tough one for the Lakers is they drop back-to-back game games guys at home after starting the season 7-0 at crypto.com Arena not pointing to just one thing one possession rather the third quarter is where we’re going to start with this one big game just atrocious a nightmare for the Lakers after leading at the half by six not only did they give up 37 in the third alone but offensively it was their second lowest scoring quarter of the Season you look at the numbers right here just 15 points there in the third quarter 37 points to only 15 they to get offensive rebounds extra points executions easy buckets and then the Lakers just went back to like two years ago their offense seemed to disappear the motion they got stagnant uh the shot clock running down and I don’t know it just seemed that they got hit in the jaw and just could never recover I mean Denver is a good team they’re not going to beat themselves and I just don’t think the Lakers met that effort or that competition that competing in the third quarter like they just laid down and it was it was weird for a team who have been playing you know pretty good and then to just just roll over like they did in the third I don’t know how else to explain it for me it just looked like one team with confidence one team without confidence and you Denver from all the years of beating the Lakers and the Lakers like oh you know we getting ready to lose and this is without know Jamal Murray Jamal Murray went out with an eye injury and yish ran the show and he made made everyone around them better and it’s like when you watch the Lakers and you you know you see the guard start playing well it’s almost like ad80 says okay you play well no ad we still need you to dominate and I only seen like one time where ad went to the hole to try to force the issue and didn’t get a call and he didn’t do it again it’s like he was afraid to go to the hole and we need ad to be more aggressive I know he still took what 16 Shots tonight we need you need to average 20 shots a game and I think that was one of the things that that kind of slowed the momentum of the Lakers because how how ad goes is how the Lakers goes I actually was going to go to Denver next but I want to touch on that point because it it was kind of an uncharacteristic night if you will for Anthony Davis he took 19 shots but just six of 19 and for a guy that we have from day one and he has shown up and he’s been there and he’s been a guy that has put this team on his shoulders he’s the second leading scorer in the NBA and you see it night in and night out didn’t seem to have any fight like any aggressiveness he went through the hole a couple times I don’t think he was as strong as I’ve seen him go and he you know he settled for a lot of jumpers tonight and it didn’t seem like he met jokic’s Force you got to meet force with force and so I’m not sure what it was I don’t I you know Denver played last night I would have been I would have been ready to go if I if I know they played last night I would have been very aggressive but I I just don’t know what happened to the intensity as as a whole uh but it does run through ad and when you know he’s not aggressiveness I mean 14 points is that’s not that’s not that’s not who ad is obviously we had talked about what we saw from him in the postgame the other night we talked about could that be a motivating factor he obviously had the shots 19 of them but there were a couple times just according to the eye test and it’s not an excuse but where he missed a couple bunnies and he he hung his head he I was going to say that you know that’s that’s unusual for ad but I I I I this is the one thing that that upsets me with ad and I love ad and and I love him in death I can tell when he’s not aggressive tonight he went to the Finesse game you go back I guarantee you look at seven of his shots everything was going away from the baskets and when he goes to the free throw line he’s going towards the basket and for some reason in his mind yices be he think yic is going to block a shot maybe I don’t know but he had a couple of shots where he got foued but he’s going away from the baskets and the refs are not going to give you that because yic is known for being a person who causes a lot of contact you got to know your personnel and for me ad8 go towards the basket that’s who you are that’s how that’s how you’ve been averaging 31 points a game his body yeah you getting 10 free throws a game to add to those 20 other points so I don’t know what coach is over on that sideline when you see this that’s the first thing I used to tell Shaq go towards the basket tell Tim Duncan go towards the basket they not giving the car you you got to go towards you got to make them see the contact and that’s one of that’s one of the things when you look down that bench JJ R got too many damn guards as coaches on his team he need a big man that knows bigs on his coaching staff when they see that they say yo ad go towards the basket so you can get to the free throw line and I agree with you you’ve always been in his corner you talked about it top of the MVP conversation and further tonight explaining how valuable he is when he has nights like this and how tough it is for the Lakers but also for that guy right there n yic and just how great he has been talked about the numbers