the man that you guys love to have on this show The Legend Mr Bob ill go read all of his stuff at usatoday.com follow him on X Bob last night we got a big deal one of the big trade the big signings so far this off season Blake Snell he goes to the Dodgers on a 5year $182 million deal $60 million around that in defers deferrals you have the signing bonus at 52 million what can you tell us about how this deal got done and how Blake ended up with the Dodgers well they were one one the three big pitchers they wanted Blake Snell or Max breed or C Burns I think preferably they want of course a left-hander so it’s probably between snail and freed and uh he snells pitched well on the west coast Andrew Freeman had him back in the day with the uh Tampa knew him well and I think he’s much more suit for the West Coast I always wondered how he’d do you know if he played in the big Market in Boston or New York Philly something like that and I think that’s why teams didn’t strong to pursue him a year ago and uh but yeah lights out you know historic second half uh deferred $62 million uh it kind of reminds me of what Otani did I mean obviously Otani defer a lot more but the fact he announces his own signing on his Instagram account and uh you smart move too with the big sing B deferrals because he lives in the state of Washington no state taxes there so you know great move by the Dodgers uh you know now they have you know a good strong seven starters if they got you know Roki Sasaki now you’re talking about eight starters yeah absolutely you essentially have four guys that could be game one starters in a postseason series with Blake snail added Tyler glass now yoshinobu Yamamoto you look at shotani back on the mound he’s as good as it gets when he’s healthy but you mentioned the net presid I mean 160 165 million as far as the deferrals and how it looks like financially for the Dodgers I mean you’re talking about an organization that now is in the highest Stratosphere when it comes to paying the CBT I mean what can you say about this Dodgers organization and how that Otani contract is impacting them this offseason how aggressive they’re already showing to be by getting one of the top free agent arms available yeah well they’re making their money they’re they spending it a lot of people don’t uh you know think about the back in the days of George steber he is about the only guy who SP and every pen he had could care less about turning a profit and I think even John Milton of the Phillies had the great quote a year ago talking about the 1927 Yankees as they may remember if they turned a profit or not OB we know the Dodgers are going to turn a profit you know T thinging you know was a uh you know unbelievable so I still amazed that the Angels didn’t match that thing uh but you know with $2 million uh salary and $68 million deferred every year you know cost to dodge is about 43 a year really and they’re making more than that just on not only ticket sales but a uh promotions uh sponsorships tours coming in from Japan so I mean he’s the one guy not you know Aaron judge sells some tickets stto sells you know a few but nobody sells tickets like Otani that’s right Otani you know makes about $65 million a year off the field I think the next closest thing is about $6 or $8 million a year no one has ever been meant this much to baseball as far as sponsorship and stuff you know maybe says Babe Ruth yeah anywhere I mean look at I mean his box off his draw I mean if they just had a a Shon bobblehead night every single night that would pay for any player they really wanted but you look at some stories out there of him potentially making this team upwards of 100 plus million dollar per season I mean essentially paying for himself and then some but is that kind of the number where he’s at I mean making generating north of $100 million per season I don’t know if he’s making that high or if he’s bringing that kind of Revenue but I think it’s a uh over $50 million for share I know we made the Angels 25 million a year so I’m not sure it’s four times that but I could see twice that much for sure but yeah I mean that’s why season ticket prices are going up at Dodger Stadium and that’s why they spent $100 million doar renovating the uh the two clubhouses the home and the visitors I remember talking to Stan Caston uh late in the season I said Stan the home Clubhouse is pretty nice I can see why you’re doing the visiting he goes this an arms race we want to get the best free agents we want people to want to come here these share facilities and want to stay yeah it’s a nice little recruiting to I mean you go to the Dodgers compete for World Series titles you have the best amenities now as far as Blake Snell goes wanted to Circle back a little bit were there any other teams that were close to signing him I mean some runnerup teams we heard the Red Sox the Yankees had a zoom call that was reported but who was that