it is Wednesday December 11th 2024 this is another offseason edition of baseball today that is not my man Trevor PLO that is my man Jolly Olive I am Chris Rose producer Dan along for the ride as well yeah you only show up at the big times like when you sign Juan sto to a $765 million deal I’m surprised your uh sto Jersey isn’t on yet I’ve had Mets gear on the past couple days I wore my Mets sweatshirt but it’s 70 degrees and rainy outside New York so I had to take it off wow what was it like walking into the office the day after you stole Juan stto from a lot of our favorite Yankee fans stole is a strong word Rose he had every choice in the world it it was civil at the jnb media office it was civil we had good discussions there was no gloating Dan work didn’t show up that day so I didn’t get to do any gloating he used personal time that’s what he did he used personal time because he was so crushed about wants move from the Yankees to the Mets that’s beautiful that’s what makes our our office so much fun uh but the Yankees did strike back because on day two of the winter meetings uh they have fortified their starting rotation Max freed eight years $218 million that is the richest contract ever given to a left-handed pitcher he’s going to be 31 in January do you love this pivot off of stto or are you a bit skeptical because of the length of of the deal and Max Fred’s injury history uh it it was a totally necessary move for the Yankees to make whether it ended up being Max freed or Corbin Burns though I do think uh freed is a better fit for them a lot of people are saying the years are crazy the money crazy sure uh but prices are what they are right now everyone knows you have to overpay a little bit in this current market to get Talent on your roster and if you’re not going to get wano you have to get one of these two big fish at the top because there’s no real position player like stto that the Yankees can plug into their lineup currently from free agency to instantly recoup all that value and freed he’s been one of the most valuable pitchers of the 2020s in the 2020s itself he has the lowest erra of any starting pitcher there are some caveats Fred has never thrown over 190 innings in a season he’s only eclipsed 180 once but I think what the Yankees are doing is they’re buying themselves Elite Insurance here because we all know last year Garett Cole had some injury scares he was on and off the field he came back when it mattered most and performed in October but there’s no guarantee that you get 30 starts out of Garett Cole next year and I think a lot of Yankee fans would have felt pretty uneasy if Carlos rodon is your game one starter in a big series that you consider must win in this judge window whereas when you have Max freed who’s performed in a World Series won a World Series been in the playoffs basically every year of his career with the Braves that has to make you feel a lot better so yeah is eight years a lot sure but you’re paying for the front half of it because the front half is this judge Cole window that you absolutely have to win it uh so I love this move for the Yankees if they complete the entire story and I’ll get to that in just a second now you talked about some of the stats of of Max freed I’ll even go back a little further um since 2018 of pitchers that have thrown at least 800 Innings there’s only one player that has a lower ER than Max freed and that’s his new teammate Garett Cole so they should be feeling great about that they also feel like they’ve got seven uh capable starting pitchers right you you look at the entire list it’s cold free rodon Schmidt heel strowman and Nester now people are like okay well they’ll just get rid of strowman or Nester well I mean yes you’re gonna get rid of them I don’t know what you’re going to get back I don’t know how much money particularly when you’re talking about strowman who’s scheduled to make 18 and a half next year Nester is going to be somewhere between seven and eight in his last year of arbitration the thing is is I don’t think you want to get rid of everybody here right I mean there are some guys in there that do have injury history including Max freed who has been on the injured list 10 times in his career and at least once every season and last year there was a little bit of a forearm scare so you hear that you’re like oh gez so I just think the Yankees have to be careful right this isn’t fantasy baseball this is real life baseball these are human beings that have injury histories attached to them now what do I mean by about completing the story they looked at the rest of the free agent everyday player market and they said okay Alex bregman really good player I don’t love the rest of it right there’s a there’s teoscar Hernandez uh Anthony santand there there aren’t names that pop so they look and they say Kyle Tucker’s available what if we get him what if we sign him to an extension those are the two things that have to happen