[Applause] hello everybody and welcome to the devil’s digest postgame show following Arizona State’s 90 to 53 victory over San Diego here at Desert Financial Arena the sun levels now improved to 8 And1 on the season as always my name is Justin leer that’s publisher H orbino and H the sundevils if you watch this game it’s pretty evident they came out pretty slow maybe a little bit of Thanksgiving hangover after that great Palm Springs tournament where they came out on top but eventually kicked it into gear yeah and I think head coach Bobby Hurley was honest enough to admit that uh he was taking it just a little too light uh on on the team on the practices earlier this week and look I mean in some ways he maybe can’t fault his way of thinking because you look at it as ASU played essentially eight games in about 24 days in in the month of November so when you figure out the averages uh that is a a lot of games in a very dense schedule obviously the two games in Palm Springs were were were back-to-back performances so uh just uh you letting the foot off the gas pedal a little in terms of intensity and practices would would probably be the the pretty thing to do unfortunately the team at least in the first half uh did not respond well to that so uh Bobby Hurley said that he’s going to take a different approach from here on out uh but uh you know Thanksgiving hangover or not uh you would expect ASU to come out U much better um even though they did lead at at halftime this game had uh one of those halftime comeback feels uh to uh to it because they played absolutely lights in the second half so it’s just one of those things where um some Valu Lessons Learned and how to prepare for a game but it’s always good to have those lessons after a win then then after a loss and that’s the case in Arizona States and you mentioned the slow start ASU fell down to San Diego 17 to5 at a point in that first half but eventually again they kicked it into gear and that second half the offense really started to run and we saw that balance on full display yeah I think that Zone by San Diego really really did affect ASU uh they were missing a lot of open shots to begin the game and I think that almost really enticed San Diego to uh to actually throw the Zone uh more uh more often in in that first half but when a was able to effectively attack the Zone with good ball movement uh a lot of um uh dishes to the paint uh that that obviously helped uh but the biggest thing that helped Jan sonan the absolute sniper uh from from from the outside had 13 of his 19 points in in the first half and as we know the best way to bust his own is to start grading those those uh those three-point shots or even just uh just jump shots in general and when San was able to do that uh that obviously really frustrated uh San Diego quite a bit and that just opened uh matters that much more for the for the entire team in second half I really feel like the defense really fueled the offense uh but uh it really was just an onslaught not only San but bash Jihad uh BJ Freeman um Sonam by the way his third game in a row where he scored 19 points if you recall he was the MVP of that uh palmm Springs tournament scoring 19 points in each of each of those wins against New Mexico and St Mary’s he scores 19 points again uh tonight five of eight uh Bashir Jihad also had 19 points uh had maybe somewhat of a slow start but uh did end up shooting a five of 11 Altin Austin Mason the point guard did have 10 points BJ Freeman also started a little little slow but did have 14 points and um and Jayden Quon uh came one rebound shy away from a double double had 10 10 to nine uh but uh did a lot of lot of nice work on the defensive side we’ll talk about that in a second but basically when you have all your star players that just just come to play uh I just feel like this ASU team can out shoot almost anybody in in in in the country but again I think the defense really helped him quite a bit uh in the second half yeah and that defense really found its spark only held San Diego to just 20 points in the second half and led by none other than Jaden quainton the anchor of that defense what have you seen out of asu’s Defense kind of holistically and also in this game yeah J Jane Quon uh you know five five blocks which almost is like a ho home performance for him ASU has a team did did have 10 blocks um absolutely dominated uh the boards um uh and had a 15 rebound Edge um over there and that’s something you definitely don’t don’t see on a regular from from from from an ASU team I just thought that uh the halftime uh speech by Bobby hurling and the staff was uh probably quite the the tongue lashing because uh the effort that they came out in the second half especially on defense was absolutely just uh you know you know night and day um you know they did uh they did limit uh San Diego to um uh 20 26.7% shooting in in in the second half and obviously when you’re going to suffocate your opponent that much uh you’re definitely going to win a lot of games and that