this is the Brian Kelly press conference presented by the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation I just thought we were simpler I think we had five calls on defense and we ran some pass plays multiple times that really helped our players stay locked in on the call and be committed to the call as the Tigers finish out the regular season hosting the Sooners for the first time as a member of the SEC on a Saturday night in Death Valley give the ball right back to Williams side steps gets free inside the 15 the 10 the five and carries a commodor into the end zone touchdown fighting tigers coming up coach Kelly discusses this week’s preparation and practice but first from the capital 1 Studios inside Legendary Tiger Stadium here are your hosts former tiger Gordy rush and the voice of your fighting tigers Chris Blair Good Monday morning tiger fans yes indeed it’s a holiday week final regular season game of 2024 coming up LSU in Oklahoma well when you look back at the past matchups it’s been uh well Stakes have been pretty high when the Sooners and tigers get together and uh you know you can make an argument that both programs where they are here in 2024 this one’s a pretty big game uh for the future and headed into 2025 but nonetheless it should be a great atmosphere Oklahoma LSU just after 6 o’ kicking off at Legendary Tiger Stadium and before we get to that Gordy Rush uh you know coming off a solid win 2417 over uh as we said last week we said multiple times during the broadcast and maybe even more so once we saw Vandy on the field uh you know not not your daddy’s Vanderbilt not your older brother’s Vanderbilt uh a team that had plenty of Moxy and um again a very good Vanderbuilt team that LSU gets the win over and and the funny thing was it was a seven-point win I know LSU had a two-score lead late and Vandy got the touchdown made some plays uh got the fake Punt and then the big pass play to set them up eventually for the score but and I could be wrong a lot of people probably disagree it just never felt like after Midway through the third quarter that that the game was in question I know it was because mistakes could have led to to disaster but it really felt like LSU the way they played the way they fought the way they performed they were going to win that game yeah 100% LSU was in in control of that football game I thought defensively they did an outstanding job after that first play of making an adjustment and and really uh defending this triple option offense that Jerry kill and Tim back with had brought in from New Mexico State Diego Pavia was as advertised he was a competitor he was fun to watch and uh look this this Vanderbilt team had 51 new players from a year ago uh what a job Clark Lee’s done it they had lost to Texas by three points it’s Texas’s best win year to date they beat Alabama they they they beat an Auburn team of course we know what Auburn did last weekend so this is a good win and and it was a step in the right direction yeah I mean because I think if you just look at the way LSU played forget about who they’re playing and forget about the final score there were things we saw on Saturday in All Phases that really had been lacking and and coach talked about it before the game he talked about it after there were things that LSU did that were more like what we saw through the first six weeks than we have over the previous three yeah look I I think there’s a lot of things that can be said about simplifying and and you’ve heard Jacob and I talk about the last three football games some through the losing streak at times off defensively it it was a little too much it it didn’t flow you didn’t see the Rhythm in offense saw the Rhythm in offense as coach said they simplified their end with less Concepts I I thought Garrett got the ball back from the quarterback from the center much quicker it didn’t go as deep in in the play clock I think there were less substitutions and and I think when you clear kids heads especially at the college level and you let them just go play football good things happen and that’s what they did well I know that you mentioned it a couple of times during the week you know when you look back at Garrett’s career in high school and again it’s different I understand you’re at LSU now and the competition but but that’s kind of the moving with some Tempo was kind of he’s comfortable with that he’s done that it’s not something strange and we saw a little Tempo at times in Frank in fact I was kind of impressed and and I’ve always said this a team that always goes Tempo I think can can hurt yourself again when you get in tight games but if you have the ability to slow it down when you need to and then pick up Tempo when you get some Rhythm or get them on their heels to me that’s the sign of a good team and I think LSU did that quite a bit against Vandy yeah and look and you don’t have to go race car a race car is something that we see out of old miss the old Texas Tech with Mike Leech I think just getting to the line of scrimmage not substituting right and and getting over the ball without huddling forces the defense to do two things they can’t substitute and secondly defense coordinators got to hurry up and get a call so he he can’t go as deep or as sophisticated as he wants to do so to to me you’re really dictating pace and you’re dictating the number of options they can present against you and I I think you you’re on your front foot