I think they have to trade for Tucker which is being rumored I think they have to extend him before ever puts on the Pinstripes and go from there they have to treat it like the Dodgers treated the mookie bets deal from Boston a few years ago because they lost out on stto and you can sit here and say well Max freed is great he is he’s awesome but you have to complete the story yeah I agree with a lot of what you said there I think there’s there’s talented players on the position player market right now uh I feel like I don’t know this if this makes sense but everyone’s been so out on Anthony Santander that I’m kind of in on Anthony santand again I feel like I’m playing the reverse card there because these guys are talented they’re coming off good years but I do agree the real value and the real fits for the New York yies right now are on the trade market and if you listen to any talking Yanks episode in the past three weeks you’ll know Cody Bellinger was the name that was floated first baseman Corner outfielder uh Kyle Tucker has been in the news the Cubs are actually looking to trade for him as well so there’s going to be competition there’s that implied Yankee tax between the Astros and the Yankees and you talked about extensions and it’s kind of a flip of a coin like when you look at wotto they weren’t able to get that done and then when you look at other cases like bets and even Francisco Lindor you’re making these trades with the idea in mind that you’re keeping these guys for more than just the one year so that is the risk you take when you extend yourself to make this trade and you mentioned the surplus of starting pitching before it’s going to be one of the higher end options that the Yankees view as a feasible trade candidate it’s not going to be Marcus strowman or Nester Cortez it’s going to be someone more like Clark Schmidt or yeah with that intense up side with that you know young age and years of control and all that but I think the Yankees can afford to do that because their top three has become so good what they need to do now is they need to get more Lefty bats in the lineup they need to get better defensively to make Max freed as good as he can be a ground ball specialist and then you go from there yeah I mean the thing about Tucker is that he is the perfect fit in New York if this comes to fruition because you know he missed it felt like at least half the year in Houston um but he can do everything he is a true five tool player and so he’s one year from free agency I don’t know if they’ll be able to extend him unless they make I mean what do you think that they’ll have to pay him if they give him an extension right now it would have to be in the fours wouldn’t it wouldn’t you the reason why I’m sheepish on the whole extension idea is because next year’s free agent class is Vladimir Guerrero Jr Kyle Tucker and then there’s a steep drop off after those two guys so they bidding is is going to get crazy especially for teams that might emerge this year and want to take the next step or teams that are like the Yankees that are coming at the end of their window and need to make a big impact move those price tags could get real high I don’t in my brain I know K Tucker’s talented but I don’t view him as like the 300 to 400 million doll guy but if he hits Frey and the B War gets started the numberers definitely going to get there so your extension offer to Kyle Tucker has to be pretty substantial J I disagree with you you you know last year he did he played less than half the games he played 78 games do you know what his war was I think it was still a three and a half four wor season four seven yeah like I want to I’m saying this Kyle Tucker for some reason doesn’t resonate in my brain as like a star player but he is and he performs like a star I think maybe going to this bigger Market could do him wonders yeah and the other side of this story is could the Yankees for a second straight year a for emotionally to trade for a guy like a Wan stto and then a Kyle Tucker and not extend him based on what just happened with Juan stto that’s up to Brian Cashman uh I think but what do you think do you think what do I think I think they have to win now so you have to do whatever you can to get the right players in place to win this year and the next year and the year after that because this three-year window is what I view as like the healthiest and the most effective Aaron judge will be in the Yankees contract you have to put your best foot forward and if that means sacrificing prospects that you believe in so be it because it’s all about the 2025 Yankees not really the 2030 Yankees and you can tell by Max freed getting an eight-year contract like that’s a very symbolic of the entire situation so you’d be willing to fire your shot on just one year of Kyle Tucker after having just one year of Juan stto me personally no but I think the Yankees front office will yeah yeah I think so too uh I think that