[Music] welcome everyone to the MonDay edition of fair territory a special LIVE edition on this day the day after Juan stto signed his incredible 15-year $765 million deal with the New York Mets this all happened I don’t know about 12 hours ago whatever it was I’ve lost count okay but it was tough for me to sleep last night this thing was that electrifying and we knew it was coming we knew the deal was going to be over 700 we knew it was going to be massive and still when it went down what a story what a story and so many Ripple effects we’re going to get into them all on this show today it’s just something to behold frankly a Monumental deal in the sports history obviously the biggest deal in the sports history the biggest deal in professional sports history so let’s start with how it came together now we have a story in the athletic that I did in combination with Patrick Mooney will salmon and Brendan cudy this morning inside the deal and we put it together obviously as quickly as we could and one of the points in the story was that this was The Perfect Storm now you’ve heard this before and it’s true Soto a 26-year-old free agent a once-in-a-lifetime hitter we’ve seen what he has done he is an amazing amazing hitter okay that’s one thing then you had the teams that were involved the Mets with the richest owner in the sports Steve Cohen the Yankees with an owner house steinbruner who was under extreme pressure from his fan base to try to keep a player the team had traded for the previous offseason the Red Sox a team that had suddenly snapped to attention after being somewhat dormant in recent years recent offseasons the Dodgers who somehow are always lurking in these things and the Blue Jays A Team desperate to make a mark you had all that and you also had and we’ll talk about this guy more later Scott Boris at age 72 still going strong coming off a difficult off season for him and back with this guy that he has waited for a guy who turned down 440 million from the Nationals just two years ago well guess what he goes to free agency he ends up beating the Nationals deal by 300 $25 million the aav is 51 million that is far greater than the Nationals offered him Juan sto as I wrote last night he essentially bet on himself and won he knew who he was Boris knew who he was and that is why this deal ultimately came together it was indeed a perfect storm now to talk about the teams involved we’ll start with the two that were the most in the mix at the end it seems the Mets and the Yankees the two New York teams and this was one of the Dynamics again that made this such an unusual situation such a dramatic situation and such a lucrative situation for Juan stto if you remember going back to Aaron judge the Mets did not get involved for Aaron judge he was a homegrown Yankee and Steve Cohen for whatever reason deferred to the Yankees on that one well the Yankees end up resigning judge for nine years 360 million that’s less than half of what Soto got by the way they end up resigning him and then of course the stto situation arises this time Cohen did not defer and for the Mets the Perpetual little brothers in the New York baseball Wars this is just a Monumental moment this is the moment when they stepped up and kind of stood up to the big boy Yankees and said uhuh we’re not taking it anymore and I know it’s just a contract it’s nothing that has happened on the field the Mets still have not won a World Series since 1986 the Mets still have a long way to go this off season but for them wow what a moment now also I want to make this point as well and I’ll get into how this affects the entire sport later but you’ll probably hear some owners squawk about this deal that’s my guess someone’s G to pop off and say oh my gosh Steve Cohen is ruining the sport uh well guess what owners you guys were the ones who approved Steve Cohen he’s worth 21.3 billion at last check by Forbes Magazine and he’s a guy that you knew you had to know was going to come in and spend in a way that perhaps no other owner has spent before that is exactly what he has done so if the owners don’t like this that’s on them shouldn’t have approved the guy all right now let’s get to the Mets the details of where this is the deal itself as we said 15 years 765 million a $75 million signing bonus no deferrals so the aav in present day value is pretty far above shoh otani’s 51 million versus about 46 million and on top of all that you have an opt out after five years but one that the Mets can avoid they can avoid it by raising his average annual value from 51 million to 55 million for the final 10 years of the deal now as I wrote this morning I have two columns up right now one from last night on stto and how he knew what he was doing all along and this one about how this deal might age now we don’t know how it’s going to age and right now it is the least of the Mets worries and the least of their fans worries but what’s going to be interesting is if stto has what we all expect five brilliant years then he can become a free agent again entering his age 31 season and I expect he would want to do that and the Mets are going to face this decision do you raise the salary or do you let him go because you’ve probably gotten his best years age 31 to 40 that’s an area where some players remain great I mentioned Paul Moler I mentioned Edgar Martinez I mentioned David Ortiz and then you have players who we’ve seen decline sharply in their mid-30s guys