that Denver has had the Lakers number now 14 and three over the last three seasons including the postseason as well as the regular season after winning five straight they had lost three of their last four coming into tonight big game two of them without Nicole yic two of those losses were without Nicole yic but three-time MVP he finds ways to lead this squad I think the turnovers just another sign of a championship team that finds ways to make you pay he’s physical uh you know and he’s a he’s an MVP he’s a champion and he’s consistent with the numbers are better than ever this year so if you don’t meet force with Force If he if he can tell that you’re not ready to play he’s going to eat your Al and that’s what he did tonight he was just exceptional if you play hard and play physical he still going to get his but if you’re not ready to meet him where he wants to play he’s he’s he he’ll destroy you and that’s that’s without Pope is gone Aaron Gordon not playing not out yep uh Murray went out for a little bit and they still had other guys it’s the system and when they’re running it well if you’re not meeting that force with Force they just you know they just kind of had their way with the Lakers yeah all five starters for Denver and double figures but to your point Jamal Murray just 14 on five of 12 shooting but you still got a guy named Michael Porter Jr he had 24 behind y just 34 13 and 8 I want to ask you a quick question I don’t know if the 31 points off of the 15 turnovers is a season high but it seems up there was it something that Denver defensively was doing or just something got away from offensively we talked about how great they’ve been in the pregame show you know and the weird part of it is nothing the Denver did it was just a lot of bad passage it was no Focus it’s almost like they I want to say this again like they punch drunk from Orlando they still punch drunk and they got the cloud and they they just didn’t play well in that quarter and they had to find a way to start you know going like playing down here if you look at the Denver Nuggets they out scored Us in the paint and they went down here they attacked the basket that’s the sign of a veteran team a championship quality team knowing we offer back to back our legs aren’t going to be fresh for the jumpers even though they made a lot of jumpers that’s what Michael Porter Jr does but go downhill get into the paint try to get easy bucket that way we get oursel going that’s mentioned to answer your question LeBron had six of the 15 turnovers you know that’s something that will drive him crazy he going to go crazy off that one the 15 turnovers for La Denver themselves 18 turnovers but just for 18 points it was a season low for La 102 points on the season let’s hear from JJ reic he’s speaking with Mike trell in the media JJ what do you think happened in the third quarter schematically um certainly we’ll have to review some stuff clearly the spirit to compete just wasn’t there do you do you have any idea why or is that how do you and how do you address that if so we’ll solve it like we we solve other problems but obviously we’ll we’ll do that internally it was a atypical ad night based on what we’ve seen from him this season did you have any explanation for um you know his kind of production tonight yeah you know it felt like he missed some of those touch shots um missed some shots closer in you know there were a couple even in the first half when I thought we played really well for the most part outside of some transition stuff just you know ball just kind of spun around the rim and and went out um you know but I I thought in terms of the offensive process for him I I I thought overall it was fine JJ so much of this is is you know one night type stuff but when a team like Denver has had so much cumulative success um and they start to go on a run early in the thir third does that does that zap more energy out of a team and in your experience no I I I it’s a good question I I don’t think whatever well I have a pretty clear idea of what happened in Third but whatever it was um I was not because we were haunted by the ghosts of the past or something like that it was um it was kind of obvious to me what what happened there just not the right Spirit JJ up second consecutive game you got were outrebounded by double digits um I guess is that I’m sure you have to look at the film to kind of decipher that but how much of that’s competing versus the schematic part well we missed a lot of shots and they didn’t I I think for us to hold them to eight offensive rebounds a little bit you know I think three three at least three of those were were sort of late there in the in the fourth when we still had um our starters in but um that was a big point of emphasis um you know joic played 36 minutes and he got two offensive rebounds he was a averaging close to five so um you know that part of it we would lik to get more offensive rebounds on an off shooting light like we had but potentially just not a lot of opportunities there to rebound because they shot 61% they were over um two points scored per turnover um almost the entire game game um just how punitive did it feel watching it every time you guys would make a mistake yeah um those those put us in some tough spots and it wasn’t just there in the third um our half