being part of the show and making us your first listen today and the best way you can help us grow the show is to listen every day like the video and comment anything below today’s episode is presented by the college football playoff wow the college football playoff is here you don’t want to miss a moment of the action college football playoff presented by all states begins with four first round games this Friday and Saturday on ESPN ABC TNT and Max well we’re here with breaking news as the Cubs have traded Cody Bellinger and $5 million to the Yankees for relief pitcher Cody potit uh the Cubs and Yankees were trading a lot of conversations over the last week or so and in the event of the Kyle Tucker trade that happened Friday things were moving down the field at a pretty quick Pace there was a staring contest of sorts on the finances which we’re going to sort out for you this segment as well but Bellinger is a Yankee he is going to play outfield for them the Cubs did send money over but it was only $5 million spread out apparently across two years and the Cubs don’t get a large return but they do get a potential Major League piece in Cody potit we’ll get you numbers on him later Sam I do say this was inevitable because the Cubs have a log Jam of positions they really like Michael Bush at first they made the Kyle Tucker trade knowing that Matt Shaw is gonna get some run at third uh they have four outfielders with with ha PCA Suzuki and Tucker this trade was coming and as much as we like to maybe dream a little bit about oh can they keep everybody the answer is no and now they even have further Financial flexibility as well I’m I’m already surprised at the at the backlash from from from the trade in the sense that you know we we’ve talked about this for for months this this was never going to be a straight trade where the Cubs got better directly this was always going to be an indirect trade Starlin Castro to the Yankees for Adam Warren Why move on from the Castro salary and be able to bring in Ben zist that basically was the trade so the Cubs the reason why this trade was taking so long is that Brian Cashman was trying to flex his muscles and get the Cubs to eat more money we said on the air I thought it was ridiculous for the Cubs to eat anything more than six seven per year they’re only according to Jesse Rogers they’re only eating two and a half million per season which is five million total um which I think is actually a win for the Cubs just just because it’s also a win for the Yankees because he’s going to play center field Yankee Stadium and I think he’s going to rake there uh over at the short porch doesn’t mean that that wasn’t a a smart move for the Cubs the question now for the Cubs becomes this what are they going to do with those extra funds what are they going to do with that extra money and that will determine the trade so right now the trade is Cody Bellinger and and and uh uh the for Cody petite with the extra money that the Cubs have left but the part the tra is what do the Cubs do with that Cody Bellinger did not have a place to play here Michael Bush uh this morning Jed Hoyer basically publicly confirmed he’s going to be the first baseman okay seya Suzuki is a better offensive player than than uh uh Cody Bellinger PCA is gonna be their center fielder of the future that’s his position that’s his job Kyle Tucker is better than Cody Bellinger at every single thing in regards of baseball and Ian hap has a full no trade clause so he’s not going anywhere so now it is on Tom Ricketts and Jed Hoyer to take this extra money I believe it’s if if the math maths it’s 25 extra million that you’re going to have at your disposal in 2025 to go get your team better is it is it a little bit of everything maybe a third base uh guy to help Matt Shaw maybe a bullpen guy maybe a big starter whatever it is there is money now and now it gets fun I am happy with this deal and and it made all the sense in the world Matt yeah for whatever reason at least according to Fan graphs they had Bellinger at 26.6 for the aav for luxury tax purposes so yeah this goes down to about 24 then that they that they saved um with with with this deal which is really really interesting and if I round up a little bit or or round down I guess uh to the total that they entered the day with Sam they’re gonna have 50 m to the first threshold yeah it’s gonna be between 49 and 50 right uh so for clean to be a cleaner number would be 50 I guess to operate in uh let’s get to that later okay because they’re probably not going to go to the first threshold because they made a huge error Monumental error last year y um and I actually didn’t know how small huge eror but but small amount of money it was like 100k 150k maybe mon Merl report reported it two months ago none of us saw that uh respectfully so let’s let’s go over that uh later uh I you know you gave me a few days Cubs to to think oh and I got my notepad out could Cody Bellinger stay the answer is no and the other player that projects really well for next year better than b ER again it’s just a projection but he actually projects not only better but incrementally better is Michael Bush Michael Bush right now is projected to have a better season in 2025 than Cody Bellinger Cody Bellinger makes $27 million Michael Bush makes $800,000 this was inevitable I’m glad they got the trade done I’m actually a little bit relieved this whole situation was so odd I feel like last year not to Cody Bellinger’s fault he held us hostage Boris did right but what a weird turn of events right we waited till February for Cody Bellinger to return what we knew in the back of our minds proved to be true they needed more people pieces to the offense that bore out in reality it wasn’t just what we