[Music] what is going on everybody another edition of closers I am in the host seat today because Mr arsma is a bit under the weather David how are you buddy how you feeling not so great but uh still good enough to do the show obviously want to talk baseball with you all I love it um but yeah man massive headache chess not feeling good the worst is my my son JD is feeling it as well a little bit um so yeah man I’m excited though that you’re hosting you’re taking it over you get the the energy today so go for it yeah I’m not too worried about it plus you have your trip to Mexico later on today for the holidays so you’ve got some interesting things going on perfect time to be sick right like right as you’re going to go to Mexico for for eight days go get sick right before the trip I am feeling a little better right now but that might be due to a whole lot matter of sudden so we’ll see well that’s because you got to see me and the producer fighting and that always makes you happy oh so much fun oh God that felt so good the headache just went away when you guys started yelling at each other immediately immediately well speaking of sick I want to start off with the team that was probably making me the most sick this offseason and that was the Baltimore or hols they finally signed somebody and it’s an interesting signing they decided to go all the way to the J to the Japanese league and they picked up a 35y Old Ace Mr shago what do you know about Mr shano and because I’m not even going to try saying tomoyuki uh what do you know about him David even though you went for it right there um what I know about it is he’s an absolute stud in Japan he’s got basically he’s won their MVP two times he’s won two time uh sa young winner last year absolutely dominated with a one 167 ER 15 and3 record um the crazy thing is how much strikes he throw so he’s 160ish Innings last year 16 walks 111 strikeouts um the thing about him man this guy knows how to win he knows how to pitch he knows how to win um it is always interesting to watching Japanese pitchers come on over for the first time especially at his age which is much more advanced than we we’ve been used to seeing as of late you know when a guy like o Otani or some of these guys come on over now that’s it’s generally a lot younger um so it’s going to be interesting seeing him coming over later and trying to adjust to the five-day rotation how they’re going to deal with that is going to be interesting thing uh we the one thing we do know the orals have been needing another Ace they they lost Corbin Burns that’s a huge loss for them going out there and getting H suguna is awesome is that how is that how we say it suuna I I think it’s chano but I don’t know I I don’t know my Japanese well enough I don’t man my my head’s up anyways anyways this guy does know how to pitch that’s at the end of the day the guy knows how to pitch but and it’s also not this huge risky deal it’s not like they’re going out there signing for a five-year deal and and committing a whole ton of money it’s a oneyear $113 million deal I I love the deal I love the idea of it um and and let him and see if he pitches here you know we’ve been talking about a lot of things and one of them is uh velocity and we’re going to get back to that in a second but chano doesn’t have the Velocity that a lot of pitchers in Major League Baseball have he reminds me a lot of a Greg matics type where he’s going to go in and out he’s going to paint those Corners at least from what we’ve seen in the jaes League do you think a guy like that at this age can do what Greg Maddox did later in his career where he’s just GNA you know go out there give you five six Innings keep that that pitch count low and for a guy who the the hitters have never seen him so he might be able to surprise some guys especially in the first half of the season I mean it’s not like he’s crazy low from some of these guys now he’s still he’s still low 90s you know as long as he can pitch he’s he does throw a ton of strikes moves the ball around a lot obviously you saw some of those videos his split is pretty sick um what he has so as long as he can keep the ball in the zone then out of the Zone enough when he needs to um you still you still have to respect the fact that this guy’s gone out and has over almost 1600 strikeouts in Japan um over 12 Seasons he does know how to put the ball um over over the plate and then punch tickets and so it’s one of those things like you have to sit there and still respect that fact no matter what that this guy can get out um and again it’s a perfect job of the contract it’s not too big of a contract um it doesn’t put them the Orioles in a bad situation and it puts them in a position to where even if if he’s starting to dominate to maybe even extend him add another year to that do doing something like this and if it doesn’t work all you’re out is $13 million with a team that can spend a lot of money you mentioned Corbin Burns being gone now he hasn’t signed with anybody else but are you a little worried that a guy like Corbin Burns who is an absolute Ace there’s not more um more of a need from the Orioles to go out and resign him I find that very interesting I also find the fact that the Mets who also need a starting pitcher haven’t been connected with him at all despite the fact that his former GM David Sterns is now the GM of the Mets does that give