two more teams are reportedly interested in trading for Garrett crochet and one of them is the Cubs let’s discuss Garrett possibly pitching at Wrigley Field next season next on lockdown White Soxs you Southside showdown. comom part of the fan site of network and also I’ve covered Major League Baseball for Outlets such as the Associated Press and thanks for making lockdown White Sox your first listen every day part of the lockdown podcast Network your team every day make sure to hit the like button on today’s episode subscribe to the YouTube channel at lockdown White Sox if you’ve not done so already and also follow or subscribe to the show at wherever you get your podcast well MLB Network Baseball Insider John morosi just tweeted this morning that you can add the Cubs and the Reds to the list of viable candidates to trade for gar crochet let’s discuss if it’s viable for him going to the north side then I’ll talk with lockdown Red’s host Jeff Carr to see if Cincinnati is a viable trade partner and finally it’s way back Wednesday and let’s revisit a major socks trade that happened 17 years ago this week and you can start the season with a big return on FanDuel new customers can place $5 do a $5 do bet and you’ll get started with $150 in bonus bets if you win your first $5 bet visit fanduel.com to get started well finally Cubs are reportedly interested in trading for gar crochet and thank you yes I know it’s the Rival Cubs but hey that well has always produced good water for the white socks outside of the Craig Kimbell trade even the George Bell for Samy Sosa paid a little bit of dividends we obviously know the uh Matt cartoner for John Garland trade was a huge payoff for the socks thanks Cubs and even though it was brief that the white socks looked like they were going to be the winners of the a canana trade you know there was some benefit with Dylan CE you know and then obviously when ELO imz was healthy especially in 2019 he was crushing home runs but it’s not just history as why you should be happy that the Cubs are now reportedly interested in trading for uh gar crochet is that the Cubs have the hitting prospects that might rival what the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles have to offer I might have to put the Cubs at like 1A if I are power ranking this or number two or even one or three they’re definitely a great trade partner for garri crochet I mean this is definitely a team you want in and I don’t care if it means watching him pitch at Wrigley for at least the next two seasons doesn’t matter to me the white sock are so far away from being competitive that basically beating the Cubs will be the World Series for the white socks for the next couple of seasons and even if it means having to beat G crochet fine because that that’s how of a bottom the socks are at you know again they’re getting their mail probably delivered in the figurative seller for the next couple of years they are terrible an historic 121 loss season they don’t have outside of G crochet what’s the draw now to go watch the white socks maybe see if Luis Robert Jr can reclaim something the Cubs actually have prospects that the white socks could look at and build a be the foundation of a competitive baseball team um although him still possibly being on the North side’s wi this trade might not happen at all and if that happens that’s organizational negligence so first let’s get into uh what John morosi said or tweeted then let’s explore the Cubs system and then let’s touch on Jerry reinsdorf how he’s going to ruin the whole thing with his Cubs inferiority complex so first here is what John morosi tweeted and this is John morosi uh trade market update the Cubs and reds are among the viable candidates to acquire White Sox Ace gear crochet of note the Cubs and White Soxs have made four trades since 2017 beginning with the Jose canana deal and then he put at MLB Network so you might wonder first of all are the Cubs actually truly interested since they just signed Matt Boyd and it sounds like again uh the Cubs always seem to be claiming poverty the Cubs should be really dominating the NL Central and yes the Brewers drink are my backup team you know um they’re myl team and I’m grateful that the Cubs are still a sleeping giant because if they just woke up one day and realize you know we could we could do what the Dodgers are doing we could spend like the Yankees and and the Mets we’ll do that and develop our own Talent they would run the NL Central for forever forever because they don’t have to deal with a potential big spender like say the Tigers because the tigers have been willing to spend you know the socks always had the threat of the Tigers there if they ever woke up and you know wanted to spend more money but the Cubs don’t they have to again with small Market teams like the Reds like The Pirates Who are the Pirates are definitely just interested in just existing they only need to put out a decent product and even then they don’t have to put out a decent product because they’re going to make money hands over fist the Brewers have already indicated that they’re only willing to spend about 100 million to 130 on their payroll