The show begins with an analysis of the intense showdown between the Boston Celtics and Minnesota Timberwolves, which came down to the wire. Tim and Adam dissect the game’s pivotal moments and highlight what made this matchup so compelling.

They then dive deeper into the Celtics’ impressive five-game winning streak, exploring what’s clicking for the team early in the season. With Boston playing at such a high level, the analysts ask: Are there any real competitors for the championship when the Celtics are firing on all cylinders?

Next, they shift focus to the Miami Heat vs. Dallas Mavericks overtime game. Tim and Adam discuss how each team performed in this tightly contested matchup and what it means for their respective seasons.

Finally, the conversation turns to the LA Clippers, who continue to find ways to win despite the absence of Kawhi Leonard. The guys explore how the Clippers are maintaining their success, the key contributors stepping up, and what the team’s strategy should be moving forward.

[Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] what is up everybody and welcome to the all NBA show powered by FanDuel America’s number one sports book get started with 150 in bonus bets if you win your first $5 bet at fanduel.com all NBA I’m your host Adam mes I’m joined by my esteemed colleague the very sad sad downtrod in Tim legler how are you doing on this Monday there’s one there’s one Saving Grace from yesterday Adam it is that be and I was I was this was a game I I almost never missed Cowboys coming in to play the commanders but it happened to be my son’s third birthday yeah so it kind of obviously prevented me from going he’s not quite old enough to take him that would have been a nice birthday present but he’s not quite old enough to go so I didn’t go and I am so grateful I didn’t go to that Stadium yeah to witness that that all that went on they were to to play that poorly for three quarters and then to give everybody hope by coming back 87 yard touchdown pass to McLaren you know with inside 30 seconds to go in the game all you got to do is make the extra point go to overtime and win the game and we miss it right so so look the range of emotions just sitting at home were too much for me I couldn’t imagine if I had to drive seven hours round trip and then sit there in the stadium through that so I’m grateful that would been a no music no podcast nothing just quiet in the car a man with his thoughts we know how that goes it’s honestly worse legs like you got blown out your commanders got blown out and lost a nailbiter in the same game you know so you kind of got both of the worst of them uh but that’s enough football talk we always do a little on on on Mondays on this show just usually just to rib uh legs and his commanders but on today’s show we are GNA talk about the Heat and Mavs ending Mavs keep losing these close ones the Heat I’m curious what leg’s thoughts are on the heat and just where they stand are they an interesting team to him we’re also going to talk about the Clippers five in a row one of the best records in the NBA just flying under the radar how are they doing it they had some very interesting comments in their postgame commentary after their most recent win over the 76ers but we’re gonna start with the Celtics beating the wolves in a nailbiter a game that came down to the last second literally the last second in fact I think it uh Nas Reed had a chance to win the game a three-pointer but at the top of the key I don’t know if he even got it off in time it was going to be a split second thing you review it but he missed it anyway it was a really interesting game for a lot of reasons legs what stood out to you though most in this one well a bunch of things I think first of all um the way that Jaylen Brown started the game let’s start with that yep cause has any player ever literally ever in the history of this league had a faster start than Jaylen Brown did in this game guy made five threes in a row to start the game he had the Celtics first 15 points he’s five for five for the three and I think let’s see that was all in three minutes and 34 seconds of playing time Jaylen Brown was five for five from the three and had a 156 lead over Minnesota so I’ve never personally and I don’t know I didn’t see any data on this during the game I haven’t read about any today did you see any data has anybody has anybody ever scored more points in the first three and a half minutes of a game in history man I don’t know that’s a that’s an interesting one I I mean it was every possession find that out I probably should have put some put some uh little research into that myself be but I was still in mourning over my commander so I didn’t really wasn’t in the mindset to dig through numbers this morning but I I mean you know can you imagine a guy having more than 15 points at three and a half minutes to start a game and it was might it might have been in five possessions I I’d have to go back and look but it it was all in a row so it wasn’t like it was you know the team was struggling he just just was scoring on every play uh I’m looking at it right now it looks like uh it looks like Drew holiday and Al Horford are the only other two guys that took shots in that stretch they both missed okay so five out of seven possessions you get 15 points that’s pretty good just insane I mean the guy came out cooking you know he got one going on his first first trip you know guys like that especially in in this league now where all these high-scoring Wings you know if you come out and make one on your first trip your first shot of the game you pretty much are given now free license to shoot that shot all night as money as you want and anyway so that’s the first impression like I just I don’t know the the data on this we know guys have scored you know that many points in stretches of the game before right I mean Trac McGrady scored 13 in like 34 seconds or something one time so we know stuff like that’s happened but I’m talking about right out of the gate as a player scored 15 points on shots in the first three and a half minutes of game I’m going to go out there and say no nobody’s ever done that before so that’s how the game started and then it was you know Minnesota came back early in the game but then Boston established control they had a double- digit lead most of the game and then Minnesota hung in there to their credit man they kept defending I thought Boston’s offensive uh shot selection which is their one Achilles heel that this team has they will let you back in the game because they will just not stop shoo shooting Threes And if you string together three or four misses you know you got a chance against them now look obviously there’s lots of knights they make their share of those during that same stretch and you you’re you know the game’s over but it’s the one glimmer of hope you have is if they take the quick ones and they continue to take the quick ones at some point if you’re just within arms length they’re going to miss a few and give you a chance to get back in the game and even the way Boston tried to like end the game I talked about Jaylen Brown starting to game that way Adam well that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go to a step back 30-footer up to when you know one basket ices the game and that set up Minnesota for the last possession of the game and whether na got that off in time or not I’m not even sure what they ended up deciding it didn’t matter because it didn’t go in but you know and I’m gonna get into that last possession more in a second but Boston to again they let him back in it even on that last possession a very difficult shot out of Jaylen Brown they milk as much clock as they can and you go to a back 30-footer legitimately misses it gives Minnesota an opportunity at the end of the game try to run a play to win the game so I give Minnesota credit for hanging in there man because Boston hit played well Boston played hard they competed defensively and I thought Minnesota really showed some toughness in this game yeah but I don’t know that either team was very smart in the way that they closed the game yeah and it was