[Music] so this is definitely not something that I thought we would be bringing up as a Montreal Canadians discussion video because today we are diving into some of the trades that the Habs could have would have or maybe even should have made and why some of them haven’t been made yeah it’s kind of a weird video topic to introduce but let me explain the reason we are diving into this video commentary is because of an article published on r.org from 3 days ago this was written out and published by Marco Deo I’m sure most of y’all are familiar with him if you’re keeping up to date with the Montreal beat but this article in r.org is titled this Source they’re still on the lookout for the right fit the Montreal Canadians hunt for a top four right-handed defenseman now you can say whether or not a right-handed defenseman would have been the answer for the Montreal Canadians in yesterday’s 9-2 defeat at the hands of the Pittsburgh Penguins that in which is still kind of traumatizing to me personally there wasn’t even a David seard suiting up in that game like he was out strubel came in a decor with strubel mat ghouly Hudson Baron and Jacky got caved in and allowed nine goals on 33 shots from Sydney Crosby and Brian rust it’s kind of ridiculous how that happened but the Montreal Canadians according to Marco Deo are still on the hunt for a top four right-handed defenseman and included in this article is some Insider information from an Apparent Source that spoke out about why potentially Kent Hughes is hesitating to make these moves let’s go out there and read the Montreal Canadians are at a Crossroads at this Junction of their rebuild they’d like to keep improving but they fail to add proven or young but established players to their lineup in areas of need be it down the middle at forward or on the right side of their defense the Canadians have some of the worst depth in the NHL thankfully the Habs do have a legit top six center inck Suzuki while hoping that Daw can find his Mojo again and that 2024 draft pick Michael ha can eventually become an insurance policy but the same cannot be said for the right side of Defense which is filled with potential and very little certainty the only consistent right shot defenseman on the roster at the moment is 34-year-old David saard who will be a UFA by the Year’s end and one of the more coveted rentals in the market come February after that there are youngsters like David reinbacher who will lose most of the season to injury Justin Baron and Logan Mayu this is why we had ourselves a source that we saw in September tell r.org that the munra Canadians are still looking for the right fit but they want to be careful to not make a mistake since it’s likely going to cost a lot to acquire a right-hand defenseman now this article goes down a really interesting Direction after introducing the topic and going how the Habs have struggled on defense because it goes into one of the names that the Munro Canadians could have gone out there and acquired most recently the club was linked to former sixth overall pick David Urich the 6’4 rear guard had lost his footing within the Columbus Blue Jackets organization and the Habs are one of a nearly dozen teams to have called on him ultimately the youngster was traded to Minnesota for a package of draft picks and Prospect Damon hunt Canadians fans who saw an opportunity to address a position of need were confused by the Canadians lack of a better offer especially considering how much the organization had previously given up for both Doc and new hook not withstanding some excessively sad reactions on social media there were certainly some merits to those questions but as an NHL Pro Scout put it David Urich wasn’t the right fit now before we go to the actual quote from the NHL Pro Scout that was sourced out here in this article I wanted to dive into Ur first and foremost because I understand the philosophy here even without getting into the quote the philosophy makes sense obviously Montreal is stocking up on young guys that are good and that are supposed to be even better Mayu Baron even reinbacher you could say is in that conversation most of the value that lies in these MRA Canadians assets are in the youth Cole coffields lvovsky Suzuki these guys are good these guys are young these guys are probably going to get better but then you have yourselves the guys that are young and who are supposed to get better but who aren’t necessarily too fantastic right now the Kirby dos the Alex new hooks the arbor jais the Justin Barons the jadden stroubles you could even say the aforementioned Logan mayus and David rinbers reinbacher isn’t even going to play for most of the year and so when it comes to David Urich while you are getting a lot a lot maybe even the most potential out of any defender in the Canadians organization should he actually come to Montreal you are trading for potential and that I think is the main thesis that the NHL Pro Scout goes out there and brings up and it could be the main