that’s it that’s as far as they’re going to go and they’ve got issues with their television revenue streams you know so it’s not like the Cubs have to be like you know the dod who have to compete with the San Diego Padres who at least are always willing to spend money even though they’re small markets or the San Francisco Giants or it’s not like uh Philadelphia who has to compete with the Braves who has the money to spend you know you’re you’re talking about a bunch of small Market teams and the Cardinals because the Cardinals they don’t ever spend money either they could but not a lot so the Cub should be running the NL Central and yet you got Tom rickets here probably still citing his losses of biblical proportions in 2020 not spending the money you know if there is one owner who could sit at the not spending enough table with Jerry rinor it’s Tom Ricketts and if there’s one baseball executive who has never really used his vast farm system to acquire a keep you know acquire a key piece to really put them over the top it’s Jed Hoyer I mean yes trading Matt Morell was a big deal on the North side but they could have moved a lot of other guys to upgrade to actually you know take the division last year and they didn’t so you know are they viable I mean on paper yes but will it happen I’d put it at maybe 5050 at least on the Cubs end because obviously he’s going to come cheap you know because think about it when it comes to the you know cup spending they thought just spending on Craig Council last year would push push them over the top and yeah he’s a plus manager but doesn’t hit field or pitch and even when when he when he was playing it wasn’t like he was hitting Elite so I’m just I’m weary about the Cubs but man just dream of it because the Cubs have plenty of hitting prospects to offer eight Prospect eight prospects in MLB pipeline’s top 100 with seven of them position players so right off the bat though I would eliminate Matt Shaw I don’t think you know you don’t have Jim you know Jim Lynch still running things or um Annie mcfa still running things where it’s like oh we’ll give you our top prospect like they did with John Garland I believe he was one of their top prospects I I I would eliminate that but Owen Casey he would look great in a socks uniform outfielder was ranked 34th in MLB pipeline 22y old left-handed hitter obviously could be blocked in the Outfield by Pete Crow Armstrong say Suzuki Ian hap and Cody Bellinger especially if Bellinger isn’t traded this off season yes Cubs fans I know he can play first base too but I’m just saying like the Outfield right now is pretty crowded you know and Casey hit 268 with an 847 Ops did strike out 156 times at Triple A but he hit 19 home runs um I’m not sure that they would trade catcher first basem Moises BOS since obviously catcher has always been a problem on the North side since they let contras go uh James uh tranos I probably butcher that name but especially Kevin alantra they’re two top 100 prospects that could also be bled at the big league level so maybe alcantra I i’ take him you know as part of one of the pieces and the Cubs also have Cam Smith who’s already at Double A 73rd rank Prospect although I doubt he gets moved as he was just drafted in the first round I don’t I don’t think the Cubs would move their recently drafted first round pick for gar crochet because again they they’ve got at least pitching depth so it’s not like they have to have to get gar crochet and they also in the NL Central where you know if you win 83 games obviously they got to find a way to get to 90 to beat the Brewers but it’s not like they have to be desperate enough like maybe say Boston who has to try to Leap Frog uh the Yankees the Orioles and potentially even the Blue Jays if they win the woto sweep Stakes like that’s a and the Rays like that is a murderous role that’s where maybe they’re going to definitely think about giving up Bren Montgomery because they have to compete with four other teams where the Cubs they just got to find a way to get past the Brewers um and maybe the Reds uh the Cubs have the fifth ranked farm system according to Fang graphs number eight according to MLB pipeline number four per bleacher and number 12 according to ESPN uh Bleacher Report has six of the Cubs prospects with a tier one ranking that’s obviously Elite status and this is what MLB pipeline wrote about their system the Cubs have graduated four former top 100 prospects to Ridley field this year PEC pcro Armstrong Michael bus Jordan Wicks and Ben Brown yet they still tie for the org league with six this was at the time um this is what they wrote back up in August six top one guys all of them are in AAA and should bolster the big league club soon it’s a top Avy system that dropped off fast after the contingent uh precious shortstop uh Jefferson Roos and 2024 first-rounder cam Smith however and there’s precious little hitting so you know they’re definitely not you know you don’t have to worry about getting more pitchers although hey Kate Horton again I’m not opposed to him either but since the Cubs have Kate Horton as their only Elite pitching Prospect it makes sense for the Cubs to