how’s it going Yankee fans welcome back to fir side Yankees with Alex and Ryan obviously Yankees get Paul gold Schmid Carlos sanen who I thought would go for half of what he ended up getting from the Guardians one year what $12 million goldm gets one year $12.5 million with some performance incentives I I think right now you know I want to break this down Ryan I know you did a solo yesterday I didn’t really get to get my perspective on this kind of look at as the pros and cons because there are pros and you know as a Yankee fan we want the pros to be reality um but there also are some major risks here right you know you have a player that’s going to be 38 next year and Paul gold Schmid um you know the bat speed’s declining the power the hard hit rate still kind of is up there 92 percentile last year but there were some catastrophic uh declines and losses in his production you know we’re talking about a guy that dropped 75% production if you’re looking at WRC plus went from went from 175 to 100 in a 2-year span that is I mean indicative of age if you’re asking me and just you know things slowing down um as he gets older and the Yankees went for a one-year deal trying to get one last bit of quality performance I mean it’s possible that g just you know Cardinal suck they really were dead in the water maybe he just gave up maybe he just lost his his desire and passion for the game who knows but one thing is for sure you’re going to the Yankees man you better get that passion back real quick you better start hitting the ball freaking hard and doing what you do um and hopefully turn back the clock a year even and give us a 120 115 WRC plus I’d be happy with that that’s a substantial amount better you went from a 6.8 War player to a 1.1 more player in two years that is you know for a player of his caliber and his experience that’s that’s you don’t drop off like that because um you don’t care you drop off like that because you’re getting older so we’re hoping he can just put his best foot forward turn up the clock turn back the clock and turn up the volume um but looking at this Ryan give me your pros and cons you know I know people want to hear really the positives and we will give you that but also the the conservative side of it being you know why are we a little bit scared of this why would a trade might have been a little bit more um maybe efficient for the Yankees and then we look we’ll transition over to the second base Third Base conversation which is obviously a big one because the Yankees are at about 300 million right now in luxury tax estimated salary they have no more money to spend if they want if they don’t want to go over that last threshold unless they make a trade um so I do think that there’s some opportunities that we will discuss but thoughts on Paul Goldman I know you gave him yesterday but want to get the pros and cons from you yeah so um I think as the day went on the best way to put it is I think at the time of the signing I was like h i mean I wasn’t really a big fan of signing Paul goldi that’s well documented on this podcast uh and you know I I was like hey I I’m not very optimistic about his what his play will be in 2025 I think that there are a lot of things that indicate regression uh but you know I think when you look at number one the contract he got number two the trade for Josh Naylor uh I know that people are going to say the return was light but the Guardians seemed to be very specific in what they like in a player and I did see some reports that there were teams concerned about his weight gain I’m not sure if I mentioned it on this podcast I may have uh that maybe teams would be a little concerned with the weight gain even though he was a one-year player you know I asked well how much could he balloon in another year apparently that was a concern for teams and is that a valid concern yeah I think so if it’s a concern other team share that you know what I mean especially the Guardians they seem to share that concern yeah I mean I guess there were concerns about whether he could hold up at first um you know what what his athleticism scores would look like going into next year um and you know the Guardians Target very specific players I know that the pitcher that they got back from the Diamondbacks may not seem like a big time pitcher you might go the Yankees have better pitcher than that why didn’t they you know earlier tried to trade Nester for him and I’m sure they did I’m just sure the Guardians asked for something that the Yankees weren’t willing to part ways with and if that went public I I’m sure the Yankee at we would be like oh okay I get why we didn’t do that um and then call Sana immediately signs with the Guardians right after to me that tells me that the Guardians Carl Santana had an understanding that they may move Josh Naylor and when that happened they would sign Carl Santana Carl Santana came up with the Guardians organization he uh was signed out of the Dominican Republic with Cleveland I’d heavily heavily doubt that the New York Yankees had a chance to sign Santana at a similar price point my assumption here is that the Guardians had the inroads on a player that they’ve rostered basically for the for 80% of the guys career right I that’s what I assumed happened here um and you know you look at the money he got .5 million less than gold Schmid fine right you know we talked about the projections they are projected to be marginally different players right and if I’m like oh you know age concerns 38 37y old Paul goldmit you also have to go hey age concerns 39-year-old Carlos Santana that’s fair uh but in terms of the positives for Paul goldi you know the batted ball data is still excellent he still hits the ball extremely hard um if you look at his damage rate which is expected on base average on contact and you compare it to his 2022 season when he won the NL MVP it was 426 this past season 423 uh the year before that 440 uh his ability to do damage on contact is still there the barar rates are you know a little bit down but still very good exit Vos are still pretty good um the thing I mentioned that I was concerned about was that he was kind of selling out for power because he didn’t have the the quickness quickness or the athleticism uh to get to high velocity uh to sit on breaking