like Miguel Cabrera Albert phol Ken Griffey Jr and going back further if you want to look at guys who could do it and stained it until 40 Hank Aaron and a player to whom Juan stto is often compared Ted Williams again all this is a problem down the line if it’s a problem at all in the present what do the Mets have to do they have to keep going they have to maximize what they have here they’ve got Juan sto man they’ve got Juan sto at least for the next five years he is we all know a generational hitter and if you’ve got him you’ve got a surround them with talent and one of the concerns that stto might have had with the Mets is where’s the protection where’s my Aaron judge now there’s only one Aaron judge he was not going to get an Aaron judge situation unless he went to the Dodgers with Otani mie and Freddy Freeman the Mets right now do not have pet Alonzo they’re going to need to do some more things here for one they’re going to need to sign another starting pitcher and sha andai I expect would be in their mix at some point and he’s a guy that probably won’t require as long a deal as Max freed or Corbin Burns and the Mets do not seem to like long-term deals for pitchers that’s not a David Sterns thing it’s thing that a lot of teams don’t particularly like so that’s one thing I expect them to do they’ve got to address first base whether it’s Alonzo or whether it’s Christian Walker or whether it’s Alex bregman and maybe moving Vientos over to First you can do it in any number of ways and at that point the bullpen becomes a priority as well well Tanner Scott is still out there Jeff Hoffman is still out there there are a number of relievers still out there and the Mets are going to need to obviously address that group at some point they’re going to need to supplement the bullpen again this is a rare opportunity that they’ve given themselves by signing stto and you cannot simply say as some fear the Yankees might if they had signed stto well that’s all we’re going to do we can’t do anymore we’ve just committed 765 l no doesn’t work like that you sign this guy you got to keep going you got to surround them with the best talent you can you’ve got to take your best shot in these next five years and then you can figure out the rest with stto later all right now what about the Yankees the Yankees bid for stto was very close to the Mets at least in terms of total value 760 million for 16 years now the aav was not up against the Mets level it was not but it was only a $5 million difference and many of us suspected that if the Yankees stayed close to the Mets if they gave Soto a reasonably close offer to what the Mets were going to put together that he would stay with the Yankees he certainly was happy with the Yankees happy with his teammates happy with the staff happy with manager Aaron Boon he wanted a little bit closer relationship with h Stein brener like gar Cole had like Aaron judge has but he was certainly going to get that if he had signed with the Yankees signed back with them didn’t happen ultimately no one knew going into this thing what Soto’s preferences were our suspicion was he wanted the biggest deal the most money that’s how it turned out because if he wanted to be a Yankee if that was his thing if he wanted to stay with judge for at least the next seven years while judge is still under contract he could have done that still could have gotten a great deal probably could have negotiated the Yankees up a little bit right but as you see here what Andy Martino wrote Yankees were in the lead for stto all through the process through the weekend in the late afternoon yesterday but steeve Cohen came from the top rope very late and got it done I’m not sure that’s exactly how it went down but that’s a perception that certainly can exist after what happened and for the Yankees not to get this guy as Joel Sherman in the New York Post wrote this morning very stutely as he always does hey halstein brener is going to take heat again yes he he got up in the 700s he got up in the high 700s but he didn’t get his man so for the Yankees this is a really difficult moment it’s a difficult moment because they lost this great player to the Mets of course something that I don’t believe has ever happened in the history of these two teams rivalry no great Yankee free agent have ever gone to the Mets just doesn’t happen and beyond that their team without stto well they’ve got some work to do too they’ve got a lot of work to do you look at the Yankees roster without stto one thing they need certainly is an outfielder and tasar Hernandez Anthony sand are the two best guys out there right now I expect the Yankees to get in the mix for them but both those guys are going to get attention elsewhere Tasco Hernandez I still expect to sign back with the Dodgers that’s his preference they’re going to have to pay now a little bit more than they would have liked to because the Yankees are going to be in the Red Sox are going to be in the Blue Jays Hernandez’s old team are going to be in but I still expect that that is where this is going to land but the Yankees have some other needs as well first base Anthony Rizzo free agent they’re not bringing him back maybe the Yankees sign Alonzo as their kind of pay back to the Mets if you want to consider it that or maybe they sign Christian Walker they can also use maybe a third baseman Alex bregman would be a good fit you can put Jazz at second maybe even in the Outfield if you want