football truly ended now there’s great games everywhere I’m excited for this game for a variety of reasons Purdue I think is the better team on paper but Texas A&M is pretty uniquely propositioned to maybe exploit produce weaknesses that we’ve talked about a lot and I don’t know I don’t know what’s GNA happen I can see this one going either way this is in gamebridge Fieldhouse not a macki Arena game but still a pseudo home game in the state of Indiana for Braden Smith and Fletcher lawyer you know we love anytime those two get to play inside of State Lions cart how excited are you for this game first of all we’ve had to wait a week for Purdue basketball and uh we waited for a good one yeah it’s going to be a very intriguing matchup um and also Let’s uh let’s make it very clear this game is is is within Indiana state lines like I know the non-conference win streak thing died when they lost to Marquette but let’s make something very clear that was away from home inside the state lines of Indiana Braden Smith and Fletcher lawyer certified winners to the end but this Texas A&M team does present a matchup where you know you and I have talk to lengths about how we feel about you know Purdue and what what style of play what approach from the other team kind of works best to to beat Purdue and I think Texas A&M falls into that mold so it’s going to be a game I think is going to be extremely close yeah I think uh so Texas A&M does I think two of the four things that I would be looking for in like upset although this is barely even an upset like should we call this an upset like A&M’s not that much further behind Purdue in terms of caliber right I don’t know Texas nm’s offense is really gross to me yeah we can break that down but like there’s they 23rd on kenpom compared to 17th yeah the these are two teams to me that along with between 15 and 25 and eight people two top 25 teams yeah produce favored by two in a semi home game per kpom so like yeah how big of an upset you’re gonna hear us say upset it’s not really an up like these are two pretty evenly matched teams um so there’s there’s four things that I think I look for on like what can teams do to just capitalize on Purdue matchup issues uh here they are number one rebounding I don’t trust tkr a rebounder I understand miles col and other guys have like gang rebound at times uh Braden Smith’s a good rebounder Texas A&M’s the number one offensive rebounding team in the country that’s what they do they are better at this than anybody else and guess what they were number one in the country last season too and guess what they were number five in the country the season before that this is what Buzz Williams teams do like he has molded an entire program out of we are just gonna Chuck shots up and get putbacks and send Five Guys to the glass and destroy you physically with athletes that’s a very scary thing for Purdue because even if tkr is rebounding you’re gonna need like cam Heidi to be up physically for that challenge you’re gonna need miles kovin to be up physically for that challenge respectfully car I don’t know how much Purdue bench can really play in this game because you can’t like CJ Cox isn’t going to help you rebound right I don’t know that Jakari Harris is going to help you rebound so maybe I don’t know rally Burgess will Berg Caleb first looking at you guys but it’s a scary proposition so that’s category one category two um they turn teams over right we talked about the lack of secondary ball handling Texas A&M is top 70 in the country at forcing turnovers that’s a very good sign if you’re trying to cause some problems for Purdue the two things they don’t really do that is good news for Purdue Texas A&M has not been great at scoring at The Rim their offense is pretty inefficient from everywhere honestly but they only make 48% of their two-point shots so we talk about like Purdue giving up a huge percent at The Rim I don’t know A&M seems to miss a lot of shots at the rim and then just try and play uh putback ball and then second thing A&M plays pretty slow that’s a good sign for a Purdue team that I I think can struggle with teams that like to get up and down so I don’t know I think with my framing of this four weak areas for Purdue A&M is like Elite at two of them and then not really going to exploit the other two Advantage who in that oh see that’s I think that’s kind of speaks to why this is like a twoo two-point spread per kmom um you know it is a semi home game for Purdue and I do think that cam Heidi and covin more specifically cam Heidi being a major factor on the glass will be very important in this game with how they get how they put shots back um but this Texas Anam offense to me the reason why the offensive rebounding percentage is so high yes I do give them credit for actually doing it and being that high it’s because I think everyone on this team takes awful shots including their best player like it it could get to a point where Wayde Taylor and Zurich Phelps are having a who could take a worse shot off