[Music] what’s going on welcome back to talking ball it’s Jack that’s JD and today we are looking ahead to the Duke vers Kansas matchup after a big road win for the dukies 6955 over Arizona and unfortunately I wasn’t able to record so JD uh quickly before we get to the Duke Kansas matchup let’s spend a couple minutes just going over Duke versus Arizona you watch the game live so just what were your overall takeaways from the matchup with the wild cats so I had I had two ways of looking at this game obviously the first one probably more so then the second one is we’re on the road it’s our first true Road game we’re playing against a top 25 team their crowd is completely in the game [Music] and uh Cooper flag not nearly his best game and still could control a lot of the tempo of the game even with some mistakes here and there he’s learning his way uh he did get some assistance but we can talk a little bit more about that um but overall Cooper flag Duke Road game big win big win for them after the Kentucky game and you know some disappointment there so that’s one way and the other way to look at it at times this game was very hard to watch it was sloppy by both teams uh they couldn’t uh the the flow of the game was just erratic and um it was a time frustrating because I kept thinking yes we’re up but are we going to about to lose this game or is it going to go the other way is the you know Caleb you know Caleb gonna just like turn into the Duke killer that he is and it didn’t happen it didn’t happen I I I think you know as you said earlier depending how you look at things right and so both teams are were are pretty good defensively I think Duke and Arizona and I think that’s part of the reason why offensively both team struggled I think Duke’s offense is a little bit better they had a little bit more weapons coming into the game and I think that showed in the matchup with Arizona uh to your point on Cooper he started off two for 10 from the field and he finished 10 for 22 so that you know it’s hard to question much about him and we’re five games into the season and you know I think it’s still early but I would say he’s certainly lived up to the hype and the one thing I want to say right now because I made a point earlier in one of our videos to say Khan kiple would lead us in scoring uh I was wrong that’s going to be Cooper flag uh there’s you know it could change right because we’ve noticed a theme where Cooper has been the clear leading scorer in the bigger game games but in the other games in the versus Maine and Army and Watford Cooper hasn’t really taken it upon himself to score and so I I you know that could be the angle where someone else is the leading scorer but I guess quickly uh because this you know we’re we’re supposed to be talking about the Kansas game as much as we can here just going over the the starting five Cooper we’ve talked about Khan kiple had a rough first half a really strong second half hit three three points pointers uh for nine points in the second half he also had a tough finish over I think it was cras uh for his first two points in the first half which could have been an and one um it seemed like they didn’t want to give cras his third foul in that situation um which is understandable I I I get where the refs are coming from uh tyres proor Al although you do question Arizona leaving him in at the end of the first half with three fouls we had two but that would have been his third I believe or maybe he did have three you may be right he had he was playing three fouls and like you’re sitting there going what are they doing right although they do have the two big guys so maybe they just felt like all right so no and and that very easily could have been his his fourth you’re right uh cuz he jumps across the lane he didn’t go straight up he jumped across the lane it was a really impressive finish by kiple he gets himself going he misses that shot in the second half gets his own own rebound then gets I think that was his first three and he gets two more at the end of the the second half which really gave Duke uh you know the the lead for good I mean they had the lead for good but kind of put the game away is a better way to put it Proctor great first half hit a couple of key threes had a nice uh bucket as well inside uh had like four assists second half not as strong however thought he played really good defense throughout the game Caleb Foster kind of the opposite uh felt like he started off slow didn’t love his first shot second shot was better still missed it um second half scored eight points but he also had some really shaky moments especially against the the press that Arizona brought on where it looked it looked really dicey I know that’s something that you had mentioned a few times um and lastly hold on lastly Before I Let You Go as we finish up the starters here is malow watch who had a really good first half he had all eight of his points he had the first bucket of the game he had a couple free throws he hit uh the corner three which was awesome then I I don’t know he picked up he got into foul trouble in the first half and then the second half he did pick up his third foul later on but I also wasn’t sure if he got hurt what what happened there um because he only played 16 minutes partially foul trouble partially also because as we’ll get to Malik Brown played pretty well but scoring wise I thought malow