balls and then shoot his hands out quick um but what I would say is that perhaps Yankee stadium is the right ballpark for someone with those issues to mend some of those issues so I checked his own contact rates over the uh last three seasons his own contact rate remained unchanged from the 2023 season uh so that’s not too much of a concern uh Chase rate is obviously the big one that’s that’s a concern there uh but if he’s able to kind of shoot the ball out to right field and not be so obsessed with pulling the ball uh because the ballpark doesn’t play in in Bush Stadium the ballpark does not play for power to the right side of to right field if you’re right-handed hitter you have to pull the ball out of the yard um for goldi though like you can sit and say all right I’m going to sit back on this fast ball on the outside part of the plate I’ve got power I’ve got strength I’m going to shoot the ball to right field um that’s that’s something you can do now if you look at his uh spray chart he would have had a few more home runs that he played all of his games at Yankee Stadium uh expected home runs said that he would have had three more home runs Alex if you add three home runs to any players total you know that that can significantly boost your Ops it may sound insignificant it is very significant uh and so I decided to also look at his home uh you know just specifically focusing on his home games because Road games you can’t like translate that over because you’re not going to play 162 games um at one ballpark you it’s it’s never going to happen although the Yankees are playing what basically like 189 right cuz it’s no excuse me 188 I think they or how many do they play in Tampa cuz Tampa’s basically Yankee Stadium now it’s I mean I’m not being like even like trying to be like an a-hole like it’s a very serious situation uh but like the dimensions of the ballpark are very favorable toss yeah it’s the same dimensions if I’m not mistaken I I could be completely wrong it could be like slight alterations I think it’s pretty similar yeah there are one two three four five six there are six home runs he would gain at Yankee Stadium and there I believe one or two that he’d lose he would lose yeah he’d lose played all his he had a horrible uh like 650 Ops at home uh and he only 11 home runs there he would have hit like 15 if he played all his games Yankee Stadium that’s significant to me that’s significant that’s a guy who has opposite field power who can’t get the ball out of the yard there because I like this is crazy I was looking so this is actually all Fernando crw he’s just added he had a b 350 feet to right field and it was not close to getting out like the guy was like had room between him and the wall 350 to right field not like right center right right field and he still couldn’t get the ball out that’s not happening at Yankee Stadium a lot of batted balls that are getting caught too are going to come off the wall uh those are going to be doubles uh lot of these like you know pulled fly balls that are outs you know they bounce off the wall at Yankee Stadium um you know he would have had a much more productive year playing for the Yankees then playing at St Louis so I guess the thought process here is that it’s a guy who bat made play here and the other thing too is the Cardinals have like very publicly they had Public public bad issues with relaying data not having enough data being backwards as an organization you can have all the criticisms you want about the Yankees they’re very data oriented they’re very very data Savvy they’re very in touch with the numbers they understand how data Works they understand how modern philosophies works so I wonder if uh Paul Goldman who will be working with James rousin kind of a you know a guy that players really seem to like uh and someone who kind of can convey analytical philosophies in a way that players understand perhaps that’s beneficial to him versus St Louis where he was just kind of rotting away with an organization that you know kind of sucked at what they were doing they’ve gotten better now but they really sucked at that like I mean think of how bad they’ve been over the last two years they’re kind of a joke right now yeah yeah they are and and listen so the way I’ll paint the Paul goldmit thing is like this is a move the Yankees clearly like experience at first base which is partially why they liked Rizzo a lot I think that losing Rizzo they want another like guy that’s going to like Galvanize the clubhouse with Aon judge and I think judge probably played a part in this one because I know judge and and goldm are are good friends so you know you’re talking about you have what four MVPs on the roster now um you know Cody Bellinger Aaron judge Paul Goldman I feel like I’m missing one of them uh Stanton so like you you have four aging aside from Bellinger i’ say he’s he’s still young before like I mean and then a judge just won an MVP so it’s like you know you got couple guys are capable of producing at that high of a level I think Bellinger it’s still in him it’s just he wasn’t really at that level the last year or so so you know the Yankees are playing this game and like they’re playing the upside game right it’s a dangerous game because they could easily go the opposite direction here but Paul goid is interesting right he’s going to give you a way better defense than you’ve gotten um from Rizo or John birdie or DJ may he way better defense at first base offensively he still hits the ball really hard if you look at his swing I love his swing it’s so compact it’s so quick I mean I wouldn’t say bat speed is like a big thing of his but it just he has a very very uh when he does make a decision it’s very concise and very deliberate um you know this is a guy who was a phenomenal ball player just two years ago so you know I think if they get the upside they’re looking for this contract will look like a steal right they paid 17 mil for Rizzo last year and they’re going to get way better production from gold Schmid at 12.5 and that’s I think a win in my book from a from a statistical upgrade standpoint we think they could have done a little bit more to upgrade more substantially um but Ryan I do think that this is like let’s just look at it apples to oranges Paul Goldman is