Shane Wright makes a difference when he returns to the lineup against the Anaheim Ducks Andre burakovsky also gets his first goal in 26 games let’s talk about it you are locked on Kraken your daily podcast on the Seattle Kraken part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hey hey what do you say Seattle hockey fans welcome to another episode of Locked on Kraken part of the locked on podcast Network we bring you your favorite team every single day my name is Erica Lala I am your host of lockon Kraken also a contributor over at CBS Sports covering women’s basketball at all levels as a writer and an onair analyst before we get into today’s exciting show I want to let you know today’s episode of lock on Kraken brought to you by our friends at indeed still searching for a great candidate for your company don’t search just match with indeed and yes indeed I’ve got the the Uma hat back on got my uh Pirates Booty right here and uh once again for for Andre and for Brandon it was in weight game so we didn’t get to hear the goal horn but gonna play it for the fellas on lockon Kraken um still I think there’s still more that the Seattle Kraken team can do they actually fell behind to the Anaheim Ducks a team that again on paper at least we should be able to beat but overcame some adversity I really liked what Ian and Allison were talking about on the postgame show last night um you know that this was a different kind of win things could have really gone South after um you know that hit on Leo Carlson by Tai Kier lots of uh disagreements on how egregious the hit may have been the arm went up after Leo’s after Leo hit the ice and maybe a little reactionary all we can say is this like Allison and Ian did of course we wish the best for Leo Carlson he did not return in yesterday’s game so you know hopefully it’s nothing too serious um and we’ll talk about maybe some of the um longer term repercussions so to speak as far as um maybe a bad taste left in the mouth a little bit later on today’s show off the schneide though it the last time Andre burkovski scored was 26 games ago he is tied for his longest goal goalis streak in his career um last April was the last time he scored but he was an impactful player in this game and I I think for Andre burakovsky we’ve talked about him and he’s opened up about maybe the confidence um not being where he wanted it to be I think he’s alluded to I think perhaps Dan BMA has alluded to that he hasn’t been exactly on uh on the the line uh or in in the lineup where he wanted to be but he gets a goal and it’s a goal it wasn’t the first goal Shane’s was but we’re gonna break down Shane’s goal oh chef’s kiss I have a lot to say about that so we’re gonna do that in the second stanza I want to just focus on Andre burkovski um and this is something that Alice and liuan talked about a little bit more in depth regarding response goals but in her postgame analysis she writes that burakovsky and montour’s goals came within the opening 70 seconds of the third period and um I mean the fact that the Seattle Kraken really came out just guns blazing in that third period I think I said they they fell behind they took the lead actually they had the opening goal that was from Shane righ and then they they they lost the lead but they were able to regain it the burkovsky Montour goal goals excuse me were 24 seconds apart make uh marking the sixth time this season that the Kraken have scored an ownown response goal and again that’s something that allice and liuan and Ian Fess talked about a lot on the postgame show I really enjoyed their breakdown of ownown response goals and it’s something that if the Seattle Kraken or when the Seattle Kraken start to really get serious about just mucking it up playing with a little more sandpaper they’re going to need to do a little bit more of that once again a quality start for Joey dord he pushed aside 20 of his 22 shots faced and um 23 of 26 uh on the Anaheim side the power play still a problem and what’s also a problem is not only is the power play not generating but also giving opportunity short-handed to other teams so we’ve got to fix that we did for the most part stay out of the box only one p power play opportunity for Anaheim now again it’s not that there weren’t penalties but offsetting at times um shot attempts though on the power play 10 shots on goal four shot attempts for Anaheim on their one power play four shot attempts uh two shots were on goal the shot quality three on the power play for the Seattle Kraken so again got to work on that seven for the Anaheim Ducks um Puck battle win now this is I don’t like this number uh 75% for the ducks come Wednesday we’re gonna have to fix that um puck in the offensive zone though 45% for the Seattle Kraken um High danger chances five for each side um so the shock quality there was better shock quality overall for the Ducks uh better Puck battle wins for the Ducks but the Seattle Kraken come up with the goal uh or excuse me with the win and I think that especially the Shane Wright