juo to the Mets it’s real $765 million Mark D Roa how do you wrap your brain around he just changed the game for every player that will come after him will to Aspire to be him last year Tom I thought sh he Otani was an outlier cuz he could do both he just got $65 more million to hit it’s amazing we were all blown away by the Otani contract and speaking of Blown Away that’s what Juan sto has just done only a year later to that staggering number that Otani put up you see that 765 $51 million a year with no deferrals I mean listen we said going into this all along we thought that Steve Cohen had a number that was going to be Beyond anybody else the owner of the New York Mets and he proved that I I truly believe that he was not going to leave without getting Juan sto no matter where this went there are escalators that could get this over $800 million reportedly Tom how did we get here what were all the factors that were in play to have this number get so dramatically higher than what we originally expected for woto well you have to start with his talent this is a generational Talent the best pure hitter I believe in this generation right now in terms of just getting on base working at bats predictable player who’s putting up numbers year after year after year age only 26 years old next season front officers love the fact that he’s just entering his prime so you’re paying him not just on what he’s done which is on the Hall of Fame highway but what he will do and finally above all else it’s the bidding war that happened between the Yankees and the Mets I know there were other teams involved Dodgers Blue Jays Red Sox this came down to Yankees and Mets like we have never seen before Yankees and Mets bidding on a player who played in the 2024 season in New York with the Yankees and guys think about where the Mets were in May of 2024 11 games under 500 I want to get this in real quick mark Feinstein getting details on the Yankees final offer 16 years 760 million um you see Florida 47.5 million aav the Mets offer was $51 Million aav the Red Sox according to Chris catillo bid for soda was 15 years $700 million come on that’s not getting it done I’m kidding I mean that’s unbel well you’re right though I mean these teams went beyond their normal comfort zone but Steve Cohen was not going to lose this bidding I think he proved that and those teams have nothing to be ashamed about oh no they were just in it against a guy who’s not going to lose and I was about to say gregy think about where the Mets were 11 games under jge Lopez throws his glove in the stands the Mets season is going down the drain early they not only rescued the season but they got into the postseason made a nice run and I think this made the Mets more attractive to WAN stto and it made it easier for Steve Cohen to start to consolidate this team with further Investments 26 years old top of his game only getting better anyone who watched on a nightly basis watched him out of 600 PL some OD plate appearances control 598 of them mindblowing and and I and I agree with you it’s right man right time bidding war power players in the game the Red Sox getting involved the Yankees wanting to keep them but at the end of the day you knew Steve Cohen was in a position with where the Mets were at and where he is finding financially that it would be foolish for Scott Boris and Juan stto not to entertain the fact of going back to him and seeing where it’s at congratulations to wodo congratulations to every big leager that’s going to sign after him cuz the price of Poker just went up once a player always a player this is landscape changing for our entire Sport and man hats off to WAN sto I’m I’m buying a plane tonight a third island like he could dream and crazy dream that’s where we’re going if I’m a Met fan right now this might be the greatest night ever I know we won the World Series I totally get that but this you were always the little brother in New York I don’t care what anyone says it was the Yankees and then the Mets this is such an emotional night for Met fans I’m I didn’t grow up a Met fan know so many of them they took Scotty Pippen away away from Michael Jordan he’s our Michael Jordan now I know you think you need him for Michael to win all these championships we’re taking him away well we’re going to pay him more than you pay Michael Jordan well that’s that’s what we can do now yeah and listen I’m old enough to remember when New York was a b a national league town with the Mets in the 80s but so is Steve Cohen he remembers those days and he’s trying to get the Mets back to that level and and I do think that they they’re very close to doing that and it was easy to convince I think besides the money to woto that this team is not done yeah exactly it’s a really good team right now they’re by no means a finished product there’s going to be more Investments especially into the rotation for me now that you’ve got woto at this number you got to back it up and it’s a historic night for wotto no question about it but you see the Red Sox the monies there the Yankees the monies there obviously there was other teams the Blue Jays Dodgers in the mix what’s the pivot now for those clubs oo and when do you start the pivot immediately right immediately I I we said this earlier the Yankees had a plan B in place before this decision was made every team has to do their due diligence I think they’re going to move very quickly there’s no question I think the market is really going to fly here in Dallas the next few days but let’s remember one thing jua bet hun himself several times the Washington Nationals if you want to go back a few years put hundreds of million dollars on the table no thanks he goes to San Diego then he goes to the Yankees the Yankees wanted to extend him no thanks and look where he sits today a guy who bet on himself in a incred one of the best platform Seasons you will ever see you talking about a clutch player that was a clutch year by a clutch player man if he hits like Aaron judge in October is he agreeing to a 765 million dollar contract as you see turned down 15 years 440 million from the Nationals in 2022 and he was criticized for it criticized I think the biggest thing in what Tom kind of keeps echoing is the fact that we’ve seen one of I’ve talked to Hall of Fame players I was just I was just in Cabo with Chipper Jones and if I asked him who’s the best hitter in the game he’ll sit there and tell you Juan stto the way he controls the at bat and he’s 20 6 years old we haven’t even seen the best version of him the new reality of baseball is the Mets will get whoever they want or at least have the highest bid their owner is going to do whatever he wants in this game and as a fan I love it and let’s not forget what happened two trade deadlines ago the Mets when they moved Verlander they moved scherers before David Sterns came in they restocked that farm system so now the Mets with this big spending