all right let’s hit the field well this is the week most experts agree that Juan sto is preparing to choose his next team it could be the Yankees it could be the Mets could be the Red Sox could be the Blue Jays could be the Dodgers and he’s expected to make his decision this week and then the announcement will be made at the winter meetings I’ll break down why I agree with that assessment and why the winter meetings could get crazy also we’ll talk about some of the improvements we’re making for next year’s postgame show and we’ll take a few of your voicemails the slow part of the winter is almost over and this is pinstripe territory just wanted to talk that’s [Applause] all all right welcome back everybody welcome back I just realized I had some fuzz on my shirt when I was recording the intro but we got it out of the way now hope everybody is having a nice off season and everybody had a nice Thanksgiving uh and we are at the point of the MLB offseason where it’s the Calm before the storm not a lot of moves happening right now teams are preparing for the winter meetings they’re getting offers they’re uh they’re meeting with players and we have a few reasons to believe that Juan SoDo is going to make his decision in the next few days possibly by like Wednesday or Thursday so that the announcement can happen at the winter meetings now the reason that I say that is that um MLB had a crummy crummy winter meetings last year and you can tell just from watching the way this offseason has unfolded they’re gearing up for a lot of movement at their Premier event so we’ll get to that in a few minutes but it’ll be interesting to see what juano ends up with contract it’s going to be a record contract the reason I say that is because every indication we’re getting from Boris and from the people who are in the know who are around baseball guys like Michael Kay and Jeff passon and so forth is that Soto wants to get the highest aav average annual value which right now is 46 is million so it’ll be higher than that and because he’s 26 years old that presents the opportunity to stretch this contract out to a point which you know like 14 years maybe 15 years if if it goes that far um where the money with that kind of aav adds up to close to a record deal and I think that you know Scott Boris wants to break that barrier he wants to uh pass the $700 million Mark he wants to pass the $50 million a season Mark I’m sure too so when you start to put the numbers together and just look at like what’s a realistic way that they can create some kind of a contract that satisi satisfies the three benchmarks the average annual value the total contract of 700 million by shohi even though a lot of that’s deferred and you you’d start talking about the $50 million a year barrier set setting three records at once you start to look at the numbers and it becomes about 14 years at 50.2 million ion that becomes a $ 72.8 million contract that’s kind of where I think most teams will end up with their offers now the Mets may offer more but anything above that is going to be icing on the cake I’m confident that the Yankees the Red Sox the Blue Jays and the meds are all going to be offering at least those three benchmarks so it’s going to come down to where he wants to play as T jawline says Juan is going to resign he wants this I think so I I I I you know I was leaning towards the Mets earlier this winter but I’m becoming more and more optimistic the more I think about it the Yankees have already supposedly made two offers and Hal steinbrener when he was talking to the press the other day sounded as serious as I’ve ever heard him he sounded as serious as a heart attack he wants to bring Juan sto back he knows what’s expected I don’t think any billionaire likes to be challenged by some other even if somebody’s got more money you know like uh you Steve Cohen has more money than Stein brener but Stein brener once you you get a billion dollars you run the Yankees you’re you got a little bit of an ego there’s got to be a little of an ego there somewhere where he doesn’t want to be outbid for his own player now he did say that the Yankees have the ability to sign any free agent that they want and we know that’s not true because they tried to sign Sho Otani few years ago they didn’t get him he was a free agent again they didn’t even make an offer to him and then yoshinobu Yamamoto wanted him last year he wanted to play out west so those are two instances that I can think of where the Yankees wanted the player and were willing to go to astronomical lengths and didn’t get them uh but if you’re Juan stto you know you’re going to get a record contract at this point you know it’s coming so you have to consider more than just your you know uh salary from baseball you have to consider things like taxes which can make a huge difference you have to consider sponsor ships you know and sort out the potential sponsorships that each brand has you know the Yankees the the Mets the the Red Sox the for instance the Yankees and the Mets play in the same city but the Yankees are number one in attendance and the Mets were 17th you know where do you think Nike wants to put a Wan stto billboard to advertise his new merch outside of Yankee Stadium or outside of City City Field or in Canada or LA or Boston those are the things that he has to consider from a business standpoint you have to think about him as more than just a baseball player he is definitely a business at this point in his career he has to consider winning potential now the Red Sox have won three championships in the 2000s but haven’t made the playoffs the last few years the Yankees only have one championship in the last 24 years the last quarter of a century and they’re in the playoffs more often than not