all right guys what’s going welcome back to everything College fo podcast today me and Nick are doing our predictions for the college football playoffs in full we both have brackets to look at and then the final slide we’ll go ahead and predict our national champion and discuss why you know this is the first time with this 12 team playoff you know it really grew on me at first you know I was like you know four might be too little I think six would be the right amount 12 is way too many and for reasons that occurred this year already where we have three lost teams who still the running for the playoff uh and you know have head coach Lan kein loses three games and runs his mouth on Twitter so this certainly isn’t a perfect system for some I don’t think this is bad though Nick I certainly like this postseason element that we have there’s more games down in college football bu season you know has a little bit more luster added to it you know no opt outs of course for more teams playing and vibing for a national title A lot of people think this will increase the amount of blowouts I mean sure I think it also increase the amount of teams that will go out and compete and put on Great Performances as well even if all the favor end up winning at the end of the day what are your thoughts on this 12 team playoff Nick obviously it’s a pros and cons thing but at the same time I definitely think this is better for CFB more eyes on the sport more competitive football more meaningful football at the end of the day is all we can ask for and no one can complain with that so I’ve been super critical of 12 team playoff I’ve made it you know known that’s it’s not my favorite idea in the world and I think a lot of issues with college football in general are sort of unfolding before our eyes you I thought four maybe was too small and maybe it could have gone to six or eight I guess six probably would have where I wanted to be eight could have worked as well 12 you know obviously we’re going to see how it shakes out I think there’s a lot of teams in here that I’m very interested to watch right now and I think it certainly gives an opportunity to programs like Penn State Notre Dame and some of those other programs Tennessee programs that are you know have struggled in the past to make the 14 playoff even though they fielded really talented rosters and I think it also takes away some of the debate about the last team getting in of course we had a lot of debate this previous season with Alabama and SMU but I think in general that’s going to be more of a rare case I think it will sort of sort itself out inure future years I want to see how this plays out over the next couple weeks if we get a bunch of blowouts here and maybe change my opinion a little bit I’m not going to fully say that I’m a big fan of this I want to see what it looks like I am excited at watching the football we’ll see how it all kind of shakes out I’ve never been the biggest fan of 12 team playoff I feel like it’s damaged some of the regular season a little bit but again you can debate all you want about that that’s just my personal stance on it at the end of the day I’m excited for these first round matches I think the the Indie and a Notre game is going to be phenomenal between two inst State rivals the Ohio State Tennessee game will be a really interesting match up between two Powerhouse from their own conferences and Penn State SMU I think is not getting as much love as some other people should be giving it still a really solid match up going down to Happy Valley yeah I think certainly uh there needs to be some restructuring with how the seatings are determined and whatnot but again not a perfect system you know we’ll figure it out I think as time goes on looking at these first round games we went ahead and broke them down in full on the podcast Channel already so feel free to check those out you see our winner my winners here on screen that is um you know looking at this first round all these games are you know currently slated to have the home team as has seven-point favorites or more um you know Texas and Clemson I think is a very intriguing game 12-point line in favor of Texas who really he’s not been all that impressive this year uh on offense so the defense has really been carrying them through the cfp I think Clemson can win this game biggest problem is I just think their offensive line might get annihilated by Texas’s very impressive front if that doesn’t happen I think the Tigers certainly can probably contend for this game we both think that they’ll cover that game at the end of the day Penn State and SMU people are thinking this will be a cakewalk for the NIT Lions wi out at 12:00 though I don’t really know if the crowd’s really going to be all that energized know James Franklin still trying to win a big game got close against Oregon in the Big 10 title game probably should have beat Ohio State can’t seal the deal SMU they have a great D line a very balanced offense going into that one uh Notre Dame going up against Indiana who didn’t look great against the bucke guys but this is certainly a m a matchup they can win with their pass catchers and their veteran quarterback going up against that Irish man coverage that uh will all of a sudden have to step up immensely after struggling against USC of course Ohio State hosting Tennessee first game played since they were upset again in hilarious fashion to