welcome to Eye of the storm our St John’s video series presented by Tri-State Cadillac all right we’re back with another edition of Eye of the storm where we talk about some St John’s basketball and a very interesting start to the season for St John’s they are 5-2 they recently came back from a trip to Bahamas and joining me as he came back from a trip to Bahamas with the Johnny’s is my guy the beat reporter for New York Post covering St John’s my guy Zach brazilla Zach what’s going on man what’s up man how are we how you do I’m doing good how are you you just came back from Bahamas it’s nice beautiful beautiful Resort great weather expensive food um you know the results you you could have been better but um yeah nice nice 5-day trip it’s nice now back to the cold it’s not yeah I know I’m I’m jealous I I would have liked to have been down in the Bahamas enjoying some nice warm weather and some expensive food I would have took that too that’s what the that’s what would the expenses afford that we do that the expense the expense for the expensive food all right Zach so St John’s they go one and two in the Bahamas tough losses to Baylor and Georgia what were the biggest takeaways from their performances in these games that you saw in this tournament you know I thought they played really well in the first two games um for the most part Balor they they had 18-point lead you know they Baylor comes back number top 15 team in the country like you you would expect come back St John’s had the game one the end of double overtime they miss a few free throws Baylor hits a shot at the buzzer the clock did not start on time this was later revealed and patino even said the officials the next day apologized um so just an absolute CR you know you can’t lose a game a tougher game in November then they come back and they Crush Virginia could have won the game by 40 if they wanted he unloaded the bench with seven minutes left and you were feeling good you know the team really answered the Bell after just a really tough loss and then to end it you had a Georgia team that had just lost the previous day of Marquette it was a competitive game and they you know say you could see St John’s just they didn’t have their legs they they were struggling to get past guys Georgia’s a good team I don’t I I think they’re probably a bubble team in the NCA tournament I think it’s a game under normal circumstances St John’s probably wins by 10 to 12 maybe 15 points but they shot they shot the ball terribly from the field kadari Richmond really struggled they they were step slow now despite shooting 30% despite going two of 19 for three they still had a chance to win the game at the end couldn’t do it I thought it marred the trip to me they should have been two And1 on this trip if not 3 and0 it’s disappointing but I do think there were positives you can take the first two days they look like a legit top 20 team I don’t think there’s any question about that they stood toe-to-toe Baylor should have won the game forget even the clock they missed a ton of free throws um too many turnovers like stuff where they’re going to get better at um that you know I was very encouraged in Virginia they look great dunking everything high flying Virginia’s going to have a down year but still a high power Conference team you know and look I think Georgia was a bad matchup I also think Georgia coming off a loss was really amped up to beat a ranked team and St John’s was you know coming off a blowout win didn’t have that quite didn’t have the same desire um but look five- two you have a win over new Max we have a win over Virginia um they’re still I think they’re 14th in kenpom I know fans are very upset very disappointed but I still think you know my my opinion on this team hasn’t changed because they had a one and two trip it just you know the ball didn’t quite bounce their way in in a few spots here yeah it didn’t and it’s tough and I get it from the fans you would like to see the team go two- one they did not on the trip one and two but still in a good spot as you said now the last time you and I spoke we talked about the importance of being nationally ranked for the program we talked about that earlier season so after falling out of the top 25 how do you think the team’s confidence and focus will be affected moving forward because that’s the thing you know players like fans like but is there any effect to their confidence now they’re no longer a top 25 team no I don’t I don’t think so this early look we don’t this early nobody really knows who are the best 25 teams in the country um they’re going to have look they’re going to have a lot of time to work on issues they’re going to have time to kind of try to get kadari Richmond getting get going more consistent they’re going to have time to kind of figure some some things out they don’t play against until Saturday against Harvard they have another full week off before Kansas State so they’ve got they’ve got a lot of time to kind of tweak some things um you know for the future I I don’t I don’t think I think their confidence is shaking look they they’ve won their five games all basically in blowoff fashion New Mexico was a 14-point game so I guess you could say that wasn’t necessarily a blowout but it was a easy win and they lost two games by combined Four Points