interesting the play I think you’re referring to down the stretch because there were some shots down the stretch for Boston that you didn’t love but the very last one there’s a difference between game clock and shot clock so you know Minnesota’s going to get the ball back you’re up two and I believe what happens if if it’s the exact same play I’m thinking about Jaylen Brown they run the guard to guard screen action both kind of Anthony Edwards is on Jaylen Brown he gets switched off and they both kind of go towards Jaylen Brown and Drew holidays wide open at the top of the key for a short window it had to been a quick swing which is what they always do by the way guard to guard action action if you put two on ball they swing it quick and that’s a quick three he didn’t do it there and I thought it was an obvious moment to swing the ball to him and he didn’t do it and I remember thinking to myself are you just trying to run a little bit extra clock that would make sense don’t give Minnesota as much time as you can or was that just a little bit more of a I got this moment and that’s big my always been my question with the Celtics was that system that they run is easier to do early in a game and it’s easier to do when you’re up a little bit harder late so I just I took note of that because he takes a shot and misses it and obviously the game goes how it goes but is that what you’re talking about like that specific play and a few plays like that in the clutch where what makes them good kind of went away went more towards all right let me just make a play to close this thing yeah to me that’s exactly what it was and it was like going for the kill shot you know at the end of the game and they run that action and obviously look you got I guess it was about maybe a seven8 second difference something like that yeah um Julius R got a layup to cut it to two and then Boston gets the ball they call timeout so they they’ve got this opportunity now it’s about I think it was seven eight seconds difference in the shot clock all right so that’s not to me that’s not that’s leaving Minnesota to much time to say we’re going to run this thing all the way down and take a shot that’s way too much time for Minnesota to have left you know if that’s 27 seconds is all that’s left in the game after the Randall layup and you can run that thing all the way down take a shot even when the ball traveling in the air hits the rim comes off if Minnesota secures it they’ve probably got less than two seconds that’s different you kind of go okay that’s smart you don’t want to shoot too early in that case but when you got a seven eight second shot clock difference it seems to me that you just want to get a quality look and jayen brown ends up with Rudy gar on him in that possession on the right wing you got one shooter in the corner Drew Halliday at the top of the key you know both of those guys kind of stayed home and I get jayen brown can you know get that off against Rudy goar he hit him with like a little crossover and then big brao jump backwards to separate and Rudy G is not gonna be quick enough to stay with that but he’s still 73 or whatever he is he he reached out got a hand up and it to me it’s just such a bad way to try to decide the game and you gave Minnesota a lot of time now it’s interesting there Adam by the way the ball comes off Dante D stenzo runs down the loose ball he starts heading up the floor it looks like to me they’ve got a pretty good spacing situation in transition so that’s a tough gray area there for a head coach oh sometimes you know you already made up in your mind you’re going to call time out or not and you tell your team that sometimes you kind of look at it what it looks like really quick that’s a split second decision I thought they had something pretty good going up the floor there was nobody in front of Diva chenzo probably all the way to half court and now maybe Boston gets in scramble mode they miscommunicate who’s stopping the ball maybe you get something quicker they call timeout after d venzo I thought it was after he was already dribbled so I was like oh man they’re gonna take this thing all the way in the back court they did give it to him before the dribble so you get it at half court get into Anthony Edwards I don’t like the way his decision either he drives on Jaylen Brown he had a angle on him to jump into his chest at the rim and get fouled he elected to kick it out ball gets swung around and nazre misses that deep three at the buzzer I thought Anthony Edward should have taken that ball into Jaylen Brown’s chest he had a half a step on him you gotta you as as a score in this league you got to jump and force somebody to make a call at The Rim I don’t like the fact that he kicked that out to the corner and it comes back around NZ re and you run out of time um so I didn’t like the way Boston closed the game I didn’t like Minnesota’s last possession really either uh and ultimately the Celtics win the game and I thought for the most part Boston outplayed that yeah yeah I would agree with that if we go to the other side I’m kind of interested here on a couple things there were three big Celtics runs in this game one was at the very start Jaylen Brown catches fire he and he crushes and then you had two other ones that coincided with Minnesota’s starting lineup and now Minnesota’s starting lineup gave up big runs and made big runs so you look at the end of it they were only a minus like 10 or something like that in those minutes which isn’t horrible going up against the Celtics they have obviously arguably the best starting five in basketball even without porzingis we’ll talk about him later but the I still take note of the big runs open up and you just mentioned if Boston doesn’t score you know then you can make a run on them but the converse is true too and and with Minnesota I would just struggle with their starting lineup no Mike connley today so you put dvan chenzo in there but it’s still Randall it’s goar it’s McDaniels those three together I just think your halfcourt offense is tough and so the opposite is true of Boston if you’re not putting pressure on in the half court then you’re allowing the Celtics to play in transition which means they’re probably going to score more and I just thought that starting lineup in this game they battled back every time they blew it but they blew it three different times yeah no it’s true and look they so they get it to three by half you come out the second half in the first six minutes it’s back to 16 to your point like that starting line starting unit are the ones that had a difficult time and look you know let’s be fair about it they’re also going up against a starting unit of the Boston Celtics which is the best in the league so like you know you’re matching up those two um so you know your bench might have an impact it’s going against Boston’s bench you got a better chance when some of those guys are in the game you mean the way Boston can play at times offensively it it’s tough uh look Minnesota sitting here at 8 and8 and I’m watching them every night and I’m saying I don’t think I believe in this team more than the one I believed in last year and they they rolled the dice and they made this trade and I’m not I’m not knocking Julie Rand he actually played pretty well yesterday seven for 15 23 points six boards he missed five freeos which or else he’s having has even bigger night but I don’t think necessarily it was Julius Randle but there’s just something about them that looks like they’re they’re treading water and trying to stay afloat and look you lose by two points on the road to the best team in the NBA you know there’s there’s no no shame in that but they’re eight and eight Bottom Line This is a team that went to the Conference Finals and they you think they’re ascending you know they got not only a star young player and Anthony Edward they got other some other young guys that that are key Jade McDaniels and Alexander Walker like they’ve got some other really young players that you think were growing and then you roll the dice on this move this is going to be what we need to do whether it was a chemistry issue a