you a a couple of red flags I don’t think any red flags at all I I just think it’s a matter of money and that he’s going to want a ace type of money and he’s going to get Ace type of money not being connected with teams isn’t necessarily the worst thing in the world like going out there and being a little quiet about it being being below the radar isn’t always a bad thing and I guarantee you there have been phone calls with Sterns and his GM and his agent and going out having some conversations I don’t think teams are scared of Corbin Burns I don’t think they’re scared of the money it’s it’s just a matter of can they afford it or not I don’t think he’s going to go out there and get crazy crazy money but he’s going to get really good money and I don’t I I think the Mets would be a great place for him I think any team would would love to have Corbin Burns this guy is an absolute Ace amongst aces in the league right now um but I think this signs this signing for the Orioles does kind of put that Corbin Burns now question to rest a little bit because now you’re looking at you have Zack effn Grayson Rodriguez Dean Kramer um how do you sug Sugo if you say so yeah and Trevor Rogers so they’re in a position now to where they have a good really solid fiveman rotation so now the Orioles from this from their standpoint needs to get a bullpen guy and and someone in right field maybe another guy in that lineup to to finish off that team so they’re in a great position so this basically eliminates roals from from pursuing Corbin Burns now Corbin Burns that’s basically one more team off the list and um looking around for a job so you yeah the Yankees off the list Orioles off the list and now we’re trying to figure out where Corbin Burns is goingon to end up and and it looks like the Mets should be the ones just knocking on that door I don’t think it’s going to be the Mets I happen to think that the San Francisco Giants are going to be the one that ends up Landing him uh they still want to make some moves and it doesn’t seem like the Mets have any interest and I don’t know why but there there’s really no need for the Mets to go over the top and get get a pitcher uh they have the pitcher Whisperer your old teammate Jeremy Hefner I find that very intriguing and there was news this week that Sasaki the Japanese pitcher everybody wants he’s leaning towards the Mets because of Jeremy Hefner uh what do you think about that that’s interesting that’s really interesting that that’s a that’s a speaks volumes to Jeremy Hefner and what he’s done there and the type of reputation he has built amongst the league he he he took a a team last year and re restarted a couple guys careers um to the fact where now we’re seeing with um Sorano or Sorano going out no oh my God Sano signing with the Orioles who’s signed with the or no Oakland it’s not Oakland anymore saino yes I’m messing but saino going out signing the largest deal in A’s history right so so we’re looking at him basically Reinventing careers restarting careers hell yeah that would that would get me really interested if I can pick any single team out there I’m going be looking at situations like that and say okay that’s that’s a perfect type of situation where it’s it’s a great pitching coach it’s obviously he’s has been able to connect with pitchers and get them going better um I still just don’t see in any possible way how the Dodgers are not the Front Runners well it’s the it’s still going to be the Dodgers it’s still going to be the San Diego Padres and now the Mets and the Yankees actually have a meeting set up with them too so this is going to come down to the wire it’s going to be really interesting I don’t think the money is going to be the biggest thing because like we said many times uh it’s just about how much International signing money teams have but they can maneuver and make more uh while we’re on the topic of pitching though there was an interesting article that came out yesterday about velocity and injuries and I know this is something that we’ve talked about on this show plenty of times but now that there’s been a study can you tell us a little bit more about it and uh what you thought yes Major League Baseball actually did a study like finally getting involved with the game and trying to uh figure out some of our issues with Major League Baseball so they did a study looking at um basically arm injuries and what is causing this rise in arm injuries even if it was a Rise um and they came to a couple big conclusions one is chasing velocity two is stuff chasing stuff so constantly basically trying to make the better slider um you know better curveball better you know best best fast ball you know spin rate all that stuff um they do mention some other things they did bring up weighted balls a little bit they brought up training and training techniques um and they also brought up in some workload management stuff but also the big one was going out there every single pitch and trying to throw with everything you have every single pitch there’s a couple issues I had with the study the the things I don’t like about it it sounded like um they they interviewed a whole lot of like trainers and pitching coaches and pcture whole interviewed a bunch of people it sounded like a whole lot of well we need these guys to stop throwing so hard is the answer and then and it kind of points a lot of fingers and