Michigan you know who’s the biggest uh you know opportunity here to get upset Nick because one of them’s going to happen right I mean I would assume that at least one upset will happen I’d hav pick one um but it’s going to be an opportunity for one to happen which one do you see being the most likely so before I touch on upsets I do want to quickly talk about the bracket in the preseason we both picked our own brackets I got seven out of the 12 teams right you got six out of the 12 so obviously a lot hasang change as the season goes on this has been a very unpredictable season where a lot has changed that has led to some interesting matchups here I don’t think really anyone had Indiana in the playoff you know back in August or you know SMU for that fact Arizona State Boise State certainly you know a lot of people think Boise State were a lot of people radar but Arizona state was certainly not on people’s radar for me though the biggest upset potential is easily in the 8 n game these are two teams that are really close on paper Ohio State and Tennessee I think these are two really talented teams I’m I’m going to take Tennessee to win that matchup I’m going to believe the hype you know obviously a lot of discourse on social media about the ticket sales I do think Tennessee will show out pretty strong here they have a really good fan base and if the numbers are correct that I’m seeing on social media there seems to be a lot of Tennessee fans getting tickets for this matchup I don’t think it’s going to neutralize it but I think it’s going to be a little bit less of a home environment than you would like if you’re an Ohio State fan I’m hearing a lot of issues I also think fan interest for Ohio State is down to a degree because of the disappointing loss to Michigan I think a lot of Ohio State fans are not happy with the direction of their program and I certainly think if they lose this game at home to Tennessee Ryan day should be looking for a new job February January whatever they’re going to pull the trigger on that these two teams are very evenly matched on paper there two offenses that can certainly score a lot for you am I concerned about y niik going into a cold weather environment playing in a situation never played in before yes I think that does factor into it am I you know do I believe Ohio state has more of a veteran presence that’s more Adept for playing in tougher weather environments and things like that playing in just high-profile games yes it is but I think this Tennessee team has some momentum has some Cho I think hypo will certainly put together a game plan they can run theall very effectively if that’s something they have to do in this matchup I do like Ohio State’s defense a very strong unit I wonder how they could win that match up can they be strong against Tennessee I think it’s possible right now I think Tennessee’s offense has that sort of key for me on the ground with Dylan Samson where they could really run the ball and have a lot of success in Columbus there and win that match up I like that potential upset yeah for me Ohio State I think they’re just being incredibly disrespected I I keep maintaining I don’t think they’re in the right head space when they play Michigan and they just get too defeated mentally that seem to be case in these other games you know they’ve you know not been able to win many big games as of late um but they’re competitive in those ones against Michigan I mean they’re just making the serious mistakes first two in Game of the Year for Howard first time Jaden Felding has ever had two missed kicks I mean these guys are just defeated mentally you’ve had weeks to cool off your defense is still Elite your defense didn’t lose you that game it’s not your fault this great offense can’t block up front and I know um you know I made a comment right after Seth mcgoffin went down like it’s almost doubtful that Ohio State wins a national title at this point because of the Ines up front and because I know they don’t have great depth and that’s certainly still going to be a big task they’re playing a phenomenal Tennessee defensive line um we’ve had weeks the scheme things we got Ryan Day Chip Kelly in the building we got to figure out ways to get our offense humming knit because even with the limitations up front we can still put up points and yards and all that so I think with the couple weeks off I would like to think they’ve crafted something up in the kitchen and you know if they embarrass me then you know so so be it you know maybe they should just clean house at that point but I think oh state will reach the national championship game at the end of the day you know Oregon has been great is the UN you know the UND only undefeated team left is the one seed they haven’t been all that impressive though I don’t know why their defense allowed as much as they did the Penn State probably would have won that game if we had a better play call there at the end of that contest in Indianapolis um they probably should have lost Ohio State there you know a late Slide by Will Howard the Wisconsin game didn’t look great if they had a capable quarterback they potentially lose that one this offense just doesn’t seem to stay in sting for a full four quarters it did an indie and again what was surprisingly a shootout TZ Johnson in the slots Warrior Evan Stewart I think should be getting a lot of reps in this one Dylan Gabriel been around a