fit issue I don’t know I don’t think you could necessarily say it was a spacing issue because I don’t think Randle gives them spacing than cat did so whatever your reasoning was I’m not sure as I sit here Adam that you know this is something like okay it’s only 16 games give them time I’m not sure this is GNA come together for Minnesota to where I’m going to view them as a threat more and more as the year goes on I’m not writing them off completely I just don’t think I can look at this team right now and say yes that trade made a lot of sense and here’s why and they’re better for it I I’m not sure I can go there and divon chenzo just hasn’t had the impact I expected and we can you know that’s another topic I know you wanted to get into well no question and I wonder if it’s connected a little bit to that of you know how you how your rotation shakes out Randall now staggers with the bench so he’s going to play some minutes with Dante and he is such a a big figure that your entire identity is you know Randall when he’s on the court and I just don’t know if Devan chenzo is gonna benefit necessarily from that so I wonder that’s part of the things I wonder about them is what are all the Ripple effects and is that why Devan chenzo is having such a rough here I think there’s I think there’s a couple reasons okay first of all can you imagine okay let’s look at Dante divincenzo’s career prior to last season yeah okay I mean he averaged four nine 10 7 10 n that’s kind of who Dante Devan chenzo has been throughout his career then he gets to this situation in New York a lot of things play into it they needed his three-point shooting they were some injuries that led to increased minutes including a including starting and then I think here’s a big piece can you imagine how comfortable it would be to be in this role in New York you’re already an energy guy so the crowd kind of gets behind you you know you become a favorite in New York if you play the way he plays yeah and and on top of it they need you to shoot and then here’s the final piece your college teammate is playing point guard and he’s the star of the team and it’s your it’s one of your best friends if not your best friend I think he was in Jaylen brunson’s wedding if I’m not mistaken like like the empowerment and the comfortability factor to go out there and play with Reckless abandon Let it Fly especially when you got a little bit of cache behind you from that New York crowd early you know tibs clearly likes you it was like an absolute perfect storm for Dante D vichenzo to have have the year he had and then his field goal attempts the most he had ever attempted per game in in his career in his season was nine shots a game he goes up to 13 at New York and then he goes to 15 a game in the playoffs so he think about what I’m saying you’re almost double the shot attempts you’re getting per game in a postseason run it was like Nirvana for him it was perfect for him and then he’s gone and now he’s back in a situation totally different style he’s getting way fewer shots they’re spaced out more he doesn’t have that confidence Factor playing next to a guy that respects him that much got that kind of a personal relationship with who by the way happens to be your best friend and the best player on the team you know I’m not saying I don’t know that about him and Anthony AB relationship I don’t know but I guarantee it’s not like it was with Brunson so right off the bat like me playing in backourt in the NBA and my starting College Point Guard is playing Point yeah I’m gonna feel really comfortable doing whatever I want to do so I I think there’s probably something to that he is back now in regress to the norm for what his career has been that’s really all we’re saying here so he made that jump late in his career Adam I it wasn’t like he did that his year three he was in year seven when that bump took place we kind of knew who Dante dienzo was and then he had this you know anomaly of a year he’s kind of back where he’s always been now he’s he’s only shooting 35% so those numbers will uptick but he’s right back averaging 10 points a game and this is really kind of what he’s been throughout his career I’m curious to get your thoughts and how I just laid that out and maybe this is really more like do Dr D Vincenzo’s Lane much more so than what we saw that last year in New York because the opportunity that was there for him I think everything you said is fair about you know the the friends part you can’t replicate that right that that’s once in a blue moon a player gets to play with his college best friends but I think another part of this is that in today’s NBA role players really are they the their fit is so determined by how the style of play and everything else and I think Dante dento is a great player but some of the stuff he is great at doesn’t get a chance to flourish and because of Minnesota specifically and some of the lack of spacing the fact that Randall is sort of the fulkrum of it so where does he fit into that maybe as the year goes on I mean to me if you’re buying and I’ve heard some people buying the Timberwolves lately which I I’m kind of surprised by because I keep looking for it and I’m not seeing it myself they’re eight and eight but if you’re buying them I think part of what you’re buying is okay Devan chenzo hasn’t figured out but he’s going to they’re going to give him the ball more they’re going to the thing you’re talking about about getting shots they’re going to find ways to do that I just am not so sure I think he is a guy and there’s a lot of great players out there who are great role players on 80% of the rosters they’ll find themselves on but on those 20% of rosters they’re just not because their their skill set is not accentuated and I think and I worry at least that that is going to be the case for him look and I love the guy and I I there’s there’s just about any contending team in the league I’d want Dante Divan chenzo and that rotation it’s going to make them better because the way he defends the energy and then he does have like exposive three-point shooting scoring capability maybe he’s not starting anymore he started a 100 games over the last two years uh between New York and Golden State and 63 starts last year and played basically the whole season 81 games starts 63 games starts in the playoffs has this run where like it’s amazing like he’s in you know he’s in the Highlight package every single night of their playoff run guys incredible and now it you know that’s first of all it’s an emotional and psychological effect when when all of a sudden man you think this is how it’s going to be for me for the next X number of years playing in the garden this crowd behind me everything I do I’m playing with guys that I know and love for you know for a long time this is it man I I finally this is what I battled my whole life for this is like a dream come and oh sorry you’re going to Minnesota you’re not gonna start anymore it’s gonna be a totally different style of play their half court offense looks nothing like the Knicks so now go make it happen look he’s he’s he’s always been in the low 40s for the most part in his in shooting from the field and 37 for his career from the three so you know he’s never been a guy that was like in that 46 to 50 range from the field and like 44 45 from the three like those pure Shooters are in the league so he’s a guy that like he’s streaky and it’s a lot easier to get on the hot streaks when you’re playing more minutes starting playing with guys that are that aren’t going to care that you miss five in a row like Rick like Jaylen Brunson is not going to care if you miss five straight shots the ball’s coming to you because he’s seen you do it so many times well now you go to a new system you you missed two or three you think Anthony Edwards is gonna have the same feeling about Dante dienzo that Brunson did if he misses a few shots no so like all that stuff matters it all plays into it and I’m not saying don’t have confidence in him but right now he has to go find a way like to have two or three games in a row where he takes a huge leap in trust that his teammates and and Chris