welcome back to CBS Sports HQ big news for Boston fans Monday the Celtics expected to have big man Chris TAPS porzingis in the lineup tonight for the first time this season porzingis looking good in a series of scrimmages in recent weeks of practices with the Celtics and their NBA G League affiliate Maine he’s been upgraded to probable on the injury report for tonight’s game against the Clippers five months removed from undergoing foot surgery so let’s talk about what he could contribute tonight and the rehab process itself NBA analyst Ashley Nicole Moss is here CBS Sports HQ injury analyst Marty Jomo is also joining us here so Ash I’ll start with you on this one obviously big news for the Celtics here to have porzingis back what’s the expectation for him tonight I don’t think you’re going to see a lot of minutes from porzingis I think they’re going to gradually work him back into the rotation but obviously he’s going to help tremendously when you talk about the paint when you talk about Second Chance opportunities if you look at the Celtics matchup against the Timberwolves they were absolutely getting killed on the glass that is where porzingis shines and that’s where they’re drastically missing his presence you don’t rely as heavily on him when it comes to the three ball and things like that we already know the Celtics can shoot a lot of Threes they take a lot of Threes they have a lot of three-point Firepower on the floor but porzingis is really going to help with size like I said he’s going to help on the glass those Second Chance opportunities and he’s going to help in the paint all of which are just going to help make the Celtics more dominant than they already are Marty porzingis has made a rapid recovery from this posterior tibial surgery what did it take for him to get here Jeremy Ashley so great to be here some great points made by Ashley there about how he’s slowly going to ramp up but let’s talk about exactly what he sustained so on the inside of the ankle there’s a tenant called the posterior tibialis and it goes in this inside groove of the ankle but there’s a little piece of connective tissue here that keeps that tendon in place as it wraps around the ankle that piece of connective tissue simply tore and made the tenant come in and out of that Groove so the tenant itself was not involved just that piece of connected tissue that was connected reattached to the Bone but it does take five to six months and that’s exactly the moment we are here today uh is he’s perfectly on time on schedule and on protocol I expect him to ramp up to Ashley’s point over the next 3 to four weeks with both minutes as well as some rest days thrown in there but I expect him to be very productive at the as the season goes on he was having a great year last year all right let’s talk about some other injuries elsewhere that are affecting teams the NBA a lot of injuries for the early part of the Season uh elsewhere the Sixers have injury issues Paul George has a left knee uh bone bruise uh Marty you first year how do they treat that and kind of rehabit for him for Paul George yeah well this is this is the good news news MRI showed no structural damage just bone on bone contact and Bone bruises are extremely painful most folks don’t don’t understand this that bone has more nerve endings than any other part of the body that’s why they are so painful but that pain can lead to some weakness some um chronic inflammation and also some loss of motion but I do expect them to recover quickly about one to two games at the most four games but thankfully no structural damage and Ash I mean the Sixers just can’t buy a break here yeah I mean when you talk about embiid and you talk about Paul George you talk about $45 million in Combined contract money between the two of them and Paul George has played just half of the game so far the season 8 of the 16 so yes although the bone bruise may be something he’s able to come back from relatively quickly in hindsight when you talk about the totality of the NBA season it is a long season the biggest concern is Paul was brought in as a way to alleviate some of the pressure off of Joel embiid who’s constantly in and out of the rotation for injuries and other reasons and it now seems that that safe haven that you had is also a player that’s constantly dealing with injuries in some way shape or form so the 76ers are in between a rock and a hard place right now and trying to figure out how to manage to still win games and also make sure their two star players who are owned a lot of money over the course of their their contracts are able to perform come March come April come the playoffs but the biggest question is are the 76ers even going to be in a position to be in the playoffs with the way things are going I saw a stat recently it was like a 20% chance for them to even make the playoffs obviously it’s still very early in the season that can change but first it relies heavily on the health of embiid and Paul George and at this point they’re going to have to make a run a significant run at some point if they’re going to be in that playoff picture all right uh in Dallas look at donic dealing with a right wrist injury he described the injury as nothing serious when it happened obviously though Ash it’s serious when you’ve got your star player dealing with a WR injury as a shooter yeah and I mean the interesting thing with Dallas is that taking Luca out of the rotation at least for now has allowed Kyrie Irving to flourish and be the primary ball handler be the center of the offense which is what he really likes to do and even when Luca was on the floor you can see his Mobility wasn’t quite the same you can see that he was struggling not saying that a healthy Luca do does more harm than good but a unhealthy