I can I just say I don’t love this I don’t love the teams that go play in Seattle to play Gonzaga like it’s still great it’s great basketball but I wish this game was at the kennel and I’m annoyed that this happens every year yes I mean they they play in the in the Spokane Veterans Arena right or they now play in Seattle the kettle needs more big games and I get it cuz K doesn’t have a ton of seats and you want to sell more tickets and that kind of stuff but that like the the true home homes of the atmosphere is what college basketball is all about we’ve gotten a lot of that this week with the ACC Challenge and the Big East Big 12 stuff would have been fun to see yeah also maybe respectfully could we renovate the kennel like can we get more seats if the problem is not enough seats like you are Gonzaga he’s been here 30 years like come on somebody give this man some money and let’s get the kennel bigger they’re going to have Pack 12 money soon it’s crazy buy a bigger kennel uh Gonzaga good basketball team Kentucky also a good basketball team let’s start with the Kentucky side of this they are coming off their first loss of the mark Pope era they have exceeded all expectations that could have been even reasonably possible I think you and I were split this offseason on it you were trying to urge me to believe I resisted once they beat Duke I was like I can’t resist anymore this is a very good basketball team uh I do think they’ve got some issues right now I think they reared their head against Clemson for the first time on the road and uh I don’t think they’re fully solved Lamont Butler seems banged up right now that’s certainly an issue so what’s the general pulse check with you on Kentucky right now think Kentucky is still fine like yes they lost to Clemson there is no shame in going on the road and losing to a top 25 caliber Clemson team right like you’d still prefer to win that game but it’s not sounding off alarm bells in my mind or anything now losing ttic and zag is not going to do that either it may raise some eyebrows the biggest thing that we saw against Clemson and it’s the the question I’ve had about Kentucky and their ability to like make a run in the N tournament right or win an SEC Championship is there are a lot of really good players on this roster no great player from a like National play the year standpoint or from an NBA draft standpoint and they play to a system so when that system is not working working aka you’re not making your threes at a super high clip what else can you do to offset that and against Clemson they shot 7 to 27 from three 25.9% so what can you do to offset that well they ended up having more turnovers than assist they worked well on the glass and they they did some things defensively late in that game that gave them a chance ultimately wasn’t enough and Gonzaga is better than Clemson so if you go into Gonzaga on the road and you are not making your threes what else can you do to keep you in the elite tier of teams and playing at the elite level and I think that’s the question with Kentucky right now is we haven’t seen anything else they’ve needed everything to be working perfectly to be the the number four team in the country that they were and that they are I guess still ranked what’s going to happen if everything isn’t working perfectly if if you know one of the wheels is a little squeaky that’s the that’s the only thing with Kentucky for me MH yeah okay so here’s one thing I’ve been mulling over since their loss to Clemson that I’m a little afraid to like go on record with but you’re the right person to go on record with it Brian because you always talk me out of my Kentucky skepticism so I I am am a man of emotional swings like in the offseason I’m like this is going to be a disaster and then they be Duke and I’m like this is the top five team in the country the reality is somewhere in the middle um the more I look at what they’ve done through the first month of the season the more more I’m starting to question how impressive it actually is because the 7 and0 start of course 7 and0 7 and0 a win over Duke’s incredible but outside of the Duke win they haven’t really beaten anybody else all the rest of the wins really do profile as like the winds Mark Pope racked up at BYU too like his team’s always blew out bad teams at BYU um if you look more closely at that Duke game too I do think there’s an argument to be made that that’s not the version of Duke that is going to be the best version of Duke the rest of the season I mean Isaiah Evans did not check into the game he just won them a game two days ago um like Mason Gillis was still playing serious minutes at that point Khan nipple took 20 shot attempts like I think Duke has sort of self- diagnosed their issues in a way they hadn’t yet at that game and look Kentucky was the better team so I don’t want to take anything away from them on that but I think if Kentucky play Duke on a neutral again I don’t know how many people would expect Kentucky to win that game again as duke is like growing up a little bit before our eyes already so you know the Clemson game I guess to me would just be this thing like it it was Vis visibly noticeable to me watching that game that it felt like it was the first time this season where kuy’s best players just there wasn’t much separation right because like if egga o is your best player you might not have enough talent to to beat many good teams on on certain nights just is what it is like him and Andrew Carr are fine players those have been complimentary guys on bad basketball teams their whole career so I guess that’s a fear of