team that was the next closest team to signing him uh I got to think it was the Boston Red Sox uh you know they’re willing to spend money they’re in the sto Streep Stakes they wanted you know two two of the three top of those top guys so they really need a left-hander so that’s right Max freed is going to make out like a banit you know I’m not saying wasn’t going to pay it anyway now he’ll really get paid so the Red Sox really want Snell and this is a much better deal for Snell in the sense that he’s from Seattle he’s used to West Coast I’m not sure how he would have fared in Boston that’s a tough place to pitch with the fans everything else I’m sure Corin Burns wanted to go there it’s probably tough for Corin Burns to see snelder or not him no who doesn’t want to pitch at Dodgers Stadium great pitchers Ballpark and obviously you know your World Series Contender you know every single year yeah Corin Burns Bakers field guy but I agree with you the West Coast Perfect Fit he’s played for the Giants played for the Padre’s now he’s playing for the right NLS team we’re going compete for a title now as far as where the Dodgers go from here their next move you still have to fill some spots in the out field and teoscar Hernandez he was fantastic in his one year with the Dodgers makes the All-Star game wins the Home Run Derby was fantastic in the postseason what can you tell us about where he stands right now yeah they’re probably letting him look around and say okay you know if someone blows us the water fine usually the Dodgers set a mark so okay if you’re willing to sign for this we’ll do it otherwise we’ll turn our attention somewhere else I think tasar Hernandez comes back he loved playing for the Dodgers and you saw during the postseason during the everybody raved about what a great teammate he was so I I think chasar Hernandez is back and then you kind of uh you know feel in from there uh but you know hey jasar hernandz decides not to come you know they’ll grab someone else they certainly uh enough outfiters are out there and they do have some depth just the returning guys they have and of course the other question is how does tasar Hernandez impact Juan SoDo now we’ve seen some reports Juan SoDo was offered by the Dodgers along with four other teams how serious do you think the Dodgers are when it comes to pursuing Wan sto I think you know they uh you know talk to Scott Boris but obviously they talked to Boris you know about snow yeah uh you know realistically I think there’s a better chance to you and I playing right 12 the Dodgers next year woto you don’t need him I just want to World Series without the guy and one thing to remember too Doug is that I’m not saying it was his fault but you’re the Dodgers you played the Padres a million times last few years why were the potteries so much of a better team last year without stto than they were with them I’m not saying you know s made a difference but obviously they were a better team playing much better so I think Soto’s you know staying in uh staying in New York I won’t rule out you know Boston or Toronto but I don’t think the Dodgers really in into it just they don’t need them why why bring him on yeah I just want to say Bob you made my day by saying I have a chance to play right field for the Dodgers so I want to thank you for that now as far as the stto sweep Stakes do you think that it’s linked to teoscar Hernandez I mean when do you expect a decision from te Oscar’s camp and do you think we could see something before the winter meetings and you already said that you think the Dodgers are the favorites to resign teoscar yeah I don’t think it really involves stto just because you’re only talking you know three four teams it’s not like you know to Oscar Hernandez is a big drop off financially so no I think uh he’ll look around I’m sure you know teams like Boston and Toronto and Phil hold off if they make some moves I think some teams probably have them on hold saying hold off now don’t sign yet because we want to you know trade away some of our surplus of outfielders and then go after you so he’ll make out quite well paid off for him sign the oneye contract just like it paid off for Blake Snell getting that you know opting after one year or two I agree I think that fitwise you make a fantastic point I mean teoscar was great for this team even that Padre’s team still very talented but they did have a great year and they were one win away from knocking off that Dodgers team and possibly winning their first World Series in franchise history so yeah I like the move they made last night re going out there signing Blake snow going after teoscar kind of getting more quantity and still getting quality that but then giving up five to six 700 million for one player in a Wan sto that has some defensive deficiencies could block a position here and there so I agree with you wholeheartly on that one want to ask you though about how