welcome back to another episode of rock boys football deal I think a fascinating Big 10 championship Penn State Oregan two of the most complete teams that you see in all of college football and I think what’s fascinating about this matchup heading in you look at Penn State what do you normally think really really good defense with just kind of an average offense look this defense has been really really good in 20124 but the offense the offense has found some explosiveness that they’ve been lacking the last couple of years D coach cold Nikki in this Penn State offense 6.7 yards per Play It’s top five in the country you don’t associate Penn State with having a top five metric in terms of yards per play that’s what Penn State has now you look at Oregon you associate really really high flying offense which you’ve seen from Oregon in 2024 with maybe a little bit of an average of Defense not under Dan Landing taking a look at the numbers four and a half yards per play given up for Oregon that’s top 10 in the country and this Oregon defense the last couple of weeks weeks has looked Elite and so you look at these two teams and say they ain’t many flaws there’s not many holes in either of these two teams some really intriguing matchups that I want to get into now before we doing as always well Penn State fans Oregon fans let it fly in the comment section this is one of those games that I think all you know all college football fans appreciate game that we don’t get to see very often now we’re going to get to see it more in the future these two logos it’s kind of fun to see them square up so we love to hear from you all in the comments section if you all do enjoyed the content consider subscribing to the channel D without further Ado I’m going to throw something out here this Oregon offense has been very good in 2024 and it one of the things we talk about with Oregon is how multi-dimensional they are how many different ways they can attack and opposing defense lately it’s been running the football with a very big in physical offensive line going up against a Penn State defensive front that’s very hard to run the football against top 10 in the country in terms of yards per carry when you you look at this matchup what do you see or kind what are the key metrics you’re looking at in terms of this unit playing out well I didn’t be looking at the negative plays pen State can create because I still look like Penn State like they play a really aggressive Style with their front seven I think the fact that like guys like Kobe King and roas who have played really good has helped kind of limit the gash plays I guess you might say in this Penn State’s defense against the run but you still saw Penn State get to a couple of them you saw Minnesota hit a touchdown run of over 20 yards like that type of play I Feel Like is present with the way Penn State likes play defense it is a little bit more aggressive it does create some creases but man if Penn State can do a good job racking up the negative plays like they’ve done pretty much all year they can create some real problems for this Oregon team because Oregon when they play behind schedule does not look good this year at all it’s probably the the most important metric you’re looking at in this football game right we’ve broken down a lot of Oregon games when Oregon plays really well in offense very limited penalties very limited negative play staying on schedule keeping that full Playbook at your disposal when they don’t play very well in offense it’s because they’re getting behind the chains there’s not many better defenses in the country at creating negative plays in keeping teams off schedule than Penn State that is a very important metric to look at deal specifically the rushing attack I’m just going to throw this one out there I don’t even know if it’s true I’m kind of interested in it you look at Penn State against the Run Ohio State wasn’t really equipped to really play that that power inside Zone scheme because they didn’t have the dudes on the offensive line so what they went to is a lot of perimeter stuff which worked to an extent Penn State’s kind of small up front right they’re very active they’re very good but but they’re small guys like Xander am what 61 290 Oregon’s built a little bit different this is not the traditional Oregon Ducks team and Dan Lanning has built an offensive line that not only is very very good but it is very very big and physical and they’ve had a ton of success with some of that Gap scheme and inside Zone stuff do you think Oregon can have some success just running right at Penn State and trying to move smaller bodies off the line of scrimmage with your bigger bodies on the offensive line and that’ll be the question it’s like the only time in the past like Michigan was able to do it the that’s kind what I’m think that’s the only team that really could physically overwhelm him and again Michigan didn’t give up a ton of negative plays didn’t take a ton of penalties like those things you want to see but again Oregon for the most part has been really good good being able to grind teams