and had to spend the entire offseason just getting back into basketball condition and he’s been really good so far I’ve got Oregon I moved him into the top 25 and one I’ve got him at 25th as of Friday morning um you mentioned Mark Sears um better lately but like as of this moment his points rebounds assists all down field goal percentage down three-point percentage down free throw percentage down everything is down concern you at all or it’s early he’ll be fine give me three more games okay I’m going give you three more games then three more games here yeah hey this big spot here I mean let’s let’s keep it keep it turned around in this one but yeah you know what what’d you take Alabama minus three yes give me the dock yeah this is how you put yourself in a surmountable situation that’s what’s going on here I mean it’s Jenna jamus in Arena I guess that makes sense it’s Jenna jamus in Arena she’s who would you rather have in Jenna jamus and Arena a duck or a crimson TI think about that for a do make any sense however uh surmountable situation in Jenna Jameson Arena she’s a she’s a goat man you know sure sure okay and one okay Louisville versus Oklahoma in the battle for Atlantis 5:30 Eastern on ESPN at least hold on let me let me let me double check that uh that broadcast situation here uh we got I got my child right it is ESPN 530 and the line is Louisville minus three and a half uh Louisville got a that big win over Indiana and then beat West Virginia in overtime on Thanksgiving Oklahoma talk about one of the breakout freshman uh in the country and by that I mean you know he’s playing like one of the 10 best freshman in America and he wasn’t expected to be that Jeremiah fears 18 points four and a 4.7 assists 3.8 rebounds he’s been tremendous uh he leads the Sooners in scoring and the Sooners you know I mentioned Oregon would be in this categor Oklahoma even more if it can uh if it can win here and and and continue an undefeated start of the season um Jaylen Moore is averaging 177 and a half a game there’s good stuff there meanwhile for Louisville Chucky heurn stepping up big uh the Wisconsin transfer is playing really well along with rain Smith and and uh kaan prior they’ve been uh they’ve been tremendous so far so this is a this is a wonderful matchup it’s our N1 on Louisville minus three and a half who’s your pick I was raised on the Metro conference I know you were so that’s something to consider I almost moov Oklahoma into the top 25 and one on Friday morning I had one spot cuz I moved out Arkansas moved out Arizona moved in Illinois had one spot I gave it to Dayton I went with Dayton but Oklahoma was on the short list of uh of teams I was considering I’m going to take the points I really am genuinely like happy for Louisville fans to be experiencing success but these are in my mind these are two comparable teams so what am I getting three and a half points give me three and a half points and I’ll just hope for a close game do you want to pick the basketball game it’s Oklahoma versus if you’re not watching my son is now joined us he’s sitting with me you’re going to talk into the microphone Oklahoma’s goingon to play Louisville and basketball who do you think’s gonna win uh Oklahoma you’re gonna take Oklahoma Oklahoma you’re gonna take Oklahoma okay so we got uh we can add that there G to take Oklahoma do you want to try and pick the score remember it’s basketball to score more than football so what do you think how many points any thoughts okay ex any thoughts any thoughts on what happened to Brandon Davies nope nope no there and do at the at the battle fort Atlantis and the Bahamas uh the winter I mean talk about just know strutting into no into December that’d be uh that really would be something there so yeah I’ll go with the I’ll go with the Cardinals and I do think that’s a show we have we have made a lot of a lot of history on this show um I’m doing it after uh just an travel day an alltime travel day and I don’t even know what time it is right now I slept 11 hours last night but I still feel like I only slept three because I did not I went I don’t know 50 hours on two hours of sleep or something like that had a dream Steve Kerr texted me he was like hey I got your number from some other coach right heard you love music I’m in Connecticut let’s go hang out and talk I was supposed to be on a date with my wife and I bailed on my wife to go talk music with very weird ing on your wife in your dreams picking against your son on the Pod somebody’s you forfeited the game somebody’s losing themselves a little bit I did forfeit a game I’ve refused to pick against Purdue or ol Miss I’m too torn it’s like it’s like asking me to pick between my kids except I could actually pick between my kids when are one of your kids gonna make an appearance on the Pod because that was another piece of History we made on the show here um would you trust would you trust your children to appear on the podcast and talk on a microphone yes but they might cuss or or say or say something otherwise inappropriate but you know I don’t think I don’t think I don’t think they’d get us fired that was my by the way that was my six-year-old who was on there who is developing into a sports uh Sports freak so um only appropriate that popped on one way to continue to build that confidence in him is to pick against
