just wanted to talk that’s [Applause] all all right welcome back everybody welcome back uh we got some news the Yankees have initiated Plan B and it begins with left-handed pitcher Max freed who is coming to the Yankees on a massive contract 8 years $218 million slightly bigger than the contract that the Yankees gave to Carlos rodon that was I believe $162 million might have 161 but my phone is blowing up uh people are excited about this I’ll try and get one of the Braves writers from Hammer territory on the show to kind of break down Max freed from a uh a perspective of somebody who watched him a lot this year but we’ve been talking about this for days um I wouldn’t say he’s an ace but he’s a solid you know 1B he’s a a secondary Ace uh we’ll look at the numbers real quick for statcast and then we’ll go to his career numbers on baseball Sant this year he went 11 and 10 with a 3.25 erra 29 starts you look at the stat cast and anybody who looks at statcast data will tell you that red is good right so he is very very good at a lot of the uh metrics that you see here pitching run value baseball run value breaking ball run value and off speed run value all in the top quarter of the league his average exit velocity is almost as Elite as it gets 95th percentile Barrel percentage hard hit percentage and grow ball percentage all excellent and the reason for that is the style of pitcher that he is he’s a guy who throws the Sinker he throws the cutter the fast Ball’s about you know 94 miles an hour but he’s got a change up just a a really good pitch mix uh he is got a slider and you know um he will pound the strike zone uh he’ll work out of jams he’s a really crafty Lefty who can get the big strikeout now for his career he’s averaging almost a strikeout per inning over the last few years it’s kind of dipped a little bit back in 2022 uh he had 170 strikeouts and 185 in a third Innings 2023 he had some injuries uh he made 14 starts he was 8-1 with a 2.55 ra and then this year 29 starts uh 11- 10 166 strikeouts and 174 Innings I’ve heard some concerns and seen some concerns in the various comment sections about him being injury-prone but that’s really not true he’s made 28 or more starts uh in three out of the last four seasons we’re going to go ahead and take a look at his career stats now he came up in 2017 he’s been with the Braves for his entire career parts of eight seasons uh back in 2020 7-0 during the covid season and then uh 2021 14-7 3.04 ER really good year there uh a six War so his best season in 2022 14-7 2.48 erra and then uh as we mentioned 8 And1 last year 11- 10 this year uh you look at the hits per nine less than a hit per inning the whip is always pretty solid 1.64 for career again really great year in 2022 this is one of the reasons I like whip it it’s basically an evaluation of how many base runners you allow walks and hits per Innings pitch it doesn’t really take into account errors and things like that but uh you know the lower your whip typically the less base runners you have on base and the you know less runs you can allow uh that are not via the home run so I really like this signing I think he slots in probably number two in the rotation uh Cole is your number one still obviously number two is going to be Max freed I think number three is Carlos rodon so you got back-to-back lefties there although you could split them up with Clark Schmidt who was off to a phenomenal start last year uh before he had an oblique strain had to miss a few months ended up coming back late in the season made a few starts in the playoffs I think he’s going to take a big step forward so it wouldn’t surprise me to see him be number three in the rotation and then Carlos rhon at number four in the rotation number five you know probably still uh Marcus strowman at this point you would think that Nester Cortez with the elbow injury is either on the trade block or ticketed for the bullpen he had the flexer strain late in the season one thing that we’ve said the Yankees need to do more and more of uh you know is to count out guys basically who’ve had injuries don’t rely on guys who are dealing with injuries to give you a full season and I’m glad to see that the Yankees despite needing offense in the wake of Juan sto leaving are focusing on getting a little bit of pitching I think that you know the more pitching you can have the better there’s that old phrase good pitching always beats good hitting and you know quite frankly uh I’m not sure that the anes can count on a full year of healthy starters again they had kind of an anomaly this year where they entered the playoffs with six healthy starters and so much to the point that Marcus strowman had to move to the bullpen now one thing I’ve been advocating for the uh Diamondbacks are