long time he’s got a lot of Records Heisman Podium um you know organ’s phenomenal right and I think their defense they’ve alled a lot of guys in the portal have really improved and allowed them to compete in the trenches their offensive Line’s phenomenal I just think the Buckeyes are going to win the rematch quite frankly Nick if they had any other matchup I think Oregon would probably go all the way but I’m going to stick with the Buckeyes on the left side of the bracket I think Arizona State can certainly make an interesting run I like Cam scaboo he’s phenomenal their defense plays really tough we’re all going to probably be rooting for Arizona State out say Nick I just can’t pull the trigger on them to beat Texas um you know that’s kind of it from my left side of the bracket and of course another big upset a team of Notre Dame that can’t really seem to win big games themselves either uh you know I’m seeming the double down on teams that have not been able to accomplish much Nick but um I think Notre game is a phenomenal defense I love their run game no one has stopped them all year long three-headed monster of Love uh Leonard and price they’ve been great I think that Georgia matchup it’s going to be an interesting one we’re not sitting here right in Georgia off because Carson Beck’s not going to like be playing Nick I certainly think that they’re going to be the favorite even with Gunner stocked in but I think at some point in that game uh his inexperience and him not being as great as Beck is eventually going to bite them in the back but I don’t think they’re going to get ran over by any means they’ll be competitive and they can even go to The Natty yeah I think when you look at it you know I think Conor Stockon is a lot better of a player than I think people are giving him credit for he’s a really talented player certainly watch the film on him from high school watch the film on him from Georgia I don’t think it’s you know because Beck doesn’t play I don’t think it’s a wash I think this is still a competitive contest between either Indiana or Notre Dame against George I think you know Gunner Stockton could really hold his own out there but I do agree in a high pressure situation we saw him make a mistake at the end SC title game I think he make a similar mistake like that he can only get you so far again I don’t think they’re in any sort of danger of really being absolutely watched sort of like when you look at the comparison I know a lot of people are comparing Florida State’s injury that quarterback and Jordan Travis to Beck’s injury saying oh well this is what happened last year but the Florida State quarterback room was significantly weaker than the Georgia quarterback room I think Stockton’s a lot better than any of the options that Florida State reeled out last year when they ultimately fell part and missed the college reall playoff you know I think that Stockton’s a serviceable quarterback but the end of the day I agree with you I think you know Notre Dame has shown that they can run the ball and Georgia’s been weak against the run compared to previous years under Kirby Smart they have a really good running Duo there with love price and Riley Leonard I think they can really run the ball move the ball on the ground with you and they could really catch you off guard I just don’t think George is really ready to kind of battle that sort of rushing attack that’s had a lot of success so far this season Notre Dam’s playing is one of the hottest teams in the nation ever since that lost to NIU they’ve been a completely different team Marcus Freeman has flip the script they’ve not played the toughest schedule in the world they’re also fresh they’ve not played recently they have to play in a uh in a b in a conference title game that is cuz they don’t play in a conference they’re right where they want to be in my opinion this notan team has so much juice you and I both have them going to National Championship game I think just makes too much sense this team is really talented on defense really talented on offense and the matchup for me I think feels good against Indiana and feels good against Georgia I like what this notan team can do I think they’re in a really good spot I think they can just play physical football and I know they’ve played a relatively weak schedule they have played some tough opponents though and their offense did the exact same thing they’ve did all year against the weaker ones so it’s hard to say a jury still out on Notre Dame I think for Georgia they ended up running the ball quite well in that second half against Texas that was impressive this is another Stout front seven probably not as skilled up front as Texas but I mean there’s still a lot of great players for the Irish and they have a great schemer Marcus Freeman um and I think for Georgia they didn’t trust Stockton at all in that game they wouldn’t run the ball once they got in the plus territory for the most part ni especially in between the Red Zone they didn’t want to run the ball at all and they let him throw the ball on that third down and he almost cost it him the season with that they one time they trusted him he made a m Monumental error and obviously the game plan is going to be tiller around and they got a month to figure it out so I think that’s certainly going to benefit him tremendously will he have a good game possibly but the supporting cast for them is not really