would be really really fun and interesting and I agree with you the Yankee fans cannot dismiss the Cubs being in on this in part because I think Chicago has some real interesting pieces particularly guys that are ready to burst their way onto the scene at the major league level like they have a ton of top 100 prospects that are ready it’s not guys that are 18 years old and we’ll see in three years like they are here they’re ready well Rose here’s what I’ll say if the Cubs do end up getting Kyle Tucker uh they already have a right fielder Yankees trade for SE Suzuki bam yeah I do think that se could be interesting elsewhere but yeah I think that that would be uh a name that certainly would be out there uh the other side of deal was that the Boston Red Sox were apparently very very close on bringing him in of course Lucas gelo is one of Max Fred’s best friend uh goo is up there in Boston is expected to be healthy for the entire 2025 season actually texted with Lucas he was obviously disappointed that uh Max is now going to be going to the Red Sox arch rival do you think that Boston now has to have like a massive overpay because they’ve been selling their fans the last couple of years on all right we’re ready here we go we’re ready to take off and it feels like they haven’t signed a star free agent since David pry Rosie I want to begin this discussion by saying a quote from Andrew Freedman 10 years ago the man running the show over in the LA Dodgers if you’re always rational about every free agent you will finish third on every free agent the Red Sox need to stop being rational when they were spending like Dave dumbrowski when he was in charge they were winning championships they were competing every year even Craig breslo himself said if you want to compete in free agency you’re going to have to get uncomfortable and I just don’t believe that the Red Sox front office has made themselves uncomfortable in their Pursuits of any of these stars and they need Star level Talent right now it’s not like they’re a year away or two years away their position player core is ready they’re young they’ve already demonstrated that they can hit at a major league level they had a Willer Abu rookie season that was absolutely terrific Rookie of the Year caliber in my opinion they have a talented infield right now I don’t understand why they have come off so sheepish in all of their Pursuits of star- level players it’s getting thin quick man I mean they kind of they have to get Cor Burns now they need someone to lead the charge and the Ace of the staff because you know if you put a one on top of Tanner Hal Brian Bao cutter Crawford I feel a lot better about the Red Sox pitching staff as a whole but you can tell that there’s very clearly a void on this team in terms of starting pitching so the Craig Brea regime is Young we’ll see what comes of it but it’s been very disappointing so far and I totally understand auson Red Sox fans being extremely frustrated all right uh so you had your quote I’m going to have mine this is from Chief baseball officer the Red Sox Craig breslo who said this at the winter meetings in order to attract free agent talent you have to be willing to get uncomfortable he said this can’t be about doing what feels perfectly comfortable there’s a very very fine line between being aggressive though prioritizing being competitive in 2025 and being irresponsible and Reckless so that means that sounds like he’s trying to cover his ass I think so sometimes you got to be Reckless man yeah and they haven’t been Reckless and ownership on one hand at the beginning of an offseason says we’re all in and then you look and you’re like well what’s your definition of Allin like we didn’t add [ __ ] um and that’s what Boston fans have felt like they’ve dealt with the last few off Seasons yeah they either need to go get Corbin Burns or you know what they’re gonna have to end up doing trade for Garrick crochet which obviously isn’t that’s not bad but it means you’re giving up guys that you might need somewhere down the line whether that’s in your lineup or to go get something that really can help out for a Chase to a playoff spot but the Boston Red Sox of old would do both I in my opinion right now the Red Sox are the best positioned team to put together a crochet package that is worth the deal for the white socks but I don’t believe that they’re GNA do it because they’re so like trigger shy on on just making these moves and making their team better and it’s so weird to think about it but a lot of the discourse in the JN boy media office and true the American League is very vulnerable right now this is the time to push forward and try and make your moves you don’t have the Los Angeles Dodgers the three Titans in the NL East that are going to be looming threats like the AL East it’s kind of open like it’s a little bit open right now it feels like a three horse race that you can get involved in and the Red Sox are kind of just