and to me when Garrett nus is moving a little quicker he plays with much more confidence 28 of 37 again an excellent job uh of of percentage completion making the throws getting I think nine different receivers involved Aaron Anderson with another great game kyen Lacy uh had one of the touchdowns I’m going to get to Josh Williams in a moment because I think he was kind of the story of the game and deservedly so but uh the SEC honoring Will Campbell this week and and I wanted to single out will in a positive way because he was one of the vocal guys last week and we’re you know Josh was another uh veteran leaders on this team and said look this is on us we we’ got to go out and play better we got to beat the guy across from us and and will did an excellent job the running game uh credit the running backs they broke some tackles at the line and able to get positive yards but there were some holes frankly against that defensive front um that that we hadn’t seen in a while so kudos to to Will Campbell and for Garrett nus uh you know finishes now with 200 not finished yet but after Saturday 290 completions which uh makes him second in a single season behind the great Joe burrow uh who I think has 400 or some uh which will take a away to catch him but you know Garrett again this he’s finished 12 games as a starter uh 290 completions also second I believe in a single season with the tempts and when you look at the running game and you know it’s it’s interesting because when that number starts to get to four and a half five yards per carry you and I and Jacob talk about how that opens things up and again that’s not Gang Busters running the ball but that’s all LSU needs and coach Kelly has said it time and time again balance to him isn’t 150 passing 150 rushing it’s about taking what the defense gives you and when you get that opportunity get five or six yards make it second and short right absolutely and and look I thought LSU did great job on first down right and then they stayed ahead of the chams more more times than not and they kept vanderbild guessing and Garrett just did a great job of what you just said taking what the defense is was giving him and there were a lot of times and I know you’re about to do your Josh Williams discussion but there a lot of checkdowns to the running back Vanderbilt they hit a couple passes so they had to back up they play a lot of zone defense we knew that coming in and it uh it opened up the the checkdown to the running backs and and you look at it and um Josh had four receptions four big receptions for 61 yards Kaden had two those six plays again help you achieve balance yeah Josh Williams uh I’ve said it and and I know people have heard me say it’s one of the great stories in in college football uh recruited by a number of uh lower level teams uh or G5 if if we still call them that um and also was uh maybe had a chance to play another sport at the college level but said he wanted to be a tiger so he comes over he walks on he earns a scholarship think about some of the big plays not only this past Saturday B big moments that he’s given this team and and in this spot where your team is reeling three straight losses and you get a guy who is coach Kelly said after the game in his post game not only talked the talk this week but when the game started he walked the walk and I couldn’t be happier for Josh no absolutely and and and the intangibles for me is wondering how LSU was going to respond coming into Tiger Stadium it wasn’t going to be the the type of atmosphere that Alabama and Old Miss was it I’ll tell you it wasn’t that that big of a drop off early on you didn’t have you didn’t have a thousand celebrities on the sideline all that I thought the fans were outstanding considering you know the circumstances and it was Vanderbilt and they stayed throughout the game and it helped it was a beautiful night but I I think it was a game in which this team had to turn on their own internal switch and they did so they they responded from that first play the the Vanderbilt’s first offensive play in the touchdown bounce back and just took control methodically took control of the game and I think that’s great going forward into this season finale against Oklahoma 2417 LSU picks up the win over Vanderbilt they get above 500 in SEC play now 4 and3 and uh pick up their seventh win of the season they get ready for Oklahoma coming in we’re going to talk about the Sooners and coming off their signature win certainly for Coach venables with with a season that that uh some of it outside of their control some of it within their control has not been what they wanted to see for that fan base certainly in their first year in the SEC fans you can bring your best game to game day with ninjas Woodfire Grill and smoker outdoor pizza oven and frost Vault by the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation once again here are Gordy rush and Chris Blair again it will be LSU Oklahoma meeting for just the fourth time in history first time as SEC foes coming up on Saturday with kickoff just after 6:00 and I mentioned already the uh the previous history first meeting 1950 in the Sugar Bowl Oklahoma with the win 35 nothing and then they meet later in the Sugar Bowl LSU gets the win and then you and I both were uh there in Atlanta in the playoffs in 2019 where uh it was Joe burrow and Justin Jefferson and uh you know just touchdown after touchdown but uh usually big stage for