to play Chad Durban at second the rookie you can do a lot of different things but they’re going to be active now they’re going to have to be active the other thing they need quite clearly is Bullpen help and again Tanner Scott Jeff Hoffman still out there others as well Klay Holmes is gone so they’ve got to replace him and then you can look at the rotation now their rotation is still kind of a strength of this team but at the same time you can look at it and say you really want to strengthen the club what’s the best way to do it go get a Corbin Burns go get a freed go trade for Gary crochet I don’t know that the Yankees have enough for crochet at least compared to the other teams involved it’s going to take big-time young position players to get crochet that’s the price that’s what it’s going to be the Yankees might want to do that but they might be topped as well Burns and freed they’re going to get a lot of attention elsewhere too JS to put a monster offer together for burns I expect freed to get a lot of play as well he’s a guy that the sock are going to want actually Burns is too it’s not going to be easy to get the pitching that the Yankees might want but they’re going to scramble now they’re going to have to Pivot and I would expect these pivots that we’re talking about not just with the Yankees but with the Red Sox and all these other clubs they’re going to be happening quickly I expect these winter meetings which begin officially today and last through Wednesday are going to be quite Lively so the Yankees have some work to do here and once they get through it it well we’ll see where they are and maybe you could say well they didn’t want want soda for all that length of time no no no no no no one’s saying that the Yankees wanted him back the Yankees fans wanted him back and right now it’s a blow to all those parties involved to house steinbrener to the Yankees front office to the Yankees Clubhouse to the Yankees fan base it’s a difficult moment when you lose your best player the guy you traded for gave up quite a bit for it to the cross town rival Mets all right today there’s only one thing to go inside it’s more on the WAN sto deal I want to start off this segment by talking about Scott Boris and showing you where he is at this off season already it’s December 9th this sucker is not dragging into February and March like it did last year for Boris he is active he is getting things done and he has already cut more than a billion dollars worth of deals of course Boris with SoDo at 765 that’s a big chunk of that but let’s show you just where this stands right now for Scott Boris because it’s kind of amazing how quickly this has all happened in a relative sense all right you see it right there the Scott Boris revenge tour that’s what I’ve been calling it Juan stto 765 million Blake Snell 182 us Kikuchi 63 Tyler O’Neal 49.5 Matthew boy 29 Nick Martinez 21.05 Michael conforto signed last night with the Dodgers 17 the total 1.13 billion and you see right there still to come Corbin Burns Alex Bergman Alex bregman excuse me Pete Alonzo sha manah and hashan Kim all of those players are represented by Scott Boris he has a few others as well he’s going to sign deals this off season maybe he will turn out to to be his richest off season ever it’s been quite something to see so far he will tell you as he did last year that what happens is he reacts to the market and last year’s Market wasn’t as good we could argue about this all day I’ve said that many times before whether his strategizing last year was not as effective as it might have been but the bottom line is he’s back in the Scot Boris revenge tour Scott I know you don’t like me calling it that I’m guessing you don’t like me calling that well it could be the Taylor Swift ear tour of Major League Baseball all right with that I want to get into some of the losers of the stto sweep sticks we talked about the Yankees in the first segment let’s now talk about the three other teams that were in the mix here let’s start with the Red Sox really interesting are this is a team gave up mie bets years ago because they didn’t want to pay him and yet they’re willing to offer Juan SoDo seemingly almost twice as much as mie Betts got well maybe they’ve learned their lesson but we’ve seen the Red Sox over the years they’ve kind of I don’t know pingpong from one strategy to the next they’re back in spending mode now that’s a good thing for the Red Sox I never thought SoDo was the greatest fit in the sense that okay he’s a great player of course he’s a great fit but they already are deep in left-handed hitting they’re fine there they’ve got outfielders what they need is starting pitching and what the Red Sox should do now in my opinion and this will hurt John Henry because he doesn’t like doing this is sign one of the two big starting pitchers to a long deal he does not like long-term deal for starting pitchers that’s something that John Henry just does not want to do of course they got burned by sale in their estimation that was a five-year deal Burns is probably going to get more than that freed might too but at the same time that is the Red Sox biggest need it’s on the mound it’s an ace you do that you trade for crochet and they do have the young position talent to get G crochet whether it’s aru whether it’s casus whether it’s mayor whether it’s some combination of these players or others they have the guys they can get G well to me it makes a lot of sense