but they haven’t been able to get over the hump other than 2009 this year they went to the World Series he got to experience that that’s got to count for something they never finish under 500 not since the early 90s that’s got to count for something you want to know that you’re going to have a chance to make the playoffs every year and the Yankees have that the Mets haven’t won a World Series since 86 do we really think they’re going to start winning every year and say what you want about Cohen he’s extremely rich but he’s a novice as an owner who’s already made some mistakes he had to buy his way out of mistakes with you know Justin Verlander with Max Scherer but you also have to consider the cultural fit is juano a better fit in New York home to the largest Dominican population in the United States approximately 700,000 Dominican residents or Boston where they have a Dominican population of 37,000 but there’s a lot of Hardcore Baseball fans there because of what Pedro Martin Martinez did when he was a member of the uh Red Sox or does he go to Toronto where they have three Dominican dudes when you’re talking about 13 or 15 years of your career you have to be thinking long term not just your salary you have to be thinking about your legacy right now stto has played for three different teams he began with the Nationals he went to the Padres and now he’s with the Yankees Alex Rodriguez had a similar Arc he began with seven years with the Mariners parts of seven years he then went on to the Rangers as a free agent got the record contract and then he got traded to the Yankees where he spent 13 years now most people will say when they think of Alex Rodriguez they think of him as a Yankee and as well known as he was to basball fans right when he was with the Mariners or with the Rangers I mean was seen as a fantastic baseball player but he became a household name when he became a Yankee you know he became for a few years there um the biggest trade acquisition since Babe Ruth when they got him it was supposed to be the biggest move since the bay and he did win two MVPs with the Yankees and he won his only title with the Yankees but his legacy was tarnished by his own Deeds with steroids and so forth if SoDo keeps his head on straight more than A-Rod did which is not going to be hard to do he obviously doesn’t have the same kind of rivalry that Jeter and A-Rod had as he with judge they seem to be buddies right judge has been extremely accepting and welcoming maybe he does want to be the man but something to be said about a tandem too right Ortiz and Manny right Schilling and Johnson tandems win uh and he’s got a chance to what A- Rod could have been and should have been which was the biggest acquisition since Babe Ruth now some people on social media are saying that he’s going to the Red Sox you’ve got Randy Miller saying that the Yankees are out of the bidding but these are not exactly the cream of the crop as far as baseball reporting goes so I wanted to offer as we approach the final stretch here a rule of thumb that I have unless it comes from Jeff passon Ken Rosenthal Jack Curry or Buster only I take it with a huge grain of salt those are my guys those as so far as the Yankees are concerned those are my guys if they’re saying it I believe it if it comes from you know John hayon he’s a mouthpiece for agents and he got the arson judge thing wrong I still respect him as a a journalist but he jumps the gun he wants to be first passing Rosenthal Curry only these are guys who want to be right they want to be right they don’t care about about being first they want to be right which is the number one Instinct of a true journalist right that’s what a lot of these so-called Twitter insiders right they that’s what they get wrong about journalism journalism is about getting the story right and first if you can but right is is the most important thing so look for the big names passing Rosenthal Jack Curry Buster only those are my guys um I do think it’ll happen this week he’ll agree to a contract by Wednesday or Thursday I expect a physical Friday or Saturday and then I expect a announcement at the winter meetings which I think are going to get crazy this year now you won’t hear MLB talk about this they won’t put it out in a press release but winter meetings are their major moneymaker during the off season it’s where MLB Network gets the bulk of its ad Revenue all the stuff that follow is that the breakdown of the moves and things it it drives people to consume their their media and there’s money in that because there’s advertising in that and last year’s winter meetings were just straight up dooky they were a snoozefest Scott Boris had three free agents he had four actually he had Blake Snell Matt Chapman Cody Bellinger and Jordan Montgomery he was asking for like a 100 plus million from everybody for everybody I should say and nobody got more than 80 I think it was Bellinger got 80 million you know if you factor in that he you know doesn’t opt out or whatever um but he held everybody out through the winter meetings and that prevented a lot of moves from happening you know uh he held some of them out to pitchers and catchers began he potentially ruined Jordan Montgomery’s season he ruined the first half of Blake Snell’s season Montgomery even fired bours after that which is something you don’t see very often and he came out and publicly trashed him it was an embarrassment for Boris it was an embarrassment for baseball and I think that quietly MLB has told Scott Boris we can’t have that again and he he’s told other agents get your butt in gear we got to get these s guys signed over the winter meetings for the health of the sport hold off trade announcements things like that Blake’s now already off the board