could we see a potential Blockbuster deal between the Vancouver Canucks and the Buffalo Sabers on this morning’s 32 thoughts podcast Elliot Freedman did his best to set Vancouver’s social media on fire with his idea to help both struggling franchises we’ll discuss what it can mean for both teams who says no we’ll discuss our thoughts coming up next so welcome back to another video here at topshelf hockey as I mentioned we’re today we’re talking about an idea discussed from NHL Insider Elliot Freeman on his brand new edition of the 32 thoughts podcast which was released this morning of course on all platforms uh uh he had a wild idea that I’m sure set Vancouver social media on fire with the thoughts of a blockbuster deal between the kaks and the sabes now I want to get full disclosure out there Elliot is not saying that these two teams are discussing this deal he’s not saying he has any intel to suggest this is going to happen this is just something he said that after everything both of these teams have been through we know the sabes uh you know of course longest drought in the NHL for not being in the playoffs I’ve had a 10 game losing streak they had a players only meeting this morning in Montreal they canceled practice owner Terry Pula is on his way to meet with the team you got to expect changes are coming there’s been talk that they’re getting a lot of interest in the players that are being being discussed in this video so it’s just a matter of saying okay the team is at a Crossroads here they’re in desperate for something good to happen they need change what’s it going to be you know you’re probably going to see a a big trade of some sort to try to shake things up it’s pretty likely hard to say exactly who what and where when it’s going to happen on Vancouver’s side now they’re not in the same predicament here as the Sabers they’re much more likely team to be in the playoffs but this rate they’ve taken a step back from last year uh we know that they’ve had some rough games recently and of course there’s been a lot of talk around the JT Miller personal leave of absence and a lot of speculation on a relationship between himself and other top sterman leas Pon now it’s no secret that it really appears that there’s enough evidence and then we can’t confirm it 100% it’s just based on what all the comments are around quars and kind of what you see it does seem like those two don’t exactly have the great relationship elas Patterson has played completely differently in Miller’s absence compared to when Miller’s there but they also have a long history of playing together it’s not like they became brand new teammates last week and decided they didn’t like each other this is not players that are new to each other and finding out that that’s the case this is a completely different scenario they’ve been teammates now for quite some time and you know maybe I don’t sure how long this has been going on at the end of the day though this Blockbuster deal that’s been proposed by fredman he thinks you know might be something that he realistically thinks could happen just based off of where the teams are at like I said not based off Intel however I will caution this just a little footnote I found in the past a lot of time NHL insiders have put out ideas like this you know making sure they disclose it as this is not Intel I have this is not inside info this is just my own opinion my own thoughts I wonder what this you know if this something like this might happen so when they do that sometimes they do have a little bit of Intel but maybe they’re not really willing to put it out there and kind of put their name on it just yet so they spin it a different way now again not saying that I think that either I’m just saying I’ve seen that in the past so take that for what you will the odds of this trade go going down are probably very slim this is really just for discussion purposes the way this was framed in the podcast the way he talked about it with co-host KOB boscus is who says no do you think either team would say no to this deal or if they did get together and discuss it do you think it would happen would they come to terms and pull the trigger and that’s kind of where we’re at here so the proposed trade was the Vancouver conect trading top centerman Elias pson and his long-term contract of course it comes with them just recently signed an 8-year deal at 11.6 million bucks per season over to the Buffalo Sabers in exchange for one of their top centerman Dylan cousins and one of their top defenseman Bowen Byrum so it’s an interesting concept we know the Sabres have been getting calls and interest in both of those players uh it’s kind of at a point with cousins I seriously wonder if a fresh start is going to be necessary uh um but yeah that’s the proposed idea sounds crazy I know lots of big names involved here but hey let’s let’s break it down and look at it and come to terms on what we think and what team would say no or would both teams be like yeah you know what this sounds good let’s do it okay from Vancouver’s perspective okay you’ve got Alias penderson 26 years old $1.6 million for the foreseeable future until 2032 uh you know that takes him through all pretty well all his prime years still his early 30s okay previously two years back which is probably the season that really got him this contract he was a 100o player put up 102 points in 2223 follow that up in 2324 with 89 points he did miss a couple of games a little bit fewer points but not you know not like it’s a bad season by any means but you know at the end of the day it is a little bit less 2425 he’s got 26 points in 29 games which puts him one pays for about 73 and mathematically works it to be around 73 and a half so 73 to 74 points that’s another big jump down that’s 15 points roughly less than last year last year you know was 13 points less than the year before so that’s 28 points less than two years ago Pon is not trending in the right direction if you take a look at how things have gone in Vancouver with the whole Miller thing was gone for approximately 4 weeks with this leave of absence P’s game really got a lot better production was up the play was up he seems to be different when Miller’s around the lot know it’s only been a couple games since Miller’s been back but Pon again doesn’t seem to be quite the same guy again like it’s almost like he be I see fan