we have lots to talk about in today’s NHL news day including some NHL trade rumors focusing on teams like Toronto Vancouver and Ottawa plus we have big news from the NHL waiver wire we have a new coaching change as well the St Louis Blues did not wait long to pounce on fre agent coach Jim Montgomery after being dismissed in Boston plus we have some other injury updates from around the NHL and a big night in Toronto for the nander brothers all that coming up next so welcome back to another video here at Top Shelf hockey as I mentioned we have lots to talk about here today uh lots of NHL news and rumors to take a look at first up let’s start with news from the NHL waiver wire we learned today that the Ottawa Senators have placed forward Zach McKuen on waivers for the purpose of being demoted to the American Hockey League so we’ll find out at noon eastern time tomorrow if mchan gets picked up or if he will be reassigned uh he still has this year and one more year left on his contract um so he’s probably not going to get picked up a fourth liner with term almost never gets picked up but you just never know um mchan is a you know a big body who’s willing to play physical dropped a gloves uh hasn’t had the greatest run so far in Ottawa although to be honest I was a little bit surprised um he hasn’t been the worst Senator that’s for sure looking at the fourth line which has mostly been godet with mchan and cousins um I would think Nick cousins has been a major disappointment after signing a one-year free agent contract with the Senators late in the off season so I would have thought maybe he’d be the one getting benched here or getting demoted not mchan mchan hasn’t been phenomenal he did have one really good game earlier in the year he’s got two goals on the season they both came in the same game um so not much production but at the same time it’s not really what he’s there to do either so it’s hard to say um you know really what happens in that case but I know he could go down to the miners they want to recall uh Zach ostapchuk he’s been brought back up uh they were impressed with ostapchuk in the preseason and early part of the NHL season he was recalled when Shane Pinto was injured for a while um he played a pretty responsible game um down in the bottom six so the Senators are team we’re going to talk about a little bit later for you know some speculation other changes they may make but for right now oh stop check’s coming up and mchan is going to the miners unless he is claimed and we’ll find that out tomorrow afternoon as I mentioned we started the day with some pretty big news as well uh I do have a video on the channel already discussing it some more details the video was post it late uh for some reason I it thought I hadn’t posted this morning right after the news broke but for some reason uh YouTube glitched on mean and didn’t finish posting for some strange reason I didn’t realize it until earlier this evening but uh the St Louis Blues of fired head coach Drew banister and replaced him with a new head coach Jim Montgomery of course Montgomery was only fired 5 days ago from the Boston Bruins um some people think that might be a record U for fastest coach to get rehired like that and it’s not actually I’m not sure if this is the record but I know of a scenario back and I believe it was 2011 uh Bruce budro when he was fired for the Washington Capitals was hired only two days later by the Anaheim Ducks uh so that was pretty quick I don’t think there’s been any other coaches um faster than that get new employment uh but Jim Montgomery of course and Boston was on the fin of his contract the team started uh slow and there was negotiations for an extension that didn’t go well you know combin up with performance and Sweeney and Cam Neely decided to move on U second time in recent years that they’ve moved on From a Jack Adams award-winning coach uh last time they did it with Bruce Cassidy he went on to win the stainy cup with his next team so we’ll see what happens with Montgomery although I don’t know that the blues are a cup contending team right now but they did uh offer and he signed a 5-year contract to be the head coach with St Louis so I don’t think that was going to be something he was going to be given in bosson either is that much term uh there was also concerns with not being able to have more say over his assistant coaches um so in St Louis he’ll have more um more leeway that way more term more money and I think just be a little bit happier as well and with the direction of the franchise not to say that St Louis is going faster places than Boston I think it’s just better environment and better situation for him personally of course Montgomery has connections to the blues organization uh when he after he had lost his job in Dallas because he was struggling with uh addiction to alcohol and he left the NHL sought treatment got help when he came back it was the blues that gave him that that break that chance to come into their organization as an assistant coach he did that for a couple years before getting hired in Boston so clearly there’s that connection there