mine looking at Gonzaga is like this is one of the more talented teams in the country again Gonzaga feels like a team that has some [ __ ] to prove um I guess I don’t know is this a fair way to frame what’s going on with can tell you right now or am I being unfair I don’t think you’re being totally unfair um you brought up the Duke game too you know who was awesome in the Duke game Andrew Carr Andrew Carr they played five games since then he has scored six points or less in three of those five games like he you’ve not gotten the same Andrew Carr that you got in that game and O OA o has been I think better than anybody expected at Kentucky that being said he’s he should not be like your lead guy or one of your lead guys he’s also had to be at times because Jackson Robson hasn’t become the the leader in terms of like your go-to offensive option that I think Kentucky wanted him to be Mark poke wanted him to be Kentucky fans expected him to be so they’re still trying to figure some of that out one thing I will say um I had a Ralph report on this that was on the channel after the Duke game and he played really well at the end of the Clemson game too when things got tight Amari Williams is awesome he’s a dude and like when when things get tight in their inclose games and competitive games he’s the one who seems to kind of rise to the occasion and make a lot of key plays key little plays um That Swing the favor for uh for Kentucky Gonzaga doesn’t have anybody who I think can match his athleticism and so I’m interested to see how how that plays out in this game but Gaga should have a huge advantage in the back court Mark F was familiar with Mark Pope’s system given the fact that they were WCC opponents for for quite some time there but Gonzaga also hasn’t played perfect this season themselves I don’t know though if Kentucky is equipped to attack those weaknesses like my big question with Gonzaga is they’ve had problems with guards we can get into the lane and kind of give you some some semblance of an idea that gonzaga’s perimeter defense is not Elite it’s not bad but it’s not Elite I don’t think Kentucky has anybody who can really like break you down off the Tribble other than maybe Jackson Robinson and he has not played to the level we’ve expected him to so I think to me like if Kentucky is going to go on the quote unquote Road and win this game it’s got to be a big Jackson Robinson game there’s what’s the deal with Jackson because he the eye test is not at all what anyone expected I don’t know if confidence is there he looks he looks tentative right like he he doesn’t seem decisive uh and that he’s got a Killer Instinct looks like he’s trying to find his way still which is is not what he showed at BYU last year yeah I don’t know he’s a strange fella to me I don’t know anything about him personally so I don’t mean to like comment on how how he is as a person but like I I don’t know it just it’s never fully added up like it’s like yeah the billing of him to me was like oh he’s he’s the NBA Talent on this team you got to have somebody he’s the one and it’s like well Mark Pope like I know he’s a pope guy Pope didn’t start him last year like I I don’t think Pope’s dumb and I’m look he played starter minutes and was featured so but that it just never adds up like your guy is coming off the bench and he’s supposed to be the NBA tal I just it doesn’t fully click for me and it hasn’t clicked visually this season so I’m curious where that goes um speaking of things that don’t click for me let’s segue to Gonzaga you alluded to Amari Williams being uh maybe a matchup problem in the front Court I agree with you I think Amari Williams has been the best big that will be on the court in this game this season um now Gonzaga has a lot of good bigs but what’s going on with graham eek is really baffling to me you know this I we’re in a bunch of group text with Connor hope who hosts the videos on the channel and Connor’s a Gonzaga fan and uh Connor and I go to war on a lot of personnel related decisions he gets to Victory laap me for being wrong about Aiden mahaney I don’t even think I get to Victory lap him yet because I I don’t think I’ve even been right on Graham EK but my stance with EK is I I can’t believe what has happened to him in the first month of the season um look I don’t think ek’s played well at all I’m sure that’s a huge part part of this markk F is not rewarding not your best play and he’s got really good other options like Braden huff and Ben Greg can give you good things but I also am really struggling to step back broadly and just know for a fact that we’re talking about a guy that in February of last season gave you a stretch where he had 23 23 21 20 26 26 24 points in a seven game span playing between 28 and 35 minutes a night in that span and this year he hasn’t played more than 22 minutes in a game has one game in 20 points scored or more like to me I don’t even necessarily really care if he hasn’t been at his best to me like he’s your star the sellon Gonzaga being good includes a good gram e and if you’re going to go that quickly away from the guy who is your star for other promising options that by the way I don’t think have played that well when they’ve checked in the game on behalf of gram e I’m just like totally out on the idea of what they’re doing here Our Stars not playing well enough we gotta limit him and bring in Ben Greg I I don’t get it explain it to me I I I don’t get it either other than the fact that and I don’t I don’t know maybe there’s some health issues going on maybe there are things that Mark F wants to do running running more