all right just finished watching the NBA Cup Championship game with the Bucks and the Thunder going to be breaking it down and also talking about the big takeaways from the game what to expect moving forward and then a a Jimmy Butler trade to the Phoenix Suns the Milwaukee Bucks are officially your NBA Cup champions they pull out this game against the Oklahoma City Thunder 97- 81 uh Giannis ends up winning NBA cup MVP he finished with a impressive triple double 26 points 19 rebounds 10 assists uh he also had two Steals and three blocks just to really put the cherry on top now I picked the Thunder to win this game and the reasons that I picked the Thunder were because I thought that the Thunder were very young and very fast like to get out in transition and play with a lot of energy on defense and also with their with some of their rebounding and the bucks on the other hand they like to play Slow they’re very uh low team in Pace and attempts per game and I thought the Thunder would be able to speed them up and I also thought that you know the Bucks rely a lot on their three-point shot for generating offense I felt like the K or Oklahoma City Thunder perimeter Defenders would be able to run those bucks players off the three-point line and be able to keep them in this game I also explained how I thought that the Bucks could win and basically everything that I said uh came true I said that the Bucks would could win this game by dominating the glass they have a a lot of size way more size than the Thunder do um I thought that they would be able to they could effectively drive and kick if the Thunder choose to you know Blitz the paint every single time that Giannis would drive he’d be able to kick out to an open shooter and they’d be able to knock it down and then I also brought up the the kind of obvious mismatch uh that the the Bucks have here uh Thunder really don’t have anyone athletically that can deal with Giannis and not that there are too many guys in the NBA that can deal with Giannis but the Thunder especially just don’t have the size for it I went three for three on those points the Bucks outrebound the thunder in this game 52 to 43 the Bucks attempted 403s and made 17 of them uh shooting a solid 42.5% on the night and yeah Giannis was a complete mismatch they had absolutely no answers for him all night when this game started one of the things I really wanted to pay attention to was the defensive lineup so what how are the teams going to match up head-to-head and how are they going to play each other starting out in the game uh Thunder put Lou Dort on Dame and Dort was just a pest classic L Dort on Dame not letting him do anything fighting over every single screen uh picking him up most almost entirely full court doing everything and anything he could to make sure Daman Liller did not touch the basketball and he honestly did a pretty solid job with that uh they lined up Jay duub on Giannis and this was just the the exact matchup that that Giannis could have asked for uh they had uh the Bucks had Andre Jackson Jr on SGA which actually was a really good matchup and you could see that SGA was not a big fan of having Andre Jackson Jr on him every time that uh Jackson pulled up and then lined up against him sja was really quick to pass out of that Jackson was also very good at similar to Dort fighting over every single screen just really being a pest and getting all in on sgaa all game every time that they were both on the court and then um the Bucks also they decided to put Giannis on Dort which I think kind of shows their hand as to what they were thinking about this game Dort is not a uh an incredible offensive threat for the Thunder uh he’s able to make uh some open threes but he’s more out there to be a defensive Pest and I think this was already early in the game kind of showing their hand that they wanted to go to Giannis and they were going to lean on Giannis to win this game and they wanted to give him uh some rest on on defense by having him guard lud Dort and as the game goes starts Giannis immediately comes out on a hot start jdub just has absolutely nothing for him they Oklahoma City tries to switch to putting hartenstein on Giannis to try to match that size and uh the Bucks and Giannis are are effectively able to counter with Jackson Jr doing such a good job guarding SGA they’re trying to match up hunt they’re trying to get uh conatin or AJ Green to be guarding SGA instead of him so SGA can try to get some easy buckets and honestly for the first half of this game it it’s pretty close it’s pretty back and forth pretty low scoring all things told at halftime Oklahoma City is down uh 50 to 51 uh Shay uh was really struggling with Jackson on him he was only able to go four for 13 from the field uh and this is sort of where the the script of the game really starts to show itself and kind of get out of control uh bucks went of 18 from three at halftime the Thunder were one of 17 from three it’s honestly remarkable shooting one of 17 and only being down one point if you’re the Thunder at this point in the game um but throughout the game and this was really exacerbated