watch had a really good first half go ahead any points on the starters you want to get into um I thought K2 it maybe they Signs of Life here look the the the early games versus Kentucky game all of a sudden okay I’m up against a talented team he shrunk a little bit in the second half when poop had a shoulder so much of the load it was a very good sign when K2 hit those two threes in a row to really back us up and that that was awesome so I hope we can see that carrying forward but let me talk about the uh the the shock troops the second wave Malik Browns San James uh Mason Gillis so Malik as you said I I mean he wound up with the you know it Mal had 16 minutes the other 24 went to Malik and he had seven rebounds completely disruptive he he’s just really really good so he’s one of the three uh seon James 20 minutes six rebounds uh Brown by the way had seven rebounds they were great they were just you know it’s sort of like and I haven’t felt this way in a long time about a Duke team where those three guys coming in off the bench if the flow is going against us these three guys can stop it they can just stop it and that brings me to Mason Gillis who was not I don’t know tentative hesitant not really in the flow there I have a lot of faith in him I think maybe just an off game but for me having those three guys coming in it it it is just a whole um that look they came through the transfer portal they have a lot of experience but they come on the court and they can settle things down and I think that that is a weapon in the uh in the use of all three of them collectively same time okay let’s change the pace of the game let’s change it and I think they’re going to be very very important as we move on to Kansas agreed agreed and and the other thing um mik Brown um I want to mention is that his passing is really good when he comes in for malow watch the overall ball movement for the team seems to improve and then he found cion James on that that cut twice in the first half versus Arizona uh so much the play was so similar that for a minute when I was rewatching it I thought that I had already seen it before um but then I once Jay bilis yeah Jay bis made a point to say it’s was basically the same play I was like okay I feel a little bit better I’m not losing my mind here so yeah uh he’s he’s a really good passer he played really well in this game with Arizona so let’s Turn the Page let’s look ahead to this match up with Kansas uh which is a a very experienced team kind of similar to Kentucky in the sense that they’ve got you know two two fifth year guys um in Hunter Dickinson and Dean Harris they’ve got a few seniors and KJ Adams uh David Koy Jr Zeke Mayo all seniors juniors in AJ store and who am I forgetting Ryland Griffin the only the only uh freshman who really gets playing time for them um at least in their bigger matchups when they played Michigan State in North Carolina has been F Flor boua who just quickly I I just think it’s interesting he has a very similar history to malat he really only started playing basketball at like 14 uh I came over from Africa I forget which country I’m sure I hope someone will let me know uh but he’s he’s a little bit undersized as a center he’s 6’9 but he’s extremely athletic and very mobile and it’s this is a strange place to start on a Kansas breakdown their backup center but I just think it’s notable because this game in in Prior times when Hunter Dickinson has been in foul trouble especially last year when he’s had to come out or Miss games Kansas has kind of missed a step they don’t miss a step when boua comes into the game he he’s a he’s a much better Defender than Dickinson he he doesn’t provide the same on offense but he’s really athletic and mobile and has good energy so I think the next logical place to go would probably be Hunter Dickinson so what H how do you you know how have you seen Dickinson so far what questions do you have about Hunter and Dickinson so hunter likes to for me likes to get into a flow he you know he has a nice little Lefty jump Lefty sort of jump shot but nice Lefty release likes to get onto the basket likes to turn around and go to the basket for me the biggest thing will be Duke’s ability to disrupt him to dis disrupt his footwork cuz I actually like when Hunter is playing really well he he he’s moving his feet well and so between Mal and Malik they have to be able to play up on him and be able to make it difficult for Hunter to turn around and do his thing otherwise I don’t want to it’s not a foregone conclusion because we’ve seen Hunter not have good games and I certainly want this to be one of them but otherwise you know he’s going to put up 20 22 24 points and if he’s in his flow then I think the rest of the team is going to be playing well so Duke is going to have to do something very disruptive and and let’s face it we’re let’s talk about it a bit they’re rank one the new rankings just came out and have us at 11 11 right and yet some of the odds makers have us as the favorite in this game and it is we’ll get to that we’ll get to that more later we’ll get to that more later right now let’s just let’s focus on the Kansas roster and then I that’s an appropriate thing to to talk about at the end we’ll we’ll talk about more at the end because I think you’re on to something here but I want to come back to it later after we’ve you know stayed on track here we we’ll we’ll talk