some things defensive Le ZK has not been um protecting the rim at the same rate that he was and he’s not necessarily an elite rim protector but he’s not protecting the rim and being the interior Force defensively that he can be it is shocking because when they had their late season surge last year he was the driving force behind that like he was the guy and other guys had stepped up too but he was the guy behind that I also don’t think it’s it’s lost on me that his two best games this year were their two biggest wins against big San Diego State right like that that’s not lost on me either at the same time seeing him play essentially a half a game to a little bit less than a half a game is is a little surprising to me and Kentucky with the way they space the floor is probably a bad matchup for him given his his lack of lateral quickness so we may see another you know 15 minutes gr M I trust he’s going to score you some points in those 15 minutes but what else can he do and that’s going to determine I think how long is on the court yeah look it’s good to have options I’m not saying it’s not good to have options and I think as far as like bench bigs go in the country Ben Greg and Bren Huff are are very good like I believe we’re coming off a Ben Greg kenpom MVP and their Davidson win and Braden Huff has had like a bunch of good games himself this year so I don’t mean to like disrespect those guys I just truly mentally for me like Riley Davis picked Gonzaga to win the national championship honestly we kind of laughed at it at the time thinking no way with this team and then two weeks into the season we’re like wow what a call by Riley this team could do it I’m not gonna buy it if Graham m is not like a star on this team like if they have turned their star into like a yeah we only need 15 from him because we’ve got huff and Greg I just I don’t think that’s what’s best for this team now or long term and the West Virginia loss was really hard for me to stomach with that and again I know I was texting Connor and we disagree on this cu fans probably will disagree on it but like to to get so little from him in a game that you lose to Javon small and Aman hansbury is like baffling to me you’ve got to try to get more from your best player but outside of the front court if we think maybe Amari Williams and Kentucky have the advantage there is there anything else on the floor that isn’t going to be Advantage Gonzaga here I don’t think so and and I’m glad you’re brought up small because small was the best guard in the court in that game because of what he was able to do getting into the paint like he took advantage of some of those Gonzaga perimeter defensive issues that I talked about before it’s also why Arizona state was able to keep that game close Kentucky doesn’t have those kind of guys right kir C is not coming down the court breaking you down off the dribble get into the lane Lamont Butler can do that but he does it more with strength than quickness I think Gonzaga is equipped to handle that Jackson Robinson can do it he’s got the size to create and and shoot over some guys when he gets in the lane there but he’s really the the only one Ryan mhart is I think the best guard in this game but he’s not somebody who you’re going to rely on to carry the scoring load and I think that’s part of the issue with Gonzaga is he is your best guard to get the best version of him he needs to be like a a number two number three scoring option and the best playmaker it’s like what Kansas fans think of as the best version of dwan Harris Ryan Mard is like that on steroids right where he’s he’s got to be the playmaker and he provides more SC boring but he’s best as a playmaker s in the table for everybody else yeah that means you need big Nan Hickman games and big KH battle games and those two have done it for the most part this season I think if you’re questioning whether Gonzaga win the national championship or not comes on to how good you think those two guys are but in this game against Kentucky I think those two guys are at least as good as anybody kuy’s thrown out there individually mhm yeah no I I completely agree um yeah yeah I if we’re doing just like a general pulse check with this the skepticism that I’m throwing a little bit kuy’s way right now of like yeah are they as good as their best moments this year I I don’t feel that with Gonzaga like you look at the good moments of Gonzaga this year I’m very much like that’s who this team is and I would look at their bad moments and be like that was an anomaly game it was weird and maybe that’s unfair that I’m doing it negatively to Kentucky and not negatively to Gonzaga but I just I I really do think this Team Caliber wise is closer to the team that was like blowing out Baylor and blowing out Indiana and comfortable wins against a good Arizona State team and a good San Diego State team than what West Virg I think that’s the faith in Mark Pope or Mark F excuse me and the lack of you know just provess in Mark Pope right you’re gonna give markf the benefit of Doubt all the time yeah you’re Pope’s still earning that yeah yep makes sense um we mentioned they do a lot of these like neutral games in Seattle do we have any of sense of what their record is in these games still PR still pretty damn good Gaga’s record in every game is pretty damn good it is pretty damn good I’m just trying to like this might be something I want to dig up for tomorrow I should have done it for this video but like when teams go whether to climate pledge or like just some some neutral site state of Washington game and it’s like a top 100 team I would