doesn’t actually come up with Solutions and I guess the only solution they had was Rob manfred’s idea of making these guys pitch six Innings whatever like re rebr bringing out how how important starting pitcher is but it’s like you need to stop doing like power lifting you need to start stop like start longdistance running again stop lifting so hard um stop pitching so hard stop trying to throw really good sliders that’s wonderful great and Grand but like James you tell me like it’s if if their number one thing is chasing velocity and chasing stuff do you really think in any possible way the radar gun’s going to go anywhere in the game like the radar gun the the pitch devices in the stadiums where they’re showing spin rate vertical movement horizontal movement on every single pitch I I was in the front office and this is what I do for a living every pitch these guys are throw is evaluated based on their stuff every single pitch and that’s the biggest problem is is every pitch in the big leagues is evaluated on your stuff so now every minor leager knows like to get to the big leagues you’re evaluated on your stuff and then every amateur player knows to get to the minor league to get drafted you’re Valu ated on your stuff and how hard you throw it and it constantly goes down this line unless we’re going to magically like Snap our fingers and get rid of the radar gun get rid of rid of these pitching devices nothing’s going to change adding one more inning to these guys workload isn’t going to make them train any different or or stop trying to throw hard it’s just they’re going to try to throw harder for one more inning and then get hurt even more so so you have to do two things if you want me to change if you want to change all this completely get rid of radar guns but the biggest problem with that we know hitting hitting and their average and home runs and everything goes down when you throw harder the harder you throw the harder it is to hit and that will never change we definitely need more floater scuffy McGee pitches in the game that will eliminate gun um but you know we’ve talked about this plenty times a guy like Greg Maddox he would have never made it to the show not true that is absolute crap gr Maddox that we think of at the end of his career might not have made it in the show would have continued his career when he came up he was a 94 95 M hour pitcher that’s the thing we forget like he was a hard throwing pitcher when he came up to the big leagues and then learned how to move the ball and then adjust his his how he threw to that we always think of this guy as like the perfect command and control guy at 90 miles an hour dude he was a he was a he pumped fast Balls by guys early on his career you know who would be really interesting to discuss this topic with John Smoltz we should get him on the show soon I would love to because I know he’s passionate about it and a little behind the scenes uh I have spoken to JN Smoltz he has agreed to come on in the near future we are looking forward to it I I don’t know about you I love JN Smoltz despite the fact that I’m a Mets fan and he dominating us so many times I thought that guy because of his combination of his Poise his control his velocity the fact that he can close games open games I thought he was the ultimate pitcher yes I he was able to do everything reinvent himself and he especially dude he was just a stud I just I loved watching him and an absolute stud of a human being and one hell of a golfer I I heard an interview with him a couple of years ago he was saying that oh I didn’t have a really good golf season this year I didn’t have any scores less better than minus six six I haven’t had a minus six in all the rounds I’ve ever had combined minus six good no no chance ever yeah that that that guy’s just an absolute Beast uh let’s move over to the New York Yankees while we’re in the AL East uh they made a couple of very interesting moves let’s start with their new first baseman slash outfielder slash whatever the hell you want to do it Cody Bellinger I love this move I think it’s great I think it’s um I like it for the Yankees as long as you’re going to get 26 Cody Bellinger if you’re going to get that 230 Cody Bellinger again that the guy would just big swing and miss and just like crap and and and big situations then oh God he was gonna get run out of town oh yeah but but if he if he’s that guy that hits 260 and then and Pops off 25 30 home runs again I still man I it just it blows my mind that the do the me the sorry the Cubs didn’t trade him two years ago at the trade deadline that like it still blows my mind that was such a huge opportunity loss for them they ended up signing him back to this big deal and now they’re trading him and and it just it it absolutely blows on mind they didn’t they didn’t do a better deal with him but this is a is good deal for the um the Yankees they are Shoring up some of their positions like he said he will play any Outfield position he’ll play first base um but that’s which is great and it’s just a matter of what Cody beler are you getting right and the problem that I have with this signing or or this trade rather is he’s not the WAN stto substitute let’s not pretend that he is you know what he is though he’s gonna put up similar numbers to glaber Torres so you lost glaver Torres now you’re gonna make that up with uh with Bellinger maybe a