[Music] some breaking news to get to on this Tuesday December 3rd you’re watching the 49ers report by chat sports my name is Chase senior and coming up we’re going to talk about how San Francisco has signed two running backs in the aftermath of Christian mcaffrey going on IR as well as Jordan Mason unfortunate because mcaffrey was looking great really his best game since coming off by bilateral Achilles tontis against the bills on Sunday night and then Jordan Mason was having a really good year he had run for more than 700 yards and when mcaffrey came back he wasn’t a part of the rotation but was starting to get some carries against Buffalo and with McCaffrey going down you were expecting Jordan Mason to get a bulk of the carries but that’s not going to happen any longer so San Francisco with those injuries needed to make some moves at running back and they have the Niners are signing Israel AB Anda 2023 fifth round pick by the New York Jets out of Pittsburgh and then kesan vaugh is back he was a 2020 third round pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers he’s been back and forth with San Francisco during the preseason and in training camp few times this year on the practice squad not really going to talk a lot about him today because we’ve talked about him before a player with some Mobility scheme familiarity but really the focus here is Israel abanikanda another roster move that we have to get to real quick Niner fans are not going to like this it’s so funny how much negative talk Ronnie Bell gets for being a seventh round pick it’s not like he’s a bust as a first rounder but the Niners are signing him back to the practice squad after they let him go last week as for those running back injuries for San Francisco in case you didn’t know now you know PCL Sprint for mcaffrey doesn’t need surgery but he’s going on injured reserve he’s going to be at least six weeks here’s the problem there are five games left in the regular season the Niners are not making the playoffs so we won’t see mcaffrey until 2025 and hopefully he’s going to be able to have a healthy season the Madden Curse this year was certainly real and then Jordan Mason has to miss at least the next four games because of a high ankle sprain he also got hurt against the bills he too landing on injured reserve and so the ners after these two injuries had no depth at running back at all in fact rookie running back Isaac gendo was the only player at that position on the active roster there was one running back on the practice squad that was Patrick Taylor so the four running backs for San Francisco now abona gendo Taylor and kesan vaugh so rookie Isaac gendo will become rb1 for the ners I’m very excited to see what he’s going to be able to do with more carries and a heavier workload because in minimal moments this season we’ve seen what he’s capable of some background on the player if you don’t know much about him he’s 24 years old great size and speed 6 feet 221 lbs ran a 43 40 yard dash in the pre-draft process 129th overall pick by the ners back in April San Francisco moved up to take him so they clearly really liked him he was at Wisconsin from 2019 of 2022 Louisville last year only one Career College start so little bit Raw on in experience but you see that ability I think that’s a big reason why he gets better with more carries because he simply just hasn’t played that much football does have dual threat potential very comfortable in catching the ball out of the back field and like aananda both similar players 4-3 guys sprinters and a high school track star for gendo I’ve always been fascinated with him going back to Louisville last year but also after what I saw from the NFL scouting combine when he earned a 99 eight relative Athletic score grade on a scale of 1 to10 and at that size of 220 lbs he ran a 433 40 yard dash so he can really fly we’ve seen that on the field this year really has some good Giddy Up 42 carries 246 yards two touchdowns one against Dallas that was his first career touchdown and then he had a touchdown run against the Buffalo Bills it goes down as a run because Brock py threw that ball backwards on a creative play from Kyle shanan finally some creativity from Shanny this year and greno very impressive 5.9 yards per carry his two best games as a pro week six against Seattle 10 carries for 99 yards 9.9 yards per pop he had that runaway 76 yard Scamper which sealed the game for the ners where he kind of got tripped up but he said he slid down it remains a mystery what exactly he was doing on that play but it was a fun conversation after the game and then week against Dallas he had those 14 carries for 85 yards 6.1 yards per carry and as far as EPA per carry he grades out analytically very very well as far as Israel aananda this is a solid pickup for San Francisco considering what point of the year it is it’s December 3rd and so for the Niners to get a good scheme fit and a player with the ab ability let’s talk about the Niners newest running back in Israel aananda San Francisco signed him after the Jets waved him yesterday and the Niners claimed him on waivers and this is a pretty good pickup for when it’s happening on December 3rd this late in the year San Francisco had to make a move at the running back spot because they were so thin there Aban aanda a 2023 fifth round pick out of Pittsburgh he ran a 439 40 yard dash at the NFL combine when he was coming out of college pretty good size too at 510 216 lbs so he has some giddy up to him and he’s a good scheme fit an outside Zone Runner who sees hole hits hole and has some of that getaway speed and with Christian mcaffrey and Jordan Mason on injured reserve rookie Isaac gendo was the only running back on the active roster so right now the Niners four running backs Isaac Reno will be rb1 I imagine abanda will be rb2 Patrick Taylor will be elevated to the active roster from the practice squad and then you have kesan vaugh who has some familiarity with this team having been with this team earlier this year and during preseason and in training camp abona good athlete and Isaac gendo in the pre-draft process earned a 998 relative Athletic score grade aananda not far behind him they are similar but I’d say that gendo is more talented and more explosive not the tallest back at 510 but packs a decent punch at 216 pounds and at that size he ran a sub four4 40 yard dash a 439 guy gendo a 433 player coming out of Louisville the 10 yard split 20 yard split pretty good there some of that short area quickness important for a running back nfl.com scouting report on abaca when he was coming out of pit a zon scheme Runner that’s what the ners run with early down size aananda can be a bit inconsistent with his reads and Tempo early in the Run however he has plant and go agility and and is able to snap off cuts at tight angles to elude short Area traffic when needed he has terrific top end speed to gash a poorly fitted run front but he needs to run with better discipline and downhill decisiveness to stay ahead of the NFL speed abaca isn’t much of a third down option but he does have the size and talent to compete for an rb2 rb3 slot early on with a chance to move up the depth chart in time hadn’t been able to do that with the Jets but I will say he was behind a couple of really good backs on that roster and that’s why he wasn’t getting a lot of playing time and that’s why the Jets decided to let him go but Bree Hall and brillan Allen are really good players so maybe that was the reason why banaka couldn’t get on the field his final year at pit this is really impressive here he ran for more than 100 yards in nine of 11 games he also had 20 rushing t touchdowns really that one cut Runner quick acceleration a former sprinter with some of that Breakaway speed sometimes it can take him a little while to get going initially but once he does start running he is like a sprinter in a sense where he might be behind the pack on a 100 meter dash but then that long speed starts to take over and he’s able to win the race at the end of the day and outrun some linebackers and DBS some of his weaknesses the change of Direction can be lacking at times he he can also struggle with pass protection Kyle Shanahan’s not going to like that and that’s why partially Jordan Mason hasn’t gotten a lot of time when Christian mcaffrey has been back or on the field Jordan Mason was just thrust into duty when mcaffry was hurt but JP Mason has struggled a little bit with pass protection and Kyle Shanah wants to know if he puts a running back on the field can I trust you to lay a block to protect our quarterback I’m really excited to see what gendo and abanaki can do I mentioned this earlier on the show but with the Niners out of it they’re not going to make the playoffs the season is over and away as far as trying to chase a Super Bowl now it’s all about Player Development it’s all about seeing which players you want as part of your core and organization moving forward and I want to see how some of these players can play and develop and these are two young players in gendo and abaca who are good scheme