and those shots might go in that’s the scary part of it because there’s there’s those games where both shots are going in for those guys and then you know you find yourself way Taylor look up and he s30 but they could also shoot you out of basketball games they can um way Taylor’s been pretty great this year right he’s taking like a a maturity step which is kind of intriguing and like efficiency wise three-point shooting’s up two-point shots are up free throw shooting’s up assist rate’s up turnover rates down from last year like he’s kind of just gotten better at everything but has his scoring gone up or down though uh I don’t know what the per game numbers are I don’t have that in front of me all right I want to say that might been a little bit little bit but also you know way Taylor is a six-foot guard you know he’s not a not not necessarily big guy you know but he does have long arms he’s also not really a defensive guy I mean I I think there’s clear like Texas A&M has the front Court matchup Advantage but I would say that Purdue has the back court matchup Advantage yeah okay and I I want to push back on you a little bit I don’t think A&M necessarily has the front court advantage I think they’re just going to destroy them on the boards but like tkr is the best front Court player in this game no yeah you know he is no he is he is he’s like definitely the best front Court player in this game yeah he yeah yeah like we’re not taking Henry Coleman over tkr we’re not no way but the difference is they they have Henry Coleman and Fel Payne and Solomon Washington I was saying like maybe some of the parts yeah like Solomon Washington so Solomon Washington is their four right and he’s a six7 athlete and he’s basically just out there to rebound like I want to give you some numbers on Solomon Wat Washington he had six offensive rebounds against Texas Tech he had four offensive rebounds against kraton he had six offensive rebounds against Southern he is strictly out there to just run around and get putbacks and he’s very good at it and you mix that in like from a guy at the four spot right like that’s that’s not even their five Henry Coleman’s also a good rebounder for El Payne is also a good rebounder so when you start to think about that as far as the matchup goes like what is Purdue even do to combat that obviously Purdue doesn’t like leak guys out in transition because they’re content to slow it down but I’m just wondering like you know with their new small ball lineup is Cam Heidi even gonna be able to secure rebounds against Solomon Washington like that feels it almost feels like Purdue should think about playing some two big lineups again for this matchup put tkr at the four and get your best rebounder at the five we probably what first but that’s then you neutralize what makes your offense special so I don’t know it just I’m I’m very worried about rebounding in this game like A&M is so Elite at offensive rebounding and I just I I don’t think Hoven and Heidi are going to be able to jump over people for rebounds in this game yeah I think Purdue will be able to have the advantage from the three-point line though obviously if they can knock down shots at a high clip you know with get with possessions being long on both sides uh a big Fletcher lawyer game would do them well that would be big um you know one spot that I actually buy Purdue has an advantage on the boards in point guard spot they might need like 10 boards from Braden in this game it’s gonna it’s GNA be a true gang rebounding effort and because Wayne Taylor doesn’t really even like go for rebounds like he’s the only guy A&M will send everybody else to the glass and Wade Taylor stays back so like Braden if everybody else can just box just focus on just keeping people out and let Braden come scoop it up and high point it I don’t know we’ve seen him do it like Braden has some 10 rebound games I believe yeah just get just get everybody get a body and then Braden will be free to go get the board kind of need that um what’s the biggest mismatch here oh what’s the biggest mismatch here I will say this Wade Taylor has been remarkably consistent something that even Braden Smith has not been which is not not to sell on Wade Taylor like historically in the past Wade Taylor’s been erratic as hell this year he’s been in double figures every single game this season at least uh four assists in every game but two look at way Taylor out here growing he’s been great he’s truly been great one of uh you go to his campon player comps some interesting interesting Big 10 comps here cart Anthony Cowan boooy Yogi Ferell are three of his most 10 similar players to what he’s been this year those are players I absolutely love for what it’s worth yeah um I’m trying to think if I could point to one spot that they would have the clear band maybe at the three spot but that’s not like going to decide the game right no it’s not going to decide the game but they do start uh I think they start Hefner at that spot for Texas A&M but then they bring