🕵️‍♂️ Transcript:

yeah I think just first of all congratulations to u to Kansas State man you know they came out they hly got a great program and a great um and a great team they did a they dropped two games in a row the last two weeks and tonight was senior night they came out and played inspired football and and really um and really put it on us you know it was not our night tonight and um just give them credit for that you know obviously several reasons for that I think you know we did not do a good job in stopping the run you know right from the start um the quarterback who had not been running the ball obviously he can run we all know that but they had been holding back a little a little bit in his Run game um you know but we anticipated him being able to they were going to use him as a runner this this uh this game which they did but we did not do a good job of slowing them slowing that down particularly in the first half their running backs an outstanding player we know that is one of the top running backs in the Big 12 um you know and but if you if you can’t slow the running game down it’s going to be a long night that’s what it was in the first half and we never could get anything going offensively you know I think tonight was our obviously our worst night uh on Fourth downs we we couldn’t keep drives going we did not get a fourth down tonight um we had a hard time protection tonight I thought you know this is we’ve been solid in protections but tonight was probably our worst night as far as protecting the quarterback U giving up pressures uh and sacks um you know so um just but when you got both sides of the ball not working well that’s what’s going to end up happening tonight and that’s what it was questions for Coach Keegan then Ross coach you sat with Mason Fletcher and some team leaders in the offseason just kind of talked about how they wanted to invest in and you and this program and come back ultimately it’s not working out they’re not getting what they came back for how disappointing is it that that go that those guys local guys that decided to trust you and trust the program they just aren’t getting what they came back for at the end of the day well I think what they are getting is being around there the guys that they love who being around so I think they are getting something out of it you know I think you’re looking at terms of just straight wins and losses I think there’s so much that we do and invest in these players and and that that is so much more than wins and losses I mean obviously we all want to win and and that’s a big part of it but you know those that’s 12 Saturdays that’s that’s 12 days out of the year I mean for them what they do with these guys day in and day out and how they’re around each other how they support each other um they’re living life with each other so I think they are getting a lot out of being back here they’ve they’ve enjoyed being with their brothers um you know obviously they they want to have success on the field too um you know and I think individually we’ve had some great guys with great success I mean Cory Conor’s had an outstanding season again he’s back to back a th yards um you know we’ve had some other players that have done some really good things throughout this season so but obviously yeah they want to win the games on Saturdays there’s no question about that that’s why I think next week’s big a big game for us senior day to be able to send these seniors out and the ones that did come back the ones that have been in this program for a long time um that have seen everything you know from you know being in the final four to you know to ushering in the Big 12 uh conference so you know these guys I think have been around and seen a lot I think part part of that is is their Brotherhood that they like being around each other and so you know that part I think is what they’ll cherish for sure SC you guys have failed to score 25 plus points in any game since the Texas Tech outing what what continues to be you think the biggest problem offensively in terms of just executing and getting that ball across the goal line yeah I mean I think you know it’s several things depending on what game you look at is it turnovers is it penalties um you know tonight third down and fourth down were huge not not being able to convert first first downs tonight uh you know I think um so I think it’s several different things depending on what game it is and you know and and obviously we got to do a much better job we got to score more points we understand all that I think at times throughout this year we’ve moved the ball very well and you know but just didn’t score enough points and I think obviously that’s the name of the game is to get in the end zone and score points any other questions Keegan I got one what is there something just different with with Brendan is there something off at the end of the day I mean it just looks like there’s stuff that he’s not hitting that he was usually hitting earlier in the season you know it’s hard it’s hard to pinpoint any of that um you know I think certainly um you get an opportunity to make plays and in the throw game you got to be able to make them and and I think there’s several reasons if it’s if it’s a pressure are you getting pressure I mean I know tonight early uh guys were getting getting to him you know as he’s getting ready to throw the football they’re in his face and you know I think obviously there’s going to be some issues with that um if