and with that welcome inside this midweek edition of big 10 today presented by Gatorade I’m your host Rick piso Rael Davis joins me shortly he’ll be sitting right here looking back on Tuesday’s Big 10 men’s action looking ahead to Wednesday’s schedule and sharing his up to the minute top five which includes a handful of surprises but we begin this morning with our top story We Now sit just two sleeps away from kickoff of the first ever 12 team college football playoff and while top overall Seed Oregon remains in wait and sea mode until January 1st Indiana gets things started Friday at Notre Dame Penn State welcomes SMU to State College and Ohio State plays host to Tennessee both those games slated for Saturday December the 21st yeah I mean it’s a home game me treat it like any other home game you know it’s historic but it’s still our Fe our Stadium you know and our job as a defense is to defend that and we will they do have a very talented football team and they do have many weapons that they can get the ball to so it forces you to be able to say hey man everybody’s got to do his job you know which is what you obviously say from the beginning but it’s really more valuable and you say hey this is sometimes you say we got if we take this guy away we’re going to be able to do this and that and so to me we have to be sound across the board and everybody is going to matter who you’re matched up with yeah I think each team is different they all got their different weapons different pieces different ways they can impact the game but with SMU what I’ve seen is their quarterback he pretty much make them run he can make plays with his arm his legs just extending plays uh making people miss so I would say the quarterback for him is it’s the biggest thing I’ve seen this game comes with a lot of different things the history obviously um you know instate rival as well um and then just being the you know the first game of the playoff you know and so I think all those things combined I mean just create a lot buzz and excitement um you know both um inside the building and then outside and uh I know we’re we’re just excited to get ready and going it’s amazing I mean best in Indiana you know it’s uh you know when they made that selection I was on the phone with my mom and dad and you know they told me who we were playing and I was excited I was so excited you know I was it was an opportunity to be able to you know their best against our best they ranked we’re ranked you know they have a great program we have a great program and so just to be able to Duke it out and you know kind of compete at a high level that’s something traditional and I’m I’m excited hopefully we can make this a real rivalry and you know we play them every year so let’s get some more perspective on each of those first round matchups as you welcome in Bruce Feldman college football Insider for the athletic also does some sideline reporting for Fox Sports Bruce let’s start chronologically Indiana at Notre Dame on Friday night it will be a hostile environment we saw the hooers in a similar situation when they traveled to Ohio State despite the fact that they lost that game how much do you think that experience helps them when they get ready to go to one of the most historic venues in the history of our sport well hopefully for Kurt signet’s sake it helps them a lot because one of the issues that happened uh for them in that game was Ohio state gave them all sorts of issues pressure-wise and their running backs Indiana really struggled to pick it up and I think you know it’s a pretty seasoned experienced team certainly Curtis roor has played a lot of football but I think being that stage as as you’re talking about to play in such a hostile environment against a team with Elite Talent I mean they’re not at James Madison anymore and and you’re going to see really good players especially on the defense at at Notre Dame so I think for them to have gone through it and to really you know they struggle with it to be perfectly honest I mean they had a good start to the game and then it kind of fell apart we’ll see how they respond I think because it’s Kurt cetti and I think it’s a really well coached team I think they will make a lot of adjustments and be much more dialed in especially on offense with with dealing with the pressure because that was a big issue for them and they and they just kind of fell apart I’m fascinated to see this game obviously I’m excited about the the environment we’re going to see on TV and everything else I just think it’s going to be an awesome Friday night if Notre Dame is not the most talented roster Indiana will see this year certainly the second most and if they’re the second most it’s very close to Ohio State so when you start to consider what Indiana has to deal with from that perspective what’ll be the biggest issue the biggest challenge that the hooers have to solve if they’re to pull off what is considered an upset you know I I think it’s going to be really stuff they’ve seen like you look at Ohio State has a big mobile quarterback that’s certainly what Riley leard is Riley leard is pretty Dynamic Runner and you see really good running backs that that uh Notre Dame has very explosive in the Run game I think they do I think there’s parallels the thing that’s different and this is a benefit for Indiana is they don’t there’s no Jeremiah Smith at Notre Dame or AA there’s they’re just they’re pretty good outside they’re not great outside so I think in that standpoint um you know Indiana should match up better with this team you know again and I thought you know pwns and the and the DBS at Indiana actually held up pretty well in that but now it’s it’s it’s less of an issue less of a problem but I think again and for Indiana it’s you know can they do some of the things they did against Nebraska where they just look like they were a a step ahead of Nebraska that was just the week before you know that that Ohio State came so I’m interested to see how how kind of dialed in the offense has been because they were really sharp earlier in the season and then like I said they they fell apart in the game