in the third quarter this is really where things started to fall apart for the Thunder uh the Thunder end up scoring only 14 points in the entire third quarter and Shay accounts for nine of those 14 points uh every time the Thunder were trying to attack the rim Lopez and Giannis were there to effectively uh defend it and block it and force them to go for mid-range shot or floater or or something like that and then on the other end uh there were quite a few parts where they uh the Bucks have Giannis and Lopez on the floor at the same time one of them will have a small on them usually like Caruso or or Jay duub or whoever it might be they would just pass it back and forth to whoever had the guard on them and that the other person would easily score they had absolutely no answers for Giannis at at one point in the game they were able to you know Giannis really likes to do this spin move where he’ll try to spin to his left uh when he has the ball and so or excuse me he’ll try to spin to his right and so the Thunder were trying to preemptively you know they try to prepare for that they would shade a Defender over onto his right side to stop him from doing that spin move wouldn’t matter Giannis would just drive left and usually he could uh make it contested over the guard and if he felt like he couldn’t he would always be kicking it out the Thunder kept trying to Blitz the paint and and suffocate the paint and build a wall every time that Giannis uh drove to the basket but at the end of the day uh most of the time we’re talking about a four or four or five guard forward type players that just don’t have the size for it and even when Isaiah hartstein was on the court the Bucks did a really good job of utilizing space uh cuz hartenstein is usually lined up with Brook Lopez Brook Lopez knocked down three or four threes in this game and he was able to stretch him out of the paint sit in the corner sit near the top of the key pull pulling Isaiah hartenstein out of the paint giving Onis a clear Runway to just go for a contested layup against much smaller uh Defenders bucks were also able to get Dame involved he finishes the game with uh with think 23 points he hit some pretty uh crucial threes throughout the game game as well um they were able to get him off of Dort I think one of the more frustrating things in this game is that very late in the fourth quarter the the Thunder decide to switch to putting uh Lou Dort on Giannis and then having Alex Caruso on Dame and that actually seemed to be way more effective more often than not whenever Giannis would see Dort on him he would just pass out of it to a different uh different Buck player to try to run the offense and then there were a couple times where he tried to back down lud Dort and was not nearly as effective he had to work way harder to do it and sometimes just had to pass out of the play entirely it was not able to drive on it really frustrating that the uh thunder only tried this out for just the last remaining minutes in in the fourth quarter now big takeaways for this game uh let’s start with the thunder so they’re still the number one team in the west right this obviously doesn’t count as a regular season game this is just a fun little exhibition game in uh in Las Vegas and so does not impact their record or their standing however um I I wouldn’t be too concerned if I were the Thunder I think I’d feel pretty comfortable chalking this up to just a poor shooting night you know we’ve got uh you know a full team of players from Oklahoma City had five extra days in Las Vegas in the middle of the Season who knows who knows maybe that could account for them shooting uh five of 32 from three-point uh and they actually finished 33 % shooting on the game just incredibly uncharacteristic and ab visible they only scored 81 points like that that’s like a score from like the 1990s in the NBA uh completely uncharacteristic of this team as well uh moving over to the Bucks uh this I think this is this was a pretty impressive win for them as well um you know they were able to show at the end of the day the Oklahoma City Thunder this is still the top rated defensive team in the NBA and they were very effective on defense now they didn’t have a ton of answers for Giannis himself but Giannis and Dame were the only people to score points for the bucks and they made it as difficult as they could Giannis finishes with 26 Dame finishes with 23 and no one else on the Bucks finished with more than 13 points and so this was still a great highlevel uh defensive effort put out by the Thunder and the Bucks were able to weather the storm and they were able to win this game I think the bigger question now is can the Bucks take this and move forward can we actually start seeing them as real contenders in the east at this point I you know they started out the season very shaky and they’ve been on quite a run here for the past month now month and a half I I don’t know if I’ve seen enough I don’t know if I trust this team enough to put them over things that we’ve seen with like the the Celtics or the Cavs but I don’t know I think especially with uh a