significantly better than Anthony rizzone significantly better than what we had at first base last year and at least on paper that is a win to me could they have gotten better maybe probably if they wanted to go and trade assets away but they just decided to spend money and when all a said and done they will probably walk away with a lot better value this upcoming season than they had last year at first base and in my book that’s a win because you got better at the position I think that’s probably how they perceive it as well and that’s kind of how I’m going to sit here and say like you know do I love Paul Goldman no but he makes us better at a position that we had negative War at last year and I can live with that um you know what I mean I I think that that’s and what do you think about that perspective because I think that ultimately if you’re just talking about last year to this year this is an upgrade and I think that at least we should definitely harp on that fact um could it have been more of an upgrade sure but I’m just happy getting better at a position that was definitely one of our biggest weaknesses yeah I think you know we talked about live with it right I think live with it is kind of the phrase we used to describe Paul goldmit you know as the days got closer to him signing because at some point we were like it’s not sexy we don’t he’s not number one on our board but you know he could do worse right like you could have brought Rizzo back that would have really like been like no right like oh God no please don’t do this look gold Schmid is still not a sexy option he’s still not my top pick projections like him more now these sign with the Yankees they haven’t projected for a 114 WRC plus and I think you and I agree if we got a 114 WRC plus and 24 home runs out of Paul goldm in the year 2025 we’d be like hey that’s a win that’s a win right like we’d be like yep two thumbs up that’d be a really good signing i’ I’d give Brian Cashman his flowers his Praises um the one thing I do like about goldmit is that he’s one of the better base runners at the position over the last three years and that’s not booed by his MVP year or anything like that like he like legitimately is not a bad he is fourth in BSR amongst qualified first basem that’s important to me I know people are going to go why does it matter he’s slow he’s not going to steal base for you number one he stole 11 last year he stole 11 last year he’s a smart base runner and number two there’s such a big difference between yeah he’s about a a zero on the like he’s he’s a he’s a net neutral on the base paths and Anthony Rizzo or Alex fugo or Josh Donaldson or Jose Travino like these guys are abysmal on the base PA they kill you on the base pass they’re Killers they’re anchors they’re awful Anthony Rizzo was slower than John Carlos ston last year ill gross right like that kind of stuff that’s the Yankees were the second worst base running team in the stat cast ERA last year that’s gross that’s the worst second worst Bas R team in the last decade ill I don’t want to see that again I do not you the only reason they were able to win as much as they did and I say this because they were an outlier among all the really bad base running teams they were an outlier none of them won a single playoff game the Yankees are the first team of that pool of teams to be abhorrently bad which I consider negative-1 base running runs are worse to win a playoff game not even not win the world not go win the pennet not win an ALDS not win an ALCS game win One Singular playoff game every other team there was one other team to make the playoffs in that group the 2016 Mets one and done the wild card they even get to the nlds so um you know I even look at look at Team BSR right so uh bsr’s fan graphs base running metric uh and I decid to look since um 2000 we split the season so that we can get uh all these base running teams kind of filtered out uh the 2022 Yankees excuse me the 2024 Yankees are among one of the worst teams base running wise they’re they’re one of the 25 worst Bas running teams in that group so you do 30 teams you multiply it by you know what is it 24 seasons of League Baseball there are 600 there are 720 teams in this group right yeah 750 teams excuse me in this group they were 25th out of 750 that’s one of the worst base running teams you’ll ever see that this team sucked on the bases they were awful on the bases this is the worst Yankee base running team I think we saw in in the 21st century I’m going to look at Yankee teams and and see if I can get alltime Yankee teams um I’m going to go to like as early as I can find for the New York Yankees uh in terms of bad base running teams yet they’re the ninth worst team in BSR in Yankees franchise history this is the wor the other teams 1925 1943 1932 and you know why that’s all there because of the double plays and teams hitting into double plays and you know how many ground balls teams are hitting back then because everyone hit ground balls and and that stuff that they didn’t understand at the time so dude this and the 2023 team 16th worst so they have two of these are two of the worst base running teams you’ve ever seen your in your life as a Yankee fan like if you were born after 1990 after 19 after the end of world War II in post integration the post integration era so since you know everyone’s been able to play baseball just think about that man that’s crazy the worst base running team since the end of World War II of the New York Yankees franchise history that’s how bad that team was at at all the bases can’t do that again you can’t do it again you can’t I’m sorry they cannot do that again they have to they have to be better if they want to win the World Series they don’t have Juan stto they don’t have wan to mask that the Yankees were able just kind of go we have two of the best players in the world and they’re going to just hit a lot and everything else can suck on offense and on the base paths and they can be inconsistent defensively could be topheavy there have like three or four good Defenders and everyone else can suck out there it’s fine because we have two elite players it’s not fine it’s not you don’t have Soo anymore that’s a big change for me it’s a huge change for all of us and I and I think that right now you know