talk about your acquisition to yeah um you know feel like we got a legitimate number one starter in in Garrett um you know left-handed ton of swinging Miss uh you know massive strikeouts and feel like um the best is still in front of them uh so you know we’re excited about what he brings and and obviously uh you know we needed to trade really good players in order to be able to do this but uh that’s that’s the cost right now um you know and we’re very much focused on what we were able to get uh you know the the excitement um that we have around adding him to the rotation uh you know it adds depth it adds quality uh you Bonafide uh Ace um you know and someone like like I said that we feel um you know is going to continue to improve really excited about getting him into our pitching infrastructure getting a chance for him to work with bals uh winning a bunch of games of park for us when did this really start to Pi Ste um know these are I think the the types of things where conversations kind of e and flow and uh a lot of checking in a lot of feeling like you’re getting momentum and traction and then uh kind of things start to diverge or diminish a bit um and then really started to pick up again I think over the last few days uh you know I think the general concepts maybe had all been discussed but it was just a matter of figuring out how we could put the pieces together given that you um obviously you did give up some top prospects but that you were able to kind of keep the major Le young Major League uh kind of core intact um I guess how much that benefit was that a benefit for you yeah um you know this is the type of move and and Garett obviously comes with with two years of control that uh you I think screams we need to compete in 2025 that we need to put a better team on the field uh and in order to do that sometimes you have to sacrifice potential future value um you know I think fortunately our system is is deep and there are there’s a ton of quality and a ton of really really good players um you know and so we felt like we we were in a position to withstand uh the cost um but there’s no no doubt in you know in uh the four guys that we gave up we gave up really good players do you feel um you’ll be continuing to add to the rotation or is this kind of the main piece that you had hope to add yeah we’re going to continue to to explore and be aggressive and identify opportunities to to continue to improve um you know that was always the plan when we got here and we feel really good about adding Garrett to to the rotation but um we’re also going to continue to try to find ways to improve uh well also continue to be mindful of trying to add to to the relief group um you know trying to still trying to balance out the lineup and find a right-handed bat um and probably looking at the the catching position behind Connor becomes even more important um so we’ve got a lot of work still to do yeah how do you address yeah um the catching situation is that something even before you kind of were looking to add depth but now it becomes obviously much more of a important piece yeah well I think first off we’re really optimistic about Connor and what he has done what he did last year I think he’s going to continue to improve um but we’re obviously going to need more depth we’ll explore all paths to to doing that um you know I think we could think about both the the near term and the long term um but given Conor’s still got plenty of controls and wear a Red Sox uniform for a long time um you know we feel like at least for right now we’ve got a starting C I know you mentioned his U Garrett’s huge fastb what what are you excited about getting him to your talking about getting your PCH pitching infrastructure in terms of just what he can add what are some of the things you think he can add yeah so I think uh you know there’s there’s the onfield piece and we see you know huge velocity ability to generate swing and Miss big breaking ball unique angles unique release um but on on top of that he’s new to starting right and um I think the relationship that he’ll build with Andrew and the rest of the pitching coaches um is important but just as important is uh relationship with the medical staff and the strength staff and uh you know our our analytics group to continue to understand um you know how he can get the best out of out of his stuff uh you know what pitches to throw where and when and how to make sure that we can keep him healthy and available to shoulder starter workload is there any concern just the health obviously last year was the first like full season and only season of rotation like how do you balance that I guess just leaning on him obviously pretty heavily but also making CH open yeah we’ll obviously do everything that we can um you know and I think his demonstration of being able to carry uh you know significant workload last year is a is a really really meaningful step um I’d also say that I think we have as good a support staff in our in our Medical Group and our strength group as exists in baseball so uh you know I think once they’re able to get their hands on him and understand what his routine is and what his program looks like uh hopefully we’ll be able to to work together to keep on field two stars this trade make it more likely that the other one would be a free agent uh it it could be um you know I think we we came here a few days ago thinking we needed to improve our rotation and you know if we exclusively look down One path we would be closed off from other options I think that’s still the case uh you know there are still um really really good players really good starting pitchers left on the free agent market and there are still uh conversations that we’re having um with with teams as trade targets you um you know you said g in a when you look at the second one you want to add is that necessarily top rotation mid rotation you have you feel you need to have somebody who’s you know number two guy or not necessarily uh I mean I think we’re we’re going to go out and try to try to bring in the best picture that we can um you know I don’t know that it makes a ton of sense to label a number uh around him because the the best you know the best uh opportunity that we have to you to add to the rotation just means we’re going more game so uh I think we’re be really openminded about that you mentioned getting uh you know the analytics Department you know they have Brian banister over there is Are there specific things doing your homework that you you see possible adjustments that you know your or might want to tweak with his usage or just let him be himself yeah well I mean I think I think the answer is is is probably both right like we want to lean into what he does particularly well and