the history there and he also played with the blues way back when when he was still a player back in the 90s so at the same time lots of history there uh he knows Doug Armstrong well and you know not surprised that St Louis made the move of course this morning when I made the video I kind of speculated that you know there was uh the reason for the move was because the team wasn’t doing well um this new coach that they like becomes available and that’s exactly basically what doug Armstrong said when he spoke to the media later in today he said basically this move was made because Montgomery became available if the Bruins don’t fire Jim Montgomery maybe they give a little bit more Long Leash here to Drew banister but I mean he still had banister still had the rest of this year and one more year on his contract so that’s you know it’s a tough scenario uh for them but he said Armstrong said this is probably going to be his last coaching change that he’s involved in we know he’s eventually going to hand over the Reigns here to Alex Steen who’s the assistant GM and will eventually be the GM of the Blues down the road so uh Big Move by the St Louis Blues uh certainly a great coach getting another opportunity with an organization that he has history with so not a huge shocker but at the same time I think not necessarily one that everybody kind of seen coming at least not this quickly I mean when we talked before about organizations that you know Montgomery might land with here in the near future we talked about Montreal we talked about Detroit you know St Louis was a team that came up uh because of the history but it just wasn’t apparent and imminent here that a change was going to be made but like I said when coaches become available sometimes it changes their opinions on what they need to do so they jumped on it before he went elsewhere so smart move I think by Doug Armstrong and Alex we’ll see where things go on that front some other quick uh injury updates and roster moves around the league today Carolina activated Seth Jarvis so he’s back uh Kil cioff who was injured with the Minnesota Wild and they were really concerned uh I know they were frustrated as well because of the the non calls you could say by cof did have an MRI done today and kind of the uh the outcome of that was that it’s not as bad as it seemed and he’s been able to avoid a more serious injury so he shouldn’t be out too long so capris off still might miss some time they haven’t exactly confirmed that but at least it’s not serious longterm or anything of that nature so that very much a postive now tonight of course was a big night in Toronto uh for the especially for the nander brothers they took on the Utah Hockey Club and in Utah’s first visit to uh to Scotia Bank kinaa in Toronto uh first game for the nander brothers to play together of course Alex neander signed a couple days ago with the one-way deal uh in Toronto after starting the year on an AHL only deal with the Marley’s um of course with all the injuries and everything they’ve had they they signed theander so we could play in the NHL here with his brother I know pregame there was lots of interviews um all his teammates were saying William was very very excited and the brothers were pumped to play their first game uh as you know teammates in a really long time um so good on them the 13th set of NHL Brothers to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs uh in the history of the club and they’re the only the fifth set of Brothers to play for the club at the same time and appear in the same game so so 13 different Brothers have appeared it means that there’s obviously some sets that have played for the Leafs just not together at the same time um but five different sets of Brothers have and uh they’re the fifth ones to do it so some history there and some great news and of course the leaps won and William the Landers scored a winning goal so obviously he was uh feeling good tonight and enjoying the fact that his brother is Ry shotgun there with him now in Toronto now as I mentioned uh some rumors around the NHL some uh talk and speculation about what teams might be up to here one we’ll talk about Vancouver I know they uh they beat the arw Senators yesterday and they were doing they did it without Quinn Hughes for the bulk of the game who was kicked out early on a major penalty uh for boing against his good friend and uh Senator senman Josh Norris um and you know a lot of people didn’t like to call it really wasn’t that vicious it wasn’t that malicious I definitely don’t think there was any intent but it’s just the way the rule book is written when it’s when the call is boarding or crosschecking and it’s deemed to be a major and it’s a major if there’s an injury and and injury is you know physical you know obvious nature when there’s blood or anything like that that’s how the rule is written crosschecking and boarding major are ejections the game’s conduct comes with it automatically uh so it’s not like a case of like a high stick where they can call a double Miner um you know it’s not the same rule so it’s just the way the rule is set I mean