saw on the screen or the piece of paper they really needed to add more just to bring him back wasn’t enough but because the way the off season went we we were we were buying into that and except maybe Sam wasn’t uh but I just feel like now a year later we were waiting for him to go we were even hoping he would opt out possibly a and now he’s gone the Yankees have been interested in him at the 23 deadline last off season and the 24 deadline this is a nice fit for him and for them to finally come to terms on on money and the return in terms of player cost uh there is a sense of relief for me and and part of the fun of this is to look at okay what are they at now with the payroll what could they do uh I think a lot of that is going to be investment Believe It or Not M Bullpen which is something that Jed Hoyer has basically not done his whole career uh as the president of baseball operations um but but Sam I I like the deal I’m glad Jed I I think is it is it fair to say Jed Hoyer won the staring contest I think I think it’s it’s fair to say for what they were uh you know staring about like I still think the Yankees did really well here it reminds me a lot of the per situation with Houston I don’t think Cody Bellinger was gonna have a big year here but I think playing center field at Yankee Stadium it’s going to work but yes in terms of the staring contest I mean there were reports the Yankees wanted the cubc 10 million that’s a lot yeah and that was I I I when I saw that I was like this is they’re not I if I if I were on the conversation the the phone with cash said let me know when you’re serious if you want Bellinger that’s not serious right and I said that on here it was never serious and it turned out to be two and a half a year I think um you know they got those two guys like you’ve pointed out have a good relationship yeah I I I I think petite um you know that’s really not a real part of the deal if that ends up actually helping it’s fine this was all about money and the deal will not be answered the deal will not be solidified into what how what we figure out the Cubs do with those those extra those extra funds I mean I I I’m really surprised like this was you know and and you say that you’re relieved it’s over I’m relieved it’s over because I felt like I was missing something it was a it became like the Tucker thing but that only lasted two days it was like we know what okay we know it’s cam Smith just trade cam Smith right I did an about it this was we know it’s about the money it’s obvious Cashman just make the move already and in that in that case yes Jed won the staring contest because um they really didn’t have to eat a whole lot I mean at all and and and one thing I will give credit for uh to Jed is I like that like you know sometimes things are a sunk cost and you move on the the Bellinger thing he had to make that deal last year because there are no other options and you had to be serious about trying to win uh he regressed from last year he was not terrible but what the way the team is there was no reason trying to rescue and defend yourself hey and Jed made no mistake about it after the season he basically publicly GM speak president baseball ope said uh we want him kned out if you want a guy to stay you don’t say hey he’s a really good player with options so he’s gonna have to see what he wants to do that is literally please opt out once he opted back in it was always a matter of time and it just came out to money and now we see what the Cubs can do is it frustrating that we’re on this show and we continue to have to mark the first luxury tax of course it is of course that’s frustrating but that’s just part of the reality that we live in now and you know I I we’ve done at least a half a dozen episodes talking about it there’s nothing more we could do this is the reality we got Kyle Tucker we still have some money to spend and now Jed needs to take that money and make this team holess make sure that there are no major holes going into March 18th and that this team is projected to cruise not win but cruise over the Milwaukee Brewers of win this Division and they’re well on their way they they did what they needed to do here yeah no that’s a great that’s a great way to put it and it does seem like things are uh trending in that in that direction and uh I I do want to to finally unveil the lineup for the Chicago Cubs as of today as of today and my apologies I don’t have this ready for the video version of our show so I’ll just read it aloud okay okay let me lock in happen left zuzuki at DH hey did you know that Ian hap and David bedar played ball together go ahead Tucker and right you know Kyle Tucker right Sam I’ve heard of him ah uh cleanup as of right now is Michael Bush yeah he’s playing first base yeah five and this is a conservative lineup right now okay five Dansby SW Johson at Shore mhm six PCA in Center seven Herer at second eight sha third nine the catcher amay or Kelly yeah yeah it it it feels it still feels one major spot away from being like a Lee Elite because you know Craig and I’m not trying to disrespect your lineup you know Craig’s not hitting Tucker and Bush back to back when it’s game time because then one Lefty neutralizes him so it’s got you know maybe maybe they bump everybody up at the end of the year they were hitting Swanson second maybe well I think they might open the year with that yeah you threw out Herer second so then this way you could have Suzuki bat behind Tucker four something like that I I still would like one more right-handed bat to to make things you know a little bit better but um wow interesting yeah just like I like when I hear that lineup I don’t go oh my gosh like we’re going to cruise to a division it’s just just better than what it