these two and again I I think uh not quite th that type of stage this weekend but I think where both programs are and both coaches desperately want to build some momentum LSU certainly uh this is a big time game I mean you look at coach venables and the struggles they had tons of injuries all over the field uh guys who are being called upon a little earlier in their career to carry a heavier load for Oklahoma and just you know their second win in conference play but it comes over Alabama they hold uh the Crimson Tide to just three points which you know we’ve seen Alabama couple of weeks ago hard to imagine they’re left with just three points and this is a defensive-minded team obviously with coach venables and even though they’ve only won two conference games they’ve been in some games much like LSU unable to finish and hold on to a lead late but they’ve only given up 20 points a game on defense all season long so that’s the first thing you have to look at in this matchup that’s one of the best defenses LSU’s going to play this season put them in the class of South Carolina and Texas A&M especially their front uh their front seven is outstanding we all remember Bren venables going back he was on that 20 three staff in which LSU beat Nick Sabin was the coach here and LSU won the national championship and of course we remember he’s a defensive coordinator for Clemson in 2019 um he loves to bring pressure and uh they’re a little beat up in the second area they’ve had some guys out but you think about some of the teams that have been effective blitzing LSU I imagine he’s going to follow suit for anybody to start the first two series of the national championship playing cover zero and bringing pressure on Joe burrow he’s going to look at some film and say guns a blazing so I’m sure the coach Kelly and then Joe S there that’s what they’re expecting yeah absolutely uh offensively I mentioned uh they’ve had to use a number of guys they’ve had injuries at the wide receiver position they’ve had injuries at the quarterback position but just before we came back on you had a great Point Jackson Arnold now qb1 for Oklahoma uh thrust into action and uh you know a very good dual threat quarterback once again uh played very well running the football against Alabama this past week which by the way watching that game a lot of running back lead uh for the quarterback running which which LSU at times they did better this past week because Vandy did it too but um they’ve had struggles with that uh but Jackson Arnold as you said one of the top high school quarterbacks coming out in that class with some pretty good guys yeah Arch Manning and the quarterback up of Tennessee among some of the guys that were top three or four quarterback so um coming out of Texas very highly recruited more of a runner than a thrower right now I’m not I’m not skies at Oklahoma struggled offensively um in total yardage they’re dead last in the SEC they made a coordinator change Seth Latrell out mid-season and what they’ve done they’ve gone to more of a running offense Jackson Arnold’s been fantastic they’re without their three top receivers without two offensive linemen they’re a little bit battered on this offensive side of the football but still key number one for for LSU again like it was last week against Vander Bel is stopping the stopping the Oklahoma Run game that’s what they want to do well when you look at the Alabama and Oklahoma game they made things very difficult for Jaylen milro he made a couple of of errant throws they were able to get some takeaways there but they hold them to 74 yards rushing and that’s not only milro that’s the running backs and we know they’ve got a pretty good tandem along with milro running the football to me it comes back to what we said in the first segment which is you know we’d all love for LSU to come out and be able to line up run the football and maybe average eight nine yards per carry and break off some big plays in the running game but that’s not necessarily necessary in the matchup but you have to be able to run the ball I think maybe a little bit better than you did against Vandy it’s going to be a bigger challenge with Oklahoma’s defensive front um but but I’m sure coach Kelly’s going to talk about it you still have to be able to run the ball because they they did an excellent job taking that away from Alabama well you you can’t be baled you can’t be one-dimensional you can’t get into throwing the football because Bren venol will pin his ears back just like Alabama Texas A&M did and flat out get after Garett SM you have to be balanced look for me I I think it’s I I like the idea of going Tempo and and forcing again forcing venables to call something quick you don’t want in to sub and get the sub packages in you don’t want a lot of exotic looks I told you they they’re a little been a little thin in the secondary they’ve got some very good players back there but they’re they’re they’re a little bit thin you want to dictate what you’re doing to them I I think the balance and then wide receivers ability to get separation against the Oklahoma defensive back they’re going to have to get open last week against Vanderbilt you got a lot of Zone look I think you’re going to see a little bit more manto man this week we looked at the uh game film for Oklahoma and Alabama we noticed that again Oklahoma had a lot more success running the ball and Arnold was a big part of that at quarterback