goal for me it it’s more of what we need to see from the Seattle Kraken a few more nuggets from Allison liuan um you know the Kraken earned this win by generating 59.8% of all shot attempts in five on five play and a resulting 56.5% of all shot quality um this marked the seventh straight game in which the Kraken have allowed two goals or less that seems to be the magic number Joy dord does a lot for us so if it gets a little out of hand not necessarily because of him um that’s when we run into some problems I mentioned Joy Dax another quality start this was actually his uh his 11th quality start of the Season stopping 0.9 more goals than expected um based on the quality he faced uh but again uh that’s just a breakdown I wanted to go over some numbers because I do think this was a really good outing for the Seattle Kraken but it was an important outing and an important goal for Andre barovsky let’s hear what he had to say post game it’s been a while it’s been a lot of games uh hasn’t come easy so um definitely definitely nice to see it going not maybe not the prettiest one I’ve scored in my life but uh it all count I’ve been talking to some of the coaches has been telling me to just just go to that might bounce off you in and today did uh just trying to go there a little bit more find find those areas where maybe you can get like a like a dirty one instead of trying to find that perfect shot opportunity every time um so yeah you’ve had a few line mates this year what’s it like it’s really nice I enjoy it a lot um I think we we’ve been creating a lot together in this games that we’ve been playing together um I mean these two guys we a lot of speed just like I I wanted to be uh playing a fast game and support each other and those are two guys that can uh really create space for themsel and for me and taner obviously like you know he’s has an amazing shot so trying to feed him as much as possible and and same with Maddie trying to give him the puck he’s very good at skating up the puck in the and enter the zone and pull up and make plays so um it’s um they make it easy for me too just uh we felt like uh we felt like this was a statement game we need a win and we talked about it before the game we we we need to come out and play as a as a group uh I think the last couple games hasn’t been maybe our best so that was something we talked about uh do it right from the start um obviously the game you know always going to be up in game you sometimes you have to chase a little bit and today I think we we just really stepped up in thir we we talked about before the Period start that we we’re all got to be better and just ramp it up couple couple levels and and just play a maybe a little bit more simple game not trying to force Stu and trying to stick count of through guys just play Simple North and get it back and grind him down there and I think we did so it was good a good comeback indeed but again even just looking at allice and lukan’s post game analytics um and an analysis uh there were some weak areas for the Seattle Kraken team and I want to talk about that a little bit on tomorrow’s episode Wednesday’s episode also apologies uh for a late episode today I just had a um a a matter that needed some attention so that that took me away from today’s episode but tomorrow on our game Day episode with Zan beg who will join us because of the Thanksgiving holiday on Wednesday instead of Thursday we’re going to break down some of the things um that still need work and so yes playing simple getting to the net all of those things are important um but or and I should say the Seattle Kraken cannot get complacent because the games the complete game is is far from there in my estimation for the Seattle Kraken but we’ll talk about that later this week um coming up on today’s episode I want to break down the Shane ride goal I I know I said round two at CPA on the side if you’re watching on YouTube but I’m just going to be honest I’m so fired up about this play that we’re probably gonna talk about it for the rest of the episode today’s episode of lock on Kraken as I mention at the top of the show brought to you by our friends at indeed we’re driven for the search for better like a better power Erica Lala here your host of lockon Kraken and uh again we’ve got the Uma hat this is the hat that we bring out when we get a win and that’s exactly what the Seattle Kraken did they get a win and you know we’re excited for them and what was even more special I honestly I will say this I don’t know if you agree with me I think getting Shane right into the right mindset no pun intended that time getting Shane Wright into the right mindset is for me more exciting than Andre bov’s goal now that being said I’m very excited that both happen I I want both I’m just saying I think especially we’re going to break this one down especially how it went down there’s so much I I love this place so much and this sequence so much that I have petitioned to have Alison liuan break this down on the Kraken film room that’s how much I