was you know yeah Michael Bush is not a cleanup hitter on a you know on an elite that’s always been my point yeah right right so they still have one more situation but you know maybe they address that later on my prediction interesting my prediction is that Matt Shaw is gonna answer those questions for you just gonna take some time so internally right right uh but yeah I I I think it’s really good and you know this was a move that happened and now we now we play the waiting game and Jed even said uh this today hey we’re not done yet so now it’s interesting I you know well we have a segment coming up for what’s next so I I’ll save that all right let’s let’s update the payroll and then also combine that with what’s next because I am curious about them potentially adding an offensive piece because I guess in my mind I I’ve just resigned myself to okay this is the these are the starters yep but perhaps that could change we’ll uh we’ll see and and uh coming up next payroll update uh what’s next either offensively or pitching or both uh please stay tuned hey today’s episode is brought to you by Select thanks everyone uh for for joining us us if you are with us live right now Sam and I do a show on the Cubs five days a week and we love doing it if you’re here for the first time we hope you will stick with us during the off season and Beyond as we get into Baseball spring training Spring train first Spring Training Game Sam isn’t that far away I know that’s C February 20th is the first game against the LA Dodgers all right where do you want to sort this out here I do I I’d like teasing the potential offensive piece part I’d like to do that last and should we let everyone in on what we were up to before we press record on this show yeah so we could do we could go the bullpen route um I I I guess the last point I just want to make is that I just you I keep see like Cody Belling or the Cubs wanted him opt out so just pretend that he opt it out that’s basically what happened here yeah yeah I think complicated matters him opting in it did yeah it’s they wanted him opt out of his deal so they could do things so you know think of it like that and and that might make it easier that’s good I like I like putting it that simply I do yeah yeah so just just try and look at it like that it just cost you an extra two and a half million because he didn’t opt out that’s yes yes it did which in the grand scheme they’re going to have to take it on the chin and move forward and that’s exactly what they’re going to do here let’s talk about the what what we were talking about so you know this news actually broke in the middle of an episode we were recording that had a bullpen emphasis and we stopped that recording made the background the thumbnail got in here right away uh to apparently the tune of a four-digit number I I don’t know this feeling yet Sam I know you you did this on Friday 1100 11 1160 now 1175 people joining us live to talk Cody Bellinger to the New York Yankees we are blessed the Cubs have now about $50 million to the first threshold probably GNA be closer to 40 to give themselves Elbow Room during the season yep say that one more time explain that to people it’s yeah because Jed hoyer’s position is hey I’m trying to build a winning team from opening day but I want to leave my myself room to add to that contending roster in July right so the last 60 games of the year I could improve my Bullpen I could improve my rotation I could add that last offensive piece perhaps or or a combination of two or three of those things perhaps the bench or something like that uh to really solidify our our contending status down the stretch and to do that you need to pay that person that’s going to enter your roster so they’re going to leave themselves some breathing room there probably about n910 million would be my guess okay and that’s plenty of money because it’s a pro-rated number for whoever you acquire because the season a lot of the seasons’s already been played right check deposits every two weeks so I think Jed is going to do what he really hasn’t done in his career as president which is make a healthy investment in the bullpen and I understand he did the one year for nine o to Hector nerys last February disaster but there is really solid name still on the board and if that person isn’t Tanner Scott or Jeff Hoffman or Carlos Estes there’s still some really solid names here that improve your pen a pen which right now fangraph says is the fifth worst in baseball when I look at these names Sam I don’t see that yep but I do think they need to add externally at least one piece and I would vow for one righty and one Lefty I’m going to repeat myself only to you from about 40 minutes ago and say this I’m not as concerned about hey I would you know I would never be angry if they took a shot at a major reliever like a Tanner Scott and spent real money by the way it’ be fun yeah yeah which you know people forget that yeah what I would love to tell these 123 people is this the Cubs need to do a better job out of of spring training identifying who’s throwing the ball well because in 2023 and 2024 the bullpen did not get fixed until June and it was an unmitigated disaster in April and May 23 that was led by Michael Fulmer and Brad Boxberger remember him and in 2024 it was led by adbert aleli and Hector nerys what Jed needs to do a better job of and he took full responsibility of this at the end of this season is have more options and more depth for Craig Council so he doesn’t have to come out and say like last year we need adbert to be good so we have to keep running him out there instead after two or three outings and it’s not about the results it’s about how he looked right adbert never looked right last year Craig could