defended well yeah the defensive part of the game is in order but you go on the road you come back with three out of four points I think that’s a good road trip regardless of the fact that you lose 76 76 you you score six goals on the road you got to win there’s no doubt about that but they didn’t but they did get a point so three out of four you come back now home you got a team that’s the best defensive team in in the league right David yeah so you know you’ve got to play a good defensive game and you’ve got to do your thing to get some good shots on that what have you and we’ll see what happens tonight that’s all I can say right now I think people are curious myself included to see if that game in Columbus was a one-off hope so and just a stinker yeah or did they let some bad habits creep back into their game that they corrected when they had that weekl long layoff and we’re going to see tonight because not only is Dallas a really good defensive team which the stars are right they have offensive capabilities they aren’t just a team that shuts it down and relies on you know one or two goals a game they could score too well you you know that’s the one thing that’s different in this game now than it was uh before even a decade ago you get a three nothing lead you very seldom lost the game yeah but it’s a different way the game played so badly defensively though Phil I mean honestly I know I was L I think that both John Cooper and the players said you know Columbus deserved to win so that tells you something W they gave him 92 shots attempts I mean 92 that’s just now there was overtime in there but only one of those shot attempts for Columbus came at overtime so they had 91 through 60 minutes and they had a fairly quiet first four to five minutes Columbus cuz the lightning jumped out to an early lead so that just tells you how off the lightning were in that game well they were off but they got a point they got a point and uh that then they maybe it’s a little bit of a thing saying okay we had a bad game but we still got a point out of it guys so let’s see how we can come out and that’s what you’re talking about for tonight’s game now you need to bounce back you need to bounce back and see what happens and now it’s uh Paul out yes Nikki Paul is going to be out for a while don’t know how how long but I think that creates a little bit of more of a hole because when point was out you know it’s just different so we’ll see whether these guys can uh fill in the The Gap with Paul well in the two home games the lightning one before the road trip coming out of that bye they went with an 11 forward seven defensive formation and Parker Braden point was injured point is now back but Paul is out lighting went with 12- six in the two Road games but they’re going back to 11- seven Tonight Darren radish who didn’t play a Columbus comes back in cam ainson who did play and scored against his former team Columbus Blue Jackets is out and the lightning are using the unit of Celli and Hegel as the one line with the open forward spot kov has played pretty regularly with those two guys I would expect that we’ll see him there at points but maybe gonal is there maybe Mitchell chaffy there right maybe they put point there and who knows move him or Celli to right wing well that’s the advantage of going 11 and seven I you know you can use your and I don’t mean this derogatory tny buddy you can use your better players more and play them more so uh that’s I think that’s a great thing as a next player I would have loved it well when you play there only three lines anyway right you don’t have to wait as long never it was beautiful this is the start of a three- game home stand for the LI they have good teams coming in too I say boy Colorado on Monday Colorado has had a weird start the year cuz they’ve been hot they’ve been cold they were cold and they were hot and they were cold again they’ve had a lot of injuries but their top guys are healthy and that makes them very dangerous and then Washington comes in on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving interesting to see how the capital’s handle of edin’s absence he’s going to be out said about six weeks yeah leg injury up at a fractured ankle or something or fibia right in the leg in the leg so not like a stamp goes broken leg though mean no not at all about a month and a half he’s going to be out they expect and but he’ll be back and that’ be good for him I mean he was playing pretty 15 goals 15 goals he had n was he leading the league at the time yeah and he I I mean I haven’t checked he may still be leading the league honestly I’m not sure if somebody’s caught him he was also a plus 15 which felt like he was only scoring the power play I mean he was scoring the power play he was also scoring five on five Washington’s a good team this year but having said that in the first game without him I think it was the first game without him they got beaten at home by Colorado the other night so we’ll see how they look on Wednesday but my point is that this is a a three-game home stand with lightning have been good they’ve been good at home but they have high quality opposition them is they’ve got nothing on the power play one shot in each power play but they haven’t had any any real shots on goal I mean not even they move it around and move it around and move it around but they’re looking for Co every once in a while you got to shoot the puck yeah can’t score if you don’t shoot and they’re looking for Co too much yeah right like he’s covered that was pretty good defensive team they they know where the puck is going and a couple times they tried to force plays over there and look this home power play continues to be a storyline and not for good reasons like we’ve just been so used to it dominating games and being the difference in games and here you are in a 22 game your power play is over for three and then really hasn’t built you any momentum right I mean they’ve they’ve got to figure this out at some point I mean we’re almost a Thanksgiving now and um you know you’re not getting any consistent opportunities from your power play and you know if they get another one in the