court defense and outside of a couple just like minor things um our half court defense and our our attention to detail on game plan stuff was really good in the first half um it was a transition and some of the turnovers that hurt us there um you live ball turnovers are they’re going to kill you no matter what we look we’ve been I think coming into theight we were third in turnover percentage uh in the NBA so we we’ve done a good job of taking care of the basketball uh to ensure that the kind of things that you guys have been working on in the messaging um kind of R um how do you say to make sure that you don’t continue some of the mistakes that you guys have been making in terms of transition defense in terms of the free throws in terms of the turn R vers Laden games and the third quarter streak how do you what’s your message to the team and how do you ensure that that kind of gets corrected as you you mentioned before yeah someone coaching is playing whack-a-mole you know um you you you have to address weaknesses um we certainly did some of that stuff yesterday in film and and on the court and felt pretty good about our overall just process and game plan um coming into tonight and um you know all of us just we didn’t execute it but you know in terms of the defensive stuff and I told the I told the group this yesterday like we can point to whatever we want to point to um me and my staff will take some ownership on that as well like it’s not just you know players not executing the game plan it’s you know it’s all of us like we’re we’re we’re all on the same team we all want the same outcome we all want to be a good defensive team so we we’ve got to figure out that together you cited the overall team turnover statistics of not being that alarming but LeBron’s CR decided his own turnovers over the last couple weeks he had I think six tonight have you seen any causation as to what is is occurring either within his role in the offense or the other players role in the offense that that’s leading to his turnovers kind of growing over the last week or so um I think with tonight they’re they’re a team that has a lot of Defenders with active hands and they were shocking him or sort of you know the quick Blitz and some of his pick and rolles um but they’re they’re they’re a handsy team and and you know they get they get deflections um I think some of that tonight and you know some sometimes uh High usage players can kind of go through stretches where um they do have high turnover games and you have to live with that thanks coach ruy uh what did you see in that third quarter that really I guess gave the advantage to Denver um I think we went um we just kind of relaxed I know we had a I think uh 10 points how many how many how many lead we have like a 10 points 12 points half time yeah four six but I think we are in a good Rhythm and then we kind of relaxed for some reason and the third quarter yeah like they just uh they knew and they just they just play harder you know and we just couldn’t we didn’t fight back and yeah that was game yeah um what impact do you think Russell Westbrook had in uh their run in the third and AD thought maybe the Nuggets were you know kind of amping him up considering the history with the Lakers I think uh yeah he bring the energy to the team you know um just either offense defense stealing the ball diving the for you know scoring the ball whatever that is you know he he bring the energy and he of course um he feels some type of way you know against always against against us so uh he gonna play so hard and he trying to be good so um but yeah he he he for sure he changed the game he brought the energy for the team I know they were they were playing back to back um last night they play and they were tired but yeah they they just play harder than us yeah any else in English thanks yeah good a season low 14 points for Anthony Davis in the loss he’s speaking in the locker room with br uh ad uh good first half that third quarter of the game kind of got away from you guys what did you see out there um defensively we bad uh third quarter um mother making shots we scor 15 points and the third that was a that was a game right there um you know we were giv a lot of back doors that we wasn’t giving up in the first half um you know maybe we going back to a you know a Zone set defense and we just couldn’t score the basketball a lot of points off turnovers for for Denver uh what what happened with that tonight turn the ball over um you know they shot 61% from the field uh it’s hard to you know set your defense you know when we turn the ball over think we had 17 or 15 one of them so um do a better job taking care of the ball but uh especially in the third quarter it was was just bad overall what do you make your personal night thought like the process of your offense you for you with shots that you’re comfortable with had had some that usually make just Rim out what’ you make of it yeah um just miss shots I mean I think all Great Looks you know Miss or make lead uh I make more than I miss for sure um you know you always wish you know you can make every shot um confident in every shot I took shots that I normally make um all of us to be honest um shots that we all normally make we just missed um you know but uh know I liked every shot that I took tonight just