about the team and the thing so so take us through this the rest of the starting team so the thing that’s interesting uh on Dickinson as well uh for me similar to Cooper who has stepped up his scoring in the bigger matchups same thing has happened with Hunter Dickinson where on the season he’s averaging 18 and 10 against Michigan State and North Carolina he was at 24 and 11 and against North Carolina probably would have been more if he didn’t get into foul trouble in the first half um so I I completely agree that’s you know going to be the guy that Duke has to slow down he’s the key guy outside of him they have a a number of players who are averaging around eight and nine points but the only other guy in double figures has been Zeke mayo and I do think we’ll talk about it more later but you know between Milat and brown we do have Defenders who can give Dickenson a harder time and the key with him I think is just forcing him to shoot jump shots versus you know as you kind of corrected yourself not a jumper but his ability to shoot with his left hand around the rim that’s where he’s at his best but if you can make him shoot 18f Footers and threes you have a better chance he can still hit those shots but you have a better chance Zeke Mayo their second leing scorer comes in from South Dakota State 12 points three assists he had a really big game in the North Carolina game he led them in scoring with 21 um he’s a guy who this year he’s only shooting 31% from three but last year at South Dakota State shot 39% so he conern cly shoot better and then dwan Harris and KJ Adams are their two other uh returning players from last year who they’re they’re they know their games Dean Harris is a defensive guard who is also a playmaker he’s not a great scorer but he can make the timely buckets and then KJ Adams is not a three-point shooter he’s very athletic he’s like 67 230 he’s their power forward he has this ability to shoot like this like push shot you know from free throw line in which is very unique not a lot of players do that um he’s a solid Defender and then their last starter is Ryland Griffin transfer from Alabama who’s a really good three-point shooter he’s got good size round 66 uh solid Defender and then Off the Bench mentioned bnda their backup center AJ store transferred from Wisconsin averaged 17 points a game last year not the most efficient he is shooting 40% from three early on this year I don’t I think that might be a little bit high but his role is different so maybe as opposed to previous years he’s shooting a little bit better uh but he’s you know a key scorer for them he kind of splits minutes with Ryland Griffin who I think is their best three-point shooter and then lastly David koit uh it’s like a small 510 511 guard averaged like 20 plus points at Southern Illinois last year not asked to do that at at Kansas uh but has come in and done a lot of different things also shooting above 40% they’ve got a few guys who can definitely hit the three ball and they have a lot more depth than they did last year uh where they really they only had five guys and then they lost Kevin mcculler so they they had four and then H Dickinson was like in and out towards the end of the year so they they were kind of down to three so it’s a you know it’s a much different team for Kansas this year so I I want to stay with depth for a minute from the Duke perspective which is that um when Proctor isn’t showing up in the second half then Isaiah Evans Darren Harris especially if Mason Gillis seemed out of sorts there although his size does help but but we have have two other guards who can definitely add to um I I just don’t see why not give them a couple of minutes in the first half and then if you’re in trouble in the second half sub them in they know they’re not playing more than 10 minutes so I I think it’s you have an opportunity with this Duke team to go 10 Deep and they should be giving it because to your point many times and you’ve raised this many times that Duke goes with an 8man rotation it’s a the starting five and it’s clearly the second wave you know that the three of them come in but I was disappointed when I saw pieces of the team not doing what they are capable of doing and there are two more players on the bench okay I I hear what you’re saying I let’s let’s see I agree that Isaiah I felt like Isaiah Evans should have got an opportunity in the Arizona Game and I I think he should get an opportunity in this game I don’t think Proctor though is the guy who I would take the minutes from and I and I listen I said before he didn’t score the ball well in the second half but I do think he defended really well and I don’t think Isaiah Evans or Darren Harris would defend as well as Proctor and I think that’s really important so the minutes I think to get Evans into the game who I think listen we’re not getting to 10 okay it’s we got to hope for nine I think nine is about as far as we can get so if we’re gonna get to nine 10 it’s a 10 and if any of you have ever seen uh Varsity Blues you will know it’s a 10 well we’ll see if we got any uh listeners in your demographic here we’ll find out I guess uh but with that being said I think if you’re going to get the minutes the five to 10 minutes for Isaiah Evans in this game they’re coming from Foster who had 26 minutes scored in the second half but I I didn’t think played great and is not as good a Defender as