third we’ll see what happens but you got to kill off this 103 here to start uh for Dallas and you know I mean the good news is is there once again it’s a tie game going a hooking B I mean you like to see those type of effort plays uh especially coming off the other night against Columbus you know I know I talked to Mitchell chaffy about that after the first intermission and it it’s it’s good to see those moments come back to Tampa Bay so quickly after it just completely evaporated the other night and this might be one of those games where gon Solas maybe great 2-2 against one of the better teams heading into the third you want to come away with points here now you’ve got an opportunity yeah and uh I think for Tampa Bay right now any standings point is good I mean listen John Cooper Nikita cucha Hedman vassie go down the entire roster they want to win every single night but this early in the year there’s no such thing as a bad standings point you know they’re competitive guys they hate losing in general but this is the time of year where these overtime losses these these shootouts if you have to lose if you can get it to that extra period these are the points that at the end of the year when those standings are are coming down to the final weeks they make a difference they really do so you want to win every game but they have to grind at least a point out of this game because again against the Dallas Stars team that’s been so good defensively this could be a game you point back to and say hey we didn’t like giving up those two in the first but look what we did after that right so this could be kind of a game they can keep going back to if they play the way that they showed they can maybe a little bit more of a Shooter’s test against an excellent opponent and the Stars picked up their level in the second I know it was a scoreless second but they had some moments where the lightning were put in tough spots based on how did we watch the guy go right to COV Y tonight he didn’t even care about whether the guy the guy was going to shoot it he went right to kovs to stop the pass when the lightning went three and0 and allowed a total of three goals one of the things that we heard from John Cooper and the players this was part of it wasn’t all of it we weren’t giving the other team freebies we weren’t fueling the other team’s attack the stars were already bringing a lot of pressure in the first 5 six minutes of the third period lighting at very little offensive zone time they finally got an offensive zone shift and what did they do they fueled the other team’s attack and a three on two it’s in their net I agree and it’s not game over but game changed for sure game changed game changed right there there’s no doubt about it but hey look I thought the first period lightning were terrific yeah they probably deserve better than 22 but they did you’re still looking at a tie game going into the third defensive team in the NHL the lightning have actually gotten some looks against them and they created some looks and I think that was the story certainly in the first period into the early part of the second period but the second half of this game was a different story and you saw why the Dallas Stars are the best defensive team in the NHL statistically another game where they hold the other team to two or less they locked it they were just so good positionally and they avoided turnovers in the second half of the game and when the lightning did get an opportunity AER made some good saves did yes and he’s a pretty darn good goal tender and the combin com ination of those two things right there you see why they are the best defensive team in the league yeah they really did a good job very impressed too you know like Brendan Smith’s been all over the place yeah Dumba has he was forced into duty CU Neil lanquist is injured he’s normally their sixth defense played a very good made sure solid dumo was solid they made sure that they got the puck out of their Zone made passes Jamie Ben was skating better than I’ve seen him skate for a long time and that that team’s a good te they a good team that Central Division the top three teams and I don’t know where Colorado is going to end up they’ve had a lot of injuries I think that they’ve got some problems in terms of keeping the puck out of their own net but they can certainly score but outside of Colorado you see Winnipeg Minnesota and Dallas that is the strongest top of a division in the NHL I agree play five of the six games against those teams already this year well that’s good yeah that’s good another game in Dallas it won’t be until March that’s good but you know you got to play these games but the way the lightning played the first period was very very good except I still didn’t think they shot enough and how do they scor their two goals by shooting the puck and getting rebounds yeah if that doesn’t tell you something duh you know right anyway well let’s get your three stars yeah I gave my first start at hottinger only because when it was 22 he made a couple of big saves real big saves so we’ll give honer my first start Matt duain got a goal and assist he looked so much better than I’ve seen him and a long long time so I’m going to give him my second star but Anthony Celli I got to give a start too because I thought not only did he get the two goals he worked hard yeah and he played hard and he does all the time anyway so Anthony Celli is my third star well the lightning will get ready for Colorado the opponent on Monday I see Jonathan drwan is back healthy I mean they’ve had a lot of injuries but drwan who missed the first meeting between the teams had two his first two goals of the Year tonight oh really for Colorado they won 74 in Sunrise yeah I think there may have been an empty Netter yeah but they were down two to one after one and they were up 53 after two so they can score they can score they can score McKinnon Ma ranton and those guys those lightning will be put to the test defensively once again but they did beat Colorado in the first meeting in Denver earlier this here’s Greg lelli this was a 22 game heading into the third period Dallas able to get a couple of