obviously taking a different approach to the offseason and ml from a business side cannot permit another slow boring off seon they have got to have something happen so let’s take a look at who’s available I mentioned Blake Snell’s off the board you say kuchi is already signed with the Angels but given what’s happened last year I’d bet dollars to Donuts that we’re going to have some activity at this winter meeting so you see stto at top the uh free agent board still got Willie adamus out there Pete Alonzo Alex bregman Corbin Burns I would not be shocked I would not be shocked at all if the Yankees pivot to Corbin Burns if Soto signs elsewhere because they’re going to have the money to spend they’re going to want to make a splash we saw Garett Cole have the elbow issue last year and you could argue that the Yankees health of their pitching is a big reason that they got through the season the way they did now you pair you know SoDo with or sorry uh Corbin burns with garri Cole and add in an emerging Luis heel that drops Carlos rhon rhon back to number four in your rotation and allows you to use Clark Schmidt as number five guys that is a hell of a fiveman rotation and you’re talking about run prevention since you’re going to be losing some offense that’s if stto goes elsewhere Jack flare is an option Max freed is somebody that I have heard compared to Jimmy ke which if you remember the Yankees from the 90s you know how important Jimmy ke was to the Yankees winning that World Series in 96 tasar Hernandez somebody who could be on the Yankees radar if you believe the reports if Soto signs elsewhere and if if Soto does sign elsewhere I expect the Yankees to move fast and furious they’re talking to all these agents they’re getting their ducks in a row I expect them to drop three or four counter punches if stto signs elsewhere because especially if he signs with the Mets they’re going to want to take back the headlines too they’ll let Cohen have his 15 minutes but then they’re going to go back into being the big big bad Yankees as I mentioned Stein bren’s ego he’s not going to allow someone else to take the back page from him Tanner Scott somebody I really want the Yankees to get from a baseball perspective he’s not a star like a a well-known household name but he is an excellent pitcher and he will do a lot for the Yankees who need to rebuild a bullpen that is you know losing some guys via free agency I’ve also heard that the Yankees could be considering bringing back clay Holmes for a middle relief role so that’s something to keep your eyes on Anthony santand there switch hitter with power not much of a hitter for average 235 this year but massive power would do enormous damage in Yankee Stadium Tyler O’Neal probably going back to Boston Big Time power another guy who has difficulty staying healthy because he is so big he’s just a big strong dude a lot of times those musclebound guys have trouble staying healthy and then Christian Walker somebody who I’ve seen a lot of yan fans say they want he’s somebody to consider as a first baseman Big Time power excellent defense he is a little bit long in the tooth and then there’s trade candidates we talked about Cody Bellinger the other day with Patrick money from the athletic I recommend that podcast if you didn’t watch it Garrett crochet is still out there he’s been rumored in a deal to the Phillies which would also involve one of these other guys Alec bone who got benched in the playoffs but you know he’s got all the talent in the world he’s just kind of a um he he’s apparently had some maturity issues Devin Williams closer for the Brewers Ryan helsley relief pitcher for the Cardinals who are taking a step back this year to kind of reset and try and focus on their core it makes sense to try and build that core by moving one of your high leverage relief pitchers Brandon laau I don’t think that the Rays would trade him to the Yankees but a couple years ago there was a move where ikf got moved twice in the same off seon I could see a situation where if La gets moved to another team the Yankees could try and get him still Jordan Montgomery probably going to be traded could a reunion work out Ryan McMahon somebody the Yankees fans have loved for years third baseman with the um Colorado Rockies Luis Robert Jr nicoo horer Jonathan India all guys and and India just got moved to the uh actually we got to take him off the list he just got moved to the Royals so I just forgot to update the list there but he’s off the board we’re seeing the board in real time so you know obviously a lot of potential for for stuff to happen here at the winter meetings guys if you’re just joining I see we have over a thousand in the chat uh we start we talked about stto earlier for about 15 minutes I believe he is signing in the next few days or agreeing to a contract in the next few days then a physical and then winter meetings announcement uh which winter meetings begin in one week so stay tuned for that all right so a lot of you who’ve been following for the last few years know that the the channel uh has evolved over the years we began as kind of like a highlight show where we you know talked about the game for a few minutes showed some highlights can’t really use highlights as much anymore MLB has really cracked down so you know we signed with the foul territory network uh this summer and we have kind of really put the emphasis more on the content uh you know the the verbal content the podcast portion of it less Graphics but uh I am making some additions to the show some things that I think you’re going to like I’ve been you know factoring in all the feedback we get and you know we will talk about uh that but we got some new things to show off so um first off the thumbnails are