down when they go to it I do feel like sometimes Oregon gets away from it and wants to go through the air when they’ve been committed to kind of pounding on teams as of late they’ve been really really tough again they haven’t seen a defensive line that’s as as impact I think you could say Ohio State’s playing good in the defensive line they’re not playing as good and as disruptive I don’t think as I think you could say the same thing for Penn State though like had they seen an offensive line like this and again it’s not something you normally associate with but it is true you talk about those guys on the inside you talk about the Johnny Cornelius and Josh conerly they can move bodies off the line of scrimmage can some of that power stuff give Penn State some problems and that’s exactly what I was thinking like kind of like Michigan in the past with some of that Gap scheme moving Penn State off the line we’ll we’ll see we don’t see it very often is the battle like if Penn State can get behind create some negative plays if their linebackers do a really good job like they’ve been doing for most the year being able to clean it up when those creases are inevitably created by that kind of slashing Gap shooting kind of style Penn State likes play that will be the battle to me because again I don’t know that I see Oregon just ripping this Penn State team up in passing attack it’s just it’s too hard to drop back and throw consistently with that pass or that pass well that that was my last match up I wanted to talk about and this is a get your popcorn ready matchup Abdu Carter to me is the best add rusher in the country yeah I don’t I don’t I wouldn’t say it’s not close but I think he’s pretty clearly the best addresser in the country going up against two of the better offensive tackles in the country and Josh Connor and Johnny Cornelius who wins that matchup that’s kind of what I’m looking at and I’m that’s not trying to credit or discredit a guy like Donis s who certainly can get get after the pass as well it’s G that’s NFL on NFL and we’re gonna see a really intriguing match up and the winner of that matchup probably you know very well could be the winner of the game in terms of hey does Penn State’s pass rush win or Does Oregon’s pass prote see I think Penn State’s pass rush does need to win to an extent because I think you look I think the boundary Corners are solid for Penn State I don’t look at it as the strength of this team so if they do have time to rip it around that is Oregon rip it around in that Dome I feel like that could possibly be an issue especially with Tess Johnson back because I look that’s a really dangerous thre from wide receivers that Oregon’s throwing at I think you’re being I think you’re being piggy with these Penn State DBS guys was in my notes too think they’re pretty I mean there’s they ain’t many holes in this Penn State Defense that that’s for sure and I would think Oregon goes some of that quick game that they do a really good job of like Hey we’re going to neutralize this pass rush not only with the really good tackles we’re just not going to give these guys enough time to get after the passer and try to get some yards after the catch that’s kind of how Oregon builds their offense still flipping sides here uh this Penn State offense I it’s been a blast to watch like you can hell C Nikki has on this pen State offense much more pre-and motion a lot of different looks a lot of different Personnel groupings and you kind of feel like Penn State has something in the chamber for this game like coach C Nicki there’s an analyst amount of stuff he has in his bag I’m sure there’s some stuff in his bag that he hasn’t shown yet the big thing about what he’s been able to do is he’s been able to really like force feed his big dogs like Nick Singleton and Warren are getting the ball constantly and they’re getting the ball with some space like how he creat space for Tyler Warren who everybody in mother knows he’s G to get the ball like 15 times a game for pen State he’s still doing it he’s using inside screens I mean certainly Tyler Warren’s versatility and ability to play with the ball after the catch being able to run vertical routes and make contested catches like there’s just nothing he can’t do so obviously there’s a lot C Nikki can do with him but man their ability to get him involved in every game no matter what I think kind of been the difference from Penn State last year where it didn’t always feel like they could feature their their yeah there there’s two massive matchups one how successful canens they run the football that to me comes down to ey discipline like I look at this Oregon front s especially the way they’ve played lately you know Derek Harman Jamari calwell on the inside guys like Jordan Burch Mato and Tatum on the outside the the linebackers have been playing very good led by Bryce betra that’s a very hard front seven to run the football on I think if you’re Oregon you just got to be disciplined like you’re going to see a lot of pre- snap stuff you’re going to see a lot of different looks you’re going to see some