Finch all those guys have in him because right now he’s struggling there’s no other way to put it for all of the reasons we laid out and now it’s up to him to break through he’s probably have to do that on his own and then maybe you might see okay he’s G to take a step forward and then maybe be good the rest of the year but again I just look at his career outside of last year most of those years look the same and it looks a lot like like this year except that he hasn’t shot the ball as well so maybe his numbers will be a little bit better maybe he be averaging 11 or 12 points a game which prior to last year his career high was 10 in a season so maybe he’s up a little bit more than that but it’s much closer the way he’s playing now to what he’s been throughout his career what I think is the most interesting thing about this game though for both teams was points in the paint and in the first half because if you’re look at Minnesota like one of the things that’s interesting about this specific matchup is we wonder does Boston have the size they obviously have the speed the skill the shooting to to match up with anyone reigning Champs but do they what happens if they face a big body team well in the first half of this game legs they had eight points in the paint eight and Minnesota was dominating that matchup in the second half they made the adjustment of all right we’re where are our points in the paint going to come they’re not going to come from dribble drives because they got Rim protectors down there they’re going to come from the post they’re trying to switch you’re getting these switches on there you have Jaylen Brown Drew holiday uh Jason and they all found matchups that they liked in the post and went to the post and punished them that way could draw goar out of the paint and punish him that way and I looked at that they finished with 30 points in the paint compared to Minnesota’s 44 that’s a close enough Gap especially in that second half it’s a close enough Gap to pull out the win because you know you’re gonna win the three-point battle you’re gonna win these other things but that is it’s it’s kind of a double-edged sword so one Boston has the ability to do that they pushed that button and they executed it I thought very well in the second half but the other side of that was nikel Alexander Walker my guy and Rob Dillingham who I really love both of those guys C were getting punished physically on those plays they were two of the especially nikil Alexander Walker great defender they were abusing him and targeting him in the second half and I look at that and I go a fully healthy Minnesota team is gonna have to play those guys and that team at least can exploit their size is the thing you want to rely on they could exploit it by going at him in the post totally agree with you and that’s going to be that’s going to continue to be a challenge for them um without a doubt you know Boston both of these teams for me um particularly Boston I don’t know man there’s times I watch them Adam and I just think that they’re just they’re toying with who they’re playing with in terms of they just they they play in a way that I think makes it a little bit easier for you because when they when they play a certain way offensively and they get into the lane first before the ball comes out and then I don’t have as much of a problem with the number of Threes they take when they move it that way as opposed to come down whoever’s the primary ball handler one ball screen three when they do that I think that they they play into your hands you bring up some stuff about Minnesota defensely too and some of those guys and dillingham’s a good example and he hasn’t been playing very much till lately he got 16 minutes last night which I think might be a season High actually in minutes and look he can score and I saw him in uh Vegas and I really liked him even though they yeah even though I he didn’t shoot well in Vegas I was like he’s getting to a spot he’s getting a shot off and I thought when they made that move and the Spurs had the pick and then Minesota ends up with him and I thought my goodness what a perfect situation for him because he’s I think he could score in the NBA now is what I said that at that night draft night and I think he can he hasn’t got a lot of opportunity to do it he got the opportunity last night he gets up 10 shots at 16 minutes he goes six for 10 he shot horribly in the preseason Took a ton of sh very first preseason game he was nine for 20 took 20 shots his first preseason game so he’s not shy know he shot horribly or he would have got more minutes and you know I like him but man I think he’s gonna get absolutely attacked defensively not just like now but maybe like his whole career because he’s so slightly built I don’t think he’s 63 which is what He’s listed at I I stood right next to him after a game in Vegas I was kind I don’t think these guy 6’3 um and he’s probably 170 pounds yeah that that the kind of guy that like you and you’re not known for being like a tenacious Payton Pritchard type on the ball Defender you’re going to get attacked and I think he’s gonna have to get you back on the other end so if you play him you better let him go on the other end because that’s what he that’s what he’s out there to do and this is why I’m buying first of all I love his game he’s just his he has incredible body control he has the ball on a string and functional you know he’s not doing crazy stuff he just functionally has a handle that gets him where he wants you mentioned it he gets to his spots that’s exactly it he gets there I think he’s a great passer and he’s a great scorer but the hard part is when you’re a rookie you don’t want to just come in and be like okay I’m running the show that’s a really hard thing to ask a rookie to do but I think to your point because of his deficiencies on defense he has to get over that hump and I like that they’re playing him I think he’s played in each of the last five games he played 15 minutes last night I’m just so curious because in part I’m not buying Minnesota’s offense around Randall that I keep waiting for like you have to look almost at extremes and dillingham’s an extreme and so I look at him and I’m I say I’m glad they’re playing him Mike Conley’s out so he gets even extra run but I want to see what he has and if he can get over that hump because defensively we already know the deficiencies and real quick so last night 131 offensive rating with him on the court 124 defensive rating 124 defensive rating is horrible but you score 131 you you you win your battle do you have a fa simile for him because I think Kyrie I was watching Payton Pritchard last night you’re right defensively it’s not there but offensively there’s a little he’s got some shake he’s got a three-point shot what do you what’s what’s your comp for him now that you’ve seen him at this level a little bit I tell you what man I I I I I knew we were GNA kind of go down this road I was thinking so hard I don’t know I can find somebody currently in the league pyton Pritchard kind of came to mind because again he’s a smaller guy yeah but he’s he’s a lot stronger and his his his base and his ability to to cut you off of penetration and like I said I to you earlier in the year I did a I did a Celtic Suns game uh last last year and I was blown away by like how much quicker he looked than everybody else on the floor and it’s like it’s like a strong quick too um offensively maybe there’s some comparisons there in how they’re going to play I actually think Ro I actually think Dillingham can probably make more passes off the dribble as like a lead guard to create offense even a higher number of type of passes than than pton Pritchard can make Dillingham is also a playmaker now in this team this role I don’t know how much he’s going to get of that because Edward’s got the ball all the time randle’s got the ball all the time I I don’t know that he’s gonna get a lot opportunity to make plays your best bet when he’s on the floor let the guy go if you’re gonna play him then you got like a stat line like last night is what you’re looking for if he’s gonna play 15 minutes he