against Ohio State I think they’ll be prime for this I can’t wait to see what it’s going to be like I think they’re I think Notre Dame’s going to get their best punch I don’t know if it’s it’s going to be good enough for Indiana let’s move ahead to one of the Saturday games the early game in State College it’s Penn State SMU two teams coming off losses in their respective Conference Championship games I think for a lot of Penn State fans SMU though Bruce is a little bit of an unknown many didn’t even understand that they’re in the ACC before they lost to that Clemson team in the championship game what does SMU provide what’s the biggest I guess trademark or personality trait of this SMU team that Penn State faces on Saturday afternoon know even though Rett Lashley is is a made his trade as an offensive guy I think they have gotten really good on defense the run defense is really formidable it’s gotten a lot better over the last couple of years the defens coordinator Scott Simons has been there for three years they’re really good they’re really sound and I don’t think there’s like a lot of Elite Talent on the field in regards to like if you’re an NFL evaluator now their their running back Rashard Smith who started his career as a receiver at Miami he is an explosive athlete he can make big plays but I think ultimately it’s really the defense where they’ve where they’ve really flourished and I know Kevin Jennings since he took over as a starter has been very good and that happened in September but the Penn State Run game you can just ask Oregon I mean they are very dangerous you got two Elite running backs they look terrific I thought in the Oregon game you obviously have a Difference Maker tight end and Tyler Warren that creates all kinds of problems and Drew Aller even without Bo prula for this game I think Drew Aller showed he can be a he can be a problem for you in the Run game not just with his arm so are we going to see the Penn State offense that really look like it was hitting its stride under Andy cotal Nikki when they played against a really good Oregon team because that’s the team that they can be a problem for anybody and I I do think that this Penn State talent wise offense ly especially with that kind of it’s a different kind of three-headed monster two Elite running backs and a and a really really versatile tight end in addition to obviously a strong armed quarterback I think that’s different than anything anything that uh SMU has seen this year I mean it’s not a great year for offense in the ACC by any stretch um you know and and look they had some problems early on with Kate kumnick and Clemson and I don’t think Clemson’s Talent at least in this way is similar to what Penn State’s going to go and then the other part of this is It’s pen it’s Happy Valley it’s going to be a wild atmosphere for a playoff game we’ll see how they respond how cold it’s going to be whatever those things I think once they once SM gets in the game I think they’ll probably be able to handle some of the elements but I do think this is a different kind of test for them that they’ve seen in the ACC and another game which will help Define James Franklin’s tenure at Penn State the storyline preseason was you have to get to the playoff now the storyline at home against a lower seated opponent is you have to win your playoff game game and move on to the next round Ohio State Tennessee Saturday night before we get into the matchup Bruce I want to know what your take is on Ryan day and this staff and the job they had to do one coaching statement that’s always ringing true you can’t let one loss become two so how much of a focus do you think it was for day and the staff to Simply get this team past the Michigan loss before it started the focus on Tennessee yeah I actually think it’s a big internal thing just in terms of how they coach it you know like look they they self- admittedly said they didn’t do a great job of play calling against Michigan I felt like they played into Michigan’s hands being there the other thing that you could feel with them a lot this year was it felt like they were tight and they have more Talent than everybody certainly you know as as good as Tennessee is especially on offense especially you know they have a high level running back um Nico the young quarterback’s really talented but he is really young um Penn State’s I mean Ohio st’s more talented they are and you look at they have Playmakers at all three levels on the defense they have the most talented receivers in the country two pretty special running backs it’s the offensive line that will be under Fire you know because obviously they’ve had two big injuries there they’ve shuffled guys around but by the same token Tennessee’s offensive line is has been very suspect too especially from a pass blocking standpoint we know Jim noll’s guys can really get after people I think if Ohio state cuts it loose and look has a blueprint for this in in this regard couple of years ago they lose to Michigan it was a kind of gut punch of a loss for for for that program and then they bounced back and they went toe-to-toe with a really talented Georgia team and they should have beaten them they didn’t but they came close within a field goal I think if they kind of go off that like look we can we can beat anybody let’s just give you know we got nothing to lose let’s just play like it I think they will I think they will respond here I mean it’s a home game I think this is a big challenge you know it’s not like Tennessee hasn’t played in hostile environments and they have a really good running back in Dylan Samson but I think it’s to me this is all about how how loose Ohio state is if Ohio State plays tight they’ll lose if they play like they like they did against Georgia and again they had CJ Stout it was different you know from that standpoint but I think from the mindset of just cut it Loose I think they they’ll win this game all right Bruce one quick thought on Oregon I know the Ducks are in weight and sea mode I I understand you’ll also be traveling to the Rose Bowl when that game kicks off its traditional date on January