he does a lot of things really really well and you know just look at the strikeouts right and you and especially the strikeouts relative to walks um you know that’s a pretty good uh you know kind of underpinning for a really successful starting pitcher um you know I think once we have a chance to get know and have conversations with him uh you know we’ll lean on Andrew and the rest of the group but probably not fair to you know kind of talk about what adjustments we might make with him before we’ve had a chance to have that conversation with them but you probably did do homework on what you theoretically might we did we did a lot of work yeah times um when you look at his contractual situation how interested or are you SL how important is it to get talk about extension past two years with yeah I mean you know I think those are conversations that that we can have in time I think for right now uh we just want to get to know Garett and we want to do everything that we can to make sure that his transition to Boston is is as easy and seemless as possible uh just try to get comfortable is there something that you want to explore I think we’ll we’ll kind of figure that out well his reaction to yeah I had a chance to talk with him earlier uh you know I think this is didn’t seem like the type of situation that that snuck up on him right I think you know people have been talking about a potential trade for for months now um but he sounded genuinely excited about Boston being the destination and I think um you know the chance to to come and pitch in the AL East uh I think he recognizes the position player talent that we have around him uh and and the chance to pitch in in a rotation that is uh you know that is Young and and emerging um but also has some experience so uh he seems really really excited how interesting is he in aspect of you didn’t pitch in the minor before he made Major League only Minor League games have been sort of rehab type games it would seem like there’s a lot of growth there yeah I think there’s a this is a really unique path to the big leagues and um you know obviously gets to the big leagues as a reliever uh you know and um gets gets built out as a starter and you came out of the gates as good a starting pitcher as there was in all of baseball um you know I think he understands at this point what the what the work required of a starting pitcher is in order to stay healthy for a full season and so uh you know I think this was a a huge year for him just in terms of his development is kind of what we what we gathered but obviously it would be you kind of uh it does it doesn’t make sense for me to you know kind of speak to what he learned what he developed um you over the course of the Season we look at gave up I think a lot of people look at teal but just how strange is or difficult is it to give up you know Montgomery after just taking him and you guys were excited about that and then just kind of the perspective of your last two yeah uh there’s no doubt that um you know these these things hurt um at the same time you know I think it’s important that we remember that uh you know we we draft players and we invest in Player Development so that they can contribute at the big big level uh you know I think all four of these guys are going to be contributing big leakers um but the chance to turn some of our our talented young position players into a legitimate front of the rotation starter was one that we we needed to take advantage of um you know but but all four of these guys are are really good kids and and really good players um it just seemed like it was the right time and it was kind of the right way to PES you uh talk all Lu Li about uh we have had yeah we we we have tried to collect as much information as we possibly could um about any acquisition that that we made this one um you know is no different and in this one particularly I think because of you know the just the the Dynamics we wanted to make sure that we we did not leave any any stone on how important was it to you to get us timing wise make a splash before leaving here and making sure that as things were heating up that you weren’t left out yeah um you know I I don’t think uh it would be best for the Red Sox if our decisions or timing were dictated by uh where we are what other teams around us are doing um you know if this situation had had a chance to take place a week ago we we would have done it uh and if it took until next week that’s what that’s what we would have done um you know I think there’s probably something about 30 teams getting together in the same place for a period of time that maybe accelerates some of the conversations or allows them to unfold um with a little bit more cander that can be helpful but it’s really important I’ve said this before that we we run our own race um and and that means that we have to operate on our you feel like that right in of that market is going to start to move pretty quickly here uh hard to hard to forecast you know I think um each of these decisions is is this kind of weird balance of being interconnected and related in that you know when someone goes off the board it might cause a team or a player to to Pivot a little bit um but at the same time like I think there are unique situations that’s around all of them um and we’ll be you know we’re ready um and we’re prepared and we’ve got a number of targets that that we’ve identified and we just have to figure out a way to ask keep on was no secret that they were going to you know likely look to trade them at some point did you have people that you know did you sign somebody to follow last year or point last year we’ve uh we’ve done extensive work um you know it’s it’s hard to imagine that uh you know we would have been able to collect more information and watch more video watch more starts we saw him up close uh during the season um you know so I think the work that we did was extensive uh you know he’s just an immensely talented guy uh and and fortunately you know our our farm system was was is in a place where we had a number of really really talented young players that were able to uh to allow us to make the trade excited about any of your secondary Five Guys uh yeah I think we have you know a couple guys that uh that have a chance to you know to to provide some some big Le depth and you know some obviously arms that that you know we needed to stack up on um again get them you know get them into the system give Justin and and others a chance to work with them and and see what kind of development opportunities are these the level of guys who could be invited to Sprint training uh we we’ll start to kind of figure that out uh you know a lot of that will depend on how the rest of the offseason goes right thanks