just a handful of passes attempted defensively for LSU I I thought they did a great job kudos to Braden Swinson uh who not only I I think you know I think he finished with four tackles was in on a sack and a tackle for loss but the three quarterback hurries I mean he he changed the arm slot and he changed the direction of the football for Pavia just by being there pressure-wise your thoughts on the secondary for LSU obviously there was a huge bust to start the game there was one that led to that uh touchdown late for Vanderbilt but but I don’t know how much they’re going to be tested from start to finish but goodness knows you can’t afford any bust because you got to let the defensive front shut down the Run game but then don’t let them pull one and and get a receiver behind the defense yeah and we’ll you know be interesting their top their their top three receivers are questionable and we’ll see if they’ll be back this week they did not play uh last week against Alabama and of course they only completed nine passes look I I thought the secondary was better and again the big thing is playing your responsibility making sure that that you’re filling your Gap and the Run slots are great because it is a it can be triple option and you got to account for the quarterback in this game but it’s eliminating the big negative play plays the ones that hurt you against Florida I thought the defense for the most part played well against Florida but it was the bus plays they cleaned up there was only one on the double move in which uh both the quarterback and the safety were not on the same same page if you clean that up play responsibility football and get after Jackson Arnold the same way you got after Pavia I should be a good night for alisu again it will be a six o’clock kickoff Oklahoma and LSU and and I think the atmosphere will be there it’s a it’s a Thanksgiving weekend uh I know a lot of family and town a lot of people will be traveling but it’s Oklahoma and LSU and this is the first time the Sooners have come to Tiger Stadium so I think the atmosphere will be there uh but regardless I’m sure coach Kelly and the team will will work to ramp up uh the team be ready to go when they come out of the shoot on Saturday night real quick as we wait for coach Kelly to arrive to the podium you mentioned it earlier what a what another crazy weekend it was in the SEC and I and I pulled up this morning the standings you know uh Georgia punches their ticket now it looks like Texas and Texas A&M that game’s going to indicate who gets to Atlanta uh but I don’t know how long the SEC wants to have to crunch these numbers at the end of the year whether or not we add another conference game or whether we go back to divisions I mean this thing is is is nuts and and it’s not just the SEC a lot of conferences in the same shape a lot of conferences with especially the SEC I think when you you’ve got as much balance right now everybody’s making the same TV check everybody has great facilities now Vanderbilt has 51 new players and in what what Vanderbilt era do you remember remember the the quarterback and tight end coming over from New Mexico state of all places I mean there’s no great teams there are no bad teams and I think everybody’s kind of bunched together and I will say this I think HomeField Advantage is even more important to me in this day and age than it was five years ago I agree with you I agree with you we’ll see you Saturday have a good Thanksgiving with the family let’s go to football Ops here’s head coach Brian Kelly um let’s do our best to uh come up with your best today um you’re under scrutiny with my family members here today so I’ve made many remarks about this is the best Media Group in the country so come through today there’s some pressure on you okay I know how that’s going to go with you C so could be rough yeah no doubt all right well we’ll start off with uh just a recap of uh Saturday’s game against Vanderbilt um certainly um was happy for our players uh and their um their resolve um their their ability to bounce back whatever you want to say relative to um you know their their mindset I think is what I was most uh proud of and and how they thought about the week the game uh and and they played very well um Garrett nesm played his best game in the year um we were balanced on offense we had one negative play whereas the week before we had we had 14 negative plays um we were much more efficient on first down uh which led to very favorable second down situations for us so it it just it it um it played itself out well from an offensive standpoint with balance and running the football Josh Williams was um you know standing in that game catching the football out of the back field blocking uh running the football with um with a great demeanor um Will Campbell was outstanding U played his best game uh individually on the offensive line uh and we got other really good performances um I thought DJ Chester probably played his best game of the year so all in all from that perspective on the offense and then defensively um you know we had one Misfit on a run play where where they were able to um get an explosive play and then you know we had a chance to to make a play on a pass down the field where um you know we were in cover twoo we just didn’t make the play so a couple of explosive plays but really did a nice job uh controlling the flow of the game limiting uh pavia’s um production and um again