now I know it’s been reported they have been on the periphery of the crochet sweep Stakes not at the Forefront well maybe get at the Forefront because that’s what they need in addition to Bullpen help like every team the Red Sox again their biggest area to improve would be on the mount and if they can do that with all these young kids coming with the talent that they already have at the major league level it’s going to be quite an interesting team another idea for them and I’ve written about this would be to sign bregman move Des to first put casses in the crochet deal or some other deal all of these things should be in play for them they should have money to burn after of course making that pursuit of Juan sto and of course they also want a right-handed hitter whether it’s bregman whether it’s t osar Hernandez whether it’s someone else maybe two of those guys they are heavily left-handed they are very heavily left-handed and SoDo would have made them even more heavily left-handed and they don’t have to worry about that now the Dodgers now the Dodgers are coming off a world series title we reported this morning in our story that went inside the deal that their offer was 600 million they knew that that wasn’t going to get it done but they were kind of doing what they always do hanging around the backboard see if an opportunity presents itself an opportunity didn’t present itself I don’t know that they expected it to with the other teams in the mix but clearly at this point what they’ve done besides Snell is agree with Blake Tran on a two-year deal and agree with Michael conforto left-handed hitting outfielder on the one-year deal good so far so good they’re also pursuing other relievers Tanner Scott is on their list a trade for Devin Williams is something else they might do and of course as I said said earlier in the show I do expect them to resign tasar Hernandez three-year deal somewhere in the mid-60s that’s kind of where I think this is going you never know in free agency and certainly one of those other teams the Red Sox the Blue Jays the Yankees might blow teoscar away but he has been very adamant in saying he wants to be a Dodger I expect him to be a Dodger and finally the Blue Jays now I’ve seen some chatter from Blue Jays fans on X and wherever else about how they think I hate not only the Blue Jays but hate the entire country of Canada all right I love Canada first of all and I don’t hate the Blue Jays what I do hate and fans often mistake my disdain for certain things with hate but it’s not a team itself I don’t like the way the bluejs have been run just as I don’t like the way the Pirates have been run the Marlins and a number of other teams we could sit here and name now the Blue Jays I said this before I found it curious that they were targeting stto in the way that they were at a time when they haven’t signed Vladimir Guerrero Jr to an extension or Bo bashet now bashet might be the odd man out here ultimately and maybe Guerrero goes too I would expect him to at least test the market he’s one year away and Juan stto just signed for 765 million but the Jays because they’ve got a weak farm system not the greatest major leue roster and the potential for Guerrero and bashet to leave it just never made sense to me that they were so deep in on stto I have thought perhaps they should retool almost like the Cardinals are doing right now I don’t know that there’s any guarantee that they’re going to keep Guerrero or bashet I don’t expect them to keep either quite frankly so here they are they’ve still got money to burn and they’ve got a front office led by Mark shapy and Ross Atkins that is perhaps in Jeopardy certainly facing a reckoning of sorts with their franchise they’re going to want to do something big and maybe they get one of the big starting pitchers but the Jays to me are still not at the level where they should be they should be doing other things to bring in even more young Talent they acquired some at the deadline and they’re pretty high on those guys they’re pretty high on some of their other young position players but I just am not in love with where they are so I don’t hate the Jays I don’t hate any team I certainly don’t hate the country of Canada in fact I love the country of Canada so that’s where we are with that the Red Sox the Dodgers the Blue Jays as well as the Yankees they’re The Losers of the stto sweep stakes and as I said earlier those teams are all going to need to Pivot quickly and they’re going to need to react to what just happened because the market is not going to wait for them all right time now for grilling Ken this is the part of the show ah there it is where I answer your question let’s start with this one here’s a topic that yes we want to cover curious to hear Ken’s thoughts about Dave Parker and Dick Allen being elected to the Hall of Fame Dick Allen I love that he’s in the Hall of Fame he was a guy who was kind of ahead of his time in the way he conducted himself out and off the field he was a guy who spoke his mind and that’s something that’s more accepted today than it was then certainly from a black player and this guy encountered racism encountered a lot of things and was a great player a great hitter for sure so Dick Allen a lot of people have felt for a long time this was overdue I would agree with that Dave Parker was more borderline never did too well on the writers ballot his Peak You could argue wasn’t long enough Jay jaffy who writes