like I said it it seemed like uh you know wasn’t that wasn’t that bad but I mean if you seen Norris afterwards like he his face was banged up pretty good he went face first into the Dasher uh he’s got a busted lip and the cuts on his face and nose uh um like you know he was busted up pretty good he had to leave for a few ships to get repairs and obviously because of the fact that he was bloodied up that’s considered injury and you know Hughes goes to uh out of the game so they were forced to play with 5D but one of the pairings on the Blue Line in Vancouver that they haven’t been thrilled with is the Susi and Myers pairing uh which I know when Myers was resigned in the offseason I was quite surprised I personally thought they signed him for too long and too much the fact were bringing them back like okay maybe they s them to like a one-year cheaper deal something along those lines and they went like 3 years and like 3 million or whatever like and that pair has not done the greatest uh and there’s lots of talk that they’re trying to find ways to upgrade that blue line and the name that keeps coming up in a room will connect it to the con is Marcus petson out of Pittsburgh we know that Alvine and Rutherford know him very well from their time in Pittsburgh uh he’s now a pening UFA uh we know that he did he and his agent did have discussions with DUIs on a contract extension in Pittsburgh and never worked out uh to the point they get a deal done and then I think the way the season started du was going of put everything like that on hold he’s like I’m not signing anybody at this point until I have a better idea what this team is like uh because obviously they were not doing anywhere near the level of play that they hoped they would so we’ll see obviously the Canucks are you know there are other defenseman that are out there but Pon is the name to watch and very much connected there and it wouldn’t be shocking if they do pull off a move sometime soon they did pick up Eric branstrom has been a good fit but obviously Eric branstrom is nothing like Susi or Myers completely different type of defenseman and I do wonder if um they can they want like a bigger more defensive style defenseman to maybe U replace one of those guys on not pair so we’ll see what they end up doing but Pon right now appears to be their target but there is competition I know Edmonton was mentioned as a potential destination for him as well and ton of course we know that the rumors around them continue to swirl about adding Center depth I think they’re pretty content with their blue line pretty content with their goal tending for the most part the forward group isn’t too bad they’re going to have to Tinker around the edges like that’s what they always do um adding somebody who can play a third line Center rle seems to be the main focus and the main preference here for this team we talked the other day about a player like anzam Cadre or Ryan O’Reilly that came from the athletic and James Myrtle kind of musing over those you know uh names that are linked to the leavs from their past histories there um but obviously like said the thing with both of those scenarios is that they both have term and the money makes things complicated so as much as you know it’s fun to think about and it was interesting to talk about and especially when it comes to if you think about the fit and everything like there’s lots of reason to say that would make a great idea that’s a great move they they would benefit well from having a player like that it’s just going to be really complicated some other names getting mentioned now um in circles around the leaf Center targets include some more names that might be more feasible including Seattle’s Yanni gourd now there’s still a possibility that gourd resigns in Seattle I don’t think that’s 100% given he gets traded but again a tenacious you know um centerman who can play you know a hard a hard style you can say he’s not a big guy but he he plays bigger than what he is um you know not going to give you a ton of offense but he’s capable of chipping in and it just might make your team hard hard to play against you know good on penal and kill good on face offs that type of stuff so that that’s a name Mel granin and San Jose is another name to watch as well uh he’s played really well for the Sharks after kind of being a player that they picked up as a you know Cast Away you could say and he’s been a good fit there now I would caution with that because granin has surprised in San Jose and and been very productive and sometimes he just can’t replicate that so we’ll see where it goes but it’s a name that’s out there uh of course we’ve heard about Brock Nelson in New York with the Islanders but again I don’t see the Islanders selling unless they’re for sure out of the playoffs it kind of depends on where things go another name was Bruins centerman Trent Frederick again they’ve made the coaching change they’ve won a couple of games I don’t see the Bruins selling if they think they’re going to the playoffs but Frederick is a pending UFA and there is some uncertainty there about his future but