Ryan the question is you get Paul gold Schmid right done that’s Deal’s done it’s uh first base is solved the Yankees are about 300 million in total luxury tax estimated payroll now and the the last threshold is 301 we know how St doesn’t want to cross that line what are the solutions at second and third base because now the Yankees if you want Alex bregman no shot we’re getting Alex bregman the only way that it’s even remotely possible is if you offload Marcus strowman’s entire salary and then somebody else and maybe you’re willing to push over the last luxury tax threshold by a couple million that’s the only way it’s possible nobody is taking Marcus strowman’s entire salary the are going to have to pay a portion of that so you can kiss go by to bregman that idea is dead now the question is it really comes down to the trade market in my opinion Ryan like you’re going to have to acquire an infielder via trade I am not walking into the 2025 season with DJ lameu Oswell perza and Oswell de gabera as primary options as an infielder right you talk about bad base running I mean pra maybe is okay right you’re getting average to below average base running most likely uh looking at infield defense you know proc is a great defender but he’s very respect offensive piece I don’t trust him a bit the Yankees clearly have been burying him for years why on Earth they all of a sudden just suddenly realize that oh he’s going to be good it’s not going to happen in my opinion alalo gabera should be our super utility option I think he is there to help supplement injury DJ lah is a is a walking waste of space at this point $50 million price tag he can’t move he can’t hit anymore the defense is still great um you can play the hot corner but like you’re you’re getting basically nothing and like if you want bad base running you go with DJ lahu you want to go with lack of athleticism that’s where you’re going to go um but the question is Ryan is there anyone on your docket right now anyone on your peripherals that makes sense via trade we talk about Nico horer I know like people on social media talk about Max mzy I don’t think that’s realistic um who who is available who’s out there that would be interesting to you um yeah so I’ve talked about Willie Castro at kind of nauseum right uh 108 WRC plus this year uh 108c Plus in 2023 good base runner um versatile Defender I don’t we watched him play center field against us and he sucked out there uh Alex I doubt he plays a single game in center field for the New York Yankees if we were to acquire him um he’s better in my opinion at second than he is at third uh I mean excuse me at third than he is at second uh he’s more of an like it’s weird too because I’d kind of consider him a range first Defender but the arm is very good uh and I think that if he played uh third base of the Yankees and you moved Jazz to second base you’d have a better defensive alignment uh he’s a switch hitter bat plays at Yankee Stadium he would have had 19 home runs he played all of his games at Yankee Stadium compared to 12 uh that’s significant to me tons of pull side power from the left-handed side uh you know not particularly um someone that Wows you but he’s a good enough player that I’m like okay you know like all right it is what it is like I don’t I I’ll take what I can get he had rough second half numbers I don’t really care about that I I’ve said this before even referring to qu goldmit the second half is fun like sure the second half numbers were good but second half numbers to me are eh right you know second half WRC plus doesn’t correlate more to next season success than first season WR C plus the other thing that I like is that kasro has experienced a shortstop uh not because I think he want he should play shortstop here but just because it just shows how versal is he’s played last year played 56 games at Short 40 games at second 34 games in left 30 games in Center 27 games at third base that’s versatility man that’s versatility that’s hey I got another guy he’s 27 years old you know he’ll be 28 to start at on in April in on the 24th um I’ll take him right I I’d gladly take him off the twins hands it seems like he’s a player they’re willing to move kind of a sneaky player here is Ron Aras of the Baltimore Orioles he’s kind of always had a good bat career 109 WRC plus right-handed bat you know I know he’s got a switch hitter like Castro but you you know it is what it is his defense at third base DRS loves him OA hates him his defense at second base a little more consistent uh I don’t know where I’d play him personally uh but the bat would also play well at Yankee Stadium you think of waltimo and left field it is it’s really hindered this guy’s ability to hit the ball out of the yard um he this past season played 100 games only 115 WRC plus the reason he’s not playing as many games is because the Orioles have a lot of infielders and considering this guy’s two years of control if he gives you you know like a 115 WRC Plus or even a 110 WRC plus with a solid glove you’ll take it right you know another guy where it’s just like yeah I’ll take it you know it’s it’s whatever um and but the player I I kind of come back to now and we we talked about Hassan Kim we’ve talked about uh how we feel about him I again still think he’s someone who’s an attractive option for the Yankees but you know I get that you maybe want to prioritize offense a little more do you kind of bring back Gaber and I mentioned that not to say that glaber Torres is this sexy attractive option that kind of covers everything you want he’s not a good Defender he emphasizes the bad base running issues uh you know those are things that I don’t love uh but he’s also a better player than a lot of the players I just mentioned is he better than Willie Castro probably is he better than Ramon Dias probably is he better than H off probably not right yeah he could lead off too that’s another thing who’s leading off for you cuz it’s it’s not going to be Wily Castro he does not have play discipline the perfect sequence for me right now because you just got a right-hander to play a right-handed bat at first base and Paul Goldman you ideally want to add another Lefty to the to the infield right in a perfect world you could add another left-handed bat to the infield and that is