should get 10 shots that’s what he’s on the floor to do because he’s a very talented offensive player I don’t know that I have a comp for him because there’s not a lot of guys in the league that are small taller and that thin yeah you know and that could score like that there there’s not a ton of guys most of the guys that I would describe physically that way are more like backup point guards that run the offense that’s not what he is he’s a scorer and you got to let this guy go the more open floor uh play you can get for him the better he’s gonna be we’ll see if this is like the beginning of consistent minutes for him or it’s just hey we’re we’re gonna we’re gonna we’re going to do it right now connley didn’t play we’re going to do it right now now and who knows maybe he goes back to they mind hey let’s give this guy some extended run you know he’s a first round pick let let’s let’s let’s go see if he can play and you’re starting to see a little bit of that now um the Celtics just they’re the best at the league I believe at doing what they do I mean I have to really think if there’s any other team that just kind of knows this is how we win games and we execute it every night and they’re as I said going into halftime okay we need to get into the paint and doing it the smart way not the dumb way I mean the dumb way would be all right let’s try to dribble Drive into the paint let goar block our shot over and over again they didn’t do it that way they were smart about how they did it and adjusted they’re just so good at being who they are and now legs tonight against the Clippers they have porzingis back I thought and I mean there’s been most some momentum towards this so I but I thought months ago when we had the poras news you always go a little longer on some of these big injuries so I thought man what if he’s not back till January where’s Boston going to be well turns out they’re going to be 14 and three and he’s going to come back late November I mean what an ad and what do you expect now from him coming back they’re already the second best team in the NBA record-wise and now they add porzingis glad they’re getting them back now because they got this game with Cleveland coming up uh Sunday next Sunday and little too so so so you know you get a better idea full strength what does it look like they just they played a these two teams played a great game in Boston this week and now they go to Cleveland next Sunday um in in a big game and to get him back now look he might be he will be on a minutes restriction and all that stuff but it gives you a better idea how the size for Cleveland matches up against them when they’ve got that additional size infused because you remember you know year ago they didn’t really Boston didn’t get that size Jared Allen was out they didn’t have to face him beid they didn’t face Giannis they didn’t face a lot of the bigger more impactful players in Eastern Conference um that now you’re going to get a Cleveland with those guys playing and playing really high level so now to get porzingis back to go up against that front line that’s an interesting one for me they also have the Clippers um tonight uh and they’re playing great very physical good defensive team so I’m anxious to see now Pingas you’re right I expected to see him probably closer to Christmas so and I’m just I’m glad because I have Boston on Christmas and I’m I’m glad now that hopefully they’re full strength he comes back and stays back it’s been a challenge for him throughout his career but hopefully they get him back I want to see this team at full strength to really understand now how they look the year after winning the championship at full strength I think they’re going to look incredible I didn’t even think about that matchup I mean the matchup against the Clippers is is a good one uh you know that’ll be a great game tonight I’m excited for that one we’ll definitely be talking about it tomorrow but I didn’t even think about that Cleveland matchup so the Celtics really impressive the way that they have gone 14 and three in his absence and now they get him back and they just look I mean there has been no drop off last year to this year they if anything they execute at a higher level in my opinion really really impressive stuff all right let’s take a break on the other side we’re going to talk about a wild finish to the heat in the Mavs game went to overtime Mavs keep losing these close ones but is there something to the heat right now and later know if you saw it coming you would you hop on the app and you go he’s going to miss this um all right let’s go back uh the heat in the Mavs I think the Mavs have to be Lo leading the league right now in two point losses so or five point losses or less it happened again last night and this was another tough one man because they had the lead with like two minutes to go I think they were up five they had a lead and it just slipped away in part because Kyrie Irving and Spencer deny finished the game two of 13 Spencer didn’t what he did not make a shot Kyrie just made two and Kyrie was on fire until he wasn’t and then the well dried up for him that’s what I what stood out to me is when he’s not making shots they weren’t getting great process but he’s a great shot maker and he didn’t make shots down the stretch and as a result the Mavs fall I’m gonna simplify it it comes down to one possession and I don’t I there’s no way anybody is going to be able to justify to me the way that Dallas defended the sideline out of bounds that Miami had Miami’s down by two Five Points 3 seconds left in the game they’ve got the ball in the front Court taking it side out like teams do after a timeout in that situation Miami is coming out to run their play they’ve got Jimmy Butler Tyler hero and somebody else all the way in the back court that they’re they’re at least they start out to play they’re 65 feet from the basket Dallas is chest to chest in the back court against those players and now you’ve got a screener bam you got a screener in the front court and these guys are going to start running full speed and he’s going to set a back screen and you’re that far away from the rim and what invariably is going to happen which is exactly what happened back screen is set Derek Lively and P PJ Washington who’s guarding Jimmy Butler Derek Lively’s guarding the screener and Jimmy Butler is running full speed at the back screen the screen takes place Derek Lively jumps with Jimmy Butler for a second PJ Washington is like in Hot Pursuit to get back to him but then thinks oh okay Lively switched so now he starts to go back to the screener but Derek Lively apparently was only gonna stay with Jimmy Butler for like a couple of steps and then he Sprints back to his man just for that Split Second both guys run to the screener Jimmy Butler ends up with basically an uncontested layup to tie the game yeah how how somebody explained to me why are these teams and that’s not the first time I’ve seen it this year why are you defending face guarding guys 65 feet from the rim on a sideline out of bounds play up by two you know how hard it is to deny NBA players the ball you’re not denying anybody the basketball in the NBA it just doesn’t unless you sell out and put two guys on one player that you desperately do not want to touch the ball let Luca or Steph Curry or some like that LeBron right and and so yeah okay you can deny the guy but guess what that means somebody else going to be wide open in the NBA and that ball is going to go to that person and they’re gonna be able to make a shot I don’t understand what they were trying to accomplish Dallas guarding them in that way just play normal defense let them run their set most likely they’re going to end up with a very difficult three-point shot off the dribble with a hand up or a drive contested trying to float it over somebody at the buzzer and and Dallas most likely wins the game instead they gift wrap an uncontested layup up to five seconds to go doesn’t make any sense to me and then then they don’t get a shot off and then now you go overtime and Miami wins the game so I’m I’m simplifying the whole thing to that play they they steal a