be interested in crochet especially since Ben Brown is coming back from an injury so this is the IDE deal trade partner outside of Boston and maybe even probably ahead of the I actually yes I’m going to put him ahead of the Orioles because I just don’t see the Orioles giving up Kobe Mayo or Samuel basalo I do see the Cubs though with their depth of Fielding prospects that they still have that are young could entice the white sock and I could see Jed Hoyer finally saying you know what it’s only going to cost us $3 million in salary for gar crochet let’s do it plus you can always extend gar crochet if Tom rickets decides that he’s no longer losing money uh but you gotta wonder if small-minded owner Jerry reinsdorf is gonna allow it to happen and I I could just see him ruining it because shout out to my guy Jordan Campbell at Cubbies crib.com part of the fanid of network he found this little nugget when he was uh listening to um the athletic shav Sarma shahad Sarma Sharma and Patrick Mooney and also really quick hate to go off to beaten py but the athletic has two beat R beat riders for the Cubs and none for the white socks they laid off James Fegan they basically decided we are not going to cover the white socks on a daily basis and that shows you the state of interest and the state of if you can make any money off the Southsiders right there but they talked on their North Side territory podcast and Jordan you know he paid attention and heard this when he was listening to it and wrote it on Cubby’s crib uh that they think rinor is gonna block a move because he doesn’t want to help the Cubs and enough with the jealousy of the Cubs and feeling inferior to them Jerry stop it if they give you the best offer take it if you don’t sell the team stop with this organizational malpractice I mean again even if it was brief it was nice for a while to see The Socks win the Jose canana deal it was brief they ended up being the ultimate losers but you still got Dylan C for a while and ELO YZ at least gave you that 2019 in the thanks Cubs you remember that although in Jerry’s case no because he didn’t like Jason benetti but John Garland worked out great and I don’t care if Samy Sosa went on to win MVPs at Wrigley Field because even if he well again alleged steroid use so you know again if even if he was doing all those free weights that he claimed on the South Side I don’t think he was ever going to be that player he was just such a mess Walt Henrik got into his head and he just could not hit at old kamsky or new kamsky so just stop with the Cubs you know inferiority or I don’t want to help the Cubs or the Cubs yeah I don’t like the Cubs either but since especially the 2016 World Series and how the charact you know cast of characters they had I don’t hate them and I and I’m tired of this let’s feel inferior to them like yeah I want to I want to be the the better team the team that I root for in Chicago I want them to be the better team clearly and yeah there’s fun bragging rights and blah you know all that stuff but stop with this just we gotta we gota you know we can’t compete with the Cubs I hate that I hate that about Jerry r that oh well we can’t compete with Cubs you can compete if you choose to you don’t Jerry you chose to go to cable for the money grab and thus allow the Cubs fan brace to grow with WGN that was your decision not the Cubs getting lucky you know also it helps that why do you think the you know because I remember hearing that he thought oh the Cubs got lucky because they stayed on WGN no they you gave them Samy Sosa now obviously you couldn’t project him lifting a lot of allegedly lifting just a lot of free weights but these are your decisions but you’ve also benefited from the Cubs on back again John Garland you remember game five I mean the 2005 World Series run just saying those are the risks you take but you keep you chose to go off of cable I mean off of over thee aair television you chose not to build up a neighborhood around your ballpark because you wanted the parking lot Revenue everything the sock everything about the socks being little brother to the Cubs is a direct result of Jerry rorf not the fans Not Wrigley Jerry so Jerry if you if you block you know if the Cubs make the best offer and you block it because it’s the Cubs more apathy more fans are going to run run away from this fan B from this team you know that would be a huge huge death nail well let’s see if the reds are a viable trade Partners I’ll talk with apple or Spotify either way get your 30-minute fix of Chicago White Sox baseball venting with me so are the Reds a viable trade option for Garett crochet I discussed that with lockdown Red’s co-host Jeff Carr all right so do the Reds make sense as a trade partner for crochet in in a objective sense like the Reds have prospects to offer yes I think it’s interesting because I I’ve read a couple of different things MLB pipeline has something about the Reds being being a good trade partner for the winter meetings for anybody looking to make a deal for some prospects and things like that but I don’t look at them in the same vein as I look at like the Orioles the Orioles feel like they