love to know what the numbers are on that they they couldn’t handle Yukon last year in their game there but there’s there’s no shame in losing to Yukon last year um and then the last one they played was 20222 against Bama loss loss uh oh Ralph maybe maybe this is a thing maybe this is a thing we have we have stumbled upon okay so they’re 0 and two in their last two climate pledge semi home games uh let me see was this 2016 was the last one before that they beat Tennessee but Tennessee was not top 100 in 2016 so all right now we’re going to far of a a stretch here but interesting last I wouldn’t expect that wouldn’t expect that yeah just a note um can I give you a quick pitch on why I think this is a total nightmare matchup for Kentucky and why I expect Gaga to win by double digits yes here’s where I’m at with this I do think uh stylistically this is perfect game for Gonzaga um Kentucky doesn’t Force turnovers at all Gonzaga doesn’t turn the ball over at all both teams play similar Tempo like you’re going to be comfortable in an up and down game there’s nothing kck’s going to do defensively that is going to disrupt Ryan neard doing whatever he wants and uh Lamont Butler’s very good he’s banged up he’s probably playing 20 minutes you’re G to get a lot of Kirk Reese is still on the floor in this game I don’t think that bodess well whatsoever like the the sell for me would be lamon Butler comes in and like has a great personal game against uh against dhart I just don’t think that’s that’s capable of happening given his injury status right now um and then on the flip side like Kentucky it’s one of those things for me where like I think this Kentucky team can score in a lot of ways and they have feasted on bad teams but they still really are really three-point dependent and that that’s always going to be a staple of Mark Pope’s teams and I think for the first time this season a good defense in Clemson cut the water off a little bit and all of a sudden we’re looking at like they don’t have a guy who can go get you one gonzaga’s defense has been great at guarding the three-point line teams are shooting 24% from three against him this year that’s percentage defense um it’s not necessarily preventing attempts but I think it’s real like I think Gaga is GNA be a good three-point defense this feels like a very similar thing where like Gonzaga offensively is just super comfortable defensively Kentucky’s uncomfortable it’s got to be a Jackson Robinson game and we agree he hasn’t looked apart so to me this is like statement Gonzaga win territory and probably a game we shouldn’t Panic about if Kentucky loses comfortably but one where as Talking Heads we’re going to come out of it and be like well is Kentucky broken what happened I would look at it from the standpoint of like Kentucky can win this game and I think Kentucky can win this game a pretty decent amount of times like if they played 10 times KY is probably winning it four maybe five but the margin for air for Gonzaga in this matchup I think is much larger right Kentucky to play at the the top five level where they’re ranked right now I think is a much you know thinner needle to thread than Gonzaga which is what you’re running into in this game if anything it may be a coming back down toe game for Kentucky where like okay yeah you’re not top five in the country still a good team but like you’re not top five and Gonzaga a win here I think it’s the the WVU lost taste out of your mouth right you just another win to stamp it the Indiana win had some of that but I think Indiana’s got some some real issues so you’re not taking a lot of stock in that this is a chance to kind of get things back rolling for Gaga and we’re getting closer to the start of conference play Gaga needs to make these statements now they’re not going to have the opportunities to in WCC play um with st marus still flying under the radar this season so I I expect Gonzaga to come out in this game and play at a pretty high level kuy’s ability to match it is going to come down to I think are are you hitting your threes and does Lamont Butler get Ryan Mard any sort of off track yep yeah agreed uh weird schedule Quirk too Gonzaga has Yukon right after this but it’s a week from Saturday so they have seven days off in between uh so if you were going to play that is anybody looking ahead card I don’t think anybody looks past Kentucky but it might be on gonzaga’s mind of like yeah we got another one coming whereas Kentucky is probably very focused on this one I don’t know we’ll see uh dimer Pro is our analytics engine that we use for all college basketball previews this are you taking Ralph I feel like I’ve picked a lot of games by like eight or so but I think this game is really like Gaga by eight where it’s either close and Gonzaga makes the plays late they need to because I think we saw some of uh kuy’s late game offensive execution having some issues against Clemson or Gaga wins this game by like you know or leads most of the game by 14 15 and Kentucky kind of chips away and makes it look closer to the end than it actually is I’m not expecting a true like back and forth kind of game past the first 10 minutes I think Gonzaga will have a lead and maintain it for a while Kentucky May threaten Gonzaga pushes it back out to 10 or 12 or so but I think Gaga wins comfortably by multiple possessions yeah okay we’re on the same page if both teams are making shots this will be the most fun game of the weekend stylistically um absolutely and a big opportunity for both sides we’ll see we’ll have a recap for it next week thank you for watching this video is