I I I think going against the team that’s well coached and um had a you know really good win against Alabama Obama um were pleased with with the outcome so um you know looking back at it you know Kaden Duran leads all freshman in the SEC with rushing you know we’ve got three players with over 50 receptions um nus is uh second in the SEC in passing touchdowns total offense and and touchdowns and you know uh I know it it’s not sometimes you you you look at some of the sexier uh stats but Damen Romo Ramos set a School record for consecutive Pats now at 121 um and and that should not get uh overlooked so um a much needed win but but a uh a win that that our players really took full accountability during the week um LED and and when you have a team that that leads from the inside out um you know you see that performance on the field so we’ll continue to work on that this week uh and look to duplicate that against uh an Oklahoma team coming off a great win against Alabama this is their first game in Tiger stadium um and and a team that um you know presents uh a number of different challenges you know they ran the ball extremely well this past weekend um Jackson Arnold I think as an outstanding quarterback he can throw it but but uh rush for 107 yards and two touch Downs excuse me rush for 131 yards on 25 carries so you know I think everybody here knows uh our history with the quarterbacks that that run the football that will be a challenge for us um you know they they have an offensive line that uh is coming together and and a defense that as you know coach venables uh is the longtime defensive coordinator at Clemson before he became the head coach at Oklahoma uh and just does a great job I’ve got a chance to go against him several times at clemon and they mix things up they make things complicated um they give you a multitude of different looks uh it’s a good front Danny stman is an All-American linebacker um so this would be a great way to finish off the regular season with a team that’s coming in off of a great win both teams looking to finish the season strong so with that we’ll open up the questions coach right here you mentioned after the game on Saturday that you saw a lot of maturity from the younger players can you talk a little bit about that andine just what does it mean to have a guy like Josh Williams and Will Campbell and these guys whove really kind of set the tone in how important that is going forward for this program yeah look as I said right you know when when players decide that they’re going to lead from the inside out it’s also about you know those actions become mirror actions for the younger players they see how that’s done you know so when you get uh a trade as green or you get a Kaden Durham uh and and they see how that’s done that modeling takes effect and and you could see that you know through the week um you know you you there are times where you wish that happened earlier right where those guys got up and and and were vocal but um I think they were growing and learning as well in terms of how to be leaders but uh clearly when when you have veterans like that step up it affects the younger players because they see how it’s done and and they want it to be uh recognized as well so uh their efforts um were recognized by the way that they practiced this past week hey coach what uh defensive challenges does Oklahoma present especially after this last game how they shut down Alabama yeah so you know they’re they have a new offensive coordinator as you know um they made a change at the offensive coordinator position earlier in the year and and it really changed the Dynamics of the offense the offense is now it was averaging close to 85 90 plays a game I think they’ve had 62 plays their last two games uh so it is a ball control offense uh Jackson Arnold is an outstanding quarterback he can throw it extremely well but this is now much more about controlling the football running the football playing with physicality they’ve got perimeter um skill uh but I think it’s centered around much more of a run Centric quarterback run um and and take care of the football uh they had turned it over quite a bit uh I think they they might have been near the bottom of the the country in terms of fumbles uh and and so I think they wanted to clean that up and and so you’re seeing a much more controlled offensive structure now than you did earlier in the year uh hey coach uh we saw Harold Perkins at the game on Saturday just curious if there’s an update on kind of his recovery and if maybe there’s been any conversations about what his future could look like yeah I mean he’s doing really well in his recovery talking to Owen Stanley our our uh athletic trainer um he’s been um you know he’s been in the building quite a bit um you know now that he’s passed the you know the early stages uh of the repair uh now it’s about hard work um I don’t know that he’s made that final decision I know he’s weighing the options and and clearly um we would love to have him back um but we know that you know those decisions are not easy we’ll support him in whatever he decides uh and provide him all the resources necessary to make the best decision for him and his family you mentioned the job DJ did and will what went right in the Run game was it that as well as just winning those one-on-one battles between a running back back and a linebacker safety well I think the quarterback it starts with the quarterback