didn’t go in did you mentioned like I think he used the phrase Spirit to compete was just not there he thought in the third quarter did did you feel that on the court did you feel that kind of evaporate from you guys as they sort of just kind of took off it was just the frustration part I mean we were giving up so many back doors to start the Third open threes you know our defense of Michael Porter coming off uh we were getting screen you know he was you know making shots um you know when you play so well in the first half and then you come out uh like we did in that in that third quarter um you know giving up back doors and threes wide open you know definitely deflating um it’s not our defense and um being to comb back that you go down and you can’t make a shot so um you know when it rains it pours you know we just got to be better on both ends of the floor is any of that you think cumulative for the fact that you know these guys have kind of had your number for the last couple seasons and when it feels like you have a good first half and then all of a sudden it all goes wrong like that does that weigh on you guys do you think did you feel like kind of a weight of the past because of this team mhm no um I mean I personally don’t um I’m not sure about anyone else I don’t think it does but uh you know I think we just got to be better on both ends of the floor um you know we had multiple games this season where we played well in the first half and the second half we um we don’t but we still found ways to win now guys still made shots you know we didn’t you know 15 points in the third quarter is not going to cut it it’s anybody um and then our you know finish players came in at the end and made shots but we only had I think 15 or 17 you know in the fourth as well so um we did a terrible job tonight you know offensive execution and um you know making shots and uh I think us not making shots kind of had us um this uh unorganized on the defensive ENT as well what impact do you think Westbrook gave them tonight what impact yeah um I mean just for their team you know he brings that energy you know in know rust play he plays hard um and you know make some some shots uh some steals you know you play how Russ plays you know um I’m pretty sure you know them guys know the history with us you know and uh probably amp them up a little bit more but you know when he comes in the game he’s very disruptive and uh brings that juice for him you know especially when he’s you know making plays um so I think that kind of you know helped him a lot tonight this was the last question straight game you guys were outrebounded by double digits on the glass what have you seen from the I guess the rebounding the last couple of games um you know they guys going to crash that’s a scam report on us you know run you know when we miss run a transition and uh offensive rebound crash the glass so um we got to do a better job of putting bodies on bodies boxing out um just that simple thank you than you again an uncharacteristic shooting night for Anthony Davis 14.6 of 19 but I liked where he said I’m going to make more than I will miss didn’t seem to be too let down by night like tonight you got him in the NBA you going to have nights um you know it’s disappointing and you have to look closely at why it happened uh after you just lost a game to uh Florida he’s the guy that we’re running it through everything and he’s got to make sure that it’s it’s run through him with with some force and so yeah making shots is something making and missing shots is part of the game but I just didn’t feel like like yic was right there and it didn’t seem like he was not there when we needed it when he makes the observation too Rob of letting Our Miss shots kind of affect our defense and then you hear JJ say the spirit to compete you wonder if it all plays A Part together it always because you know I think 99 % of the league dictates how they play defense on the from from the offensive end you know if you’re not rolling offense you get you get inside your head and then you kind of like don’t play on the other end and that’s uncommon for ad I know I’m not saying ad didn’t play defense that but I’m just thinking it got into his head where he missed some bunnies the ones he’s been making all year Reon average in 3 and he started thinking about it the one thing I learned when the first moment I got into this league is the don’t think you’ve been playing this game for so long you just go out and play it it’s going to happen organically it’s going to happen naturally so you just trust your instincts and trust your skill set I think ad started thinking about it way too much he started going back to the old habits where he was averaging in like 14 points game where he was not touching the ball in the fourth quarter so I I I know he’s going to go back he’s a smart player look at film adjust and be better next game speaking of film where do you think that dark place is JJ goes tonight he calls watching film therapy that dark place was his basement from what from whatever he was chewing on during his press conference he’s already mad about something man he going to be upset 19 and six for Austin in defeat he’s with BRZ in the locker room Austin the uh third quarter obviously was where the game got away from you guys what did you