MLB Baseball has a major issue with Free agency, and it goes a lot deeper than just a few issues. From the reporting being an absolute mess, with Juan Soto maybe having offers from the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, New York Yankees and maybe even the Los Angeles dodgers, there just isn’t much that is known from these reports. Not only that, but superstars don’t really get into free agency very often and because of that Mike Trout and Bobby Witt JR will never hit free agency. Let’s hope it gets better for baseball in the future!

Major League Baseball has one of the biggest free agencies in all of sports however there are a few major factors that hold it back from being even better than it could be this should be the part of the off season that has every fan excited and locked into Twitter and other news sites to see exactly what’s happening however it just doesn’t tend to work like that for multiple reasons so let’s jump right into them the first major issue with free agency is the fact that there’s no salary cap or salary floor and this works both ways either owners are spending to much money or owners are spending not enough money owners like Steve Cohan who are just so rich he’s one of the wealthiest men in the entire world and especially in America he’s so rich that he can just go out and get whoever he wants whenever he wants and not worry about what it’s going to do for the future and this is all while John fiser the owner of the Athletics and no longer the Oakland Athletics because he was too cheap to build a stadium pretends that he is poor when he has a $3.2 billion net worth this net worth is more than Hal steinbrener of the New York Yankees so the Oakland Athletics are richer than the Yankees when you really break it down however the Yankees make more money and Oakland pretends like they are poor so Oakland does not play for free agent these owners could every single owner in Major League Baseball is a billionaire and they all make profits every single year especially with something called Revenue sharing which is where teams like the Yankees Red Sox Dodgers and Mets who make a lot of money from TV deals get to share it with with the lower Market teams that don’t make as much money in Revenue because of this it makes it even more inexcusable that John fiser is getting money from these high Market teams and not reinvesting it back into baseball he is literally just pocketing money that he did not even earn that the Red Sox earned or that the Yankees earned or that the Dodgers earned one of these other teams that actually cared about their franchise earned this money and John Fisher puts it in his pocket and does not reinvest it into his base me so not having a salary floor hurts free agency because you know there are going to be teams that are not active in it the Cleveland Guardians the Miami Marlins the Oakland Athletics they’re not going to be active they’re just not going to be because there’s no floor and the MLB is not telling them that they have to be again they could be if they wanted to be they don’t want to MLB doesn’t force them so they don’t but it does make a little bit of an issue when Cohen of the Mets is willing to just spend as much money as humanly possible to win when other teams actually can’t do that the next thing that makes free agency pretty terrible at times is how long it takes it just takes forever free agency always starts 5 days after the World Series concludes which is almost always the first week of November or even earlier and it really doesn’t get going until the second week of December when winter meetings take place and that’s not even accounting for the fact that last year Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery didn’t sign until March March is 5 months after free agency started that’s a lot of rumors that’s a a lot of annoyance and that’s a lot of fans waiting for billionaires to stop sitting on their hands and sign a contract it’s just extremely frustrating to watch something like that happen and take place for so long especially when you account for the fact that Scott Boris exists and this is my third biggest reason on its own Scott Boris as a whole is a problem for free agency this guy is a super agent he has many of the top players that hit free agency every single year and all he cares about is money which I understand he’s an agent his job is to get his players the most money because then he gets more money I understand that however Scott Boris he will wait until the last possible second to try to gain as much money as possible Jordan Montgomery even called out Scott Boris last off season and even fired his agent because Scott Boris was doing such a poor job of marketing Montgomery and didn’t have him sign a contract until the middle of March and then he had the worst season of his career I can understand why that bothered Jordan Montgomery so much hopefully Scott Boris doesn’t do the same thing as well this year because he has won SoDo Blake Snell and Corbin Burns as all of free agents that he is the agent for once again that could seriously slow down the market if he holds on to these guys and doesn’t let them sign contracts but Boris is not as bad as the reporting for Major League Baseball during the off season don’t even get me started with the reporting you know exactly who I’m talking about too the John Haymon the Bob night andales the hector Gomez everyone that isn’t named Jeff passen every time they talk you’re just like I I can’t even believe this so you’re just sitting there being lied to the entire off seon and you’re just waiting for Jeff passen to say breaking Juan stto has signed with blank because Hector Gomez is going to say something that makes no sense John Haymon is going to say that the New York Yankees are going to sign every single player on the market because he is Scott boris’ puppet and Bob Nightingale is going to spell every single word wrong remember when John hayon said that arson judge was headed to the New York Giants New York Giants that would be really crazy remember when John Haymon said that arson judge was headed to the San Francisco Giants that didn’t happen but you know that’s ml reporting for you they’re just wrong all the time they they just go as fast as humanly possible and they’re just wrong the reporting is just bad I like to listen to local sources because I think that they’re better than the national sources especially John Haymon and Bob Nightingale those guys are horrible I’d much rather listen to my Red Sox reporters I think it’s much more accurate and if your team has good reporters I would listen to them over the national guys except Jeff passen because what he says is true now I just mentioned Juan SoDo and of course that’s going to lead into this next part there are really only a couple of teams that are always in on the big free agents the Red Sox the Dodgers and the