[Music] all right let’s bring this week home on the real Kipper and born show this is the leaf hour edition on this Friday Nick kios Justin Bourne hello Sammy mcke Dereck brand and just Jake Schultz just Jake no didn’t get a nickname today no nickname today I’ve been just really impressed with him recently so we’re dropping the serpent for now we are live on Sports at 590 the fans Sports at 360 and sports step plus we go large on the Toronto Maple Leafs in this hour and then the top of the hour we’ll welcome in Doug mlan for a little off the rails and also Jason bua will join us to put a big ribbon on this week beautiful so just not Friday Friday the 13th oh it is are you guys like those type of guys to go a little slower today or ah no no it it is funny you mention this because as you guys both know I am very Jinx wary and yes extremely you’ll go home the same way yeah I’m very like when it comes to sports I’m very like I respect the hockey Gods deeply deeply deeply deeply and I don’t know if you want to get into this right away but I feel like I should address it because I’ve been getting barbecued on all social medias because of this but I said this about Anthony stolar I think on Wednesday’s show and this talking about Friday the 13th all you listen just listen are you super are you superstitious listen to this clip listen to this clip and I’m two and a half million bucks like I think they’ve already got their money’s worth yeah if he never plays again if he stopped playing tomorrow which I hope he doesn’t the contract was worth it they got nine wins out of them already oh my God are you nuts are you nuts I honestly like I so sorry hockey Gods it’s my fault I like I will never like everybody tweeting me being like it’s your fault I agree totally my fault I’m sick my favorite Leaf of the year my favorite story of the year I go out there I start talking like that I’m getting too confident and they smite me we were talking about him being up with uh Bill barilo and Tim Horton up in the rafters and legends Row the pictures with his name up on the Rafters was the it’s what did it the nail yeah T whoever one of your friends made that they did it as mentioned Anthony stoler’s injury kind of overshadows a win Max Patra had a big night I’m not sure that we’ll get to it in the next hour based on watching Anthony stolar uh go down last night and uh not one of those where right away we’re all sitting there going oh that was bad that one kind of just snuck up on us a little bit but those are the worst right are they well I think it’s it’s better when you see some sort of impact and you go oh that’s where it happened you tweak this but when something just kind of goes something just kind of quits on a guy I think that’s a little bit more scary although it sounds like Kip and I don’t want to put words in your mouth you’re maybe not as concerned today as uh as we were initially why don’t we go to head coach Craig bruy who spoke on Anthony stolar today and we’ll start with his update first C your uh golender and his status good well we got I thought we got good news on him um dayto day right now obviously didn’t go on the ice today but um you know we’ll see tomorrow if he can get out there do you expect next week what’s that do you expect him back next week still ours yeah um I yeah I do but you know in saying that like again he’s got to get on the ice and you know we but it’s it was good news overall so let’s just leave it at that it’s right now it’s dayto day oh we were fine up until he gave us the dreaded day to day day to day day to day today’s not the day tomorrow’s probably not the day either but it’ll be a day it is a day don’t read into anything like that it’s a day that’s could be this day could be a lot of days from now is it the Austin Matthews three and a half weeks day today is it the Jake McCabe five games day today that’s not for today this is this is the exact problem in saying that guys don’t have issues with like their injuries or not being forthcoming with your injuries because every single person as soon as another guy gets hurt and you say it’s not serious and it’s dayto day I don’t believe you it’s not right I don’t believe you I don’t I don’t have any trust in you I don’t think there’s any way that it’s actually dayto day I I truly believe that they’re going to see him in February like I I I don’t I have zero trust in the organization being fourth right out any of this now yeah they’ve lost me so I this does not make me this update does not make me feel any better about it does not change my perspective at all here’s the good news so far with all the injuries for the most part I’m not talking about every guy and there’s uh Camp who’s been out for quite a while and then yarn Croc they never told us day-to-day with him did they did they start out dayto day with him no the day to-day guys were Matthews okay and uh Matthews and uh but they have recently avoided the he’s going to be out a while or week to week so I do believe that they believe that we don’t know if it’s going to be two days or 21 days right so far which I’m sorry I I can’t I can’t go on your side in terms of you know they’re lying yeah they don’t know they just don’t know okay okay the one thing that uh we did the game last night um and the one thing that needs to kind of be stressed here is that this guy has got some knee knee injury issues bat knee right knee both knees both knees both knees that’s uh too many but one probably a little bit more he’s had multiples surgeries uh it got to the point where