you know he did make up towards $8 million oel in his Heyday in Arizona but he was also a guy that was supposed to produce 15 20 goals a year and he did and he did he had a good stretch there for a while he did um no absolutely and I just like like I said you know I think that’s a good example so Morgan Rodney can’t go there he can’t go there this time in his career with a trle map Poli he’s what kind of oel the thoughts of oel were by Vancouver Canuck fans when he first arrived Gord um Kip knows sometimes I feel like uh Matthews gets a bit of a rough ride on this show I stick up for him a lot I’m I’m the Matthew’s Defender around here something’s not right you know it’s get I don’t know what your thoughts on are on how he’s looked lately if he needs another trip to Germany but right it just doesn’t seem like there’s the same level of physicality or tenacity or energy I don’t know what it is Gord what do you see am I crazy here what what’s kippy’s problem with Austin Matthews what’s your problem Kippy uh he doesn’t look anywhere near the second best player in the world that’s my problem high expectations do you think it’s because something’s going on physically I mean I I we never know but um I I have to think with all he’s done that he’s not 100% so yeah right now he’s not going to win the hard trophy or those kind of trophies right now but you know but you always want Austin Matthews in your light up to say the least so I will be a defender of Austin Matthews as well but but whatever the B and it was weird there was that Sideshow last year about him scoring 70 goals you know which I don’t think was healthy at the end of the year last year either heading into the playoffs you know trying to focus on that individual record so that that at least won’t be a worry this year and maybe maybe maybe maybe everything means better team-wise even though individual wise for some some players it isn’t quite the same yeah listen what are your thoughts because we didn’t talk about Matthews in the first we didn’t uh to your point it it just doesn’t seem like he’s all in right now he’s getting points maybe it’s physical maybe it is uh you know they never came clean on his injury and you know maybe he’s just not there I honestly I think he’s he lacks a little confidence right now Around the Net yeah he could be he just not of that he has lots of chances yeah he has lots of chances and sometimes they should be non chances sometimes I watch his rapper rounds and I’m going those aren’t working maybe back to the point or keep the play alive but you know there’s a fine line and and just to kind of touch a little bit on the Morgan Riley aspect that maybe there’s a level of expectance that he needs to be the guy that’s putting the puck in the net all the time and under this system maybe he’s not a a 60g goal scorer under Craig bruy system maybe maybe that might have something to do with it Kippy didn’t you lead the NHL in non chances one year do I remember correctly every year every year so wait a sec okay okay the CR what whatever you like let’s leave the 70 goals alone and that what you know what have you as I said as you just articulated Kippy if it means a better team concept I’m all for it I’m just you know Austin Matthews like uh it’s kind of like oie last year maybe like oetkin you know last year the start of the year he had a bit of a dry spell which was unusual not being 100% could be part of it but you know uh I I think I think that’s one you asked me Kippy starting off one of the best things I saw was how that team how Mitch Marner which wasn’t surprising how everybody jumped up in the absence of Austin Matthews and how they played as a team and May and maybe his absence and this time around how people stepped up might might be one of the best things that happened this season yeah absolutely are you good on that if I turn the page I am do do do you have a conclusion at all no but I I am concluding that he doesn’t look as effective as he has in the past my one thought is you know Marner hasn’t been as effective since Matthews has been back either do do we maybe want to go back to giving Marner his own line and see if Matthews can make it work somewhere else I don’t know do you is that a crazy thought no it’s not I and and the power play hasn’t looked as as I like that thought I like that thought I like that thought about you know just uh yeah that that that there’s a lot more options out there for Craig barui to try I think I like that thought very much yeah and getting McMahon back is a big one for me Gord like it he’s just got this great combination of speed and size he was physical and all of a sudden he takes a third line from being just the third line to a line that can produce and chip in a little bit do you think that’s what changed for domian Robertson is just getting someone on the wing who can kind of make some space and get some pucks wa well yeah you know someone’s got to get you the puck you’re right and and that could be it like so again but let’s throw another one back Justin about um just max petti now again if he can stay healthy is huge but what’s some impressed me about him it’s a very different stage of his career if you look back he had a really consistent run with the Montreal Canadians with 30 goal seasons and that he’s playing different now he’s playing more aggressive he’s he’s showing more snot that Brad TR living wants he understands like it’s a different setup here it’s a different kind of role and I I really admire those kinds of players that late in their career can say you know you know we see Cory Perry having done it that there there’s there’s a different component I got to try and stress now I know I have to say it’s incomplete a lot of it du to injuries because of him but that’s another option that really has intrigued me yeah for me now it’s just moving forward the reliability of both these guys and they have a lot of guys that you like but you’re nervous about go mcah McMahon’s Timmons McMahon into the playoffs this year on a couple occasions it’s like are you going to will you