the 1st out in Pasadena if you’re Dan Landing I know he would never say this publicly if you’re a member of this team do you think you’d rather face Tennessee in that quarterfinal match up at the Rose Bowl or would you rather have round two against Ohio State you know Dan Lanning thinks differently than I do I think Dan Lanning in his mindset truly is I don’t care who we play we’re going to be Oregon and that’s going to be good enough and I think that’s kind of been the secret sauce you know they they have risen up to every Challenge and I think because of that the other thing is he has the quarterback on his side who I think I would have by far the most confidence in this tournament in Dylan Gabriel played in a lot of big games played well in a lot of big games and he’s like a he’s a true leader and I think when you have that um I think you you have that’s why to me they’re the favorite and that’s why I think they’re going to win this playoff because of the leadership with Lanning and Dylan Gabriel had no question about it post championship game TZ Johnson said that he actually went to Dan Lanning and said before the fourth quarter against Penn State coach we need your best 15 minutes A team that is completely locked in mentally and focused I agree with you they are the favorite to win it moving forward in the first ever 12 team college football playoff always great to catch up with Bruce Felman Bruce we appreciate the time and the Insight yeah enjoy the games thanks for having me and so while that 12 team football bracket gets underway this weekend it’s final four time in NCAA women’s volleyball national semifinals set for Thursday pit Louisville on one side on the other a pair of big 10 Rivals Penn State Nebraska all chalk into the final four of course this Nebraska Penn State Showdown will be a rematch of a regular season match that was played in the final week of the regular season when Penn State beat Nebraska three sets to one actually snapped a 25 match win streak for the Huskers also earned pen State at least a share of the regular season title the Huskers would join them to share that title the next day now they’ll do it again with the stakes a whole lot higher we’ve had a goal to get back to the final four and um I mean we achieved that goal but the job’s not done and I think just having that same mentality of like the next point the next match um taking what’s right in front of us and just going with that will help us a lot yeah I mean the expectation here is to make it to a national championship so I think with that it comes a lot of pressure but at the same time we like to tell each other that we’re playing for each other and I think that’s what keeps us balanced and calm because we we’re always going to have pressure when you play in a program like this but I think it’s about just playing for each other and not listening to outside noise no I’m just so happy and so excited for the program um to be able to go to the final four I’m excited for our L um you know it’s just been I’m I’m really grateful for all the people who’ve reached out to wish this team good luck and you know obviously my former teammates and players that came before me but um you know I’m I’m just I’m I’m really excited and I’m excited for this team to have that experience speaking of cool experiences if you can find your way to Iowa City on February the 2nd I highly recommend we just learned on Wednesday morning that Caitlyn Clark’s number 22 Jersey will be retired fittingly on 22 and to make it even better Iowa takes on USC and juj gu Watkins who took over the mantle as the best player in women’s college basketball this year Caitlyn Clark’s Jersey officially set to be retired in Iowa City we’ll get big 10 today is fueled by Gatorade is it in you it was a perfect night on the men’s side in big 10’s basketball Ohio State took care of business against Valpo had a very excited locker room Michigan State got a test early from instate rival Oakland As Tom mizo and Greg campy wore two of the greatest Grinch sweaters you’ll ever see coaches wear during a basketball game and how about Maryland and UCLA each not just winning but each scoring exactly 111 points talk more about that with rayel Davis as he joins us now let’s start with UCLA because this is a team that’s now won nine straight Rael after an early season loss we know they’re going to play defense under Mick Cronin but I think what we see right now from their offense the depth the different ways that they can score makes this a really difficult basketball team to try to defend yeah I thought this was UCLA’s best offensive performance all season long you get Five Guys in double figures you make 10 threes you get 26 assists sharing the basketball at a high rate they dominate inside like they’ve been doing all season but they got Dylan Andrews going and Dylan Andrews needed to get going this season been struggling as of late but him going for 21 six assists only one turnover knock down 3 threes that was big time because in the Big 10 you can guard your tail off you look at Maryland last season one of the better defensive teams in the in the country but you can’t win in the Big 10 if you can’t score the ball I thought UCLA’s offense was big time last night and Tyler Bido is proving that he’s going to be a mismatch issue for a lot of different teams he’s a guy who can work down low but there you see how versatile he is because he can draw bigs out to the perimeter he is a willing and able three-point shooter this team has a lot of different guys Rael that can play a lot of various roles and I think that’s something that Mick Cronin loves to be able to work with oh it’s big time I mean Tyler Bido has to be one of the more gracious surprises we’ve seen in the Big 10 so far his ability to score on the Block both shoulders knock down threes Eric Daly’s been big time as well that little tandem they have going inside has really LED them to a lot of these victories that’s why I was so good to see even Kobe Johnson played well last night skot Clark made some shots when UCLA’s guards get going that’s when we’re going to see the best version