right there’s a lot to go over obviously we know that the Leafs are in the trade market for a center a bunch of reports have come out regarding that from don’t whether it’s David Al whether it’s La freem a bunch of guys are saying that the Leafs are looking to acquire Center specifically probably to man that third line and Elliot Freeman dropped a report a few days days ago and we covered it briefly how the Leafs will be monitoring the trade market for centers as the season progress progresses sorry and as this is going on uh reports of started to come out from other teams and we kind of are realizing which centers are actually available and one guy that has really taken over the spotlight for over the past few days we’ve seen it in our streams a ton of leaf fans saying they want this guy so fig we discuss it today that player is Brock Nelson who is a pending UFA so could highend scor slot shot Creator and pending UFA Brock Nelson beat on the trade block this season all signs are pointed to him being on that trade block and we’re going to dive into his stats and all that in a minute here but what are your initial thoughts on Brock Nelson he has a $6 million cap hit 33 2025 free agent AKA next season he will be uh this would be a rental essentially if they acquire him at the deadline here but when looking at a you know left-handed shot third line Center this could be uh one of the more intriguing options surrounding what other players are available at this current juncture of the trade market it’s a very interesting fit I think and I’ve been seeing it a lot from fans on Twitter online obviously in our live streams a lot of people were bringing up Brock Nelson that he is a name that a lot of people want me personally I think I’m on the other side of this I don’t think that this would be a good fit for the Leafs I’ve been on record saying that out of the all the options available right now I think Nick buag might be actually the best option for the Leafs he has the size he’s a right-hand shot uh he plays with some physicality as well and obviously the size helps so I think that the Leafs are looking to get bigger anyway and I think that he’s pretty responsible defensively to a degree now Brock Nelson on the other hand I think that’s the opposite this is an offensive player and obviously he isn’t having a great season so far this season he actually has the lowest expected goals this season so far in his entire NHL career or what’s projected to happen at least so um you know that isn’t great I know the Islanders aren’t great as well so that might have something to do with it but I think he’s very offensive minded and yes the Leafs have other guys that they’re going to rely on to be defensive and responsible defensively as well and Austin Matthews and John tar is and their other two centers but I think you want a guy who you can at least depend on on in certain situations defensively and who can be responsible if you’re going to go out and trade for a guy and this is a guy that I don’t look for from defense I mean the defensive zone faceoffs are the the least of his career that’s where he takes the least amount of faceoffs and where he starts and uh over the you know course of his entire career if you look here at the J fresh chart which I love these charts and I think they tell a little bit of a story as well defense not great and on a slow decline as well throughout his career yes he is getting younger but I think that is an issue for me yes he would add some offense there on the third line but these are all things you have to consider and the cap hit as well you make 6 million Which is far too much so you’d have to get the New York Islanders to retain as well which is you know that shouldn’t be an issue but you’re you know if you’re retaining 50% here yes it’s $3 million but you’re going to have to find a way to fit that $3 million in your salary cap space as well if you’re the leaf so they’re going to have to have to move some pieces out and it might be a little bit messy whereas if you look at some of the other options available on the trade market you’re looking at $2 million 2.5 something in that range it’s a lot easier to fix fit uh under the cap especially if you do you know some retain salary on those deals so I think Brock Nelson can be a bit of an interesting fit and we’ll get into some other stuff as well and what fans are saying but um yeah I’m not too sold on this player specifically yeah and again the defense isn’t bad I’m probably a bit more optimistic regarding his potential output if they go ahead and acquire him but his projected time on as you can see there on the right is a second liner so he could you know slot into the second line depending on how things go although he has not had a great season and his capit is 6 million look again you look at the Leaf’s projected cap space they would need the Islanders in this case to retain and maybe the Islanders would want to take a guy like Nick Robertson and TR like this we’re going to keep bringing him up all all season long until ultimately he is probably dealt there and uh basically he’s been on a major decline here for the past little bit you can see his stats he has 14 points in 22 games which quite frankly isn’t that bad I mean he is 33 years old he just turned 33 but he can still score goals at a fairly decent clip at the end of the day um there are probably some better options whether that’s Morgan Frost whether that’s bead any of those guys are probably better options I would argue though that Brock Nelson can provide you a bit more certainty regarding what they’re uh what if they’re looking for a guy who can guarantee points guarantee at least some more you know a higher floor I’d say Brock Nelson is probably a better option than some of these other guys you don’t know exactly what you’re going to get from Morgan Frost and again that’s kind of where the Leafs have tend the in the past Brad living has like to got guys I mean they saw in the offseason they got guys like Max Patch ready someone you know is going to produce fairly at least you know what you’re going to get regarding a role and I think Brock Nelson could be that uh could be that guy that’s the only reason I think the Leafs might be actually pursuing him is because of their past Tendencies with at least getting guys that have a defined role even though the role is on the uh the decline but