goals in the third they down Tampa Bay 4 to2 Anthony Celli your lone goal scorer tonight for Tampa Bay his seventh and eighth goals of the year his eighth goal in second of the game gave the lightning a 2-1 lead in the first period at 8:34 from lber and Hegel but uh we’re going to get into it with Chief here during our postgame show with lightning uh giving up uh some glorious scoring opportunities in Dallas really tightening things up defensively as uh we had talked about throughout the broadcast that’s what kind of they do and uh they showed especially from the the second period on uh Chief this was a a game though heading into the third you felt like okay you could get some points you know you know how good Dallas is you know how well they defend but you you put yourself in a position to to munch some and uh unfortunately it was Dallas who end up making some plays in the third well the first shot the lightning got in the third period came 12 minutes and 20 seconds into the period so you know that that was the one thing when we talked in the pregame we I thought you know we mentioned the fact that what could be a difference is is the is the Special Teams yeah because Dallas’s penalty kill is not strong and the Lightning’s power play was pretty good but but it was the reverse the penalty kill for Dallas was really good yes but the lightning only had one shot on each of the three power plays they had one you know they moved the puck well but you got to shoot the puck every once in a while you got to keep those that defensive four honest if they know you’re not going to shoot they’ll let you play around the outside all day long yeah you know and and so that you know I I thought that was kind of a bugaboo in a sense because you know the power play was starting to click for the lightning and they you know they’ve been very good on it but um it it was not a factor in this game and they and the penalty uh for Dallas was was a factor which hasn’t been a real strong part of their game which is unusual because they are a fairly good defensive team but um you know and yeah we our inability to shoot the puck it’s just that you we you’re we’re allowing that offensive team to get the blue line so easily we don’t challenge them in the neutral zone as much as we used to and when you’re giving up that blue line that much and that puck Carri for that much SP time you can get really hurt with it and you mentioned for sure on the the power play overpassing and and looking for cooch probably too much right well yeah I mean it was pretty obvious tonight that that’s all they talked about you know and and I think you know dumble might had something to say about it you know because he played here last year says hey it all goes through G you would take him away and then then see what happens and basically that’s basic what happened you know they just they were on them and and you know they were much more aggressive too on our points you know when in the the power play they were they’re out there so they had to make pretty good uh pinpoint passes but we all you know we we didn’t shoot I don’t think so many times from the middle of the ice again going to the sides and uh uh it was uh they they did a good job of Defending they did they really did but we didn’t take I don’t think we shot the puck enough to keep them honest that’s my what hurt us too I mean as we’ve said before it’s never a bad play to shoot the puck right get a rebound maybe a fluky bounce and you go from there yeah well you know I mean if they don’t if they know what you’re basically going to do 90% of the time it’s easy to defend because then you can play in fact there was one time in in that power play where hman had the uh right in the middle of the ice he was about 15 fet into from the the blue line and uh he he got the pass and uh orlock or the golender was already waai AER uh yeah auder or AER rather was already over to the right side or the left side of the net waiting for C shot right and that’s when P Victor still had the puck yeah so he knew what he was going to do so when you’re when you’re when you’re really being defended by uh people watch the tape all the time and they don’t do anything different and they they’re actually just playing for what you’re going to do and they’re knowing what you’re going to do before they know what you’re going to do yeah you know before you know what you’re going to do rather so I think it was one of those games where were they uh they just uh they just defended you know a lot better and knew exactly what we were going to do every single time and there was there was no change in what we were doing there was nothing changed we just kept doing the same thing over and over and I think that led to a lot of why we couldn’t really get our offense uh untracked in the last 40 minutes perhaps a team like Colorado which is you know weird to say but they’re leaky defensively maybe the lightning can get their off on track but that game’s going to come down to defending too isn’t a chief every one of them is yeah you know I mean we talked about I think great when one uh postgame show or even even uh pregame show I think a week or two ago is that there’s not much different offensively from teams the top six and the bottom six but the biggest difference between those teams is the top six can play defense the bottom six does play doesn’t play defense they or at least they don’t know how yeah or whatever their or whatever their system is you know it’s not working for them so that’s the thing that’s really the big difference because you know there’s so many offensive players coming in the league now because of the way the game’s being played you know there’s no two-line pass you know it’s all go go go go all the time you know and uh if you don’t play defense then you’re going to struggle yeah for sure it’s a good point by you and lightning are going to have to D it up on Monday against Colorado team that’s got a lot of Fire are for sure Chief thank you for this we appreciate it and we’ll talk to you on Dave Michigan on the call yes Celli had both goals tonight for Tampa Bay unfortunately it wasn’t enough as Dallas comes away with