misdirection if you can just be solid in your assignments I think Oregon can hold up and then the second one is can he try to take away Tyler Warren because I think in this matchup I would guess Oregon feels pretty dang confident with their defensive backs against Penn State’s wide receivers if there’s one hole in this Penn State team it’s the the the pass catchers on the outside at the wide receiver room just haven’t been difference makers so you feel pretty comfortable with that matchar how do you take away Tyler Warren now it’s one guy and you say hey that’s got to be easy right no it’s not coach gold just gets this kid involved in so many different ways it’s been game plan PJ Fleck went on like a tiate after the game so it was our whole game plan was to take Tyler Warren out of the football game had like nine catches for a buck 17 that will be Oregon’s goal is how to deal with Tyler Warren how do how do you see Oregon trying to do that Saturday night against Penn State it’s gonna be kind of what you said I think the one dangerous thing for Ohio State and why I think they had some success against Oregon is Oregon had to kind of honor the ability for Penn State to get down the field with their wide receivers like Jeremiah Smith he’s a real problem in one-on-one coverage again it’s kind of the issue is Penn State doesn’t really feel like they have that guy in the boundaries so can you get your safeties into the box to deal with essentially what Tyler Warren throwing at you because he is the guy who leads the way the One X Factor to me is Amari Evans like he actually started making some plays had a huge game against Minnesota left a couple on the board where he was getting behind that defense which is a pretty good secondary in my opinion for that Minnesota defense like can he be that guy to emerge as like okay if he gets a match up can he take advantage at least threaten it where Oregon does need to honor it a little bit where Penn State can get a little bit more room underneath and Oregon’s been able to take away for most teams just not Ohio State when they had the you you feel like against a team like this and kind of the same conversation we had with Penn State Ohio State you feel like you’re going to need to have a wide receiver step up and I don’t know if Penn State necessarily got that against Ohio State to me on the surface it looks hard for Penn State to consistently move the football and win this game if it’s just GNA be Tyler Warren now you can’t stop Tyler Warren but you can try to contain him and I feel like Dan Lanning TSH Lup will have a plan to deal with him can can can one of year boundary whether it’s Harrison Wallace whether it’s Mario can they step up and make some plays and if you’re Oregon you’re probably feeling pretty good about that match up these boundary cornerbacks have been Elite for Oregon I think the last thing you wanted to just quickly say is this pass rush this pass rush for Oregon what’s the biggest difference between them in 2023 and 2024 in a lead Elite pass rush from all spots in the defensive line whether it’s Derek Carman or Jamari Caldwell whether it’s j j j Jordan Burch excuse me and Matteo you can Penn State block him up that’s probably the last thing you’re looking at D let’s get into the pick here Penn State three-point dogs neutral sight how we feeling I like Oregon and it’s still comes down to my hesitation or really believe too much in the Penn State boundary wide receiver threat that I think is so crucial to like giving them more space to operate because I feel like when Oregon plays teams that don’t have that guy they’ve really done a good job taking away the airspace underneath in really suffocating teams again Ohio state was able to bump them off a little bit force them into more of a too high safety look relatively consistently and they were able to march the ball down the field a little bit more I just look I don’t think Penn State has that Jeremiah Smith now Amari Evans they’re starting to use him and there has been some I’m kind of interested to see what he is in this game but I’m not sure I’m totally buying into it yet yeah I I feel like you take Oregon in this one and it’s just like what I like this pennate offense it is it is clearly better than what it was last year but when they have played those elite elite caliber defenses they have struggled a little bit I think Oregon right now has an elite caliber defense and then when it comes down to what offense do I trust to make more plays I’m going to go with the offense that I think has more Playmakers and I think that’s Oregon this is going to be a fascinating game and I think the Lions dead on like it’s going to be a close one give me Oregon to cover the three points as well and that there’s also that element of of Dan Lanning it just seemingly he’s got this program rolling and we’ve seen Penn State struggle in these big games and so I’m gonna go with Dan Lanning the Oregon Ducks we’ll pause there appreciate you guys rock with it if y’all do enjoy the content consider subscribing to the channel appreciate you guys we’ll talk to y’all later
