baseball careers end in many ways some are unspeakably tragic such as the murder of Lyman bolock a productive contacted her who had a 311 career batting average thuren mson the great Yankee Captain died in a plane crash pitcher Daryl Kyle and the Cardinals had a massive heart attack and passed away his sleep before a game against the Cubs Tyler Skaggs was given a lethal mixture of Fentanyl and oxycotton while these are undeniably horrible situations they are rare baseball careers don’t usually become a Shakespearean drama but beyond the normal things like a torn UCL strained shoulder or broken bone baseball has had a chair of truly gruesome injuries that bring promising careers to a grinding halt these awful acts of Fate come in many different versions batters standing at home plate become unwitting targets and pitchers standing on the mount are helpless when 110 MH line drives come screaming back at them catchers wear the tools of ignorance because no sane person would Crouch by an home plate only to get nicked banged up and run over sometimes multiple times a game all that and still more things like running into a wall or pulling up lame on the bases leave behind a wake of baseball destruction when we watch a baseball player crumpled to the ground clutching head arm or knee we are reminded that our own lives are governed by the same random forces that can bestow blessings and curses alike after all no mle player goes into a game thinking this could be it but for an unfortunate select few that’s exactly what happened the injury was horrible a player lay Rising on the ground screaming in pain his left humor is completely broken producing one of the most iconic injury images of all time in 1999 Baseball fans of Tampa Bay were getting into season two of an expansion team that was destined again to finish last in the AL East as the 1962 Mets can attest playing for an expansion team has its challenges the Devil Rays had taken fistfuls of pitchers the expansion draft including the first overall pick Lefty Tony Saunders from the Florida Marlins it was honestly a surprise he’d been left unprotected given he was just 24 and had pitched well in the postseason starting game three of the NLCS and battling to a one1 score through five innings against the Braves and Hall of Famer John Smoltz saers was gritty undrafted out of the high school he signed with the Marlins for just $11,000 and somehow made it to the big leagues against very long odds the year before he’d gone six and 15 and had led the majors in walks with 111 yet in 15 of his 31 starts he pitched to a 259 ra his record in those games 0 and8 with seven no decisions despite this he’ remained the consant professional going out there and giving his best every start he could he started the 1999 season the same way wild inconsistent and sometimes brilliant the ray sent him down but then he came back up ready to prove himself he beat the Angels in his first game back from the miners next up the Rangers and raing Al MVP Juan Gonzalez that’s who sers was pitching to when his left arm completely fell apart he was musling up a 3-2 fast ball to put the Slugger away and his body completely failed him while such breaks are considered rare sa’s left arm snapping was the fifth such injury to be fallen ml pitcher in the prior 10 years Dave drai in 1989 followed by Norm Charlton Tom Browning and John Smiley in the 1990s only Charlton ever pitched dwell in The Bigs again but Saunders vowed to from his hospital bed he promised to be ready for spring training he rehabed obsessively and by July 2000 had progressed from simulated games to minor league action in August however his left arm broke again in the same spot despite x-rays showing that the sight of the fracture was strong and fully healed doctors were completely mystified ji had come back too and broke his arm a second time but he himself had a rare form of cancer that ended up leading to his arm being amputated saund actually signed with his hometown Orioles in 2005 and made it all the way to spring training but he never again appeared in an Affiliated game in the major leagues there remains just one player who’s actually died as a result of an injury they sustained on an MLB field that’s Ray Chapman of the then Cleveland Indians who mostly played shortstop during his 9-year career heading into the 1920 season the race for Al pennant was sure to be tight by August the Indians held a slim lead of just percentage points over the white socks with the Yankees themselves a half game behind so when the Indians arrived at the Polo Grounds on August 16th to play the Yankees tensions were already High the opener featured two very tough pitchers Steve kaveli of the Indians who threw a spitball faced off against Carl Maes who was a Submariner and a head hunter someone who didn’t mind plunking batters left and right maziz seemed to be one of the most disliked players in the game and conversely Chapman was one of the most liked he was so popular in fact that even the notoriously prickly Tai cob considered him a friend chap was a team first player his 67 sacrifice hits in 1917 remain an MLB record no wonder he was so Beloved the game began at 3:00 p.m. in August which meant it should be light enough to play until