be there I don’t think anybody’s nervous on whether or not you could contribute or look effective when you’re in but can we count on you being there at the end well you know Justin it’s like it’s like when you’re single and you’re dating there’s a lot of girls you like but you’re nervous about right same thing ultimately ultimately you hope the right one comes around like it has for the three of us and we are blessed and uh and maybe maybe that’s how it plays out in a hockey sets it’s uh it is funny like just seeing Nick Robertson shoot the puck in the net have a good game being on a a part of an effective line you can see what it was supposed to look like going into this year like it was supposed to look like against Buffalo every third game maybe but I don’t know is it too late for him to salvage his season well not too late I I was disappointed that he wasn’t able to seize that opportunity playing you know playing a lot of games consistently getting decent ice time and you know it’s that’s all you always want you always say look I I want the chance I want the chance and I wouldn’t say he squandered the chance but he but he’s not embraced the chance so so so the line you’re talking about is like okay you know I I go back you know Gary vul got that Big Goal like 25 years ago okay who who can who can get that big goal in the playoffs that wins the series against the Philadelphia Flyers like he did or Pittsburgh whatever it was back then and move on like you know which one of them can get that timely goal that has been part of the the leaf scoring drought in the playoffs in recent years and it still is a bit it still is kind of an evaluation process I mean a couple years ago Michael bunting supplanted Nick Richie Nick Richie couldn’t do it Michael bunting he said okay man this guy this guy’s fitting in on the top six and he’s going to be your guy right now you still got a lot of feelers out there I mean I thought the analogy Brad to living used that we only got so many seats on the plane and we got more passengers than actual seats still applies okay before break I I I bet these guys that you couldn’t name four of Santa’s reindeer not four Gord you want to take your crack at it Rudolph Dasher Dixon um vixon Vixen Cy yeah you got that one wait wait come praner come come uh come Prancer come Vixen come Jimmy come ralie I don’t know man I gotta switch religion I’m on the wrong one here I got to start celebrating Richie potsy keep going you know what they are they’re Canadian reindeer boy oh boy I can only imagine the gifts that you’re giv I don’t what are they now I’m on the hot seat here I don’t know Dasher Don Dasher that’s right Doner dancer Dasher dancer was Prancer Prancer that’s right yeah vix um I think Valentine’s Day Cupid yeah there’s no Cupid yeah no way yeah what a bad handle Comet what you talking about uh it’s a aggressive to name a reindeer vixon I don’t know um all right okay we got to cut this off I don’t know this was your question not mine yeah okay I don’t know I’m gonna go to uh another Santa question for and dou great job as always pal have a great Christmas okay we’ll do hey Merry Christmas happy holidays to everybody and uh yeah uh fun as always thanks guys thanks all right don’t go away Jason York coming up Yorkie he’ll name all eight he’s a sharp guy sharp more with Yorkie as we go National on the real Kipper enborn show be right back the leaf Center dilemma who can strengthen the roster if you’re a Toronto Maple Leafs fan like me you know the team Center depth has been a constant concern this season with Austin Matthews set to return from a mysterious upper body injury next week the excitement of having our starback is palpable how however there are still serious issues to address in the center position to keep the team competitive and of course fuel our playoff dreams David Camp a key piece in the center rotation is sidelined with a lower body injury as if that weren’t enough Caye jro is still recovering from surgery leaving another Gap in the lineup Max doy expected to be a versatile asset has been placed on injured reserve further aggravating the situation after missing consecutive practices due to lingering pains to sum it up the Leafs are missing four functional centers and the pressure to act as mounting James Myrtle a respected Leafs analyst and contributor to the athletic highlighted a series of potential trade targets to address this dilemma during his appearance on the JD bunky podcast among the names mentioned two stood out Nick jugad and for the nostalgic fans a possible reunion with Ryan O’Reilly jugad seems to be Myrtle’s favorite and for good reason the player who signed a 2-year deal with the Utah Hockey Club last off season carries a manageable $2.1 million cap hit which is essential for a team as salary cap strapped as the Leafs additionally standing at 6′ 6 in and weighing 205 lbs he would bring not only physicality but also consistent offensive contributions jugad is the most viable option for the Leafs right now Myrtle stated on the podcast and he’s right experienced and versatile jugat has played for several teams including the Florida Panthers Pittsburgh Penguins Minnesota Wild and Edmonton Oilers and could quickly adapt to the Leaf’s dynamic with an affordable contract and a solid track record he offers a practical solution without sacrificing too many future assets however it’s impossible to ignore the possibility of a Ryan O’Reilly return Yes we know he chose the Nashville Predators last summer in search of a quieter environment but the Leaf’s management still holds him in high regard the 2019 Stanley Cup winning Captain with the St Louis Blues is precisely the type of player any Contender would love to have on their roster however the cost of bringing him back would be steep both in terms of trade assets and cap space adjustments as Nashville or a third team would need to retain part of his salary I don’t think the O’Reilly scenario is entirely Out Of Reach Myrtle said showing that there’s optimism within the organization however there are doubts about