looking at where he’d fit in I mean this is kind of a skewed lineup because of all the injuries but in a healthy leas lineup I’d say the third line yeah definitely he would be the third line Center on this team especially because of the weight to ours has been playing we know Austin Matthews is going to be fine after he’s healthy and he returns to the lineup so those will be your top two centers again and then you need a guy for the third line Center position so I do tend to agree with what you said like with Brock Nelson you kind of know what you’re going to get especially for that money and obviously he’s more experienced Morgan Frost is a little bit younger even bu’s Dad yes he’s a little bit older but uh you know he’s played a lot of time in uh Arizona where the hockey didn’t really matter they didn’t make the playoffs a lot so there is you know a little bit of that as well have one pretty good playoff run with the Edmonton Oilers there as a rental at the trade deadline but uh I think with Brock Nelson you might be getting a little bit more consistent consistency in a way at least offensively I think the defensive thing is is a real problem for me because I think breu is you know really preaching um you know roles throughout the lineup and identity on each line so I feel like they’re going to want more of that and again it’s it’s high risk right with the salary the Islanders retaining obviously they’re going to want something uh significant back for his Services as you know even if if you were taking all of his salary but now that you’re retaining you’re probably going to have to give up even more so I’m a little bit worried about that but in terms of the Islanders and what they need I mean if you look up and down their lineup they probably need more scoring and they’re having trouble scoring and notoriously that’s just the way they play and Lou larella has built that team that way so they’re you know maybe they’re looking at Nick Robertson I think Nick Robertson at this point can be Expendable I’ve really been defending him all season but I was saying you know what let’s get to you know the 1520 game Mark we’re past that now we know our answer you know yes it’s bad luck he could have a few more goals but uh I don’t think it’s going to do it for the Leafs with him on the third line so he could be on the way out and I think a lot of teams could use a player like that like the Islanders I think they could use some more scoring as well and they want to get younger too because obviously Brock Nelson a couple of these guys Andrew Lee they’re all getting a little bit older so they probably want to get younger that could be a very significant trade chip for the Toronto Maple yeah I’m on I mean I’ve been on that fence for a while I think he’s I think Nick Robertson’s time in Toronto is slowly winding down and let us know down below what your thoughts are on of course the Brock Nelson Trad before I wrap up um we have some updates surrounding their practice lines today so again it’s there’s a lot of things on the go here and I mean take these with a grain of salt they have the same fourth line as Steve D laoren you have Robertson Minton gankin Alex neander and then of course you have the homberg and you have Matthews in here now on the second line Center mcmah toar marer and this is something we discussed in the Stream a little bit here is this second line and the question will be whether or not they actually use and they keep that top linez it has been playing unbelievably well I don’t see them actually demoting Aus Matthews to the second line here for tomorrow night’s game but merer has been playing so well with taras can you see a world where they actually rock with this second line of pontis Holberg Austin Matthews and William neander and also keep in mind that Matthew NIS is not probably not back Wednesday but he’s going to be back at some point soon so maybe he would slot in where Bobby McMahon is but I have a feeling that maybe uh Craig breay wants to continue to pair up Mitch marer with John tarz because of how well they’ve played you can’t argue the results they’ve been playing unbelievably well winning six of their last seven or something like that seven and one of their last eight they’ve been unbelievably uh they’ve been unbelievably well do you see a world where Matthews gets slot down to the second line or maybe tar and Marner get slot down in the second line and they move things around that way absolutely I think that this is exactly what we’re going to see tomorrow night and I if Matthew’s plays that’s the big asteris there as well right because we don’t know for sure but it’s heading in that direction which is a good thing but you know with the Leafs you can pin any line as the first line or second line at this point we know what the third line and the fourth line is but the first two lines doesn’t matter who’s on it right the really good lines and I wouldn’t break up McMahon tarz and Marner at this point they’ve been playing really really well together and I’m a big fan of Matthews coming back and not playing with Marner because he has been playing really well and I don’t like the way that they play with each other I think that they yes they can put up points but I don’t like the way that they play with each other so um I think it’s a good thing that they’re being split up Neil ander’s been playing fantastic I think G Bin’s GNA you know take a seat this game I think Alex neander played really well last game he’s going to be uh given a shot again obviously has more anell experience as well so I think this is exactly what we’re going to see tomorrow night minus mcabe who missed practice today just I think for maintenance he’s just dealing with something and it’s nice to see Dakota murmus back after jaw surgery so uh it looks like he’ll be returning soon as well I don’t know if he’ll stay with the Toronto Maple maybe he’ll go down to the Marley’s but uh I think this is really really close to what we’re going to see tomorrow night against the Florida Panthers yeah I’m loving it and I’m hoping they continue we were preaching that on our stream but let wrap it up let us know down below what your thoughts are and thank you again rsca for sponsoring this video a huge game tomorrow for the Toronto map pleas stay tuned for more videos because a lot of updates are going to go down thank you guys for watching see you later