um the ability to get us the favorable looks that gave the offensive line um you know the numbers right where we could run combination blocks where we could get leverage where we could get some of the things necessary to have you know a more consistent running game and and it starts with the quarterback quite frankly when when you’re in a one-back offense you have to be able to do that and and I thought Garrett was outstanding it was his best game by far and and look you know you call a run play the numbers aren’t right the ball goes out to an Aaron Anderson uh he’s going to make two or three people Miss that’s really a run call um but the numbers weren’t right we’re out on the perimeter when they were right we were able to run the football up into favorable numbers and now those guys can effectively do the things that their coach to do uh pull Gap combination block leverage and we saw that on display in its best form against Vanderbilt hey coach after the game you said you only used a handful of coverages on defense and uh you ran the same pass play a couple of times what what was the thinking early in the week about simple flying things maybe I think it went with the whole theme of what the week was about and and that was players taking ownership and coaches putting our players in the best position to succeed so we didn’t have um execution mistakes and and as I think we all know um sometimes in my career I’ve I’ve always looked at if there’s a lot of mistakes there might be too much information you might be doing a little bit too much so we simplified some things um felt like we put our players in a really good position to succeed and sometimes um what goes hand inand with that is simplifying some things now obviously you can’t talk about recruits by name but y’all have taken a quarterback in each of the last two classes now that you don’t have one committed just kind of what’s your plan at that position over the next few Cycles maybe to build on that spot yeah I think we’ll always look at taking a quarterback each year and and we’ll most likely take a quarterback again this year um we we look at the calendar year a little bit differently than just you know December you know we have a February signing period we have um a transfer portal um so we’ll we’ll continue to look at that um and and see how that best fits our roster um but I can tell you this that the overall roster is much more important than one particular position as much as we want to take a quarterback at this position um I think what’s more important is the overall health of the roster and and so uh if it ends up being that we do take a quarterback that’s great but I think our eye is on the strength of the entire roster BR you’re right at the linebacker this week looked like there was some change Greg Penn played as few as snaps Devon Keys played a bunch you mentioned West week’s playing was that matchup or was there an injury or what happened there no I think we just wanted to take some of the snaps off of Greg you know um you know West is is somebody that had been banged up Matt most of the year he had not been 100% And and we wanted to get him in uh this week and in particular um against a team that is a downhill you know running football team it just matched who he was so uh nothing that Greg done he’s had an incredible you know season for us um Devon Keys is has played the last two games at uh the Sam linebacker position we’ve chosen not to go with the star uh because of the nature of the the teams that we’re playing and that could be the case again this weekend Ryan following up on Wilson’s question uh there there was some comments from the announcers during the game that that you said maybe the the recruiting realities in the wake of the decommitment might allow you to free up some some money and be more aggressive in the portal now you’ve talked about you want to you want to build a program through high school but is this year where maybe you try to take the situation and work it to your advantage we’ll be very aggressive um you know you you I think everybody that’s followed us knows that we weren’t very aggressive in the transfer portal we put together a defensive line using minimal resources um we we’ve really put ourselves in a position um and and and I’ll use this term loosely to stay well under the cap um so we could be quite aggressive uh this year uh and we um we will be very aggressive uh in in that area as well as bringing in 16 midy years um we’re going to have 16 mid years uh we think that the program in terms of the culture and the standards are such that we can do that now uh where we can bring in 16 freshmen and maybe one of if not the largest uh transfer portal classes as well to that 4-3 front uh you talked about running that 4-3 front against Power run teams just is the Comfort comfortability that you guys are experiencing with it now having you know seen it twice used it twice is that something that you know you feel like very comfortable going into this last game given another running quarterback coming at you yeah so and you probably saw this on display when you know Devon’s walked out over the number two or just spaced in any fashion his fit is back in the Box his fit is back into that b Gap and that’s a hard fit when you’re in space and then you’ve got to go back in and fit it’s really a linebacker fit back into the box and you know when you play with a nickel and he’s got to go back