on this day the final weekend before the holiday break gets off to a roaring start with news according to mark fand of mlb.com that three-time gold Glover Christian Walker and the Houston Astros are going to be teammates agreeing on a deal Mark joins us on this breaking news report Mark there seem to be a lot of kind of Fallout stories aside from the fact that Walker a premier Defender and a big- Time bat is going to Houston uh talk about what’s next the ramifications of this in both Phoenix and in Houston and elsewhere in the major leagues yeah I mean obviously this is a huge deal in Houston for the fact that having traded for isach Paredes and now signed Christian Walker that essentially slams the door on a return for Alex bregman uh the Astros had a an offer out there that had been reported at six years and 156 million bregman was waiting he’s obviously looking for more than that uh and with the Astros having tried to trade this week for Nolan Aron and Aron exercising his not trade clause to turn down a deal there uh you know Paras would have moved over to first if they had gotten arado or resigned bregman now Christian Walker takes that first space spot and you have to assume that means the end of any uh talks for Aeron or bregman to come to Houston feels like uh the Astros are working with clock restrictions here trying to get as much done before things go dark during the Christmas week as they possibly can the Kyle Tucker trade is a big deal you talk about the compensation package and now Christian Walker signed signing in Houston so as the field of available first baseman thins out we had the news overnight that maybe the Seattle Mariners are making phone calls to trade for a first baseman Josh Naylor’s name has come up uh at some point we’re going to run out of chairs at first base who else is out there who else is in need of a first baseman well obviously the big fish out there first base wise is Pete Alonzo uh he’s uh sort of a man without a market at the moment it appears that the Yankees who do need a first baseman are not really in on Alonzo at the terms that he’s looking for and the length of a deal the Mariners need a first baseman as you just mentioned uh they don’t I believe have the money to go sign somebody like Alonzo I think teams are going to Pivot looking at shorter term guys Paul gold Schmid Carlos Santana the trade market Josh Naylor uh Nathaniel low um who am I forgetting there oh there’s been a lot of talk about Christ and kasas potentially uh you know being involved in a trade with the Mariners uh I know the Mariners like him the Mariners are trying to maybe trade Luis Castillo there could be a match there at some point uh between those two teams so a lot of first basem out there you know the Diamondbacks have to replace Christian Walker the Yankees have to replace Anthony Rizzo the Mets either going to bring back Alonzo or have to replace him uh they could go with the third base route and move Vientos over to first so you’ve got a lot of moving Parts but there are a lot of first basem out there between free agency and the trade market uh it’s one position that really hasn’t moved Walker is really the first major Domino to fall on the first Bas Market we’re getting word now Mark on the terms of the deal with Houston and according to our colleague John Heyman Christian Walker in the Astros 60 million over a three-year deal Bob Nightingale credited with the first in that information category I would say that my gutshot reaction to that is uh intriguing as it relates to Pete Alonzo there’s a vacancy now in Phoenix and if the Diamondbacks weren’t willing to go to 60 to bring back a very popular incumbent I’m not sure sure what kind of appetite there might be there to bring in Pete Walker or Pete Alonzo rather on what we’re all guessing is going to be something north of three for 60 what’s your initial reaction to that yeah I think that’s right and I think you’re looking at you know that’s why there’s been talk about a potential reunion of Paul Goldman in Arizona probably looking for a two-year deal uh I know the Yankees are in on him for sure as well um I think guys like like gold Schmid and Santana who are not looking for the length of a deal that Alonzo is looking at certainly at the aav Alonzo is hoping for those are going to be more appealing options for a lot of teams Alonzo as great as he is as far as his power goes and he’s got more home runs since 2019 than anybody in the majors except for Aaron judge uh you know he’s not a great defensive first baseman he’s 30 years old people look at him as a guy who could be a DH at some point uh and I don’t know that you’re gonna you know and his Ops has gone down the last couple years so I don’t know that you’re going to be rushing to give Pete Alonzo a five or six year deal uh you know for 23 to $25 million a year first base is also a market uh and I wrote about this this week first base is not been the market that it’s been a decade ago you know a decade ago we saw guys like Joey vad Miguel Cabrera Prince Fielder uh Albert puol get these deals for 220 240 $260 million we haven’t seen that lately the last 10 years you know Freddy Freeman and Matt Olson both signed deals in the 160s um I sort of equated it to the running back in the NFL teams think they can find somebody to play first base they’re not they’re not going to pay like they are for a short stop or a starting pitcher or a center fielder so Alonzo’s got a tough Market ahead of them but I think the guys who are looking at shorter term deals will will have some success in finding teams to fill those holes pretty good analogy there with running backs uh this note the fact that Christian Walker next year as it stands now is going to be the second highest paid Astro on the roster behind only legac Jose Altuve and I think it’s pretty interesting what this does for the pet Alonzo Market more news before the Christmas holiday week Christian Walker going to the Astros Mark fan thanks for the update thanks Matt