around 8:00 p.m. but the day was overcast with a light drizzle since balls were kept in play even when scuffs are covered with mud in tobacco juice P would have a hard time picking up a pitcher’s release Point Chapman let off a fifth inning with the Indians leading three to nothing the very first pitch from Mae hit Chapman in his left temple the impact sounded like the ball had hit Chapman’s backat which is why ma feel of the ball that rolled out to him and threw the first Chapman however lay stricken at home plate somehow he was able to get up and walk towards the gates in Center which led to the locker room there he collapsed and was rushed to the hospital surgeons tried to save him but 12 hours later chap was dead fingers were pointed at Maz who defended himself by saying there was no way he’d put on a fast runner while being down being to nothing the ball was wet Maz claimed he lost control of it it is the most regrettable incident of my baseball career he said I would give anything I could to undo what happened Chapman was a splendid fellow the names of Ray Chapman and Carl Mays will forever be linked As Long As baseball is played as the worst MLB injury ever the label five tool player isn’t used lightly it Den notes someone who can do it all hit for average power steal bases play Stellar defense and make throws like a missile launcher Juan Inc Carion was indeed a five tool Prospect when he was signed out of the Dominican Republic at 16 many in the Tigers organization said he had the most natural Talent of any player they’d seen in the past 20 years but some players seem to have a dark cloud hanging over them as though they displeased the baseball gods or something and carosio himself appeared to have terrible luck he was a September call up in 1997 but he got hit by a pitch and broke his wrist ending his season then in spring training the following year fighting for a roster spot he broke another bone fouling a ball off his foot when he finally made it to Detroit he was spectacular finishing his first 40 games with an Ops plus of 134 he was lifing up to his ability but then once he got a chance to play every day over the next three seasons he faltered a bit he would make a great play and then a head scratcher he would have blistering hot streaks followed by freezing cold ones by 2001 the Tigers and soured on him and ended up sending him to the Reds and thus began Juan inna’s baseball Odyssey that led him to Two World Series titles one in Miami 2003 and another in St Louis in 2006 but still fairly middling success overall in 2007 he was coming off a wrist surgery at trying to fight his swing again which he did in June going out an 18 game hit streak which saw his average climb to 283 took along with nine homers and 47 RBI then came a game against the Reds on August 31 in the sixth inning he was standing in the on Deck Circle when teammate Aaron miles was pitch hitting miles Then followed off an 0 one pitch that got on top of incarna before he could react the ball hit him squarely in the left eye his eye socket was crushed on impact like the disintegration of an egg according to his eventual doctor his optic nerve suffered severe trauma team Dr George Peta said it was one of the worst eye injuries he’d ever seen Yi never healed enough to allow carason to play baseball again his resulting Vision ended up being 2400 it’s not often that an MLB player gets hurt while playing video games that’s exactly what happened to Tiger’s reliever Joel Zaya during in the 2006 ALCS he couldn’t pitch because of an injured wrist apparently sustained during an epic session on the PS2 but that injury didn’t end his career another one would though and it was much more Grizzly without question Joel zay’s fastball ranked among the hardest in the history of MLB during his 2006 rookie season in the ALDS against the Yankees he blew up the radar gun at 103 mph but apparently earlier in the year he managed to hit a blistering 104.8 which was thought then to be the fastest pitch in the history of mangor League Baseball that’s season he announced himself as the next dominant relief arm in baseball poster a plus of 233 making him over twice as valuable as an average MLB pitcher struck out 97 hitters in 83 Innings blowing dudes away with Elite heat and a nasty slider however he would end up appearing in more than 31 games after that in a season for the rest of his career he ruptured a 10 in his right middle finger in May 2007 and missed a few months while recovering from surgery then that offseason Zay was helping his father prepare their family home in the San Diego area as a fire approached they were moving boxes in the Attic but about 60 lbs fell on Zuma’s shoulder separating it Zaya didn’t make it back to the Tigers until June 2008 managing to appear in 21 games things were no better in 2009 when Zaya again went down with a shoulder injury though he came back to pitch in 29 games by August he couldn’t lift his right arm over his head and the ensuing shoulder surgery shut him down again for the remainder of the season in 2010 zumaya was finally back to being healthy and Ting 100 mph routinely on the radar gun he had worked relentlessly to get himself back on the field and by June 28th he’ already pitched more Innings