going to be a little bit different next year I’ll probably show this a few times before the season just so you guys are familiar with it uh we are updating the thumbnails you see the old thumbnails on the left for the postgame show new ones on the right I wanted to have a little bit bigger artwork on the right uh you know I wanted to really showcase the the images because uh YouTube is allowing for bigger images now bigger thumbnails so I wanted to take advantage of that we’ve got some 3D elements in with the uh the logos now I think they’ll really pop uh when you guys see them uh we’ve got um the favorite part of everybody’s show is obviously the belt uh we have the player of the game every single night and that’s the belt belt winner every single you know time the Yankees win that’s the belt winner and we’ve got a new belt [Applause] award and just showcasing wano also we’ve got camera two we’ve got a multi- cam situation here where um I might be able to even showcase that a little bit hang on just a second we’ll get to that but uh we’ve got um obviously a new belt background we’re going to keep track of the belts right here on this screen I’ll have like a an overlay that that counts down uh the belt winners so we’ll always know how many everyone’s got that’ll be fun um got some new front ends and we’re introducing a new award this this year it’ll definitely happen for losses uh It won’t always be a Yankees player sometimes I’m sure it’ll be an Umpire sometimes it’ll be a fan who interferes you know uh maybe a a cat runs on the field and and and um and delays the game um we will have a bum of the night and you know that is on Yankees so apologies here to Carlos rodon he is my model for the bum of the day but we will have a bum of the day we’ll always have it for losses I’m sure sometimes we’ll have it for wins but this is a new feature I just felt like a lot of people were waiting around wanting to see the belt winner so when we do the um you know when we do the show we’ll go through the recap we’ll talk about all our main topics and then we’ll finish off each night uh with the awards and then we’ll switch over to like the audience reactions and audio but uh you know we’ll we’ll we’ll we’ll walk through all this as the season begins but I’m confident the show will be much improved and much easier for me next year with all this new content that we’re adding uh we got a new audience reaction screen uh that we will go to now as we prepare to take a few voicemails here let’s begin with a voicemail about ran SoDo hey Derek how you doing love the show uh this is Chris from andj but I want to ask if you think they res sign shto which you know you hope they do um you think there’s a chance that they could sign another big guy even if it’s like Christian Walker who’s probably not as expensive stto maybe in the 20 mil range but you think they can still bring in like a bman or snil with the payrolls how whatever how set in 300 mil going over that let me know your opinion thank you love the show to you I I think part of bringing back stto is going to be you know acknowledging that the team needs to make other improvements right when the Yankees resigned Aaron judge they told him there were going to be improvements remember Stein burner came out and said oh we’re not done we’re not done but turns out they were done um they were done and you know I feel like they’re going to have to make the same uh promise to Juan SoDo but this time they’re gonna have to fulfill it because judge’s gonna be in his ear make sure they make sure they go out and get somebody um I really think that um they’re they’re going to go all in to try and get over the hump this year they know that the Dodgers are super team out there I feel like the Yankees are one of the best teams in the American League again uh if they bring back stto so you know we’ll see how it shakes out uh we got another voicemail here from chain hey Derek chain I just thought I’d weigh in on the Cody Bellinger uh program that you had uh I got a kick out of your guest yeah Patrick M yeah I think everybody had like pitching uh for somebody like Cody Bellinger who is a nice player he’s a nice player uh has nice stats would probably be nice in Yankee Stadium but we’ve got too many nice players like John Carlos St he’s a nice player he’s had some big moments but there are no rings for the 10-year uh contract stand catch and strange nice players I just don’t think we ought have uh waste any time on uh with the looking it appears that we’re going to lose Stan or uh sto which is too bad I think he would have been a good fit the other thing about Bellinger he’s too old I mean you know he has a good year and then he wants 10 years after he has that good year no all right so Bellinger is only 29 we don’t know what he’s asking for he’s actually a uh he’s under contract for the next season uh and then he’s got another opt out so and I don’t I don’t like John Carlo catching Strays there after he helped us get to the World Series so you know let’s just take it easy I think my cat uh Dexter wants to get in the show here he wants to be famous all right talking Blake snow here dere it’s Brian just saw Blake Snell signed with the Dodgers Rich keep getting rich pretty uh pretty awesome got it handed to him they uh they keep going for it um I wanted to say though U quick uh quick idea throw it out there see what you thought of it um I’ve seen uh I think it was the Korean League there uh is going to be posting High song Kim and he I think he’s a lefty he uh played with Hong Kim pretty much almost the same name but uh battery Partners middle infield Partners a lefty he’s hit uh it’s over 300 the last three seasons doesn’t have much pop but I was curious what you thought if we uh threw