of this team coming into this season it was thought that UCLA will have one of the better back courts not just in the Big 10 but in the country and those guards just haven’t carried their weight but last night against prview they were outstanding they got 111 points Sebastian Mack only played three minutes it was Big Time all around so I mentioned the sweaters that both Greg campy and Tom ISO were Dawning for their matchup on tu night remember here are two guys that have combined to be on their respective Sidelines for more than 70 years C’s been there for 40 ISO for more than 30 you go ahead and choose who wore it better by the way these guys separated by almost exactly a year in age and speaking of Separation Michigan State able to get some in the second half I really like what I saw from zavier Booker last night I think he’s the key uh Jaden aens is going to give you what he’s going to give you I think J Richardson is proving to be a really Dynamic freshman but if Booker can shoot like he shot last night then Jackson Coler messes around goes for 14 and 13 doesn’t have to do that every night but then Michigan state becomes a much more dangerous offensive team I mean you look Xavier Booker in his second year hasn’t been a player we thought he should have been coming out of high school but this was his game I think if he can have this type of performance maybe not get to 18 points but just come in and exhaust your energy come in and give all you have for four five minute spurts protect the rim guard at a high level six rebounds and 17 minutes are big time but offensively he just let the game come to him he was open he shot it he had in that mid-range got to the got to the backboard rebounded at a high level finished around the rim I think if you get this version of Xavier Booker with the development of Jackson kler zapala has been good on the glass that gets Michigan State back to what they’ve been because this is the first season and maybe the last three or four that I felt this was Michigan State basketball it was def defend it was rebound it was run they pounded Oakland on the glass by 20 and had 20 offensive rebounds Michigan state has that fight back but I love what Xavier Booker got going last night and Booker may just be one of those guys who’s better as a secondary score doesn’t feel the pressure of having to be the lead dog that’s when he probably provides the biggest benefit to Michigan State Maryland drops 111 against St Francis and they exploded after about 10 12 minutes it got off to a slow start for everybody except selton Miguel this guy has been around college basketball for a long time third different school but we saw rayel last night scoring facilitating rebounding as well he’s a guy that we’re not talking a lot about right now that could end up if he continues to play at this level and I think he can I don’t think it’s out of the box to say he could be a second maybe even Fringe First Team all big 10 kind of player oh no question about it he just needed time to get comfortable into with Coach Willard wning from him on both ends of the floor coming into the season as a transfer average 15 points a game a season too you knew he could score the ball you knew he could shoot the ball well he just didn’t have his footing coming in this season he was big time last night 24 points four assists four six from Deep when they have him going it makes Maryland so tough to guard because we know Rodney rice can put the ball in the four jacobe gpy can score the ball at a high level and then you look at Marland with Derek Queen and Julian ree probably the best front Court in college basketball right there with Michigan I I like what Maryland has going what they do defensively along with when they make 15 threes they get 26 assists they go 62% from the field this Maryland team is tough and dangerous just turned it over five times too which is really impressive when you think about how large the lead was late you can sometimes get a little bit sloppy turps didn’t do that good sign for Kevin Willard moving forward so it’s a great sign for Jake debler is the development right now of Devon Royal I think this young man could be the breakout star of the year in inside the Big 10 he has everything his skill set is there when he puts it all together like we saw him do on Tuesday night he becomes one of the best players I would argue not just in this conference I think if he plays this way he could be considered one of the best players in the country oh for sure you go back to last season when Ohio State made that turn and Jake deer took over the job it was the play of Devon Royal that led them down the stretch at 66 220 he’s not the most physically imposing guy he’s not the biggest guy down low but he just understands how to score the basketball he gets angles he knows jump fakes ball fakes he knows how to move it he knows how to play without it a career high in his first start of a of his career was huge 31 points 15 rebounds you get Bruce Thorton going you get John Mobley going that’s going to be big for Ohio State because you go back to that game against Auburn over the weekend Janai broom just had his way ug so it was good to see Ohio State dominate inside and get somebody back on the glass at one point you looked over to the Valpo bench after a royal bucket Midway through the second half and the head coach looked at the rest of his staff and the rest of their staff just Shrugged as if to say the guy on a heater there’s pretty much nothing we can do 31- 15 as Ohio State picks up a much needed bounceback win much more from rayell still to come back on Big 10 today with a look at your Gatorade game leaders leading scores in the Big 10 how about a freshman leading the charge Dylan Harper nearly 24 points a game Nick Martinelli John tan also at or above 20 per auson Garcia Bryce Williams Trey Kaufman Ren kind of doing what we expected those guys to do Harper’s been fantastic just leading an amazing group of freshmen right now inside the Big 10 alongside Derek Queen Jace Richardson some others who are doing great work in their first year in college basketball so these are