I mean I I I hate to be the most repetitive person on Earth but the Yankees have not traded any of their valuable draft Capital this off season right or rather uh prospects like they they’ve kept Caleb duan’s the only real prospect that they moved and he wasn’t even in our top 10 was he um no he wasn’t ranked in the top 10 he wasn’t even ranked in the top 10 so the Yankees have all of their prospects available I think you do what it takes to get Brendan Donovan now I think Now’s the Time it depends on what the depends on what the Cardinals are looking to move though I mean the right well listen the Cardinals are on are in fire Cell mode they I mean they just let gold smmi walk they’re trying to move Aon a they’re trying to move a pitch I think um they’ve been trying to move a pitch or two like at what point are they just like we’re going to suck next year we might as well just restock with prospects you know what I mean like we might as well just just retool and and sell high on a guy coming off a good year I I think that if brandan Donovan were available he is the perfect quintessential fit for the Yankees you know what I mean he has some versatility he’s a lefty bat I mean this is a guy who’s going to step in is a free agent 2028 you sell a couple of high high like I I would trade Spencer Jones in a heartbeat to get Brendan Donovan and probably will Warren too um and you just keep and let him be the number six just eat Innings this a guy they hit 278 last year with a 342 OBP 14 homers and 73 RBI I mean 115 WRC plus good Defender like I this is a perfect fit he could lead off for you you know like if I’m the Yankees I’m willing to overpay a little bit to get to get Brendan Donovan because he fits he solves a lot of problems like he he gives you a lefty bat versatility control for years and he’s a good player you know what I mean and he’s playing on a bad team like who knows what he could do on a better team so you know what would you if if the Cardinals were open to considering trading him what would you be willing to give up for him CU I think like that he is the perfect fit if I had to choose somebody that would be the guy and the the Cardinals are they’re horrendous man they’re losing their former MVP they’re losing their starting third baseman I mean probably if they trade Aon a they want to they’ve been trying to move him um they just want it to be fair they don’t want to pay all the money so I mean they they’ve considered trading some of their outfielders like they’re they’re stuck in the mud man they’re dead they’re dead in the water why not trade a movable control piece for a ton of Prospect Capital right now if if if he were available what would you get for him so I would ask the Cardinals hey what do you like from our 2024 draft class do you like um do you like Ben Hess do you like Bryce Cunningham if you do whichever pick one of them probably pick Hess because hes was the first- round pick is it rough to trade your first round pick yeah do you do it for Brendan Donovan yeah um Chase Hampton or will Warren are attractive options I imagine in this situation both of them have six years of control both of them have upside um I would I I would offer that um I would see if they’re willing to take a you know those two pitchers and maybe a position player Prospect you know would they like someone like uh you know like a would they like a a Roderick Rus like I would it have to take a George Lombard Jr it’s tough because with George Lombard Jr what I’ve come to learn in recent weeks and kind of just because of the Tucker stuff if I’m being honest with you the and even the crochet talks George Lombard Jr is viewed a the in a way that I think the public hasn’t caught up to yet George Lombard Jr is considered a very strong Prospect so I’d be a little weary about moving him because I think I’d be selling low on his value um there’s a chance it could be a stud um so you know there’s there’s that um but I I it’s weird it’s just like what are the Cardinal looking for do they want to be competitive in the near future do they want to tear it all the way down um what you presented makes sense but the Cardinals have operated in a way that doesn’t make sense if that makes if if if that makes sense uh you know they’ve done things that are abnormal they didn’t trade Paul gmid after 2022 when 2023 when they weren’t good and it was clearly uh time to trade him they uh refused to um you know make more trades at the deadline they added Eric fetty while also getting rid of time they didn’t sell that was stupid uh you know they’re a weird weird weird team but if they’re willing to do a fire obviously Brendon Donovan makes a lot of sense if you wanted to look at someone and I was reading this report last night that the dodg is looking for another right-handed bat they could be looking at Hassan Kim to play shortstop and we talked about this if Hassan Kim get shortstop money from somebody very hard for me to see the yanes getting him because as a shortstop you’re way more valuable as a second base you’re not as valuable that matters um if you were to get Gavin luxer them he’s a left-handed hitter he was a former top prospect he had a decent year last year coming off in ACL te um and in his second half he he was very good he made some serious adjustments start swinging a lot harder um in the second half of the season so post All-Star break uh he put up a 152 WRC plus with a 508 slugging percentage that’s notable to me right like this is a guy who came off UC ACL te it’s very hard to hit after you do that it’s very hard to get thump in your bat he was barreling the ball way more uh he was pulling the ball way more that’s a swing that should play decently at Yankee Stadium he’s a decent enough defensive second baseman he’s a decent enough base runner the year before he tore his ACL he had a 113 WRC plus and a 2.7 71 129 games this is the kind of player I would take he’s 27 years old right he’s a little bit of a better Defender than glaver actually’s decently better defensively than glor is um he had one bad defensive year and this was his past year again he chocked it up to the ACL tear uh he can play him short he can play him third he’s played The Outfield before although not at a high C rate but he’s done it before um he has good bats to ball