him up the Middle with VY uh maybe try to get uh you know hopefully it’s 260 280 would be incredible and get a pesky little hitter in the middle of contact kind of something different from what they would usually do and hopefully still get SoDo if not go after something somebody like uh Luis Robert um yeah just want to hear what you thought let’s go Yanks gotta get it this year man gotta get it I you know I’ll admit I I don’t know much about this Korean player I’m I’m skeptical of foreign position players pitchers you know 100 mile hour fastball translates right and you can you know see the metrics in you know spin rate and things like that and there’s pretty good you know uh translation between you know what somebody does in Japan or or South Korea or whatever and when they come to America you you can tell what pitches are going to be effective and things like that like we knew Yamamoto threw hard we knew he had a good curveball we knew he could spot it hitters are a little bit trickier because the pitching at large isn’t as good overseas uh I I’m just a little skeptical right I’d rather go with a proven guy up the middle um I know a lot of people like Caleb Durban top prospect we did a podcast about him to me the exit velocity of 83 mph is a little bit suspect I don’t know if he’s bunting a lot I mean he’s a speedy guy or whatever but I’m just a little bit I’m just a little bit worried about that I would rather go with a proven player up the middle uh I think gabber Tores is definitely gone especially if they sign Juan sto now if Juan sto signs elsewhere all options are on the table maybe you bring glaber back on a one-year Pro it deal but I I think we could do without his his baseball IQ without his base running blunders and without his League leading errors total at second base so I I I think despite Torres hitting well in the in the playoffs out of the leadoff spot really after he got moved to the leadoff spot late in the season he was great and after the benching but um I think he’s gone for sure uh so that’s that’s going to leave a hole I mean you could go with jazz Chism who’s a natural second baseman he came up as a second baseman but you’re losing one of his weapons because one of his weapons is his great arm which then only becomes valuable on relay throws and on the back end of double plays like a a 6 43 or a 543 double play now he’s still uh a rangy player which I think will make up for some of that you know lost tool you know you’ll be gaining range at second base but then you got a backfill third base bregman sounds like could be a fit for his former manager AJ hinch with the Tigers that’s kind of where the foul territory team that um has been breaking all this stuff down daily seems to think he’s going to land I agree with that assessment I thought he’d be a good fit for the Blue Jays also you know George Springer went up there he might be hey you know we’re we’re we’re trying to get to the playoffs come help us out but I also could see him going back to the Astros the Astros are aggressive they’re trying to bring him back and a lot of times if if a team’s trying to bring somebody back um you know if they’ve done some winning there he’ll go so you know you got a fan base there already pre-existing um but I I I just don’t see bregman as as much as I think he would be a good fit offensively and defensively with this team I don’t see him coming to the Yankees which means you know you’d have to figure out something else for third base uh maybe Oswaldo Cabrera finally gets the shot right uh but he didn’t exactly crush the baseball this year he had some good moments but he also had some downtime so be interesting to see how it shakes out all right we got Booker hey good morning Derek this is Booker again like I had told you earlier um cassine messed his team up so they’re going to have to dwarf the New York Mets offer by at least $50 million the life of a contract for him to come back to the Yankees Yankee Roster is old and Antiquated and not that old if I were if you or me were signing you would not sign with the Yankees over the Mets that’s just flat out wrong don’t tell me where I would sign I would absolutely signed with the Yankees over the Mets and not because I’m a Yankees fan I you know if I had a chance to hit in front of Aaron judge I’m going to get more pitches to hit um you know Jason Dominguez a young upand coming upand cominging Dominican player switch hitter uh great eye a chance to work with SoDo and learn the ropes and become an absolute star I think he knows how good Dominguez is g to be I really think that Dominguez is gonna be better this year forget what you saw he was coming back from an injury he was you know it was just a weird situation last year he screwed up a couple of plays in the field and it kind of became The Yips but he he’s a better player than that he’s going to be fine um you know the pitching on the Yankees is better and healthier you just made it to the World Series and like I said you got to consider more than just your salary you have to consider your legacy you have to consider your endorsements you have to consider the brand deals that you know uh each organization has the Yankees are a more established brand than the Mets that’s just the way it is right you’re G to have Nike and and didas and all these different uh brands that want to be associated with the Yankees want to be associated with Juan SoDo now the Mets have theirs too but not to the degree that the Yankees have I just realized my marker must have be bleeding on me I’m covered in in all right ladies and gentlemen we are going to call it a day enjoy football hopefully we’ll be back with some SoDo news over the next few days and as always post your comments in the chat comment like