stats what we’re about to show you well this is going to be rael’s opinion as we work through at this current moment based on what he’s seen the top five Big 10 teams to date at number five you have Michigan State really starting to play as you had said just a few minutes ago the kind of basketball that Tom iso’s teams play when they play their best and make their runs in March yeah when I came into the Big 10 playing for Coach pter EP Purdue we get ready to play Michigan State and the seniors talk to you the Juniors talk to you and you’re a little bit scared they’re going to punk you they’re going to out physical you they’re going to run up and down the floor I think this Michigan State team is back to that flying a little bit under the radar but they’re tough again they rebound the ball at a high level on the offensive end and the defensive end they protect the basket they protect the paint and the first step to protecting the paint is having guards on the perimeter that keep the ball in front of them you think of Jeremy FS Trey Hollman Jay nakin do a tremendous job defending and then offensively you see guys Jackson Coler development you see Xavier Booker go off last night Jaden Akens has been consistent Frankie fitler hasn’t even gotten going yet he’s a guy that averaged 20 points a game a season a go this Michigan State team they’re back in the locker room as a team as a unit coach ISO has the squad’s ear I love what they have going it’s rebound it’s defend it’s run and they’re back to it you get freak athletes too like Cohen Carr coming off the bench to do his thing this is a very very deep Michigan State team and I think coach ISO has now settled on the lineup he likes the best and if Jackson kler continues to play at this level he’s able to mix and match that lineup because he knows what he’s going to get down low 9-2 on the season of course unbeaten an early Big 10 play before they get back into it here in a couple of weeks at number four you’re Alma mat been a bit of an up and down start to the season for Purdue but a lot of that is based on the fact that they’ve played one of the country’s toughest schedules yeah you lose that markette you lose to Texas A&M you go out to Penn State you lose to a really good Penn State Squad it doesn’t change my opinion on the boilers I think they’re one of the better teams in this league one of the better cores in this league we think of Bradon Smith probably one of the better point guards in the country Trey Kaufman Ren has developed himself and probably one of the best back to the basket players in the country Fletch alur can make shots all over the floor but it’s going to be about miles koven and cam Heidi you see in their mte where they go out to California and the ry’s children invitation it was cam Heidi in one game that led him the victory of Old Miss and that next game it was miles koven going off for 20 and got them that Championship so I think when Purdue has those two guys going getting some production from their Five Spot I think they have a chance to win the league but when you have three guys with the experience of Fletcher Braden Trey Kaufman Ren I think that puts you in position in games but playing this tough early schedule got these guys ready for Big 10 play the game at Maryland down the stretch I think it opened their eyes and I think Braden Smith is really going to be a guy to lead these guys to some victories I give tkr a lot of credit because he knew he’d play a different role but after the Jacobson injury that role has become so prominent he’s taking it on really doing extremely well Oregon is at number three this is interesting in for me that you have Oregon and not UCLA as one of the new West Coast teams inside your top five what do you like about the Ducks I just like their dep offensively and UCLA amazing defensively but like I said earlier if you can’t score in this league you’re not going to win this league you look at Maryland the season too really good defensively but you look at this Oregon team they get it done on both ends of the floor and they haven’t even figured it out as a collective yet offensively defensively they are stout Nate bidle inside kwami Evans Supreme cook on the boards and they got three guards that defend at a high level and Jackson sh stad TJ bomba you throw in Kean barel and then on the offensive end I don’t think they played their best basketball I haven’t seen a game where they’ve had all five starters on the same page you think of Brandon Angel thinking Nate ble Jackson Shell stad they get those three going along with keesan bartholomy Off the Bench I think Oregon is a team that can do some D Alman also all he does is win uh you’ll get to know him you’ll get to understand even though he’s understated he is a phenomenal basketball coach and that will really help a team that does have a lot of new faces and of course in a new place first year inside the Big 10 at number two Michigan what a great start for Dusty May and Company they have a monster upcoming matchup on Wednesday night against top 10 Oklahoma but to date May has lived up to what he said media days he I’m going to play the two seven Footers at the same time Vlad golden Danny wolf I understand wolf spends a lot of time out on the perimeter but you can’t question the method when it’s working as well as it’s working it’s been phenomenal to watch just good basketball you look at Vlad golden you look at Danny wiff Danny wolf two big men that do two completely different things vladislav golden is a load inside finishes at The Rim rebounds at a high level we’ll go dunk on you then you look at Danny wolf he is just a unicorn he can get that defensive rebound burst out push it in break make the right decision for a teammate he’s really good in ball screen action at 7 foot that ball screen action against Wisconsin that Michigan had going with Danny wolf and vad golden was unguardable when you surround those guys with three Shooters on the floor where that’s namari Bernett Rody Gale Trey Dons even San Walters it just gives them too much space to play with my only issue with Michigan right now is averaging 15 