little more yeah maybe I mean to me I think it’s a it’s straight Money Ball it’s in the aggregate like right you don’t need to you don’t need to find um Juan sto you just need to create a team that builds that is better and and More in war than Juan sto disappearing right so now you’re you’re looking at this team and the the things that they’ve done you you bring in Cody Bellinger you bring in Max freed you bring in Devin Williams who which we’re going to talk about but you bring these guys in they are 1.6 War away from where they were last year so you still need a first baseman and a third baseman so now you bring Bellinger and that’s only if Bellinger is his average Bellinger um and there and your your war is closer like it’s extremely close to what it was so now if they go out there and make one big splash maybe a third base or first base you’re a better team than you were last year I’m still not so sure about that but I love the move that um that Brian Cashman made last week and we talked about when they signed freed was that the guy that they really needed they had enough starting pitching well the good news is once they signed free they said okay we have an extra pitcher let’s trade him and they ended up picking up Devin Williams that boy is an absolute stud I don’t care about the home run that he gave up to Alonzo in the playoffs that guy I wish I had him on my team he is one of those pitchers he’s probably a top five closer in all of baseball David you are our closer tell me about Devin Williams what do you see what are the Yankees getting Yankees finally got a Bonafide closer again now Luke Weaver has been wonderful he’s been around for a long time and he filled that rooll very very well I would not put my money back on Luke Weaver and expect him to be able to do what he did because now it’s great but he’s got seven years and he finally figured out how to really dominate wonderful go throw the eighth now we have a Bonafide closer again Devon Williams is is an absolute stud knows how to pitch in big games yes he gave up a bad game to the Mets in the playoffs big freaking deal big deal this this guy had a onew erra and that was even coming off of injuries some back issues last year this guy has been an absolute stud knows how to pitch in these huge games big situations a lot of people kind of blow off the the Brewers as like not this big team but at the end of the day they have been a big team for a while and and playing a meaningful games forever so he is an absolute stud and it’s a perfect move for them I think they can still make one more Bullpen move that doesn’t need to be a big move uh but one more Bullpen move and like I said you bring in a first baseman or a third baseman and this is a better team than they were last year I think hands down a better team than they were last year I just hope Cashman realizes what it’s going to take to resign Devin Williams after the season if he’s able to pitch in New York let’s not how about this this is crazy the Brewers turned down a $10 million option on Williams 10 million that that blows my mind that’s absurd that’s absolutely I I don’t know how they that’s crazy I would sell my soul to have Deon Williams on the Mets can you imagine you had Devin Williams Edwin Diaz to end the game or vice versa closing games Ed Diaz is over he’s done you think he’s done I don’t think he I think Edwin Diaz pitched with so much Swagger and flow and like the situation when you lose that it just he wasn’t the same guy okay well I I’m just saying he was coming off a pretty catastrophic injury where he missed a whole year usually takes guys a little time to get back there um but you’re the pitching Guru not me you tell me oh I’m I know I know I’m going to crazy on the limb like making a hot take here I think he p c certain guys have to just know in their back of the mind they’re better than everybody else and he is that guy when he comes in with the entrance he has the music how he pumps his chest all that stuff he needs to know he’s better than everybody else and the moment you saw it you could see it in his eyes he was not the same pitcher and I maybe he’ll get that back but something has to change to get that back and I he has to come out and just just start blowing doors open early on and and you might see it but if he’s not the closer I don’t know if he’ll ever get it back I could see that um sticking with the Yankees though there was a player that you and I have guessed would be the perfect Yankee fit at third base Nolan Aron he almost got traded to the Astros yesterday but he nicked the deal tell me what you think about that how is that going to affect the Astros how is that going to affect the Yankees is he Yankee bound now that is it interesting that is really interesting that you that you would ni that deal um I I’m so curious on why I’m I’m so curious on why that is a in all honesty outside of the the cheating sandal they are a great organization they’ve built Champion teams and they’ve they’ve proven that they are so much better than what just the cheating scandal is right they’re they are a great team who also cheated cheated um so it blows my mind that he would he would just shoot that down so that that that is a massive shock to me that that would be that easy of a move to not want him to be to to go sorry not want to go there but this does make basically make bregman their only Target