win without Luca if they can make that play in that moment and I do not understand the mentality defensively lining up like that against a team running a sideline out of bounds of five seconds to go I just don’t get it and it burned them they gave up a layup and actually should have been an and one because Lively then recovered on Butler’s layup and kind of bumped him in the back of the head as he was laying it in they just didn’t call it or that’s an and one in regulation that he would have won that game especially when you talk about this specific matchup because you kind of raise what I thought was the biggest point for me which is Miami scored the ball really well last night I mean they put up 123 points but everything is a chore for them they have to execute it’s hard it’s not easy on the other side you had the Mavericks who should be better defensive team but you have the Mavericks without Luca and they’re almost in this like just hold on to the Rope right now the way they’ve been playing this last little bit you’re going to Kyrie a lot and even Spencer DWI I saw some people in the chat why was he out there I feel like I know why he was out there the Mavericks did not trust their process down the stretch to win the game so they needed shot making they’re like oh Spencer Den is gonna be a shot maker Kyrie’s gonna be a shot maker and the well just went a little bit dry there but defensively to your point if that’s how you’re going to feel you know that Miami is not a team that’s going to just create shots out of thin air they’re going to have to execute them and when you do them a favor uh like that then you give them an opportunity but that was my big takeaway from this game was I almost feel like Dallas just kind of knows luuka won’t be gone for too long you don’t we don’t think so we just have to like we get a lead we just have to make some shots down the stretch and it just didn’t work for him last night there wasn’t great ball movement there was and look I was there Friday night out in Denver you know you were there we saw that game jokic’s first one back um if he missed a few awaiting the birth of his child and he comes back of course he was incredible in that game you and I really haven’t even had a chance to talk about that game I know but but but it it was interesting because Dallas Dallas I mean that’s about as as much as you can eviscerate a team in the paint in the first half of that game Dallas did it and Michael Mone said before the game I’m G get I’m gonna tie it into this game in a second Michael Malone said you know that was his biggest fear coming in that Dallas was averaging 60 points a paint a game in the paint the last three games that Denver one of the worst in the league at defending the paint and it was a perfect story Dallas had 44 points in the paint in the first half of that game come out first two possessions third quarter remember Dunk Dunk for Dallas yeah oh yeah right away so so and I’m going my goodness man this is the adjustment like you come out two lob dunks right off the bat so now it’s 48 points in the paint and now you’re down 24 of course Denver comes all the way back take the lead and then they just sort of ran out of steam at the End Dallas ends up making some more shots at the at the end of the game to win it so my point being this Dallas they won that game played well enough to win that game I thought thoroughly outplayed Denver for the majority of that game and they end up getting the win that they deserved I thought on that night I thought that in this game I don’t think either team necessarily was super smart or played like incredibly well but Dallas put themselves in position again without Luca against you know a tough team to play he’s not a juggernaut but they’re they’re you know they’re always hard to play against on the road again you’re in position to win and I thought this was a self-inflicted wound how you don’t walk out of there with that on a night when some of your key guys did not shoot the ball well you need more from Den witty um you you you know just need one for 12 you need a better night out of him ky’s nine for 21 not certainly not his best he he was great the last five minutes yeah it’s just yeah exactly so I look at that right now with Dallas they’re just obviously waiting to get Luke it’s a totally different style of play when he plays it’s really interesting the way how different it looks when he doesn’t play for them it’s a totally different style they overall have been a disappointment relative to expectations I think everybody would agree with that to this now here we are we’re a month into the season a little over a month and they’re a long way from having their act together but this would have been nice to steal a couple wins against good tough teams on the road instead they get this split with uh Denver and Miami nine and eight to your point they’re still figuring it out but so many of these games are two-point games but when you talk about you know a couple of these come without Luca I just don’t know how much you could read into their late game clutch performance right now if it’s the same story in the back half of the Season we’ll worry about it because it’s something they’ve been good at but they’re right now they’re struggling I will say this I I mean it’s funny because I’m criticizing Kyrie I love watching Kyrie man I love ABS he’s one of my favorite players to watch did you know he has a career high and three-point percentage this year late 48% from three yeah and he is shooting a career best 61% effective field goal percentage and that’s why the end of the game was so jarring like you can’t even fault the Mavs if I were betting in the last three minutes I’d be like well Kyrie just needs to make one or two and it’s going to come home and and he went really cold but watching him shoot and score this year I just feel like he is at an all-time high in his shot making ability which is saying something because he’s one of the best shot makers we’ve ever seen completely agree and I said it to Jason kid uh on Friday night when we interviewed him before the game I said to me this is one of the best stretches of Kyrie Irving’s career and that’s that’s saying a lot I mean when you look at what this guy’s done throughout his career and how easily he scores and how good he has been first of all he’s in a great Spot Great Lane for him to be in in Dallas you with Luca kind of being the center of the universe with that franchise and Kyrie can just go play that that’s that’s where he thrives he’s done it in other situations the same way here’s the thing you said 48% from the three you know going into the Denver game he was shooting 54% from the three he’s four for his last 18 over the last two games that have brought him back to 48% but he was he was mid-50s from the field mid-50s from the three two games ago um so he he’s been absolutely incredible in being able to be that efficient playing alongside Luca who’s talented as he is and everybody knows how I feel about the guy as far as a talent isn’t the easiest to play with when you play like Kyrie and you’re trying to you know get into your Rhythm and and and he he just you know he dribbles the ball so much and he’s he hunts his own shots first and then it comes to you later that’s a that could be disruptive to a natural scorer who who utilizes his handle to create a lot of his offense the way Kyrie does but he’s doing it at a higher rate than he’s ever done it and it speaks volumes for like how good this guy has been this year and and he’s been there every night too by the way he’s out there every night playing um so look Dallas there there’s a lot more chapters to Rewritten in their season book we we you know they’re going to be several different iterations of this team let’s see where they’re at much later in the year but right now yeah they’ve got to they’ve got to get some some things uh improved upon before we start to take them a little bit more seriously right now in the west when you look at some of the starts these other teams have had let’s move on to our last team that we’re talking about tonight which is the uh Clippers who have won five