turnovers per game but they show up that turnover and they rebound the ball that they’ve been doing they’ll be right there at the end of the season I teased at the beginning of the show that number one will come as a surprise it came as a surprise to me I love what Maryland has done so far but I am a little bit that you have them right now as your top team based on what you’ve seen to date in the Big 10 why did you look at UCLA right now we’re raving about their defensive numbers well Maryland’s right there Maryland’s right there at the top of the in the top of the country in defensive efficiency but they have the offense to go along with it they have five guys at average double figure points they have probably the best front court or best one or two front courts in college basketball with freshman Derek Queen going to be a lottery pick Julian Reese is a season veteran if in this conference and I just love what coach Willard did in the transfer portal jacobe Gillespie is that computer point guard that John beine talks about being able to make a play off the ball screen get teammates in action just control the pace of the game Rodney rice at your two guard is a bucket we’ve seen him go for 28 points in a half this season he can straight fill it up and then selt Miguel he got going the last few games all three of those guards shoot it over 37% from Deep they can all make plays off the bounce they can are guard their yard on the defensive end and then the development of tari gari Off the Bench and jayen L jayen young Off the Bench you get desan Harris Smith going a little bit maybe getting to the free throw line I really like what this Maryland team does on both ends of the floor you dominate Ohio State at home and then you go on the road in one of the tougher environments in macki Arena and you’re in a two-possession game with a chance to win it with Julian ree fouling out I think Maryland is really playing Big Time basketball on both ends of the floor it’s not being talked enough all right let’s mention some teams that just missed your top five Northwestern UCLA we discussed already at length Wisconsin little bit of a rough December after a great November Penn State probably not on this list because of that loss to ruter but Illinois one possession away from beating number one Tennessee and they don’t crack your top five still you’ve got to be really impressed with yaka chones eich these guys are locked and loaded oh for sure I think yaka shones is the first round draft pick probably top 10 but I look at Illinois and I look at the five last five minutes to the game against Tennessee they didn’t make a field goal they had nowhere to go offensively it was yaka shones in the ball screen it was make a shot young fow we’ll live with it it was miss it and we’ll live with it they don’t have anyone else in the half court that can get them going it’s a thing where Illinois they’re making shots they’re running up and down they’re hanging on rims they’re playing well but when that ball slows down like Tennessee slowed it to a halt they don’t have many places to go on a half court Thomas slav V was a noshow the physicality of Tennessee kind of bothered him you even go go back to that Northwestern game down a stretch of games it can’t just be yaka shones you got to have more guys that can put the ball in the basket because when you have a guy like mhack that can take that away you do want an alpha dog and yaka shones has proven that he is that guy he is willing to take and make some of the most difficult threes you’ll ever see but Illinois does not crack rafels up to the minute top five all right we’ll leave the beaten path when Big 10 today returns as I and we are thrilled to share some information today on the Michigan Sports bus this conference with two key members of that group Olia deadia Adam hellstein are with us Olia I I want to start with you and for those who don’t know much about the origin of this conference and really the growth that it has enjoyed could you tell us a little bit more about that absolutely well first and foremost thank you so much for having us here today we are so excited this is so this is so much fun but um a little background on Michigan sport business conference is this was our 13th annual conference but it is completely different from where we started we started in a small room in the Raw School business super few attendees um obviously a great network of alumni but what it has grown into is what we’re so proud of this year we had over 1100 attendees with students coming from all across the country west to east coast and our main goal is bringing together both the current and Future Leaders of the sport business industry and that is exactly what it has become we take over the school of Kinesiology building at in an arbor and we fill that we fill the place up we decorate it we go the night before and we make it so official so professional but our biggest pride and joy is that we are completely student run we have a planning team of 39 students and my me myself I am the media relations manager as well as a Partnerships account manager so I work with Adam and a team of six others bringing in conference Revenue but we also have an event planning team a marketing team a creative Team all working to together to put this conference on and is so much work so many people and so many influential and amazing speakers in this business Adam tell us a little bit more about that who you guys have heard from and how they’ve kind of influenced those that are able to attend the conference yeah so this year we were lucky enough to have two of the uh Sports Illustrated most 50 most influential people including uh Jeffrey Kessler who’s a partner Winston STW he’s leading has a lot of relevance to where we are at Big 10 Network given that he is leading a lot of the litigation with uh College athletes in nil and the paid uh we also had Julie man from Angel City FC um and our last keynote was Mary Ellen Co who was Chief business officer of YouTube had a lot of good things to talk about so a lot of great influential speakers a lot of great influential and like very important