stepped up for Carson Beck why would it do anything here you know that’s kind of the biggest question mark the offensive line has had its own struggles I don’t know if they’re going to be able to run the ball to the tune of beating the Irish um that’s going to be a big physical Affair though can’t wait to see that match up I hope it happens and then uh Penn State and Boise State you know kind of focus on this one hypothetical of course I think for Boise State though everyone’s just going to pick them to lose regardless I think this side of the bracket’s very interesting because all these teams are capable of making it to the semifinal Aston giante of course having a historic season we’ve alluded to how his you know threat as a runner has allowed their passing attack to really Thrive you all those guys up in the boxes play action passing you know vertical routes guys uh uh you know up the seam you know guys into the flat it allows them to stay on track on offense they’re not you know behind the sticks very often if they play a pen state or smun Nick I’m not convinced that those teams at least early on would be loading the Box because those are much more physical teams much deeper a lot more size than in the Mountain West and that’s another thing that could really play in the Boise’s hand but if they can’t run the ball against a loaded box it’s not going to be because of gean it’s just because this offensive line is going to get overpowered and I think the defense they’ve been good this year but they’re not great you know I think Boise would have to win by really grinding it out and potentially winning in a shootout um Boise can play with some house money and be heroic and take some risks though Nick but it seems like they’re going to be double digit underdogs whoever they play yeah I think Boise state has a lot of good opportunities here I think you make a lot of great points there you know you and I have discussed this at length this year that when you play Boise State right now the method is load the Box load the Box put everyone in the box and really try to make jany earn his yards and he’s still doing that even though he’s playing a stacked box pretty much every single game I don’t think Penn State would stack the box I think they’re going to say go out and beat us you know we’re going to still try to play our normal defense we’re not going to adjust for Jan we’re going to see what you can do just go out and beat us see if he can have that day see if that offensive line can hold up because I don’t know if that offensive line can hold up that’s certainly the biggest concern for me when it comes to Bo stays can that offensive line hold up against a physical defensive line with Incredible pass rush you know D Danny Danny Sutton Abdul Carter incredibly talented pieces for Penn State that can really absolutely run you over I think that’s a very intriguing matchup I think you know Boise State could get the job done that’s this is a side the bracket right now when you look at those three teams Penn State Boise State and SMU I think all three of those teams could potentially come out of that right I think this is a matchup where there’s teams here that are super talented but also have some weaknesses and some advantages when you look at Penn State they have kind of flown under the radar for a lot of people because they you know they ended up sneaking their way into the conference title game absolutely put up a ton of points on the board and played a lot better in in Indianapolis I think anyone really would have really expected Drew lur made a bad mistake towards the end of the game and that kind of ended up costing him but they hung around with Oregon and showed hey we’re still a really damn good team SMU they also put up a hell of a fight in that conference title game they were down by a boat and they nearly came back and won the thing Kevin Jennings is incredible quarterback where they can really scheme something up I’m not counting out SMU at Penn State I don’t think they’re going to win that game but I’m certainly not counting it out with the fact that it’s at noon you know maybe they have a chance to win that matchup I just think all three of these teams could get out of the side of the bracket right now with things are at I can understand why you picked Penn State I could I’m going to pick Boise say it makes a lot of sense for me but this is a very intriguing sort of three teams in this little corner of the bracket this little quarter of the bracket that is cuz all three of these teams they could have a great case to get out of there and go play in in the semi-final a chance to go play for National Title yeah if SMU wins round one they’re a sneaky Underdog to run the table because that proves they can play with the big dogs R Lashley you know he’s a hell of an offensive coach and they’re going to be tough to slow down they got weapons of Galore really good defense as well SMU not being talked about really at all in any respect you try to show them like I did earlier today people just you know crap on you so SMU is a good team though uh well deserved they got into the playoffs move into your bracket Nick very similar to mine but for the most part you pulled um some bigger upsets than I did we just talked about that Boise State one in length will they make that final four Arizona State Over Texas you know I’ll be rooting for the Sun Devils you know we were