the Blake Snell signing could impact Walker beer because last time we talked you told us that you thought the Dodgers probably has the inside track maybe a one-year Pro it deal after that Walker beer things started click in the postseason had 13 scoreless in the postseason got the final out of the World Series how much has things changed for Walker beer is his Market more robust than it was because of his performance in the postseason and where do you think the Dodgers stand with Walker beer right now well I can’t see ber coming back now same with Jack flare I mean obviously they could have kept berer about giving a qualifying offer I think deer would have taken it at 21 million yeah I’m sure they talked and said okay we’ll offer you you know say around 15 or so and uh he wasn’t interested so I think uh some teams will jump on buer and give him a you know nice fat one-year contract uh you know with a player option for second year then he you know jumps out and does it so yeah he was you know great in the postseason or solid post say but you know great in the back he came out the ninth inning in game five particularly being a free agent coming off the uh the surgery and everything else great team player so but I would doubt it now it’s like you know where does he actually fit you already have seven eight starters pretty shly like you said if you get the uh young pitch Europe Roki szaki from Japan there’s really no room for him or flare yeah and if you’re Walker beer too you want to be in a situation where you can almost did what what do what flarity did last season where you sign that one year Pro a deal you prove yourself you go reenter the market and you get s a nice contract with the Dodgers there’s a lot of quality pitches you just kind of wonder where he fits in the mix now you mentioned Roki Sasaki lots of speculation about Roki when it will be posted which team will sign him right now what do you think is the biggest factor in where he’ll ultimately sign I don’t think it’s U money at all I mean people talk about the Internationals you know uh cap people have Dodgers obviously have the most right now uh during the setting period if he waits till January 15th which what robod Manford thought he’s going to do uh you know then the Dodgers are came in the middle of the pack but you know what’s say what’s a couple million I mean he’s sacrificing over $200 million by coming out early just like Otani did that’s why Yamamoto waited till he was 25 he got 325 million out of it Otani got you know what two million out of it so same thing I don’t think money’s a factor at all he’s uh you know kind of a country kid uh so you know does he want to play with with his friends does he want to play with his mentor uh in Idol you know in the you darst in San Diego so speculation been there for a year they’s going to sign up the Dodgers that was a done deal obviously his agent Jo wolf denies that the Dodgers deny that so everybody wants him I mean he’s a uh a great young talent and Scouts will say you know better Talent than a uh you know than yamamota or orani uh number guys not not proven yet but raw so if he doesn’t sign sign with the Dodgers I think he signs with the padr pad are very hopeful cautiously optimistic I can’t see him going anywhere else so you have the two West Coast teams two NLS teams you said if you talk to 30 teams 30 of them think he’s going to the Dodgers but right now you feel like it’s a Dodgers Padres race and do you think he ultimately ends up with the Dodgers it’s still kind of up in the air I still think the Dodgers unless he wants to you know be his own brand if wants to say you know what you know where am I going to fit in there you know already you know just with with the Kershaw with the uh you know all the sa Youngs obviously Yamamoto you know you now uh you know now of course but Blake Snell it’s like a uh you know it’s like l in the totem P you know fourth and fifth where if he goes to San Diego you know San Diego needs them badly uh because after this season they lose on C the free agent uh you know they they lose a uh uh trying to think they lose a another one besides J C oh uh uh the picture they just got from my uh the Yankees uh that’s try I think yeah King yeah yeah Michael King yeah so they both those guys are free agents after this year yeah so they need some help they don’t have that kind of money uh they got some backload contracts where they’re gonna have some money crunch here coming up after this year so they really need him but for the Dodgers you get him man they’re set up for a long long time yeah then you got three of the best Japanese pitchers ever on the same team in a potential Dynasty I mean that definitely is gives me goosebumps it puts chills on Dodgers fans that’s for sure now couple more we got Bob Nale from USA Today joining us here on Dodgers Dugout live now Bob one of the big storylines as far as internal options and whether