K Hughes just cooked and made a perfect trade for the Montreal Canadians as Montreal acquires K qua right-hand shot defenseman Alex Kier from the nationville predators in exchange for Justin Baron one for one this has big implications as to what Mal San L will do with the lineup and with what Ken Hughes will do with the roster moving forward as we approach the trade deadline let’s get right into this we got to start by Montreal making this one forone trade Justin Baron for Alex Kier and as Chris Johnston said NHL trades are going to keep coming because teams have until 11:59 p.m. tomorrow night to make moves before the leagues holiday roster freeze takes effect let’s go back to this right now there’s trades going on left and right we just saw Capo kako get shipped off to the Seattle Kraken we saw Joseph go back to the Pittsburgh Penguins for future considerations and right now it’s Kent Hughes turn we knew a right-hand shot defenseman had to be something Montreal prioritized and you know we knew Justus and baron theoretically could maybe get there we have Mayu and we have reinbacher in the pipeline but what we need is defense we need a solid defensive right-and shot defenseman and Ken Hughes went out and got a guy that we have mentioned a bunch of times on the channel and for those of you who have been around for a while you know we’ve mentioned Alex Kier a lot and I’ll bring up J Fresh’s player card for him Alex Kier he’s only 5’11 six feet so he’s not the tallest guy but his even strength defense War percentage is 65% 62% on the PK but he’s playing tough minutes in Nashville 90 second percentile in terms of the competition he’s going up against now the big thing here is this is Justin Baron who are not sure if he can crack the lineup leaving and we know David sard is an unrestricted free agent after this year so whether we move him at the deadline or sometime before the deadline which we probably will he’ll be gone before next year and there’s a deep deep need for a right-hand shot defensive defenseman to kind of replace him and that’s exactly what Alex carer brings he’s not going to hit a ton his hit numbers are not huge across the board let’s see if I got that here oh yeah I do have it here you can see his career high in hits is 95 which is not crazy but he blocks shots not David saard numbers but he blocks some shots he gets some hits his offensive upside is not really there but he had 30 points in 2122 with Nashville and I actually know a guy who played against him in Jor said he was the best player he ever played against in junor and this guy played against Dylan stro just saying right he was on the all rookie team 10th in cder voting I think this guy has a real real potential to do some good for Montreal’s roster but at the cost of Justin Baron I’m not going to spend too much time discussing Justin Baron himself as HS fans we all know who he is but maybe you’re a Predators fan watching this video trying to get some new information I’ll do a little rundown to Justin Baron offensive defenseman bottom pairing guy I still think he could hit his stride in the right situation the problem is his decision- making in his own Zone hasn’t been that amazing don’t forget though last year seven goals in 48 games that’s pretty good for an offensive defenseman especially at his age I think he can still grow into something but Montreal is trading one of their assets that they had for the future one of their prospects though young players I should say in favor of a guy who was much more established in Alex k a guy who’s 28 years old a guy who was locked up for three years you’re getting him right in the middle of his prime maybe slightly at the tail end but at a CIT that is very reasonable he’s 28 years old he shoots right he’s in year one of a three-year deal with a $3.75 million capit is there any coincidence that almost exactly replaces David sard’s capit I don’t think that’s a coincidence at all and I think in fact it has huge implications for what K Hughes will do because I think this tells us right now that David sabar is out the door we knew this already and me and Jesse talked in this video about whether Kent would do something before the roster freeze before Christmas or after turns out it’s before I said I didn’t think he needed to turns out he wanted to do it anyway this signifies that a David Savard move is absolutely imminent we’ll probably have another video breaking that possibility down coming up soon but this feels a need for Montreal and there’s no two ways about it and he’s pretty beloved in nashs Brooks Bratton tweets here on the other hand here’s wishing all the very best to Alex kerer in Montreal an excellent hockey player and an even better person we will miss you in smashville and you know what I love to I just absolutely love to see that right as Alex car is a guy who can fill in he’s not an offensive guy he does exactly what you’ll need him to do and the question is now what kind of implications does this have for Maran San Lou and the Habs lineup going forward because we know net front defense has been a problem and while we’re bringing k a sar’s probably on the way out you know it is what it is so what does that mean for the defensive pairings well right now they’re kind of all over the place I mean Hudson’s been playing playing a lot with mat though I don’t know if that’s the long-term solution could Hudson play with a guy like Kier I