in Dallas got to you know interact with them a good bit um great program that they have built Kenny Dillingham Hines Ward that coaching staff scat of course is Elite and I alluded to how I think their defense is pretty good you know their secondary has been playing with some really good chemistry Texas has just been struggling on offense we’ll see what the narrative is after that round one game if they advance but I think Arizona state is a fun team to root for you know again in the trenches Texas is just so advanced in that regard it’s hard to pick them to lose many games especially against ASU who might not be up to the challenge in that regard um these guys play hard and they’re very tough to slow down scabo I you know he’s going to be tough to hold to under 100 yards levit you know them not having Jordan Tyson I think is going to be a big problem as they enter the cfp um they’re going to probably compete and keep it close Nick I would say for at least a half I think Arizona State’s a good football team but again not having Tyson there they don’t have many guys at receiver you can lean on against the elite defense might be Troublesome for them so for me I can’t pull the trigger but this is college football at the end of the day and they’ll win the game for quite frankly no reason at all yeah I’m going to roll the dice here I think Arizona State’s such a good team for a lot of the reasons you alluded to there we saw this team up close in personal they really beat the breaks off of Iowa state camp scat was just incredible player levit looks really dialed in the play calling has been incredible I’ve really liked what they’ve done on the play calling they’ve changed it up a couple rpos different options they’ve really sort of built this uh Playbook really solid the receivers have looked great I think this is a unit that’s really good am I a little worried about the trenches of course any time you play an SEC team as a big 12 team I’m going to be worried about what the trenches could look like but Texas they’ve been playing weak football in my opinion and there’s a lot of question marks you know there’s a lot of rumors swirling about whether or not eers is going to get the start here do they want to make the switch and plug Manning in and let him get some reps and practice are they not confident in eers if feels like U just has that lack of confidence as rumors about him transferring there’s a whole lot of mess going down there and I think you know I don’t think it’s necessarily a guarantee they beat Clemson you and I I think Clemson will both cover that spread it’s like 112 depending on what book you’re looking at I think that’s a lot of points I think Clemson has a good opportunity to cover that spread and maybe even win the game outright I won’t pull the trigger there I just think Texas have shown to be a little fraudulent this year and they put themselves yes their their draw is not bad with Clemson Arizona state but I just don’t feel great about it with this Texas team the offense has not wowed me really at all as of late the defense has been good but the offense has been letting me down yes they’re really strong on the defensive side of the ball and the trenches and yes the offense line has incredibly talented pieces but I still worry a little bit we’ve seen Arizona State get some good pass rush pressure on recent opponents as well and that offense just is scoring at such a high clip with Kenny Dillingham and the rest of the offensive staff putting together a great game plan week in week out I feel really good about the sundevils being competitive in that quarterfinal and winning that matchup and also being competitive in a semi-final against Oregon who I do have going all the way to National Title I think Oregon are just the best team right now in college football I can understand why you would be a little cold feet on them I certainly get that I was impr impr with how they won that game against Penn State because TZ Johnson a great day and yes the defense looked weak against Penn State but in general I think that was a bit of a one-off and I think the defense is shown that there’s still a really strong unit across the board and I think Gabriel is dialed in the offensive play calling has been phenomenal over there as well I pulled the trigger on Boise State we talked about it earlier not going to go super in depth there and I like I said earlier in the episode Tennessee over Ohio State for me that just makes a lot of sense in the 89 matchup if I had to you know think is Oregon a little bit of a risk against Tennessee potentially but I think Oregon does get the job done and goes and fights their way to National Championship right now for me again I said they’re the best team in college football I still believe that and I think there’s no reason to doubt them as they head into the playoffs now we’ll move to our final slide here National Championship predictions not much for you really explain on Oregon Nick you know it’s a common pick number one seed undefeated I think for me though I probably have to explain this one a little bit more considering they just lost to Michigan I’m still picking Ohio State to win the national title sticking to my preseason pick you know I certainly think the limitations up front are going to be an issue we’ve got a couple weeks though to get healthy and get right and potentially you know adjust our past sets against this