in there or you play with a star and he’s got to go back in there that that puts some pressure on your defensive structure um now the opposite of that is let’s try to take care take advantage of that linebacker in space let’s try to take advantage of him in the passing game and and we think Devon is very very good in space in Awareness he is a very good spot dropper he’s not a guy that’s going to play manto man on the number two receiver but he’s really good in space so we just felt like this was the best matchup to give us that kind of um Gap Integrity of bringing him back in on run fits coach you just mentioned how um it was important just kind of stay under the I’m using air quotes here the cap last year uh with the transfer portal but be U more aggressive this upcoming offseason why was that decision made to you know ramp up to this upcoming offseason when it came to that stuff yeah all of them are strategic decisions that you make from year to year and um it just didn’t present for us in the manner that we felt like we were going to reach last year on some things um and um just didn’t I think at the time when we were looking at players that made sense for us uh they duplicated a lot of things uh we don’t have that duplication in the program anymore so that’s why in certain areas we’ll be we’ll be very aggressive I guess if I could follow up on the whole roster building can you just explain what that’s like I mean you’re coaching the team right now but you have a staff that’s going the early signing period Then the portal window immediately follows so how is all that working to start building the roster for 25 well it’s it’s uh Austin Thomas myself Frank Wilson in particular the three of us are are working on that on a day-to-day basis we’re having meetings with players so it starts with retention first of players that have to make decisions relative to whether they’re going to move on to the NFL or they’re going to stay here um so the first part of that is um retaining players that you want the second part of that is the ongoing recruiting process and bringing players into your program through the recruiting process um the third level is the transfer portal and and identifying particular positions that you believe that you need to go out and get a mature player that has played snaps at that position uh at a level that can impact your roster right away and then the fourth is you know who who who are the guys that are are going to stay uh on this team and you’re evaluating those players that have stayed above the cut so there’s a lot going on as as we continue to work on our football team uh to get W’s and and to have positive outcomes so there’s a lot going on um right now in college football uh and it’s caused um a lot of gray hairs it’s caused some guys to say I think I’d rather be doing something else I’m excited about it um I’m excited about what the roster can look like I’m excited about what kind of football team we can put on the field and um it’s going to be a fun couple of months you sort of hinted at it there to kind of stay on the topic with first of all do you think nil here has kind of improved over the last year to the point where you kind of need it to be and um how does that change in any way next year with rev share potentially coming online of the house settlement passes well I mean I think we can say it’s a fair compy that that rev Shar is here right I think the long form from the courts is pretty clear in terms of what that’s going to look like I think everybody has got an idea of what those numbers are going to be um you know that will kick in you know sometime in the summer it’s what you do prior to it kicking in and and and that’s really where everybody is is um keeping their cards close um and because that that is the accelerator right you want to accelerate and be able to retain you want to be able to go out into the transfer portal uh and you want to be able to do that before Revenue sharing so you can begin to if you will U balance off uh what your roster looks like in terms of the numbers when everybody comes into one locker and and and if you just waited to revenue share it’s it’s going to be a different look for for different players you can balance things off if you’re aggressive here in the next few months and that’s what we plan to be and coach over here so uh I know Paul M muing had to step in for Garrett and uh how he’s progressed stepping in a tough spot and you talk about the play of DJ Chester as well in the interior how much has Paul and DJ how they’ve evolved it’s got more and more playing time as the season’s going up yeah so there were markers there that we were really you know kind of excited about um throughout the entire season we’re in a weight training program and um you know we do uh obviously month L we’re we’re testing our players and DJ his numbers have continuously gone up through the season his strike numbers we felt like that was something that needed to happen uh the strength numbers and and he’s at a point now at the end of the season that he’s he’s gotten to what we feel like is the standard of what he needs to be minimum L at that position now the growth will have to happen in the offseason for him but he’s gotten stronger during in the year and and that’s now allowed him to handle a lot more of than one-on ones and and he was able to do that this past weekend very well Paul moves very well it was changing his body type