have the presence of mind saying hey this isn’t going to work and we can’t afford to drop um eight nothing leads in San Diego 107 leads in Arizona 6-3 lead against the Giants we need to get out in front of this and say hey in until I see your adjustment until I see the sharpness change you’re going to be a low-leverage guy because guess what now we have options to go to you know we could go to a guy and hey you know what Porter’s having some command issues to start the season we know he’s going to be all right so we’re gonna go to kirby8 we’re gonna go you know what Luke Little’s throwing the ball really well we like him we’re gonna go to him and and and create that those depth and and and the options there where we’re not stuck just going because I said it all year in April I go Cubs are going to going to need narison alai man so you got to just roll the punches well it cost us how many games early on in the season so to me that’s what they need to focus on but because of a trade like this with Bellinger they now have all this extra money to play with where they could be aggressive they could go out and overpay a guy they the Cub should not get out bid for Kirby eight they could overpay him by a couple million because they have the flexibility now yeah it’s a great point I I I I like this Bullpen group I just want it to get better to solidify them right and hjj Morgan Miller Pearson Maryweather Thompson little and brown because of health status or performance or both I have that order of locks to not um but guess what I think Ben Brown could be a great short short appearance guy I think you might see Kate Horton in that role I don’t see Javier Assad or Jordan wicks in that role I think they’re going to be starters in De MO or on another team uh to open the year but I think for this group to improve is is really really important and like Sam is talking about you you only saw that every other game the first 60 games uh is that enough yeah it is uh righty candidates that the Cubs have been connected to so there is some smoke here already kiry Yates and Kyle finegan uh lefties AJ Minter and HBY Milner and those are just the guys that the Cubs are in the convo for maybe four five six teams in on those guys there’s other names down down the list but if we’re talking High leverage names those are the ones and they’re gonna add a lefty for sure yeah and I and I understand if it’s HBY Milner because of the Craig Council connection as a former Brewer but man would I be excited about AJ Minter you know bounce back from an injury he’s been excellent uh Kirby Yates I think is the best pitcher on the market who you can get for one year he’s likely get a get 10 to 12 million but that’s the price you’re GNA have to the price of doing business and he’s going to be 38 this season uh but he had a 117 ER with 85 strikeouts in 61 Innings maybe he’s the guy to set up Hodge or hodj is the setup man shout out to Kyle Stanley to Kirby Yates um there there’s options here uh those are the names that I have on my card right now and shoot with this kind of money that they’re able to spend uh do they get a little crazy and get tanner Scott do they sign three of these names that I mentioned not two uh we’ll see yeah and and I think I think now it gets fun like now I’m having a good time now it gets fun because now you have real money to spend I would be surprised if they went after one major guy like like you know I see a lot of bregman mentions on Twitter I don’t the same reason you just traded ESO pedus is why you probably don’t want to acquire bregman uh he he hits a lot of home runs in the Crawford boxes you don’t have that at Wrigley Field um so you know I’m I’m interested to see what they do and um I’m excited I I knew that this deal was going to be polarizing and I knew it was coming and like you said I’m just glad it’s out of the way I hope we did a good job I hope we did a good job explaining the Cubs rationale for this I think so and I just challenge everybody instead of making an assumption on the deal just wait to see what the Cubs do with an extra 25 million dollar for example this is just hypothetically does this trade sound better to you Cody Bellinger to the Yankees for Luis Castillo that sound better M if they were to do that right that that that sounds like a pretty fair trade right you know what I mean if they were to move you know uh Castillo even if it’s Herer or whatever it is the point I’m trying to make is if they go get another guy it’s an indirect trade um and I think it’s gonna make sense so you know we’ll see do you think they might actually add an impactful offensive piece cuz I don’t even know the candidates it really would have to be a name that secret after listening to Jed this morning um or this afternoon he he he endorsed Shaw he didn’t say it was Shaw’s job he just said he’s gonna get a good long look there but I think he kind of has to say that because if he doesn’t then everyone knows he’s trying to trade niik Herer and play sha second so yeah plus they’re gonna add some insurance anyway the the next guy that I Target is is what are they doing with NI horer is that officially off the table because if that’s if that’s off the table then I have a hard time envisioning them adding another guy I think they’re going to add a third basem for Matt Shaw Insurance just in case that doesn’t go well which we’ve talked about but that’s not going to cause cost you a significant amount of money no um so I I think they’re GNA do that like a stop Gap type guy but um yep I would I don’t think that’s what you mean by significant no no I don’t I don’t so it would ni Herer is the next guy what what do we start hearing about the Rumblings maybe hopefully post holidays because I could use a little breather