sitting with their hands in their pockets yeah that’s kind of the nice thing for Boston is that they could if they wanted to open their wallets go sign Corbin Burns and then go trade for Garrett crochet if that’s what they wanted to do instead they’ve already offered the qualifying offer to Nick Peta and that’s what you hear might be coming back like I’m sorry you had a nice year but that’s not going to excite me if I’m a Red Sox fan after I’ve been hearing about freed and burns and maybe trading for crochet I don’t know man God Almighty there’s part of me that wants to see the reaction though of Red Sox fan if nothing happens because nobody loves misery more than a Red Sox fan even with all winning they’ve done this Century I’ve slowly been watching the we got ice boys become the grumpy old Boston fans fingers but it’s true when you establish a winning culture not only in baseball but in all your sports the standard gets raised the bar gets raised and the Red Sox are well below the bar right now well I will admit I am jealous every time I fly through Logan Airport have you ever flown through Boston I can’t say I have okay so when you go through uh the checkpoint when you go through TSA you look up and they have all of the banners the sports championship banners I think it’s even just from this Century possibly but all four teams are represented you look up there and particularly when you’re a guy from Cleveland and you’ve got like Yay we’ve got our one NBA Championship in 2016 like I almost I almost want to drape myself in a flag of that you know and say okay well we won one to and there’s like 90 banners up there like damn you Boston people this is the burden you create for yourself man they got to do something they got to do something big all right um every Tuesday Thursday and Sunday we’ve been doing something big over the last several weeks and that is presenting you the latest edition of Blitz Ball Battle 5 we had an amazing game that just happened I know this is a preview but still you want to listen it is semifinal time here in the warehouse as team baggage takes on loveia it’s been a while since we’ve seen them they’ve been resting they’ve been relaxing they got their pitching in order the tandem of Nikki cassid doton peely feeling great they feel great and they are the favorites they have obviously been swinging the bat as good as anybody until yesterday when we saw baggage unlock something extra base hits they were known for their singles and I’m not just talking about match.com we’re talking about actual singles these guys could not get an extra base hit to save their lives that all changed yesterday all right prediction time Kelsey Wingard who do you have having this one loveia is the only team to have a buy baggage is running hot so because of that I’m going to take team loveia because every time I try to take team baggage thinking that they’re going to win they lose baggage but loveia you get it I haven’t picked loveia for obvious reasons so I’m picking baggage I got baggage and I thought I was nuts I still think I’m nuts but I’m going to go with baggage the winner has a birth in the final it’s Blitz Ball Battle 5 presented to you by DraftKings all right now that is actually a semifinal that is available already on our warehouse games channel so you missed the live chat but that’s okay that’s the beauty of YouTube go back and watch it it was an unreal finish so do yourselves a favor find out who is going to be in the final enjoy that and then we’ll see who will join that team in the uh final I think the next semi-final comes out Thursday I believe wind down it is you know it’s crazy we wait we wait after we tape you know Blitzball Battle 5 and then it all go right it does all right there’s a re reason I’m wearing my Guardians lid today it’s because they had me busy afternoon and night on Tuesday trade between the Guardians and the Blue Jays the three-time Gold Glove second baseman Andre henz and reliever Nick sandland they went north of the border for Spencer Horwitz and a minor league outfielder then later that night Cleveland flipped Horwitz to Pittsburgh for three pitchers a pair of left-handed prospects and Luis Ortiz who made 15 start last year for Pittsburgh now the big part of this deal is that Andre Jimenez is owed almost a hundred million over the next five years so did you see this strictly as a salary dump for my Guardians it’s got to be um I think Jimenez has tremendous upside as a player I feel like a lot of people are selling him short in this trade I know that his offensive numbers were poor but he is a worldclass Defender uh but the Guardians already a fundamentally sound defensive team and for the price tag that was attached to Jimenez just wasn’t feasible for them to maneuver that and make other moves that they need to make to continue to compete in the American League I will say the destination does kind of confuse me we talked a little bit before the show about this