have a just so many prospects that they’re all blocking each other and there’s so many young players at the major league level that are blocking them as well I kind of don’t feel that way about the Reds like a couple of guys they have to offer play Corner infield positions and while they have Christian and carosio Strand and Noel V Marte seemingly struggling a little bit they just got started we don’t know who they are there could be a case where a s Stewart or a cam Collier who are two Marquee dudes could take over those spots in a couple of years so they are available and the Reds definitely have some good talent to offer and if you’re the white socks you’re definitely looking at a cam col or ass sou Stewart you’re looking at Edwin a Royo you’re looking at the pitchers and Chase Petty Chase Burns maybe even a dark horse and Connor Phillips but for all of them to be from the red side of things I I don’t know that I want to offer all of those guys up in a trade right now that’s that’s kind of where I look at this as being viable and what is most likely to happen with this Red’s organization but yes they are viable as I am viable to maybe I don’t know go on a little bit of a diet maybe cut a couple of pounds you know things I could yeah so in our in our text exchanges uh before you know ring out of time you kind of were like I I don’t think this would happen why do you think it won’t happen I I know the messaging that the front office has put out there the last couple of years ever since Nick crawl took control of the ship here he really made it clear that he wants to build a sustainable winner and while garri croch would be amazing in this rotation for two years it’s two years and I don’t know that he’s going to be available as as far as a contract extension candidate for a small Market team like the Reds the reds are probably do for one more contract extension maybe two if they stretch it but if crochet has another year like he had in 2024 dude’s gonna be able to ask for Ace money and the Reds aren’t paying Ace money so that’s really where I look at this and I think I don’t necessarily know that it makes a lot of sense because you would have to give up top fight Talent and and I reckon that what the white socks are looking for in this is probably where I have my biggest reservation I don’t know specifically I just have some suspicions So based on what the white socks are looking for in their rebuild is this something that it’s just like yeah give us like three of your first Top 10 Prospects and then we’ll start talking yeah so the GM Chris gets basically said that they want positional prospects they need positional prospects if you look at their farm system it’s stacked with arms you look at their top 10 stacked with arms they just lack impact bats uh C momery their top hitting Prospect uh hit under 220 at Triple A although he did do well uh in September and in the Arizona fall league but they just lack a lot of impact bats because that’s just something that their system has never been good at uh developing and they just never been good at drafting it um the other thing is they’re willing to take on prospects that maybe uh that’s been reported that are not close to the big leagues last year one of the reasons why the Dylan ceas move probably didn’t happen was they wanted players that were close to the big leagues that’s one of the reasons why they ended up with Drew Thorp and hyro AR Arte from the Padres because they were pitchers um that you could live without and they were close to the big league so that’s kind of what the white socks are looking for and yes they are reportedly asking for a big uh offer in terms of top top to your prospects and then that circles back to have Red’s fans grasp if you want something good you’re going to have to give up something good to get it back because I still have the scars from when I suggested a certain amount of talent in Southside Showdown uh for the Reds trading for Dylan c i I think it’s funny that like you know this is the key time of year right where everybody’s coming up with their own trade proposals and most of the time it’s the broken seat and right field for Aaron judge you things like that um I do think that a lot of Reds fans have gone through the last few years understanding Prospect worth and understanding what it means for the Reds to build from within so I I I think that they’re there’s a general hesitancy in Red’s country when it comes to prospect Deals they believe that they could trade the failed prospects for topf flight talent and that is where I really have reservations with this because that’s not what happening here you’re looking at Edwin a Royo you’re looking at a guy who if he really comes back shows he’s healthy and shows he can hit the ball really well in spring training you could be talking about a late stage call up here in 2025 and and and maybe if in a hypothetical world he gets traded to the white socks maybe the white sock even FastTrack him a little bit he’s getting toward the age of being a major Leaguer it’s just he lost a year last year for injuries he lost a year in 2020 for covid so that’s why his his uh where he’s at in the