what’s up guys how we doing all right 14 games in the regular season now calling plays what’s the one thing that you’ve learned about calling plays at the um I think you look at the difference maybe in some some changes people make in game a little bit from an adjustment standpoint um you look at making sure you have enough football in the plan that all right you come out first half first couple drives this is what we’re getting this is what we’re doing this is how we’ve attacked them thus far okay in the short period of time that you have at halftime to talk about adjustments and make them well you’ve kind of cut down on the adjustments if you just have like the volume in in terms of okay well we haven’t even run these six plays we can get to these that we really like if we continue to get this look if we so it’s more just the volume that you’re allowed to carry in the National Football League just gives you a little bit more I guess you could say ammo for the second half or maybe when you have to do make some adjustments as a staff which I think our guys have done a nice job of this far so I think just preparation and then ingame just making sure we have clear concise communication and understand what we’re trying to do and how we want to get to it how hard is it for you now where your name continually comes up as you know the hot offensive coordinator for these head coaching jobs and you know how hard is that man to just concentrate on this not extremely difficult at the moment I’ll be honest I mean it’s it’s there’s literally one goal and that’s the only one I really hate to sound PC but that’s the truth I mean there’s just no time in the day I got a kid sick throwing up at home last night I I mean there’s just no time to even truly think about these things I mean obviously is that a goal is that a dream yeah but that’s not at all what’s on my mind right now and um the the one thing is how how are we going to try to go score points uh and stop Michael parsons’s in this game on Sunday Night Football that’s truly uh where the focus is that’s where it has to be and um you really don’t have enough time to to think otherwise right now if it were any one thing I’m sure you kind of would have solved it but mean you guys have had a bunch of games where there’s a second quarter low or a second quarter maybe even worse than that we turnovers have been a problem I don’t know if that’s the window past when scripted plays are out or when that’s when opponents can first start making adjustments but why do you think he guys have hit that snag I don’t know I don’t know it’s kind of a weird deal I I I guess I haven’t looked that far into it more just okay we you know throw a pick on a you know guy makes a good play throws behind routes a little short on a on a play that you know we’ve it’s day one install training camp and then we fumble going for extra yardage but I do understand what you mean by some of the second quarter stuff um I don’t really know uh I think it’s maybe I don’t know if we’re letting up a little bit or hey we get a little lead and maybe we’re maybe not as hungry in some moments or maybe not as focused um but I don’t think we we get arrogant by any means I don’t think it’s that mentality um you know we’re still trying to do it for four quarters I think that’s what kind of everybody still at this moment in time is still trying to do is do it uh clean for four quarters and against other NFL teams sometimes that’s not easy and um you know ultimately we want to play four quarters of our cleanest football but uh the good thing is we get to continue to strive to do so how proud are you of the Run game and where it’s come and where it is right now and the success you’ve had with all the backs in particular a rookie that could end up rushing for a thousand yards which doesn’t always happen right yeah it’s you know it’s a testament to to the to the staff to the guys that have done a you know a lot of work in trying to get this thing um you know on his feet where we wanted it to go um and to the Buy in from the players and their ability to go execute at a high level so um when you look at like I mentioned last week the the Run game if you just have a little bit of a tweaking mindset from all 11 right it can’t just be the guys up front it can’t just be the guys running the ball it’s got to be all 11 mindset and I think that’s what you’re you’re probably more proud of is is seeing the way that the guys respond the way that these guys want to run the football um and it’s a testament to that I think that this off to go through this season young guys stepping up rookies stepping up is that paying off now I would think so I mean you look at the Jaylen McMillan of the world right you look at some of those guys the Sterling Shepherds that continues to you know to make plays um it’s definitely paid off for us I would say I mean there’s when you go through the walkthroughs and practice you just see and sense a little bit more of like a less brighte mentality from some of the guys where they’re not hearing the the play call for the first time or or we’ve maybe done something prior that hits their brain already I mean you just start to see a little bit more continuity in chemistry with some of those guys that have had to step up into major roles and it’s definitely paying off for us I think this late in the season for sure played whole game against the Chargers but you know this is a DMP yesterday and was on the side was like today in the event that he could not go to Sunday you talk about you co ke and Co and P durm and what those tight ends kind of bring their skill set you know what they br to your offense yeah I think there’s a physicality that they that for sure those first two you know with Payne and Co that has helped us be able to run the football in a lot of ways and then in turn have helped us in the play action game when we had to have those guys staying in play action and protection uh they’ve done a nice job and then you know obviously Devon hasn’t been able to to do much for us this year but if he’s up and that’s the way we go I think um he’ll answer the he’ll answer the toll I believe so I mean you go back and look at some of the preseason things that he did well had a good day of practice today so um if that’s the case you know have a have a lot of faith in those guys and helping us be able to move the ball to go win win this game you mentioned Jaylen McMillan what can you say about his ability to really finish his routes and just kind of the growth that he’s had over the past few weeks yeah like I mentioned last week it starts with Jay Mack out here when he’s locked in and you can see his intentionality throughout the walkthroughs the practices the meetings it typically rolls over for him on Sundays for a good day and and uh that’s where he’s been trending that’s where what he’s been doing and then you go out and see him catch a few balls on the first drive obviously the touchdown but second play of the game he catches an in Cut goes and tries to make a play with it um I’ve just love really enjoyed his play energy um he’s just got a good way about him he’s always brought energy