but I felt like Jimenez would be a tremendous fit on a team that’s very close to competing for a World Series already like your San Diego Padres even the Giants were a destination in my head as potentially a fit um the Blue Jays they got some bats in the lineup they are I think back-to-back team Gold Glove winners so I don’t understand why they acquired a defense first bottom of the barrel offensive second baseman with a massive price teack other than they saw a move to be made and they decided to make it and you can make the same argument with them as we did with freed let’s see what happens after how did they build around this move but I really like the trade for the Guardians I’m not going to lie they got more than I thought they would and then they flipped that and turn it into even more with the subsequent trade okay so let me start with the emotional toll that is taking on my my Cleveland people Andre Jimenez is a fantastic player to watch play I mean when we talked about banning the shift and things like that it was to watch guys like Andre Jimenez play defense like he is that good and you saw it in the playoffs there was one play made I think it was against Jazz Chisum where he went all the way to his left he threw ball and Naylor stretched all the way like it was one of the defensive plays of the postseason and that was commonplace with him over the last several years people will also look at and say he’s a four War he was a four- war player in a terrible offensive season a couple years ago he was higher than a seven War player and that’s when he really peaked offensively and that’s when he then got his contract extension which was nine figures and it was welld deserved maybe it was a little early in his status in terms of uh being an everyday baseball player but they did it the problem was you look down the road this year he’s going to make 10 and a half next year it’s 15 and a half and then three seasons for the next three seasons after that it’s 23 A5 million he had a 632 Ops last season it was among the bottom five of everyday ball players in baseball not all four war players are created the same like him on a decent hitting team like a really good where they’ve got some Mashers awesome you saw that Cleveland had a real tough time with the Yankees pitching barely scraped by Detroit in the first round that’s not the way that this can do business and people will say well it’s just it’s the Dolan’s fault and they don’t pay money right we know that that is their MO just like for you everybody would love to root for an Uncle Stevie who could just keep throwing money at whatever situation they need the reality is that’s not how Cleveland’s ownership Works to so to sit here and [ __ ] and moan about Cleveland’s ownership is not going to help Chris antonetti and Mike chernoff build a team to get back to at least the ALCS mov like this hopefully will I agree I loved everything you said there I mean I think it’s it’s tough because he’s obviously linked to that Lindor trade he’s obviously a world-class Defender you know how talented of a player he is but the extension kind of set in stone that you know he was not going to play the full seven years here I don’t think any Cleveland Fan thought that I just don’t think I ever thought it was going to happen this early but what you said before the show and I’m going to take the words from you really resonated with me if they waited another year and Jimenez put up another 632 Ops there’s no way you get out of this because then you have only those really high price tags that you just mentioned in the last four years and it’s back-to-back Seasons demonstrating that he is a bottom five bottom 10 hitter in baseball I hope that the Blue Jays see something that they can fix he’s obviously still a great contact bad he doesn’t strike out a lot there are pluses there and you know the glove is there but for that price tag I found the move pretty perplexing and they also gave up Spencer Horwitz in the trade who demonstrated that he can hit at a major league level obviously Horwitz is with the Pirates now I really like that fit at first base for them they have a longterm answer there now but yeah it felt like a heavy price to pay especially considering you were taking on all the money but Toronto’s been trying to spend money for the past few years no one wants to take it I guess give it to a guy that’s already owed money in the first place yeah I guess I mean I don’t know what they’re doing to me they they are the most uh confounding team in major league baseball I have no idea what they’re trying to do um in terms of building a roster we keep you the last two seasons we’ve heard they’re in on Shi they’re in on wotto and then they have this miserable 2024 and now we’ve hit the time like it’s the witching hour for Vlad and Bo bashet who are in their walk years like we I have no idea about the future of that team as far as Cleveland and what they actually ended up getting