in OB like obaseki and Jay Carter play major minutes off the bench so that’s those are kind of the guys their best wings come off the bench with respect to Hugh Hefner’s uh grandson I think yeah rest in peace uh I don’t know I don’t know what I’m doing with that is not dead yes he is he is yeah oh okay well that means nothing for this game I don’t I don’t I don’t think might mean a lot when’s Hugh Hefner’s birthday do you think Hugh Hefner ever went to gamebridge fieldhouse yes you think so yeah because he was probably a big uh what’s it called Big Larry Bird fan why do I feel like hu Hafner and uh and Jean Katie have had a couple nights together they definitely have had a couple nights together for sure so yeah yeah uh wow I mean you you’re just not getting this anywhere else um yeah no this is this is a a statement game though I think early on for Purdue because I think there’s a lot of lot of warranted chatter around this team the makeup of it where they can go and things such as that and even though they are favorite in this basketball game I think stylistically it would ease things a little bit I think it would sorry not stylistically it would ease maybe questions a little bit if they could win a game playing a team like Texas an that plays stylistically like they play yeah I think I agree with that why why don’t you know that you agree with that I don’t know I if you’ve listened to the full episode the last couple days um I don’t know I’m in a weird spot right now with my my Purdue feelings well let’s get back to Our Roots here I I like to do this exercise sometimes when I when I find myself somewhat confused uh quickly who’s the better basketball team right now that stop don’t say anything else who’s the better basketball team it’s hard like are they both are they both playing their best just who’s the better basketball team right now right now yeah A&M D&M I mean a I’m very impressed by what A&M’s done in the last three weeks so blew out Ohio State beat kraton on a neutral beat Ruckers on a neutral they went two and one in the players era the only loss was to Oregon who won the whole thing they held Wake Forest to 44 points and then they just beat Texas Tech on a neutral a game that they led by double digits in the first half like they’ve really cut the water off the only game that they’ve struggled in for three weeks is Oregon and Oregon looks pretty good right now so look I I Purdue is very good I just think A&M’s very good too I think we’ve seen Purdue stinkers in a way we haven’t seen from A&M like what that Purdue game against Penn State was like like if you’re just listing performances by both these teams in every game the worst two performances of the year are produced two losses like and not close yeah that that’s a good point like the floor has been lower for Purdue than has been for A&M by by sizable margin and I don’t know that the ceiling’s been that different game not in Mackey but in gamebridge right this this is gonna be a tough one to pick yeah I don’t know I’m scared um do you think this is a Fletcher lawyer game because I one one pro Purdue thing I will say um I I still feel like Fletch is not getting nearly enough credit that he deserves like there were some dialogues going on in the Discord this week with other big 10 fans that were I think I can guess which fan base was trying to downplay just like who’s who’s the best backourt in the Big 10 and every time it came up it was like well it should be Purdue but I mean then again his lawyer really been that good and I was like yes he’s been insane he’s jumped everything he’s shooting 47% from the floor 42% from uh or excuse me 53% from three like this dude is taking more shots he’s taking more tough shots he’s doing more off the dribble he’s basically Al increased everything he does getting more attention from defenses while doing it like I I don’t know man I feel like he needs more credit but I guess A&M as a matchup does scare me a little bit for Fletch because it just doesn’t seem like the type of personnel that he necessarily wants to see yeah but also aren’t those the games that flesh usually goes off in yeah like that’s where you get flesh games like we thought I like I look back to last year and I was like ah Tennessee is going to shut that down nah Arizona guards aren’t going to let that happen and he had big games yeah also games where I was like ah you know Yukon game but we’ll never forget that we don’t want to bring that up though um this might just come down to just the back court just being special though like on while we’re talking about Fletch think so like if you’re going to struggle rebounding Braden and Fletcher just both have to be that special yeah yeah I could see that um the other match up we haven’t talked about Buzz Williams versus Matt Panner with a week to prepare say that one more time Buzz Williams versus Matt painer with a week to prepare okay that’s like that’s as about as lopsided to one side that side being Matt Painter as I could think I think so too yeah