considering dealing Jordan Montgomery I’ve been saying that the Yankees should try and swing a deal Marcus strowman for Jordan Montgomery bring Monty back Monty makes a little bit more money but the Diamondbacks are willing to eat it a little bit I’m not sure that Marcus strowman can really be a force in the postseason although he’s pretty great for the first few months of the season the last two years he’s worn down in the second half so you know Max free just pushes everybody back a slot after Garrick Cole I think gar Cole is still your number one and he’s 30 years old so he signed through his age 38 season I think you hope for six Good Seasons and you count on a couple the tough ones down the back end but one thing that makes me optimistic about Max free is that these lefties these crafty lefties can pitch for a long time if they stay healthy you know Jamie Moyer had a really successful career changing speeds and and and cutting the ball and sinking the ball late in his career CCE Sabathia long after he was a power pitcher was still put up decent numbers because he learned to cut the ball in on guys hands to sink it low and Away Max freed already does all that stuff so he’s already a very accomplished and Polished starting pitcher so I like this move uh in initially um I think that eight years is a little bit longer than you would like to go but as uh Brian Cashman said when the Yankees handed out seven years in 120 to masi her Tanaka who had never thrown a pitch in the major leagues at that point he said that’s the cost of doing business right the Yankees didn’t want to go more than five years they ended up going I believe it was 7155 actually now that I I think about it um and I feel like um you know this is just the cost of doing business you hope to get six good years and then maybe the last couple years he’s a crafty back end of the rotation guy he’ll probably have some injuries along the way uh and I know people are going to scream oh he’s injury prone every time he has a little thing but you know that’s just what pitching is these days guys get hurt you hope to get five or six good years of mostly healthy pitching and then you count on the back end of the contract being a little bit rough oh yeah I forgot about Louis Hill Luis Hill probably slides in number five so that that really empties out uh Marcus Strow unless the Yankees are considering Luis heel for the bullpen um I don’t know why he slipped my mind rookie of the year uh he also uh you know didn’t pitch a lot in the postseason didn’t pitch at all in the division series you know Luis heel is a guy uh has electric stuff would not Shock me if the Yankees are trying to save a little bit of money on the bullpen by slotting him into the closer position you know Brian Cashman said yesterday that um there’s a lot of creative ways that the Yankees can figure out their way around the SoDo situation and the budget situation you know um having lost SoDo you do have some money to spend but I don’t think it’s realistic to sign like Five Guys right I mean you’ve got to uh you know kind of play with things a little you got to kind of get creative you know maybe they deal a Clark Schmidt or a Luis heel for a bat you know a young controllable starter who’s good uh has a lot of value and you know that’s what they were willing to do Michael King to San Diego as part of the Juan sto deal so you know things can get a little bit um creative uh J Paul says freed has unbelievable stuff I watched him in Florida during spring training his stuff is amazing stuff stuff is really good again we will put up the um stat cast stuff and if you look at his movement profile it kind of that’s one of the great things that uh baseball Savant has put up you see the color coordination and it shows you the pitch and how much it moves so you know his you know Sinker eight and a qu inches of vertical uh break and 10 inches of tail his cutter you know it’s um 16 in drop right that can’t is they’re really saying his Sinker is going up that doesn’t make any sense it’s just a two seamer I guess but he gets ground balls on it uh and then um the for seamer I guess this is looks like he mostly mostly straight um all right so you know you see the the uh the metrics it looks good let’s get some comments going see how you guys are feeling about it Gregory mccan says get Burns too well we’re already stock full of starting pitchers so maybe if they move somebody they can do that but I think it’s time to focus on hitting Richard man Manan says get crochet and Bellinger I think this rules the Yankees out for crochet um if you’re gonna expend um you know bullets in a trade you’re going to try and get a bat now that you’ve got um man so many people still want Burns I really don’t think that this that that’s