from the Pittsburgh Pirates they got two left-handers who are in the minor leagues and both high draft picks uh one of whom was after his sophomore year at Wake Forest could have been up for being the number one pick in the entire draft and then he didn’t do so well I’m being nice here didn’t do very well his Junior season that’s why he dropped to the third round um but as far as Ortiz real fascinating guy I had to reach out to my buddy Steven balt who of course calls the Pirates games and covers them on a daily basis he said he is a solid middleof the rotation typey guy who could have a higher ceiling if Cleveland can unlock his velocity which has dipped a little bit but he’s become a much better pitcher uh really likes his slider added a cutter to his repertoire um and he’s gonna have to eat some Innings because they have a lot of question marks in that rotation heading into 2025 and I’m trying to ease Cleveland fans a little bit Frankie Monas who did not have nearly as good a season as Luis Ortiz just got 17 million over each of the next two seasons from your team to hopefully be an Innings eater right I mean that’s kind of what they’re hoping for if this guy at least eats Innings he costs you nothing he costs you nothing for the next few years but Cleveland is hoping that he’s more than just an Innings eater and the way that Cleveland can develop pitching even at the major league level I have faith in those guys but I’m not going to sit here and yell at the Dolan because this is nothing new this is nothing new you know would I love it if they spent more money absolutely would I love to have Uncle Stevie as my owner a th% but the reality is no I love my team am I gonna not support it yeah I’m gonna go support the guys that play the game manage the game coach the game and build the team I’ve never gone to a game to go root for an owner yeah I mean you nailed it on the head I mean the second trade is is much more win-win in my scenario the Pirates desperately needed offense they’ve had a cycle rot of first basem year in and year out from your Carlos Santas to your Rowdy teses to your Josh Bells now they have something of a long-term answer there which is exciting for Pittsburgh fans they had a surplus of starting pitching I still really like their one through four of SK Keller Jones and falter they felt like they could deal from a position of strength and Cleveland in my brain is one of the three best pitching development teams in baseball maybe the best and the evidence was their Bullpen last year but I do agree um you uh warmed me up to the thought that I think they need to probably make one more starting pitcher move Shane Bieber is not back till July so if any of Tanner BBY Ben Lively Gavin Williams Ortiz and then Tristan McKenzie if any of that goes wrong you have no backup option right now so I think that’s how you use the money that you just freed up from Andre s menz that 11.5 mil that 15 mil whatever the number landed at you can go spend that on a starting pitcher which is what the price is for guys like Frankie Monas who just got I believe it was a $17 million a something around that range Cleveland can now go spend that and get a guy that they want and I understand the fans being gunshy31 then it’s a little more tolerable if they don’t then all bets are off and you can say whatever the hell you want Absolut absolutely all right let’s move on to the team that actually won it all in 2023 the Texas Rangers uh after opting out of the final year of his contract Nathan avaldi returns to the state of Texas three years $75 million is the reported deal do you feel like that’s a little too much for a guy who’s going to be 35 in February no I think this is going to end up being one of best pitcher contracts signed in for agency this year uh I was all over Nate evaldi the guy has just been as consistent as you can possibly be for five years running now proven playoff performer wanted to be in Texas so why not bring back a guy that wants to play for your team that helped you win it all I love the deal man and I mean you we’re gonna say this about literally every starting pitcher contract that is signed this off season the last year the last two years it’s going to be tough but that’s what it takes to get these starting pitchers from the market right now I don’t think the Yankees want those seventh and eighth years out of freight I don’t think they’re expecting the greatest out of it and I don’t think the Rangers are expecting the greatest out of ivaldi’s last year of this deal but those first two years I have to believe that he’s going to be the same guy that he’s been for the past five years which is that mid three er still has the strikeout potential keeps the ball in the ballpark and helps them fill out their rotation they also still have some work to do but this was a really nice start for them their rotation has some question marks like the very expensive contract of Jacob deg Grom that is more