am obsessed with how this goal was scored and I’m gonna talk about his goal but the Brandon mour Slammer just absolute missile of a shot who wins the face off who wins the face off and he did Shane Wright that is did on the face off exactly what I’m about to break down in this play but uh you know before you hear from me I want you to hear from from Shane himself young guy had uh some healthy scratches and I do think he made the most of it I waxed poetic on the ways that I think Shane Wright can improve uh and how he can impact the game and he did that and more quite honestly here’s what Shane had to say after the game I think just uh you know playing with some energy uh you know playing fast winning Puck and um hold on to a little bit and making plays and um yeah you know solid defensively as well I feel like um you know played pretty well on my own as well and um always nice to chip in on offensively for sure you obviously been working on your faceoffs I know in practice and uh that one paid off for you tonight yeah yeah I think it’s uh it’s a big uh it’s a big aspect of the game especially for a centerman you know be to to be a good you know solid guy on draws um and yeah I think it’s just about reps and and and learning you know what it’s like to take draws against these these you know talented uh you know strong centerman and um yeah definitely uh you know some work on a lot was there I think just kind of realized know I have a little more time with the puck than I think I do um just just being able to hold on to those pucks a little bit more um rather than kind of throwing it away or or uh you know making a play as someone else just you know holding on to it skating it um and uh you know trying to make a play with it from there we knew we were playing well we knew we had uh you know a number of good you know scoring chances and um I think it was a matter of time before we um kind of took it to the next level took the next step in then in our game there tonight but um yeah know happy with with how it went overall and you know nice to to come back there for sure they have a lot of guys who can you know make us pay if we we give them too much time in space so uh being able to to close close their time in space um and really make it hard on their forwards um is you know important moving forward against them oh Shane you know I my my darling sweet prince I um grow fond of Shane Wright human Shane Wright the hockey player day after day um the maturity I talked about this a lot in the offseason I talked about this a lot leading up to training camp the maturity has been impressive you know Shane Wright was in a lot of conversations going forth instead of first then being with the Seattle Kraken early in his career only to be a healthy scratch um you know he got injured ahead of the cter cup final last year the perseverance I love it from Shane I love it and he made an impact the Seattle Kraken against Anaheim on Tuesday night 59.6% from the dot if you look at of those who took faceoffs Chandler Stevenson 70% bers 54.5% uh Jaden Schwarz 100% you know he doesn’t take face offs very often uh Yanni gourd at uh 50% Shane Wright 62.5% so he had the third highest phase-off percentage in this game you heard him in that clip talk about faceoffs and the faceoff win to set up that Montour goal oh my goodness not only does he get to the puck first first but he also uses his body look at the clip again he uses his body I love I love when athletes use their body as basically a shield in in defense it’s it’s one of my favorite things he uses his body to stop the forward motion and give Montour the opportunity to win that um or to I should say Corral to control that Puck and and he did not waste any time um great goal by Brandon Montour first time in his career per Allison lukan’s postgame analysis that uh Brandon mour has scored in three straight games uh this streak matches the longest goal Streak by a kraken defenseman held by Vince Dunn three games played in 2223 and in 2324 Brandon Montour as advertised Brandon onour great addition for the Seattle Kraken um Shane Wright well done young lad well done I hoped for this I now hope that it lasts if Shane Wright can be a part of the consistency for this team I will be thrilled and I think he can do it I think that he is up to the task and he and his line were were the most effective in tilting the ice the Shane Wright Trio with Oliver bu stren and Ellie tolvanen on the flanks were a plus eight in shot attempts and created 84.3% of all shot quality boom Wright had a goal and an assist in the game the last time he played at Honda Center April 5th 2024 he also had a multi-point game two one and three two goals one assists three points including the game-winning goal ah ah it’s almost as though the Kraken maybe knew what they were doing also Shane Wright he mentioned what the assets are for this Anaheim team they’re young Scrappy and hungry he’s playing with contemporaries I mean not completely through the lineup but it’s a young team and that’s