lot of the injuries through the Orlando Magic and some of the ups and downs that we’ve seen with the New York Knicks I there’s no reason to believe that they can’t be fighting for a three seed or a four seed with with those other teams in the East and now for the Giannis conversation I think after this game a lot of people are going to correctly put him up into that mvp conversation I think right now most people would say up to this point it’s probably uh Nico yic but it’s really hard to argue with uh with Janis s DMO and how he’s been playing throughout this entire stretch here he has been playing some of the best basketball of his entire career he’s actually even started to add a little mid-range jumper he he had a pulled out a couple of those this evening as well and he’s uh stop shooting threes altoe which I think is uh good for all of us to be completely honest I think I’m still a little biased to just some of the historical stuff that uh yic is doing especially with the uh lack of surrounding talent but I don’t know uh it’s definitely fair to say that he has uh belongs inside of these MVP conversations and it’ll be really interesting to see how far this Bucks team can go and if they can keep this hot streak that they’re on um going for the rest of the season now the last thing that I need to talk about um here one sec there we go got my credentials on now a lot of trade rumors a lot of trade rumors with one uh Jimmy G buckets G stands forgets and the Phoenix Suns um I’m not exactly sure how I feel about this one because I don’t even know if a trade like this would be possible uh contracts need to match and we are sons are way over that second second apron which means there are a whole lot of trade restrictions that I don’t even know all the details of um secondly the Bradley Beal would almost have to be in this deal and Bradley Beal has a no trade clause and so he would have to thumbs up the trade and I don’t really know it’s hard to say if Bradley be would be up for that now you know the the non-basketball uh part of this is that pretty sure Bradley Beal and Bam are really good friends and so maybe that could help out with the deal but I don’t know even in a basketball sense like thinking about the Suns team when Kevin Durant is on the floor I think we are a 12 and two as a team 13- two something like that with him off the floor I believe we are one- n because what happens when Kevin Durant is off the floor is essentially we’ve got four guards running around and U and one Yousef nurkic when he’s healthy and he missed a couple games in there and so it was four guards and Mason plumbley the other team knows that Devon Booker is the only real scoring threat at that point they Blitz him on every single screen every single time he touches the ball and absolutely no offense can be generated and then we have no one on defense with enough size to slow down any kind of wing player and we’re also getting dominated on the boards the other part that has been really killing this team is just overall health Uh Kevin Durant Bradley Beal and Yousef nurkic have all missed extended time for this team and for the Suns to be effective we need them to be healthy and ready uh inside of our lineup the Suns need size and they need health and I don’t know if swapping out Bradley Beal for Jimmy Butler I I don’t know if that’s enough to necessarily move the kn I’m really concerned with the the depth of this team I think it’s very concerning that when we’re missing one player all of a sudden our team falls off a cliff the Suns I think if they actually want to contend in the west I think that this needs to be more of filling out more role players filling out more Wings getting more size on the team I’m thinking more of a a three for one type trade versus a one for one for a player like uh Jimmy Butler who’s definitely on the back half of his career here you’re not exactly sure what you’re going to get from an effort standpoint night to night uh you know when he’s when he’s motivated when he’s inspired to play there’s no doubt that he’s uh one of the Premier players in the NBA but I I don’t know if we’re going to get that every single night I don’t know if we’re going to get the same level of defense that we need he’s going to bring more size but he’s also had some his health concerns himself over the years and so I don’t know I I think one I really don’t think this deal is going to happen and two if it were to happen I I don’t know how much it’s moving the needle I really don’t know how much it’s moving the needle for the Suns and so I don’t know we we’ll see how it all pans out with the trade denline coming up but either way hope you guys enjoyed the episode hope you guys are enjoying this NBA season I know I am and I’m going to continue to try to bring more NBA content as the season goes on I know with the NBA cup here uh wrapping up and football season coming to the playoffs there might be a bit of a dry spell coming up but uh I’m excited I’m excited for the turn in this uh in this NBA season as we start getting uh closer to the allstar break it into a um into a playoff push and so yeah uh