you do go external is the shortstop position Dodger general manager Brandon gome said a couple of weeks ago that mukie Betts is going to go back to the dirt playing the infield we don’t know is will he be back at the shortstop position now you have Tommy Edmund that played the shortstop position for the Dodgers in the postseason we go Roos is back you could try Gavin Lux back at the shortstop position then there’s Willie adamus out there the top free agent shortstop option what is your sense of what the Dodgers will do at shortstop you know I think they’ll put a price tag out there for willia doam say okay you’re really interested in coming here it’s going to take it or leave it we’re not going to get into a biding War for you uh you know that sort of thing so otherwise I think they kind of go internal I don’t see bets returning to shortstop he struggled when he was there now he’s a year older just keep him at second base and and leave him there so I mean obviously Roos can play the position uh you got guys can kind of you know fill fill in the Gap but you know they don’t need that Willie Damas uh you know don’t have to have that star guy and if they turn out they need him they’ll go get some help at the trade d line that’s sort of thing but except for adamus I don’t see them going you know big on uh on any of those guys I think they’ll say hey you want to play with us you want to have a chance to win a World Series want to play in front of packed houses every night uh you know marketing wise you want to be in La so they’re going to appeal to people that way so it feels like right now Blake Snell is going to be their biggest offseason signing then hopefully you resign to alar Hernandez if you’re the Dodgers maybe a Blake shrining you bring back from that standpoint any word on Blake trining do you think the Dodgers are the Front Runners to bring him back or what’s his market look like after the postseason that he had yeah I mean just the year he’s had I mean I’s had some injury problems in the past but I would think Blake uh Blake Tron is so comfortable there knows the trainers knows the way he was used the coaching staff Dave Roberts so I would think that certainly be the favorite they know him anybody else um he enjoyed himself pitching there so why wouldn’t you want to you know go back and have have a chance to win back-to-back World Series titles you know which hasn’t happened in the National League since the Big Red Machine y back in 7576 so it’ be cool be be part of history and the last question I want to ask you Bob and appreciate you have the answers to all the questions we’ve ever had in the world so thank you so much Bob Nale for joining us is how has the MLB World other teams out there I mean you have big markets like the Yankees and the Cubs and the Red Sox I mean how are they viewing what the Dodgers are doing right now it almost feels like the Rogers have this cheat code as far as otani’s contract as far as getting players to defer money they’re acquiring all this Talent now they have that 162 Game World Series that they always wanted and it feels like this is the beginning of like you mentioned a potential dynasty of the team that could go back toback how are teams viewing this Dodgers team around the league pretty much like back in the day with the Yankees with the Yankees that were all the free agents went they were the team that beat people love playing in New York marketing everything else and now was the Dodgers I mean you get to play in front of Full Houses every night I’m going to have a you know big beautiful Clubhouse uh everybody gets along that team very close nit team so there’s really only you know I think the only negative might be just fighting through traffic you know before games and after gam and that’s it and and you know California taxes are high but otherwise I mean it’s the premier destination where you know everybody wants to play for the Dodgers and I got to find it I remember when Andrew Freeman uh when they signed uh or hired Andrew Freeman remember writing like just rookie genius I got find that thing because as much as he’s done there I mean beyond what everybody imagined I mean he’s uh he’s GNA be Hall of Fame as a baseball executive but he’s done a wonderful job and the thing is too is not they’re not just buying but players uh Player Development is the best in all in baseball and they uh and they draft anybody else in baseball the player development’s been unbelievable I mean I you know they get guy they’re always straing last or next to last pretty much every single year but why are there drafts better than everybody else that’s picking the top five every year yeah absolutely you mention Andrew Freeman we have a saying here in dodgerland in fredman We Trust I love hearing you say that there’ll be a Hall of Fame executive one day with and fredman has already said he wants this to be the Golden Age of Dodger baseball well