both games they easily could have won right if they if they just shoot poorly instead of awful they beat Georgia you know the you could there were there were a lot of minor little tiny things in the Bor game that could have made a difference Zub Ed for you know up four 40 seconds left trying to go in for the dunk instead of just pulling the ball out game is different they make a free throw down the stretch game is different the clock starts like it kind of it was kind of The Perfect Storm to the end that second overtime that that enabled um Baylor to to win that game but I think in the long run they this this trip will be good for them you know they they they’ve dealt with adversity we saw it with how they came back with the Virginia game um I think they’re probably going to learn something from that Georgia game in terms of you know when your shots aren’t falling how you you know you can do other things to you know the I will say I was very encouraged um and I know I’ve spoken to some people around the program that were very encouraged with the Georgia game that despite just having a terrible offensive performance they it didn’t impact them on the other end of the Court they still defended they they actually rebounded the ball much better in the second half after they’re not really rebounding it well in the first half and they had a chance to beat a decent team despite probably their worst offensive game of the year I think that there’s something to be said for that um but yeah no in the long run I don’t I don’t think falling out top 20 2 is going to hurt their confidence top 25 is great for Optics but in the long run I don’t think it’s very it’s all that important right we talked about this before right the fans like it it is something that’s nice for the program but in the long run you want to be playing your best basketball late in the season and we hope that St John can get to that now how has Rick patino how has he reacted to what he saw from the team in the Bahamas right knowing they dropped these two games very close do you think there’ll be any changes in terms of focus for him and in terms of the play style for St John’s going forward or is it we just got to get back to the basics I think one thing you’re going to see more of is kadari Richmond in the post that was something he did a lot at se Hall we haven’t seen quite as much of that so far this year and you know I feel like he’s been on the perimeter a little too much kadari is great in the post finding guys and using his his size and and his length and he’s been a lot more on the perimeter we all know he’s not a great three-point shooter um so that’s one thing but look patino was actually encouraged like like what he saw from how they battled on Sunday despite not being able to throw the ball in the ocean um he he was encouraged by that he was very very very upset after the Balor loss there’s no doubt he knew that was a game they should have won the clock stop he also felt the ref’s ice zubeda for at the line St John’s he gets foul 4.1 seconds left St John’s a two-point lead and the Balor coach calls for a review because I guess zubie might have swung his elbow didn’t come close to the player and so zubie was kind of just waiting there to take his free throws and who knows if you go straight to the line how that’s different look there are a million things that could have changed but he was very upset just at at how that game ended and he was very very encouraged by how they responded and he was encouraged by the effort on Sunday you know they they were a step slow I think it was no doubt three games it was really three games in three and a half days because they’re playing the game on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. and look that’s not an excuse no one wants to make excuses but I do it’s a fact they clearly did not have did not have the same quickness First Step they weren’t they weren’t getting by guys and that’s one thing we haven’t all year you know against a good defense team in New Mexico they were getting by guys against Bale a really athletic team they were getting by guys so that was to me was was one thing I noticed and that was part of to me the bad offense pits the ball move wasn’t good and part of that was the dribble penetration was very limited part of that’s Georgia a good defensive team a really athletic team they have a oneandone a most likely oneandone kid in as Newell who was terrific in the game he was but um yeah look it’s one and two you would love you would love it to be two one but it’s one and two and now they’ve got a lot of time to kind of work on stuff and and figure things out I I think they’re well ahead of last year’s team I think the New Mexico win is going to be a a quality win I think New Mexico is an NCA tournament team so you have that you get K State who while has looked very shaky this year does have a lot of talent and I do think K will eventually improve and you get that game at caresa you win that game and then so you have two you know somewhat decent wins going into league play and you know I’ve been watching a lot of the Big East lately and I think yukon’s the best team still even though they lost yesterday but outside of Yukon and maybe Marquette I think St John’s is as good if not better than anyone else all right hope for the