Yankees and now the Mets the Phillies and Padres are also times in on them of course there’s sometimes outliers like George Springer going to the Blue Jays and Carlos kareah going to the twins but most teams just really don’t play on the top free agents on the market it just doesn’t really happen yes part of that is because of Mega deals but part of that is because owners like John fiser want you to assume that they can’t afford the mega deals when they can John fiser can afford Corbin Burns if he wants to it’s probably going to be $200 million over 7 years John Fisher’s net worth is again $3.2 billion and that’s without the revenue coming in over the next 7 years which is obviously going to be at least more than 200 million even though they’re playing at a minor league ballpark even though all their fans are pissed off at them even though their ballpark was falling apart for years before that they’re still going to make over $200 million in Revenue easily so they could be in on Corbin Burns if they wanted to be however they don’t want to be so they aren’t the Red Sox haven’t been in on big free agents either up until this off season over the past couple they’ve been out of it too and the Dodgers have just signed everyone the Phillies have been in on a lot of people since Dave dembrowski took over because he is a GM that loves to sign players and the Padre’s as well they’ve been interested in a lot of players too and especially in the trade market so let’s go Padre’s for being a somewhat low Market team and being a little active in free agency and the Giants too I should give the Giants a little bit of credit they’ve been active as well they don’t always sit back and I guess the Cubs there are a couple of teams but you know who the big ones are going to be when the woto report came out you went okay he’s going to the Mets yanes or Dodgers because he didn’t think that the Red Sox would do it now the Red Sox are in a little bit and the Blue Jays maybe are in a little bit but I don’t buy that so now it’s like okay the four teams that are in on everyone are in on the big free agent here’s a shocker that’s one of the bigger issues too because there’s just no parody in free agency there’s a lot of parody in baseball in general but not in free agency that’s another issue and part of the reason for that is most of the insane players don’t even go to free agency if they’re on high Market teams like Mike Trout Rafael De Mookie Betts yes he got traded but he got extended before he touched free agency these guys generally don’t touch free agency sure there are a lot of outliers as well like Aaron judge obviously like I just mentioned Juan stto is in free agency right now Bryce Harper Manny Machado but the last two were not on high Market teams before they hit free agency now along with that things are changing a little bit Bobby Wht Jr is a great example because the Royals are not a high Market team whatsoever but they extended their Superstar before he’s going to hit free agency he’s now going to hit free agency at like 34 years old if not older so they’re not really going to have enough money to go out and get another superstar in free agency which is fine because you should be extending your guys but now we’re also never going to see Bobby Whit Jr in a free agency when he’s in his prime which is a little disappointing for Baseball fans I’m sure because Bobby Whit Jr is a freak of nature baseball player I just mentioned this but I’m going to go a little deeper into it now when players do get to free agency they’re generally out of their Prime they are old when you get to MLB free agency rookie contracts are 3 years of a rookie contract then 3 years of arbitration then you’re a free agent 7 years into your career you get to become a free agent if you come up at even 22 years old you’re 29 by the time you’re signing a contract and by 32 you’re out of your Prime so you’re only getting 3 years of a prime baseball player when you sign a mega deal and most of the time these bigname free agents get 10 plus year contracts so basically most of these players just are not going to be worth their Mega deal which again holds teams back from doing it especially the lower Market teams that do not have the most money to spend if the Yankees have one bad Mega deal on their payroll it’s not a big deal because the Yankees make so much money but if the Reds make a mega deal and it doesn’t work well well Cincinnati just isn’t bringing in the same kind of money that New York is so now they’re in deep trouble financially and because of that they’re not going to be able to really go after it in free agency so this is why a lot of teams are afraid of these Mega deals especially because a lot of them haven’t worked it’s not just the age they just haven’t been working for example Mike Trout has has been injured basically every single year since he signed the biggest contract extension in MLB history Jacob deg Grom was a known injured player the Rangers gave him a 5-year deal he’s been injured since he signed that deal Albert phols was too old to play baseball once he signed that contract he only had one or two good years on the Angels before he was bad for the remaining eight or nine Steven strawber again got injured immediately after winning World Series MVP and getting a massive contract Anthony randone can’t stay on the field I mentioned five contracts here three of them have been angels that poor organization has been brutally attacked by luck I can’t really comprehend how they’ve gone through so much damage but now I’m sure low Market teams are saying will Wan sto be the same thing if we have to give him 12 years as he really going to be Wan stto and when he’s 38 years old there’s a chance he’s not going to be and this is part of the reason why free agency is a problem I really just hope that free agency gets a little update soon because I think it’s not as fun as it could be if free a agcy had like a 2 we signing period where every single player had to sign if they were going to get a Mega deal and it just was super fastpaced and you got like 10 signings every day and I know that that’s what winter meetings are for but that’s a month and a half into free agency I wish that it just happened right away right when free agency started then you could get all this flood of rumors and all this flood of signings and you could get super excited for your team in the season or you’re disappointed going into the season but at least you know quickly cuz now you might wait 3 months and hoping that you sign someone and you never sign anyone and then you’re still disappointed going into the season either way hopefully they change free agency at least a little bit somewhat soon because it could be a lot better than it is if you enjoyed feel free to subscribe because most of my viewers are not subscribed thanks for watching I will see you in the next video