um well and I I get Alex bregman is unsigned but I really think in terms of that level of commitments I think they want to give that to Kyle Tucker I do so that’s a beautiful Point uh and I was gonna save that for our first show that we tried this this evening H is that let’s say the Cubs really don’t pay let’s say they really are under the tax like like a lot you know maybe they’re starting to think about because Kyle Tucker today and we’ll talk about this maybe another time he sure didn’t poo poo any extension talks um he sounded pretty hey let’s see what happens and I get that he has to say it but I thought there was a little bit extra involved in there and if the Cubs really like him and he gets off to a good start we saw Jed do an inseason extension with hap albeit you know way less money like $350 million dollar less maybe that’s something that’s on their mind hey think so we we have a guy that we really want to build around for the next five six seven years and so you know we feel like we could we could really take care of him so we’re gonna clear this money and that’s going to be something about our bigger plan there’s there’s a lot to go on it’s you got to think what one thing I’ve learned about having this show is that you can’t yes what have you learned having this show you got to really take a second look at all the options no nobody gets more angry and frustrated with this group of guys than me folks uh I I think I’m the quickest one to get really upset so if I’m not upset I I think it’s safe to say that you know things are okay I mean I I mean I went off on half in April last year I sparked his his rally I mean he got really hot um so you know just let it breathe be excited and this is gonna be a um it’s gonna be a fun Year we’re gonna have a fun year and uh I’m excited coming up next let’s just do a quick update on Jesus losardo stay tuned this episode is brought to you by FanDuel get ready to tackle the NFL action with FanDuel America’s number one sports book on FanDuel last night the Vikings closed as only seven-point favorites against the bearers who for the second straight week did not show up ready to play American football um this is a a dumpster fire more with FanDuel an official Sportsbook partner of the NFL all right I do think the next move I’m I’m not going to to move off my prediction from our first episode this week I do think the Cubs are going to acquire Jesus lazardo this week uh there’s multiple reporters in on that now they’re local guys so I think there’s even more momentum as opposed to like a national uh reporters that are in on that I think that it’s happening at the local level means that you know this is getting closer and closer uh Jesus lazardo makes your rotation better and I would venture to say with him at 100% it makes it a lot better you know this is almost Sam I was thinking of it the other day like a garri crochet light someone who has injury history but has a tremendous ceiling that if and when healthy he boost your rotation and could even perhaps take it to that next level so I do think they’re going to get that done I think it’s gonna happen before the holidays I think it might happen the next couple of days wow and wow has Jed Hoyer answered the question of are the Cubs going to be one of the more active teams in Via trade yes gar crochet light is a nice way to describe it um I I’m interested on that it it it that that’s interesting because if they do sign lazardo which we’ve talked about that’s another really cheap acquisition so it’s like you know and we just talked about so then what because now you’re start now you’re you’re starter you mentioned this on our first show that no one will ever see um that their starting rotation right now is projected like 19th in a lot of numbers if they add losardo it goes all the way to 10th so that’ll solve that’ll solve that problem for now um so so then what because that only is going to add let’s say they let’s say they trade triantos and you know somebody for him that’s GNA add what six and a half million to your table yeah I mean MLB trade rumors projects lasardo at six so six so then they go from 50 to 44 yeah and so and then like you said so it’s really that you still have 34 left yeah yeah yeah hi Tanner Scott look um I know I know that the Dodgers are a great team and that gives you a great opportunity but we don’t have a great history of closur here two great years you could be one of the best to ever doing it um you know it’s been a while and uh you know do you want to discuss further wow uh hey you know Mr Yates you know oh they’re offering you one year nine we’ll make it 11 hop on over absolutely and then of course you have the possible surprise around convention time of a certain Japanese right-hander yeah I don’t see that that’s that I haven’t heard a lot of great with that be fun though oh first of all and that would add no money to the table too right it’s a it’s a complete bonus I’ll tell you this say what you want about Jed Hoyer and and he deserves a lot of praise and criticism at the same time man it’s almost like he thrives when he’s got no money to spend I mean he really knows how to trade and and and and pull this and this and hey Kyle Tucker’s only 16 mil Bellinger out this hey we got Boyd hey that Boyd contract by the way all of a sudden you see what these guys are getting it doesn’t even look that bad our next episode will be live 7 PM Central on Wednesday what we call the lock on Cubs holiday party it’ll be our third annual listeners Shuffle in and out of our of our show as a gonna come on again uh to report some holiday party Jo join us folks yes absolutely all right Cubs trade Cody Bellinger and cash uh to the Yankees for Cody potit and probably could do a Cody potit