likely I mean they’re not going to SP they’re going to spend on hitting you can bet that they’re going to go after Cody Bellinger um it wouldn’t shock me if they went after somebody like an Anthony santand there but again uh 235 hitter I think they want a little bit more produ production there um we’re gonna talk about Kyle Tucker later tonight Ethan Ahern says are you comfortable trading Luis heel now for Kyle Tucker that’s a good question one year of Kyle Tucker I mean maybe if he if he signed an extension okay if you get a window to negotiate with him before the trade and he agrees to like a six or sevene deal and avoids free agency so you don’t have to go through this bidding war again it was a uh comment by uh Ken Rosenthal this afternoon he said it’s the perfect replacement for Juan stto he’s a left-handed hitter he’s a good outfielder he’s fast he’s young he’s athletic plays for Houston though and reportedly the Cubs are also interested on Kyle Tucker they’re in on him and so uh it would make sense that Houston would rather deal him out of the league rather than de uh trade him for to a potential ALCS opponent right the Astros are still trying to win if they move uh Kyle Tucker and possibly framber Valdez as has been rumored then um you know that that means they’re probably taking a step back for a year or two to kind of reset things um and once you take a step back and reset I mean this there’s no guarantee that you’re going to get you know back out on top so it’ll be interesting to see what happens uh I’m definitely interested in um Kyle Tucker if he’s really available but the price will be absolutely um nuts so Jesse Gonzalez says freed will get cooked in the AL also not everyone is made to pitch in New York well I mean that’s just your opinion man uh you know in the words of the dude the Al and the NL are really not that different anymore because the uh NL has the DH right so there’s there’s a lot of really good lineups in the National League it’s not like it was back in the90s where there was a huge disparity in offense between the national league and the American League I’d agree that there’s still some better offensive players in the American League but um you know he’s going to get to pitch you know against the uh the Rays in the division a few times they’re not really an offensive Jugger not you know I think he would match up well against teams like the Guardians who we might have to face um I think I think this is a good signing for the Yankees my initial reaction is very positive Franklin Lopez says great first step hopefully Cashman doesn’t just stop with this move also Kyle Tucker would be a dream but I believe the price is too high again we’re going to do a live show in two hours and 55 minutes tonight we are going to talk about uh Kyle Tucker among other topics uh there’s also been some news that the Yankees have reopened negotiations with Christian Walker first basement I had uh a conversation about a week ago with Robert Murray who is a national baseball writer out of Arizona lives about 10 minutes from uh Citizens Bank Park and got to see a lot of Christian Walker and he said he’s one of the most underrated players in baseball now to be fair gonna be 34 years old the Yankees have seen this movie before and its title was DJ lameu DJ was great until he fell off a cliff and in today’s game the modern game that can happen also you got to consider the fact that he was playing in a dome where the conditions are you know um a little bit more easy during the summertime and and and being older uh the heat will wear down on you a little bit more so also um he’d have to shave his beard which he might not want to do so I I do think it’s interesting that the Yankees are at least looking at him Ben rice obviously still uh waiting in the wings had some good moments he had the three home run game that prompted me to shave my head due to a poorly thought out tweet but um look lot of positives about this hopefully the Yankees will take some steps to uh address the offense in the near future I don’t see Burns coming I don’t see uh any major starting pitching other than this it’s going to be Bullpen it’s going to be offense I think Bellinger is probably the next move that would be my prediction the Yankees need a left-handed bat you’ve I’ve talked about this at nauseum but you had three left-handed bats that you were counting on last year that are now gone Anthony Rizzo who didn’t do much anyway Alex Verdugo who got off to a good start but again didn’t do much anyway and then Juan sto who of course was incredible so I’m counting on Jason Dominguez coming back and replacing Alex verdugo’s spot in the lineup right as a he he might not play Left Field he’ll probably play center now that Soto’s gone and judge