Luca is not really what you want on the court at that period of time so it is has allowed Jason kids to allow other players to flourish again going back to Kyrie Irving he has been phenomenal 24 points from him five assists per game that’s what he’s averaging 54 53 85 on the splits he’s been on an absolute heater offensively so an unhealthy Luca out of the rotation is not a make or break for Dallas now Klay Thompson is expected to miss tonight’s game against the Hawks that might hurt them a little bit but he’ll be back before Luca will you want Luca healthy before anything else this can this team rather excuse me can stay afloat without him uh as mentioned Marty I mean the wrist is kind of important to a shooter so what’s the process in terms of getting him back on the court without further injury or having it be a lingering thing yeah great Point Jeremy so he injured his uh his wrist against the Pelicans last week so it’s diagnosed as a RIS sprain what does the term sprain with an SP mean it’s a stretch or tear of the supporting ligaments of the wrist he will be immobilized the entire week it needs rest very little Physical Therapy except rest and immobilization to allow those ligaments to just tighten up again that said he’ll be re-evaluated today tomorrow reexamined rmri now here’s the thing being a right-handed shooter and it his right wrist the repetitive nature of shooting all it can do is delay of the recovery so I do expect him to miss a little bit more time at least another one to two weeks because we already saw what happens when he is somewhat challenged his Mobility is his whole body starts to uh get challenged and also affect his um Effectiveness I’m sorry affect his productivity yeah and as you said we’ll we’ll have him reevaluated this week uh in terms of the clip ippers they’re taking on the Celtics tonight Celtics get porzingis back but the Clippers are still without Kawhi leanard who has yet to play this season he deals with an E issue not traveling with the team for their four-game road trip this week Marty is there an end game for a star player who barely plays anymore that is a incredible question Jeremy because he plays less than 50% of his games and we almost forget when he when was the last time he played having had his ACL uh done in 21 followed by meniscal injury and surgery in 22 a procedure in the off season after the 23 season for inflammation and what he has does he have left chronic right knee inflammation so let’s talk about this inflammation it is a basically the result of this multiple trauma to the same area in a short period of time what does inflammation do well first it decreases the strength and the firing and the engage M of supporting muscles number two it can lead to instability of the knee which we cannot have with any kind ofba player as well as it can lead to degeneration arthritis loss of motion and more importantly loss of trust within yourself on the court and that’s what we are left with he simply has lost trust in his body I think the time clock has been punched his retirement is in the near future I would not expect him uh to last much longer than two more seasons it’s a it’s a shame but they simply can’t get control of this inflammation now he has to start thinking about his long-term Health this chronic inflammation which allows his knee to just shift so much every single day can just lead to a long-term degenerative problem and long-term arthritis I guess the positive side from from a team standpoint is that this doesn’t necessarily have it’s it hasn’t had a real deleterious effect on the Clippers at this point because there only a couple back sitting there in the west but obviously having a healthy Kawai is great but being able to win without him at this point is something that they’re obviously going to have to get used to yeah right now it’s not making much of a difference you mention it sitting at 11 and seven they’re on a five-game winning streak two games behind Golden State so it’s not detrimental we are only in November and it’s a long NBA season and when you start looking at the playoff picture and what the playoff picture is expected to look like as we get closer to that time of year you’re going to need kawh L you’re talking about a western conference that yes they’re still figuring it out the league as a whole has been ritten with injury but the Clippers are drastically better with Kawhi Leonard we also know James Harden’s reputation when it comes to the playoffs that’s a little bit worrisome as well if you’re a Clippers fan um I will say though that the tenacity and the gritty nature in which this Clipper team is playing with because they don’t have Kawhi Leonard if they can keep that characteristic that is going to be Monumental for them down the stretch of the season because they’re playing with a defensive Edge that we haven’t seen from them with Kawai on the floor when he has played and just from the Clippers as a whole and they’re doing that to um you know fill the void of kawhai Leonard so they ten there’s tenacity on offense his tenacity on defense noral Norman Powell has been absolutely fantastic the question isn’t can they be good it’s how long they can be good without Kawhi Leonard that’s the biggest concern discussing NBA injuries and impacts great segment with both of you Ash Nicole Moss here our injury analyst Marty J also joining us breaking down injuries of note uh in the NBA all right so here’s the notable games tonight tough night for our Zack Aldridge both his teams facing each other when the magic visit Charlotte Celtics we mentioned them going for a six straight win at home with porzingis back kawhai is out and the Warriors in Thunder battling on top the West both chasing a 13th win tonight in the late tip [Music] box e