that definitely was the case today you know what I like about jayen Quon just the whole team that it’s not it’s not only just uh the the block shots and the rebounding but you see him just uh diving for diving for loose balls really really playing with a lot of intensity a little surprised maybe we didn’t see a lot of halfcourt pressure maybe that was the only uh defensive uh approach that as did not employ but uh it was it was just an absolute uh dominance in the second half like you said when you limit somebody to for 20 points I almost feel like you know if it’s not broken don’t fix it maybe they didn’t didn’t really need the half court press uh you know that much but I think uh you know you can look at the 90 points scored and you can say okay this this CC offense just continues to impress but I think you really have to be impressed by the defensive efforts that they’re showing uh lately even against St Mary’s if you remember that wasn’t a shootout by any means and a lot of a lot of the wins that a who had this year really were shootouts they really were able to uh display a lot of defensive chops against St Mary’s obviously playing a much inferior opponent uh tonight but but nonetheless uh to see ASU play that that level of Defense especially in the second half and I would say also maybe the the last five seven minutes of the first half uh definitely just St you know feels offense that more um they have um a dozen a dozen fast break uh points uh and um that the basically just really just keeps that offensive machine humming and uh if they they can really just uh you know can keep that approach I think they can really just continue on a great successful season that they’re having so far so yeah ASU is now eight and one on the season and more of the non-conference late is behind them then in front of them and a little bit of a lighter December in terms of just games and scheduling but Bobby Hurley talked about he’s kind of thinking about changing some of the regimens to help this team prepare for some even tougher competition down the line what do you expect to see out of the rest of this non conference L for ASU yeah I think it’s will Justin’s almost going to be like a a preseason camp if you will uh they got a game on the 14th against against Florida uh neutral Court a game uh on the 21st against UMass semi- neutral Court I mean I think it’s like a stone throw away from campus over there uh and then uh then on 31st they open Big 12 play uh at at BYU on the road so I think just having the all that Gap uh between um between games uh can really uh just help them mentally and physically heal and uh just really work on some of the fundamentals uh that maybe Bobby Hurley thinks that uh still still to be worked on um you know don’t forget it’s still still a fairly short rotation without the Services atin Austin Nunes so I think these these players are definitely uh you know feel feeling the toll um of of the schedule again uh essentially playing eight games in about 24 days in the month of November when you have a short rotation to begin with uh you know that’s that’s something that uh ASU was really able to survive and survive very very well as evident in the 8 in one record so now uh to uh really navigate of okay when when am I just taking my my foot off the gas pedal in terms of intensity and when am I when I’m just ramping it up to to make sure that they’re sharp um it’s going to be a task that I think maybe somewhat challenging for Bobby Hurley uh but like I said earlier I think it was great that Bobby Hurley uh felt that uh he did have a wrong approach uh coming coming in tonight he did admit to that and now he knows what you know what to do better and he has just such long periods in between games uh uh to work that uh I think that’s just really really just uh fits hand to GL hand to glove for ASU and in terms of what they’re trying to accomplish the game of the 14th against Florida it’s in the neut neutral Corner in Atlanta that’s going to be huge Florida as we speak uh is still undefeated number seven in in in in the net rankings so you talk about all the statement wins that ASU had up until now if they can beat the Gators on the 14th that is probably the biggest statement win at least in the non-conference uh portion of of of the schedule but uh right now I think if you’re an ASU fan you have to be very very pleased with what what you’re seeing from this team again it’s not only the offensive power which is really just off the charts compared to what we saw not only last year but I think just in years even before that but I think the defensive intensity uh against St mares against San Diego um I’m really liking what I’m seeing on that in court for ASU and if they can find that balance between offense and defense they’re going to be a tough out even in a very challenging Big 12 well H Arizona State once again takes care of business at Desert Financial Arena to stay locked in on all the coverage good to devil digest.com follow Devil’s digest on Twitter at Devils digest