a 4-2 win here at amily Arena Greg lelli with you Eric arson down in the locker room E I think anytime you’re tied with a team like Dallas going into the third period with an opportunity to get some points and you don’t that is disappointing isn’t it absolutely um you know and and we’ve seen this probably a few two times too many times this year when they have been tied uh heading into the into the third or tied late in the third period and and they’ve come away with nothing and you know those are just leaving points on the board and um and look Dallas very good team we talked about that pregame the roster that they have the way that they play they’re the best defensive team in the leag they’ve allowed two or fewer goals in 12 of 19 games if you’re not going to get that third goal on them there’s a good chance you’re not going to win the game lightning couldn’t do it Dallas did find it um you know a mistake ends up in the back of your net and it’s a it’s a tale that this team has told a few too many times this year I know a lot of people wanted to see if the Columbus game was more of a one-off heading into tonight’s game against Dallas much better effort no no doubt but did we see any anything that reoccurred in this game that we saw in Columbus well not necessarily from what we saw in Columbus but what we’ve seen them happen a few too many times this year and and specifically passing out of scoring opportunities or passing out of shot opportunities I mean that’s what led directly to the game-winning goal for Dallas you know Ryan McDon has an opportunity to put the puck on N he tries to go across um with the pass it gets disrupted and all of a sudden the lightning are caught with too too many players you know down by the hash marks the stars go down the other way so I mean that’s a habit that they have to get out of they have to get out of that habit of overpassing and looking for the next play rather than taking advantage of the one that they do have so you know like I I thought the the compete level was was better the puck B level was better um you know Anthony Celli is a perfect example especially on his second goal just fighting for position there in front of the net and battling for the puck and we saw a lot of Puck battles tonight that the liting were engaged in so uh I I would think that you know I we’ll see what John Cooper has to say but I think they were able to push past what happened in the game against Columbus and put forth an effort that could win you a game I’m not saying they should have won this game but they could have won this game and now a uh an intriguing match up on Monday isn’t it yeah and look Colorado just put up seven on uh Florida tonight so uh you know they’re going to come in here feeling good about their game they’re a little bit healthier than the Avalanche were when the lightning were there last month uh in Denver and again another challenge you know if if you’re not on top of your game defensively and if you’re going to turn pucks over uh against guys like kale Mar and Nathan McKinnon they’re going to race back up the other way they’re going to burn you with speed uh and they’re going to make you pay for your for your mistake so once again it’s it’s a similar sort of approach that you have have to limit those mistakes uh and capitalize on your chances and that just goes back to not turning the puck over and don’t overpass get pucks on net and give yourself an opportunity I mean look both of those goals that Tampa Bay scored tonight came off of rebounds right yeah Brandon Hegel put the puck on net on the first one Emil lillberg put the puck on that on the second one and Celli was there for the rebound they don’t have to be perfect shots they don’t have to be shots that you’re always looking to score they can be shots to put it on net and and good things can happen when you have guys around it so that has to be more of an approach they need moving forward you’ve got the last call tonight presented by Jack missing or what changed in that third period I mean yeah it was it was tight there and uh you know it was a matter who made the mistake and take advantage of it and and uh you know definitely a play I went back there probably should just put it towards the net and and uh play high percentage and instead of looking for one more pass and they made us pay and and uh carried it through the rest of the game so we knew it was going to come down to you know probably one or two plays against the team like this and and uh you know fortunately we were the ones that made the mistake and and that’s on uh me especially there on the third goal we’ve asked that question a lot about maybe a little too much older pass is that a hard habit to break I mean yeah we’ve can say we’ve learned our lesson enough times this year so um we got to start applying it and and uh realize that uh you know we’re leaving points out there because of uh our arrogance there so got to uh got to stop it right now and how hard is this Dallas come yeah no quitting I mean they uh they’ve been to two straight Conference Finals for a reason you know they don’t give you much like I said they don’t make a lot of mistakes and if they do they got a goalie there that uh is is pretty solid so um like I said we knew it was going to be one or two plays here there and and uh they made the plays and and uh we didn’t you don’t get the result want but do you like the the boun back maybe from it’s hard to take a moral uh victory at this point uh we like to uh take pride and closing it out there in those situations like you talked about 22 and the third that’s uh not the way I want to play did you feel like you just couldn’t get in a rhythm tonight uh like I said both both teams probably uh you know knew it was going to be uh hard to come by chances hard to come by and um like I said we uh we kind of shot shot ourselves in the foot there and and uh like I said give them credit they they have a lot of skill but they uh take advantage of your mistakes and if you’re going to keep making them uh it’s going to be tough to come back yeah and that’s what they did to a degree especially in the second and third periods as they