some now there’s there’s a division out there and there seems to be people taking sides on who they like better and who they don’t who they think the conu should move and who they shouldn’t and all that some people call them pouty pey I don’t know I guess at the end of the day the con knocks need to decide is this relationship at a point where we need to move somebody or not that’s a big question and secondly if they feel like they have to you got to look at a couple of things one Peterson’s much younger than Miller we’re looking at was a 5 to six year difference here okay so P’s much younger he also makes more money you know his contract was done a little bit more recent so it takes it a little bit longer but they’re both signed long term right now um you know depending on where they see their team’s kind of window to potentially win which might be on the contract of Quinn Hughes it’s hard to say you know they have to think short term like they they ideally see themselves as close to contending now uh we know last year they were they thought they could contend or they wouldn’t have spent all these um different assets trying to pick out players and getting zadorov and lenol this year they have taken a bit of a step back they’re not playing as well they’re not getting the results and you know to some degree like there seems to be some internal stuff going on you know Miller was gone for a month on his own accord I think to some degree teams have seen this version of the conects under Rick tet long enough that they figured out for one they figured that this team is the real deal they’re legit like when teams first tend to improve I think they kind of catch people by surprise I think teams don’t always give their a game to every opponent every night and I think teams have realized that this conu team is good enough that you can’t play your Bame and win you’re going to lose those more often than not so they’re getting probably better effort you know less backup goon there’s lots of things like that that are in affecting the opponent’s side of things and then also over time teams figure out your style your play your systems and what is the best way to combat that how do they defend you how do they attack you to expose certain things you you know talk has been there long enough that they’ve teams to think have made adjustments to how he hasn’t playing to how they can counteract things better that’s natural that’s how things go over time that’s why you constantly have to be creative and Ever Changing and ever evolving and if you get too stagnant and you don’t change things up you’re going to become predictable you become predictable you’re not going to be effective it’s just that simple so you know do they they get to ask themselves okay not only is the contract not only is their age who can you win with can you win with Alias pson yes he’s a talented player he’s got high-end skill there’s no doubt putting up a 100 Point season two years ago was no fluke he’s been a talented player in the league now for an extended time the other big thing on P’s contract is he has a full no move Clause that kicks in when next season starts next season by calendar is July 1st so if you were ever going to trade him and didn’t want to have to ask him to wave sometime between now and July is the time to do it if you think you need to do that based on comments from Jim Rutherford he went out of his way to defend JT Miller on this leave of absence and made sure publicly that he went out and emphatically said we are not trading JT Miller we support JT Miller we stand with JT Miller all all these things so not saying he needed to do anything for Pon cuz he didn’t he was there he was playing whatever but they just don’t seem like a team to me that wants to trade JT Miller although we’ve heard lots of times about the Rangers and other teams inquiring trying to see if they can primy him out of there either way Miller’s a good player too different style different personality they don’t seem to click and can they coexist does the team have to make a move I don’t really know how they feel in the inner workings of that team but it’s getting to a point where obviously well connected people are starting to ask those questions so it’s become an interesting point of discussion on the Buffalo side of it you’ve got bow and Byrum pending restricted free agent and not all that far from being a UFA and according to Elliot fredman has made it known that he thinks he’s good enough on a lot of teams to be a number one top pair defenseman he knows in Buffalo on the left side he’s also got Owen power and rosmus Dalene playing ahead of him so couple of things for one he’s good enough he’s not a third pair guy and to play up higher in the lineup you’ve got three left shot guys somebody’s playing on their offside right so do the Sabers want to pay by him because that’s the other thing he’s he needs a new contract here soon they’ve already given dolling and power uh a lot of long-term and big money they’ve signed Matias samelson who’s a different kind of defenseman righty you know he signed longterm Byrum’s making 385 now he’s putting up 18 points in 31 games so far this year so he’s probably going to be at least a 40 if not 50 point defenseman and he’s not even playing the most minutes on the team although he has played a lot of minutes here recently he’s going been kind of his role has been expanding with this team and like I said with free Freeman saying that one of his things that seems to be important to him from what he’s hearing is that he wants to have the opportunity to be top pair defenseman he thinks he’s good enough and wants the opportunity to play a big role so will he get that in Buffalo and does Buffalo want to pay him which is why his name is coming up into rumor Mills combination of those two things now I know they gave up Casey midat to get bym and I don’t see them like they’re I mean obviously bm’s not UFA yet so it’s not like he’s going to walk but that’s why there’s a lot of you know people wondering if he would get moved when it comes to Dylan cousins Dylan cousins is a great player in his own right but has had some mighty struggles he’s 23 years old he’ll be 24 in February he’s making 7.1 million he’ll be a young UFA at age 29 uh which is six years away um if you take a look at his breakout year which was two years ago which is what got him