think it actually kind of fits I’m not up to speed on whether Kier has like really good skating or not yet to be seen do we see gly with a guy like Kier we know Jacky has had a lot of good chemistry with David SAR and Kier plays a somewhat similar game could he come in and fill in on that bottom pairing I got a feeling Kier is going to play second pairing this is a guy that plays 18 to 22 minutes a night every single night he’s a guy that can go out there eat minutes and be solid which still reminds me a lot of SAR and ker is going to play a lot of PK as well so where do you want to pair him right I think Montreal’s defensive pairings are still pretty liquid I mean we’ve seen Hudson with mat we’ve seen mat with ghouly a bunch we’ve seen Savard with Hudson we’ve seen strubel all over the lineup so I think this is just going to give Marty some free reign to test some some things out when you get a new player yeah you can say by play style whether or not he’ll fit with someone in particular like I actually think a gouie carrier pairing would be something absolutely nasty for other teams to go up against because gly is improving night after night on the defensive end we’re seeing that after his seven block shot performance in the havs last game versus Buffalo he was unbelievable and we see gly who can also skate with the best of them and create offensive opportunities and one of these two-way Elite defenseman like well I mean Elite defenseman in my eyes I love Kaden Gully unbiased Sumi one of these Elite two-way defensemen I’m calling him right now he’s going to be that the rest of the NHL is going to be saying that a year from now you pair him with a G ker who is not going to put up a ton of points like I said but he’s going to be able to contribute to some extent right his plus minus historically is pretty good on solid national teams this year is pretty terrible but that’s because Nashville’s pretty terrible right I think he could fit very well next to aaden gy but I don’t know what we see him next to Hudson I’m seeing Habs fans say that already right they’re both kind of small but I think they could work together as well the dudes from Quebec City where I live right now as a lot of you guys know so maybe they’ll see him around who knows but at the end of the day what I do just have to talk about is the fact that Ken Hughes did some good asset management here because we have been talking constantly I’m going to bring the trade back up we’ve been talking constantly about how Montreal has all these assets for the future they have a plethora of young players and a bunch of draft capital and there are some needs that need to be fixed right now we’ve heard for weeks that Montreal has been in the market for a veteran right-hand shot defenseman on a decent cap hit and we figured that would probably come with some term that’s why we’ve mentioned Alex kerer we mentioned will borgan even though he was an unrestricted free agent after this year he gets traded to New York to be a pseudo Jacob trouba replacement still don’t understand why New York did that trade seems like way too little for kokako but we’ve been throwing names out left and right but this guy just seemed like he fit very well right Alex Kier and you can go back I I maybe I’ll find the video and Link it somewhere so you guys can go back and see that we talked about this but I know that sometimes it’s hard to separate like links of a trade tree when you have the leenan trade which is what netted Baron in the pick right originally so you almost link lein into this trade that leads to carry a but I think we can separate that because Baron did show promise he just hasn’t followed through the way we wanted him to and that’s okay not everyone will Kent H sees that he sees a young guy that’s going to be blocked out very soon by Ryan Bacher or Mayu Baron’s a guy that couldn’t really crack the Habs roster based on his play alone and they couldn’t really wave him to send him down to Laval because he’s no longer wave or exempt he’s a guy that’s kind of rotting in that six seventh D Spot with the guys who are going to step over him the Habs would have had no choice but to move on from Baron at some point and I think right now even though his value is fairly low it could risk to get even lower there could have been a scenario where Montreal was forced to wave him right he’s on a good cap hit for Nashville they’re freeing up some money they might make a big swing for someone I’m seeing some people say cousins I don’t know right Nashville has some money now freed up from the Kier contract taken on only I think like 1 1.5 million for Justin Baron it’s a win for them they get rid of Kier who’s not been super amazing for them but I think could really do well in Montreal in a place where he’s going to be given a prominent role and a clear role something that they really want him to do there’s no offense expected you got your role here Alex kerer you focus on that I think it’s an unbelievable move by Kent Hughes I think this is exactly what the Habs needed and I think they traded one of their young guys that was going to get blocked out anyway for a guy that will contribute for at least two and a half Seasons so let me know your thoughts on this down below I think this is amazing and I think a lot of you guys will too let us know down below but that’ll do it for this episode I’m so excited about this of habs digest if you
