back here on HQ Spotlight if you’re just joining the program yes we are wearing ugly Christmas sweaters all day today um as we go into week 14 in the NFL we have a loaded slate on CBS a classic AFC North showdown in the 1:00 slate with the Browns and the Steelers but if we go all the way down to 405 Eastern we have a massive game massive implications in the division when it comes to the playoffs with the Seahawks and the Cardinals Charles Davis is going to be on the call for that one and so we’re welcoming on Charles with us here to preview this matchup Charles always great to see you my friend and there’s a lot of story lines to follow starting of course with Gino Smith personally I feel like he has one of the coolest Journeys the coolest stories at the quarterback position in the NFL if we go back all the way two years ago where he said hey those people that wrote me off I didn’t write him back so i’ I’ve Loved Gino since then moving forward but what is it going to take for everybody else to buy in on that confidence that we know he has in himself Jacqueline I I love what you’re saying and first of all the sweaters are not ugly what I’ve seen you guys are looking great and I wish I’d gotten the memo so I could have had mine on instead of just this normal sweater but all that being said about Gino what’s it going to take it’s going to take him cutting down his turnovers right now because he’s thrown 12 interceptions already this year that’s not really what Seattle needs because since the open week you can tell they’ve changed their style of play a little bit their defense is playing so well that they’re asking the offense to kind of play to the defense really hitting the running game hard under offense coordinator Ryan grubs taking care of the ball on offense Gino can throw anything all right you’ve seen it ja he can make any throw you need in your offense what they want is him to not make that throw that puts them in Jeopardy that hurts their defense that put you know turns the ball over in the Red Zone overall he’s playing quite well if Gino Smith could ever get to an NFC Championship game I think then people might look at him and go oh yeah he really is a heck of a player postcript when he won the most what was it the most uh the comeback Player of the Year award you remember that in 2021 he didn’t go to the NFL honors and pick up the award because in his mind comeback come back from what I’ve been here the entire time he’s got a lot of Pride about himself I I love Gino Smith he is so so likable and we’re g to talk more about that Seattle defense and just a moment but we got to talk about the quarterback for the other team in Kyler Murray because we’ve seen that offense in the play makers that they have we’ve seen flashes of what Marvin Harrison Jr can do we’ve seen them lean into James Connor but uh CD in your opinion can kylo Murray be the focal point of that offense if he needs to be he certainly can absolutely he can because despite his stature which we’ve talked about since the time he hit the scene in Allen Texas and was winning championships he can play from the pocket as well as get outside the pocket so every big play that he’s ever had in his career has not come from him being outside the pocket for better sight line he can stay in the pocket and dice you up that way as well and obviously you mentioned Marvin Harrison Jr coming as a first round pick Michael Wilson’s playing well for him but Trey McBride the tight end he has stepped out and is taking the spotlight in a big way I’m playing if they need Kyler Murray to now throw at 35 40 times he’s capable but I think in this ball game I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get back to a little bit more of his running ways which we haven’t seen as much from him this season because I think he may need it against this tough tough Seattle defense let’s talk about Arizona’s defense because if you look at the numbers dating back to week seven of this season they’re top two in several ranks CD how do you much do you accredit that to the coaching that is there um in Arizona well I credit I credit a lot of it to the coaching there I I’ve said this for the last two years I’m as impressed with the coaching staff of Arizona especially the top level positions I am of anyone in in the NFL Jonathan Ganon head coach coach Nick rless defensive coordinator Drew pet offens coordinator and Jeff Rogers is the veteran guy’s been around the league for a while as a special teams coordinator they do a fantastic job understanding the talent that they have how best to utilize it and how to set an identity with that Talent on offense the identity is a big physical offensive line and James Conor running the football on defense Nick rolls is going to throw a lot of different things at you and try and feature guys who are hot at the time but most of all Buddha baker their safety have involved in everything and Jeff Rogers and the Special Teams DJ Dallas has done a really nice job returning kickoffs including the first ever Dynamic kickoff return for a touchdown in NFL history in the season opener against Buffalo yeah we had those new kickoff rules we’re waiting to see what that was going to mean for those games this