Proctor or and or depending on how you want to slice it up Mason Gillis uh who didn’t look great but at the same time as saying that wait wait hold on hold on Mason only had seven minutes I know that we talk about so that he basically really played with seven guys and he didn’t look beyond the seven that’s you know saying here’s something that he could try and do because he’s got two other guys that can play so I I agree and I I also think kind of circling back to Mason Gillis part of the maybe part of the reason why he looked the way he did is because he knew he wasn’t going to get more than 10 minutes and I felt like he was kind of forcing the action whereas when he’s played for Purdue he’s always played like 20 25 minutes maybe 15 right so he’s had a little bit more time to get into the flow of the game um so to take so let me take you so to take down number one and this is a great early Ram mat I love that we have number one one Kansas number four Auburn and we’ve had Kentucky Arizona I really love the scheduling I do and I think it’s it it really puts him in h tournament type games early on but to take down Kansas number one tested twice Michigan State and um UNC what do you see as the keys to the game in order to have that happen for Duke to win the number one thing I’m looking for is the pace of the game because when you looked at when you look at Duke’s first two big games Kentucky Arizona certainly the Arizona game was played at a more methodical pace and the and the Kentucky game was almost a game of two halves where the first half was much more up and down Duke scored I don’t remember how many points they scored but it was it was a good amount versus the second half the offense kind of faltered but it wasn’t like you know Kentucky ran out and scored 50 it was you know much it was I think like 7773 was the final but majority of the points at least for Duke were scored in the first half um the game with and when you look at the games for Kansas the North Carolina game was up and down Kansas had like 53 points in the first half slowed down a little a little bit in the second half partially because North Carolina just kept getting to the the free throw line which got them back into the game and the Michigan State game which was close until the final eight minutes was much more methodical Michigan State’s defense was pretty good uh they ran two bigs out at all times to kind of slow down the middle um and force they they it just was a little bit more they’re better more defensively sound team and I think Duke is more in terms of in line of how they’re going to play are they closer to Michigan State or North Carolina I think they’re closer to a Michigan State the way Duke’s defense has been throughout this year has been really good overall um and I think that that’s going to give Kansas some issues having said that I think Kansas’s offense is better right now than Duke’s offense so I think that’s going to be where this game is decided when can Kansas has the ball more so than when Duke has the ball if that makes sense all right so Cooper flag who you know that so far as Cooper goes so goes Duke um who guards Cooper yeah it’s it’s interesting uh because when we were looking at the the Arizona game I thought KJ Lewis was the best guy to guard Cooper but I felt like when Trey Townsen was on the Court it’d be tough for Arizona to do so cuz who would towns in guard and in this matchup I think it’s you don’t have quite that same question I think it’s going to be KJ Adams they’ll mix in different guys uh but KJ Adams is 67 230 235 he’s a great athlete um he’s definitely the guy I think Cooper will have to guard and on the flip side I think that’s who Cooper guards and it’ll be interesting because KJ is really good at moving without the ball but he’s not a threat from the three-point line which I think will allow Cooper a little bit more ability to roam defensively but he’s got to be careful because KJ Adams is very good at finding the small Pockets around the basket to either get his little push shot in or get a layup or an alleyoop dunk so I think that is going to be a great match up to watch flag versus Adams um one other thing that I’m gonna look for is um since almost everybody maybe not Malik Brown but almost everybody shoots the three for Duke I would love to see at least let’s see the col 30 attempts would be a lot it would be a good number like yeah I would like to see it on the high side with a good with a good percentage for us you know in the upper 40% range I’d like to put a lot of pressure on them from three-point range bringing uh that would be something that I would look for in this game and that’s going to you know that’s a good point to bring up because one of the questions I have heading into this one is can Khan and Mr Foster kind of build off of their second halfs where they scored nine and eight points respectively have a little bit more confidence coming into this game with Kansas and and knock down some threes because I agree that’s going to be a very important factor in this matchup with Kansas and just quickly I was curious when you said that uh Duke attempted 25 threes against Arizona and that game wasn’t I think this game’s going to be played at a faster pace so I think 30 is a good number so the and and how many did they hit cuz they were off they were averaging in the 80s and they won the game with 696 6 69 points