moves back to right but I think Dominguez is going to be a 25- 30 home run guy with potentially 30 stolen bases he hit 34 in the minors he doesn’t hit lefties very well but he’s deadly from the left-hand side of the plate against right-handed pitchers so that will help you uh account for the loss of Verdugo at a much lower cost now you got to figure out what you’re going to do to replace sto’s offense you know you could add more power at first base right you know you’re getting 41 home runs out of the right field spot so maybe you know you take that spot it becomes judge and now you slide Dominguez to center now you got to fill in home runs and production from left field and first base right so maybe you get Bellinger for left field that’s 15 home runs maybe you get uh Christian Walker for first base that’s 25 to 30 home runs and all of a sudden you’re up there back around 40 and it’s it’s a negligible loss of power you’re still going to miss the on base percentage in front of judge there’s no way around that he’s an elite on base percentage guy and you’re going to miss that now but the Yankees did the smart thing uh the price on pitching is always very high they went ahead and got a left-handed pitcher for the rotation lefties typically do very well at Yankee Stadium and the type of pitcher he is fits with long-term success as long as he stays healthy and I think he will uh his his stuff translates into a guy who can become crafty even as his velocity continues to drop it’s already down to 94 miles an hour I could see him succeeding at 91 miles an hour we’ve seen Nester Cortez do it uh he’s a big guy he’s 64 190 pounds he’s wiry so you know uh good move for the Yankees interesting move let’s take a few more comments here um elino says Fred is better than Blake Snell I don’t know if I would go that far I mean Blake Snell when he’s on top of his game is amazing the Yankees reportedly had interest in Blake Snell they opted to um not make a further offer because they were waiting on Juan stto and Blake Snell you know after the off season he had last year where he got basically left at the altar and ended up having to sign a deal late in the uh late in the winter and basically missed the first P part of his season and really didn’t put it together until the second half he wanted to get locked in quickly and so he went to the Dodgers he’s going to be part of a probable division winner probably going to pitch in the world series again I think the Dodgers are still the team to beat out west Padres are going to be very good but they’re going to lose Tanner Scott I think uh via free agency they might lose jerck and proar but then again they’re going to get better too Jackson Marill is going to be even better next year so um very interesting things happening all over baseball right now uh Yanks prods says how about Roki suzaki well suzaki is somebody that it sounds like wants to pitch in a medium to small Market uh on foul territory today they did a little bit of a uh a discussion about how his agent said he might want a soft Landing because of some of the media issues he’s had in Japan and if the Japanese media is giving you a tough time imagine what it’s going to be like you know um in America in New York the media capital of the world I think it would be a good fit for him to go someplace like Kansas City Eric Katz threw that out there they’re a contender actually it might not have been CRA might have been somebody but it was they’re a contender that’s going to be in the playoffs but they’re kind of like a small medium Market they’re a good team they could use a pitcher like him who’s like a Bonafide Ace level pitcher that doesn’t make a lot of money so I could see Roki suzaki ending up in KC I could see him going someplace like the Texas Rangers I could see see him going someplace like the Cubs maybe even someplace like Cleveland although um you know I just I don’t think anybody ever really wants to play in Cleveland I think when he tells his agent oh yeah Cleveland I think he’s gonna ah no let’s let’s avoid Cleveland no no offense to Cleveland but yeah nobody likes Cleveland anyway so Bob uker used to tell stories about how like nobody ever wanted to go to Cleveland anyway uh BX kid says thoughts on giving glaber Torres a one-year deal not going to happen um sounds like Toronto Blue Jays are in on glaber Torres the Mariners I’ve always felt would be a good fit for Gaber Torres but I just don’t see him coming back Richard C says Cliff Lee 2.0 that would be nice that guy would be [Music] dope Ken Patel says that Andre Jimenez just got traded to Toronto is that true I did not see that but that’s a big deal that guy is a Platinum Glove winner at second base so I guess that if that’s true then that means um no glaber Torres in