see out there tonight uh I think we just played one of the worst quarters you could possibly play uh energy was down from um the first possession in the third quarter and uh you know they took advantage um and ran away with the game there what’s the mindset of the team you had the tough loss the other night came down to free throws in the fourth quarter and then you have the uh The Not So Close loss tonight yeah I mean what already 10 and six uh still in a good spot uh good spirits um you know you’re going to unfortunately have games like this games like you know last game there’s a lot of 82 games is a lot of games and uh like I said unfortunately you’re going to have some like this in the last game you just got to um you know bounce back and and and go compete as hard as you can the next game you mentioned a lack of energy in the third quarter JJ mentioned that the spirit to compete just wasn’t there did you feel the same way what were you seeing out there I guess that lets it that yeah I mean I think that’s kind of just what I said and I’m sure JJ said as well um just wasn’t good enough um and that should never be you know the problem if we you know compete and lose off of not making shots or um you know the other things other than you know not playing hard then you can live with those results tonight you just in the third quarter didn’t play hard what did you like about what you guys are able to do in the first half um to put yourself in position I guess to kind of set the stage for the the floor Ball but like what did you like about what you guys did early that you weren’t able to replicate I thought there was a lot of energy on the ball uh ball was moving we were getting good shots uh there was multiple times where we had you know second side actions where we drove their close outs and you know got a you know shooter on the uh you know opposite side or ad in the post uh and then defensively I thought we were physical um and we you know was executing our stuff uh but then like you said the third quarter was a downfall and uh unfortunately there was a downfall for us Austin uh anytime you guys play these guys the history is brought up the playoff series now they’ve won 13 to 14 um when they go on that run in the third quarter is that does any of that stuff kind of pop up mentally at all or is that completely separate no I mean last year is last year the year before so long ago and I can barely remember what I did yesterday so um yeah I mean tonight may be of us thanks thank you thank you we talked about it at the start of the show everyone’s talking about it when it comes to these two teams you just heard yovon say 13 of the last 14 have gone to Denver but Austin’s comments there ad said it Rob JJ said it we’re not chasing any ghosts last year was last year they just flat out beat us tonight is it a is it a mental thing right now as players well there’s always been throughout the history of the league where certain teams dominate teams no matter what the record are how it is it turns out to be matchups and there’s something about this nugget teams which caused them to dominate the Lakers and you can sit down you try to analyze okay this guy’s going to you know cancel out this guy this guy’s going to cancel out this guy where is The X Factor and I think tonight The X Factor was everybody so is this one more special because of the thing or just because of all the stuff you guys heartbreak last night travel situation one of the biggest opponents who’s one of the hottest teams in the West I mean how did you do it well you know it’s um as I told Vic right after the game um as a coach you know we live dayto Day game to game quarter by quarter and that was my first reaction was I just so proud of our guys for gutting out a win like we did tonight uh that third quarter is one of our best quarters of the year uh so we responded coming out of the break our defense was outstanding we got out and ran and we started playing Denver Nugget basketball so that that’s number one is uh you know record and accolades that’s all cool but we have a job to do and that’s to win games and so to go on the road the second night of a back to back after a come from behind tough loss last night um you know I’m really pleased with that and then as you reflect obviously and you think about you know okay the 433 and what does that mean to me what it means Scott is that you know I’ve been really fortunate to to work for the crony family you know standing Josh and just how wonderful they’ve been to me and my family and the best way I can put it is like when somebody believes in you that that that’s powerful and they have continued to believe in me every step of the way and I don’t take that lightly um obviously this league as a coach you need players and I’ve been blessed to have um a lot of players come through that door in 10 years and so I say thank you to all them and obviously I mean when you get a chance to coach a legendary player like Nicole yic who makes my job easier every day and then you have guys like uh da and all my coaching staff Ryan Ryan Bowen’s been with me every step of the way he just joked that he should have a banner up there that says most assisting coach wins because he’s been with me for 10 years uh so I I’ve developed you know we’re like family all these coaches