and so if I’m bregman’s agent I’m sitting back with a giant smile on my face saying show me the money just show me the money yeah that’s that’s the problem with that is when when you get a noan arado who’s an like you know just one of the best third baseman in baseball history and then you then you sit there pman like the guy basically the only real um Third Base uh free agent that that’s that’s going to like move waves you’ve got Josh roas birdie JD Davis and Mak like when you start getting that list like Yan Maka like okay it’s bregman bregman and no one else yeah well it’s it’s funny this incestuous uh you know seating chart all over the place you know you see Bellinger moving and uh the Cubs bring in Kyle Tucker into that Outfield so just a lot of weird stuff going on over there Houston moves Kyle Tucker over to the Chicago Cubs and uh I tell you a lot of people in New York really wanted Kyle Tucker to go to the Yankees I never saw that as a possibility um and it’s funny and we’re gonna do a little top 10 later people were saying that Kyle Tucker is one of the top 10 players in baseball which is absurd but he’s a damn good player and now he’s a cub what do you think about him and fitting over there in Chicago you’ve played there amongst other places I think he’s he’s an absolute stud again obviously Kyle Tucker is great A lot of people will argue that he is better than SoDo I’ve saw that like people blowing up um him and and SoDo and how his numbers are better I get it but SoDo provides so much more like on the field like just momentum excitement like his numbers are great but he is developing into one of the best players in baseball I wouldn’t say he’s top 10 yet but but if he keeps doing what he is doing the numbers he is putting up I’ve got no reason why he shouldn’t be a top 10 player right so like that that’s the argument for me is is is you just need I just need to see him do it a little bit more and he goes out he he had 290 with 20 23 home runs and I’ve got like he’s on the door to being a top 10 player um I’m a this is an interesting move by Houston because I thought for sure they would try to extend Tucker I thought for sure they would try to sign him just maybe the numbers were just didn’t make sense for Houston and they sat back and said okay let’s bring in some free agents or sorry let’s bring in some trade value and then go back out there and resign try to resign him maybe when he’s a free agent next year um the Cubs are basically renting him for a year and so that’s a that’s an interesting thing you get rid of Bellinger you bring in Tucker I think that’s a net positive but at the same time you still have more holes the Cubs need to fill I I love when moves like this happen then you sit there and go okay the Cubs are players okay the Astros we know they’re players but what’s the next move like you bring in Kyle Tucker getting ready to Bellinger okay you made you made an improvement you step you took a step back you two steps forward I need more Kyle Tucker has the opportunity to make a lot of money in the off season he only played in uh less than 80 games last year but the three years prior to that he average 30 home runs and 100 RBI he is definitely a threat to steal and he’s going to be a free agent at the end of the year if he goes 3030 100 RB hitting 280 this year he’s going to make a lot of cash he should make a ton of money because because again he he’s a sudden he’s on track to be a great baseball player he’s obviously already a great baseball player but like he’s already he’s on track to being a top 10 type of talent I just need to see it for another like another season just he’s right there like right there if not top 15 type of talent so that that’s that’s the thing that’s the thing for me like I would have no problem like taking him on my team right now like everybody would want him on their team right now the Yankees would be dying for him to be on their team right now it’s just want to be a top 10 I I just need a little more or or just keep doing it it’s so funny because now with the Otani and stto contract I really don’t have any idea what you would give a guy like Kyle Tucker in the off season it’s okay let’s say those 3030 100 RBI hitting 290 what are you giving this guy he’s 27 years old you’re not going to give him you know Wan stto money is he gonna get 400 million no right I mean the dude the dude was one home run away from being a 3030 guy in 23 one home Runway 30 stolen bases he had 29 home runs 112 RBIs for anybody that still cares about RBI which I do I do I have no idea with numbers contracts like you’re just blowing out like what these contracts are worth because the the thing about him right he’s going he’s going in he’s he’s 28 years old he’ll be 29 that free agent year that’s three years older than where stto is right now but his numbers arguably kind of line up with him now he doesn’t necessarily sell tickets the same way stto does I don’t know what that is maybe it’s a smile maybe it’s a Swagger whatever that is um people want to watch stto but like numbers wise he’s not crazy far off from what stto is doing he’s just three years older well the reason for that is because Juan sto was just so hyped up for so long even when he was young Kyle talker he kind of snuck up on everybody the last few years where he kept improving kept improving kept improving and now you’re like oh wait a