you do have time then you got to be able to throw and catch a couple errand throws we also had some uncharacteristic drops tonight I thought for the first time we hadn’t had many drops um you know I think we probably ended up with four drops tonight which that hurts and that hurts that hurts the Rhythm I mean you know so I can’t just pin it all on storage but I think it’s a multitude of things you know if if you miss protections or if you drop the football when it is there um particularly in that first half when we needed to get some some plays going into get in that Rhythm you know I think a lot of times offenses are Rhythm Rhythm offense you got you have to be able to get in that Rhythm to be able to keep it going a Johnson hadn’t run much in the past two three weeks did they kind of catch you off guard a little bit early running him kind of as much as they did those first I don’t know what two three series well I mean you know we had anticipated him potentially trying to run him a little bit more I mean he he got dinged up I think maybe in the Colorado game so several you know three or four games ago so they really hadn’t run him as much but we felt like coming this week that they they you know we’re going to probably run him a little bit more um you know we we just didn’t defend that very well at all with the run with him in the running game and obviously you know gon’s is an outstanding back you have to know where he’s going and I think you know some of those things where they’re you know he’s going to the left and the quarterback’s coming out the back end to the right I mean you got to they split the defense so obviously there’s going to be uh less hats going to be around the football and um you know obviously did a good job early in the game particularly that first drive they came right out and and ran him on the first play and then ended up scoring on that same Drive um you know you got to get you got to do a much better job in defending that q- run game following up how much does that change what they’re able to do with giddens when they run him like they did right away early so now you have to respect Avery and then that the mesh plays and and whatever just seemed like they were really tough yeah I mean you end up splitting the defense in half really essentially what ends up happening so now you have to have a hat for the quarterback pull game and when you when you when you remove one more hat there so somebody’s got to whip a block you know on the other side so get therefore he gets free you know and you’re not you know you miss one tackle there’s nobody else there and they they popped a couple big runs on us um because of that um some Miss tackles and um but it certainly is is puts more pressure on your defense when you do have a running quarterback because now it’s 11 guys you have to defend in the running game as opposed to 10 any other questions for Coach I got one all right final one do you have an update on Jake gold I think he was active but just didn’t see the field yeah I mean you know I think he gave it a shot tonight he was um he was probably the biggest question mark heading into the game um tried to get him there he was close to getting there I think he he went out and played early and then just couldn’t go him couldn’t be himself couldn’t run like he wanted to um and we ended up you know having to set him down and uh so we’ll don’t have an update you know hopefully uh when we get back this week I hope you know maybe it didn’t irritate us anything and and he’s going to be able to get back for for next week um we’ll know more once we get back to Cincinnati and get that thing looked at thanks guys Cory you able to hit the thousand yard Mark late in the game um despite the tough game obviously how does it feel to be the first running back since Mike Warren to be able to do that and do it in a Cincinnati uniform uh it feels it feels good but you know I rather get the win for the team um put my personal success aside man you know uh these guys work work really hard these guys beside me and these guy these coaches work really hard and it just it’s tough not getting a win for them despite getting a th yards Cory why do you think it was such a tough tough grind in that first few drives for the offense and then eventually you were able to get going but it just seemed like little a little bit too late for the snowball to get rolling downhill uh we got to get credit to the uh to K Kansas State you know they’re they’re a good team tough defense you know um we just got to get credit when credit is due and and um we had a we had a little slow start but you know we just got to give credit to them they were a good team cor do you have me here yes sir okay I’m I’m I’m not very good with my it skills here uh how do you get the guys going for next week um I think I think all the guys are are still going you know everybody’s motivated especially the seniors um you know it’s senior day we got we need that one win um because we we’re trying to send the seniors off right and uh the underclassman understand that the older guys understand that everybody understands that like we got a Never Back Down mentality how difficult is it on the sidelines when things go that bad that quick where you guys are are down 10 nothing and feels like you’re kind of swimming Upstream all game is it is it tough to kind of keep everybody connected and motivated and how did this group handle it uh I don’t think it’s tough to keep everybody connected