how much it’s worth investing in a 33-year-old player even with his impeccable credentials meanwhile cheaper internal options like Steven Lawrence Connor der pontis halberg and Fraser Minon have been mentioned but let’s be honest these names might serve as short-term stop gaps but they’re far from offering the stability and impact the team needs the pressure is all on GM Brad tring he knows that despite the Leaf’s solid performance so far the center position is crucial to sustaining any Championship aspirations with the trade deadline approaching TR living has likely intensified his efforts to finalize a deal and we the fans are eagerly awaiting good news for now all we can do is trust that the team can weather this tough phase and hope a solution whether it’s jugad O’Reilly or another name arrives before things spiral out of control after all as we all know the Leafs don’t have the luxury of wasting another season with a promising but incomplete roster the time to act is now the leaf Center dilemma expanding on the potential Solutions the Toronto Maple Leafs amidst another promising yet tumultuous season face one of their most pressing challenges addressing a depleted Center lineup That threatens to derail their momentum while the return of Austin Matthews is a Beacon of Hope the broader picture remains dire requiring urgent action from the front office with Camp J Croc and DOI sidelined the team’s depth has been stretched thin the immediate impact is clear on both ends of the ice defensively the Leafs are struggling to suppress opposing top lines without reliable two-way centers offensively Puck distribution and power play setups have been less dynamic as the makeshift lineups lack the same chemistry this imbalance underscores the necessity for reinforcements Nick jugad as highlighted by James Myrtle presents the most realistic trade option his affordable contract and towering physical presence align perfectly with the Leaf’s needs Beyond his imposing stature jugad brings versatility he can play both Center and Wing a flexibility that would allow head coach Sheldon Keefe to adjust the lineup dynamically however acquiring jug stat isn’t without complications the Utah Hockey Club formerly the Arizona Coyotes is currently rebuilding but may still demand a premium return for their experienced forward the Leafs will likely need to part with a mid-tier Prospect or draft pick to make the deal work with their Prospect pool already thin tring faces a tough decision another name that excites fans and analysts alike is Ryan O’Reilly the former con SMI winner and Stanley Cup champion has a proven track record of elevating teams in high-stake situations his leadership during his brief stint with Toronto last season left a lasting impression yet the Predators have little incentive to move him unless the offer is overwhelming should the Leafs pursue O’Reilly it would almost certainly require a multi-asset package a first round pick and a promising young player like Nick Robertson might need to be part of the conversation additionally Nashville would have to retain salary a process that often involves a third party team to facilitate the logistics are challenging but not insurmountable internal options like pontis halberg and Fraser Minon offer short-term relief but lack the experience needed for a deep playoff run halberg has shown flashes of potential but his limited NHL exposure raises questions about his readiness for a consistent role Minon while promising is still developing and would be better served continuing his growth in the miners a wild card option could be exploring European leagues or waiver claims to unearth an Overlook Talent teams like the Vegas golden knights and Colorado Avalanche have found gems in unconventional ways and the leaf scouting Department may need to cast a wider net to uncover an affordable immediate solution another Factor complicating the Leaf’s decisions is the looming salary cap crunch with Matthew’s extension set to kick in soon Toronto must be mindful of every Financial commitment adding a high- price center now could limit flexibility during the offseason forcing tring to juggle short-term needs against long-term sustainability trade timing will also play a pivotal role acting quickly could stabilize the team and prevent further slip UPS in the standings but it may come at the cost of negotiating leverage alternatively waiting closer to the deadline could yield better deals as selling teams grow more desperate the risk however is enduring several more weeks of uncertainty Sheldon Keefe’s role in navigating this storm can’t be overstated his ability to extract maximum effort from an injury riddled lineup will be crucial Keef has already experimented with unconventional line combinations but the lack of true centers limits is tactical options a new acquisition would provide the stability he needs to implement a more structured game plan the Leaf’s locker room has remained resilient through adversity with veterans like John tarez and Morgan really stepping up as vocal leaders however even their efforts may not enough to overcome the absence of Key Personnel reinforcements are not just a luxury they’re a necessity for fans the anxiety is palpable after years of playoff heartbreak this season feels like another chapter in The Saga of unmet expectations yet there’s cautious optimism the team has shown glimpses of Brilliance and the addition of a solid Center could be the missing piece that transforms them from contenders to genuine threats as the trade rumors swirl one thing is certain the next few weeks will be critical in shaping the leaf season whether it’s jugad O’Reilly or an unexpected name the decision made by Brad TR living and his staff could Define not just this campaign but the team’s trajectory for years to come for now we wait hopeful that the Leafs will seize the moment and finally deliver on their immense potential will the Leafs make their move as the speculation intensifies the Leaf’s fan base is holding its Collective breath waiting for signs of a breakthrough