um and obviously you have you know I mean Tim connley he saw something in me he believed in me and he and he brought me in front of Josh gry and said this is our guy and without that endorsement from Tim and urist you know I’m not the the head coach in Denver that simply stated so you know I have to give credit where credit is due and most importantly my family you know uh my wife joclyn my two daughters Caitlyn and Bridget uh life of a coach is not easy you’re gone it’s a crazy schedule the demands uh and my mother obviously uh my number one supporter uh so I’m really lucky to have a great group of people behind me uh that love me and support me every single day from the hallway it sounded like it’s a pretty fun scene in there you guys celebrate how did they honor you what did that mean to you uh well yes I walked in and um you know the the players they DED me with water and uh cooler and you know that’s uh kind of speaks to how connected the group is and when anybody in our team has success we all share in that and we all celebrate it together because we are a family so that was really cool experience and Moment Like life’s about moments as my father would always talk about and that was a great moment to celebrate with with guys with our team uh and I appreciate that and we can celebrate because more importantly we got to win over team as SC that’s playing well and we’re trying to find our way um so yeah extremely ecstatically my only regret is that I wish my father was here for it but I do know that he’s looking down with a big smile on his face coach where where would you rank this win as a a road win or big win this season Scott and I were talking about that is it the best road win we thought it was uh given the circumstances but win Road win what do you think well as you guys know Road wins are always tough to come by and and you go back earlier in the season I mean Toronto was a hell of a win we’re down 13 points with four minutes to go and you force overtime and you win then we do the same thing in Brooklyn uh the our last game in Memphis where we got a win but tonight uh you know knowing that the story and history between the two franchises uh the fact that they’ve been playing very well and for us were on a backto back and so everything is kind of you know piled against you and that’s where resolve comes in that’s where mental toughness comes in and uh our guys in that second half were just uh it was just so much fun to watch us how we guarded how we ran how we executed and it was everybody I it wasn’t just one player everybody contributed so uh yes this was a hell of a roadwi for us and now we got a chance to to go home and and and get ready to protect our home court which we have to do a better job of Michael you said that third quarter may have been the best basketball you’ve seen this group play this year and it was a balanced attack but Russ in a building he knows so well on Nets he knows so well what did you see from him particularly in the third well yeah obviously Jamal gets U you know the elbow Pok in the eye whatever it was and so he’s he leaves the bench and uh we put Russ in and we didn’t miss a beat you know that’s one thing Russ and Nia have great ENC Court chemistry Michael Porter you know 24 4 and 11 tonight four assists I think Michael’s playing at a really high level for us uh you know Russ is 14 and 11 Off the Bench with seven boards um but to be honest Malik it all started with our defense the message at halftime was right now our transition defense is just terrific and they’re just running the ball down that throat makes misses turnovers we take that away we force him to play the half court that’s to to our favor and we were able to do that and um and slow them down they only had two transition points in that third quarter and that ignited us did you want to leave Russ and Nicole in for those triple doubles um you know what’s funny I I have no idea like like what the numbers are when I make Subs I and I hate the idea of leaving guys in because you never know what’s going to happen God forbid somebody gets hurt when you’re up by 20 something points um Russ’s got 200 Nicole is about to pass magic I believe to meet third on the alltime list they’ll get they’ll get theirs but I had no idea that was you know they were as close as they were but there’s also the Integrity of the game and the basketball gods that are always looking down on us one more I got a stupid question no such thing okay 2043 after the news of this past week you think you’ll be around to coach a young 19-year-old that might be eligible to play in the NBA at that time yeah why not why not you know uh I think about Kos papovich all the time and I think about him a lot lately because everything he’s going through uh and and the Deep regard I have for him and everything he’s done for me uh but then I think about his career Arc and and what he’s done in San Antonio around Timmy Tony Manu and those great teams that won five championships and to see now like the them go through the evolution of a franchise you know you work your way up you’re at the top you go down and then you start to rise again um I’ll be I’ll be here as long as they have me and so hopefully that’s uh that’s for a long time thank you coach thanks everybody appreciate it congratulations all our players