minute this guy is a force to be reckoned with as opposed to Juan SoDo where he came out of the gates and he was just an explosive player and it was like okay how much is he gonna get when he goes to free agency I can guess if Kyle Tucker is an if he’s a free agent right now I would give him right now 12 years 450 God dang it was only a couple years ago when we were talking about $500 million being this number that nobody if it’s even reachable and now it’s we just Bown through that yeah there’s nobody in baseball who makes 500 million or 600 million it’s 400 million and then 700 million which is absurd yeah good for them good for them it’s showing you that there’s a lot more money in baseball than you know oh yeah absolutely and unlike the NBA these guys actually play right every day Kyle Tucker every day all right so like I said at the beginning of our little chat about Kyle Tucker a lot of people were saying Kyle Tucker is already a top 10 player in Major League Baseball I don’t agree with that I know you don’t agree with that so what we did is I asked you David if everybody was a free agent right now who would be your top 10 players so let’s start right now with number 10 number 10 uh my boy Vladimir Guerrero Jr um Toronto Blue Jays I got to watch this kid grow up uh when I was there absolutely absolute St this guy is amazing can do everything except for run fast and stay off the uh stay off the the dining table um it’s a the the the thing about him that’s not that that’s stopping him from being a top five guy is the consistency every year year in year out like he’s had a couple in phenomenal years last year was another phenomenal year but then it’s a matter of like consistency like he he struggled at the beginning of the Season absolutely dominated at the end of the season but then the last couple years were like so kind of ho hum then it’s a matter of then like two couple years ago it’s 21 had an incredible year led the league in almost everything number two in MVP so he is right there he is top 10 this guy is going to get I I don’t know James what are you the 600 no I don’t think he’ll get there but he’ll be in the 500s if I had to guess depending on his season this year this is a big season for him and I don’t think there’s any chance that the Bluejays are going to trade for him trade him away no I don’t think so I I don’t think you can okay let’s move on to your number nine player he’s the only pitcher on this list TK scoble um obviously this year’s saai young winner uh number seven in MVP had just a phenomenal year led the league in the r led the league in 18 wins LED all the pitching and War what could this guy not do um except for get hit apparently so he he’s 100 mile hour bitcher he just he he just throws absolute gas from the leftand side and I I love it there’s there’s nothing more powerful than when your manager going in the playoffs basically says your uh rotation ter scoble and then throw against the wall and see what sticks and that’s amazing that’s when you show how good you are and what you mean to a team in an organization and I believe that in a seven game series if they the Tigers faced the Yankees I believe that scubba would have came out went two and 0 and the Tigers would have beaten the Yankees and went to the World Series if they had that opportunity but this guy is an absolute Stud I’m happy watching him pitch and I cannot wait to see him improve yet again this year go to your number eight Mr arsma guy don’t sleep on him Ronald aunia JR this guy is one year removed from being a 4040 man 4070 4070 sorry I apologize 4070 man uh led the league in basically every single stat was the MVP uh he was rookie of the year when he first came up in 2018 it’s it’s like we’ve kind of forgotten about him you know you forget how good he was and how much uh he mattered to that brave team you really saw that offense struggle when he wasn’t himself and then and obviously missed almost the entire year it just it’s a different team different organization when he’s not on the field and that’s how much he matters I do want to see him coming back coming back being healthy come back and make a difference but this guy is when he’s on and when he’s healthy he is a top three player if not top two player and so I that’s where I’m at with him he’s an Absol stad and the best contract in all of baseball for the team it is the worst contract for the player but for the team aunia is so underappreciated and underpaid it’s absolutely ridiculous you’re 100% right do not sleep on this guy if you look over my shoulder you will see a few baseball cards and I definitely have aunia rookie cards along with my SoDo and my Otani that’s how good he is he’s making 17 million Jesus yeah let’s move on to number seven the most underrated player in all of baseball J Ram Jose Ramirez um I don’t think people know if you don’t if you’re not watching these guys every single day yeah you’re you’re completely underappreciate how incredible he is how he changes baseball games where he goes the Guardians go again he was one home run away from being a 4040 guy this year and they canceled the last game of the season um but he’s also the type of player that that wasn’t even mad about it wasn’t upset said hey I’m here for the team this team keeps get is is is good every single year and he’s right in the middle of it I met him when he when I was younger uh sorry