Johnny fans here we’re going to get into the schedule in a little bit I want to talk to you about scoring because it’s been inconsistent for the Johnny’s particularly in the second halves of these games what adjustments do you think they can make to ensure that the team maintains offensive Rhythm throughout these games because we’ve seen droughts or places where they haven’t been able to score how do they maintain that offensive Rhythm throughout the game yeah I think I think it’s a lot of that is kind of Richmond and Devon Smith getting in you know kind of finding their Niche and finding how to play together these are two guys that are both dominant players like I mentioned I think Richmond and the post is something you’re going to see more of I’d also like to see RJ Lewis get the ball more I think he’s their most offense talented offensive player a lot of his points kind of come in the flow of the offense offensive rebounds transition and we know he’s great there but to me he’s their best one-on-one player he’s their most talented offensive guy he’s been really good this year wasn’t great on Sunday had foul trouble early which kind of hurt his rhythm but I would like to see them maybe try to isolate him more especially when you have droughts and you need to really create stuff look they’re going to be an up and down off three-point shooting team they’re not a great three-point shooting team they don’t have a great a lot of great three-point Shooters especially Simeon Wilshire and Brady Dunlap have kind of been up and down so they’re going to be droughts it’s just the way it is this is this is a team I think is going to be a better defensive team than offensive team but I still think they’re going to be a good off a decent to good offensive team I do think they they need to use their strengths a little bit more m I mentioned Richmond I think RJ Lewis um so yeah and and I do look Wilshire and Dunlap had there’s one thing with those two guys they I feel like sometimes if they miss a shot or two it kind of sticks with them and that’s like patino said is he doesn’t ever want any of his players to second guess themselves you keep shooting the ball when you’re open and I thought Wilshire passed up on a few shots uh in the Georgia game that he should have taken Dunlap is dealing with a little hip issue he was 0 for four on Sunday from three I think he’s you know but to me the Dunlap thing is more of they showled offensively they weren’t getting good looks so a lot of these threes were forced and contested and the first two days they were a lot a lot more open shots and part of that was dribble penetration part of that was I I think they were fatigued on Sunday you just saw it with a lot of shots were short guys weren’t weren’t getting getting into the lane like they have been all year um I just think I would I would be more frustrated with the way the Balor game ended than I would Sunday I think Sunday they were just a lot of factors that kind of were working against them I think Friday was a game they they should have won there were they were just mistakes you can’t make against a really good team and you know it something that’s going to stick with them they’re going to they’re going to have to F you know get some big wins here and until they do I think people are going to be kind of like when are we when is this going to happen all right and it’s fine something you can stick with it and you can try to learn from it and move on and you have no choice but to move on and that’s where we go next because you mentioned the schedule Zack next three non-conference games all at home host Harvard Kansas State then Bryant how critical is this stretch for building momentum and confidence as they head into conference play they they they they have to win out non-conference in my opinion I mean look you they lose another non-conference game number one would be very disappointing they’re all four are all four caresa all four at home three of them they’re going to be huge favorites I’d be shocked if they lose Harvard Bryant they get Delaware after the first two Big East games Kansas State could be more tricky Kansas state does have a lot of talent there’s no question now they’re all transfers and this is a team that’s been really shaky they’ve already had some really bad losses but I I I’d be very surprised St John loses another non-conference I expect them to go n and two a non-conference and to have Kansas State and New Mexico as their as their two best wins and you would hope Kansas State kind of figures it out after after they play St John yeah you hope that’s when it happens we’ll see how it is very important upcoming stretch for the Johnnies with those games at home to end Don conference playing they obviously want to go to conference play starting off very well that is Zach brazilla does a fantastic job for us at the New York Post covering St John’s thank you for joining us on ey the storm Zack we will see how the Johnny’s do the rest of the non-conference schedule you going to come to Vegas next year when for the next year’s tournament I you know what I didn’t get the you gave me a sort of an invite to the Bahamas you’re officially invited you you and Steve sery can come hang out Vegas all right done we’ll all wear white we all do that all right thanks appreciate it man