than he had in 2007 2008 2009 his ra plus was back at 164 he was Elite and dominating again but in a game against the twins facing delman young zumaya reached back for a fast ball and then heard a loud and disgusting pop in his elbow he later explained it felt like my elbow exploded it felt like someone took a hammer and shattered it completely an MRI revealed that he had a non-displaced fracture of the old cranon the Bony tip of the elbow right under the skin Zaya thought his career was done but the Tiger’s front office thought different apparently they thought that because there was no ligament damage zumaya could probably return the next season unfortunately he didn’t instead he had an exploratory elbow surgery in May 2011 and missed the entire season while he did recover in time to try another comeback 2012 he tore his UCL throwing live BP during one of his first spring training workouts he ended up retiring officially in February 2014 that pitch that he threw to delman Young in 2010 ended up being the last official pitch of his major league baseball career before we go perhaps it’s best to clear up one of the most misunderstood career ending injuries in MLB history that of Mr Kirby Pucket who got 2,000 hits faster than any player in MLB history except for Mr hit him where they Ain we willly Keeler he had grown up in some of the toughest projects in Chicago and only made it to pro ball because he went to an open tryout after going and drafted out of high school he proceeded to then lead the Minnesota Twins to Two World Series Championships become a 10-time All-Star and win six gold gloves in center field he ended up being elected to Hall of Fame 2001 after his career had ended in 1995 or was it 1996 but what’s not is this Kirby Puckett’s last official EB in the big leagues came on The Season’s last game in 1995 when Pucket was hit squarely in the face with the Dennis martinz fastball breaking his upper left jaw he would never again appear at a regular season game suggesting that the HBP had ended his career but Pucket had recovered enough to attend spring training in 1996 where he hit 344 in fact in his last two unofficial ABS he got a couple hits off of Greg Maddox unfortunately on the morning of March 28th though Pucket woke up and realized something was terribly wrong a big black Cole was impairing the vision in his left eyee he went to the twins training facility shouting I can’t see I can’t see they sent him to specialist at John Hopkins in Baltimore where he was diagnosed with glaucoma which apparently ran in his family despite three surgeries pocket’s Vision never turned to the level at which he could play Major League Baseball again at his retirement press conference he said don’t take light for granted because tomorrow isn’t promised to any of us the question of course becomes did the hit by pitch contribute at all to the onset of his gu glaucoma doctors who examine pocket’s case say probably not the left jaw was fractured and Pucket glaucoma showed up in his right eye till the morning of March 28th Pucket has shown no signs of glaucoma because the disease is called the thief in the night only regular testing can catch it and Pucket at the young age he still was obviously wasn’t getting regular tests some have since suggested that Pucket blurry vision had begun after his jaw was broken but his 344 spring average argues against that as does the fact that no eye doctor had examin him until March 28th still it’s easy to see how the two events have become related but regardless it does seem like this has gone down as one of the most prevalent misunderstandings in recent baseball history in regards to Major injuries the life of a Major League baseball player seems like the stuff of Dreams who wouldn’t want to make millions travel the world with your friends get loads of free gear and sponsorships but unfortunately as these guys learned it can end at any moment one pitch one AB one slide one leaping grab while yes elite players have mastered the sport they all still exist on the thin line between playing and not playing fate can be cruel think of the athletic prowess bestowed on someone like Bo Jackson only to see it all end with one tackle and broken hip but every athlete in a way is Bo Jackson but in terms of talent probably none ever were but in that the end will come sometimes you get to have opposing teams lavish you with presents and other times you hold weepy press conferences announcing that there’s no coming back still for the more Anonymous M it could be as simple as a tweet Tony Saunders vowed to come back and never did he broke his arm again trying so deep did the LLY game running him same with Joel Zaya who threw until his elbow got obliterated mon in Carion had his eviscerated Ray Chapman literally died playing the game he loved despite all this danger players endure at all levels of baseball because like Chapman like zumaya like Saunders we all love our great game Risk to be damned and we’re willing to sacrifice near anything to get to play it for as long as we can now thank you all for watching I hope you enjoyed today’s video and if you did consider liking and subscribing and checking out this playlist for more essay content just like this have a great rest of