something that Dan bosma talked about it’s a young team we know where they are in the standings and again they’re young they’re Scrappy they’re hungry I think this was the perfect team for Shane Wright to go up against all things considered I think he had a great game and again the data shows that but coming up on lockd on Kraken I am going to do my I’m not I’m not trying to be Alice and liuan here um I because I can’t there is it’s one of one there’s only one Alice and Lucan I do however want to break down this goal for you because so many of the things that I talk about that make good athletes that the Seattle Kraken need to do I saw personally in the sequence that led to Shane Wright’s goal I have three snapshots because I do not have rights to show you the NFL film and I’m not gonna jeopardize the channel uh in any way but you can look at Alice and lukans I’ll put it in the show notes uh you can look at the full clip I I have three snapshots that I think perfectly encapsulate why the the right line was successful why that goal came to be came to fruition and why that is exactly what we need to see from the Seattle Kraken on the power play as a matter of fact I think one of the comments to Alice and liuan posting the clip where I get these screen grabs from was this is what Seattle Kraken should do on the power play and I do not disagree that’s coming up on locked on Kraken today’s episode of Locked on Kraken brought to you by attempts now some of them were on the L on uh were on the ice uh for what was it the first or second duck skull that I really didn’t like I’m not I’m not talking about that maybe I’ll break it down tomorrow um again not a perfect game and there’s some things I want to talk about we’ll do that tomorrow on Wednesday’s Game Day episode with Zan beg but good googly moogly I don’t know if you haven’t seen this goal in slow motion as a short clip please please please please I’m G to put the link in the show notes go watch because chef’s kiss there’s so much that I liked about this goal so much that I liked about this goal I’m going to break this down in uh three different snapshots the first is just so you can see on the screen for those watching I will narrate for those on audio we closest to the screen of course have the goalie this is an overhead shot behind the goal tender and the the white jerseys that you see on your left hand side so it’s the left side of the goalie glove side of the goalie that would be the right side coming down streaking for the Seattle Kraken offense so just um outside of the hash marks but inside that Circle that is Ellie tolvanen the person that you see immediately in front of the goal tender for the Seattle Kraken that is Oliver buor Strand and above Oliver buor strand is Shane Wright and it’s rer Evans the puck is actually coming in rker Evans is shooting this Puck he’s shooting it kind of as if he’s aiming for the glove side of the goal tender and Shane Wright and Oliver buor strand are both being held up on their on their right side and as this shot comes in if you watch the video you see both of them almost in unison turn toward their left they they pivot to uh you know use their left and pivot and turn towards the net now this shot ends up hitting bodies I think it hits a player on on the Ducks team so this Puck doesn’t get all the way through but as you can also see in this Frame the gender is having to look Beyond he’s being screened by his own players and again the cracken curl in not out towards the boards but they turn they curl in towards the center of the ice almost in unison and again rer Evans shooting into that space I love this because what I see in this what I see is a team that is committed to um you know they are are committed to getting bodies in front I also love that Ellie tolvanen is there in support getting the def the the deactive shooting that getting shots towards the net but the curl in almost in unison I just really love that the second sequence whoop the second sequence that I’m going to show you or excuse me I should have showed you this one first I thought I had a different screenshot this is actually right before the sequence that I showed you this is rer Evans um about to shoot the puck and you can see the Stagger here uh by the two Seattle players and again you see bork strand low uh that is um Shane Wright High then what they do is after this shot so they are curling in this shot gets tangled up stick side to the right of the Nets and Oliver buor strand picks it up and then he is gonna take he takes um rer Evans spot and then what happens is Shane Wright takes Oliver bu strand spot so he comes lower and what Ellie tolvanen does is he cuts through and Cycles back almost to where he was going but by cutting through the middle of the ice he pulls some of the D with him so by the time the next shot comes in you see up high just within the blue line that is Oliver buor Strand and as Oliver buor strand is shooting this puck very similar to how rker Evans shot going towards the middle you can see that