a contract that I’d be worried about if I’m a Rangers Fan not this three for 75 for na evaldi uh also there’s a lot of injury history in the rotation recent injury history so I thought they had to bring back a guy who just had his second most Innings pitched um I love the deal the guy’s a bulldog and you know obviously the you know the um part of his career I think that will be the indelible image is him suffering a loss and it was what in gain three of the 2018 World Series where Max Muny took him deep in the 18 inning game he came out of the bullpen and saved the red so and everybody in that Clubhouse basically gave him a standing ovation for saving the bullpen for going out there and just gritting it out and that’s the thing that you remember about Nate a evaldi is what a great teammate he sounds like and then in 2023 for him to do I think he went five and0 in the postseason as he led the Rangers to their first ever World Series Crown um this 25 million a year like I just mentioned that Frankie Montas who had an RA close to five last season and is barely pitched the last couple of years is getting 17 a year fingers crossed for your Mets so this is I really uh I really wanted a team like the Orioles to be in on Nate evaldi someone who been in the playoffs has done it before has that Bulldog mentality because I feel like that’s a missing Edge that they have right now uh Texas Rangers this is a terrific signing because this is exactly what they need to get themselves back into relevance again this year yeah he was one of only two Texas pitchers that had more than 110 Innings pitched a season ago the other one is Andrew Heeney and he’s a free agent so this was a move that I don’t look at it like oh really 25 a year I look at it as like this was totally necessary for them if they want to be anything and let’s remember they fell all the way to 78 and 84 season ago so they still have plenty of high pric Talent you got to keep stepping on the accelerator there it’s that’s simple that’s the way I look at it at least yep and they also traded for Jake Burger last night too pretty uh cost efficient move in terms of the prospects they dealt Marlins what are we doing four years of control kind of felt like a bridge for your next era that you’re trying to build not a guy I would have traded at all a guy that Ken hit in Marlin Park absolutely befuddling move great move for the Rangers yeah I mean he’s not a he’s not a war guy because he doesn’t do anything other than hit the ball over the fence but he did that he did that very well uh once he ended up in Miami so we’ll see what that means for I think Nathaniel low is kind of the interesting guy to watch he’s heading I think into his walk year they could put burger at first base if they want to try and flip low for something but that’s probably a discussion for another day all right you know what we all need a little bit more of to get off our ass with bold flavors and a refreshing Citrus kick Mountain Dew is going to get you off your ass and have you feeling like you’re on an actual Mountain a mountain where the weather is always perfect your friends are ready to ball play pickle ball play Blitz ball invent a new kind of ball why because the mountain is calling and you should answer so grab your friends grab an Ice Cold Mountain Dew wherever refreshing beverages are sold and three words for you do the do all right Roki szaki he has been posted by his team in Japan teams uh at the major league level have until January 23rd to sign him Dodgers Andrew fredman says szaki is quote a major priority for us however the right-handers agent Joel wolf uh he did play a little Meet the Press on Tuesday Tuesday said the 23-year-old is a bit shy might be better off in a midsize Market listen to this he’s not verbose uh he doesn’t necessarily love people that are verbose uh sometimes I will be talking to him and talking about some very important things and at the end I’ll ask him if he has any questions and he’ll say that was a lot of talking he also apparently didn’t have a great time with the Japanese media and wolf wanted to make the point not the media that is from Japan that’s over here covering guys like Otani he said the Japanese media he felt like was very unfair over there and said he might be better off just going to a smaller place are you buying that or do you think he’ll end up in a place where the light will shine brightest I’m partially buying it um and I think we all kind of knew this going into ri’s sweep scks when he came over a year earlier and demanded to be posted because he forgoed that yoshinobu Yamamoto esque deal that he probably would have gotten if he pitch an npb one more year and it’s exciting because you know you have these mid-level Market teams that are very clearly not seriously getting involved in these free Asian Pursuits here is a high-end Talent mid2 starting pitcher that has great great potential that feasibly any team can be in on that