for S it’s not only great because of the player but because this young group of Mets prospects will grow and mature with him and Lindor and nmo now Leading The Way of this team going forward it’s it’s going to be a fascinating time to follow baseball John Haymon Mark B joining me now live on MLB tonight from Dallas what a way to kick off the winter meetings by the way uh real quick details again no deferred money we already talked about that um opt outs are there any yes one opt out after year five 2029 fascinating we don’t know the breakdown yet so I don’t know what the fiveyear salary total is but it’s a lot of money 51 million aav your thoughts on the deals for woto well obviously it’s a lot of money and Steve con uh gets what he wants and what he wants for the team he’s going to get it and this is why they were favored from the beginning even though Juan sto’s with a World Series team he’s with the Yankees you know they’re going to be big they have the biggest Revenue in baseball but I mean Steve Co was just determined just like he does in the art world right he paid $155 million for a piece of art that Steve wi put his elbow through and it’s now up in value even after the elbow went through so I mean this guy will make sure to get what he wants now I do believe the Mets were pessimistic at different points during this and there were a few times where they had the same bid as the Yankees they stepped forward today and improved it they were at 720 million now 765 million I mean this deal is enormous for one Soo biggest deal in sports history easily are we connecting this deal in any way to David Sterns I was thinking about this David Sterns in his seven full seasons running the Brewers spent just over $800 million in total payroll the entire time entire time the largest free agent deal he had ever signed as the president of baseball operations or GM was Lorenzo Kane 5 years $80 million he gave out a $75 million signing bonus tonight so if you’re David cerns right now you m your head must be spinning with the numbers that we’re talking about after the history that he had in Milwaukee but when you have an owner like Steve Cohen who is going to get what he wants and is going to pay what he wants to get the guy he wants it must be really nice to be David CERN and be able to hand out that check and also to know it’s not like that is going to prohibit the Mets from doing something else like this isn’t going to be the Met’s last move of the off season you guys have covered New York City Baseball your entire career did you ever think there would be a day like this where the Yankees wanted to keep a guy a superstar and they couldn’t hang with the Mets money it is it it is stunning uh you know I’ve been around around for quite a long time and I can remember a month ago Yankee executiv telling me I don’t see him going to the Mets it would be a buzz kill to leave the Yankees the Marquee franchise perhaps in all of sports certainly in baseball to go 8 and a half miles to Queens and the Mets and uh I mean Steve con did it and I mean he didn’t really pay much more than the Yankees right I mean that’s a little bit shocking too that the Yankees were in there for 760 million over 16 years now it is one more year but I mean what’s that you know I mean they they tried hard I mean nobody can criticize H Stein Brer he put in a big effort he was just outdone by Steve col and they knew I mean they favored him coming into baseball but they knew this day was coming I give the Yankees credit for being being in in favor of of of having Steve Co join the Mets and and replace the will ponds they knew this day was coming and it’s a rough day for the Yankees I mean they’re going to Pivot and get some great players but none of them are one Soo well John I think the the 15 years versus 16 years is Big cuz if he doesn’t opt out who knows what he’s going to get at age 41 right when it goes back in the free agent Market I’m kidding uh I I think under under prior Mets ownership you never would have seen this coming under Steve Cohen it’s it’s certainly in play and now we’ve seen it happen I personally think it would have been a bigger uh more of a sting to the Yankees and their fan base if he had gone to the Red Sox or if he had gone to the Blue Jays and had to compete with him in the same division oh really I don’t way I think they’re going to be happy to see him on the back page but no way I mean the Red Sox the Red Sox I think would have been worse I really do maybe the Red Sox the Optics of owning New York City but here’s the thing right Steve Cohen owns New York City baseball if you get out bid by an owner worth at upwards of20 billion you have to just shrug your shoulders and say okay so if the Yankees had said okay we’ll give you 15 for 65 Steve Cohen may have turned around and said all right fine 15 for 800 right I mean I don’t know that he was going to get out bid here and if you lose the guy to the guy worth1 1820 billion do you say look he wasn’t getting out bid if they had lost him to the Red Sox I think the Optics would have been he out bid for Aaron judge reportedly the the Giants offered more money for Aaron judge and I think there are Yankee fans sitting here going wait a minute you passed up the Allure of being in the Pinstripes and playing next to your friend Aaron judge and it worked out we went all these championships you that didn’t give us the that didn’t give us the edge he’s this is a different guy he’s going to go play with his friend Francisco Lindor now and he’s very familiar with the Metson City Field played the National League East for a long time Aaron judge was a lifelong Yankee he was a guy who once he resigned he knew they were going to name him Captain he’s the face of the franchise there maybe woto wants to be the guy and on the Yankees with Aaron judge he wasn’t going to be the guy but I think it came down to the money and honestly we can sit here and say 760 765 15 years 16 years 51 million a year it’s 2 and A2 million more 3 and a half million more than 47.5 million a year and that’s what he ended up doing right after that game five debacle uh stto stood up and said in fact whoever wants me most and apparently the Mets wanted him most that was a key factor and the winning it’s hard you know it’s hard to gauge over 15 years who’s going to be better the Mets farm system isn’t bad obviously Vientos is on the come uh you know the catcher Alvarez is a very talented guy Lindor second in MVP so I mean in terms of the team they actually did better against the Dodgers than the Yankees did so you could make the case that the Mets are right there with the Yankees and the money really just played it and I mean he’s a typical it’s a typical free agent nothing against him Otani was an unusual case where it was about the geography in this case it was not about the geography obviously and it was more typical of free agency where he goes to the biggest bidder