skills again he’s going to enter his age 27 season is that someone that the Yankees could be interested in I think so again it depends on if the uh Dodgers sign Hassan Kim or not so if you’re a Yankee fan you want another second base option on the market to come available you should be like hey if we’re not going to get Hassan Kim I kind of hope the Dodgers do because then it opens up another second base option a left-handed option someone who should be a decent enough player someone who I actually rank a little bit higher than Castro and Aras because of the bat to ball skills I know that everyone mentions again Max Muny I think we can agree I don’t think Max m is getting traded I really doubt that’s happening they’re not going to trade Max Mony to play Gavin Lux at third they’re not I really doubt they’re going to go get Nolan ronado either why why like what benefit does it serve them noan arado is a worse is a worse player than Max M M’s defense wasn’t really a problem last year so you know uh there are options out there again if you if you want to try the route of blow the Cardinals away on Brendon Donovan for sure I just wonder what that price tag is because if that price tag includes Jason Dominguez I’m not doing it regardless of the player that Brennan Donovan is because I really like Brendon Donan I love him I think he’s one of the um I think he’s one of the Premier second Bas in the sport I just I recognize that you can’t just get Premier players uh and snap them onto your roster like this unfortunately of course yeah I mean like I said it would it’s the perfect fit it’s the perfect match I just don’t know if the Cardinals are willing to do it but if there was an inkling of interest if there was a sniff of possibility and I’m the Yankees and I have all my prospects and next year you can I mean dude let’s be quite honest next year you’ll need a first base right you could probably sign someone for money and you also want to spend on Kyle Tucker you’re going to have Marcus strowman’s money off the books you’re going to be uh free up of $6 million you’re currently paying for Aaron Hicks um and Rizzo on the 6 million buyout so you have 30 million off the books you have lockdown you know you have Jazz still under contract for one final year of arbitration uh DJ’s DJ May’s contract will be coming to an end 2027 after 26 so like you have money coming off the books you can afford to pay like a one-year rental for a first baseman and on top of that still get Kyle Tucker for this big price tag because Cody Bellinger he’ll be off the books too at some point within the next two years so assuming he doesn’t opt out next year um you should there’s not a ton of players like bigname players Ryan that we’re going to be have to acquire via trade right like I don’t I don’t foresee like we still have Garrett Cole in the contract for four more years we still have Max freed Carlos like our rotation and Bullpen are set you know we we don’t need to trade for anybody with big prospects moving forward we have so much uh security with our key position positions with that being said this is one of those moments where you can make a trade and give them a little bit more than what they what they what we would think they might need or want for brandan Donovan still have all your draft Capital because you don’t have to give up a qo for draft picks um you know signing a second baseman and he’s cost controll to 2028 like if if he is available I don’t know if he is but if he is I would do pretty much anything not anything but I would go pretty far to get him from the Cardinals and for Brendan Donovan to be your lock down second baseman every day um and that gives you good defense that gives you great uh offensive production from the position he can lead off for you probably a bit of extra power with the short right porch Yankee Stadium Lefty after losing Rizzo the Lefty bat um at first base I mean makes perfect sense to me um if he were available obviously uh but aside from that I mean you’re looking you can you could go and get a third baseman to play um you know and then move jazz to second base that is a consideration but the idea of getting glaber back pros and cons obviously are he’s a he’s a good hitter he’s volatile you don’t know what version of glaber you’re going to get any given month but when he’s on the dude is seeing everything like he he’s capable of just mashing for you every single day but you just don’t know if you’re going to get the hot GL glabber Torres in postseason play or you’re going to get the ice cold version of glaber where he can’t even see the ball so and and then not to mention he’s consistently one of the worst defensive infielders in the game um and one of the worst base runners on this team and for over the last couple years and Brian Cashman has had no interest in bringing him back for three years now he’s tried to trade him at every single opportunity he’s gotten that doesn’t mean that doesn’t bode well for people that want glaber back Cashman has wanted to move him for years why would they bring him back now not necessarily sure and on top of that if he wants like if he gets like 12 per season we’re we’re going to be 121 million over the third luxury tax threshold so we can’t even really afford to pay him right now unless we shed a contract like strowman’s which I don’t know if that’s possible so I don’t really see the Yankees going out and signing a an infielder uh even if it’s glaber because we just don’t have the money you could try to find ways to make to create space but it’s going to involve getting creative you’re going to have to trade a prospect most likely just to get rid of Marcus strowman uh nobody wants him you know we tried to swap his salary with noan arado who has three years of a freaking salary on the books and and they didn’t want it they didn’t want to take strowman so you know right now I just don’t see a way to get rid of strowman unless you’re pairing a prospect and I’d rather if you’re going to give away a prospect might as well just trade it for an infielder you know what I mean so I don’t know it’s going it’s interesting definitely a lot to happen as this offseason continues to unfold but we’ve already solved most of the problems we got Max Reed to fill a starting rotation spot you get an