in a row four of those games that came at home but they have wins over the Warriors the magic and the Kings those are good wins they just beat the doors off of the 76ers Harden’s old team a Revenge game their fifth in defensive rating 20th in offensive rating and here’s the thing legs I always when I’m looking at teams like this I always go into the data to see what pops out nothing pops out about them you go to the four factors you go to all the different things the only category is their first and opponent offensive rebound percentage they don’t give up Second Chance points they they clear the glass but everything else is middle of the road you know 10th 10th to 20th somewhere in there they’re good at a lot of things and I’m trying to figure out what works and then I find this quote that comes courtesy of La Murray of the athletic he says uh this is a from tyoo going into camp and knowing that we weren’t going to have kawhai for a strong amount at the beginning of the Season we just knew what our team was going to be after the first five or six games we understood what our rotation was going to be how we wanted to play what guys fit well and who and so it’s been good for us like you know the guy’s being in and out we just have a rotation now that we know that is an incredible quote to me because that’s so much of basketball sometimes you have these big pieces how do they fit together but when you lose that stuff it’s like all right everybody knows the r the rotation the same every night you just have to do these everybody has a job that they know what it is there’s Clarity I have a feeling that’s honestly why they’re off to this such a hot start I think a big part of it and I saw this right from the beginning of the year when I when I called their first game of the season against Phoenix they have changed their identity they’ve changed their non-negotiables about winning to be more of a defensive oriented team Y and and that to me and I’m not talking about when they had Kawai and Paul George and like you know you’re hoping those guys play and they’re very good Defenders that’s not what I’m talking about I’m talking about your identity as a team with with quickness across the board with guys that are on the floor because they made their bones in this league as Defenders like that that end of the floor matters more to guys like Chris Dunn and Nicholas Batum and Amir coffee that’s the identity now and without kawhai Paul George gone they put the ball back in Harden’s hands he’s pretty much controlling the offense but he doesn’t have to get 35 like he played in Houston because that wouldn’t be able to be possible at this stage of his career he’d have too many inefficient nights instead he gets to pick his spots more because they’re gonna they’re gonna hold teams down and look at this you know this winning streak you’re talking about look at the you know the point totals they’ve given up in this stretch you 105 which is a great night in the NBA now 99 93 88 99 four straight games Nobody Breaks a 100 and it’s because that’s how they’re going to win and then they’re gonna let Hardin will be good enough and he’s been very good especially as a as a playmaker he’s been he’s been very very good managing it they have a star player kind of running the setting the table we’ll make enough shots we’ll do enough and then we’re going to defend you and pressure you and force you out on the floor we’re going to switch a bunch of stuff we’re faster than you in transition defense and we’re going to be a top five ranked defensive team and let’s see how that plays out for us without you know know Kawhi Leonard and Paul George out there to help provide the Firepower guess what it looks pretty good they also have I think the most underrated player in the NBA in zubach zubach is the most underrated player in the league he he is man you you have top tier guys there’s only a few of those at the center spot yeah then you’ve got some like you know highly serviceable guys zubas doesn’t get mentioned in that group and he belongs there because all the guy does is shoot like 60 to 70% for the field every night he’s averaging 13 boards during the winning streak he’s more than capable of having 20 point nights if that’s what’s required of him he plays hard he is a beast on the offensive glass to get them extra shots he’s been playing great they’ve got a formula that’s working for them right now and and I’m like watching them because of how hard they’re playing and some of these guys that got criticized for their offense in their careers are are now able to fit into this rotation because they’re buying into defensive-minded players Chris Dunn’s a great example of that Chris Dunn and he’s a great defensive player as well I mean that’s his value but where does he fit offensively he’s getting eight points a game shooting the ball you know decently well 38% from three 63% basically from two so he’s a guy and then Norman Powell’s a guy he’s actually leading the team and scoring 23 points a game and he’s shooting another some of these early season numbers are ridiculous we just mentioned Kyrie well he’s at 49% from three this year on seven attempts a game and we’re far enough into the season now legs 15 games for him to go I mean that he’s not going to shoot that all year but that’s a even even if he drops down over the next 15 games he’s going to fall to Elite territory so to me Clarity in basketball of who you are and what your job is is so important and sometimes losing guys whether to injury trade or whatever it helps Clarity and that’s a team that just seems to have a lot of it right now and let’s let’s quick final point on Norman pal you know you don’t usually get guys that have been really good players in this league and and he has been and really good scorers in this league typically you don’t find guys you know get to a career high as a scorer in their 11th season that just doesn’t happen it’s very difficult to do that you know Norman Powell is 31 years old usually by then it’s like you’ve had your Peak year offensively somewhere else guy’s been out of his mind for them because I was talking about how good they are defensively well somebody’s got a score because Harden’s not getting 35 at night like he was in Houston you know he’s in the you know around that 20 point range most nights where is it going to come from Norman Powell has completely found another gear for them and then there’s one more guy I want to mention we didn’t mention yet I don’t think you did I know I didn’t Derrick Jones Jr’s got to get some some some credit here because another guy he’s a guy that made a name for himself in this league defensively he’s a high flyer he’s a lob threat um streaky three-point shooter at best he had I thought really impactful season for the Mavericks a year ago on a team that went to the finals he was a critical player on that team now he goes to the Clippers and like his defense stands out with his length and reach and again continues to be a lob threat as a starter for them has been excellent and plugging him into this new identity to go find a Defender like that when this is what you’re trying to become now while you wait for kawi and you might never get him who knows I think teron L put it in his rearview mirror man I’m not even thinking about it let’s just go with this group and this is how I want to play and we got to find guys to plug in that want to play this way and Dereck Jones Jor is a perfect fit what’s funny about him is two years two seasons ago before he goes to Dallas there’s real questions about whether he’s a winning player you know I talked to enough people around the league and I would ask about him because I’ve always been intrigued by the style just what do you think I don’t know if that guy’s like a winning type of guy you watch what he did in Dallas and now what he’s doing on the Clippers it’s just winning that’s all he’s doing he’s not doing anything other than the winning stuff and so real real you know rise for him what’s funny is he’s getting paid because of it I always love seeing the players that think they have to do something to get paid and then they fall into their