when he was younger I was younger too but I was incredibly impressed by him I was uh frustrated as hell having to pitch to him and having to watch him on the bases and I realized really quick this guy’s gonna be a superstar you said in the previous episode where J Ram came in as a young guy he had his you know his chest puffed out he looked like he had two suitcases under his arm and you’re like who the hell is this guy and then once you start pitching to him you’re like yeah keep that chest puffed Out Boy you got it yeah you got it that that’s the thing about it like you walk saw him walk around the lock room like this kid come on dude this is so frustrating you better be able to back this up then you watch him you pitch to him and you’re like okay then you see him on the bases you’re like he is trouble he’s goingon to wreak some havoc and he has from the moment he got into the league he wrecked Havoc all right let’s go to number six the highest paid player in all of baseball is not even in the top five David explain your pick here with Juan sto at six Juan sto the the really the reason I don’t have him Above This is that while he is yes the highest paid player in baseball one of the most impactful players in baseball I still think from a pure number side there are players that that just are better I do think though wherever he goes he adds so many different Dynamic type of things right his ability to get on base his ability ability to mess with pitching on like when he is on base like don’t don’t sleep on don’t sleep on him while he’s not going to steal a lot he will steal when he needs to um he’s just all the time you see him in the big situation and coming through I do think there are the guys that that throw up some a little bit better numbers but um I this is one of those players that you don’t want to see coming up to the play and that’s the biggest thing I think that’s one of those things that they’re paying for is just the fact that you don’t like he messes up the pitching when he comes up to the point it’s funny I was talking to somebody about stto last night and I was asking them uh what they thought of the contract a former major league baseball player and he told me oh he’ll be gone from New York in five years I’m like oh you think he’ll do that well that he’ll op down he’s like nah he’s just gonna eat himself out of the league oh I don’t know that about him I don’t know that about him I’ve seen that happen and I hope it doesn’t happen with Juan stto um but I I think if he played a more um better a better position with the type of stuff that he does if he played played shortstop or center field I’d have him higher on the list but I think that that’s the that’s the big thing about him he is a very mediocre outfielder very mediocre at best and um on the bases he’s he’s good he’ll he’ll mess you up a little bit but it’s not on another level it’s not like auna on the bases so that’s that’s my big knock on him is again if you can have a knock on stto all right let’s move into your top five and you mentioned it importance of the position and here’s young Mr gunar Henderson the short stop for the Baltimore Orioles gunar Henderson three years younger than Juan sto um that did have a little bit to play in it too but this guy has come on the scene so strong and basically doing wano type of things at that age that Wan stto is doing it just hasn’t come through with the World Series ring yet um but they have put the Orioles on the map with all this young Talent he came up uh won the Rookie of the Year in 23 was number four in MVP in one of the toughest MVP races I’ve ever seen this year the dude I is incredible and obviously in one of the most key positions in baseball a 280 hitter almost 900 Ops the guy dropped 37 bombs um kind of does it all and is getting better that’s the crazy thing is like he’s getting better every year and he’s still only been in the league for really only two years yeah I love this guy I think he’s fantastic and I spoke to a friend of mine who’s a big Orioles fan and a broadcaster and I asked him the question that I asked you last week would you trade gunar Henderson straight up for Paul skem knowing that you have all the prospects in the world in Baltimore and he said I would trade anybody and their mother for Paul skin except for gunar gunner cannot go anywhere interesting yeah interesting all right let’s move on to number four the MVP that everybody forgets about because he plays with a guy named Otani let’s go to mukie bets here yes mie bet that’s here that’s the thing about him you can’t forget about this guy it’s easy it’s easy to overlook him now that he plays with Otani he plays with Freddy Freeman plays with basically the entire like All-Star pitching staff um so sometimes he gets overlooked but then you see him step up the plate and and just does what he always does which is come through clutch this guy has always been uh the big guy big situation you kind of you forget how good he is because he’s constantly doing it and the thing too like this guy plays every position right he he’s shortstop right field um second base I mean this guy does every position you could possibly ask and does it at a MVP type of level and that’s that’s the thing is is now he’s getting a little older he’s he is 32 but at the same time like his numbers aren’t really declining it’s he didn’t have the greatest of Seasons this