even if they get to the point that they don’t know that they’re going to be able to resign Frederick I don’t know if they’re going to want to trade him to their one of their biggest Rivals and somebody who they could run into in the playoffs so again difficult to say what happens in that front so gr L gour might be the more likely candidates amongst that group but again we’ll have to see where things go now in Ottawa of course we know the senators are in a rough stretch right now a lot of the players are looking at the November calendar going here we go again they had a pretty good October um and they were trending towards being at least as good as last year maybe a little bit ahead of schedule not a lot but the fact was is that it was you know with all the changes they made a lot of people would have considered that to be be good but then this latest stretch they had a couple of really good road games they beat the Leafs and they beat the Bruins things were trending well then they had to go um they had a game at home against the Flyers where the Flyers uh snuck up on them and caught up in the third period and L lost it overtime they got a point out of it it’s like okay we played some really good hockey lately yeah we we can’t let that happen but it’s not a big deal and then they go to Carolina and Carolina is one of the best teams in the NHL had a rough game they get some really bad calls I’m not saying the officiating is about screwed them there but there was some some calls there that definitely changed the flow and momentum of the game and the sends failed to manage that well and not deal with it the best and and they lost 4 nothing it wasn’t really a 4 nothing game in my opinion but nonetheless they lost and you know what going into Carolina and losing in their burn again it’s not something that you would make that big a deal over they’re a heck of a team and you played a good game you get some bad some rough bounces some rough calls and you move on but then you you’re like okay well now we have a home stretch coming up we got like four or five games at home but this home stand has been absolutely disas ous for them you know they they got the Oilers coming in they got the golden knights coming in they got the kanaks coming in the Oilers and the golden knights both coming in where those teams are on a backto back and where ottawa’s rested both teams have injuries you know the Oilers didn’t have a couple of their middle six forwards they were without Darnell nurse you know and then you get the golden knights no Mark Stone uh Patra Angelo missed that game and they blow it and then the Canucks come in and again it just keeps repeating itself they made a push at the end if you just look at the the uh scoreboard 4-3 like okay didn’t look that bad but it was it really was some to many breakdowns they they’re not playing the same style of game that they were in October and I don’t know what happened some switch flipped and they were a very tight 200t defensive minded team that was producing goals the power play was on fire everything was firing right and then it just all fell apart and I don’t get it it’s hard to understand but now there’s lots of speculation how do they fix this how do they get back and Bruce garok uh the reporter for the Ottawa Sun and works with TSN he had an article out today talking around with uh Steve stos he had some quotes from him some quotes from players and some quotes from League Executives and essentially um the kind of thought process is here is GM Steve stos would prefer that the uh the solutions if you will will come internally and they’re going to start with obviously like I said Zach mchu on waivers they’re bringing up zacho stch is stch going to come in and fix everything no he’s not defensively they’ve had some breakdowns and I hate to pick on that kid because I really like him but Tyler clevens had some really rough games I really think they need to look at left defense uh obviously they have Sanderson and Shabbat and even Jake Sanderson has not been his best this year I kind of wonder if he might be too focused on trying to make Team USA for the four nations face off which I don’t think he’s going to now um Jake serson I think will have an amazing career and be one of the Senator’s alltime greatest defenseman I think that potential is still very much there but right now it’s rough he’s not as good defensively and he’s not good as good offensively he doesn’t have any even strength points this year all of his points come on special teams the fact that he’s played 20 hockey games with the caliber he is and the amount of ice time he gets and he hasn’t gotten one assist is shocking absolutely shocking and he gets power play time obviously which is where he’s getting his points um so the the left defense with clevin having some rough games lately he started off really good the last two or three games he’s been rough and but the organization is not deep in that spot and they don’t have like a somebody with more experience where they could sit clle and give them the ice time so I really think you’re going to see the Senators try to add more