it was getting him leaner it was getting him physically stronger as well uh but he’s very smart and and he has the ability to uh move his feet get up onto the second level and and do some things you know quite well and so we’ll see how this all plays out in the off season but you know you’ve got a couple of guys there that are that are sending at that at those positions right back down here coach uh the term CEO head coach has been used for guys like you and others across college football how have you seen just this new influx of so many different things maybe change your role being more Hands-On we obviously heard of been the play calling aspect but also off the field as well where do you feel like you’ve adapted in that well I get worried when I hear CEO because then I think of an office and sitting in an office and having conference calls and and and meetings look at the end of the day you have to have relationships with your players if if you can’t have those relationships with your players then you can’t get them to do some of the things that we had him doing last week and so um the head football coach today and in and the SEC in particular um it’s a it’s a head coach Centric position meaning um contracts go through them um roster decisions go through him um decisions in terms of how you want to play offense defense and special teams Personnel um standards within your program culture there’s a lot going on there but what you can’t miss is you can’t be in those meetings all day and sit in your office and miss the relationships with your players if you do that that then then you are a distant CEO and you’re probably not in this business very long just want your thoughts on the senior class you’re going to honor this week in particular Josh Williams who’s earned two degrees got like a 3.7 GPA good player on the field the example he said could possibly be a somebody in journalism right could possibly sit with this esteemed group right no I mean I appreciate you bringing that up I mean we’ve got 21 that we’re going to an honor uh prior to the game um you know Z Alexander has been a great addition right coming in from Southeast Louisiana Garrett Dinger has been a stalworth for us you know we all know about Kiren Lacy what he’s done Greg Penn we talked about uh miles Frasier three-year starter Bradon Swinson what a year he’s had right in terms of coming off the edge Paris Shand I mean Swiss army knife for us he’s done a little bit of everything kind of unsung he’s played play End he’s played tackle he’s our personal protector on punt running down the field invaluable to us um J pz has com in and given us snap after snap hasn’t missed a snap he has just been a Workhorse you talk about eating Innings up he’s he’s a guy that eats Innings up for you he’s just been a Workhorse for us Savon Jones has just had a monster year his pass rush has been has been great um you know so just and and there’s others here but just those guys have meant so much and have just dedicated so much of their time um to the program I mean I know you know we had that three- game losing streak but you know I reminded these guys you know they’ve still won 11 of their last 15 games and they’ve had an incredible night schedule where they’ve won 15 out of 16 games they they’ve done some great things and really proud of what they’ve done and and um it’ll be a great tribute to them so thank you you know John’s done it once uh I think maybe he’s done it twice he he he might come out for the trifecta we we we’ll we’ll see uh but he’s been around and and uh he’s he’s working on his master’s degree right now and U it’s it’s great to see that yep with a guy like CJ Daniels just I mean how much has he been working through this year and what effect does he had on your offense man first of all he’s a great leader uh and he’s been a glue guy for us in terms of consistency every single day playing through um a more significant injury than than maybe people realize um he’s had a pre-existing condition uh a heal injury that is a almost a dislocation that uh I I don’t know how he does it uh he he he practices um and we’re careful with his practice during the week to get him to Saturdays and then on Saturdays he’s just he’s just so consistent he’s uh down the field blocking he’s he’s our one of our best if not our best blocker um he’s precise in his route running uh he’s got strong hands at the point of attack um and uh we just we’re just excited about having him with us and and all indications are that he’s going to be back next year must haves um well I love I love the the white meat turkey with the gravy mashed potatoes are a must and and then I’m a traditionalist I think in those things and then because of those turkey enzymes I get a little bit sleepy I need a couch and and uh I don’t necessarily watch the football games um but they can be on as a backdrop so maybe a good nap this this Thursday afternoon thank you appreciate it and you did great you’re my family coach Brian Kelly with his weekly press conference and uh good to hear mashed potatoes a tradition for Thanksgiving that’s the way I feel um nonetheless talked a little bit about uh the recruiting strategy moving forward and uh may be very aggressive in fact that’s the term he used aggressive in the transfer portal when those windows open up they’ve got one in December and again in April Tigers getting ready for Oklahoma coming up Saturday from Tiger Stadium with kickoff