year I know he’s hurt a little bit um was out for a little bit so that’s that’s the only knock on him I have him on right now is that is this the beginning of the decline basically because of some injury stuff but at the same time like don’t don’t overlook this guy like he’s still incredible what I love about Mookie Betts is not only his game but he also has that swag he cares about baseball he hosts that podcast he is exactly what Tom Brady wants to be postc career I believe that Mookie Betts is going to be a huge broadcaster I think everybody’s going to love him postc career he might actually make more money as a broadcaster postc career than he made it during his game oh he’s not going to broadcast he’s going to he’s going to sit there and play uh play bowling I I disagree I think he’s so good that somebody will convince him and he will be one of the greats I really he’s gonna be a world champion bowler okay fair enough all right let’s move on to number three one of my two favorite players in baseball Mr Bobby Wht Jr the guy who has the second best team controlled contract in all of Bas right and when he signed this we’re like wow we’re all like holy crap this guy hasn’t done anything yes and then but and now you’re looking at going wow the Royals got a great deal right it’s still a ton of money um but this dude number two in MVP this year number seven last year Rookie of the Year number four which is crazy that that he was the fourth uh and Rookie of the Year I know his numbers weren’t amazing but you see the progression and see where he has gone over the last two years this this he is absolutely amazing player transformed that organization and obviously doing it short stop position and and just the face of the franchise and easily could be the face of Major League Baseball in a long time if the number if the next two guys weren’t on our list yep and the next guy on our list you know he’s getting a little uh older but Aaron judge number two on your list the second best player according to you you played with him you love him tell me about Aaron judge oh man what what do you say about Aaron judge right going out there having arguably one of the best seasons in Major League Baseball history uh nvp this this last year um 10.8 War I mean the guy 58 home runs after two two years ago he had 62 home runs everything he does it’s incredible it’s it’s almost like though we’re all sitting there waiting for him to to get hurt again or fail but man he he keeps coming through with some of these some of these incredible incredible Seasons it’s just when is he going to take that next step and and really dominate a postseason that’s really it right that’s the only knock that you can ever have on him is when is he gonna dominate a postseason yep and as a baseball fan I’m begging the Yankees please because he’s so Dynamic and because he’s so good move him to first base make sure that he doesn’t get hurt long term I mean you did it with Mickey Mantle if you can move Mickey Mantle you can move Aaron judge move him to first base make sure that you can get the most mileage out of him let him be the the best hitter in baseball for the next five years move him to right uh sorry move him to first base bring in santand there put Bellinger in center and boom you got an incredible team yeah all of a sudden you’re you’re right back where you were and finally if I am the prognosticator prognosticators this is the unicorn of unicorns the goat of goats my favorite player of all time Mr shoh Otani again um I mean God the dude’s three three time envp three-time MVP the um what do you say about Otani this guy went out this year and just was was absolutely incredible 54 home runs 59 stolen bases setting a new new level on that that for those marks 130 RBIs led the league and op slugging Ops Ops plus um total bases like War Led Led the national league in war and so this is absolutely amazing it’s it’s a great argument whether his season was more spectacular or judges I still think maybe his was a little bit more spectacular on the whole total Bas side and the stolen Bas side um did not have a great postseason obviously we know he was a little hurt and just didn’t have that wonderful postseason but it’s crazy he he’s not even pitching yet and and so he did this thing that’s he went out and had one one of the best seasons of all time rehabbing from Tommy John yeah and everybody just didn’t care about that they’re just like oh well every detractor especially here in New York where all the Mets fans wanted Lindor to be the MVP and I can understand why he had a wonderful season they were always saying oh oh he doesn’t play defense he doesn’t play well guess what he didn’t have to and he still had a higher War than Lindor yeah that’s that’s the thing you don’t have to play when you don’t have to play defense and you still affect the team that much and then but he could that’s the thing he could they just don’t need him to yeah and I can’t remember if you said this to me on the air or off the air he’s the world’s first 10 tool player cuz he’s got five tools when he hits and then he’s got another five tools when he pitches yeah that’s the thing we we’ve not even talked about this the world’s first 10 tool player yeah it absolutely insane well David uh I’m gonna cut the show short a little bit this week I know you’re a bit under the weather uh and quite frankly I haven’t