he almost he lost a year he L Valle remember the valley Story how much smaller the one leg was than the other and all that stuff yeah it’s been an ongoing challenge for him his whole career here are his knees I think May what happened last night is that he felt something and he may have gotten spooked a little bit yeah and he just precautionary reasons took himself out of the lineup great call please God let you be right about that yeah he then goes gets some further testing either last night or this morning today they come back they say fine structurally you’re fine so and then like Mike madano they dropped the stretcher he was on and his knee snapped that’s one of the best Clips all time it PO let it settle take a couple of days off don’t think we’ll see him this week and you’re you you should be fine okay that’s how I read the tea leaves today but okay but but he is a guy who has had knee is issues okay now we’re getting the big picture stuff we are okay he is a guy who’s had knee issues and he felt a little some some discomfort in a knee the first time that they said let’s go back to back here with him and see what he’s got if he can be the guy so does it change how you feel about him and what had become the goal tending situation was it felt like his net as 1A with W as 1B to answer your question yes I do feel differently I’m not going to pull a a Sam mck or Don Cherry and need to go back to the tape of what I said uh the other day but I do believe in some way shape or form besides the scheduling look at where you want him and wall to fall into game started over the weekend it was a chance to have a bit of a test here for him and unfortunately he did not pass the test but which in in itself can tell you how you want to move with him moving forward yeah I think based on this I don’t know if you can ever Envision stolar being a guy that can play every other night for four weeks six six weeks to six to eight weeks to win a Stanley Cup to think that he could take that type of uh the Toronto Maple Leafs may be taking a new approach to salary management which could directly impact Mitch marner’s contract negotiations during Kyle du’s tenure as general manager the team didn’t hesitate to spend heavily and this trend began with a six-year extension signed by Marner in 2019 at the time marner’s $10.9 million annual cap hit set the market for Superstar Wingers surpassing comparable players like Miko Ronan of the Colorado Avalanche who signed a 6-year deal with a 9.25 $5 million annual cap hit now however times seem to be changing tsn’s Pier LeBron recently reported that the Maple Leafs have implemented an internal salary cap aiming to ensure no player earns more than Captain Austin Matthews who signed a 4-year extension worth 13.25 million per season in August 2023 the team’s primary concern revolves around marner’s agent Darren Ferris who according to LeBrun might push for a percentage of the total salary cap instead of a fixed dollar amount this could result in marner’s cap hit exceeding Matthew’s $13.25 million conflicting with a Leaf’s new Financial strategy Ferris is known for driving negotiations to the Limit often taking his clients to free agency this raises fears that discussions between Marner and the Leafs could drag on until July 1st giving Marner and his Camp all the leverage in negotiations another complicating factor is the rising market LeBron noted that Miko Ronin believes he could secure $14 million per season as a free agent this Sparks the question could Mar Mar demand even more and would Ferris take that gamble knowing the Leafs might opt to move on and sign another player Marner has made it clear on multiple occasions that Toronto is where he wants to be as a local player with deep ties to the city he’s expressed his desire to spend his entire career wearing the blue and white of the Leafs however staying with the team may require him to accept less than market value especially if the front office remains committed to its new salary structure such a sacrifice could be vital for the team’s Collective success and to avoid Financial issues that have plagued the recent past while negotiations are still in the early stages it’s evident that marner’s future with the Leafs is at stake Maple Leaf’s fans may need to prepare for the possibility of significant changes but they can also trust in the players’s commitment to the city and the franchise to find a compromise the Maple Leaf’s decision to implement an internal salary cap reflects a broader shift in their team building philosophy after years of prioritizing top-end Talent with Hefty contracts the organization appears determined to strike a balance between Superstar cont tracks and depth throughout the roster this strategy aims to avoid the pitfalls of past Seasons where a lack of financial flexibility often left the team vulnerable in critical playoff moments for Mitch Marner this shift creates a unique Challenge on one hand his value to the Leafs is undeniable a consistent top scorer and Elite playmaker Marner has been instrumental in driving the team’s offense on the other hand his ability to command a salary that rivals or exceeds Austin Matthews could put the Leafs in a difficult position especially with a potential need to strengthen other areas of the roster as the 2023 to 24 season progresses the Leafs must weigh the potential consequences of sticking to their cap philosophy losing a homegrown Talent like Marner would undoubtedly sting for fans and the organization alike however allowing one player to