that’s the biggest mismatch in the game there there there’s the biggest mismatch all right it’s almost time for predictions uh before it is time for predictions I’d like to give you one more numerical thing please numerical me can I torvic you for a second I’ve been waiting to get torvi I’ve been waiting to torvic you so torvic I love the torvic tool where you can filter by date and you can look at how teams are playing recently versus on the sum of the season right A lot has shifted for Purdue I think that’s very clear like this is not the team they were the first week of the season they’ve really settled into the tkr small ball lineup they’ve I I think kind of become who they’re going to be for the rest of the season and teams have started to notice what they can pick at right over the last two weeks we’ve seen teams well aware of how to beat Purdue there’s a game plan on it and this is what you need to do um so I filtered by the last two weeks because again all the analytics sites say that A&M and Purdue are both top 20ish teams just looking at what these teams have done in the last two weeks like I mentioned A&M’s 4-0 they’ve got a bunch of good wins in that span be Katon Ruckers Wake Forest Texas Tech pdue is three and one they’ve taken care of business beat Maryland but lost to Penn State where does torvic have both these teams in the last two weeks Texas a& EV is the 30th best team in the country while going four and0 so maybe not as impressive of a run as you might have thought for A&M outside the top 25 Purdue 46 in the country 46 46th in the country in the last two weeks and uh card at match is my eye test which is why I’m so uneasy but like I I think you can just tell I’m I’m very uneasy about a lot of things Purdue right now match is my test for the last two weeks we have not been watching a team that holds up as a top 25 team and I don’t like they can get it right they can get it right but bradden’s been in and out tkr gives up as much if not more than he gets they’re getting zeros from the bench I I don’t know like it just it leaves an icky taste in my mouth you know what I mean like they survived against Maryland they got blitzed against Penn State I can’t really shake that from my head they survived against Maryland why did they survive dve because of Braden Smith and tkr and who was the coach on the other sideline Kevin Willard let’s keep this close give me the four minutes at gamebridge and a two possession game and let painter cook Buzz Williams I will say if it’s if it gets to booooy time I trust Purdue the what we call it the boo Zone the boo Zone we call it the dozone it’s the Purdue Zone this year that’s G it’s given too much credit to more of the people I don’t this Zone’s a little crowded it’s got to be player Le okay do the Amish Zone we we’ll we’ll think on it uh if this was at Mackie I’d be picking anymore uh Texas A&M has been the better team this season and played the better basketball it’s not at Mackey I think Texas A&M wins this game 76 to 70 73 close game close game close game any heroics like Wade Taylor buzzer beater or something um they force a bad Wade Taylor shot and they get a tip in to go up three put back put back to go up three for some reason tkr gets the inbound doesn’t find Braden has a half court he that’s that’s off yeah all right so I I feel like I’ve been dialed in on my puru predictions lately um picked Penn State to beat him picked the exact game flow of Purdue against Maryland like say what you want about us and whether we’re hating or not I don’t know just I feel like I’m pretty dialed in on what this team is right now and as I mentioned my read on this is this team is not a top 25 team right now and that’s that’s not men as disrespect I still think they can get there but like the non Braden non tkr guys are the guys that got to get them there tkr and Braden are like playing fantastic right now and I’m still feeling feeling icky about it which is the scariest part they need Jakari Harris they need CJ Cox they need somebody in the front Court Off the Bench to like make an impact but the problem is against Texas A&M I don’t think any of those guys have a matchup to make an impact right like you need guys that can rebound I don’t think anybody on this team can rebound so I’m left in a really really iffy spot here um I think Texas A&M wins if it was at Mackey I would pick Purdue but it’s not at Mackey um I think it’s going to play out similarly to maybe the Old Miss game where Purdue makes some statement plays early like we do see great Braden we see great Fletcher kind of kind of a game where I think we see the big three be a great big three and then for the first time this year maybe you get bit and lose a game because you don’t have anything outside the top three and A&M might get 20 off defensive rebounds in this game I just think it’s going to be a constant and I think you see pry get worn down in the second half and let it slip and uh no Macky no paint crew to carry them to Victory this time we’ll see hope we’re