panel topics that are going to Define you know what the next year of the industry next five years the industry are going to look like but I mean the conference as as Olivia is saying it’s gone on it’s the 13th year this year so there’s been a lot of influential speakers down the line last year we had Stephen A Smith from ESPN we’ve had Uh Kevin Warren who was the commissioner of the Big 10 at the time uh Jimmy Batar from ESPN so a wide array of a lot of different really cool speakers obviously tapping into that Michigan Network to get a lot of them here but for the most part just you know us as students you know using our alumni using our board um to find the right people find the connections and get them out to an arbor yeah that’s a who’s who of some of the industry’s biggest names right there unbelievable speakers and Olivia I know that you are part of a group of females who are a big part of the female run leadership of this conference explain a little bit more why that means so much to you why it means so much to the conference and how it all works together yes well for starters I have to give a major shout out to our two co-presidents from this past year Annie sky and Natalie Gormley they are absolutely incredible both seniors that I’ve worked with all four years at Michigan and they were our two presidents and this was our first year with two female presidents um of msbc as well as having a majority female Le planning team which to me personally when you think at the sport industry traditionally you look back and you think it’s a very male-dominated career um and a very male-dominated space But seeing that trajectory really change and seeing so many females kind of talk about their engagement within the industry and how passionate they truly are and seeing that come to life on the planning team has just been absolutely incredible and very motivating because you know what seeing that drive and having that kind of women support network along with our alumni having knowing that you know what we want the best for you and that we all want the best for each other there’s no other better feeling speaking of alumni and network you talk to anyone who attends the University of Michigan and pretty much 99.99% of them are died in the wool Maze and blue they describe it as just a different feeling kind of a different experience to be a Michigan grad could you tell me Adam a little bit about the engagement with alums with those who have that degree from Michigan and how important that is to those who are at the University and looking for their next step as well yeah it’s a very I mean the the Michigan Network in the Michigan the power of Michigan is definitely not lost upon us I feel like when we first there’s no way you could have anticipated when we F when I first arrived to campus just how powerful it is um but you see it everywhere right like you see the Michigan logo like it doesn’t matter where you are in the world if you wear a Michigan hat somebody will say go Blue to you somebody will uh make a comment whether it’s good or bad sometimes you get both um fair but as far as the it’s a small group of Michigan sport management Alum it’s even a smaller um group of Michigan sport business conference Alum so like mivia said there’s been 13 conferences including this one a few weeks ago um and so there’s 13 years of planning team members who you know many of them stick around either as our alumni committee who each of us have alumni committee mentors who we have the entire year that helped the shadow us and you know some of them did the very jobs that we were doing like for example my mentor was somebody who had been vice president of Partnerships a few years back now he’s in the workforce now he’s going to help out out with that type of stuff so you can help in terms of career advice you can also help in terms of you’re having a problem with VP Partnerships like I can answer that question so there’s really 13 years of knowledge and expertise that we can tap into um on like a personal level too right like every time the conference comes around a lot of those alums come back it’s like a you know like a get together again so you know they love to come back I know Olivia is graduating next year she better come back next year for sure and I know a lot of people will continue to do that just cuz there’s a there’s a real big like family atmosphere to it right there’s you know there’s only 13 people who have or there’s two co-presents so 26 people who have been co-presidents of the of the conference right so that’s like that’s a little fraternity of itself there’s only so many people that were on the partnership team that’s a little fraternity of itself so um I mean it’s a real family atmosphere and it just helps give some sort of guidance to a really big murky school which obviously is great sport management is even smaller and when you get down the msbc alumni those are the people that really are going to help and take care of you and um you know pass down what they had when they when they were in school the alumni helped them right so now that they’re alumni they want to help us and it’s just a really great feeling and a really great way to get your foot in the door in the industry and so much more goes into the conference than just listening to the speakers and engaging I know there are workshops there are panels tell us a little bit about what happens at the conference outside of just listening to alums and the speakers that come in yes so like you said there’s so much more that goes on than just the Keynotes and the panels for example this was one of my favorite one of our ongoing themes for the conference this year is what’s your legacy how do you want to leave your impact impact as you enter kind of the real world so we partnered up with werman who came in and they led a breakfast panel where um Lindsay leanett she came in and she talked about kind of everything that matters on a personal note and how you can carry that into your real life within the real world so once again adding that like foundational skills into being a good person and stick staying true to who