and and juice to the Huddle and now you’re able to see it come to life a little bit more and in in live games so that’s been really helpful for us when you took this job how much of Baker made was going to be your quarterback and established Star Quarterback how much of that was the decision that led you here and then are you guys at the point where you’re almost like sharing your brain out D you’re seeing things the same way I would say it it obviously had a lot to do with it even though I I wanted to be here kind of regardless in in that time I mean this was an opportunity that definitely could not pass up regardless of the quarterback situation although that was um you know very nice cherry on top when it ended up working out that way but and and then I would say over the last few weeks you’ve just even when there’s mistakes or things happen like you don’t need to go and uh rip him during a game he’s kind of ticked enough and you have enough communication where you let him cool off or let him kind of talk to other people then come back together and collaborate on things but um yeah it’s been a great collaboration with him over the last few weeks really over the whole year in in in a whole but um when he plays like he did the other day when his feet and his timing and his rhythm and he’s still and he’s calm and everything’s good man it it there’s not many people that can throw it as good as him your favorite part about this oh man um I think doing it obviously you know you go in in LA right I’m not the I’m the offensive coordinator by title but it’s it’s not really my offense I guess you could say even though you’re part you’re a strong part of it and then you go to college and okay well this works here that’s cool it works and then you go to this back to the NFL and you’re with a group of guys that you know have had success obviously a lot of success in this building um but you’re trying to help it grow you’re trying to help get better in a way and I think that’s probably what’s been the most fun is just seeing the Improvement uh from the guys when you can still make really good players better um and trying to get the most out of them I think that’s kind of what the most fulfilling part of the job is um is when the guys show growth and and they can kind of look at you and know that you’re doing everything that you can as a staff to help them get better as a pro there still a lot of season in this season left right and a lot of goal all your goals are still there but regardless when you look at this team why why is pro football so good for you right now and do you see this team as as a window that’s you’re going to be good for a while you have second or third youngest a quarterback that’s under contract you look at that and go we can get a super bowl out of this one day hopefully yeah that’s goal right I mean that’s the goal like you said right now and and you look at some of the pieces in place that we have when you have an offensive line playing the way that it is with some of the youth that is there still existing and then okay you got a stable of backs that you feel good about being able to run the football and a ton of good players and Personnel around you it’s absolutely a place that you’d want to be for sure so I do think there’s success to be had I think that these guys still know it still hasn’t been you know up to where we’re truly trying to go and I think that’s the beauty of it is um you can go win games have fun doing it um but come back to work and understand that we still haven’t played our best for four quarters and uh what’s that going to look like the off was n for 15 on third Downs on Sunday and it’s kind of done well in that regard throughout the year what do you think has allowed you to kind of have success there yeah I think first of all um you know shout out really to you know Josh Grizz and a bunch really the staff in general um I think it’s done a phenomenal job all throughout the whole year but the guys that are in charge of like those areas right Dad Lewis is in charge of the Red Zone bmax in charge of twom minute and you know Grizz happens to be in charge of third downs and you know their ideas I mean a lot of their ideas and and plays and thoughts and um scheme is what does come to life like what you guys see on Sunday not definitely not all those plays just come right from me right we have a full staff that these guys put a lot of work into those areas and then I think so being able to operate a little bit in terms of maybe one week we’re operating on man Zone cans maybe one week we’re operating off of you know allpurpose call it and run it plays mixing in some of those different um I guess criteria we call it and giving our guys the best POS you know putting them in the position to be successful and then oh by the way those guys going out and execu I think our offensive line the way that they’ve been able to protect especially in some of those shorter third of you know seven wins we’ve protected at a pretty high level and the ball’s able to come out still so I think that’s probably the combination and when you have Mike Evans usually it goes well too collaboration with Baker Mayfield but you also spoke about the coaches what kind of collaboration do you guys have during the week yeah I mean that’s we’re in an offensive staff room for hours and hours on end man we’re not probably uh in our own offices all that much I’ll be honest I mean it’s it’s full collaboration um every coach is you know very involved in every every sort of piece of the plan um you know so that there’s no time where guys I didn’t know that or this wasn’t the case you try to have as much collaboration and communication so um you know any coach at any time can make a play better or say hey maybe that isn’t something we should do at this point in the season we have a play it’s similar to that well let’s just do this I think having that chemistry um and cohesiveness on the staff has been really helpful could you uh talk a little bit about the D dramatic Improvement in the Run game and how much is due to the new guys talking about Graham talking about Bucky breson how has that all work to to to improve so dramatically yeah I think definitely getting some of those pieces uh and adding them to an already talented group especially in the middle when you know Graham who can uh athletically play in space while also move people inside there that’s been helpful with is also being somebody that can get a little bit of a a thump into the defense and when you add a back in there that can also make people Miss in space but I just think like you have the guys that were here that were kind of hungry for for to run the ball better and hungry for um that next step when it comes to running the football and that’s like I mentioned before not just the old line that’s all 11 involved in that so the pieces definitely helped but I think as a core the group everybody was yearning for for maybe a little bit more success in that area and so that carried over when we got some of those pieces the guys that were already here that kind of messed together and it worked out pretty well that way okay thank you