that great series for Fang graphs never thought of Parker as one of the guys who would be knocking on the door for Cooper toown but that said those of us who remember Dave Parker who watched the cobra in action who saw his at the plate his amazing arm in right field I don’t have a problem with Dave Parker in the Hall of Fame he wasn’t maybe the classic Hall of Fame profile statistically but he was famous and sometimes I think we lose a little bit of that when we talk about Hall of Fame and focus so much on the numbers that’s what we’re supposed to do that’s what this is about of course but Dave Parker was a prominent force in that sport in our sport for quite some time and you talk about his teammates and you saw those quotes from Dennis Eckersley perhaps last night on Parker very effusive so Dave Parker I’m good with that I would have also like to have seen Luis tion in and one of the Negro League players get in as well perhaps next time for them all right next question this one comes from Thomas gavan a frequent questioner here he said what a crazy contract for stto is the next player to surpass that Mark currently in the minors or majors in your mind Bobby wit JR could have had he waited until free agency to sign maybe good point on Whit Jr and he’s the guy I thought of of course he signed an 11year 287 $88 million extension with the Kansas City Royals he would have been a free agent after his age 27 season entering his age I’m sorry yes entering his age 28 year so I don’t know that he would have gotten the deal stto would have I ultimately got but wit Jr was a still relatively young player would have been in free agency an up the-middle player certainly defensively much better than stto he could have been the guy the other one I thought of is gunar Henderson now gunar Henderson like wit Jr High School draft Soto of course entered the majors at age 19 these guys have to get in the mix at a young age to become a young free agent and it’s only possible if you’re a high school draft Gunner will be a free agent after his age 26 Season so he’ll be a free agent entering his age 27 campaign that’s pretty young but I don’t know that he’ll be as accomplished as Whit junor is going to be and even if he is I still don’t know if that’s going to be the sto level that said by the time this happens with Gunner and with any other young player at that level who’s going to be a free agent then we should have a new labor agreement expires after 26 we should have new National Television contracts and presumably the local te TV Revenue issues that some teams face are are going to be settled and more clear by then as well so financially the sport figures to be in an even stronger position and that will only help the next wave of players but it seems to me it doesn’t happen often when you get a Ted Williams type hitter enter the major leagues at age 19 and then dominate become a free agent entering his age 26 Season that’s Juan stto that’s the profile you need for this kind of deal and I don’t see any current player in the majors or minors being that guy all right final question this one comes from Robbie J he asked Ken how can fans of small Market teams have hope and no I don’t buy that some teams just choose not to spend you can’t expect deficit spending why is baseball the only sport without extensive Revenue sharing for all dollars including media deals all right there’s a lot of questions here I’ll try to get to them as soon as or as best as I can as for the way the revenue is shared it’s different than the NFL because this sport is locally based as far as the television packages are concerned as opposed to nationally based which is what the NFL has with CBS with Fox with NBC with all of their different partners that’s where the bulk of the money comes from there are no local telecasts in the NFL in baseball it’s different now yes there are national TV contracts we all know that and that money is shared but the different Market sizes produce different amounts of Revenue and that’s changing all the time as we enter or as we are in the cord cutting era now do small Market teams have hope it’s tough and I’ve spoken about this on foul territory and on Fair territory the disparity between the halves and the Have Nots is getting wider and yes there are some small Market teams that can spend more we all agree on that but there are resources involved here and I don’t disagree with what the person asked there you can’t expect people to just spend and spend and spend and deficit spend that way so this is something that’s going to come up in the next CBA it’s something that’s going to be quite contentious it’s something that could lead to a lockout if that happened that would be the dumbest thing this sport could do we’re in the middle of something of a Renaissance here but at the same time it wouldn’t shock me if this have versus have not situation that we’re in now becomes even more I don’t know thorny I guess would be one word to use I’m trying to think of a better word but I don’t have one anyway I’m want to thank everyone for watching I want to thank everyone for listening you know where to find us YouTube Apple Spotify I will be back Thursday with Alana Rizzo with our normal live show we’ll be back on all of our normal places to find us I want to thank you for one again great time this morning just talking to you about the WAN sto deal I can talk about it another half hour but sorry man we got to go [Music]