elite closer in Devin Williams you get a veteran first baseman and Paul Goldman who you know we like uh but we we think is a huge risk it’s a one-year deal so whatever if it doesn’t work out you just move on um you always have the trade deadline over over the summer to address any needs if they pop up one thing I will say about Paul goldmit the dude stays healthy he plays 150 games year in and year out and God knows the Yankees need some freaking stability at first base cuz Rizzo’s injuries I mean how many times have we seen them playing with their regular starters out at the position so at the very least there’s a pretty good chance knock on wood that Paul Goldman’s going to play every damn day for you and that’s definitely a big bonus yeah and the other thing uh you know I kind of thought about this last night too when I was like man Paul Goldman like am I really like enticed by this like I was I was really I was really thinking about it I was really going through the motions guys um if you really look and kind of peel back the layers the Yankees are fine at first base they have Cody Bell Andrew who can play there Ben rice is a backup option and they have Paul Goldman if they acquire if they have three players who project very well off not very well but well enough offense L three players who project strongly at the position right three players with good offensive projections that and two of them are very good defens or good enough defensive players I’m not going to say very good for Bellinger and Goldman I’ll say good because I think very good implies Gold Glove caliber don’t think either them are winning a gold glove there this year um you got three players who can play the position that’s we had zero who could do it last year right the postseason we had Asal the compara and John birdie platoon at first Pace listen to those words John birdie and as wal Blair plon tune and then you might go well that means in the LCS you had Rizzo you had three people could play first base number one play first base at a competent level no play first base I guess so right I I guess they could play first base I guess right if you call it playing first base uh and two John birdie got hurt in the ALCS they were down to Anthony Rizzo and Asal the cabara if anything they Anthony Rizzo being as bad as he was was not going to be like they had no competition for him that’s not his fault but no one to comp for with him for the spot now what if Paul goldm can’t hit righties okay then Ben rice or you put Cody Bellinger in there right uh you know you can do things you can you can kind of move pieces around at the deadline right you go all right let’s look at the market the Cubs are bad the blue are good Vlad is not attainable Kyle Tucker is attainable let’s move BJ first hey we’re at the deadline Vlad is attainable C Tucker isn’t attainable hey let’s go get Vlad I don’t think they’re going to get Vlad to clarify I don’t think that wants to come here right that’s the other thing but like there are other first Bas you can use that example for I don’t know like you know think about sign lont W junor if you want to go in that direction he’s going to be a free agent what if Yan Diaz doesn’t get moved and then you can move over a met the deadline you go all right I’ll move you know keep Bell turn left you know do what I got to do there what if uh you know Nathaniel low doesn’t get moved and he’s available at the deadline all right cool I’m going to go Nathaniel low right like there are things you can the thing is that the Yankees can kind of like there are two position groups where it’s very easy to find a bat and it’s left field and first base this Market didn’t yield productive players at either position outside of stto really and walk and the the productive options at first base were either old or like not that good right you know what I mean um they were old and expensive or cheap and questionable um the trade market you can Yi you can get a pretty good player in the trade market with your of control I I really like the Jazz trade we’ll see becomes available at the deadline but you know the Yankees can I’m not saying this say the Yankees punt to a position so they can get better at the deadline no it’s that can navigate the deadline without looking for just one player they can look for players at various positions and kind of go all right best bat available let’s do it right that’s that’s the fun part um the other fun part is uh you know it’s nice to have it’s nice to have a little more power in the lineup gold Schmid hit 22 home runs last year we had one home run from a first baseman from August onwards I believe um that is awful that is so bad that is like not good right so the Yankees have a little more power depth in their lineup which is something I complained about last here uh you kind of look at the roster up and down or the lineup up and down uh I I you can count the guys who can hit 20 home runs on this list Jazz judge Bellinger Stanton uh Wells Goldman all of them can hit home runs all of them can hit 20 plus home runs Dominguez might be able to get to that point you know maybe you have so far I look at two guys in this lineup say they definitely aren’t hitting 20 home runs it’s vulpi and Cabrera even though vulpi has done it before he has hit 20 home runs in a season before so you know not out of sold out though he’s sold out for power so hard not he’s capable Cabrera is like a 0% chance he ever he’s not going to play enough games to do that I mean let’s let’s let’s s the role there I we can’t dude we cannot go into next season with Oswaldo gabera starting at an infield spot we went with into a season with oald cabera starting in the left field I if you if you are if you want to win I’m not either but if you want to win a freaking World Series you better upgrade second base you know you better you better freaking upgrade and and listen but I think that we’re in an advantageous position right now you have all of your draft you have all your draft Capital rather your prospects all your top prospects you didn’t trade any of them this off season right like you you you managed to reboot the team without moving a single top 10 Prospect if you want to go get a second baseman or a third baseman now is your chance to do it because you have so much