minor leagues isn’t necessarily where you would expect him to be he’ll be in tripa at some point this year for sure if not at the beginning of the year and a guy like South Stewart who is hitting the cover off the ball defensively a few questions whether it’s third base or first base but he hit the cover off the ball in high a looked like he’s going to be pretty well here in doua this year same for cam Coler cam Collier turned 19 last year and he was in in high a so I mean you’re talking about a guy that’s definitely got the world in front of him despite having been in the miners for a few years for the Reds you you still have a couple of years before he’s Major League ready so I’d be interested maybe even in in talking a little bit about those guys because I think that if they were part of the deal and this is where Red’s fans have a problem if you start naming Stewart if you start naming a Royo they’re like oh I don’t know if we want to do that deal but those are going to have to be the guys that you offer yeah on the flip side obviously you’re not going to be the socks don’t need the pitching so you don’t have to worry about possibly giving up your two top prospects uh before I jump into Luis Robert Jr I you’re the Reds were the last team to really get the number one Prospect from a team that was also a top 15 Prospect how is noal Marte paying off I hopefully pronounce that name right how is he paying off for the Reds and again why do you think you’ll we’ll never see a deal like that ever again because you do have a lot of White Sox fans that are like well if we’re trading crochet we better get the number one Prospect we better get you know uh Roman Anthony from uh the Red Sox it’s like those deals aren’t happening anymore and your team was the last one because he was in single a I think it’s simply because Luis Castillo was everything that you could expect from a Sai Young Contender and you could expect it for years and years and years because while he was at the top of his game he wasn’t already like 30 or something like that and he had been pitching super well for multiple Seasons the the argument that I’m pushing back on with uh with garri crochet like I saw the Talent last year before 2024 he had only thrown like 60s something in 70s something Innings something like that 73 innings in a relief capacity dealing with Tommy John which to to the credit of Tommy John surgery uh folks when you get Tommy John it takes a few years before you have to worry about that again but the shoulder issue in 2023 also gave me a little bit of pause so I I I look at G crochet and I’m like man I know the talent is there I just need a little bit more of a track record there was a great track record with Luis Castillo on the Marte side of things he showed flashes in 2023 barely played I mean we got like 30 games out of him so we didn’t know who we had but we were excited then the peed suspension in 2024 cut off half as season and when he came back it looked like he really couldn’t grasp what he had at the end of 2023 he completely had started over and he never really got going in 2024 and so there’s now a lot of folks that are out on him I’m somewhere in the middle I still think he’s got talent I still think The Scouting Report is viable it’s the word of the day um so I think that I I I want to see more from him though I wouldn’t say that I’m handing him the keys to the third base as some folks may have been ready to do after the 2023 cup of coffee that he had so finally would the Reds be one of the teams willing to give up something significant for Luis Robert Jr is that’s the asking price right now um the White Sox at least they’re willing to not take on a bolt load of prospects they just want something significant to get his 15 million off the books that’s where I say all right I’m reticent to trade guy like Stuart klier uh a Royo maybe even a really young Prospect in alfredo duno who looks like a really solid catching Prospect for the future I’m reticent to do that for crochet I think I’d rather do that for Luis Robert and i’ I’ve kind of gone back in forth on this because at the beginning of the offseason I wasn’t interested because it felt like there was so many options out on the free agent Market that the Reds could definitely go get one of those guys and significantly upgrade their Outfield but with Luis Robert you are adding a guy that is under team control with a couple of Team options and things like that on his contract that I think are very palatable I guess is the word for the Reds that you know like you know what the deal is you don’t have to negotiated you don’t have to convince them it’s make the trade put the prospects in the deal I think if I had to pick in a vacuum I would do the deal the the large amount of prospects for Luis Robert over Garett crochet yeah I mean because the reports are though a lot of the 29 other teams are saying look you know he’s still talented but he’s never available he’s always heard he’s only played 145 games one time and the other time he played 100 games was this year and it was exactly 100 games and he hit 224 so you know the socks obvious I mean they are at least realistic