now Adam Larson takes the spot that Ellie tolven and had so everyone’s shifting around they’re replacing each other we talked a few let me let me come back on talked a few episodes ago about the weave I know it from basketball but it it’s prev in other sports where you take up the space that your teammate just took up that’s what’s happening on this play that’s what’s happening on this play and this screenshot right here the reason that you see the Ducks player his stick is actually pointing toward the right boards and he’s on his right leg his left leg is not making contact with the ice that’s because as Oliver buor strand shoots the puck Shane Wright shoves the Ducks player he times the push the shove so that as the shots coming in he’s off kilter and this Puck is gonna find Shane Wright on his right hand side and he backhand it him now what I love about this is that again Adam Larson is also coming to the net because he knows they are two skaters that are above him it’s Evans and tolvanen and he knows that he can support Shane Wright either as if Shane wanted to backhand that toward the middle kind of like what we saw Chandler Stevenson do to set up uh what was that Daniel sprong the other day um he can do that if it’s a rebound a Ricochet then they can cycle in the zone in the offensive zone again I freaking love I freaking love this play I Love It I hope I explained it properly because I just this is exactly what needs to happen on the power play I love that there were multiple players stacked I love that when the shot goes in the players scramble to win the puck back and then they all switch they’re just you know it’s like tag you’re you know it’s like a relay race Shane dropped down Oliver took Riker spot rer slides over uh Ellie tolvanen slides down and Larsen now becomes uh the the the other skater there as as a release valve if Shane Wright needed it if the puck bounced to the other side to the left side of the goalie this more of this please more of that more we need so much more of that and again Shane Wright being strong on the ice knowing when to use his physicality if you look at that play it’s a quick shove a quick shove and he goes up and out because he was being handcuffed the the ducks in the first shot you see that they do a pretty good job tying up sticks and Shane Wright he’s kind of messing a little bit with the the defenseman earlier right before the shot comes in and then he holds off and just as that shot comes in from Oliver Boren quick shove gets his stick down now he’s strong on his stick so that he can’t be beaten he has the upper hand so to speak and he finds the puck backhands it oh my goodness I love that play so much I do hope I hello I hope Alison liuan does break it down on Kraken film session or a film room but if she doesn’t you heard it here first on lockon Kraken tomorrow’s episode we’re going to be joined by Zan beg it’s going to be a game Day episode the Seattle Kraken will be taking on the Anaheim Ducks the Leo Carlson hit it did create a little bit of tension but again Ian and Allison talked about it great response great response by Tai Kier knowing when to initiate when not to Jared mccan you know has some Choice words at times I do think it’s going to get physical in theory um the physicality might be in the kraken’s favor I don’t necessarily mean by the officiating although some argue sometimes you get better whistles at home but the energy of the crowd is definitely going to be on their side and sometimes you know when you get those cheers for mucking it up a little maybe you’re more inclined to do that I think it’s going to be interesting to see what carryover if any there is and the Seattle Kraken they need to continue to refine things but my golly G whiz if they can find more Synergy like we saw from the right line sky the limit so Yanni gour centering his fourth line quote unquote fourth line Shane Wright centering his line those two lines seem most promising at least with consistency I shouldn’t say consistency yet with Shane Wright because we don’t know we do know that Ben Meers was reassigned to Coachella Valley so we’re expecting to see Shane and after he after the game he had on Tuesday night I don’t even blame Dan bosma at all here’s hoping it lasts and that we see oh so much more from Shane Wright and the rest of this Kraken Crew That’s our show again thank you for your patience this went out late uh just had a few things I needed to handle everything’s fine so no no need to be alarmed it was just one of those days where uh there were just some urgent matters that needed to be handled but we will be back with Zan beg and we’re gonna preview the game at climate pledge Arena and I do plan to have a little something for you on Thursday the Kansas City Maverick are in town uh tomorrow Wednesday here in Tulsa so Thursday I’ll spend that episode talking about the casc Mavericks until then be kind to yourselves be kind to one another hold fast stay true and let’s go Kraken I’ll catch you on the next episode peace out everybody
