the relevant piece of Luis severino’s reported three-year $67 million agreement with the A’s from a Mets standpoint is really just that it provides us another data point to what David Sterns and his group will do and in this case won’t do with starting pitchers even when they like those starting pitchers Luis srino was a good met he was productive on the field part of their culture and earlier this week I was hearing that they were willing and interested in bringing him back uh even after agreeing to terms with Frankie Montas but the issue for the Mets was going to be does severino’s Market as his price tag outpace what they’re willing to do not just for him uh really really for most pitchers uh Sterns and Jeremy Hefner the pitching coach who Sterns inherited have established a track record especially last year with helping guys on shorter term deals really make the most uh out of their talent maybe changing their pitch mix maybe emphasizing something deemphasizing something making a tweak in the arm angle and helping that pitcher Thrive to the point where it’s never going to be a priority in the Sterns era to sign the top starting pitchers to top free agent contracts or do what they consider an overpay on a guy who’s sort of in that middle tier like srino Sterns has confidence that his group can find the right starting pitchers to hit on they know they’re not going to hit on every single one but they’re also not going to pay top dollar for guys whether it’s a srino probably a Corbin Burns or anybody else it’s just not their philosophy