tough Tennessee defensive line you allude to and of course they’ have to play Oregon and Texas and whoever it’d be a tough road to the National Title this is still one of the most talented rosters in America this defense is Elite no one has did anything to it all year they missed one tackle on third down against Michigan who’s had the ball the entire game and that cost some many contests because the offense was in such Peril they didn’t take as many risks as I would imagine against Michigan kept running the ball trying to stay ahead of the sticks they just need to let that thing fly put confidence in your veteran quarterback and those Elite wide receivers they lost to Michigan to 22 at home got blown out there in that fourth quarter and I turned around and picked him the beat Georgia Nick everyone laughed at me for a month they completely clowned me I was like all right just watch guys they should have won the game quite frankly they would have won the national title as well they put on a complete Clinic Ryan Day says that they prepared harder than they ever had prepared in his time with Ohio State I think you’re going to see that grittiness there I mean this is a guy who seems to be taking these losses on the chin as best as you can you know it’s been pretty embarrassing the big games they’ve been losing but I’m Pro I promise you these guys are going to be prepared Nick and it’s totally possible they come out flat Saturday night I just don’t think that’s going to be the case this team needs to play up to a better potential I think that’s certainly what’s going to happen here they’re going to play with a lot of motivation a lot of grit a lot of those players aren’t happy a f a flag was planted on their field um you know I think you’re going to see a different type of emotion not one that you know allows them to play bad but in a good way they can generate some positivity and play good football and I think they’ll beat Notre Dame for the national title game I think Ohio state gets the job done I think they run the title here I think people overlooking them significantly Nick um The Lost of Michigan it’s bad it’s horrendous probably the worst in college football history but let’s not forget on paper what this team can do and that was that that was a couple weeks ago Nick let’s put that behind us just like Notre Dame put NIU behind them and it hasn’t affected them since Ohio state they’re going to win the national championship game I might end up looking silly um but that’s just fine I think this is how it’s going to go and usually I’m not wrong when I feel bold about things you’re certainly putting your chips on the table you know betting the Ohio state is a gamble that I would not advise a lot of people to make but you know this team pretty well you know you eventually convinced me to go with Ohio State against Georgia I picked Georgia when we first sat down and did it but after two weeks I watched some film I listen to some of the things you’re were saying but I did my own film research as well I dug into the numbers and I started to realize that hey maybe you know Ohio state is the better team in that matchup and they really should have beat Georgia Unfortunately they did not for that program we could be having a totally different conversation right now cuz I think they would have waxed TCU when it was all said and for me I’m taking the Ducks you know maybe two touchdowns is a bit lofty it’s kind of tough for me to figure out what type of score we could have here no disp Notre Dam they’re phenomenal team but Oregon has just shown nothing to me that would make me think they’re not the best team in the country right now defense is the only thing you could really be concerned about I have no worries about the offense the defense yes is a little bit shaky at times but I still feel pretty confident in them I think that this is Dan Lanning coach team who’s a phenomenal coach of guy that’s been you know ready for this moment these guys are bought in this offense is really good the secondary I think can have a step up moment here I like what they have on the defensive line which has really been playing very good football as of late bailed them out in that Wisconsin game certainly defensive line was really dominant at the end of that matchup I like the Ducks here think this team is just really good I you know I picked them to go to the national title game back in August I picked Georgia to win at all I don’t feel really confident Georgia right now they’re not the same team that I thought they were going to be this year they’ve looked a shell of what I thought they were going to look like but Oregon’s looked as expected looked as advertised if not better than advertise I got to go with the Ducks here maybe it’s a bit you know boring going the number one seed overall but having you know a lower seed Notre a team that’s run the gauntlet going from the first round all the way to the title makes me feel a little bit better about at the seven seed that is in the Fighting Irish I like Oregon here give me the Ducks although I think a lot could happen and I think there could be certainly upsets that people are not expecting especially in the later rounds of some good some weaker teams on paper have good games early on in the playoff that’s going to be it for today’s episode should be a good 12 team playoff I guess we’ll see how this first year goes games going down Friday and