my fear though is is here’s the thing if they hold on to him and he gets hurt and any team that trades for him yeah there’s the it’s 40 million owed if the gamble goes your way if it doesn’t go your way you got to pay him $2 million to go away now granted you get to pay him two million I mean compar the socks just paid five million for yoan monata to go away but still you have you know you’re looking at a make or break season for uh you know Luis Robert junr and that’s my fear is the White Soxs are trading him because they’re afraid that he’s gonna get hurt again and they also are crying poverty and they want to get his $15 million plus the next 40 million owed off their books so I would be glad if the Reds offered something significant but as you said a lot of teams are saying no and the white socks are being dumb and saying well you just guys want something for nothing and it’s like well okay in Garrett crochet case you could argue that and Luis Robert Junior’s case right now his value is Pennies on the dollar all right let’s do a way back Wednesday with a sort of what if Wednesday twist and discuss the socks acquiring Carlos Quinton during the during this week let’s do a way back Wednesday with sort of a what if Wednesday twist and discuss the socks acquiring Carlos Quinton during this week 17 years ago next un lockedown white socks all right welcome back to lockon White Soxs I’m your host Todd Welter again shout out to all the every dayers I appreciate your loyalty please hit the like button on today’s episode recommend to your fellow socks fans or Baseball fans friends to subscribe to the YouTube channel at lockdown White Soxs or wherever they get their podcast as shows available on all major platforms and hey uh if you do listen on uh you know the audio version feel free to leave a festar review um we are at least on Apple we’re at 4.5 hey let’s get that rating up uh I know in the beginning there were some you know I I was trying to get my feet but hopefully I’m doing a better job hopefully I’m entertaining you hopefully I’m informing you and hopefully I’m challenging you all right so every White Sox fan who was around in 2008 will always wonder what if Carlos Quinton does not fracture his wrist in September you know how far does that team go in the playoffs because Quinton coming to the socks during this week 17 years ago helped the socks rebound from a disastrous injury Riddle 2007 and they ended up winning the AL Central in 2008 the interesting thing was he was a Reclamation acquisition who turned into an All-Star for the socks I mean there wasn’t a whole lot of expectations I mean think about here’s what sports illustrator wrote about the trade the Chicago White Soxs added depth to their inexperienced Outfield Monday acquiring H Carlos Quinton from the Arizona Diamondbacks for minor leager first baseman Jeff Carter once considered a top prospect Quint batted 24 with five home runs and 31 RBI in 81 games for the NL West champions this season he lost his starting job in the right field and was demoted to the miners in July then recalled a few weeks later but he missed most of August with a strain right hamstring and was left off the playoff roster in Chicago the 25-year-old Quinton could get another chance to earn regular playing time perhaps in left field the white socks cut Li hit Li hitting Speedster Scott penic last month and right fielder Jermaine D is the only proven Slugger in their Outfield now this was also a trade where you could say both teams actually benefited as a week later the Diamondbacks traded Carter to the A’s to get All-Star pitcher Dan Herron and he went to two more All-Star games for the Diamondbacks so win-win Carter also eventually went on to have a productive career in The Bigs but probably would never have happened on the south side because the socks had Paul canero and then eventually Jose Abu and I’d rather have Jose than Chris Carter uh Quint produced a Silver Slugger season for the socks in 2008 with a 288 394 571 slash line a WRC plus of 152 he hit 36 home runs in 130 games I believe he also d drove in exactly 100 RBI then on September 5th he fractures his wrist that’s right his own because he had his that those temper issues he just banged his you know barrel of his Bat after fouling off a pitch and fractured his wrist the white sock potential MVP bat he finished fifth that year you know you wonder how much the white so how far the socks would have went in the playoffs had he not been that dumb and that selfish because he was just gone from that lineup now obviously at least the socks had enough to pull off the late season scramble to win the 2008 AL Central but maybe having Quinton there is enough to beat the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS you know it’ll always be a great wh if uh Quinton playing Four Seasons on the Southside made the All-Star team again in 2011 he hit 257 during his four years on 35th and shields with 7 career home runs and an 857 Ops during that fouryear span he was traded to San Diego after the 2000 season well that wraps up this edition of lockdown white sock thank you for making lockdown White Sox your first listen today