and so you know they their offense wasn’t that they they could not have hit a high percentage of Threes that’s why I’d like to see them take more and hopefully um get find that sweet spot where they’re going to hit 40 something per from the field yeah nine of 25 against the Wildcats uh let’s see the only other the only other thing I want to bring up before we get into our like closing remarks and I’ll we’ll go back to the odds really quickly is that uh Kansas does certainly have the experience Edge but I think now that Duke has played a couple of these games playing Kentucky who is about as old of a team as you’re going to see in college basketball and then going on the road and playing at Arizona Tyrese Proctor mentioned in the postgame PR press conference that in during halftime the Kentucky game was something they brought up in terms of how they make adjustments and so now they’ve got two of these games under their belt I think that’s going to help a young Duke team who runs out three freshman in their starting lineup against a very experienced Jayhawks team that we’ll see how how the pieces fit together for Kansas on the defensive end of the court and I’ll get into that a little bit more as we go through the odds what were you saying about the odds before JD so I I I was saying it’s very interesting that a 11 seed playing in a neutral court against the number one team that has not lost yet is somehow um the favorite for not cap you know uh not everyone has them as the favorite but surprisingly a number of the better odds makers do have them as the favorite in the game not by a lot but do have them as the favor and I thought that was very surprising to me I would have thought they would have been you know three to five point dogs or something I was hoping they would be three to five point Ducks but I personally and the reason why I was hoping is cuz I thought Duke should be a slight favorite in this game and I’ll tell you the reason why there’s two two reasons I think Duke between malawat and Malik Brown they have the Defenders to make life difficult for Hunter Dickinson and then Additionally the thing I’ve noticed although Kansas’s defense statistically is pretty good I think Duke’s defense is much more cohesive outside of the wford game where it’s technically it was their best defensive per performance but both you and I agreed we gave up a lot of open threes I feel like their switching their cohesiveness Dukes that is on defense has been really good and what I noticed with Kansas in the matchups versus North Carolina and Michigan State was while their individual defense is pretty good across the board they they don’t necessarily have a lot of defensive Playmakers like boua is a good shot blocker Hunter Dickson is averaging two block and two steals but he’s not he’s not a great defender he’s pretty much an average maybe below average Defender dwan Harris is probably their best perimeter Defender uh Mayo can guard Ryland Griffin can guard the point I’m getting to though is that as a team they there seems to be a lot of times where there’s lapses miscommunications two guys go to one um if somebody gets beat the switches aren’t great so and they they fouled a ton especially against North Carolina so I think that’s where Duke can look to take advantage the one thing I will admit though is North Carolina’s speed gave Kansas a lot of issues Duke doesn’t necessarily have that with their roster but I do think Duke’s defense is going to be the key to winning this game uh versus Kansas as you said neutral sight game in Las Vegas of all places uh tomorrow night Tuesday night at 9:00 so it should be a lot of fun another as you said another great early test for the dukies against a really good Kansas jhawk team any other thoughts JD before we uh wrap this up Duke of the NBA a little shout out to Jared McCain absolutely I know that people are gonna say Paul George is injured Maxi is injured you know and be is injured that doesn’t mean that a rookie is going to step up in the NBA just because their other guys are injured I mean we thought McCain we love McCain at Duke he was fun but that doesn’t mean he’s going to start putting up the numbers he’s putting up he’s getting an opportunity to play and he’s clearly making the most out of it and I want to give a big shout out to him he was he’s a fun player um he is brings a lot of joy and excitement to the game when he’s in I mean there aren’t too many players in the NBA that paint their fingernails but nonetheless it’s a lot of fun and I’m really happy to see him having that kind of um impact as a rookie I don’t know why why you had to even bring up the fingernails I think that you know they look great he’s doing he’s you know anytime you’re scoring like this you do whatever you want as far as I’m concerned uh not Duke in the NBA but you made me think of this quick shout out to Duke on another college team Mr jayen Blakes has been awesome for Stanford uh we will see him later in the year in six games for the Cardinal 14 points five assists three rebounds two steals per game love jayen Blakes really happy for that guy glad he’s getting an opportunity he wouldn’t have got the same opportunity certainly at Duke so really happy for Mr Blakes if you’re a Duke fan if you’re a basketball fan subscribe to the channel like this video leave a comment below share with a friend we’ll see you guys next time peace