dictate financial terms beyond the team structure could hinder long-term success and force painful sacrifices elsewhere adding to the complexity is the looming free agency of William neander if the Leafs are to stick to their internal salary app they may also face challenges in retaining neander who could command a significant raise balancing contracts for both Marner and nander within the new framework could prove to be the ultimate test for Toronto’s management team another Factor at play is the team’s ultimate goal winning the Stanley Cup while star players like Marner and Matthews are crucial history has shown that depth and balanced rosters often Prevail in the postseason if the Leafs fail to manage their finances effectively they risk falling short of building a championship caliber team even with with Elite Talent for Marner the decision to stay with the Leafs might come down to more than just dollars his connection to the city the fans and his teammates could be deciding factors if he prioritizes Legacy and loyalty over maximizing earnings there’s a strong possibility that he’ll work with a team to find a deal that benefits both parties negotiations will also test Darren Ferris known for his Hardline tactics in securing lucrative deals for his clients while pushing for top dollar is expected Ferris may need to weigh the risks of Al ien ating the Leaf’s management and fan base a prolonged stalemate could damage marner’s relationship with the team and its supporters the Leaf’s management led by general manager Brad trving faces a pivotal moment tring’s reputation as a negotiator and team Builder will be on full display as he navigates this high-stake scenario striking the right balance could solidify his tenure in Toronto while a misstep might set the team back for years for Maple Leaf’s fans the coming months will be filled with anticipation and uncertainty Marner future along with the team’s ability to stay competitive under Financial constraints will likely dominate conversations as the season unfolds supporters can only hope that the team’s new approach leads to Greater playoff success and ultimately The elusive championship in the end the outcome of these negotiations could redefine the Maple Leaf’s identity for years to come whether it results in retaining Marner or reshaping the roster the team’s commitment to an internal salary cap signals a clear focus on long-term sustainability fans will be watching closely hoping for a resolution that keeps the team’s core intact and their Championship dreams alive as the negotiations with Mitch Marner progress another layer of complexity is added by the external competition in the NHL Market teams with more cap space and fewer restrictions could easily present lucrative offers to Marner if he reaches free agency the Leafs are not only negotiating with Marner but also indirectly competing with other franchises willing to outbid them for his Services one example of this is Miko Ronin whose potential $4 million value on the open market highlights the growing demand for elite Wingers if Ronin secures such a deal it could set a precedent that marner’s camp would use as leverage the Leafs however must remain disciplined as breaking their internal salary cap for Marner could lead to similar demands from other key players down the line the looming Spectre of free agency means the Leafs have a limited window to strike a deal if negotiations drag on into the offseason The Leverage shifts heavily in favor of Marner and his agent Darren Ferris known for his strategic patience could use this to push for maximum value putting even greater pressure on the Leaf’s management to make a decision this scenario also places significant pressure on head coach Sheldon Keefe managing a team amid ongoing contract uncertainty can disrupt chemistry and focus Keefe will need to ensure that the team remains United and focused on their performance even as the media and fans speculate about marner’s future meanwhile the Leaf’s Core Group including Austin Matthews Morgan reallyy and John tarez will likely play a role in influencing Mar’s decision the camaraderie among the players and their Collective drive for a championship could persuade Marner to accept a deal that aligns with the team’s Financial structure on the flip side the Leafs could explore contingency plans if a deal with Marner doesn’t materialize trading Marner would be a bold move but it could bring significant assets in return potentially bolstering the team in areas like defense or secondary scoring this option while unpopular with fans might be necessary to maintain roster balance the timing of these decisions is all also Critical with the trade deadline months away the Leafs must assess whether keeping Marner without an extension risks losing him for nothing in free agency a preemptive trade could avoid the scenario but it would also signal a significant shift in the team’s short-term goals fan sentiment will undoubtedly influence the team’s approach Marner is not just an exceptional player he’s a fan favorite and a symbol of homegrown Talent succeeding in Toronto losing him could lead to backlash especially if the team struggles in the aftermath of his departure the broader NHL landscape also plays a role as other teams navigate their own salary cap challenges the Leafs can learn from their successes and failures organizations like the Tampa Bay Lightning and Vegas golden knights have shown the value of balancing star power with depth offering a potential blueprint for Toronto’s future