of a veteran presence another like Lefty does not nobody with you know significance but like you know a veteran third pair player on shorter term deal something something has to give the other name that Bruce gck mentions if I’m talking to League Executives and there’s no confirmation that they’ve had conversations but he wonders if they want to really shake up the core if this core can continue to prove that it can’t win together it talks about Josh Norris maybe being a player they might look to move uh Norris is making seven .95 he’s having a good season he’s got eight goals on the year obviously so far this year he’s been healthy playing better missed a lot of time with some shoulder injuries and the fact that he’s healthy right now and producing might be a good value for him if they were ever going to move him and might be a good time to do it now I don’t know that they’re going to rush out I don’t think they’re going to make any Rush decisions here but if you look at the core guys of like Brady kachak Tim stla Norris bson you know Shabbat Sanderson to me he might be the one that makes the most sense Drake bson has a phenomenal contract and he’s been one of their most productive guys he’s at a point per game he’s got 20 points in 20 games uh you get clo jaru slowed down a little bit but again that’s I think combination not just him but the team to me you want to look you got to look more at The Supporting Cast it hasn’t really been an issue of the core not producing um the the support players they’ve brought in in the off season looking at Nick cousins you’re looking at Michael Mario you you know even lenus alar hasn’t been as advertised so I mean allm Mark’s been up and down but I think longterm you you believe he will figure it out Nick Jensen’s been really good really good stabilizer back there but you know like these other like David pan has got a lot going on personally missed a lot of time this year like that’s um you know he he hasn’t really been able to get going you know he came in new team very early in the season going to take a big stretch to time off because of the personal situation with his his wife and the the new baby and all the complications like and he needed to do that and I fully support that but it’s obviously impacted his rhythm and his ability to kind of be you know find Rhythm and get going on the season right so the pon signing hasn’t worked out but you can excuse that one then you get cousins hasn’t worked out amadio hasn’t worked out and then like from the back end they’re not producing the amount of offense either they’re just not not moving to Puck quite as well so in all honesty you know um they could use another left shot Puck mover or right shot Puck mover like somebody’s got to be coming in there on that third pair to produce a little bit of something it does not to be a lot but Travis heck’s not going to give you much and cev’s been really good but now he’s struggling and he really could use a reset but there’s nobody there to really relieve him so I I think left defense for Ottawa and I like I said I it makes what gak is saying about Norris being a potential Target but I don’t think we’re we’re close to that happening just yet but the thing is is you could you could you could take uh if you do move Norris you still have Ridley Greg and Shane Pentel along with Tim St your centers so it is possible you could consider moving one of those guys um and with his injury history if you could find a good return like a hockey type trade maybe that is something you look at but at the same time uh you know you could move maybe because Ridley Greg right now has also struggled to produce he’s play hasn’t played bad but he’s not producing offensively I would move him down to your your third line and maybe give a chance for pinto and Norris to both play top six and one of them has to go to the wing uh and that way you kind of load up your top six a little bit more if you take Greg down and move up pinto to me that would be an easy move to try to generate more um so we’ll see I mean they’re they’re trying to go internal options first I don’t think Steve stos wants to pull the trigger on a big trade here but they they need to look at their defense on the left side they need some support they need some veteran leadership there and then if they do attack the core if things don’t turn around here in the next couple of weeks maybe a guy like Norris is the guy that’s traded for something different to shake things up it could be a an eye opener for this team to kind of get them back on track but uh you get a you know tread lightly here because some these deals are hard to win and you may regret making these moves if you don’t uh get the return you need so we’ll see what happens but lots of uh interesting times to come for the Senators as they try to get their season back on the rails here before it falls off and becomes another shortened season being over early for the eth straight Year let me know your thoughts on all of today’s news and rumors down in the comments we’ll discuss further if you’re new to the channel make sure you subscribe and stick