control over a lot of your stars on your team you know what I mean all the stars on the team are under contract for at least the next three or four years so if you’re going to make it Splash to go out and win a World Series you better freaking do it now you know there is no time to waste and I know the Yankees stopped they were about to trade some really valuable players for for Kyle Tucker right they were about to trade from really valuable players and prospects for Kyle Tucker why would you stop right now when you were just willing to go out and trade for Kyle Tucker and stop at the at the Finish Line literally Marshon Lynch give the ball to Marshon Lynch bro stop throwing the ball at one at first and goal with the best running back in football you know I this is your chance to really make that Splash move to put yourself in say okay you know what we’re having a good off season season let’s have a great offse you know what I mean like there is one move left to make they have one position left to solve go [ __ ] solve it yeah know let’s let’s let’s go make this team great let’s stop let’s not stop when we’re good let’s go make this team a freaking Contender again and if you if you look at the Yankees projections in the infield second base they’re 10th in war that’s because they have Jazz playing 400 getting 448 of his play appearances there the Yankees are uh at third base project to be the 16th best team in baseball that’s cuz they have Jazz playing 161 play appearances there kind like a mosh posha players that kind of combine for 2.6 War I disagree with that projection I don’t think they’re that good at that third base uh so yeah like L projected for 0.7 war and 238 play appearances I’d be shocked if DJ has a positive War next year like stunned if he has a positive War I’d be stunned uh but the way as it pertains to um you know that that position if you get a decent player at second or a decent player at third you might bump up to like oh the Yankees are like you know middle of the pack at second or third and really good at the other one right because Jazz is a really good player um and you know You’ feel good you’d be like all right you know we’re kind of good everywhere right we’re we’re not outright atrocious at any one position like we have been in some years good God the Yankees were bad at first base last year and good God were they expected to be bad at first base last year people forget Rizzo was like not a sure bet he was a very risky bet it did not work out the way they hoped it would uh you know you know obviously left field didn’t work out the way they hoped it would but even left field was a risk cuz they requiring a League average player um you know they’re requiring a League average player and I guess gold Schmid fits in that mold as well um of like League average player uh look I I just I think the Yankees just have to be decent kind of they have to be good or solid at enough positions because they’re going to be great in right field they’re going be great in the ballpen they’re going to be great in the rotation they’ll be like they just need to be kind of good everywhere else so they have a deep roster that can kind of contribute value a lot of different ways right now the Yankees have the second highest War projection of any team at 48 War they’re the Braves excuse me um then you look at projected standings and you know we’ve been I’ve been talking about like being meaningfully better than the rest of the American League uh you know you have a pretty sizable Gap over you over you and the rest of the AL the Astros are the second best projected team in the AL they have a 524 winning percentage uh their 524 winning percentage uh equates to 84.8 wins the Yankees are 86.9 wins so the Yankees are a little bit more than two wins better if you add a second baseman you add Tim Hill hey maybe you’re in that real where you’re in that you know oh yeah we’re like you know we are a what would be the right word for it we are like three or four wins better than the Astros we’re three or four wins better than the Orioles we’re three or four wins better than I mean God the other Central teams are not very good so yeah I don’t know that’s kind of where I’m at right now yeah I mean listen like I said you make one big splash you’re going to Coast through the American League you know the American League is so weak and you get to world series Anything Can Happen don’t stop at the one yard line I think I think cash gets this though like I think gold Schmidt was a move so that he didn’t have to go and trade prospects to get a first basement on a rental right he just paid money for it instead didn’t give up any prospects so if I was a guessing man if I was a b man you know shout out Far Side bets I think I would be very inclined to trade for a infielder right now and trade for a good infielder not just one that’s going to get you by but one that’s going to make an impact and maybe a lefty bat too so we’ll see how things materialized as I said they’re about at 300 million in luxury tax estimates they can’t afford to spend any more money unless they get rid of a contract assuming that how want to stay below 301 million um which I think is the case so uh clearly they played that game pretty carefully because they’re just like a million below it right now and casin signed that contract knowing that he was going to be below that so I think a trade is coming I don’t know who’s going to be for uh I think it has to be a splash move because you make that Splash move you can compete in a World Series if you don’t make that Splash move you’re going to feel the consequences of that in the American League instead of coasting through so you know that’s just the case we saw the Impact labor had uh as a lead man I just don’t think we have the money to pay anyone right now unless you get rid of a strowman but I think a lot of people are heading in the direction of like strowman’s going to get moved and I think they they feel as though will Bor could be that guy that steps up and F those Innings if they need it but things are materializing we’ll keep you guys updated on the rumors ideas any thoughts that we have as always my friends make sure to like And subscribe and we’ll catch you guys on the next fire side Yankees episode [Music] perfect [Music]