natural role and then get rewarded for it it’s always a nice story it’s like you know what that’s who you are and you’re going to stay in the league now because of it but this last quote from moamba I thought was interesting he says we like knowing what we’re going into we’ll make it work on how we go it’s good when you know what’s going on you know how much you’re going to play night toight I think it builds camaraderie within you know what you’re doing when you’re on the floor this is kind of what I’m getting at with tyo and with this team is when you know because a lot of teams will Tinker with lineups we’re try different guys we’re trying stuff especially early and in addition to you know you don’t find a rhythm mentally I think it’s tough when you’re like am I playing tonight am I not playing if I miss a shot am I coming out just being able to say this is who we are and we’re going to win or lose based on this it actually I think elevates all your role players 20% because they just know how the game’s going to unfold from a rotation standpoint it’s a very fair point I lived you know in that world and you’re right man and the you know the best success I had were coaches that kind of approached it like that Clarity transparency and honesty it’s all you want as a player you can deal with whatever’s thrown at you if you have honesty and transparency from your head coach whatever and you might totally disagree if you’re not getting enough playing time and you think you’re better than the guy that’s playing ahead of you and you and you you would do more than that guy’s getting with that opportunity you might even think that way but you can respect and appreciate where the coach is coming from if it’s laid out for you and you’ll know then where’s the opportunity gonna come it’s very clear in your mind and that’s all you really want as a player and I I’ve always thought that way about tyo like he’s just got a really cool easy demeanor and it just seems like he just would be a very easy guy to play for and Thrive under because I just don’t think he’s checking under the hood too much to find your faults as a player you’re there and you’re on the court and you’re in that in that on that roster because you do certain things well and that’s what he’s going to focus on I talk about this all the time they’re the best they’re the best coaches in the league the guys that value you for what you do well and consider it their job to protect you from your weaknesses that’s that’s really the ultimate role of a head coach 100% all right so tonight you got Clippers and Boston porzingis is back a real test to that defense that we’re talking about but I actually really into this game man I think it’s a really fascinating one because I’m not really buying the Clippers as this like Contender tier team but I am buying them right now like they’re they’re really good right now and you get porzingis back that could throw off your Rhythm I I I think this is going to be a fun game is there anything you’re looking for it just in that match up it’s the only game we’ll talk about is a preview but it’s a big one that’s I mean that’s I’m looking at some of these games I see a lot of teams that are like kind of like underachieve mode Nicks nuggets is another good one I mean that’s that’s you know that’s a very good game yic is on a level right now that is just he’s must see TV you have to watch him right now the stuff he’s doing did you see his one-handed paw all the way full court there was only3 seconds left legs they throw the ball into him and you can’t grab it and shoot so he po it he came within within a foot of the basket 78 foot slap of the basketball and he was off by one foot you know the game on Friday night Adam is the first time I’ve called the game that joic has played in because majority the majority of my work since he came into the League’s been in the studio so I’ve broken him down a ton in studio I don’t I may have done as many different breakdowns on him as any player in the league during the last over the last five years so fascinating so that’s the first time to sit there and sitting from that Vantage Point midcourt best seat in the house calling the game he had shots that he made made in that game particularly in the second half because I was sitting on the end of the table and I had a perfect unobstructed view to their basket he had he had a couple spin moves where he’s coming out of the spin and it’s just it’s incomprehensible that he’s picked up on the Target or the angle of the glass that he’s going to use and he shoots the ball and it if you didn’t know better you’d think it was like this random act that it’s like so intentional it doesn’t really make a lot of sense that he has that level of instincts spatial awareness and touch yeah and a guy that big it just doesn’t make any sense whatsoever man so that was a thrill for me to sit there by the way got you know ended up being a hell of a game and Russell Westbrook Russell Westbrook went crazy from the three which doesn’t really happen very often great this was incredible um you a great you know look at the guys got to step up Naji Marshall and PJ Washington were Sensational in that game that was a fun entertaining game ended up being that way so you know any yic is incredible the Knicks and Nuggets look nine and seven n and six similar records so I think that’s a very important game um and then I think you got a lot of teams I think that have underachieved I mean look at go down list Sacramento underachiever uh I would say Memphis 10 and seven without j a little bit of an underachievement there I think Dallas clearly Indiana my goodness seven and 10 and they play play the Pelicans you talk about two two achieving teams they’re going head-to-head tonight Pistons my most improved team in the league pick get the Raptors at home that should be a win get to their eighth win of the year which took them I think three months four months last year to get to that total so we got some interesting games tonight but clearly the Marquee game is Celtics Clippers yeah excited for that one all right we have one super chat I believe producer James what do we got here uh psycho blue he says bball cthulu would say the Sixers need an adult not in the words of DBZ a bridge PG-13 is the adult and he’s podcasting about locker room arguments after they get leaked unintentionally I will say that was the funniest part of the entire Fiasco last week with the 76ers was podcast P hopping on the mic and breaking it down we’re in a whole new world legs we’re in a whole new world where your team could be rattled and everything Fallen apart behind the scenes 24 hours later it’s a conversation it’s a podcast up their season look and it’s been a train wreck obviously three and 13 I feel sorry for Nick nurse and it’s it’s not getting any better anytime soon and be’s out again Paul George out again um but here’s the thing like I thought here’s what I found most interesting about that whole situation when it when it got out what Maxi apparently said to to emid in that meeting about show up on time and sets the tone for everybody his his his reaction wasn’t like you know what man I got I gotta look in the mirror I got to take accountability for that and we’ll it was it was who leak this like if that’s your reaction like wait a second that’s what you took out of this story he also said it doesn’t happen that much you know which I thought was a funny one as well like I’m not late all the time I mean I listen I don’t know I don’t know I’m not there so I don’t know T didn’t go into detail but I played with guys you know you’re sitting on that Charter waiting engines running on the plane waiting on that guy to show up you know me I’ve been on teams like that man and it does it does give off an err of I’m definitely more important than everybody else here and and so I’m not saying that’s Ben and be but listen I don’t know at this point at some point you’re so buried that even psychologically it’s hard to to fight back they’re not quite there yet because they have so much talent that hasn’t played together but man three and 13 is a deep hole to dig out of well hit that