that contract he had 31 goals and 68 points looked like he was well on his way being a really solid number two if not potential number one centerman who could get you 30 plus goals and you know probably looking at if he Peaks maybe at 80 90 points well then that hasn’t happened he’s been nothing but regression since then statistically I mean from what I’ve seen a little bit I think there’s a little bit of unluckiness there as well but looking at last year he regressed at 18 goals and 47 points and this year you know he’s on Pace you know for even less so he’s got 13 points in 31 games things are just not clicking for him um you know they moved him around in different spots in the lineup too and I I I don’t know he just seems like he’s a prime candidate for a fresh start but like I’ve said the Sabres need to be careful here because they’ve moved a lot of guys that were in their Prime and went on to be big time players and Stanley Cup champions elsewhere if you look at your all Sabers team for players that have been moved in The Last 5 Years there’s some good players out there including Sam Reinhardt and Jack hiel different set of circumstances but still you know players that you would think under the right circumstances would still be Sabers and would be helping lead this team into being a a consistent playoff team by now it’s been 14 years it’s not like they haven’t had their fair share of draft lottery lock they have two defenseman on their roster that were drafted first overall you know eichel and Reinhardt were both top couple picks in the draft like they had their opportunities there this team has been mismanaged for a long time um and it needs change again unfortunately I didn’t really ever thought Kevin Adams was the right guy I don’t know what they got to do there but something to shake things up if the sabes and the Canucks had discussions about this trade do the Sabers say no I don’t think they do I think they say We’ll gladly take aias pon and help him figure things out former 100o player his what he’s already done at a younger age is more than either of these guys have done we might have to trade by them anyway and this gets us a legit number one center now your Tage Thompson and leus pson are your top two centers how good is that you get a lot of money tied up there but they’re both well worth it if they give you their best and they play their and be the best versions of themselves on the Vancouver side of it you lose Pon from a money standpoint it works from a cap perspective because cousins money and by’s money add up to being pretty close to what Peterson’s making it’s just a little bit less um but Byrum’s going to need a raise now they both have ties to that area they’re both Western Canadian kids I know Dylan cousins technically from White Horse but I do believe he spent some time playing in the Lower Valley of Vancouver uh and of course bym connected there as well I don’t know what their thoughts are what Byrum’s thoughts are he’d be playing behind Quinn Hughes he want a Stanley Cup playing behind kale Mur but again if what fredman is saying is the most important to him and I don’t know what it is of being a top pair defenseman he’s probably not going to be that in Vancouver but he’d be a really really good second pair defenseman how much money is it going to take to lock him up do you consider doing that you have Hughes you have ronic you know would Byron be the third there to lock up longterm as well maybe you just got to be really really careful moving pson you know like he is a you know a franchise centerman if he’s if he’s playing his best and giving you those 100 Point campaigns you know will Dylan cousins be that 30 goal 68 75 Point player consistently like you saw a couple years ago that to me comes with a little bit of risk if you can get cousins a little bit cheaper because of as lack of production I would feel better about the deal so like they said in the podcast Kyle and Elliot said If either team says no here it’s probably Vancouver and I have to agree I don’t know that Vancouver does that I think that the sabes might have to sweeten this further either um either instead of Byrum you ask for power because I don’t think they’d include Dalene you ask for power and maybe they try to pay bym to be again a really good second pair defenseman behind darene or one of them plays their offside and he becomes dal’s part you know maybe he stays and they they they form the top pair for the next seven eight years I don’t know like that’s a possibility like you either talk to them about including power and they keep by him um which some would see maybe as an upgrade power probably better defensively and maybe instead of cousins you ask for Tompson and you hope that cousins remains your number two centerman and figures it out and you get peton cousins instead of pson Thompson does Vancouver make that deal it’s probably more likely but that seems like now I wonder if Buffalo does the deal you know if it’s going to take that much so because of that this is a very very difficult trade the logistics are difficult both teams would have a lot of risk reward here to look at I don’t know as presented by fredman in his thoughts I think they canak say no I think they’d want more I think they like Byron but they’d have to be sure they could extend them I think they like cousins but be concerned that he bounces back to be what they think he can be you know and with Pon being so young if they keep Miller and move Pon then it shortens their window because Miller is much older and if but if they think that that kind of trade can help them be a Stanley Cup champion within the next couple years I know Jim Rutherford and Patrick Alvine are pretty aggressive I say they probably do it if they think that’s the outcome although I’m not entirely convinced it would be and I think as presented they say no but let me know what you think is Elliot’s idea really crazy who says no Vancouver or Buffalo or do they say yes would both teams pull the trigger let me know what you think down in the comments and we’ll discuss further I’ll be back a little bit later recapping the rest of the NHL news and whatever other trade rumors are out there floating around that we can discuss so let me know your thoughts on this one and we’ll be back for more content later on thanks very much for watching and I will catch you next time [Music]