Toronto interesting Sinker baller says Fried Chicken well I think we have a sponsor for the chicken buckets now don’t we right I we just stamp Max Fred’s picture on there I wonder if they gave him a cut of that give him a nickel per bucket um Eric coach says um strowman is not a bullpen arm at all in his mind I agree I think that’s one of the reasons now that Luis heel could be considered for the bullpen I mean 100 m hour fast ball good slider devastating uh change up he could be an outstanding closer you pair him with Luke Weaver but the control has been an issue I still like him as a starter even though I forgot to mention him earlier uh when I was rapidly firing off names but um yeah I mean number five starter who was what about 15- n this year with a uh uh about a 3.5 erra something along those lines not too bad um the more I think about it I really think that there’s a possibility that the Yankees could deal either a Clark Schmid or a Luis heel to get a bat just like they did for Juan stto I wouldn’t do it for Tucker though unless you got an extension out of him but uh hey we got 3,000 watching between uh YouTube and Twitter we got 2,000 watching here Live on YouTube so go ahead and hit that like button for me go ahead and smash it I’ll pause I’ll give you a second go ahead and hit that like button hit that subscribe button we are cruising towards 45,000 we are the official podcast of the F territory Network for the Yankees if you look at the bottom right hand corner that’s the little foul territory network logo we got that new little bug and then pinstripe territory on all your favorite podcast platforms so go ahead and like And subscribe Bobby T IO says we need to tighten up our defense that’s one of the reasons I like Bellinger and Walker Bellinger is a good outfielder and a good first baseman so no matter where you put him on any given day and they like versatile guys who can move around he’s a plus Defender Christian Walker one of the more Elite first baseman in the game I’ll go ahead and pull up his numbers real quick um just hang on there Christian Walker I’ll pull up his stat cast for you so you can look at it now the thing that concerns you is the but you look at the defense 91st percentile at first base the other thing that concerns me a little bit about him is a little bit pull happy I mean he hits the ball really far when he hits it so some you know he’s some of these home runs wouldn’t be home runs at Yankee Stadium but some of them clearly would be he does have some pop to right field you see this one out here at the Diamondbacks park that’s a uh a double but Yankee Stadium that’s in the bullpen so are these These are obviously in the bullpen too so he has some opposite field power uh he obviously sprays the ball all over the field he’s he’s got hits to right field right center and when he connects to left field it’s in the air and he crushes it you look at the bat speed the bat speed is a big indicator of power you know John Carlos Stanton uh has some of the best bat speed in baseball still actually the best if you look at the statcast data and he also has you know among the highest exit velocity every year and he hits some of the furthest home runs you know Force equals mass times acceleration right so if you’re a big dude and you can whip that bat around fast and you connect you’re going to have some real force and distance on the baseball so Christian Walker could be a guy who helps out on both sides of the ball we’ll see how it works out um but let’s take a few more comments the nicker Bacher says he likes Walker if he comes relatively cheap I think his age will help with that also he wants to be on a contender he played in the World Series a couple of years ago I’m sure at this point in his career he wants playing it again while he’s still somewhat in his best years uh Ray rard says Alonzo Pete Alonzo is an old strikeout machine we don’t need any more of them I agree with you 100% you’re a smart that’s [Music] right uh Devin Mato says Oswaldo Cabrero would be a great starter he produces when he’s playing start him at second I I like Oswaldo but I think what the Yankees see in Oswaldo is a guy who played lots of positions who’s extremely versatile that’s the value that he brings right so I feel like they’re probably going to leave him in that utility role but anyway this podcast is about Max freed Welcome to the New York Yankees Mr Max freed 8 years $218 million I will be back at 900 p.m. for a show uh focused on Kyle Tucker and Christian Walker we’ll talk a little bit more about Max freed I’m sure but we’re going to do another show in about 2 hours and 40 minutes I got to run and finish my Subway sandwich but congrats to Max freed on his new contract with the Yankees Brian Cashman I hope