season um if we talk about Seattle’s defense um we cannot not talk about Leonard Williams Because man oh man quite the Revenge game against his former team he had a heck of a pick six a block pick a whole lot of sack how remarkable is what we’re seeing from him right now Charles it’s phenomenal what we’re seeing because we’ve seen this from those big defensive tackles throughout this season how about Dexter Lawrence and what he’s doing with the Giants another former team of Leonard Williams but what he is doing now is allowing Mike McDonald the defensive coordinator to utilize him what we call playing the piano meaning laterally up and down the line of scrimmage just like a Pianist plays on the keys he can be a defensive end defensive tackle at the nose whatever number technique you want you want him at a three a one a shaded all of it a zero technique he can do it and if he finds a matchup that’s suitable to him where you can’t hold up he’ll be there the entire game working on it absolutely absolutely wrecked people on the defensive front last B listen last time Tyler Murray saw him Leonard Willams wrapped around him a lot in that ball game they’ve got to find a way to block him in this one if Arizona wants to have any success yeah if I’m Kyler I’m a little bit nervous seeing what he just did against against that Jets offense coming into this this divisional matchup let’s talk about Seattle though um winning three straight they’re sitting alone at the top of the division for now we know there’s a lot of different scenarios but how impressive is this for a first year head coach especially Charles it’s really impressive because with Mike McDonald took the job he told us in his initial press conference that don’t forget this is my first head coaching job I will be learning on the job then they got out to a three and0 start and we’re like well he’s got this thing down pat doesn’t he and then they went to a little bit tail spin a little bit of losing I think one and four over his next five and now lately they’re back to their winning ways he’s actually simplified some of the defense that he’s doing honed in on what these guys absolutely do best and and is able to generate pressures on teams without actually bringing extra people what looks like a pressure people will drop out of the pressure and other people will replace and now instead of a five or six person Rush it’s still a three or four person rush but it feels like five or six and in fact you mentioned Leonard Williams in that pick six that he had with went over 90 yards with a 300 plus pound man that came out of one of those types of pressures and by the way what are we calling that now when it’s a 300lb plus guy get a pick six is it like a six plus I’m not sure but come up with a great name you let me know we’ll have to brainstorm and that was the longest pick six by a 300 PB player uh making history by the way Charles we talked about it earlier in the show because I just keep calling this the wild wild NFC us because there’s still a scenario where we could have a four-way tie at 9 and eight and it’s hard to think that you know the ners despite all those injuries they’re still not out of the mix here when it’s all said and done looking at the schedules the injuries how teams are playing right now in this moment who do you think comes out on top it feels like almost an impossible question to answer at this point but if you H what is your gut telling you about this division it is almost impossible but right now the way Seattle’s playing on defense they like their chances but here’s the problem as you’ve described it it’s the wild west right Seattle’s going to Arizona this weekend and you know what it’s like when you’ve beaten a team once and you’re pretty evenly matched the Revenge factor is pretty good and it wasn’t that long ago we were talking about Arizona having a four game winning streak the team I think you’ve got to really keep an eye on though is Los Angeles the way Shawn McVey has done things the grit that they always show and by the way they get chance to announce themselves because I believe this weekend on Sunday they host the buffalo bills so if you want to announce that they are for real and want to really be in this thing if they could take out Buffalo who’s playing as well as anyone in the league right now that would tell you how jumbled this is going to be so all in all Jacqueline you asked me a question that that flat out did not answer I will say this we don’t want to give up on San Francisco I just don’t know if they have enough gas left to get it done they’ve got so many injuries they had to go hire they had to go sign someone off the Jets practice squad to carry the ball Israel abamaca today I just don’t know that the injuries is going to permit them to make the kind of type of run you would expect from San Francisco I’m saying it’s a three- team Race and unfortunately this year only one of them I believe is going to the playoffs when in fact we thought it might be three out of the West when the season began yeah which is absolutely wild and and to your point that latest injury from CMC is just a huge blow to the ners Charles we certainly appreciate it enjoy the game next time we wear the ugly