reason as to why Kent Hughes was reticent to make a trade involving David Urich considering the low price that he went for to get traded to Minnesota the scouting reports that we’ve put out on eoch question his foot speed hockey sense and defensive positioning said a pro Scout it’s very easy for a coach GM to sit there and watch highlight reels and think he’s the answer but there’s a lot of risk around players like that and if you’re Montreal watching Doc or new hook play right now are you going to blow all your assets in such a risk I wouldn’t and this is the main idea Montreal has already made these trades capitalizing on the youth they traded away Alexander Romanov who at the time was a Stanley Cup finalist he did play some games with the Canadians in that playoff run he quite frankly wasn’t the best but he was okay and he was in there he got his name into the conversation he had that experience and yeah before you call my bluff look it up he played games four and games five against the Tampa Bay Lightning in that Stanley Cup finals run he had a goal like what crazy right it doesn’t even feel real Alexander romanov’s first NHL playoff goal came in the Stanley Cup finals in his debut in the series but that guy is a continuous minutes muncher to this day he is a 20 plus minute defenseman for the New York Islanders and while he doesn’t produce any points he has a very defined role and he brings a lot of value meanwhile the guy that they traded Romano for the first round pick which was inevitably flipped to become Kirby do is still trying to find his way and I think a lot of people would say that there is much more to Kirby Doc’s game right now now than we are seeing for Alexander Romanov I’m not going to say that he’s got any super high ceiling or potential afterwards but for what he is right now there is already good value there there’s a high floor and Montreal traded that away meanwhile you go over to Justin Baron guess what the Habs traded away AR ter leenan that’s a fantastic player and now he is one of the best players on the Colorado Avalanche as a continuous Point producing machine guess what he had a 50o season with call colado in the First full year he had spent there in only 60s something games not to say that trading arter lean in a way was a bad thing when you consider the age when you consider the timeline here obviously a guy like leenan is a bit older than the projected window of opportunity for the Montreal Canadians and what they’re trying to build but if you swap the players around let’s say instead of having Doc and Baron on the Habs today you have leinen and you have Romanov that’s significant defensive depth and that’s really good forward scoring from Le who has absolutely grown into one of the more underrated players in the league the point that we’re making here is that with these traits trying to capitalize on the youth trying to go for potential we are really seeing the Montreal Canadians going through growing pains in ways that they may not have exhibited had they just stuck around with keeping Alexander Romanov and keeping a guy like arter leenan it’s not even to say that leenan is too old I mean he’s 2013 drafted he’s just four years older than Suzuki Alexander Romanov was 2018 drafted so he’s even younger than Suzuki it’s just Montreal decided to place their bets put all their chips into the Youth of the future take advantage of guys who are struggling with the teams that initially drafted them with high prosperity and saying hey we’ll give you a home Justin Baron we’ll give you a home new hook we’ll give you a home we’ll try to capitalize on what it is you bring as a prospect and we’ll try to cultivate that out of you here in Montreal whereas the other guys that they traded away were good NHL players who eventually just became even better so for David Urich a lot of the same red flags could very well have been tossed out there and I think it’s a realistic idea to say that because of those prior two trades new hook doc because they haven’t necessarily worked out all too well it could be seen as one of the biggest obstacles that Kent Hughes has mentally speaking and potentially a source of fear into making even more trades for younger guys David Urich is supposed to be a great Prospect and I think a lot of people thoroughly believe that but even though there are things that make him fantastic you still have to acknowledge what actually happened he couldn’t crack the Blue Jackets Decor was that unfair sure were the Blue Jackets prioritizing worse players with worse potential yeah probably but there had to be a reason right I don’t think all NHL GMS are stupid they’re not going to go out there and dismiss a guy just because so want you to let me know your thoughts in the comments section below about David Urich and why Kent Hughes didn’t make this trade do you think this trade fear is Justified or is it really just Hanky Panky speculation thoughts in the comment section below I hope you enjoyed this the9 and bye [Music] [Music]