and motivated I think um I think everybody did a great job on the sideline encouraging everybody staying motivated staying connected nobody was on the sideline creating any negativity or anything like that everybody was was on the sideline encouraging and fighting the whole game Derek what did you see from Avery Johnson specifically in the Run game it just seemed like they came out hot with him and he hadn’t been running a lot and in the past few weeks how hard was that to adjust to um it was an adjustment you know um obviously had playmakers all over the field um and with him adding that threat of you know run the ball having a a running back lead lead lead the way pulling tackles pulling guards things like that um it was just an adjustment that you know we had to make but um you know they had a great scheme and plan for us and did a great job was the physicality they brought to the to this game especially right from jump a surprise to you guys or what was the impact of that early on I wouldn’t necessarily A surpris us um they for sure brought um a physical mindset you know they played physical um from start to finish um it’s something that you know you kind of got to expect week to week you know a conference like this great teams um we came into it no it’s going to be a physical game but um I feel like ultimately they they did a great job of um being a pH physical team you’re a senior what does next week mean to you um it honestly it means more than just being a senior um this is an unbelievable group uh with guys from how we jaled together how we’ve become you know a Brotherhood so just obviously your senior night you want to um end the season at home with a win you know get a fans the city you know a great a great end to a season but also figh for that bowl game um with with the the fifth five wins you know six six wins just hanging out there uh you know you you just want to complete the season with a with a high note and fighting for another game you guys had that you guys had that fourth and 13 and there was that Force fumble and then it kind of ended up getting kicked out of bounds was that just a moment where you’re thinking dude nothing can go right today and and how how tough was it to move on from that um unfortunately you know I was the one that kicked it out of bounds um you know in the moment playing fast trying to make a play um unfortunate moment uh I think our our coach did a great job you know saying next play but you know being that moment being that guy you know obviously a big moment in the game uh you trying to get the momentum get the ball back to off offense uh just a hard hard moment um you just kind of got to move on but um pivotal moment Tony just as a veteran um guy that joined the the team this season how tough is it to just be in this position at 5 and six after you guys started the season pretty well all things considered it’s extremely tough you know we got guys that put in the work put us in position to be 5 and two it’s football sometimes things don’t go your way but we just got to keep swinging and go out here this last game and get our all Tony what do you what do you think’s been the biggest issue in the passing game has it been your own individual or this receiver’s ability to separate do you think it’s it’s it’s an accuracy issue what’s been the biggest problem with just especially the downfield passing the last few month few weeks it just goes hand in hand we can’t point the finger at one guy I mean I got to do my part and get open and you know SW we hold your accountable but we all in it together it’s not just one p one person you can point the finger it’s all on the whole offense and the receivers how do you attack this next week knowing you know it it it hasn’t gone the way you’ve wanted over the last couple games how do you kind of attack this next week and say hey we still have a chance to to get to a bowl game to accomplish some of the things we wanted to accomplish attack it the same way you’ve been attacking it since week one you know the work is the work you got to go out there and give it all you got but you can’t you can’t cut Corners especially this last week got to go out there and lay it all on the line what we have nothing to lose so better to go out there and just work hard and the game will take take care of your what what’s a Vibe of this team you guys going to this last game and you know let’s be honest there’s there’s going to be guys that that that might not not stay I don’t know for sure but it it’s kind of a weird time in football where some guys stay some guys leave but uh you guys still need a six wi and then you got to hope to have a team that can go to a bowl game I mean we’re going to roll with the guys that’s out there I mean it’s the locker room is still Bal nobody’s nobody’s out of it I mean those guys that are out of they’ll separate theel but we’re going to go out there with the guys that want to compete and we going to go go hopefully win this game what did you see tonight Tony just in in your snaps 10 targets obviously sorby was able to to figure out you were getting open against this defense what was what was working well for you and to be able to score two touchdowns I mean just doing what we usually do you know we had some corner routs to the end zone he just found me I mean just trying to help the guys out but he just he was looking for me tonight but I rather just have the win the receptions and the targets don’t matter I rather have get this one