you are and how to guide use that as your guiding princip as you enter the real world so it’s not just business it’s not just Sports it’s it’s everything and so that panel was incredible do you have a favorite I my favorite panel I think was the private Equity panel which is obviously developing very fast I was also going to say um aside from like General programming students and Industry professionals are also paired up in what we call structured networking so there’s a morning keynot when you get there and then um students go are assigned to a room industry professionals are assigned to a room and then we had 750 students or so at the conference and about 400 industry profession so they’re like small group basis and then you know as a freshman I came to the conference not on the planning team just as like you know somebody who wanted to work in sports and I was paed up with really cool um alumni or industry professionals and so every student that comes is assigned to a room and then they have the opportunity to sit down kind of like we are right now just in small groups and say what do you do like you know have the opportunity to ask some questions um and then lay the groundwork you know if they want to reach back out after um it’s just a way to make genuine connections with obviously very budding young students who are waking up on a Friday Friday morning who are willing to spend the whole day in the school of K School of kinesiology at Michigan and then also industry professionals that have come from across the country you know with the with the with the goal of helping Michigan students right so it’s it’s kind of like a really great way for students to make a connections regardless of whether on the planning team regardless of whether they’re in the sport management major we have students come from all over the the country even had some come from International from the London School of Economics this year so it’s just a great way to to make genuine connections with people who want to help really cool thir years and counting Adam will be back next year and apparently now you have to come back because that’s as well yes want to or not Olivia Adam thank you so much for all the information best of luck in the future thank you so much sketch caught up on what went down Tuesday night in the world the Big 10 women’s Hoops Ohio State making easy work of Grand Valley State Buckey’s ranked number 11 in the country combo of Cody McMan Taylor Theory just a little bit too much as the Buckey Cruise Purdue goes on the road in the non to Miami Ohio this game was tight into the fourth quarter before the boilers pulled away for a road win in the noncon 6751 no issues at all for Oregon a ground Air Force 9836 the deja Kelly show continues for the Ducks as they add another win to their resume and a terrific game in the Jumpman Invitational from Charlotte but Michigan comes up just short as the number 20 team in the country Falls to Oklahoma 7262 sooner pulled away in the second half few more minutes Rick piso with Rael Davis same two teams on the men’s side coming up on Wednesday night and just like the Michigan women the Michigan men face a tough test against Oklahoma Jeremy fierce’s younger brother Jeremiah plays for the Sooners one of the best freshman in the country this is an Oklahoma team that’s up to number 14 in the nation a team that really hasn’t shown any weaknesses how can Michigan get this one done in Charlotte well first they got to take care of the basketball you look at Oklahoma you got to understand that Oklahoma is one of the better teams in the country at forcing turnovers on the defensive end and that’s been Michigan’s worry this whole season taking care of the basketball and then defensively I’m curious to see what Dusty May does with Jaylen Moore jayen Moore at that fourth position for Oklahoma is an absolute bucket I’m going to be curious to see if Danny wolf can move his feet on the perimeter keep that ball in front because I think this will show if this two big lineup will work through the rest of the Big 10 and then Jeremiah fear like you said kid is just a bucket 17 and5 on the season he is Big Time freshman yeah this would be a really important game for Michigan such a nice start before the holiday break if you could pick up a huge non-con win like this you’re already unbeaten at 2-0 an early Big 10 play what a great start for Dusty may as you get back into the meat of big 10 play want to touch on two other games you’ll see USC and SE Sun that’s the school he used to know as Cal State Northridge coming up tonight on Big 10 Network what should we be watching for with USC because it’s a roster that even Eric musan is still trying to get to know I think we’re starting to see those guys coming to form and starting to learn each other you look at Desmond claw coming in from Xavier last season didn’t get it going this season yet but the last three games he’s been outstanding averaging over 20 points a game getting to the free throw line nine times a contest he told me at media day he wants to be a all big 10 caliber player St Thomas the same and St Thomas has been really good the last two games averaging over 18- six I think when you get Desmond Claud and St Thomas on the same page that’s where it starts for USC and then on the defensive end when they play that big conkle lineup with all those four men they just got to move their feet one thought on Washington Washington State 300th alltime meeting for these teams I think Danny sprinkle still trying to figure out what his team is capable of when they re-enter Big 10 play and if they want to be capable of winning a lot of games they need great o support to be great in that game against USC only nine points three rebounds he is too talented to only go three rebounds in the Big 10 game they need him to big time to get their whole team going at the same time can’t leave him on the floor for 32 33 minutes we see him struggling trying to keep that breath going and he’ll be a key for Washington not just tonight but throughout the course of the year for Rael Davis I’m Rick piso thanks for the hang on Big 10 today