has that higher-end bonus pool of $5.5 million so it’s an exciting time for a lot of teams on a lot of their fan bases I still think the Dodgers pose a serious threat because if you want to spin what he said uh Roki doesn’t have to be the number one Japanese star on his own team he can be the number three Japanese star on his own team get his feet under him in an organization that is a proven winner and a proven developer he also said he prioritized a team that can develop pitching so look out for that as well maybe your Cleveland Guardians could be a possible fit who knows the possibilities are endless I think his sweep Stakes are going to get really interesting yeah I and I love that part of it I am always curious why what goes into the thinking of why he didn’t want to wait another year I mean you’re talking about probably a$ 300 M million deal for him easily right yeah sh ended up fine he did but that’s because he’s one of one I mean if if he had waited I don’t know man it’s hard to say who knows what happens in a year maybe rooki gets hurt and his Market’s different you know yeah that’s possible but I mean his Market I’m just talking about the finances of it all I don’t understand I don’t understand it from his standpoint why he wouldn’t want to wait another year that’s what yeah I’ve rationalized it a bit in my brain but definitely when the news hit I was I was perplexed I was expecting Roki to be the third piece of the big fre agan pool next year to go along with L Tucker I thought it would have been a better fit for him because he would have been easily the most lucrative pitcher available in my opinion but instead he’s joining the party now yeah um so I sit here and I think and I still can’t I have a hard time getting past either the Dodgers or the Padres on this one and listening to him maybe San Diego would be a better fit you know they do play to a packed house but they don’t get nearly the coverage that the Dodgers do it’s not the traveling circus with everything that comes along with it um so he’s just finding out I mean that was the other thing that Joel wolf pointed out is that he has been to the United States but he hasn’t had time to find out about all these cities and what they’re about so I think he is getting an extensive crash course and he’s going to need 30 days I I don’t even know if that’s enough time for him him to figure out what all these organizations are about what their history is in terms of developing pitching what the people are all about now some of these teams have a head start because they’ve gone over and they’ve already seen him so they know what they’re probably getting because to to most of us Baseball fans he’s a little bit of World Baseball Classic and a lot of YouTube highlights we don’t know what he is but I think I’ll be fascinated to find out and I still would be shocked if he ends up anywhere except LA or San Diego yeah San Diego was my pick uh because of the ud darish effect Darvish was really good at recruiting Japanese players to the Cubs there that is a real factor and they have a pre-existing relationship Darvish was actually the pitcher that helped develop Roki slider which is this tertiary pitch and very effective also Ruben nebla is a well-regarded pitching coach someone that a lot of pitchers have grown attached to and has a great reputation so if you want to do the pitching development thing that feeds into that as well but at the same time the Dodgers are the Dodgers and they usually come out the winner in these kinds of things so I do agree I think it’s West Coast uh and if what his agent said is true these next 30 days are going to be probably the most frenzy 30 days of Roki sasaki’s life it’ll be fun buckle up we’ll know by sometime after I think January 15th when the new international bonus pool right when that pops in that kicks in yep yep so we’ll we’ll know sometime after that where his major league home will be and then right after that spring training I mean it is going to be here before you know it what are we on December think we have 114 days till opening day I mean teams teams are going to start reporting in two months from now it’s not that far off once you get past the holidays it’s a get excited the first day and then everyone goes back to waiting for the regular season that’s that part is true that part is true but for us the content will never stop you should know that and once again it’s the last big day of the baseball winner meetings down there in if anything big happens whether that’s another free agent signing Allah Corbin Burns or something uh we’ll be here to give you our thoughts on that we’ll put out a breaking news episode as much as we can that’s what we do uh for our one-of-a-kind producer who is in a much better mood today than the last time we had an episode Dan roor and the Uber talented Jolly Olive sitting in for Trevor ploof I am Chris Rose we will see you later this week at some point here on baseball today
